A simple 1-D model is presented to study the effects of the wall heat flux, location of the nucleation site, channel dimensions and fluid properties on the pressure fluctuations caused by confined bubble growth in rectangular microchannels, for zero upstream compressibility. A simple isothermal compressibility model is then used to study the effects of the initial volume of non-condensable gas trapped in the upstream plenum, initial inlet velocity and nucleation site location on local pressure fluctuations and transient flow reversal. Many experiments explore the hydrodynamic boundary of a surface by approaching a colloidal sphere and measuring the occurring lubrication force. However, in this case many different parameters like wettability and surface roughness influence the result. In the experiment these cannot be separated easily. For a deeper understanding of such surface effects a tool is required that predicts the influence of different surface properties. Here computer simulations can help. In this paper we present lattice Boltzmann simulations of a sphere submerged in a Newtonian liquid and show that our method is able to reproduce the theoretical predictions. In order to provide high precision simulation results the influence of finite size effects has to be controlled. We study the influence of the required system size and resolution of the sphere and demonstrate that already moderate computing ressources allow to keep the error below 1%. We describe an analytical, computational and experimental study of parallel valveless micropumps. A one dimensional model of a parallel micropump is presented and compared with available experimental data. The model confirms the linear decrease of the volume flux with pressure rise which is consistent with the experiments. The computational study showed a similar linear decrease but highlighted the effect of turbulence closures on the rectified mean flow, with the experimental data sitting between the turbulent and laminar closure regimes. The experimental study confirmed the importance of the displacement distance of fluid through the nozzle compared to nozzle length in the setting whether the flow regime is streaming or rectified. General conclusions are made about how to improve the pumping efficiency of micropumps. An experimental study of two-phase pressure drop in a horizontal circular microchannel is presented in this paper. Test tube is made of fused silica having an internal diameter of 781μm with a total length of 261mm and a heated length of 191mm.The external surface of the test tube is coated with an electrically conductive thin layer of ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) for direct heating of test section. Refrigerant R134a was used as the working fluid and mass flux during the experiments was varied from 100 to 650 kg/m2sec. Experiments were performed at a system pressure of 7.70 bar (corresponding to saturation temperature of 30oC). Two-phase frictional pressure drop characteristics with different mass flux, vapour fraction and heat flux were explored in detail. Finally, the prediction capability of well known available correlations in the literature, developed for macrochannels and others especially developed for microchannels was also checked. The homogeneous model predicts the data fairly well with a mean absolute deviation (MAD) of 19% and 69% of data within ±20% error band. The Müller-Steinhagen and Heck (1986) correlation developed for macrochannels predicts the data with a MAD of 19% and 61% of data within ±20% error band. The Mishima and Hibiki (1996) correlation, developed for microchannels, also shows fairly good approximation of the data with MAD of 19% and 57% of data within ±20% error band.

Blood rheology is complex and nonlinear. The effective viscosity variations are important due to red blood cells packing inside capillaries, the socalled FåhræusLindquist effect, whilst concomitantly phase segregation appears in bifurcations. We have performed direct numerical simulations of different nonlinear rheological models of the blood on realistic threedimensional microvascular networks. These simulations point out two significant results. First, various rheological models lead to very similar pressure distributions over the whole range of physiologically relevant hematocrits. Secondly, different models for phase segregation lead to very distinct hematocrit distributions in the microvascular network. Moreover, for all the investigated rheological models, the hematocrit distribution very weakly affects the pressure distribution, when prescribing uniform pressure boundary conditions. Rheological behaviour of Alumina (Al2O3) based nanofluids (NFs) has been studied and found to be exhibit unexpected behaviour. Two base-fluids viz, water and ethylene glycols (EG). Three particle sizes (11, 45 and 150 nm), varying over an order of magnitude, were used to analyze the effect of particle size. The experimental data has shown typical Newtonian behavior for both W based and EG based alumina NFs The viscosity of EG based NFs is found to be anomalously reduced compared to the base fluid. This reduction in viscosity may be due to hygroscopic nature of EG or due to the presence of water in as-received high concentration sample also, as told by some researchers. However, this phenomenon was absent for water based NFs. The inter-related effects of particle size, concentration and mode of dispersion (mono or poly-dispersed) were investigated. To eliminate the effect of size variation, mono dispersed NFs are obtained by centrifuging and re-suspension of parent NFs. Particle migration under shear is attributed to the reduction of viscosity. The increase in bulk viscosity with particle size reduction is attributed to the surface forces acting between the particles and the medium in a suspension.

In very recent years microdevices, due to their potency in replacing large-scale conventional laboratory instrumentation, are becoming a fast and low cost technology for the treatment of several chemical and biological processes. In particular microfluidics has been massively investigated, aiming at improving the performance of chemical reactors. This is because of the fact that reaction is often an interface phenomenon where the greater the surface to volume ratio, the higher the reaction speed, and microscale mixing increases the interfacial area (in terms of mixing-induced-by-vortices generation). However, microfluidic systems suffer from the limitation that they are characterized mostly by very low Reynolds numbers, with the consequence that (i) they cannot take advantage from the turbulence mixing support, and (ii) viscosity hampers proper vortex detection. Therefore, the proper design of micro-channels (MCs) becomes essential. In this framework, several geometries have been proposed to induce mixing vortices in MCs. However a quantitative comparison between proposed geometries in terms of their passive mixing potency can be done only after proper definition of vortex formation (topology, size) and mixing performance. The objective of this study is to test the ability of different fluid dynamic metrics in vortex detection and mixing effectiveness in micromixers. This is done numerically solving different conditions for the flow in a classic passive mixer, a ring shaped MC. We speculate that MCs design could take advantage from fluidic metrics able to rank properly flow related mixing.

