Abstract: The density of wood is a key indicator of the carbon investment strategies of trees, impacting productivity and carbon storage. Despite its importance, the global variation in wood density and its environmental controls remain poorly understood, preventing accurate predictions of global forest carbon stocks. Here we analyse information from 1.1 million forest inventory plots alongside wood density data from 10,703 tree species to create a spatially explicit understanding of the global wood density distribution and its drivers. Our findings reveal a pronounced latitudinal gradient, with wood in tropical forests being up to 30% denser than that in boreal forests. In both angiosperms and gymnosperms, hydrothermal conditions represented by annual mean temperature and soil moisture emerged as the primary factors influencing the variation in wood density globally. This indicates similar environmental filters and evolutionary adaptations among distinct plant groups, underscoring the essential role of abiotic factors in determining wood density in forest ecosystems. Additionally, our study highlights the prominent role of disturbance, such as human modification and fire risk, in influencing wood density at more local scales. Factoring in the spatial variation of wood density notably changes the estimates of forest carbon stocks, leading to differences of up to 21% within biomes. Therefore, our research contributes to a deeper understanding of terrestrial biomass distribution and how environmental changes and disturbances impact forest ecosystems.

3. Revisiting Boehmer et al. (2021): Recent Period, Alternative Method, Different Conclusions

Abstract: We reassess Boehmer et al. (2021, BJZZ)'s seminal work on the predictive power of retail order imbalance (ROI) for future stock returns. First, we replicate their 2010-2015 analysis in the more recent 2016-2021 period. We find that the ROI's predictive power weakens significantly. Specifically, past ROI can no longer predict weekly returns on large-cap stocks, and the long-short strategy based on past ROI is no longer profitable. Second, we analyze the effect of using the alternative quote midpoint (QMP) method to identify and sign retail trades on their main conclusions. While the results based on the QMP method align with BJZZ's findings in 2010-2015, the two methods provide different conclusions in 2016-2021. Our study shows that BJZZ's original findings are sensitive to the sample period and the approach to identify ROIs.

4. Designing metainterfaces with specified friction laws

Abstract: Many devices, including touchscreens and robotic hands, involve frictional contacts. Optimizing these devices requires fine control of the interface's friction law. We lack systematic methods to create dry contact interfaces whose frictional behavior satisfies preset specifications. We propose a generic surface design strategy to prepare dry rough interfaces that have predefined relationships between normal and friction forces. Such metainterfaces circumvent the usual multiscale challenge of tribology by considering simplified surface topographies as assemblies of spherical asperities. Optimizing the individual asperities' heights enables specific friction laws to be targeted. Through various centimeter-scaled elastomer-glass metainterfaces, we illustrate three types of achievable friction laws, including linear laws with a specified friction coefficient and unusual nonlinear laws. Abstract: Aim: Ecological and anthropogenic factors shift the abundances of dominant and rare tree species within local forest communities, thus affecting species composition and ecosystem functioning. To inform forest and conservation management it is important to understand the drivers of dominance and rarity in local tree communities. We answer the following research questions: (1) What are the patterns of dominance and rarity in tree communities? (2) Which ecological and anthropogenic factors predict these patterns? And (3) what is the extinction risk of locally dominant and rare tree species?. Location: Global. Time period: 1990–2017. Major taxa studied: Trees. Methods: We used 1.2 million forest plots and quantified local tree dominance as the relative plot basal area of the single most dominant species and local rarity as the percentage of species that contribute together to the least 10% of plot basal area. We mapped global community dominance and rarity using machine learning models and evaluated the ecological and anthropogenic predictors with linear models. Extinction risk, for example threatened status, of geographically widespread dominant and rare species was evaluated. Results: Community dominance and rarity show contrasting latitudinal trends, with boreal forests having high levels of dominance and tropical forests having high levels of rarity. Increasing annual precipitation reduces community dominance, probably because precipitation is related to an increase in tree density and richness. Additionally, stand age is positively related to community dominance, due to stem diameter increase of the most dominant species. Surprisingly, we find that locally dominant and rare species, which are geographically widespread in our data, have an equally high rate of elevated extinction due to declining populations through large-scale land degradation. Main conclusions: By linking patterns and predictors of community dominance and rarity to extinction risk, our results suggest that also widespread species should be considered in large-scale management and conservation practices.

