In the late stages of accretion leading up to the formation of planetesimals, particles grew to pebbles the size of 1-mm to tens of cm. That is the same size range that dominates the present-day comet mass loss. Meteoroids that size cause visible meteors on Earth. Here, we hypothesize that the size distribution and the physical and chemical properties of young meteoroid streams still contain information about the conditions in the solar nebula during these late stages of accretion. From observations of 47 young meteor showers, we find that freshly ejected meteoroids from long-period comets tend to have low bulk density and are distributed with equal surface area per log-mass interval (magnitude distribution index chi ~ 1.85), suggesting gentle accretion conditions. Jupiter-family comets, on the other hand, mostly produce meteoroids twice as dense and distributed with a steeper chi ~ 2.15 or even chi ~ 2.5, which implies that those pebbles grew from particles fragmenting in a collisional cascade or by catastrophic collisions, respectively. Both comet populations contain an admixture of compact materials that are sometimes sodium-poor, but Jupiter-family comets show a higher percentage (~8% on average) than long-period comet showers (~4%), and a wider range. While there are exceptions in both groups, the implication is that most long-period comets formed under gentle particle growth conditions, possibly near the 30 AU edge of the Trans Neptunian Disk, while most Jupiter family comets formed closer to the Sun where pebbles reached or passed the fragmentation barrier. This is possible if the Scattered Disk represents all objects scattered by Neptune during its migration, while the present-day outer Oort cloud formed only during and after the Sun had moved away from sibling stars., Comment: 82 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables

In this work the random forest algorithm GALPRO is implemented to generate photometric redshift posteriors, and its performance when trained and then applied to data from another survey is investigated. The algorithm is initially calibrated using a truth dataset compiled from the DESI Legacy survey. We find that the testing and training datasets must have very similar redshift distributions, with the range of their photometric data overlapping by at least 90% in the appropriate photometric bands in order for the training data to be applicable to the testing data. Then GALPRO is again trained using the DESI dataset and then applied to a sample drawn from the PanSTARRS survey, to explore whether GALPRO can be first trained using a trusted dataset and then applied to an entirely new survey, albeit one that uses a different magnitude system for its photometric bands, thus requiring careful conversion of the measured magnitudes for the new survey before GALPRO can be applied. The results of this further test indicate that GALPRO does not produce accurate photometric redshift posteriors for the new survey, even where the distribution of redshifts for the two datasets overlaps by over 90%. Hence, we conclude that the photometric redshifts generated by GALPRO are not suitable for generating estimates of photometric redshifts and their posterior distribution functions when applied to an entirely new survey, particularly one that uses a different magnitude system. However, our results demonstrate that GALPRO is a useful tool for inferring photometric redshift estimates in the case where a spectroscopic galaxy survey is nearly complete, but is missing some spectroscopic redshift values.

We utilized photometric data from the space telescope AKARI to identify potential planetary nebulae (PNe) and proto-planetary nebulae (PPNe) candidates. Using the colour-colour diagram, we found a region with a high concentration of established PNe and PPNe, comprising about 95% of the objects. Based on this, we identified 67 objects within this region that lack definitive classification in existing literature, suggesting they are promising candidates. We conducted Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) analysis and morphological investigations using imagery from various observatories and satellites. Single-pointing observations of NH$_3$ (1,1) and (2,2) were conducted towards 672 Planck Early Release Cold Cores (ECCs) using the Nanshan 26-m radio telescope. Out of these sources, a detection rate of 37% (249 cores) was achieved, with NH$_3$(1,1) hyperfine structure detected in 187 and NH$_3$(2,2) emission lines detected in 76 cores. The detection rate of NH3 is positively correlated with the continuum emission fluxes at a frequency of 857 GHz. Among the observed 672 cores, ~22% have associated stellar and IR objects within the beam size (~2$\arcmin$). This suggests that most of the cores in our sample may be starless. The kinetic temperatures of the cores range from 8.9 to 20.7 K, with an average of 12.3 K, indicating a coupling between gas and dust temperatures. The ammonia column densities range from 0.36 to 6.07$\times10^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$, with a median value of 2.04$\times10^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$. The fractional abundances of ammonia range from 0.3 to 9.7$\times10^{-7}$, with an average of 2.7 $\times10^{-7}$, which is one order of magnitude larger than that of Massive Star-Forming (MSF) regions and Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs). The correlation between thermal and non-thermal velocity dispersion of the NH$_3$(1,1) inversion transition indicates the dominance of supersonic non-thermal motions in the dense gas traced by NH$_3$, and the relationship between these two parameters in Planck cold cores is weaker, with lower values observed for both parameters relative to other samples under our examination. The cumulative distribution shapes of line widths in the Planck cold cores closely resemble those of the dense cores found in regions of Cepheus, and Orion L1630 and L1641, with higher values compared to Ophiuchus. A comparison of NH3 line-center velocities with those of $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O shows small differences (0.13 and 0.12 km s$^{-1}$ ), suggesting quiescence on small scales., Comment: 29 pages, 13 figures

This paper investigates the spin-up of a mass-accreting star in a close binary system passing through the first stage of mass exchange in the Hertzsprung gap. Inside an accreting star, angular momentum is carried by meridional circulation and shear turbulence. The circulation carries part of the angular momentum entering the accretor to its surface. The greater the rate of arrival of angular momentum in the accretor is, the greater this part. It is assumed that this part of the angular momentum can be removed by the disk further from the accretor. If the angular momentum in the matter entering the accretor is more than half the Keplerian value, then the angular momentum obtained by the accretor during mass exchange stage does not depend on the rate of arrival of angular momentum. The accretor may have the characteristics of a Be-star immediately after the end of mass exchange., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