The goal of any cancer therapy is to achieve efficient, tissue-specific targeting of drugs to cancer cells. However, most anticancer agents act on healthy and malignant tissue alike, potentially resulting in side effects to healthy tissue. This has motivated the development of treatment strategies that are cancer-cell specific; one approach uses biomimetic polymer vesicles (BPV) to deliver chemotherapeutic drugs into cells before releasing them. BPVs are synthetic membrane enclosed, nanometre-sized structures, and provide ideal drug delivery vectors because specific targeting to cancer cells can be achieved by coating with tumourspecific molecules. We present several mathematical models covering a wide range of length-scales pertinent to BPV-mediated delivery protocols and focus on capturing the in vivo environment by evaluating the impact of the underlying vascular structure upon the governing transport mechanisms. Firstly, we present models of specific binding of BPVs to cancer cells. Subsequently we examine the implications of these model outputs in the contexts of both discrete capillary architectures and higher level homogenized-models that track blood and BPV transport at the tissue scale (both intra- and extra-tumorally). Numerical solutions are discussed, and recommendations are presented on that optimal integration of the models to generate quantitative predictions associated with BPV treatment efficacy.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is a very effective tool that gives a microscopic insight into the mechanisms of complex physical phenomena. This paper uses MD simulation to study the evaporation of a liquid from a heated surface. As for the argon/platinum model, a group of simulations starts from a fixed lower wall with the temperature of 110K. In this system, argon molecule numbers of 784, 1200, 1440 are simulated respectively. Additional simulations for argon models are based on superheat conditions, which indicate that the variation of ultra-thin liquid film thickness is very small with the different numbers of argon molecules. Also, it shows that if the argon molecule numbers increase, the extra molecules accumulate near the cooling wall. In terms of the MD simulation for the water/magnesium model, water evaporates from a magnesium heating wall at different temperatures and an initial study has been carried out. Moreover, further and more accurate simulations will be improved in the near future.

Angiogenesis, formation of new blood vessels, is a complex but critical phenomenon. In particular, it is regulated by different angiogenic factors. Nitric oxide (NO) is also a very well known biological mediator involved in vascular physiology. This study focuses on relationships between the effect of angiogenin, a major angiogenic factor, and extracellular NO release. NO concentration was sensed electrochemically using a fibronectin coated multiple microelectrode array. Angiogenin was shown to increase NO levels, thus triggering nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity. Angiogenin reactive pathway being very complex, we have used various selective inhibitors of angiogenin to investigate the mechanism leading to NO production. Neomycin, an antibiotic blocking nuclear translocation, inhibited angiogenin effect on NOS. This result demonstrates that angiogenin activates NOS by interacting with the cell nucleus. Present paper is dealt with the steady state, laminar and hydrodynamically and thermally developed flow in a trapezoidal channel under H2 boundary condition is investigated. Slip flow, temperature jump and viscous dissipation effects are considered. Firstly, Navier-Stokes equations are transformed from physical plane to square domain, and then solved using finite difference method. Also, it is possible to obtain fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics for a rectangular microchannel with this method. The effects of aspect ratio, rarefaction, base angle and viscous heating on Nusselt number are discussed. The results of the numerical method are verified with the conventional theory of macrochannels (i.e. Kn=0, Br=0). Also, the friction factors and the Nusselt numbers for Br=0, Kn≠0 are in a good agreement with the available results of flow and heat transfer of rectangular microchannels in the literature. The results showed that the increase in rarefaction reduces the Nusselt numbers in trapezoidal and rectangular microchannels. When the Kn number is fixed and the Br number is small, the microchannel with the higher aspect ratio has the greater Nu, but for higher Br numbers, the greater aspect ratio results in smaller Nu. Also, at the same rarefaction, when Br number is large, the difference between Nu number of different aspect ratios decreases.

In this work, we have investigated the generation and behaviour of self-organised droplet flow patterns in microchannels. The water droplets, which are generated at a T-junction where the carrier is oil, move into an expanded channel and are self reorganised into various flow patterns: single-profile, double-helix-profile, triple-helix-profile, and more. We find that increasing water/oil flow rate ratio and Capillary number lead to more densely packed droplet flow patterns. The channel geometry also plays an essential role where the 300-μm-deep expansion channel can form multiple layers of droplets while only single layer of droplets can be observed in the 200-μm-deep expansion channel.

