IntroductionThe Raph is an invented musical instrument, work on early prototypes dates from 2008, and the project as a whole includes a patent (secured 2012) and successful PhD (completed 2015). This particular collection focuses upon the more ambitious composition, arranging and performance practice developed on the instrument subsequent to the completion of the much-improved prototype five during 2015. A range of new techniques have been explored and documented; from experimental work, integrating field recording and signal processing to the adaptation of traditional techniques from related instruments, evidenced in the ongoing development of an instrument specific notation system. As a man of science, I never felt the need for me to compose a song for religious celebrations like Christmas. But following numerous requests from fans, I finally agreed. However, I said to myself: if I am to write a Christmas song, it should be something different from what is typically out there. The world is in no short of Carol, and is certainly full of cheesy Christmas love songs. So, let���s not just do it, only to satisfy requests, or for the sake of having one in the repertoire. ���� With that in mind, I decided to create one in form of a ���message song��� to highlight ���humanity���. To emphasise on social values, charitable deeds, and kindness. A thinking tool to awaken the spirit of caring, giving and sharing, and to remind ourselves that all of us can bring about change for the betterment of humanity ��� all ��� year��� round. And of course, to make the project even more literal and musically stage worthy, I took inspiration from ���A Christmas Carol. In Prose. (1843)��� ��� by Charles Dickens. My new song, ���Christmas Shimmer���, is a socially conscious song ��� arranged in Musical Broadway style by Roxana Nicola, and performed by Soprano, Maria Mitich from Germany. danceroom Spectroscopy (dS) is an arts/science collaborative project exploring molecular dynamics, allowing users to interact with a scientifically-accurate molecular simulation through movement in real time. SPARC 2021 Poster No. 13Gender inequality in music has been well documented for decades. Academics have analysed lack of access to musical spaces for people identifying as women; the so called “boys’ club” excluding women from networking; and mechanisms in the documentation of the musical cannon focusing on male achievements. However, the current academic debate rarely uses a combined approach linking both numerical data with a theoretical sociological analysis, nor does recent study in the field use wide-ranging data sets. This study aims to contribute to the discussion of women in music by understanding gender stereotypes in music and explore how these occur in society. Through a mixed methodology approach, the study will count the number of women present in musical platforms such as Glastonbury Festival, Coachella Festival, Leeds and Reading Festival, Download Festival, Rolling Stone Magazine, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Air Guitar Championships, which will be examined through several theoretical lenses: genre and sociological analysis, Michel Foucault’s gaze theory, and feminist theory - including concepts of the “other” and the somatic norm. I argue that musical genre has replicated gender stereotypes performed in society, thus creating extreme gender inequality in music. Ultimately, the study displays a shocking deficit of female performers in major musical spaces of visibility from the 1970s to 2019, which does not dramatically improve over time, despite the proclaimed postfeminist advances in Anglophone societies. This research project establishes and investigates a vision of contemporary modal use through a creative practice founded upon bass performance and compositional method. Dorian was chosen as the vehicle for this project’s modal exploration. Questioning my own practice as a bassist and composer where mode has multiple Western historical and cultural significations, I am responding to McClary’s (2004) challenge to unpack mode via a strategic lens. In doing so the objective is to not only inform compositional and bass methodology and practice, but also to explore and extend the contemporary musician’s vista of Dorian in a contemporary Australian music context.

Molecular Music grew out of the danceroom Spectroscopy (dS) project, an arts/science collaborative project exploring molecular dynamics allowing users to interact with a scientifically-accurate molecular simulation through movement in real time. This research examines the development of intersubjectivity between improvising musicians. Drawing on Peirce’s (1935) semiotic theory of indexicality and Mead’s (1939) social behaviourist theory of emergence, this practice-based project engages a series of improvisation exercises that explore how an understanding of musical style informs the processes underlying the performance of spontaneously improvised music. A selection of recorded works are analysed subjectively through ethnographic accounts, providing a first-person insight into the processes of free improvised music as dynamically intersubjective.

This presentation considers the characteristics and challenges of male adolescent voice change (MAVC) and how teachers can mitigate these to ensure healthy vocal production in high-school students. The presentation also comments on NCEA Solo performance assessment practice, and compares it with a contemporary scientific understanding of MAVC, thus highlighting any discrepancies between known physical limitations experienced during MAVC, and the criterion being used (the manner in which it is being interpreted, and by whom) to assess vocal ability.