Abstract: Abstract We describe the geographical variation in tree species composition across Amazonian forests and show how environmental conditions are associated with species turnover. Our analyses are based on 2023 forest inventory plots (1 ha) that provide abundance data for a total of 5188 tree species. Within-plot species composition reflected both local environmental conditions (especially soil nutrients and hydrology) and geographical regions. A broader-scale view of species turnover was obtained by interpolating the relative tree species abundances over Amazonia into 47,441 0.1-degree grid cells. Two main dimensions of spatial change in tree species composition were identified. The first was a gradient between western Amazonia at the Andean forelands (with young geology and relatively nutrient-rich soils) and central–eastern Amazonia associated with the Guiana and Brazilian Shields (with more ancient geology and poor soils). The second gradient was between the wet forests of the northwest and the drier forests in southern Amazonia. Isolines linking cells of similar composition crossed major Amazonian rivers, suggesting that tree species distributions are not limited by rivers. Even though some areas of relatively sharp species turnover were identified, mostly the tree species composition changed gradually over large extents, which does not support delimiting clear discrete biogeographic regions within Amazonia.

9. Fast and Furious: A High-Frequency Analysis of Robinhood Users' Trading Behavior

Abstract: We analyze Robinhood (RH) investors' trading reactions to intraday hourly and overnight price changes. Contrasting with recent studies focusing on daily behaviors, we find that RH users strongly favor big losers over big gainers. We also uncover that they react rapidly, typically within an hour, when acquiring stocks that exhibit extreme negative returns. Further analyses suggest greater (lower) attention to overnight (intraday) movements and exacerbated behaviors post-COVID-19 announcement. Moreover, trading attitudes significantly vary across firm size and industry, with a more contrarian strategy towards larger-cap firms and a heightened activity on energy and consumer discretionary stocks.

Abstract: Forests are a substantial terrestrial carbon sink, but anthropogenic changes in land use and climate have considerably reduced the scale of this system1. Remote-sensing estimates to quantify carbon losses from global forests2-5 are characterized by considerable uncertainty and we lack a comprehensive ground-sourced evaluation to benchmark these estimates. Here we combine several ground-sourced6 and satellite-derived approaches2,7,8 to evaluate the scale of the global forest carbon potential outside agricultural and urban lands. Despite regional variation, the predictions demonstrated remarkable consistency at a global scale, with only a 12% difference between the ground-sourced and satellite-derived estimates. At present, global forest carbon storage is markedly under the natural potential, with a total deficit of 226 Gt (model range = 151-363 Gt) in areas with low human footprint. Most (61%, 139 Gt C) of this potential is in areas with existing forests, in which ecosystem protection can allow forests to recover to maturity. The remaining 39% (87 Gt C) of potential lies in regions in which forests have been removed or fragmented. Although forests cannot be a substitute for emissions reductions, our results support the idea2,3,9 that the conservation, restoration and sustainable management of diverse forests offer valuable contributions to meeting global climate and biodiversity targets.

Abstract: Understanding what controls global leaf type variation in trees is crucial for comprehending their role in terrestrial ecosystems, including carbon, water and nutrient dynamics. Yet our understanding of the factors influencing forest leaf types remains incomplete, leaving us uncertain about the global proportions of needle-leaved, broadleaved, evergreen and deciduous trees. To address these gaps, we conducted a global, ground-sourced assessment of forest leaf-type variation by integrating forest inventory data with comprehensive leaf form (broadleaf vs needle-leaf) and habit (evergreen vs deciduous) records. We found that global variation in leaf habit is primarily driven by isothermality and soil characteristics, while leaf form is predominantly driven by temperature. Given these relationships, we estimate that 38% of global tree individuals are needle-leaved evergreen, 29% are broadleaved evergreen, 27% are broadleaved deciduous and 5% are needle-leaved deciduous. The aboveground biomass distribution among these tree types is approximately 21% (126.4 Gt), 54% (335.7 Gt), 22% (136.2 Gt) and 3% (18.7 Gt), respectively. We further project that, depending on future emissions pathways, 17-34% of forested areas will experience climate conditions by the end of the century that currently support a different forest type, highlighting the intensification of climatic stress on existing forests. By quantifying the distribution of tree leaf types and their corresponding biomass, and identifying regions where climate change will exert greatest pressure on current leaf types, our results can help improve predictions of future terrestrial ecosystem functioning and carbon cycling.