The paper presents a numerical investigation of pulsatile blood flow in arterial vasculatures of a mouse retina using a Womersley model incorporating an appropriate outlet boundary impedance at the end of the terminal vessels of the arterial tree (pre-capillary arterioles). The mouse retinal flatmount was prepared for confocal microscopy and the morphometric information of the vasculature was obtained from the confocal images. The pulsatile analysis focused on one of the arterial trees in the retinal vasculature. We included the in vivo viscosity evaluated from the mathematical models of Fahraues-Lindquist effect and the plasma skimming effect in the microcirculation. Comparative investigations of the pulsatile circulation were carried out for cases of constant viscosity, in vivo viscosity, zero and non-zero outlet boundary impedance. In addition, the dependency of the oscillating input impedance at the inlet of the arterial trees on angular frequencies of the oscillation and vessel elasticises was also studied. The study shows the pulsatile blood flow prediction is largely influenced by the outlet boundary impedance. The oscillating input impedance at the inlet of the arterial tree is also found to be significantly dependent on the angular frequency and the Young modulus of the vessel segment.

This contribution deals with the pumping and deformation of oil in water droplets in alternating-current electro-osmotic micropumps. These micropumps are used to transport lowly conductive fluids through micro channels by means of a harmonically driven electrode array on the channel bottom. The periodic formation of an electric double layer above the electrodes results in an electro-osmotic flow, which carries along adjacent fluid layers. In experiments we observed that droplets immersed in the carrier fluid are transported by the channel flow and periodically deformed when passing the electrodes. Due to the different polarizability and conductivity of the droplet and the carrier fluid, dielectrophoretic forces act on the fluid droplet interface. These forces that are described by the Maxwell stress tensor increase with the electric field strength and attract the droplet towards the electrode. This contribution analyses the mechanisms of droplet pumping and deformation numerically by means of solving for the electric and the flow field to the two phases in the channel and by evaluating the dielectrophoretic forces on the droplet. A conservative level-set method is used to track the droplet surface accurately.

Syringomyelia is a disease in which high-pressure fluid-filled cavities, called syrinxes, form in the spinal cord (SC) which can cause progressive loss of sensory and motor functions. Poor treatment outcomes have led to myriad hypotheses for its pathogenesis, which unfortunately are often based on small numbers of patients due to the relative rarity of the disease. However, accumulating evidence in the last decade from animal studies implicates arterial pulsations in syrinx formation. In particular, it has been suggested that a phase difference between the pressure pulse in the spinal subarachnoid space and the perivascular spaces, due to a pathologically disturbed blood supply, could result in a net influx of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) into the SC. A lumped-parameter model is developed of the cerebrospinal system to investigate this conjecture. It is found that although this phase-lag mechanism may operate, it requires the SC to have an intrinsic storage capacity due to the collapsibility of the contained venous reservoir. If this storage requirement is met then the results presented here suggest that, on mechanical grounds, a syringo-subarachnoid shunt may be a better surgical treatment option than a subarachnoid bypass for posttraumatic syringomyelia.

The effect of inlet conditions on the frequency and size of the bubbles that form during gas-liquid Taylor flow in microchannels is investigated in this paper. Three different inlet configurations, T-, Y- and Mjunction as well as three test channels with hydraulic diameters 0.345mm, 0.577mm and 0.816mm were used. The test fluids were nitrogen and water or octane, that have different surface tension. It was found that bubble length increased with increasing gas flowrate, gas inlet size and liquid surface tension and decreasing liquid flowrate. From the different inlet configurations, the M-junction resulted in the largest bubbles and the Y-junction in the smallest ones particularly at low liquid flowrates. The experimental bubble sizes were tested against a number of literature correlations but the agreement was not very good. Two new correlations were developed for the T- and the Y-junctions to calculate the unit cell (one bubble and one slug) frequency from which the bubble length can be found. Bubble lengths predicted from these correlations were in good agreement with experimental ones obtained from video recordings.

A method for simulating fluid flows in microchannels is proposed. The method is tested using available experimental data obtained in micro-PIV studies of microchannel flows. Flow regimes in Y- and Ttype micromixers are studied. Passive and active mixers are considered. The dependence of the mixing efficiency on the Peclet number is examined, and the possibility of using hydrophobic and ultrahydrophobic coatings is analyzed. An active mixing method using a T-mixer with a harmonically varying flow rate at one of the inlet channels is studied. The dependence of the mixing efficiency on the frequency and amplitude of flow rate variation is determined. In this work we studied the functional differences between the microcirculation of murine tumours that only express single isoforms of vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF), VEGF120 and VEGF188, and the effect of VEGF receptor tyrosine kinase (VEGF-R TK) inhibition on their functional response to the vascular disrupting agent, combretastatin A-4 phosphate (CA-4-P). We used measurement of fluorescentlylabelled red blood cell (RBC) velocities in tumour microvessels to study this functional response. RBC velocity for control VEGF120-expressing tumours was over 50% slower than for control VEGF188-expressing tumours, which may be due to the immature and haemorrhagic vasculature of the VEGF120 tumour. After chronic treatment with a VEGF-R tyrosine kinase inhibitor, SU5416, RBC velocities in VEGF120 tumours were significantly increased compared to control VEGF120 tumours, and similar to velocities in both VEGF188 treatment groups. Control and SU5416 treated VEGF188 tumours were not different from each other. Treatment of VEGF120 tumours with SU5416 reduced their vascular response to CA-4-P to a similar level to the VEGF188 tumours. Differential expression of VEGF isoforms not only affected vascular function in untreated tumours but also impacted on response to a vascular disrupting drug, CA-4-P, alone and in combination with an anti-angiogenic approach involving VEGF-R TK inhibition. Analysis of RBC velocities is a useful tool in measuring functional responses to vascular targeted treatments. This study is funded by the Cancer Research UK.

