We observe a weakly allowed optical transition of atomic ytterbium from the ground state to the metastable state 4f¹³5d6s² (J=2) for all five bosonic and two fermionic isotopes with resolved Zeeman and hyperfine structures. This inner-shell orbital transition has been proposed as a new frequency standard as well as a quantum sensor for new physics. We find magic wavelengths through the measurement of the scalar and tensor polarizabilities and reveal that the measured trap lifetime in a three-dimensional optical lattice is 1.9(1) s, which is crucial for precision measurements. We also determine the g factor by an interleaved measurement, consistent with our relativistic atomic calculation. This work opens the possibility of an optical lattice clock with improved stability and accuracy as well as novel approaches for physics beyond the standard model.

Ultracold atoms in an optical lattice provide a unique approach to study quantum many-body systems, previously only possible by using condensed-matter experimental systems. This new approach, often called quantum simulation, becomes possible because of the high controllability of the system parameters and the inherent cleanness without lattice defects and impurities. In this article, we review recent developments in this rapidly growing field of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice, with special focus on quantum simulations using our newly created quantum many-body system of two-electron atoms of ytterbium. In addition, we also mention other interesting possibilities offered by this novel experimental platform, such as applications to precision measurements for studying fundamental physics and a Rydberg atom quantum computation.

We report on the observation of the spin-exchange dynamics of ¹⁷¹Yb atoms in the ground state ¹S₀ and in the metastable state ³P₀. We implement the mixed-dimensional two-orbital system using near-resonant and magic-wavelength optical lattices, where the ¹S₀ and ³P₀ atoms are itinerant in a one-dimensional tube and localized in three dimensions, respectively. By exploiting an optical Stern-Gerlach method, we observe the spin depolarization of the ¹S₀ atoms induced by the spin-exchange interaction with the ³P₀ atom. Our work could pave the way to the quantum simulation of the Kondo effect.

We investigate multicomponent fermions in a flat band and predict experimental signatures of non-Fermi-liquid behavior. We use dynamical mean-field theory to obtain the density, double occupancy and entropy in a Lieb lattice for N = 2 and N = 4 components. We derive a mean-field scaling relation between the results for different values of N, and study its breakdown due to beyond mean-field effects. The predicted signatures occur at temperatures above the Néel temperature and persists even in the presence of a trapping potential, thus they are observable in current ultracold gas experiments.

We develop and utilize the SU(3) truncated Wigner approximation (TWA) in order to analyze far-from-equilibrium quantum dynamics of strongly interacting Bose gases in an optical lattice. Specifically, we explicitly represent the corresponding Bose-Hubbard model at an arbitrary filling factor with restricted local Hilbert spaces in terms of SU(3) matrices. Moreover, we introduce a discrete Wigner sampling technique for the SU(3) TWA and examine its performance as well as that of the SU(3) TWA with the Gaussian approximation for the continuous Wigner function. We directly compare outputs of these two approaches with exact computations regarding dynamics of the Bose-Hubbard model at unit filling with a small size and that of a fully connected spin-1 model with a large size. We show that both approaches can quantitatively capture quantum dynamics on a timescale of ℏ/(Jz), where J and z denote the hopping energy and the coordination number. We apply the two kinds of SU(3) TWA to dynamical spreading of a two-point correlation function of the Bose-Hubbard model on a square lattice with a large system size, which has been measured in recent experiments. Noticeable deviations between the theories and experiments indicate that proper inclusion of effects of the spatial inhomogeneity, which is not straightforward in our formulation of the SU(3) TWA, may be necessary.

Quantum transport is ubiquitous in physics. So far, quantum transport between terminals has been extensively studied in solid state systems from the fundamental point of views such as the quantized conductance to the applications to quantum devices. Recent works have demonstrated a cold-atom analog of a mesoscopic conductor by engineering a narrow conducting channel with optical potentials, which opens the door for a wealth of research of atomtronics emulating mesoscopic electronic devices and beyond. Here we realize an alternative scheme of the quantum transport experiment with ytterbium atoms in a two-orbital optical lattice system. Our system consists of a multi-component Fermi gas and a localized impurity, where the current can be created in the spin space by introducing the spin-dependent interaction with the impurity. We demonstrate a rich variety of localized-impurity-induced quantum transports, which paves the way for atomtronics exploiting spin degrees of freedom.