The first JWST observations of hot Jupiters showed an unexpected detection of SO2 in their hydrogen-rich atmospheres. We investigate how much sulphur can be expected in the atmospheres of rocky exoplanets and which sulphur molecules can be expected to be most abundant and detectable by transmission spectroscopy. We run thermo-chemical equilibrium models at the crust-atmosphere interface, considering surface temperatures 500 to 5000 K, surface pressures 1 to 100 bar, and various sets of element abundances based on common rock compositions. Between 1000 K and 2000 K, we find gaseous sulphur concentrations of up to 25 percent above the rock in our models. SO2, SO, H2S and S2 are by far the most abundant sulphur molecules. SO2 shows potentially detectable features in transmission spectra at about 4 micron, between 7 and 8 micron, and beyond 15 micron. In contrast, the sometimes abundant H2S molecule is difficult to detect in these spectra, which are mostly dominated by H2O and CO2. Although the molecule PS only occurs with concentrations below 300 ppm, it can cause a strong absorption feature between 0.3 and 0.65 micron in some of our models for high surface pressures. The presence of a population of a large number ($\sim$400) of almost coeval (100--300 Myr) super star clusters (SSCs) in the disk of M82 offers an opportunity to construct the Cluster Initial Mass Function (CIMF) from the observed present-day Cluster Mass Function (CMF). We carry out the dynamical and photometric evolution of the CMF assuming the clusters move in circular orbits under the gravitational potential of the host galaxy using the semi-analytical simulation code EMACSS. We explore power-law and log-normal functions for the CIMFs, and populate the clusters in the disk assuming uniform, power-law, and exponential radial distribution functions. We find that the observed CMF is best produced by a CIMF that is power-law in form with an index of 1.8, for a power-law radial distribution function. More importantly, we establish that the observed turn-over in the present-day CMF is the result of observational incompleteness rather than due to dynamically induced effects, or an intrinsically log-normal CIMF, as was proposed for the fossil starburst region B of this galaxy. We present a new procedure for time calibration of the Baikal-GVD neutrino telescope. The track reconstruction quality depends on accurate measurements of arrival times of Cherenkov photons. Therefore, it is crucial to achieve a high precision in time calibration. For that purpose, in addition to other calibration methods, we employ a new procedure using atmospheric muons reconstructed in a single-cluster mode. The method is based on iterative determination of effective time offsets for each optical module. This paper focuses on the results of the iterative reconstruction procedure with time offsets from the previous iteration and the verification of the method developed. The chaotic nature of outer space and the limitation of visual displays command for much more than visual display of information and for the integration of other sensorial modalities during data exploration. Haptic real time devices may enrich the detection of astronomical events that otherwise would escape the eyes. Departing from the Harvard Astronomy Lab Orchestar (color Arduino) we present the work in progress of the Proof of Concept (PoC) of a sensitive yet simple device to Bluetooth transfer real time color into haptic motion built by Adafruit components. We assemble 2 Adafruit nRF52840 feather express with the RGB color sensor and haptic driver respectively to trigger vibrations according to the color variation from external light sources. In addition, a transparent hexagon cover will be mounted on the color sensor to maximise absorbed light from the telescope. The device aims to be a translator for people to see hear and feel the hidden information from the original data set. We also present its application in the calculation of complex astrophysics quantities such as the masses of solar coronal mass ejections.

We present FORECAST, a new flexible and adaptable software package that performs forward modeling of the output of any cosmological hydrodynamical simulations to create a wide range of realistic synthetic astronomical images. With customizable options for filters, field of view size and survey parameters, it allows users to tailor the synthetic images to their specific requirements. FORECAST constructs light-cone exploiting the output snapshots of a simulation and computes the observed flux of each simulated stellar element, modeled as a Single Stellar Population, in any chosen set of pass-band filters, including k-correction, IGM absorption and dust attenuation. As a first application, we emulated the GOODS-South field as observed for the CANDELS survey exploiting the IllustrisTNG simulation. We produce images of 200 sq. arcmin., in 13 bands (eight Hubble Space Telescope optical and near-infrared bands from ACS B435 to WFC3 H160, the VLT HAWK-I Ks band, and the four IRAC filters from Spitzer), with depths consistent with the real data. We analysed the images with the same processing pipeline adopted for real data in CANDELS and ASTRODEEP publications, and we compared the results against both the input data used to create the images, and real data, generally finding good agreement with both, with some interesting exceptions which we discuss. As part of this work, we release the FORECAST code and two datasets: the CANDELS dataset analyzed in this study, and 10 JWST CEERS survey-like images (8 NIRCam and 2 MIRI) in a field of view of 200 sq. arcmin. between z=0-20. Asteroid 4 Vesta has a set of parallel troughs aligned with its equator. Although previous evaluations suggest that it is of shock fracturing tectonic origin, we propose that the equatorial troughs can be created by secondary cratering from the largest impact basin, Rheasilvia. We calculated the trajectories of ejecta particles from Rheasilvia by considering Vesta's rapid rotation. As a result, we found that secondary craters should be parallel to the latitude. In particular, if we assume that ejecta particles are launched at an initial launch velocity of approximately 350-380 m/s and a launch angle of 25 degree, the parallel equatorial troughs, the Divalia Fossae, can be suitably explained by secondary cratering. This model works well on objects, such as Haumea, Salacia, and Chariklo, but not on Mercury, the Moon, and regular satellites., Comment: 35 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables

Typical accretion disks around massive protostars are hot enough for water ice to sublimate. We here propose to utilize the massive protostellar disks for investigating the collisional evolution of silicate grains with no ice mantle, which is an essential process for the formation of rocky planetesimals in protoplanetary disks around lower-mass stars. We for the first time develop a model of massive protostellar disks that includes the coagulation, fragmentation, and radial drift of dust. We show that the maximum grain size in the disks is limited by collisional fragmentation rather than by radial drift. We derive analytic formulas that produce the radial distribution of the maximum grain size and dust surface density in the steady state. Applying the analytic formulas to the massive protostellar disk of GGD27-MM1, where the grain size is constrained from a millimeter polarimetric observation, we infer that the silicate grains in this disk fragment at collision velocities above ~ 10 m/s. The inferred fragmentation threshold velocity is lower than the maximum grain collision velocity in typical protoplanetary disks around low-mass stars, implying that coagulation alone may not lead to the formation of rocky planetesimals in those disks. Stellar ages are key to improving our understanding of different astrophysical phenomena. However, many techniques to estimate stellar ages are highly model-dependent. The lithium depletion boundary (LDB), based on the presence or absence of lithium in low-mass stars, can be used to derive ages in stellar associations of between 20 and 500~Ma. The purpose of this work is to revise former LDB ages in stellar associations in a consistent way, taking advantage of the homogeneous \textit{Gaia} parallaxes as well as bolometric luminosity estimations that do not rely on monochromatic bolometric corrections. We studied nine open clusters and three moving groups characterised by a previous determination of the LDB age. We gathered all the available information from our data and the literature: membership, distances, photometric data, reddening, metallicity, and surface gravity. We re-assigned membership and calculated bolometric luminosities and effective temperatures using distances derived from Gaia DR2 and multi-wavelength photometry for individual objects around the former LDB. We located the LDB using a homogeneous method for all the stellar associations. Finally, we estimated the age by comparing it with different evolutionary models. We located the LDB for the twelve stellar associations and derived their ages using several theoretical evolutionary models. We compared the LDB ages among them, along with data obtained with other techniques, such as isochrone fitting, ultimately finding some discrepancies among the various approaches. The surface brightness profiles (SBPs) of star clusters hold invaluable information on the dynamical state of clusters. The observed SBPs of star clusters, especially that of globular clusters, are in good agreement with the SBPs expected for isothermal spheres containing stars of reduced kinetic energies. However, the SBPs of configurations that satisfy these theoretical criteria cannot be uniquely expressed by analytical formulae, which had hindered the analysis of dynamical state of observed clusters in external galaxies. To counter this shortcoming, it has become a practice to use empirical fitting formulae that best represent the core and halo characteristics of theoretical models. We here present a general purpose code, named nProFit, that allows fitting of the surface brightness profiles of extragalactic star clusters to theoretical star clusters, defined by dynamical models of King (1966) and Wilson (1975). In addition, we also incorporated theoretical models that result in power-law surface brightness profiles represented by Elson et al. 1987. The code returns the basic size parameters such as core radius, half-light radius and tidal radius, as well as dynamically relevant parameters, such as the volume and surface density profiles, velocity dispersion profile, total mass and the binding energy for a user-fixed mass-to-light ratio. The usefulness of the code in the dynamical study of extragalactic clusters has been already illustrated in Cuevas-Otahola et al. 2020. The code, which is python-based at the user end, but makes calls to advanced routines in Pyraf and Fortran, is now available for public use. We provide a simple geometric explanation for the source of switchbacks and associated large and one-sided transverse flows in the solar wind observed by Parker Solar Probe. The more radial, Sub-Parker Spiral structure of the heliospheric magnetic field observed previously by Ulysses, ACE, and STEREO is created within rarefaction regions where footpoint motion from the source of fast into slow wind at the Sun creates a magnetic field line connection across solar wind speed shear. Conversely, when foot-points move from the source of slow wind into faster wind, a Super-Parker Spiral field structure is formed: below the Alfven critical point, one-sided transverse field-aligned flows develop; above the Alfven critical point, the field structure contracts between adjacent solar wind flows, and the radial field component decreases in magnitude with distance from the Sun, eventually reversing into a switchback. The Sub-Parker and Super-Parker Spirals behave functionally as opposites. Observations from Parker Solar Probe confirm the paucity of switchbacks within rarefaction regions and immediately outside these rarefaction regions, we observe numerous switchbacks in the magnetic field that are directly associated with abrupt transients in solar wind speed. The radial component of the magnetic field, the speed gradients, radial Alfven speed, and the ratio of the sound speed to the radial Alfven speed all conform to predictions based on the Sub-Parker and Super-Parker Spirals within rarefaction regions and solar wind speed enhancements (spikes or jets), respectively. We present orbits and their properties for 152 globular clusters of the Milky Way galaxy obtained using average Gaia DR2 proper motions and other astrometric data from the list of Vasiliev (2019). For orbit integrating we have used the axisymmetric model of the Galactic potential based on the Navarro-Frenk-White dark halo, and modified by Bajkova and Bobylev (2016) using circular velocities of Galactic objects in wide region of Galactocentric distances (up to 200 kpc) from Bhattacharjee et.al. (2014) catalog. Based on the analysis of the obtained orbits, we have modified the composition of the subsystems of globular clusters presented in Massari et. al. We analyze the spatial and kinematic properties of a large sample of young T Tauri type stars in a 500 pc radius solar neighborhood, closely related to the Gould belt. The following parameters of the exponential density distribution have been determined: the average $(z_G)_\odot=-25\pm5$ pc and scale height $h_G=56\pm6$ pc. We propose a method of excluding background stars from the samples, which are located at large heights with respect to the symmetry plane of the Gould belt. We discovered that the expansion effect for the entire star system, $K_G=6\pm1$ km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$, is determined mainly by the dynamics of the Scorpius-Centaurus association. We show that the angular velocity of the residual intrinsic rotation of the Gould belt can reach $\Omega_G=6.9\pm0.2$ km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$ and that this rotation is opposite to the galactic rotation., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures. The kinematic properties of young stars that have not yet reached the stage of the main sequence are studied. The selection of these stars was recently carried out by Marton et al. (2019) and Vioque et al. (2020) according to the Gaia DR2 catalog using a number of photometric infrared surveys. We have determined the rotation parameters of the Galaxy and the parameters of the ellipsoids of the residual velocities. The linear velocity of the circular rotation of a solar region around the center of the Galaxy, found using 4431 stars, is equal to V_0=229.1+-4.4 km/s. The following ellipsoid parameters of their residual velocities are found from low-mass stars (of type T Tau): $\sigma_{1,2,3}=(9.45,6.99,6.61)\pm(0.94,0.43,0.32)$ km/s. For stars of intermediate masses (Herbig Ae/Be stars), their values turned out to be somewhat larger $\sigma_{1,2,3}=(13.67,9.25,7.26)\pm(2.40,2.44,0.88)$ km/s. Distant stars from both Catalogs trace the local spiral arm well. For 1212 stars, a new estimate of the pitch angle of the Local spiral arm is equal to i=-8.9+-0.1 deg., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

The analysis of the orbits of 47 dwarf satellite galaxies of the Milky Way, built using three models of the Galactic gravitational potential with different masses, is presented. The models of the Galactic potential were chosen based on the analysis of a large number of the Galaxy mass estimates known from the literature. The astrometric data needed for calculation of the initial positions and velocities (6D phase space) of the dwarf galaxies are also taken from the literature, where the average proper motions were determined on the basis of the data from the Gaia DR2 Catalog. We present the orbits and their properties of all 47 dwarf galaxies obtained by integration for 13.5 Gyr backward in all three models of the Galactic potential and give a comparison of the orbital parameters. For each model of the Galactic potential we have identified dwarf galaxies that are not connected gravitationally with the Milky Way., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables

We consider 36 candidates for close (within 1 pc) encounters with the Solar system. These stars have been selected in accordance with the results of an analysis of their motion obtained by various authors. For most stars from this list the kinematic characteristics have been taken from the Gaia DR2 catalogue. The parameters of the encounters of these stars with the Solar system have been calculated using three methods: (1) the linear one, (2) the epicyclic one, and (3) by integrating the orbits in an axisymmetric potential. We have concluded that the epicyclic method works quite well only on a time interval no longer than $\pm$1 Myr. Based on the third method, in good agreement with the first method, for the first time we have obtained the following estimates of the encounter parameters for the star Gaia DR2 3130033734235815424: $t_{min}=-0.62\pm0.12$ Myr and $d_{min}=0.30\pm0.10$ pc., Comment: 14 pages, 2 Figures, 4 Tables

We present the structural parameters of 99 Super Star Clusters (SSCs) in the Disk of M82. Moffat-EFF, King and Wilson models were fitted using a chi^2 minimisation method to background-subtracted Surface Brightness Profiles (SBPs) in F435W (B), F555W (V), and F814W (I) bands of the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The majority of the SSC profiles is best-fitted by the Moffat-EFF profile. The scale parameter rd and the shape parameter gamma in the three filters are identical within the measurement errors. The analysed sample is big enough to allow characterisation of the distributions of core radii Rc and gamma. The obtained distribution of Rc follows a log-normal form, with center and sigma(log(Rc/pc)) being 1.73 pc and 0.25, respectively. The gamma distribution is also log-normal with center and sigma(log(gamma)) being 2.88 and 0.08, respectively. M82 is well-known for the absence of current star formation in its disk, with all disk SSCs older than 50 Myr and hardly any cluster older than ~300 Myr. The derived distributions compare very well with the distributions for intermediate-age clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), which is also a low-mass late-type galaxy similar to M82. On the other hand, the distributions of Rc in both these galaxies are shifted towards larger values as compared to SSCs of similar age in the giant spiral galaxy M83. M82 and LMC also span a narrower range of gamma values as compared to that in M83., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS, 17 pages

We propose a different way to obtain the distribution of the luminosity function of quasars by using the Principle of Maximum Entropy. The input data comes from the SDSS-DR3 quasars counts, extending up to redshift 5 and limited from apparent magnitude $i=15$ to 19.1 at $z\lesssim3$ to $i=20.2$ for $z\gtrsim3$. Using only few initial data points, the Principle allows us to estimate probabilities and hence that luminosity curve. We carry out statistical tests to evaluate our results. The resulting luminosity function compares well to earlier determinations. And our results remain consistent either when the amount or choice of sampled sources is unbiasedly altered. Besides this we estimate the distribution of the luminosity function for redshifts in which there is only observational data in the vicinity., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

A novel technique is presented for describing and visualizing the local topology of the magnetic field using single-spacecraft data in the solar wind. The approach merges two established techniques: the Grad-Shafranov (GS) reconstruction method, which provides a plausible regional two-dimensional magnetic field surrounding the spacecraft trajectory, and the Partial Variance of Increments (PVI) technique that identifies coherent magnetic structures, such as current sheets. When applied to one month of Wind magnetic field data at 1-minute resolution, we find that the quasi-two-dimensional turbulence emerges as a sea of magnetic islands and current sheets. Statistical analysis confirms that current sheets associated with high values of PVI are mostly located between and within the GS magnetic islands, corresponding to X-points and internal boundaries. The method shows great promise for visualizing and analyzing single-spacecraft data from missions such as Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter, as well as 1 AU Space Weather monitors such as ACE, Wind and IMAP.

We present a detailed characterization of the Kepler-411 system (KOI 1781). This system was previously known to host two transiting planets: one with a period of 3 days ($R=2.4R_\oplus$; Kepler-411b) and one with a period of 7.8 days ($R=4.4R_\oplus$; Kepler-411c), as well as a transiting planetary candidate with a 58-day period ($R=3.3R_\oplus$; KOI 1781.03) from Kepler photometry. Here, we combine Kepler photometry data and new transit timing variation (TTV) measurements from all the Kepler quarters with previous adaptive-optics imaging results, and dynamical simulations, in order to constrain the properties of the Kepler-411 system. From our analysis, we obtain masses of 25.6$\pm$2.6$M_\oplus$ for Kepler-411b and 26.4$\pm$5.9 $M_\oplus$ for Kepler-411c, and we confirm the planetary nature of KOI 1781.03 with a mass of 15.2$\pm$5.1$M_\oplus$, hence the name Kepler-411d. Furthermore, by assuming near-coplanarity of the system (mutual inclination below $30^\circ$), we discover a nontransiting planet, Kepler-411e, with a mass of 10.8$\pm$1.1$M_\oplus$ on a 31.5-day orbit, which has a strong dynamical interaction with Kepler-411d. With densities of $1.71\pm0.39$~g\,cm$^{-3}$ and $2.32\pm0.83$~g\,cm$^{-3}$, both Kepler-411c and Kepler-411d belong to the group of planets with a massive core and a significant fraction of volatiles. The ABALONE Photosensor Technology (U.S. Pat. 9064678) is a modern, scalable technology specifically invented for cost effective mass production, robustness, and high performance. We present the performance of advanced fused silica ABALONE Photosensors, developed specifically for the potential extension of the Ice Cube neutrino experiment, and stress tested for 120 days. The resulting performance makes a significant difference: intrinsic gain in the high 100 million range, total afterpulsing rate of only 0.005 ions per photoelectron, subnanosecond timing resolution, single photon sensitivity, and unique radiopurity and UV sensitivity, thanks to the fused silica components, at no additional cost to the assembly process., Comment: 12 pages