In the present paper forced-boiling in microsystems is considered in the light of fundamentals of boiling heat transfer such as local temperature pulsations of heating surface (Moore and Mesler, 1961), pumping effect of growing bubble (PEGB)(Shekriladze, 1966), a model of “the theatre of director” (MTD) (Shekriladze and Ratiani, 1966) and multifactoring concept (MFC) (Shekriladze, 2006). An attempt is made to resolve a contradiction between accordance of heat transfer process to developed boiling heat transfer law in the major part of experiments and qualitatively differing trends in the other part of processes. The problem of interpretation of generation of strong reverse vapor flows, related cyclical oscillations and flow instabilities also is touched. According to presented analysis leading role in specific thermo-hydrodynamic characteristics of boiling microsystems is played by so-called duration-dependent multifactoring which, by its part, is linked to transition to prolonged action of microlayer evaporation (MLE) and PEGB. As a result drastically increases a number of influencing heat transfer factors extremely complicating description of the process. At the same time prolongation of intensive stage of acting of MLE and PEGB creates prerequisites for specific thermo-hydrodynamic appearances.

The breaking of left-right symmetry in the mammalian embryo is believed to occur in a transient embryonic structure, the node, when cilia create a leftward flow of liquid. It has been widely confirmed that this nodal flow is the first sign of left-right differentiation; however, the mechanism through which embryonic cilia produce their movement and how the leftward flow confers laterality are still requiring investigation. The ciliary motility in the embryonic node involves complex dynein activations and the handed information is transmitted to the cells by the flow produced by cilia, either mechanically and/or by advection of a chemical species. In this paper, we present a computational model of ciliary ultrastructure (protein-structure model) and discuss the scenarios that incorporate this internal microtubule-dynein system with the external fluidic environment (fluid-structure-protein interaction model, FSPI). By employing computational fluid dynamics, deformable mesh computational techniques and fluid-structure interaction analysis, and solving the three-dimensional unsteady transport equations, the protein-triggered mechanism of nodal ciliary motility has been studied, which is a primary component for the FSPI model. Future work regarding the integrative model is discussed, that will provide more accurate quantitative information on the flow rate, ciliary motion, and molecule/ particle transport in the embryonic node and support the plausibility of hypotheses regarding left-right information transmission.

Blood is a concentrated suspension of red blood cells (RBCs). Motion and deformation of RBCs can be analyzed based on knowledge of their mechanical characteristics. Models for single-file motion of RBCs in capillaries yield predictions of apparent viscosity in good agreement with experimental results for diameters up to about 8 μm. In living microvessels, flow resistance is also strongly influenced by the presence of a ~ 1-micron layer of macromolecules bound to the inner lining of vessel walls, the endothelial surface layer. Two-dimensional simulations, in which each RBC is represented as a set of interconnected viscoelastic elements, predict that off-center RBCs take asymmetric shapes and drift toward the center-line. Predicted trajectories agree closely with observations in microvessels of the rat mesentery. Realistic simulation of multiple interacting RBCs in microvessels remains as a major challenge for future work. This work was supported by NIH Grant HL034555.

This paper presents a review of multiscale simulation strategies for the modelling of micro- and nanoscale flows. These have been developed in the last two decades in an attempt to bridge the application gap between molecular and continuum simulation methods preventing the simulation of many micro- and nanofluidic devices. The paper is focused on hybrid molecular-continuum methods and reviews different coupling strategies, including geometrical decomposition in conjunction with state- and flux coupling, pointwise coupling, the heterogeneous multiscale method and the equation free approach. The different applications of these methods are briefly discussed.

The longterm aim in the design of modern evaporators is to find a heat transfer calculation method based on the phenomena of growing and departing vapour bubbles on the heated surface. New developments in computer calculation and in measurement technique support the local analysis of the heat transfer, bubble formation and the microstructure of the heated surface. All three kinds of data originate from the same equipment and from experiments performed with equal detail and precision. The influence of different rough and structured surfaces on the heat transfer coefficient will be investigated by a joint research project of Brunel and Hannover Universities with refrigerants boiling in single microchannels of different inner diameter. The microchannels are capillary tubes and they are manufactured by industrial processes. The samples of the microchannels have to be prepared by special methods, because the surfaces inside the microchannels cannot be measured in the same way as used for the heat transfer measurements. The microstructure of the surfaces of three microchannels (D = 0.4, 0.5 and 0.8mm) is measured by a contact stylus instrument. The paper will focus on the detailed description of the profiles and the topographies of the samples. The roughness parameter in accordance with standard practice are calculated for ca 1000 runs (profiles). The roughness parameters of the smaller microchannels are twofold higher than those of the largest microchannel investigated. The scattering of the roughness of the largest microchannel (D = 0.8 mm) is less and the cavities are smaller than those of the other ones (D = 0.4 and 0.5 mm). All surfaces investigated demonstrate a deterministic microstructure as for emery ground surfaces on smooth tubes in the literature.

