Abstract Imaging the entire cardiomyocyte network in entire small animal hearts at single cell resolution is a formidable challenge. Optical microscopy provides sufficient contrast and resolution in 2d, however fails to deliver non-destructive 3d reconstructions with isotropic resolution. It requires several invasive preparation steps, which introduce structural artefacts, namely dehydration, physical slicing and staining, or for the case of light sheet microscopy also clearing of the tissue. Our goal is to provide 3d reconstructions of the cardiomyocyte network in entire hydrated murine hearts, and to develop a methodology for quantitative analysis of heart pathologies based on X-ray phase contrast computed tomography (XPCT). We have used XPCT at two beamlines of the extremely brilliant source (EBS) at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) to scan wild-type murine hearts at high resolution, as well as a series of murine hearts of different pathological models, at reduced resolution and higher throughput. All hearts were obtained from the small animal facility of the university medical center in Göttingen. The hearts were fixed in formalin, stored and measured non-destructively in phosphate buffer solution. The high resolution dataset allows to discern individual cardiomyocytes in the tissue. All datasets have been analyzed using semi-automated image segmentation of the ventricles, rotation into a common coordinate system, classification into different anatomical compartments, and finally the structure tensor approach. A 3d streamline representation of the cardiomyocyte orientation vector field is provided. The different cardiovascular disease models are analysed based on metrics derived from the 3d structure tensor. An entire hydrated murine heart has been covered at an isotropic voxel size of 1.6 $$\upmu$$ μ m (distributed over several volumes). A binned and fused dataset of this heart is available at 3.2 $$\upmu$$ μ m, and has been analyzed by the structure tensor approach to yield the ventricular cardiomyocyte network or mesh, i.e. the aggregation of the cardiomyocyte chains in particular in the ventricular wall. Semi-automatic determination of structural metrics is already achieved and the corresponding tools and resulting data are made publically available. XPCT using extremely brilliant undulator radiation is close to achieve single cell reconstruction in an entire small animal organ.

From the second half of the 1970s, some organizations of unofficial and independent artists and writers were created in the Soviet Union, which were officially recognized by Soviet authorities: in 1976 in the Moscow City Committee of Graphic Artists a section of painting was set up that united non-formal artists who exhibited their works in the halls in Malaia Gruzinskaia street; in 1981 in Leningrad the literary club “Klub-81” was created, a unique organization of unsanctioned writers under the direct control of the KGB; in 1985 an alternative literary association, the “Klub Poeziia”, was also founded in Moscow. These institutions represented a forum for discussions and interaction between the members of the unofficial culture, but at the same time they were under the jurisdiction of Soviet law and combined functions and features like any other official Soviet institution. The aim of this paper is to investigate the role and structures of these ambiguous and alternative organizations, on the border between official and non-official culture.

Access to safe drinking water is a major challenge for vulnerable populations, especially in regions with limited infrastructure. The use of chemical coagulants in water treatment presents environmental and health risks due to their non-biodegradable byproducts, which contaminate ecosystems. Natural coagulants offer a safer alternative, as they decompose naturally and reduce pollution. However, their production often requires complex methods, such as microfiltration and lyophilization, which are unsuitable for resource-limited areas. This study introduces a simplified method for producing a natural coagulant from the seeds of Moringa oleifera, eliminating the need for complex techniques or saline solutions. The process involves peeling, grinding the seeds, stirring with water, and filtering through paper filters, producing the coagulant in under 30 min. Coagulation tests showed complete turbidity removal with 5 mL of coagulant per liter of water at 100 NTU. Introdução: A vacina de Hepatite B é fornecida pelo Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) no calendário de vacinação infantil e é uma medida essencial para proteger contra a doença, potencialmente fatal, ela é indicada para esquema de vacinação em primeira dose o mais precocemente possível, preferencialmente nas primeiras 12 horas após o nascimento, ainda na maternidade, podendo ser administrada até 30 dias após o nascimento. Embora tenha demonstrado ser altamente segura e eficaz, a implementação de programas de vacinação enfrenta desafios, a falta de acesso a serviços de saúde e conscientização da importância da vacinação podem dificultar a cobertura vacinal. Objetivo: Descrever a cobertura vacinal de Hepatite B em crianças com até 30 dais de vida entre os anos de 2017 e 2022 nas diferentes regiões do país. Método: Estudo ecológico realizado a partir dos dados secundários do Sistema de Informação do Programa Nacional de Imunizações (SI-PNI) situados no DATASUS (Departamento de Informática do Sistema Único de Saúde). Foram coletadas informações da taxa de cobertura vacinal por região do país dos anos de 2017 a 2022. A análise estatística descritiva foi realizada no Microsoft Excel através do cálculo da diferença de frequência percentual por região de notificação. Resultados: Observou-se que nenhuma das regiões do país atendeu a meta de cobertura vacinal de 95% para a dose de hepatite B infantil antes dos primeiros 30 dias de vida. No entanto, a região Centro-Oeste apresentou a maior taxa de cobertura vacinal (85,3%) e a região Sul a menor cobertura (75,6%). O ano de 2020 apresentou menor taxa de cobertura, com apenas 70% dos nascidos vivos vacinados. A queda da cobertura vacinal não é um fenômeno exclusivo do Brasil. Desde 2013, o Brasil não atinge a meta de primeira dose de Hepatite B. Entre as causas do baixo índice de adesão vacinal, estão a falta de campanhas que conscientizem sobre a importância da vacina, movimentos ideológicos anti-vacinais, escassez de postos vacinais e horários de funcionamento limitados das unidades de saúde. Conclusão: Através dos dados, observou-se uma manutenção das baixas taxas de cobertura vacinal ao longo dos anos, revelando uma carência na imunização das novas gerações. Isso reflete de forma negativa na saúde pública, com possibilidade de aumento no número de casos/ano de Hepatite B, colocando em risco o plano de erradicação das doenças infecciosas.