Powerful Laser Guide Star (LGS) systems are standard for the next-generation of extremely large telescopes. However, modern earth-based astronomy has gone through a process of concentration on few sites with exceptional sky quality, resulting in those becoming more and more crowded. The future LGS systems encounter hence an environment of surrounding astronomical installations, some of which observing with large fields-of-view. We derive formulae to calculate the impact of LGS light on the camera of a neighbouring telescope and the probabilities for a laser crossing the camera field-of-view to occur, and apply these to the specific case of the next very-high-energy gamma-ray observatory "Cherenkov Telescope Array" (CTA). Its southern part shall be constructed in a valley of the Cerro Armazones, Chile, close to the "Very Large Telescope" (VLT) and the "European Extremely Large Telescope" (ELT), while its northern part will be located at the "Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos", on the Canary Island of La Palma, which also hosts the "Gran Telescopio de Canarias" (GTC) and serves as an optional site for the "Thirty Meter Telescope" (TMT), both employing LGS systems. Although finding the artificial star in the field-of-view of a CTA telescope will not disturb observations considerably, the laser beam crossing the field-of-view of a CTA telescope may be critical. We find no conflict expected for the ELT lasers, however, 1% (3%) of extra-galactic and 1% (5%) of galactic observations with the CTA may be affected by the GTC (TMT) LGS lasers, unless an enhanced version of a laser tracking control system gets implemented., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

White dwarfs (WDs) are the stellar core remnants of low mass stars. They are typically divided into three main composition groups: Oxygen Neon (ONe), Carbon Oxygen (CO) and Helium (He) WDs. The evolution of binary systems can significantly change the evolution of the binary stellar components. In particular, striping the envelope of an evolved star can give rise to a core remnant, which can later evolve into a WD with significantly different composition. Here we focus on the formation and evolution of hybrid HeCO WDs. We follow the formation and stellar evolution of such WDs for a range of initial conditions and provide their detailed structure, mass-radius relation and luminosity temperature evolution. We find that both low mass WDs (< 0.45M , typically thought to be He WDs) and intermediate-mass WDs (0.45 < MWD < 0.7, typically thought to be CO WDs) could in fact be hybrid HeCO WDs, with 5-25 (75 -95)% of their mass in He (CO). We use population synthesis calculations to infer the birth rate and properties of such WDs. We find that hybrid HeCO WD comprise the majority of young (< 2Gyr) WDs in binaries, but are more rare among older WDs in binaries. We report on results of an observing campaign to support the Juno mission. At the beginning of 2016, using TEXES (Texas Echelon cross-dispersed Echelle Spectrograph), mounted on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF), we obtained data cubes of Jupiter in the 1930--1943 cm$^{-1}$ spectral ranges (around 5 $\mu$m), which probe the atmosphere in the 1--4 bar region, with a spectral resolution of $\approx$ 0.15 cm$^{-1}$ and an angular resolution of $\approx$ 1.4". This dataset is analysed by a code that combines a line-by-line radiative transfer model with a non-linear optimal estimation inversion method. The inversion retrieves the vertical abundance profiles of NH$_3$ - which is the main contributor at these wavelengths - with a maximum sensitivity at $\approx$ 1--3 bar, as well as the cloud transmittance. This retrieval is performed on over more than one thousand pixels of our data cubes, producing maps of the disk, where all the major belts are visible. We present our retrieved NH$_3$ abundance maps which can be compared with the distribution observed by Juno's MWR (Bolton et al., 2017; Li et al., 2017) in the 2 bar region and discuss their significance for the understanding of Jupiter's atmospheric dynamics. We are able to show important latitudinal variations - such as in the North Equatorial Belt (NEB), where the NH$_3$ abundance is observed to drop down to 60 ppmv at 2 bar - as well as longitudinal variability. In the zones, we find the NH$_3$ abundance to increase with depth, from 100 $\pm$ 15 ppmv at 1 bar to 500 $\pm$ 30 ppmv at 3 bar. We also display the cloud transmittance--NH$_3$ abundance relationship, and find different behaviour for the NEB, the other belts and the zones. Using a simple cloud model, we are able to fit this relationship, at least in the NEB, including either NH$_3$-ice or NH$_4$SH particles with sizes between 10 and 100 $\mu$m., Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures, 4 tables, preprint accepted by Icarus the 04 June 2018

In recent years, Circumnuclear Star Forming Regions (CNSFRs) have been studied in different frequencies and telescopes, diverse studies about connection between nuclear activity and star formation in the CNSFRs were doing using optical data, IFS and models. We obtain data of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 at J band between 1.35-1.32$\mu$ using the 8.1m Gemini telescope and GNIRS IFU mode. We found the radial velocity and intensity maps for [FeII]$\lambda$12570, Pa$\beta$ $\lambda$12814 and FeII $\lambda$13201 lines of all the components. The gas emission has a double origin associated with photoionization by young stars or excitation by collisions, we found a high influence of shocks produced by the jet. The intensity of Pa$\beta$ emission show that this component is ionized by a younger cluster or more massive stars. From the analysis of the velocity fields, the data related with the component one of Pa$\beta$ are consistent with the presence of rotation which is displaced from the maximum continuous, our observations may point to the presence of a bar., Comment: 6 pages, 28 figures