The conference was organised by Brunel University and supported by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, IPEM, the Italian Union of Thermofluid dynamics, the Process Intensification Network, HEXAG - the Heat Exchange Action Group and the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications. This paper highlights examples of my current research in heat transfer and fluidics at the interface of energy applications and micro- and nanoscale technologies. It is not the scope of this paper to present an exhaustive account of all current and past activities related to its title. It is rather an account of current research in my laboratory in this area, containing both the underlying scientific challenges as well as the hoped final outcome in terms of applications. To this end, examples from the areas of energy conversion, as well as energy transport will be discussed. In the area of energy conversion an original, deformable, direct methanol microfuel cell will be presented made of lightweight, flexible, polymer-based materials. A basic understanding and control of two-phase flows (in this case methanol and carbon dioxide) in microchannels as well as novel materials processing and microfabrication methods are directly related to the performance of such energy conversion devices. In the area of energy conservation and reuse, examples from the information technology are employed. Specifically, new concepts of liquid (water) cooling of chips reaching heat removal rates in excess of 700 W/cm2 in domains with restricted heights of the order of one mm will be presented. One additional advantage of using water to cool high density electronics is energy reuse, due to the potentially much higher exergy content of the coolant compared to air cooled technologies. The last part of the paper focuses on the employment of functional nanostructures such as carbon nanotubes and nanowires of conductive and semiconductive materials for the efficient transport of electricity and heat and the need for the development of novel technologies for the manufacturing, characterization as well as handling of such nanostructures.

We report in this paper the evolution of a physically-based drop size-distribution coupling the Maximum Entropy Formalism and the Monte Carlo method to solve the distribution equation of a spray. The atomization is performed by a new Spray On Demand (SOD) device which exploits ultrasonic generation via a Faraday instability. The Modified Hamilton’s principle is used to describe the fluid structure/interaction with a vibrating micro-channel conveying fluid excited by a pointwise piezoactuator. We combine to the fluid/structure description a physically based approach for predicting the drop-size distribution within the framework of the Maximum Entropy Formalism (MEF) using conservation laws of energy and mass coupling with the three-parameter generalized Gamma distribution. The prediction and experimental validation of the drop size distribution of a new Spray On Demand print-head is performed. The dynamic model is shown to be sensitive to operating conditions, design parameter and physico-chemical properties of the fluid and its prediction capability is good. We also report on a model allowing the evolution of drop sizedistribution. Deriving the discrete and continuous population balance equation, the Mass Flow Algorithm is formulated taking into account interactions between droplets via coalescence. After proposing a kernel for coalescence, we solve the time dependent drop size distribution using a Monte Carlo Method which is shown to be convergent. The drops size distribution upon time shows the effect of spray droplets coalescence.

The paper reports results of numerical study on bubbles deformation, flow and coalescence under pseudo nucleate boiling conditions in horizontal mini-/micro- channels. The numerical simulation, which is based on the multiphase model of volume of fluid (VOF) method, aims to study the corresponding flow behaviours of nucleate bubbles generated from the tube walls in mini/micro channels so as to understand the effect of confined surfaces/walls on nucleate bubbles and heat transfer. Under the pseudo or quasi nucleate boiling condition, small superheated vapour bubbles are injected at the wall to ensure that the bubbles generation is under a similar condition of real nucleation. The numerical study examined the fluid mechanics of bubble motion with heat transfer, but the mass transfer across the bubble-liquid interface is not simulated in the present work. A theoretical model, developed by the authors, for condensation in microchannels takes account of the effects of gravity, streamwise shear stress on the condensate surface as well as the transverse pressure gradient due to surface tension in the presence of change in condensate surface curvature. Numerical results have been generated for various channel shapes, dimensions and inclinations and for various fluids, vapourto-surface temperature differences and vapour mass fluxes. It is found that, over a certain length of channel, the local mean (around the channel perimeter) heat-transfer coefficient is essentially independent of gravity (including inclination of the channel) and surface shear stress and depends only on surface tension. For the surface tension dominated regime an equation for the Nusselt number, as a function of a single dimensionless group analogous to that occurring in the simple Nusselt theory except that the gravity is replaced by surface tension, has been derived both on the basis of dimensional analysis and by approximate theory. The equation represents all of the data satisfactorily.

The current paper continues the analysis of a completely novel method of fluid manipulation technology in micro-fluidics systems, inspired by nature, namely by the mechanisms found in ciliates. In order to simulate the drag forces acting on an array of artificial cilia, we have developed a computer code that is based on fundamental solutions of Stokes flow in a semi-infinite domain. The actuation mechanism consists of a bi-directional rotating excitation magnetic field. The magnetization induced by the magnetic field was calculated in a separate routine based on the Integral Nonlinear Equations Approach with 1D discretization of wire (cilium). Time averaged x-coordinate mass flow rates are computed for several cilium configurations resulting. The outcome and originality of this paper consist on assessing magnetic actuation as a practical tool for obtaining a consistent one-directional fluid flow. By allowing the surface charge of one surface to affect the adsorption equilibrium of the other, we establish the existence of a long-range attractive interaction between two identical surfaces in an electrolyte containing polyvalent counter ions with a mean-field Poisson-Boltzmann approach. A Stern electrostatic condition from linearization of the mass-action adsorption isotherm is used to capture how polyvalent ion condensation affects and reverses the surface charge. We furthermore establish a direct mapping between this Stern layer conditions and previously derived modified Mean-field formulations associated with correlated fluctuations theory. For a sufficiently potential-sensitive isotherm, antisymmetric charge inversion can occur to produce an attractive force that increases with decreasing ionic strengths. Analyses of a mass-action isotherm produce force-separation relations, including an exponential far-field force decay distinct but consistent with previously proposed correlated fluctuation theories, and in quantitative agreement with experimental data.