A continuous excitation band of a free-bound photoassociation transition of ytterbium atoms is observed as a red wing of the ¹S₀-¹P₁ atomic line at 399 nm for a hot thermal vapor. The excitation to the 0u⁺ molecular state is observed by monitoring fluorescence from the ³P₁ state atoms, which allows us to detect the production of Yb₂ molecules with high sensitivity. The photoassociation is characterized in comparison with transitions to atomic Rydberg states. The time profile of the fluorescence signal suggests that the 0u⁺ molecular state predissociates with states correlating to the ¹S₀+³D₂ atomic states.

We report our realization of a parity–time (PT)-symmetric non-Hermitian many-body system using cold atoms with dissipation. After developing a theoretical framework on PT-symmetric many-body systems using ultracold atoms in an optical lattice with controlled dissipation, we describe our experimental setup utilizing one-body atom loss as dissipation with special emphasis on calibration of important system parameters. We discuss loss dynamics observed experimentally.

An optical lattice quantum simulator is an ideal experimental platform to investigate nonequilibrium dynamics of a quantum many-body system, which is, in general, hard to simulate with classical computers. Here, we use our quantum simulator of the Bose-Hubbard model to study dynamics far from equilibrium after a quantum quench. We successfully confirm the energy conservation law in the one- and three-dimensional systems and extract the propagation velocity of the single-particle correlation in the one- and two-dimensional systems. We corroborate the validity of our quantum simulator through quantitative comparisons between the experiments and the exact numerical calculations in one dimension. In the computationally hard cases of two or three dimensions, by using the quantum-simulation results as references, we examine the performance of a numerical method, namely, the truncated Wigner approximation, revealing its usefulness and limitation. This work constitutes an exemplary case for the usage of analog quantum simulators.

We propose a quantum gas microscope for ultracold atoms that enables nondestructive atom detection, thus evading higher-band excitation and change of the internal degrees of freedom. We show that photon absorption of a probe beam cannot be ignored even in dispersive detection to obtain a signal-to-noise ratio greater than unity because of the shot noise of the probe beam under a standard measurement condition. The first scheme we consider for the nondestructive detection, applicable to an atom that has an electronic ground state without spin degrees of freedom, is to utilize a magic-wavelength condition of the optical lattice for the transition for probing. The second is based on the dispersive Faraday effect and squeezed quantum noise and is applicable to an atom with spins in the ground state. In this second scheme, a scanning microscope is adopted to exploit the squeezed state and reduce the effective losses. Application to ultracold ytterbium atoms is discussed.

We report our experimental results on the collisional physics between non-S-state atoms (ytterbium (Yb), effectively a two-electron system, in the metastable ³P₂ state) and S-state atoms (lithium (Li), an alkali metal, in the ground state). At low magnetic fields, by measuring inelastic interspecies collisional losses in the double quantum degenerate mixture we reveal the strong dependence of the inelastic losses on the internal spin states of both species and suppressed losses in stretched state configurations. Increasing the magnetic field up to 800 G we further investigate the magnetic field dependence of the collisional interactions. There, smoothly increasing inelastic losses are observed towards higher fields. The combined knowledge of both the magnetic field and the spin state dependence of the collisional losses of this prototypical mixture system of non-S-state and S-state atoms provides a significant step forward towards controllable impurity physics realized in the Yb-Li ultracold system.