Abstract: Determining the drivers of non-native plant invasions is critical for managing native ecosystems and limiting the spread of invasive species1,2. Tree invasions in particular have been relatively overlooked, even though they have the potential to transform ecosystems and economies3,4. Here, leveraging global tree databases5-7, we explore how the phylogenetic and functional diversity of native tree communities, human pressure and the environment influence the establishment of non-native tree species and the subsequent invasion severity. We find that anthropogenic factors are key to predicting whether a location is invaded, but that invasion severity is underpinned by native diversity, with higher diversity predicting lower invasion severity. Temperature and precipitation emerge as strong predictors of invasion strategy, with non-native species invading successfully when they are similar to the native community in cold or dry extremes. Yet, despite the influence of these ecological forces in determining invasion strategy, we find evidence that these patterns can be obscured by human activity, with lower ecological signal in areas with higher proximity to shipping ports. Our global perspective of non-native tree invasion highlights that human drivers influence non-native tree presence, and that native phylogenetic and functional diversity have a critical role in the establishment and spread of subsequent invasions.

Abstract: 1. Biodiversity is an important component of natural ecosystems, with higher species richness often correlating with an increase in ecosystem productivity. Yet, this relationship varies substantially across environments, typically becoming less pronounced at high levels of species richness. However, species richness alone cannot reflect all important properties of a community, including community evenness, which may mediate the relationship between biodiversity and productivity. If the evenness of a community correlates negatively with richness across forests globally, then a greater number of species may not always increase overall diversity and productivity of the system. Theoretical work and local empirical studies have shown that the effect of evenness on ecosystem functioning may be especially strong at high richness levels, yet the consistency of this remains untested at a global scale. 2. Here, we used a dataset of forests from across the globe, which includes composition, biomass accumulation and net primary productivity, to explore whether productivity correlates with community evenness and richness in a way that evenness appears to buffer the effect of richness. Specifically, we evaluated whether low levels of evenness in speciose communities correlate with the attenuation of the richness–productivity relationship. 3. We found that tree species richness and evenness are negatively correlated across forests globally, with highly speciose forests typically comprising a few dominant and many rare species. Furthermore, we found that the correlation between diversity and productivity changes with evenness: at low richness, uneven communities are more productive, while at high richness, even communities are more productive. 4. Synthesis. Collectively, these results demonstrate that evenness is an integral component of the relationship between biodiversity and productivity, and that the attenuating effect of richness on forest productivity might be partly explained by low evenness in speciose communities. Productivity generally increases with species richness, until reduced evenness limits the overall increases in community diversity. Our research suggests that evenness is a fundamental component of biodiversity–ecosystem function relationships, and is of critical importance for guiding conservation and sustainable ecosystem management decisions.

18. Bifurcation analysis and steady state patterns in reaction-diffusion systems augmented with self- and cross-diffusion

Abstract: In this article, we carry out a study of long-term behavior of reaction-diffusion systems augmented with self- and cross-diffusion, using an augmented Gray-Scott system as a general example. The methodology remains generic, and is therefore applicable to other systems. Simulations of the temporal model (nonlinear parabolic system) reveal the presence of steady states, often associated with energy dissipation. A Newton method based on a mixed finite element method is provided, in order to directly evaluate the steady states (nonlinear elliptic system) of the temporal system, and is validated against its solutions. Linear stability analysis (LSA) using Fourier analysis is carried out around homogeneous equilibria, and using spectral analysis around non-homogeneous ones. For the latter, the spectral problem is solved numerically. A multi-parameter bifurcation is reported. Original steady state patterns are unveiled, not observable with linear diffusion only. Two key observations are made: a dependency of the pattern with the initial condition of the system, and a dependency on the geometry of the domain.