Residence time distributions (RTDs) have been investigated experimentally for systems with straight and zig-zag channels. The channels are formed by microstructured plates placed on top of each other and containing obstacles and holes to allow flow in 3 dimensions. Experimental RTD measurements were performed by monitoring the concentration of a tracer dye by means of a LED-photodiode system. The RTD was obtained for five different flowrates for both geometries. It was found that the zig-zag channel configuration gives a narrower distribution as compared to the straight channel one. Furthermore, as the flowrate increased the standard deviation of the distribution increased.

We review some recent developments in the modelling of non-equilibrium (rarefied) gas flows at the micro- and nano-scale using extended hydrodynamic models. Following a brief exposition of the challenges that non-equilibrium poses in micro- and nano-scale gas flows, we outline the field of extended hydrodynamics, describing the effective abandonment of Burnett-type models in favour of high-order regularised moment equations. We then review the boundary conditions required if the conventional Navier-Stokes-Fourier (NSF) fluid dynamic model is applied at the micro scale, describing how 2nd-order Maxwelltype conditions can be used to compensate for some of the non-equilibrium flow behaviour near solid surfaces. While extended hydrodynamics is not yet widely-used for real flow problems because of its inherent complexity, we finish with an outline of recent ‘phenomenological extended hydrodynamics’ (PEH) techniques — essentially the NSF equations scaled to incorporate non-equilibrium behaviour close to solid surfaces — which offer promise as engineering models. This article addresses the qualitative and quantitative properties of solute transport and dispersion in microchannel of finite-length. As the Peclet number increases a transition from the Taylor-Aris to a new regime referred as convection dominated dispersion occurs, which is controlled by the velocity profile near the stagnation points at the solid walls. The properties characterizing dispersion dominated regime can be used for analytical purposes as a chromatographic-based velocimetry and for determining the eventual occurrence of slip at the solid walls of microchannels.

This paper examines the dynamics of shock induced collapse of an air bubble in water and discusses the resulting collapse geometry, pressure and temperature. FronTier, a front tracking algorithm, is used to resolve the motion of the air/water interface. A series of plane shock intensities and bubble sizes are compared and the collapse geometry is found to be independent of these variations. The pressure and temperature are found to be greater for a smaller bubble and for a more intense shock. High speed droplet impact with an enclosed bubble is also examined. The impact creates a shock wave that is found to interact with the bubble in a way largely similar to the plane shock case.

Microfluidic techniques are employed to investigate air-liquid flows in the pulmonary airway tree. A network of microchannels with five generations is made and used as a simplified model of the pulmonary airway tree. Liquid plugs are injected into the network and pushed by air flow to divide at every bifurcation before reaching the exits. The resistance associated with the presence of one plug in a given generation is defined to establish a linear relation between the driving pressure and the total flow rate in the network. Based on this resistance, we have good predictions of the flow of two successive plugs in the network. For two-plug flows under the same driving pressure, the total flow rate depends not only on the lengths of the plugs but also the initial distance between the two. Strong long range interactions are found between daughter plugs, especially when they are flowing through the bifurcations. We also observe different flow patterns under different pushing conditions. Under a constant pressure forcing, the flow develops symmetrically while a constant flow rate push achieves an asymmetric flow. Heat transfer in fluid flows traditionally is examined in terms of temperature field and heat-transfer coefficients. However, heat transfer may alternatively be considered as the transport of thermal energy by the total convective-conductive heat flux in a way analogous to the transport of fluid by the flow field. The paths followed by the total heat flux are the thermal counterpart to fluid trajectories and facilitate heat-transfer visualisation in a similar manner as flow visualisation. This has great potential for applications in which insight into the heat fluxes throughout the entire configuration is essential (e.g. cooling systems, heat exchangers). To date this concept has been restricted to 2D steady flows. The present study proposes its generalisation to 3D unsteady flows by representing heat transfer as the 3D unsteady motion of a virtual fluid subject to continuity. The heat transfer visualisation is provided with a physical framework and demonstrated by way of representative examples. Furthermore, a fundamental analogy between fluid motion and heat transfer is addressed that may pave the way to future heat-transfer studies by well-established geometrical methods from laminar-mixing studies.

Compact and micro-heat exchangers have many advantages over their larger counterparts, particularly when used to handle clean fluid streams, either single- or two-phase. Probably the most exciting feature of such heat exchangers is their ability to operate with close approach temperatures, leading to high effectiveness. This can be particularly beneficial when the exchangers are used in power-producing or power-consuming systems, where the improved heat exchanger effectiveness can be immediately realised in higher power outputs or reduced power consumption. In the case of heat pumping equipment – the most common examples being air-water or air-air vapour compression cycle heat pumps for domestic heating – this manifests itself in an increased Coefficient of Performance (COP) that reduces CO2 emissions due to a lower energy input needed to drive the compressor. This paper discusses some of the work carried out in five countries, Austria, Japan, Sweden, USA and the UK, within the IEA Heat Pump Implementing Agreement Annex 33 to identify the heat exchangers that can most benefit heat pump cycles, with a strong emphasis on micro-channel heat transfer. It also presents data on other research relevant to the subject, with an emphasis on the ‘micro’ size range.

In this paper, a lattice Boltzmann method used in the simulation of the fluid flow in micro/nano scale is introduced and studied. The method can be employed instead of NS equations in cases where the continuum assumption is no longer valid. In the present study the aim is to investigate the effects of surface roughness on flow characteristics of micro/nano gas flows. In order to compare the final results, two flow geometries were chosen for which the numerical and experimental results were available. Surface roughness was increased in each stage (from completely smooth to 12% roughness) and its influences on the flow regime, pressure and velocity distribution, slip velocity and mass flow rate were studied. It is shown that surface roughness results in a decrease in the mass flow rate as well as slip velocity. Increasing the amount of roughness causes the mass flow rate to continually decrease, however this trend is inverted for the slip velocity.

Recent literature indicates that under certain conditions the heat transfer coefficient during flow boiling in microchannels is quite similar to that under pool boiling conditions. This is rather unexpected as microchannels are believed to provide significant heat transfer enhancement under single-phase as well as flow boiling conditions. This paper explores the underlying heat transfer mechanisms and illustrates the similarities and differences between the two processes. Formation of elongated bubbles and their passage over the microchannel walls have similarities to the bubble ebullition cycle in pool boiling. During the passage of elongated bubbles, the longer duration between two successive liquid slugs leads to wall dryout and a critical heat flux that may be lower than that under pool boiling conditions. A clear understanding of the similarities and differences will help in overcoming some of these limiting factors and in developing strategies for enhancing heat transfer during flow boiling in microchannels.

This work investigates the frictional and heat transfer behaviour of laminar, fully-developed flow in microchannels with trapezoidal and rectangular cross-section and rounded corners under H1 boundary conditions. The equations of momentum and energy are solved numerically, and the results validated with analytical data, when available. The runs have been carried out for different aspect ratios and nondimensional radii of curvature Rc, with either all sides or three sides heated, one short side adiabatic for rectangular geometries and three sides heated, the longest one adiabatic for trapezoidal geometries. The Poiseuille and Nusselt numbers are reported and show, for the rectangular cross-section heated on all sides, a maximum increase for the highest value of the aspect ratio (β=1) with increments in the Poiseuille and Nusselt numbers of about 11% and 16% respectively for values of Rc * of 0.5, increasing as the geometry approaches the circular duct (12.5% and 21%). The increase is less pronounced as β decreases and also when only three sides are heated (maximum increase of Nu around 10%); in the case of the trapezoidal geometry the effects of rounding the corners are almost negligible (a maximum increase in Nu of around 2%).

We discuss, from the perspective of basic science, the physical and biological processes which underlie atherosclerotic (plaque) initiation at the vascular endothelium, identifying their widely separated spatial and temporal scales which participate. We draw on current, related models of vessel wall evolution, paying particular attention to the role of flow, and proceed to propose, then validate (in practical, qualitative terms, at least) a multiply coupled, multi-scale modeling strategy, which, eventually, aims at a quantitative, patient-specific understanding of the coupling between the flow and the endothelial state.

Blood separation is a strategic preliminary step in preparation to on-chip biological analysis. Two microfluidic devices for on-chip blood separation are presented. Both devices will be integrated to form the separation module of a Lab on Chip for non-invasive prenatal diagnosis. In the first device, a blood plasma separator, the separation of blood cells from plasma is made possible in microchannels by bio-physical effects such as an axial migration effect and Zweifach-Fung bifurcation law. Behaviour of mussel and human blood suspensions were studied alongside the effect of different geometries. The second device aims to separate fetal nucleated red blood cells based on their magnetic susceptibility. Biocompatible materials are used in the manufacturing of both devices. The present paper describes an experimental setup for the investigation of two-phase heat transfer inside microchannels and reports local heat transfer coefficients measured during flow boiling of HFC-245fa in a 0.96 mm diameter single circular channel. The test runs have been performed during vapourization at around 1.85 bar, corresponding to 31 oC saturation temperature. As a peculiar characteristic of the present technique, the heat transfer coefficient is not measured by imposing the heat flux; instead, the boiling process is governedby controlling the inlet temperature of the heating secondary fluid. In the data, mass velocity ranges between 200 and 400 kg/m2s, with heat flux ranging between 5 and 85 kW/m2 and vapor quality from 0.05 up to 0.8. Since these data are not measured at uniform heat flux conditions, a proper analysis is performed to enlighten the influence of the different parameters and to compare the present data to those increasing the water-to-refrigerant temperature difference and by decreasing it. Finally, the experimental data are compared to models available in the literature for prediction of the heat transfer coefficients inside microchannels.

We present methodological innovations to the multi-component lattice Boltzmann equation simulation method which allow for the simulation of dynamic contact lines in the continuum approximation. The improvements are set-out and verified by quantitative results. They allow the simulator access to an expanded range of simulation parameters like viscosity, viscosity contrast and interfacial tensions, and to obtain data with low levels of interfacial micro-current activity in the region of the dynamic contact line.