We investigate the mechanisms of control and suppression of prethermalization in N-component alkaline-earth-metal gases. To this end, we compute the short-time dynamics of the instantaneous momentum distribution and the relative population for different initial conditions after an interaction quench, accounting for the effect of initial interactions. We find that switching on an interaction that breaks the SU(N) symmetry of the initial Hamiltonian, thus allowing for the occurrence of spin-changing collisions, does not necessarily lead to a suppression of prethermalization. However, the suppression will be most effective in the presence of SU(N)-breaking interactions provided the number of components N≥4 and the initial state contains a population imbalance that breaks the SU(N) symmetry. We also find the conditions on the imbalance initial state that allow for a prethermal state to be stabilized for a certain time. Our study highlights the important role played by the initial state in the prethermalization dynamics of multicomponent Fermi gases. It also demonstrates that alkaline-earth-metal Fermi gases provide an interesting playground for the study and control of prethermalization.

Quantum interference lies at the heart of quantum mechanics. By utilizing destructive interference, it is possible to transfer a physical object between two states without populating an intermediate state which is necessary to connect the initial and final states. A famous application is a technique of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage, where atomic internal states can be transfered with high efficiency regardless of lossy intermediate states. One interesting situation is a case where the initial and final states are spatially well separated. Quantum mechanics allows a particle to move without practical possibility of being found at the intermediate area. Here we demonstrate this spatial adiabatic passage with ultracold atoms in an optical lattice. Key to this is the existence of dark eigenstates forming a flat energy band, with effective transfer between two sublattices being observed. This work sheds light on a study of coherent control of trapped cold atoms.

Several extensions to the Standard Model of particle physics, including light dark matter candidates and unification theories predict deviations from Newton’s law of gravitation. For macroscopic distances, the inverse-square law of gravitation is well confirmed by astrophysical observations and laboratory experiments. At micrometer and shorter length scales, however, even the state-of-the-art constraints on deviations from gravitational interaction, whether provided by neutron scattering or precise measurements of forces between macroscopic bodies, are currently many orders of magnitude larger than gravity itself. Here we show that precision spectroscopy of weakly bound molecules can be used to constrain non-Newtonian interactions between atoms. A proof-of-principle demonstration using recent data from photoassociation spectroscopy of weakly bound Yb2 molecules yields constraints on these new interactions that are already close to state-of-the-art neutron scattering experiments. At the same time, with the development of the recently proposed optical molecular clocks, the neutron scattering constraints could be surpassed by at least two orders of magnitude.

We report on the investigation of the scattering properties between the ground state S01 and the metastable state P03 of the fermionic isotope of Yb171. We measure the s-wave scattering lengths in the two-orbital collision channels as aeg+=225(13)a0 and aeg−=355(6)a0, using clock transition spectroscopy in a three-dimensional optical lattice. The results show that the interorbital spin-exchange interaction is antiferromagnetic, indicating that Yb171 is a promising isotope for the quantum simulation of the Kondo effect with the two-orbital system.

We present an experimental measurement of the ensemble averages of both the kinetic and interaction energies of the three-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model at finite temperature and various optical lattice depths across weakly to strongly interacting regimes, for an almost unit filling factor within single-band tight-binding approximation. The kinetic energy is obtained through Fourier transformation of a time-of-flight signal, and the interaction energy is measured using a newly developed atom-number-projection spectroscopy technique, by exploiting an ultranarrow optical transition of two-electron atoms. The obtained experimental results can be used as benchmarks for state-of-the-art numerical methods of quantum many-body theory. As an illustrative example, we compare the measured energies with numerical calculations involving the Gutzwiller and cluster-Gutzwiller approximations, assuming realistic trap potentials and particle numbers at nonzero entropy (finite temperature); we obtain good agreement without fitting parameters. We also discuss the possible application of this method to temperature estimations for atoms in optical lattices using the thermodynamic relation. This study offers a unique advantage of cold atom system for “quantum simulators.”

We report an experimental study of dynamics of the metastable ³P₂ state of bosonic ytterbium atoms in an optical lattice. The dissipative Bose-Hubbard system with on-site two-body atom loss is realized via its intrinsic strong inelastic collision of the metastable ³P₂ atoms. We investigate the atom loss behavior with the unit-filling Mott insulator as the initial state and find that the atom loss is suppressed by the strong correlation between atoms, which is attributed to both the on-site interaction and the inelastic loss. Also, as we decrease the potential depth of the lattice, we observe the growth of the phase coherence and find its suppression owing to the dissipation.

We study the Higgs mode of superfluid Bose gases in a three-dimensional optical lattice, which emerges near the quantum phase transition to the Mott insulator at commensurate fillings. Specifically, we consider responses of the Higgs mode to temporal modulations of the onsite interaction and the hopping energy. In order to calculate the response functions including the effects of quantum and thermal fluctuations, we map the Bose-Hubbard model onto an effective pseudospin-1 model and use a perturbative expansion based on the imaginary-time Green's function theory. We also include the effects of an inhomogeneous trapping potential by means of a local density approximation. We find that the response function for the hopping modulation is equal to that for the interaction modulation within our approximation. At the unit filling rate and in the absence of a trapping potential, we show that the Higgs mode can exist as a sharp resonance peak in the dynamical susceptibilities at typical temperatures. However, the resonance peak is significantly broadened due to the trapping potential when the modulations are applied globally to the entire system. We suggest that the Higgs mode can be detected as a sharp resonance peak by partial modulations around the trap center.

The Dirac fermion is an important fundamental particle appearing in high-energy physics and topological insulator physics. In particular, a Dirac fermion in a one-dimensional lattice system exhibits the essential properties of topological physics. However, the system has not been quantum simulated in experiments yet. Herein, we propose a one-dimensional generalized lattice Wilson-Dirac fermion model and study its topological phase structure. We show the experimental setups of an atomic quantum simulator for the model, in which two parallel optical lattices with the same tilt for trapping cold fermion atoms and a laser-assisted hopping scheme are used. Interestingly, we find that the model exhibits nontrivial topological phases characterized by gapless edge modes and a finite winding number in the broad regime of the parameter space. Some of the phase diagrams closely resemble those of the Haldane model. We also discuss topological charge pumping and a lattice Gross-Neveu model in the system of generalized Wilson-Dirac fermions.

We present high-resolution two-color photoassociation spectroscopy of Bose-Einstein condensates of ytterbium atoms. The use of narrow Raman resonances and careful examination of systematic shifts enabled us to measure 13 bound-state energies for three isotopologues of the ground-state ytterbium molecule with standard uncertainties of the order of 500 Hz. The atomic interactions are modeled using an ab initio based mass-scaled Born-Oppenheimer potential whose long-range van der Waals parameters and total WKB phase are fitted to experimental data. We find that the quality of the fit of this model, of about 112.9 kHz (rms) can be significantly improved by adding the recently calculated beyond-Born-Oppenheimer (BBO) adiabatic corrections [J. J. Lutz and J. M. Hutson, J. Mol. Spectrosc. 330, 43 (2016)] and by partially treating the nonadiabatic effects using distance-dependent reduced masses. Our BBO interaction model represents the experimental data to within about 30.2 kHz on average, which is 3.7 times better than the “reference” Born-Oppenheimer model. We calculate the s-wave scattering lengths for bosonic isotopic pairs of ytterbium atoms with error bars over two orders of magnitude smaller than previous determinations. For example, the s-wave scattering length for ¹⁷⁴Yb is +5.55812(50) nm.

We report the momentum-resolved measurement of Bloch bands in an optical Lieb lattice for a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). A BEC in the lattice is transported to a desired quasimomentum by applying a constant force. The energy dispersion of the lowest band is obtained by integrating measured group velocities. We also measure the gap from the lowest band to the higher bands with the same quasimomentum, which can be extracted from the oscillation of the sublattice populations after preparing a superposition of the band eigenstates. We show that the experimental results agree with a band calculation based on the Bogoliubov approximation. It is revealed that the second band, which should be flat in a single-particle description, is shifted and, in particular, distorted around the Brillouin zone edge as the interaction strength increases.