Abstract: Abstract The transition from a milk-based diet to exclusive solid feeding deeply modifies microbiota-host crosstalk. Specifically, early ingestion of plant polysaccharides would be one of the main nutritional components to drive host-microbiota-interaction. To capture the effects of polysaccharides early-life nutrition (starch vs rapidly fermentable fiber) on the holobiont development, we investigated on the one hand the gut bacteriome and metabolome and on the other hand the transcriptome of two host gut tissues. Rabbit model was used to study post-natal co-development of the gut microbiota and its host around weaning transition. The assessment of the microbial composition of the gut appendix together with the caecum was provided for the first time. Gene expression signatures were analyzed along the gut (ileum and caecum) through high-throughput qPCR. The data collected were completed by the analysis of animal growth changes and time-series assessment of blood biomarkers. Those accessible and reusable data could help highlight the gut development dynamics as well as biological adaptation processes at the onset of solid feeding.

Methods: We integrated species abundance records from worldwide forest inventories and associated functional traits (wood density, specific leaf area and seed mass) to obtain a data set of 99,953 to 149,285 plots (depending on the trait) spanning all forested continents. We computed community‐weighted and unweighted means of trait values for each plot and related them to three broad environmental gradients and their interactions (energy availability, precipitation and soil properties) at two scales (global and biomes). Results: Our models explained up to 60% of the variance in trait distribution. At global scale, the energy gradient had the strongest influence on traits. However, within‐biome models revealed different relationships among biomes. Notably, the functional composition of tropical forests was more influenced by precipitation and soil properties than energy availability, whereas temperate forests showed the opposite pattern. Depending on the trait studied, response to gradients was more variable and proportionally weaker in boreal forests. Community unweighted means were better predicted than weighted means for almost all models. Main conclusions: Worldwide, trees require a large amount of energy (following latitude) to produce dense wood and seeds, while leaves with large surface to weight ratios are concentrated in temperate forests. However, patterns of functional composition within‐biome differ from global patterns due to biome specificities such as the presence of conifers or unique combinations of climatic and soil properties. We recommend assessing the sensitivity of tree functional traits to environmental changes in their geographic context. Furthermore, at a given site, the distribution of tree functional traits appears to be driven more by species presence than species abundance.

Abstract: Background: Little is known about gender-dependent outcomes after aortic valve replacement (AVR) through right anterior thoracotomy (RAST). The aim of our study was to analyze the mid-term outcomes of our cohort. Methods: This study is a retrospective analysis of 338 patients (2013–2022). Subgroup analysis included a gender-dependent comparison of age groups ≤60 and >60 years. Results: Women were older (69.27 ± 7.98 vs. 64.15 ± 11.47, p < 0.001) with higher Euroscore II (1.25 ± 0.73 vs. 0.94 ± 0.45, p < 0.001). Bypass and cross-clamp time were shorter (109.36 ± 30.8 vs. 117.65 ± 33.1 minutes, p = 0.01; 68.26 ± 21.5 vs. 74.36 ± 23.3 minutes, p = 0.01), while ICU, hospital stay and atrial fibrillation were higher (2.48 ± 8.2 vs. 1.35 ± 1.4 days, p = 0.005; 11 ± 7.8 vs. 9.48 ± 2.3 days, p = 0.002; 6.7% vs. 4.4%, p = 0.024). Mortality was 0.9%, while stroke was 0.6%. Age subgroup analysis showed that women were older (p = 0.025) with longer ICU and hospital stays (p < 0.001, p = 0.007). On mid-term follow-up (4.52 ± 2.67 years) of 315 patients (94.3%), there was no significant difference in survival, MACCE and re-intervention comparing gender and age groups. Conclusions: Despite older age, higher Euroscore II, longer ICU and hospital stay in women, mortality, MACCE and reoperation were low and comparable in gender and age groups. We believe that our patient-tailored heart team decision making combined with RAST translates into gender-tailored medicine, which equalizes the widely reported negative outcomes of female patients after cardiac surgery.