Introdução: A hepatite B pode ser transmitida de mãe para filho, durante a gestação, ou no momento do parto. Essa forma de transmissão pode implicar em evolução desfavorável ao bebê, aumentando o risco do desenvolvimento de hepatite B crônica¹. A principal forma de prevenção é a vacinação. Desenvolvida com tecnologia de DNA recombinante, é extremamente segura e eficaz. No Brasil, a vacinação neonatal é crucial em áreas com acesso limitado ao pré-natal, especialmente para mães HBsAg +. Nestes casos, além da vacinação, é preconizada a administração da imunoglobulina específica (HBIG), nas primeiras 12 horas de vida². Objetivo: Este trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a cobertura vacinal para Hepatite B, em neonatos nascidos no município de Mauá, SP. Método: Estudo transversal da cobertura vacinal contra hepatite B em crianças de até 30 dias no município de Mauá entre 2018 e 2022, utilizando como plataforma pesquisa o DATASUS³, cuja fonte é o Sistema de Informação do Programa Nacional de Imunizações. Resultados: Em 2018, a cobertura vacinal contra a hepatite B em neonatos nascidos em Mauá, registrou um índice satisfatório de 92,69%, refletindo uma adesão positiva à vacinação. No entanto, em 2019, houve uma drástica queda, com decréscimo da cobertura para 41,51%, indicando desafios significativos no programa de vacinação. A tendência negativa persistiu em 2020, com uma queda ainda maior na cobertura vacinal, atingindo 24,72%. Tal declínio substancial persistiu no ano de 2021 (21,02%). No ano de 2022, a cobertura vacinal teve um pequeno acréscimo (47,72%), cobertura essa, ainda longe da meta estabelecida pelo Ministério da Saúde. Conclusão: Dados apresentados pelo Ministério da Saúde (MS), em concordância com os resultados do presente estudo, demonstram a queda acentuada na cobertura vacinal de doenças imunopreveníveis, iniciada em 2018 4, sendo os maiores declínios observados em regiões com maiores índices de pobreza. A pandemia da COVID-19, iniciada em 2020, também parece ter influenciado a diminuição da adesão aos calendários vacinais. A disseminação de informações incorretas, ocorrida durante este período, gerou inseguranças nos pais e, também pode ter colaborado para este cenário apresentado. Diante disso, o MS tem intensificado medidas que estimulem e promovam aumento na adesão ao calendário vacinal.