Experimentally the spin dependence of inelastic collisions between ytterbium (Yb) in the metastable ${}^{3}{{rm{P}}}_{2}$ state and lithium (Li) in the ${}^{2}{{rm{S}}}_{1/2}$ ground state manifold is investigated at low magnetic fields. Using selective excitation all magnetic sublevels m J of ${}^{174}$Yb(${}^{3}{{rm{P}}}_{2}$) are accessed and four of the six lowest lying magnetic sublevels of ${}^{6}{rm{L}}{rm{i}}$ are prepared by optical pumping. On the one hand, m J -independence of collisions involving Li($F=1/2$) atoms is found. A systematic m J -dependence in collisions with Li($F=3/2$) atoms, in particular suppressed losses for stretched collisional states, is observed on the other hand. Further, m J -changing processes are found to be of minor relevance. The span of observed inelastic collision rates is between $1times {10}^{-11}$ and $40times {10}^{-11}, {mathrm{cm}}^{3}, {{rm{s}}}^{-1}$, and a possible origin of the observed behavior is discussed.

Dissipation is ubiquitous in nature and plays a crucial role in quantum systems such as causing decoherence of quantum states. Recently, much attention has been paid to an intriguing possibility of dissipation as an efficient tool for the preparation and manipulation of quantum states. We report the realization of successful demonstration of a novel role of dissipation in a quantum phase transition using cold atoms. We realize an engineered dissipative Bose-Hubbard system by introducing a controllable strength of two-body inelastic collision via photoassociation for ultracold bosons in a three-dimensional optical lattice. In the dynamics subjected to a slow ramp-down of the optical lattice, we find that strong on-site dissipation favors the Mott insulating state: The melting of the Mott insulator is delayed, and the growth of the phase coherence is suppressed. The controllability of the dissipation is highlighted by quenching the dissipation, providing a novel method for investigating a quantum many-body state and its nonequilibrium dynamics.

State of the art photoassociative measurements of bound state energies in the ground state Yb[2] molecule are used to establish limits on non-Newtonian gravity at Yukawa ranges of nanometers.

We establish an experimental method for a detailed investigation of inelastic collisional properties between ytterbium(Yb) in themetastable [3]P[2]state and ground state lithium (Li). By combining an optical lattice and a direct excitation to the [3]P[2]state we achieve high selectivity on the collisional partners.Using thismethodwe determine inelastic loss coefficients in collisions between [174]Yb([3]P[2]) with magnetic sublevels of mJ = 0 and -2 and ground state [6]Li to be (4.4 ± 0.3) x10[-11] cm3 s[-1] and (4.7 ± 0.8)x10-11 cm[3] s[-1], respectively. Absence of spin changing processes in Yb([3]P[2])-Li inelastic collisions at low magnetic fields is confirmed by inelastic loss measurements on themJ=0 state.Wealso demonstrate that our method allows us to look into loss processes in few-body systems separately.

A system of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice has been regarded as an ideal quantum simulator for a Hubbard model with extremely high controllability of the system parameters. While making use of the controllability, a comprehensive measurement across the weakly to strongly interacting regimes in the Hubbard model to discuss the quantum many-body state is still limited. Here we observe a great change in the excitation energy spectra across the two regimes in an atomic Bose–Hubbard system by using a spectroscopic technique, which can resolve the site occupancy in the lattice. By quantitatively comparing the observed spectra and numerical simulations based on sum rule relations and a binary fluid treatment under a finite temperature Gutzwiller approximation, we show that the spectra reflect the coexistence of a delocalized superfluid state and a localized insulating state across the two regimes.

Lattice gauge theory has provided a crucial non-perturbative method in studying canonical models in high-energy physics such as quantum chromodynamics. Among other models of lattice gauge theory, the lattice gauge-Higgs model is a quite important one because it describes a wide variety of phenomena/models related to the Anderson-Higgs mechanism, such as superconductivity, the standard model of particle physics, and the inflation process of the early Universe. In this paper, we first show that atomic description of the lattice gauge model allows us to explore real-time dynamics of the gauge variables by using the Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Numerical simulations of the time development of an electric flux reveal some interesting characteristics of the dynamic aspect of the model and determine its phase diagram. Next, to realize a quantum simulator of the U(1) lattice gauge-Higgs model on an optical lattice filled by cold atoms, we propose two feasible methods: (i) Wannier states in the excited bands and (ii) dipolar atoms in a multilayer optical lattice. We pay attention to the constraint of Gauss's law and avoid nonlocal gauge interactions.

Although kinetic energy of a massive particle generally has quadratic dependence on its momentum, a flat, dispersionless energy band is realized in crystals with specific lattice structures. Such macroscopic degeneracy causes the emergence of localized eigenstates and has been a key concept in the context of itinerant ferromagnetism. We report the realization of a “Lieb lattice” configuration with an optical lattice, which has a flat energy band as the first excited state. Our optical lattice potential has various degrees of freedom in its manipulation, which enables coherent transfer of a Bose-Einstein condensate into the flat band. In addition to measuring lifetime of the flat band population for different tight-binding parameters, we investigate the inter-sublattice dynamics of the system by projecting the sublattice population onto the band population. This measurement clearly shows the formation of the localized state with the specific sublattice decoupled in the flat band, and even detects the presence of flat-band breaking perturbations, resulting in the delocalization. Our results will open up the possibilities of exploring the physics of flat bands with a highly controllable quantum system.

We observe magnetic Feshbach resonances in a collision between the ground and metastable states of two-electron atoms of ytterbium (Yb). We measure the on-site interaction of doubly occupied sites of an atomic Mott-insulator state in a three-dimensional optical lattice as a collisional frequency shift in a high-resolution laser spectroscopy. The observed spectra are well fitted by a simple theoretical formula, in which two particles with an s-wave contact interaction are confined in a harmonic trap. This analysis reveals a wide variation of the interaction with a resonance behavior around a magnetic field of about 1.1 G for the energetically lowest magnetic sublevel of [170]Yb, as well as around 360 mG for the energetically highest magnetic sublevel of [174]Yb. The observed Feshbach resonance can only be induced by an anisotropic interatomic interaction. This scheme will open the door to a variety of studies using two-electron atoms with tunable interaction.

The Hubbard model accounts for many of the diverse phenomena observed in solid-state materials, despite incorporating only nearest-neighbour hopping and on-site interactions for correlated electrons. One interesting extension to the model involves enlarging its spin symmetry to SU( N > 2 ) , which describes systems with orbital degeneracy. Here we report a successful formation of the SU(6) symmetric Mott-insulator state with an atomic Fermi gas of ytterbium ([173]Yb) atoms in a three-dimensional optical lattice. In addition to the suppression of compressibility and the charge-excitation gap characteristic of a Mott-insulating phase, we reveal that the SU(6) system can achieve lower temperatures than the SU(2) state, owing to differences in the entropy carried by an isolated spin. The mechanism is analogous to Pomeranchuk cooling in solid [3]He and will be helpful for investigating exotic quantum phases of the SU( N ) Hubbard system at extremely low temperatures.

We report the realization of a novel degenerate Fermi mixture with an SU(2)×SU(6) symmetry in a cold atomic gas. We successfully cool the mixture of the two fermionic isotopes of ytterbium 171Yb with the nuclear spin I=1/2 and 173Yb with I=5/2 below the Fermi temperature T_{F} as 0.46TF for 171Yb and 0.54TF for 173Yb. The same scattering lengths for different spin components make this mixture featured with the novel SU(2)×SU(6) symmetry. The nuclear spin components are separately imaged by exploiting an optical Stern-Gerlach effect. In addition, the mixture is loaded into a 3D optical lattice to implement the SU(2)×SU(6) Hubbard model. This mixture will open the door to the study of novel quantum phases such as a spinor Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-like fermionic superfluid.