We apply machine learning techniques in an attempt to predict and classify stellar properties from noisy and sparse time series data. We preprocessed over 94 GB of Kepler light curves from MAST to classify according to ten distinct physical properties using both representation learning and feature engineering approaches. Studies using machine learning in the field have been primarily done on simulated data, making our study one of the first to use real light curve data for machine learning approaches. We tuned our data using previous work with simulated data as a template and achieved mixed results between the two approaches. Representation learning using a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) produced no successful predictions, but our work with feature engineering was successful for both classification and regression. In particular, we were able to achieve values for stellar density, stellar radius, and effective temperature with low error (~ 2 - 4%) and good accuracy (~ 75%) for classifying the number of transits for a given star. The results show promise for improvement for both approaches upon using larger datasets with a larger minority class. Thermal atmospheric tides can torque telluric planets away from spin-orbit synchronous rotation, as observed in the case of Venus. They thus participate to determine the possible climates and general circulations of the atmospheres of these planets. In this work, we write the equations governing the dynamics of thermal tides in a local vertically-stratified section of a rotating planetary atmosphere by taking into account the effects of the complete Coriolis acceleration on tidal waves. This allows us to derive analytically the tidal torque and the tidally dissipated energy, which we use to discuss the possible regimes of tidal dissipation and examine the key role played by stratification. In agreement with early studies, we find that the frequency dependence of the thermal atmospheric tidal torque in the vicinity of synchronization can be approximated by a Maxwell model. This behaviour corresponds to weakly stably stratified or convective fluid layers, as observed in ADLM2016a. A strong stable stratification allows gravity waves to propagate, which makes the tidal torque become negligible. The transition is continuous between these two regimes. The traditional approximation appears to be valid in thin atmospheres and in regimes where the rotation frequency is dominated by the forcing or the buoyancy frequencies. Depending on the stability of their atmospheres with respect to convection, observed exoplanets can be tidally driven toward synchronous or asynchronous final rotation rates. X-ray emission associated to accretion onto compact objects displays important levels of photometric and spectroscopic time-variability. When the accretor orbits a Supergiant star, it captures a fraction of the supersonic radiatively-driven wind which forms shocks in its vicinity. The amplitude and stability of this gravitational beaming of the flow conditions the mass accretion rate responsible, in fine, for the X-ray luminosity of those Supergiant X-ray Binaries. The capacity of this low angular momentum inflow to form a disc-like structure susceptible to be the stage of well-known instabilities remains at stake. Using state-of-the-art numerical setups, we characterized the structure of a Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton flow onto a compact object, from the shock down to the vicinity of the accretor, typically five orders of magnitude smaller. The evolution of the mass accretion rate and of the bow shock which forms around the accretor (transverse structure, opening angle, stability, temperature profile) with the Mach number of the incoming flow is described in detail. The robustness of those simulations based on the High Performance Computing MPI-AMRVAC code is supported by the topology of the inner sonic surface, in agreement with theoretical expectations. We developed a synthetic model of mass transfer in Supergiant X-ray Binaries which couples the launching of the wind accordingly to the stellar parameters, the orbital evolution of the streamlines in a modified Roche potential and the accretion process. We show that the shape of the permanent flow is entirely determined by the mass ratio, the filling factor, the Eddington factor and the alpha-force multiplier. The common envelope phase is a likely formation channel for close binary systems containing compact objects. Neutron stars in common envelopes accrete at a fraction of the Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion rate, since the stellar envelope is inhomogeneous, but may still be able to accrete at hyper-critical rates (though not enough to become black holes). We show that common envelope systems consisting of a neutron star with a massive primary may be gravitational wave sources detectable in the Advanced LIGO band as far away as the Magellanic Clouds. To characterize their evolution, we perform orbital integrations using 1D models of $12 M_\odot$ and $20 M_\odot$ primaries, considering the effects of density gradient on the accretion onto the NS and spin evolution. From the range of possible accretion rates relevant to common envelope evolution, we find that these systems may be louder gravitational wave sources than low-mass X-ray binaries like Sco X-1, which are currently the target of directed searches for continuous GWs. We also find that their strain amplitude signal may allow for novel constraints on the orbital separation and inspiral timescale in common envelopes when combined with pre-common envelope electromagnetic observations., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, accepted to ApJ

Previously, Nova Puppis 1991 (V351 Pup) was measured to host one of the most massive ejections claimed in the literature. Multi-frequency radio detections from one epoch were published for this nova in the 1990's, and yet, the remaining data collected by the Very Large Array (VLA) have remained unpublished. In this paper, we analyze the remaining unpublished data sets for V351 Pup at frequencies of 4.9, 8.4, 14.9, and 22.5 GHz. We fit the resulting light curve to a model of expanding thermal ejecta, under the assumption that the radio emission is dominated by free-free radiation and accounting for high levels of clumping in the ejecta. Images of V351 Pup in both the radio (from the VLA) and H$\alpha$+[N II] (from HST) exhibit no aspherical structure, strengthening our assumption of spherical symmetry. From expansion parallax methods, we estimate the distance to V351 Pup to be $5.0 \pm 1.5$ kpc. Our light curve fit yields a value of $log_{10}(M_{ej})={-5.2} \pm {0.7}$ M$_{\odot}$ for the ejecta mass, implying that V351 Pup is on the low end of expectations for ejecta mass from classical novae. A comparison between our derived ejecta mass and theoretical models gives evidence for a very massive (1.25 M$_{\odot}$) white dwarf, which is consistent with spectroscopic evidence for an oxygen-neon white dwarf.

In this work, we employ the dark matter equations of state (DMEOSs) obtained from the rotational curves of galaxies as well as the fermionic DMEOS with m = 1.0 GeV to study the structure of darkmatter admixed neutron stars (DMANSs). Applying the equation of state in the Skyrme framework for the neutron matter (NM), we calculate the mass-radius relation for different DMANSs with various DMEOSs and central pressure of dark matter (DM) to NM ratios. Our results show that for some DMEOSs, the mass-radius relations are in agreement with new observations, e.g. EXO 1745-248, 4U 1608-52, and 4U 1820-30, which are inconsistent with the normal neutron stars. We conclude that both DMEOSs and central pressure ratios of DM to NM affect the slope of the mass-radius relation of DMANSs. This is because of the interaction between DM and NM, which leads to gravitationally or self-bound DMANSs. We study the radius of the NM sphere as well as the radius of the DM halo for different DMANSs. The results confirm that, in some cases, a NM sphere with a small radius is surrounded by a halo of DM with a larger radius. Our calculations verify that, due to the different degrees of DM domination in DMANSs, with a value of the visible radius of a star two possible DMANSs with different masses can be exist. The gravitational redshift is also calculated for DMANSs with different DMEOSs and central pressure ratios. The competition between the torques induced by solid and thermal tides drives the rotational dynamics of Venus-like planets and super-Earths orbiting in the habitable zone of low-mass stars. The tidal responses of the atmosphere and telluric core are related to their respective physical properties and strongly depend on the tidal frequency. The resulting torque determines the possible equilibrium states of the planet's spin. We compute here an analytic expression for the total tidal torque exerted on a Venus-like planet. This expression is used to characterize the equilibrium rotation of the body. Close to the star, the solid tide dominates. Far from it, the thermal tide drives the rotational dynamics of the planet. The transition regime corresponds to the habitable zone, where prograde and retrograde equilibrium states appear. We demonstrate the strong impact of the atmospheric properties and of the rheology of the solid part on the rotational dynamics of Venus-like planets, highlighting the key role played by dissipative mechanisms in the stability of equilibrium configurations., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We use high-angular-resolution images obtained with SPHERE/ZIMPOL to study the photosphere, the warm molecular layer, and the inner wind of the close-by oxygen-rich AGB star R Doradus. We present observations in filters V, cntH$\alpha$, and cnt820 and investigate the surface brightness distribution of the star and of the polarised light produced in the inner envelope. Thanks to second-epoch observations in cntH$\alpha$, we are able to see variability on the stellar photosphere. We find that in the first epoch the surface brightness of R Dor is asymmetric in V and cntH$\alpha$, the filters where molecular opacity is stronger, while in cnt820 the surface brightness is closer to being axisymmetric. The second-epoch observations in cntH$\alpha$ show that the morphology of R Dor changes completely in a timespan of 48 days to a more axisymmetric and compact configuration. The polarised intensity is asymmetric in all epochs and varies by between a factor of 2.3 and 3.7 with azimuth for the different images. We fit the radial profile of the polarised intensity using a spherically symmetric model and a parametric description of the dust density profile, $\rho(r)=\rho_\circ r^{-n}$. On average, we find exponents of $- 4.5 \pm 0.5$ that correspond to a much steeper density profile than that of a wind expanding at constant velocity. The dust densities we derive imply an upper limit for the dust-to-gas ratio of $\sim 2\times10^{-4}$ at 5.0 $R_\star$. Given the uncertainties in observations and models, this value is consistent with the minimum values required by wind-driving models for the onset of a wind, of $\sim 3.3\times10^{-4}$. However, if the steep density profile we find extends to larger distances from the star, the dust-to-gas ratio will quickly become too small for the wind of R Dor to be driven by the grains that produce the scattered light., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables

We report on a simultaneous NuSTAR and Swift observation of the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1728-34. We identified and removed four Type I X-ray bursts during the observation in order to study the persistent emission. The continuum spectrum is hard and well described by a black body with $kT=$ 1.5 keV and a cutoff power law with $\Gamma=$ 1.5 and a cutoff temperature of 25 keV. Residuals between 6 and 8 keV provide strong evidence of a broad Fe K$\alpha$ line. By modeling the spectrum with a relativistically blurred reflection model, we find an upper limit for the inner disk radius of $R_{\rm in}\leq2 R_{\rm ISCO}$. Consequently we find that $R_{\rm NS}\leq23$ km, assuming $M=1.4{\mbox{$\rm\,M_{\mathord\odot}$}}$ and $a=0.15$. The evolution with cosmic time of the star formation rate density (SFRD) and of the "Main Sequence" star formation rate-stellar mass relations are two well established observational facts. In this paper the implications of these two relations combined are analytically explored, showing that quenching of star formation must start already at very early cosmic times and the quenched fraction then dominates ever since over the star forming one. The non-thermal spectra of jetted active galactic nuclei show a variety of shapes in their low- and high energy components. In some of the brightest Fermi-LAT blazars, prominent spectral breaks at a few GeV have been regularly detected, which is inconsistent with conventional cooling effects. We study the effects of continuous time-dependent injection of electrons into the jet with differing rates, durations, locations, and power-law spectral indices, and evaluate its impact on the ambient emitting particle spectrum at a given snapshot time in the framework of a leptonic blazar emission model. The emitting electron spectrum is calculated by Compton cooling the continuously injected electrons, where target photons are assumed to be provided by the accretion disk and broad line region. We calculate the non-thermal photon spectra produced by inverse Compton scattering of these external target radiation fields using the full Compton cross-section in the head-on approximation. By means of a comprehensive parameter study we present the resulting ambient electron and photon spectra, and discuss the influence of each injection parameter. Varying the injection parameters has a notable influence on the spectral shapes, which can be used to set constraints on the injection scenarios. We apply our model to the flare state spectral energy distribution of 3C454.3, and to the FSRQ PKS1510-089. For both sources we show two different model fits, corresponding to different injection scenarios. In all four injection scenarios impulsive particle injection is disfavored. Our model aims towards bridging jet emission with acceleration models using a phenomenological approach. (abridged) Luminous blue compact galaxies are among the most active galaxies in the local universe in terms of their star formation rate per unit mass. They may be seen as the local analogs of higher redshift Lyman Break Galaxies. Studies of their kinematics is key to understanding what triggers their unusually active star formation In this work we investigate the kinematics of stars and ionised gas in Haro11, one of the most luminous blue compact galaxies in the local universe. Previous works have indicated that many such galaxies may be triggered by galaxy mergers. We have employed Fabry-Perot interferometry, long-slit spectroscopy and Integral Field Unit (IFU) spectroscopy to explore the kinematics of Haro11. We target the near infrared Calcium triplet to derive the stellar velocity field and velocity dispersion. Ionised gas is analysed through emission lines from hydrogen, [OIII] , and [SIII]. When spectral resolution and signal to noise allows we investigate the the line profile in detail and identify multiple velocity components when present. We find that to first order, the velocity field and velocity dispersions derived from stars and ionised gas agree. Hence the complexities reveal real dynamical disturbances providing further evidence for a merger in Haro11. Through decomposition of emission lines we find evidence for kinematically distinct components, for instance a tidal arm behind the galaxy. The ionised gas velocity field can be traced to large galactocentric radii, and shows significant velocity dispersion even far out in the halo. We discuss the origin of the line width, and interpreted as virial motions it indicates a mass of ~1E11 M_sun. Morphologically and kinematically Haro11 shows many resemblances with the famous Antennae galaxies, but is much denser which is the likely explanation for the higher star formation efficiency in Haro11., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