Abstract: This article addresses the theme of the factors, stages, progress and impact of resistance against the presence of foreign troops in their country. In 1592, the failure to resolves the crisis between Moroccan troops and Askia Mohammed Gao led to a wave of revolt in the Songhay empire against the presence of Moroccan troops, which ended in failure in the provinces of Timbuktu. , Djenné and Bamba. The establishment of resistance in the province of Dendi by Askia Nouh results from his flight from the areas conquered by the Moroccan army and the choice of the population to raise him as king of Dendi. The resistance of the populations of Dendi and their king Askia Nouh complicates the management of the presence of the Moroccan army and their policy of pacification of all the provinces of the Songhay empire in Western Sudan. The article analyzes and presents this case of popular resistance that occurred in the Middle Ages, after the fall of the Songhay empire in 1591 in Tondibi. This study analyzes the circumstances and the actors of this resistance as well as the progress and the consequences using Sudanese sources, the Tarikh. The failure to resolve the crisis peacefully in Songhay and the lack of unity in the political and military sphere remain the causes of Moroccan domination. However, the presence of Moroccan troops in Songhay generally endangers political, economic and social stability in Western Sudan.

Abstract: Abstract Using 2.046 botanically-inventoried tree plots across the largest tropical forest on Earth, we mapped tree species-diversity and tree species-richness at 0.1-degree resolution, and investigated drivers for diversity and richness. Using only location, stratified by forest type, as predictor, our spatial model, to the best of our knowledge, provides the most accurate map of tree diversity in Amazonia to date, explaining approximately 70% of the tree diversity and species-richness. Large soil-forest combinations determine a significant percentage of the variation in tree species-richness and tree alpha-diversity in Amazonian forest-plots. We suggest that the size and fragmentation of these systems drive their large-scale diversity patterns and hence local diversity. A model not using location but cumulative water deficit, tree density, and temperature seasonality explains 47% of the tree species-richness in the terra-firme forest in Amazonia. Over large areas across Amazonia, residuals of this relationship are small and poorly spatially structured, suggesting that much of the residual variation may be local. The Guyana Shield area has consistently negative residuals, showing that this area has lower tree species-richness than expected by our models. We provide extensive plot meta-data, including tree density, tree alpha-diversity and tree species-richness results and gridded maps at 0.1-degree resolution.

39. A new species of Schlegelia (Schlegeliaceae) from wet montane forest of Colombia and a key for the species of the genus

Abstract: In this paper we describe and illustrate Schlegelia longirachis a new species from montane forest remnants (1200--1900 m) in the Western slope of the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia (“Serranía de Las Quinchas” and Virolín county) in the Departments of Boyacá and Santander. A root-climbing liana, the new species is contrasted to S. fuscata, S. monachinoi and S. parviflora, the three most morphologically similar species of Schlegelia. This new species is differentiated from its putative close relatives by vegetative (texture, colour, pubescence and shape in leaves, bracts, bracteoles pedicel, calyx and corolla), inflorescences as well as floral characters (staminode absent). We provide an updated key to 24 known species of Schlegelia. For the identification key, S. fuscata and S. roseiflora are regarded here as different from S. parviflora. S. urbaniana is considered a synonym of S. axillaris, whereas S. fastigiata is separated from S. sulphurea as a recognizable species. Schlegelia has its center of distribution in Colombia, where 17 of the species are known to occur.

Abstract: Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) is the pathogen of human tuberculosis (TB). Resistance to numerous in vivo stresses, including oxidative stress, is determinant for M. tuberculosis intracellular survival, and understanding associated mechanisms is crucial for developing new therapeutic strategies. M. tuberculosis Rv2617c has been associated with oxidative stress response when interacting with other proteins in M. tuberculosis; however, its functional promiscuity and underlying molecular mechanisms remain elusive. In this study, we investigated the phenotypic changes of Mycobacterium smegmatis (M. smegmatis) expressing Rv2617c (Ms_Rv2617c) and its behavior in the presence of various in vitro stresses and phage infections. We found that Rv2617c conferred resistance to SDS and diamide while sensitizing M. smegmatis to oxidative stress (H2O2) and altered mycobacterial phenotypic properties (single-cell clone and motility), suggestive of reprogrammed mycobacterial cell wall lipid contents exemplified by increased cell wall permeability. Interestingly, we also found that Rv2617c promoted M. smegmatis resistance to infection by phages (SWU1, SWU2, D29, and TM4) and kept phage TM4 from destroying mycobacterial biofilms. Our findings provide new insights into the role of Rv2617c in resistance to oxide and acid stresses and report for the first time on its role in phage resistance in Mycobacterium.

41. On pattern formation in reaction-diffusion systems containing self- and cross-diffusion

Abstract: In this article we propose a unified framework in order to study reaction-diffusion systems containing self- and cross-diffusion using a free energy approach. This framework naturally leads to the formulation of an energy law, and to a numerical method respecting a discrete version of the latter. It constitutes an alternative method and complements the standard linear stability analysis, as it allows for the numerical study of nonlinear patterns, while monitoring the energy evolution, even in complex geometries. As an application, we propose and study a modified Gray-Scott system augmented with self- and cross-diffusion terms. Numerical simulations unveil original patterns, clearly distinct from those obtained with linear diffusion only

Abstract: A pioneer of French architectural research, Jean-Pierre Péneau died on April 1, 2021. His personal archives were recently transferred to the Centre d’archives d’architecture contemporaine in Paris and constitute a valuable legacy for understanding the life and work of Jean-Pierre Péneau in his time. Following the tribute paid in April 2022 by the Académie d’Architecture, this article would like to contribute to the interpretation of these archives. We propose two examinations that constitute the two parts of the article. The first, covering his entire career, exposes the great diversity of Jean-Pierre Péneau’s interests and, in so doing, highlights his successive decenterings and what can be called the paradox of his reputation. The second part of the paper deals in detail with a little-known aspect of Jean-Pierre Péneau’s scientific career, his first thesis prepared at the École Pratique des Hautes Études in Paris and never defended.

Abstract: En réponse aux enjeux de durabilité des filières animales, la filière cunicole française poursuit activement ses engagements de réduction de l’usage des antimicrobiens. Les antibiotiques en particulier sont généralement utilisés pour traiter les affections digestives en post-sevrage et l’arsenal préventif permettant de garantir la qualité sanitaire des élevages reste à développer. En conséquence, les troubles digestifs survenant après le sevrage des lapereaux restent une source de préoccupation. Pour améliorer la conduite des élevages, la filière peut s’appuyer sur les résultats des recherches menées en nutrition et physiologie digestive du lapin pendant cette période de vie des animaux. Nous présentons tout d’abord dans cet article un état des lieux des connaissances relatives au fonctionnement digestif du lapereau autour du sevrage, dont découle les fondements d’une stratégie alimentaire innovante au début de la vie, détaillés par la suite. Au regard des connaissances actuelles, la prise en compte des caractéristiques d’installation du microbiote bactérien digestif apparaît fondamentale pour construire la santé digestive du lapin en croissance. Le caractère particulièrement modulable du microbiote au début de la vie offre des possibilités de pilotage, en particulier via l’alimentation. L’une des pistes identifiées pour orienter la mise en place du microbiote consiste à introduire, dès la première semaine d’âge, des aliments solides dans le régime alimentaire du lapereau, tout en maintenant l’allaitement, cette piste s’inspirant d’un comportement naturel des jeunes lapereaux. Les résultats de récentes études mettant en œuvre cette stratégie en conditions expérimentales sont présentés. Moduler l’installation du microbiote intestinal des lapins d’élevage représente une démarche prometteuse dont la mise en œuvre en élevage reste à concrétiser.