Cross-stream migration of macromolecules transported in a fluid flow is typically encountered in microfluidic applications. This experimentally observed phenomenon leads to a decrease of the nearwall macromolecule concentration which can be detrimental in applications relying on a high intensity of polymer reactions in the near-wall zone, such as DNA-based bio-sensors. Despite a significant body of experimental, theoretical and numerical research, there is no consensus regarding the nature of this phenomenon. In this paper a meta-modelling approach for macromolecule motion in the flow is presented. It is demonstrated that the hydrodynamic interaction resulting from the incorporation of Saffman lift force, together with Faxen correction to Stokes drag causes migration of DNA molecules towards the middle of a pressure driven micro-flow, which is in agreement with experimental observations. The results suggest that the migration can occur due to macromolecule-flow rather than macromolecule-wall interaction. One of the fundamental difficulties in micro- and nano-flow simulations is that the validity’s of the continuum assumption and the hydro-dynamic equations start to become questionable in this flow regime. The lower-level kinetic/molecular alternatives are often either prohibitively expensive for practical purposes or poorly justified from a fundamental perspective. The lattice Boltzmann (LB) method, which originated from a simplistic Boolean kinetic model, is recently shown to converge asymptotically to the continuum Boltzmann-BGK equation and therefore offers a theoretically sound and computationally effective approach for micro- and nano-flow simulations. In addition, its kinetic nature allows certain microscopic physics to be modeled at the macroscopic level, leading to a highly efficient model for multiphase flows with phase transitions. With the inherent computational advantages of a lattice model, e.g., the algorithm simplicity and parallelizability, the ease of handling complex geometry and so on, the LB method has found many applications in various areas of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and matured to the extend of commercial applications. In this talk, I shall give an introduction to the LB method with the emphasis given to the theoretical justifications for its applications in micro- and nano-flow simulations. Some recent examples will also be reported.

Many flows at microscale and below are characterised by an inherent multiscale nature and accurate numerical modelling of the phenomena involved is the cornerstone for enhancing the applicability of micro and nanofluidics in the industrial environment. This paper presents a hybrid molecular-continuum strategy named as point wise coupling for studying complex micro- and nanoscale flows. In this strategy one performs continuum simulations and uses a molecular solver for computing flow properties. The hybrid methodology utilises a numerical procedure to minimise the cost of the computationally expensive molecular solver. Simulations have been carried out for a slip Poiseuille flow test case. The hybrid results are in good agreement with analytical solutions and pervious molecular simulations. The objective of the present paper is to provide an analytic expression for the first- and second-order velocity slip coefficients. Therefore, gas flow rates in microchannels have been rigorously evaluated in the near-continuum limit by means of a variational technique which applies to the integrodifferential form of the Boltzmann equation based on the true linearized collision operator. The diffuse-specular reflection condition of Maxwell’s type has been considered in order to take into account the influence of the accommodation coefficient on the slip parameters. The polynomial form of Knudsen number obtained for the Poiseuille mass flow rate and the values of the second order velocity slip coefficients found on the basis of our variational solution of the linearized Boltzmann equation for hardsphere molecules are analyzed in the frame of potential applications of classical continuum numerical tools (as lattice Boltzmann methods) in simulations of microscale flows.

We demonstrate a versatile microfluidic system for performing rapid, consecutive (bio)chemical reactions in continuous flow. Surface-functionalised magnetic microparticles are introduced into a chamber and pulled, via a magnet, across a series of laminar flow streams containing different reagents, thus performing multiple sequential reactions on the particles’ surface. Such a continuous flow method eliminates many of the inefficiencies associated with batch techniques, such as the time-consuming, laborious sequential reaction and washing steps, to yield a system that can perform analyses far more rapidly and with less reagent volume than conventional methods. This innovative device has been applied to a two-reaction step mouse IgG sandwich immunoassay and one- and two-reaction step DNA hybridisation assays, all of which were completed within one minute. These results pave the way for a multi-purpose microreactor that can perform a variety of analytical and synthetic processes. The performance of a layered herringbone microstructured channel is compared with the staggered herringbone micromixer (SHM) originally proposed by Stroock et al. (2002). The layered configuration uses a single set of herringbone structures for two adjacent channels. Mixing and residence time distributions (RTDs) are studied both theoretically, via computational fluid dynamics and particle tracking algorithms, and experimentally. Experimental RTD measurements were performed by monitoring the concentration of a tracer dye by means of a LED-photodiode system. The proposed layered design gives similar results in terms of mixing and RTD as the standard SHM and it outperforms the behaviour of a rectangular channel.

Accurate predictions of two-phase pressure drop in small to micro diameter passages are necessary for the design of compact and ultra-compact heat exchangers which find wide application in process and refrigeration industries and in cooling of electronics. A semi-mechanistic model of boiling two-phase pressure drop in the confined bubble regime is formulated, following the three-zone approach of Thome et al. (2004) for heat transfer. The total pressure drop is calculated by time-averaging the respective pressure drop values of single-phase liquid, elongated bubble with a thin liquid film and single-phase vapour. The model results were compared with experimental data collected for a wide range of diameter tubes (4.26, 2.88, 2.02, 1.1 and 0.52 mm) for R134a at 6 – 12 bar.