Introdução: A Tuberculose (TB) é uma doença infecciosa de grande prevalência no Brasil e no mundo. Causada pelo Mycobacterium tuberculosis, é considerada a segunda maior causa de mortes por doenças infecciosas. Sua transmissão e desenvolvimento está intimamente relacionada a determinantes sociais, como pobreza, desnutrição, desemprego e más condições de moradia. Objetivo: Este trabalho tem como objetivo, estabelecer um perfil epidemiológico das pessoas infectadas pela TB no município de Mauá e, a partir desta análise, inferir políticas públicas eficazes que auxiliem na redução da incidência de novos casos na região. Método: Estudo epidemiológico transversal de casos confirmados de tuberculose no município de Mauá, realizado por meio de dados fornecidos pela Vigilância Epidemiológica, entre os anos de 2018 a junho de 2023. Dados relacionados ao sexo do paciente, idade e escolaridade, foram utilizados. Resultados: Entre os anos de 2018 e 2023 foram notificados 878 casos de TB no município de Mauá, SP. As maiores incidências foram observadas em 2018 (31/100 mil habitantes), 2019 e 2022 (27/100 mil habitantes), respectivamente. A análise da escolaridade dos pacientes demonstrou que 1.70% se declararam analfabetos, 27% possuem entre 1 e 7 anos de estudos e 47% possuem mais de 8 anos de estudos (24,3% não apresentaram esses dados). Em relação ao sexo, 33.71% dos pacientes são do sexo feminino e 66.28% do sexo masculino. Pacientes entre 18 e 39 anos representam 53% dos casos do período. A menor prevalência foi observada em menores de 17 anos (3%). Conclusão: Os achados sugerem que no municipio estudado a TB tem maior prevalência em indivíduos do sexo masculino, entre 18 e 39 anos de idade, com mais de 8 anos de estudo. Tais achados se assemelham aos publicados por LOCA et al, 2021. Esses resultados demonstram que a prevenção desta doença deve ser realizada por políticas e programas de saúde direcionados a população mais afetada que visem o tratamento e o acompanhamento adequado dos pacientes. A concentração da tuberculose em grupos demográficos e socioeconômicos específicos destaca a necessidade de abordagens amplas e integradas, considerando fatores como acesso à saúde, condições de moradia, emprego e educação, e utilizando tanto os aspectos biomédicos quanto sociais. A atenção voltada a esses aspectos poderá reduzir significativamente a transmissão e prevalência de TB no município de Mauá.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the physicochemical properties of coffee husk, elephant grass, and sugarcane alone or combined with each other or with commercial compounds, as well as their use as substrate for the production of clonal Coffea canephora seedlings. The experiment was carried out in two stages: one for the physicochemical characterization of the substrates, and the other for evaluations of the growth of coffee seedlings in these substrates. In the first stage, the treatments consisted of coffee husk (CH), elephant grass (EG), sugarcane (SC), commercial substrate (CS), vermiculite (VM), and their combinations. In the second stage, the standard substrate (soil) was also evaluated. CH presented a high electrical conductivity and density and a low aeration space and available water. SC stood out for its lower pH and density and its greater porosity. SC and EG were viable for coffee seedling production, not differing from the commercial and standard substrates. With the exception of CH+EG, CH+CS, and EG+SC, the combined substrates allowed of a greater seedling growth than the isolated ones. CH was only viable as a substrate when combined, especially with VM. Combining CH, SC, and EG to the standard substrate improves the quality of clonal C. canephora seedlings.

Background: Esophageal cancer (EC) is the sixth leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, continuing to be a significant public health concern. The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of staging and histopathology of EC on associated mortality. The study also aims to further investigate clinical characteristics, prognostic factors, and survival outcomes in patients diagnosed with EC between 2010 and 2017. Furthermore, we analyzed the interaction between tumor histology and staging and the risk of mortality. Methods: A total of 24,011 patients diagnosed with EC between 2010 and 2017 in the United States were enrolled from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Demographic parameters, tumor stage, and histologic subtypes were analyzed and associated overall mortality (OM) and cancer-specific mortality (CSM) were measured across all subgroups. Covariates reaching the level of statistical significance, demonstrable by a p-value equal to or less than 0.01, were incorporated into a multivariate Cox proportional hazards model. A hazard ratio greater than 1 was indicative of an increased risk of mortality in the presence of the variable under discussion. Additionally, the study explores the interaction between histology and tumor stage on outcomes. Results: The majority of patients were male (80.13%) and non-Hispanic white (77.87%), with a predominant age at diagnosis of between 60 and 79 years (59.86%). Adenocarcinoma was the most common tumor subtype (68.17%), and most patients were diagnosed at a distant stage (41.29%). Multivariate analysis revealed higher mortality risks for males, older patients, unmarried individuals, and those with advanced-stage tumors. Higher income, receiving radiation or chemotherapy, and undergoing surgery were associated with lower mortality. Tumor subtype significantly influenced mortality, with squamous cell carcinoma and neuroendocrine tumors showing higher hazard ratios compared to adenocarcinoma. Adenocarcinoma is linked to a poorer prognosis at advanced stages, whereas the opposite trend is observed for SCC. Conclusions: The study identifies significant demographic and clinicopathologic factors influencing mortality in esophageal cancer patients, highlighting the importance of early diagnosis and treatment intervention. Future research should focus on tailored treatment strategies to improve survival outcomes in high-risk groups and to understand the interaction between tumor histology and tumor stage.

Madelung’s disease is characterized by the symmetric and diffuse accumulation of adipose tissue with slow and progressive tumor growth. In this case report, a patient with this syndrome was treated at Hospital das Clínicas, in Recife, PE, to reduce the lipomatous content through a lipectomy. The patient presented large masses of elastic adipose tissue around the neck and supraclavicular region and the therapeutic proposal consisted of a two-stage surgery, with liposuction and anterior cervical lipectomy, followed by liposuction and posterior cervical lipectomy. Before surgery, a cardiological opinion was requested, which indicated an intermediate risk but did not contraindicate the procedure. Four days after surgery, the patient presented bruises and peripheral edema in the cervical surgical wound but was asymptomatic. Lipectomy and liposuction techniques are considered the most effective treatment methods for Madelung disease. However, the choice of surgery should be based on a comprehensive assessment of the severity of the disease, location of the mass, and patient expectations, as both techniques have advantages and disadvantages.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a confiabilidade dos testes de sprint de 10 metros, spider run e capacidade anaeróbia, ambos os protocolos foram adaptados para o beach tennis. Material e métodos: Participaram do experimento 27 adultos saudáveis de ambos os sexos fisicamente independentes e praticantes de beach tennis. Foram realizadas 3 visitas, sendo a 1º visita no laboratório para a avaliação antropométrica e a 2º e 3º visita na quadra de beach tennis, para a realização dos testes adaptados: sprint de 10 metros, spider run e capacidade anaeróbia. Resultados: Não foram encontradas diferenças significativas (p > 0,05) entre a 1º e a 2º avaliação em todos os testes. Os testes sprint de 10m e spider run beach test apresentaram baixo tamanho do efeito (g = 0,11). A confiabilidade entre a medidas dos testes de sprint de 10 metros apresentou valores correspondente a -0,02 ± 0,20 BIAS (-0,42 -0,38) e -0,08 ± 1,58 BIAS (-3,02 -3,19) para o teste spider run beach test. Já no teste anaeróbio 0,20 ± 0,78 BIAS (-1,33 - 1,74) para o Tm (tempo médio), 0,11 ± 0,33 BIAS (-0,53 - 0,75) para o Tmin (tempo mínimo) e 0,18 ± 0,59 BIAS (-0,98 - 1,34) para o Tmax (tempo máximo) respectivamente. Conclusão: Os testes de sprint de 10 metros, spider run beach test e capacidade anaeróbia adaptados para o beach tennis apresentaram adequada confiabilidade nos valores, podendo estes testes serem utilizados em programas de treinamento para atletas desta modalidade. Nas redes sociais, de modo mais frequente do que em outros espaços de interação social, circulam múltiplos gêneros textuais multimodais, como é o caso do meme, que possui expressiva presença no dia a dia de jovens em idade escolar. A atividade de leitura na materialidade multimodal dos textos, por isso, tem sido objeto de preocupação entre professores e pesquisadores. O objetivo deste artigo é, pois, refletir sobre a inserção do gênero textual meme no cotidiano escolar das aulas de Língua portuguesa e didatizar a conceituação estrutural (COSTA, 2018) em atividades de leitura e interpretação. Este estudo, portanto tem orientação propositiva e a hipótese é de que a multimodalidade no gênero meme possa receber um tratamento teórico-metodológico que ofereça base para o estudo do diálogo entre as varias linguagens e seus contextos comunicacionais.

This paper presents a study of an automated system for identifying planktic foraminifera at the species level. The system uses a combination of deep learning methods, specifically convolutional neural networks (CNNs), to analyze digital images of foraminifera taken at different illumination angles. The dataset is composed of 1437 groups of sixteen grayscale images, one group for each foraminifera specimen, that are then converted to RGB images with various processing methods. These RGB images are fed into a set of CNNs, organized in an ensemble learning (EL) environment. The ensemble is built by training different networks using different approaches for creating the RGB images. The study finds that an ensemble of CNN models trained on different RGB images improves the system’s performance compared to other state-of-the-art approaches. The main focus of this paper is to introduce multiple colorization methods that differ from the current cutting-edge techniques; novel strategies like Gaussian or mean-based techniques are suggested. The proposed system was also found to outperform human experts in classification accuracy.