The moon, moonlight, phases of the moon and its relatively simple recurring cycle has been of interest since time immemorial to the human beings, navigators, astronomers and astrologers. The fact that its orbit is elliptical as well its plane is inclined with the plane of rotation of the earth gives rise to new moon to full moon and solar and lunar eclipses. During the phase of the full moon, the luminous flux and its apparent size will depend on its distance from the earth. In case it is at farthest point known as lunar apogee causes smallest full moon or micro full moon and if it is closest to us termed as lunar perigee will result in macro full moon, also known as super moon, a term coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979. The theoretical expressions for the lunar luminous fluxes on the earth representing the power of lunar light the earth intercepts in the direction normal to the incidence over an area of one square meter are derived for two extreme positions lunar apogee and lunar perigee. The expressions for the apparent sizes of full moons corresponding to said positions are also mentioned. We have developed Lumped Element Kinetic Inductance Detectors (LEKID) sensitive in the frequency band from 80 to 120~GHz. In this work, we take advantage of the so-called proximity effect to reduce the superconducting gap of Aluminium, otherwise strongly suppressing the LEKID response for frequencies smaller than 100~GHz. We have designed, produced and optically tested various fully multiplexed arrays based on multi-layers combinations of Aluminium (Al) and Titanium (Ti). Their sensitivities have been measured using a dedicated closed-circle 100 mK dilution cryostat and a sky simulator allowing to reproduce realistic observation conditions. The spectral response has been characterised with a Martin-Puplett interferometer up to THz frequencies, and with a resolution of 3~GHz. We demonstrate that Ti-Al LEKID can reach an optical sensitivity of about $1.4$ $10^{-17}$~$W/Hz^{0.5}$ (best pixel), or $2.2$ $10^{-17}$~$W/Hz^{0.5}$ when averaged over the whole array. The optical background was set to roughly 0.4~pW per pixel, typical for future space observatories in this particular band. The performance is close to a sensitivity of twice the CMB photon noise limit at 100~GHz which drove the design of the Planck HFI instrument. The collimation and evolution of relativistic outflows in $\gamma$-ray bursts (GRBs) are determined by their interaction with the stellar envelope through which they travel before reaching the much larger distance where the energy is dissipated and $\gamma$-rays are produced. We consider the case of a Poynting flux dominated relativistic outflow and show that it suffers strong inverse-Compton (IC) scattering drag near the stellar surface and the jet is slowed down to sub-relativistic speed if its initial magnetization parameter ($\sigma_0$) is larger than about 10$^5$. If the temperature of the cocoon surrounding the jet were to be larger than about 10 keV, then an optically thick layer of electrons and positrons forms at the interface of the cocoon and the jet, and one might expect this pair screen to protect the interior of the jet from IC drag. However, the pair screen turns out to be ephemeral, and instead of shielding the jet it speeds up the IC drag on it. Although a high $\sigma_0$ jet might not survive its passage through the star, a fraction of its energy is converted to 1-100 MeV radiation that escapes the star and appears as a bright flash lasting for about 10 s.

Low- and intermediate-mass stars go through a period of intense mass-loss at the end of their lives in a phase known as the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). During the AGB a significant fraction of their initial mass is expelled in a stellar wind. This process controls the final stages of their evolution and contributes to the chemical evolution of galaxies. However, the wind-driving mechanism of AGB stars is not yet well understood, especially so for oxygen-rich sources. Characterizing both the present-day mass-loss and wind structure and the evolution of the mass-loss rate of such stars is paramount to advancing our understanding of this processes. We modelled the dust envelope of W Hya using an advanced radiative transfer code. The dust model was analysed in the light of a previously calculated gas-phase wind model and compared to measurements available in the literature, such as infrared spectra, infrared images, and optical scattered light fractions. We find that the dust spectrum of W Hya can partly be explained by a gravitationally bound dust shell that probably is responsible for most of the amorphous Al$_2$O$_3$ emission. The composition of the large ($\sim$\,0.3\,$\mu$m) grains needed to explain the scattered light cannot be constrained, but probably is dominated by silicates. Silicate emission in the thermal infrared was found to originate from beyond 40 AU from the star and we find that they need to have substantial near-infrared opacities to be visible at such large distances. The increase in near-infrared opacity of the dust at these distances roughly coincides with a sudden increase in expansion velocity as deduced from the gas-phase CO lines. Finally, the recent mass loss of W Hya is confirmed to be highly variable and we identify a strong peak in the mass-loss rate that occurred about 3500 years ago and lasted for a few hundred years., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures

In this work, we identify 63 bona fide new candidates to T Tauri stars (TTSs) in the Taurus-Auriga region using as baseline its ultraviolet excess. The initial data set has been defined from the GALEX all sky survey (AIS). The GALEX satellite obtained images in the near ultraviolet (NUV) and far ultraviolet (FUV) bands where the TTSs show a prominent excess, compared with main sequence or giants stars. GALEX AIS surveyed the Taurus-Auriga molecular complex, as well as, a fraction of the California Nebula and the Perseus complex; bright sources and the dark clouds themselves are avoided. The properties of the TTSs in the ultraviolet (GALEX), optical (UCAC4) and infrared (2MASS) have been defined using as qualification sample the TTSs observed with the International Ultraviolet Explorer. The candidates have been identified by means of a mixed ultraviolet-optical-infrared excess set of colors; it is found that the color-color diagram FUV-NUV versus J-K is ideally suited for this purpose. From an initial sample of 163,313 bona-fide NUV sources, a final list with 63 new candidates to TTSs in the region has been produced. The search procedure has been validated by its ability to detect all known TTSs in the area surveyed: 31 TTSs. Also, it is shown that the weak-lined TTSs are located in a well defined stripe in the FUV-NUV versus J-K diagram. Einstein's General Relativity theory has been tested in many ways during the last hundred years as reviewed in this chapter. Two tests are discussed in detail in this article: the concept of a zero gravity surface, the roots of which go back to J\"arnefelt, Einstein and Straus, and the no-hair theorem of black holes, first proposed by Israel, Carter and Hawking. The former tests the necessity of the cosmological constant Lambda, the latter the concept of a spinning black hole. The zero gravity surface is manifested most prominently in the motions of dwarf galaxies around the Local Group of galaxies. The no-hair theorem is testable for the first time in the binary black hole system OJ287. These represent stringent tests at the limit of weak and strong gravitational fields, respectively. The first prediction of the existence of "relict radiation" or radiation remaining from the "Big Bang" was made in 1948. This derived from the seminal dissertation work of Ralph A. Alpher. He was a doctoral student of George A. Gamow and developed several critical advances in cosmology in late 1946, 1947, and 1948. Alpher developed the ideas of "hot" big bang cosmology to a high degree of physical precision, and was the first to present the idea that radiation, not matter, predominated the early universal adiabatic expansion first suggested by A. Friedmann in the early 1920s. Alpher and Herman predicted the residual relic black-body temperature in 1948 and 1949 at around 5 K. However, to this day, this prediction, and other seminal ideas in big bang cosmology, have often been attributed erroneously to the better-known George A. Gamow. This article reviews some of the more egregious and even farcical errors in the scholarly literature about Ralph A. Alpher and his place in the history of big bang cosmology. Two such errors are that (a) Alpher was a fictive person; or (b) that like the French mathematician Nicolas Bourbaki, Alpher was a "conglomerate" of theoreticians., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures
