Purpose: The aim of this study is to conduct a molecular characterization of Spirometra tapeworm from jungle cat (Felis chaus) in Guilan Province, north of Iran using DNA sequence analysis of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (Cox1) and 12S rDNA sequences. Methods: Morphological features of the adult tapeworm of Spirometra were evaluated using specific staining and light microscopy. The molecular characterization was performed using partial Cox1 and 12S rDNA regions. Genetic diversity was calculated and phylogenetic trees of the obtained sequences were constructed. Results: Morphological features were compatible with previous description of adult Spirometra erinaceieuropaei. The Cox1 sequence of the specimen showed 100% similarity with S. erinaceieuropaei sequences in GenBank from Korea, China and Iran. Also, the 12S rDNA sequence revealed 99.7% similarity with S. erinaceieuropaei isolates from China and Japan. Intra-species variation within isolates of S. erinaceieuropaei was 0–1.4% and 0–4.6% for Cox1 and 12S rDNA genes, respectively. Conclusion: This is the first report of molecular characterization of S. erinaceieuropaei in jungle cat, F. chaus in Iran. Jungle cat probably plays a major role as reservoir host in maintaining of this parasite in this area with favorable climate condition. Needs for further assessment on the role of appropriate hosts, especially intermediate/paratenic hosts as well as the potential risk of human infectivity with sparganosis is emphasized. Abstract Background Hydatigera (Cestoda: Taeniidae) is a recently resurrected genus with the description of a new species, Hydatigera kamiyai, a cryptic entity within the Hydatigera taeniaeformis species complex. Rodents are intermediate hosts and correct taxonomic identification of H. taeniaeformis sensu lato (s.l.) species is difficult without the use of molecular methods. The aim of this study was to identify and explore the genetic diversity of Hydatigera and other taeniid species. Methods Ten different small mammals species (856 individuals) (Rattus rattus, three Apodemus, three Arvicolinae and three Soricidae species) were examined from 2013 to 2023. Captured animals were visually examined for cysts and visible lesions. Two markers were used for amplification and sequencing: cox1 and 12S rDNA. Results Molecular analysis of cysts and visible lesions revealed four taeniid species: Hydatigera kamiyai, H. taeniaeformis sensu stricto (s.s.), Taenia martis and T. crassiceps. Hydatigera kamiyai was found in Apodemus flavicollis, A. agrarius, Microtus arvalis and Crocidrua leucodon, while H. taeniaeformis s.s. is registered in R. rattus. Hydatigera kamiyai cox1 sequences clustered with European populations and showed at least 25 nucleotid differences compared to Asian, African, Australian and one of our isolates of H. taeniaeformis s.s acquired from a rat, followed by large sequence distances (9.4% to 12.9%), indicating clear molecular distinction of two species. Conclusions This is one of the few mitochondrial gene-based studies performed after the description of cryptic entities within the Hydatigera taeniaeformis s.l. complex and represents a valuable contribution to understanding of genetic diversity, host suitability and geographic distribution of these tapeworm species. Also, our study provides an important basis of molecular data from this part of Europe for further studies. We emphasize the importance of additional studies of intermediate hosts, especially rats from Europe and Apodemus spp. and voles from Asia and Africa. Graphical abstract

Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Schiner) (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) is a common cause of traumatic myiasis in livestock in Mediterranean countries as well as in Central and Eastern Europe. The current study investigated the utility of external body genitalia and mitochondrial and ribosomal DNA characteristics for identifying this species. W. magnifica was successfully identified morphologically and molecularly based on partial sequences of three DNA fragments, mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (mtCOI), 12S ribosomal DNA (rDNA), and 16S rDNA. A BLAST search for samples containing 12S and 16S rDNA sequences yielded 100 hits, with just one from W. magnifica (accession number: KU578263.1). More W. magnifica sequences were discovered for the mtCOI, including Egyptian isolates of W. magnifica cytochrome oxidase subunit I sequence (accession numbers: MN241041 and MN241043). As a result, we believe that mtCOI performed the best in terms of species identification. Phylogenetic analysis of mtCOI, 12S rDNA and 16S rDNA showed that W. magnifica identified in the current study was most closely related to W. magnifica retrieved from GenBank. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Setaria spp. are vector-borne parasitic roundworms commonly found in the abdominal cavities of wild and domesticated ungulates globally. The objective of this study was to conduct a morphological and molecular analysis of Setaria tundra Issaitshikoff et Rajewskaya, 1928, collected from roe deer Capreolus capreolus Linnaeus in Lithuania. The morphological characteristics of S. tundra described and illustrated. The amplification of the 12S rRNA and 18S rRNA genes confirmed the presence of S. tundra. This is the first case report of S. tundra in roe deer in Lithuania.

Trichodectes pinguis, referred to commonly as the bear-biting louse, has been reported in several bear species. However, graphical (blurred or coarse) and genetic information on the louse is limited. In this study, we identified T. pinguis collected from Japanese black bears in the Aomori Prefecture, Japan. We confirmed 12S rDNA sequences derived from the collected T. pinguis and performed molecular phylogenetic analysis based on 12S rDNA. The analysis revealed the parasitic louse to be T. pinguis. Interestingly, the body size of T. pinguis found in this study was smaller than the previous recorded body size of them in Japan and Turkey. To better understand the biting louse infesting bears, morphometric and genetic information from other bear hosts needs to be accumulated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dirofilaria immitis is the causative agent of canine heartworm disease, a severe health problem in dogs, especially in coastal areas of tropical and subtropical regions of the world. We employed molecular methods to investigate the occurrence of canine infection by filarioids in five municipalities of Baixada Fluminense (Magé, Duque de Caxias, Guapimirim, Nova Iguaçu, and São João de Meriti), a non-endemic area of Rio de Janeiro State, Southeast Brazil. A total of 110 canine blood samples collected from 2017 to 2018 and positive for microfilariae at the modified Knott's test were screened by cPCR targeting DNA fragments of the 12S rDNA gene for filarial nematodes. Seventy-seven samples (70%) tested positive at the molecular analysis. Of these, 72 were identified as D. immitis and 5 (4.5%) as Acanthocheilonema reconditum. Dirofilaria repens was not detected in the studied municipalities of Baixada Fluminense. This is the first record of D. immitis and A. reconditum in the Baixada Fluminense region, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. The prevalence of D. immitis cases in the five municipalities suggests the establishment and maintenance of its enzootic cycle in the studied region, which indicate vulnerability to the occurrence of epidemic cycles and, possibly, human cases. Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is one of the most widespread zoonotic diseases, with considerable public health and economic importance. Camels play a significant role in transmission cycle of Echinococcus granulosus especially, in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The present study aimed to identify the genetic variation and haplotype distribution of camel isolates of E. granulosus sensu lato using all existing E. granulosus mitochondrial DNA data from camels in different parts of the world. Sequence data from 1,144 camel isolates of E. granulosus s.l. available in the NCBI GenBank including 57 camel hydatid cysts collected in central Iran were used to analyze the nature of genetic variation within the camel isolates of E. granulosus s.l. in MENA region. Fifty-seven camel isolates were also PCR-sequenced on mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene. Haplotype network analysis revealed seven different haplotypes clustered into four major groups. E. intermedius G6 was identified as the most commonly represented genotype in camels followed by G1. Mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene sequence analysis on 57 camel isolates identified three different genotypes, including E. intermedius/G6 (35/57, 61.4%), E. granulosus sensu stricto/G1-G3 (21/57, 36.8%) as well as one isolate identified as E. ortleppi/G5 (1/57, 1.8%). The number of base substitutions per site over 420 positions of partial 12S rRNA gene sequences were shown as 0.000 and 0.004 for E. intermedius (G6) corresponding to the Middle East and sub-Saharan isolates, respectively. Camel isolates of E. granulosus in the MENA region present moderate genetic diversity (Hd = 0.5540–0.6050). The Middle East isolates demonstrated a more diverse population than the North/sub-Saharan isolates, where six out of seven 12S rRNA haplotypes were identified in the former region. E. intermedius (G6 genotype) was shown to be the most common species in the world camel population. In conclusion, camels showed to be an important intermediate host species in the MENA region with different patterns of genetic variation between the Middle East and Africa.

Equine ocular setariasis arising mainly from ectopic infestation of Setaria digitata is a common vision impairing ophthalmic disease in India, and the identification of this filarial nematode is based solely on morphology. However, morphological characters alone are inadequate to detect and differentiate S. digitata from its congeners. The present communication reports the first phylogenetic characterization of equine S. digitata from India based on sequences derived from the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI), the mitochondrial small subunit ribosomal DNA (12S rDNA), and the nuclear internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2). Three isolates were characterized for each gene, and respective sequences were submitted to NCBI database (MN078131, MN078132, and MN095798). The sequences were also compared with the other related sequences available from PubMed around the globe, and phylogenetic analysis was carried out in conjunction with nucleotide homologies. There was no intraspecific variation among the Indian isolates. The phylogenetic analysis of S. digitata, inferred from these genes, showed that the isolate sequences obtained from different host species created a separate monophyletic clade within the genus Setaria with minor sequence variations revealing similar molecular characteristics of S. digitata isolates throughout the globe. In addition, the studied Indian isolates were found closer to Sri Lankan isolates. The S. digitata and S. labiatopapillosa appeared as sister species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Recently a new hard tick species, Ixodes ariadnae has been discovered, adding to the two known ixodid tick species (I. vespertilionis and I. simplex) of bats in Europe. Findings Scanning electron microscopic comparison of adult females of these species shows morphological differences concerning the palps, the scutum, the Haller’s organ, the coxae, as well as the arrangement and fine structure of setae. Molecular analysis of 10 geographically different isolates revealed 90-95% sequence homology in the 12S and 16S rDNA genes of bat tick species. Based on 12S rDNA sequences, genotypes of I. ariadnae clustered closest to I. simplex, whereas according to their 16S rDNA gene they were closest to I. vespertilionis. The subolesin gene of I. ariadnae had only 91% sequence homology with that of I. ricinus, and is the longest known among hard tick species. Conclusions The present study illustrates the morphology and clarifies the phylogenetic relationships of the three known bat tick species that occur in Europe. According to its subolesin gene I. ariadnae may have a long evolutionary history.

The genus Hyalomma includes some of the most medically and veterinarily important tick species in the world. To clarify and identify the current distribution of the species of Hyalomma, field studies were conducted in 65 localities in Turkey and five localities in Cyprus. Additionally, using mitochondrial 12S and 16S ribosomal DNA, specimens of Hyalomma from Turkey, H. excavatum from Cyprus, H. marginatum from Spain and Italy were evaluated together with the available sequences obtained from Genbank. Morphological and molecular analyses demonstrated the presence of four species in Turkey: H. marginatum, H. excavatum, H. aegyptium and H. asiaticum. Hyalomma marginatum is the dominant species in the Central and Northern parts of Turkey, whereas H. excavatum distributes mostly in the Southern parts. Hyalomma asiaticum is restricted to the Southeastern Anatolia. However, some sympatric regions were observed for these species. Phylogenetic trees obtained with Maximum Likelihood method demonstrated five clades. Data supported previous conclusions, but placed H. asiaticum, H. scupense, H. dromedarii and H. aegyptium in different clades with high bootstrap values. Specimens of H. anatolicum group and H. marginatum complex are sister groups. Pairwise distance analyses of these groups showed 2.8 and 3% differences for 12S rDNA and 16S rDNA, respectively. Therefore, additional analyses with the samples from different locations using different markers need to evaluate the exact status of the species of these groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The phylogenetic relationships within Naidinae (Annelida, Clitellata, Naididae) were investigated, using six molecular markers, both mitochondrial (12S rDNA, 16S rDNA, the COI gene) and nuclear (18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, the ITS region). Thirty-seven nominal species, representing 16 of the 22 genera recognized in the subfamily, were included, and the Nais communis/variabilis species complex was represented by six different morphotypes. Ten other species of Naididae were selected as outgroups. The data were analysed by Bayesian inference and Maximum Likelihood. The phylogeny corroborates monophyly of the Naidinae, and the separate status of the genus Pristina (Pristininae) and the Opistocystinae. Relationships within Naidinae are largely well supported, but in some parts unexpected: (1) A clade containing the largely tropical genera Dero and Branchiodrilus is sister to the rest of the subfamily, and together with a third tropical genus, Allonais , they form a basal paraphyly. All these genera show morphological adaptations to environmental hypoxia, leading to the conclusion that Naidinae originated in tropical freshwaters. (2) The genera Dero , Nais and Piguetiella are paraphyletic. (3) At least Branchiodrilus , Paranais , Chaetogaster , Nais , Stylaria appear to contain cryptic species. Morphological characters, especially those associated with chaetae, are to a great extent homoplastic within Naidinae, which certainly has contributed to the overall taxonomic confusion of this subfamily. Ticks of the Rhipicephalus sanguineus complex are known as the brown dog ticks. This complex groups at least 12 species of ticks that are distributed worldwide. On the American continents, R. sanguineus sensu stricto (s.s.), is distributed in temperate areas, while Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l.), also called "tropical lineage" is distributed in tropical regions. Previous analyses of brown dog ticks from Mexico have identified the so-called tropical lineage and the country generally has a climate more favorable for these ticks (> 20 o C in average). In addition, some pathogens thought to be transmitted by this lineage (such as Ehrlichia canis, and Rickettsia rickettsii) are prevalent in Mexico. Herein we aim to contribute to the study of brown dog ticks by providing morphological identification and molecular analysis of mt 12S rDNA and 16S rDNA sequences from ticks collected from 12 states in Mexico. To evaluate human risk for Chagas disease, we molecularly identified blood meal sources and prevalence of Trypanosoma cruzi infection among 49 Triatoma sanguisuga kissing bugs in Louisiana, USA. Humans accounted for the second most frequent blood source. Of the bugs that fed on humans, ≈40% were infected with T. cruzi, revealing transmission potential.

Rhabdias casiraghii n. sp. and R. kibiraensis n. sp. are described from Trioceros ellioti from Burundi and co-infection was observed in one of the host specimens. Distinctive characters between these species are, among others, the mouth and buccal capsule in front view, both of which are round in the former and laterally flattened in the latter species. Both species have a complete set of submedian head papillae (three in each submedian axis) as observed in the fourth stage larva of R. americanus from anurans. This primitive character opposes them to other species parasitic in Chamaeleonidae that have a single papilla per axis. The third species is the first described from the primitive chamaeleonid genus Brookesia; R. brygooi n. sp. from B. superciliaris from Madagascar can be distinguished from other Rhabdias in Chamaeleonidae by the small diameter of its mouth and buccal capsule. In this character, it resembles parasites from anurans. However, its infective larva has a rounded caudal extremity ornated with buds, as described in species of Rhabdias parasitic in Chamaeleonidae.

Partial cytochrome b and 12S rDNA mitochondrial DNA sequences of eight representatives of the Ramphastidae family were analyzed. We applied the linearized tree method to identify sequences evolving at similar rates and estimated the divergence times among some of the taxa analyzed. After excluding Ramphastos tucanus and Capito dayi from our data set, the remaining taxa presented a constant rate of DNA substitution, and branch lengths could be re-estimated with a clock constraint using the maximum likelihood method. Branch lengths were calibrated assuming that Galliformes and Piciformes split around 100 million years ago (mya). Our results indicate that Ramphastinae, and probably Capitoninae, diverged from other Piciformes in the Late Cretaceous (~82 mya), suggesting that Piciformes is another avian order that survived the mass extinction event occurred 65 mya at the Cretaceous/Tertiary (K/T) boundary. The divergence times estimated within the Ramphastinae genera cover the period from the Middle Eocene (around 47 mya) through the Late Miocene (9.5 mya). Our estimate of divergence time is coincidental with the split of the African and the South American continents and other intense geologic activities and modifications of the areas which correspond to the current Neotropics. These events might have influenced the diversification of Ramphastinae in South America.

Crenosoma vulpis is a metastrongyloid nematode primarily associated with respiratory tract infections of red foxes in North America and Europe. Sporadic cases have also been reported in domestic dogs. The present study aimed to provide morphological, molecular, and epidemiological data on the geographical distribution of this nematode throughout Italy. From 2012 to 2014, 12 of the 138 foxes examined, three dogs and one badger scored positive for C. vulpis. Forty adults were isolated from foxes and the badger, whereas first-stage larvae were detected in the three dogs. All specimens were morphologically identified as C. vulpis, and 28 nematodes were also molecularly characterized by sequencing mitochondrial (12S ribosomal DNA (rDNA)) and nuclear (18S rDNA) ribosomal genes. Four haplotypes were identified based on the 12S rDNA target gene, with the most representative (78.5 %) designated as haplotype I. No genetic variability was detected for the 18S rDNA gene. The molecular identification was consistent with the distinct separation of species-specific clades inferred by the phylogenetic analyses of both mitochondrial and ribosomal genes. Data herein reported indicates that C. vulpis has a wide distribution in foxes from southern Italy, and it also occurs in dogs from southern and northern regions of the country. Practitioners should consider the occurrence of this nematode in the differential diagnosis of canine respiratory disease, particularly in dogs living close to rural areas where foxes are present. A new species of Steinernema is described herein as S. bifurcatum n. sp. It is characterised by the presence of a male gubernaculum that is bifurcate at both proximal and distal ends, a key diagnostic feature. Steinernema bifurcatum n. sp. belongs to the bicornutum group by having two horn-like structures on the labial region of the infective juvenile (IJ). It can be recognised by IJ body diam. = 22 (20-24) /xm, pharynx = 114 (102-134) /xm, ratio a = 24 (22-25) and D% = 39.7 (33-47). The new species can be further recognised by the male characters of D% = 48 (42-58), and genital papillae = 23 (22 + 1) in number and, for the first generation female, excretory pore = 75.7 (60-108) /xm, pharynx = 174 (158-200) /xm and tail length = 43.2 (38-60) /xm. Steinernema bifurcatum n. sp. is distinguished from all other members of the bicornutum group by the presence of a gubernaculum which is bifurcated at both proximal and distal ends in first generation males. On the basis of genital papillae number (22+1) it is close to S. abbasi, S. ceratophorum and S. pakistanense, but can be distinguished by morphometries of IJ and adults. IJ of S. bifurcatum n. sp. can be differentiated from those of S. ceratophorum and S. pakistanense by the smaller body length of 460-590 /xm. Steinernema bifurcatum n. sp. differs from S. abbasi by morphological characters of IJ, male and female stages. The IJ can be distinguished by D% (33-47), body diam. (20-24) /xm, b value (3.8-5.6) and pharynx length (102-134) /xm. The second generation male differs by GS ratio (0.29-0.45) and the mucronate tail. The first generation female is distinguished by a protruding vulva and no postanal swelling. Analysis of ITS rDNA (824 bp), D2-D3 (880 bp) and mt DNA region (507 bp) sequences confirm that the studied nematode isolate represents a valid new species, the combination of molecular and morphological features indicating that it belongs to Clade IV, the bicornutum group. Background The 5' region of cytochrome oxidase I (COI) is the standard marker for DNA barcoding. However, COI has proved to be of limited use in identifying some species, and for some taxa, the coding sequence is not efficiently amplified by PCR. These deficiencies lead to uncertainty as to whether COI is the most suitable barcoding fragment for species identification of ticks. Methods In this study, we directly compared the relative effectiveness of COI, 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA), nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) and 12S rDNA for tick species identification. A total of 307 sequences from 84 specimens representing eight tick species were acquired by PCR. Besides the 1,834 published sequences of 189 tick species from GenBank and the Barcode of Life Database, 430 unpublished sequences representing 59 tick species were also successfully screened by Bayesian analyses. Thereafter, the performance of the four DNA markers to identify tick species was evaluated by identification success rates given by these markers using nearest neighbour (NN), BLASTn, liberal treebased or liberal tree-based (+threshold) methods. Results Genetic divergence analyses showed that the intra-specific divergence of each marker was much lower than the inter-specific divergence. Our results indicated that the rates of correct sequence identification for all four markers (COI, 16S rDNA, ITS2, 12S rDNA) were very high (> 96%) when using the NN methodology. We also found that COI was not significantly better than the other markers in terms of its rate of correct sequence identification. Overall, BLASTn and NN methods produced higher rates of correct species identification than that produced by the liberal tree-based methods (+threshold or otherwise). Conclusions As the standard DNA barcode, COI should be the first choice for tick species identification, while 16S rDNA, ITS2, and 12S rDNA could be used when COI does not produce reliable results. Abstract: The objective of this study was to develop a species-specific PCR assay for authentication and traceability of Yellow Drum (Nibea albiflora) from surimi products using a primer pair design based on mt-DNA 12S rDNA sequences for amplification of 193 bp DNA fragments. The specificity of the PCR assay was broadly tested with DNA of eleven species of samples, such as Yellow Drum, Large Yellow Croaker, Hairtail, Silver carp, Grass Carp, Bighead carp, Eel, chicken, pork, corn starch and wheat starch, all of which were mainly used in surimi products in China. The results showed that positive amplification was only observed in N. albiflora. The detection limits of the PCR assay was found to be less than 0.5% in admixed fresh surimi products containing Yellow Drum and Large Yellow Croaker. Even in chewed and vomited samples, N. albiflora could also be authenticated and traced successfully. In conclusion, the developed assay was very specific and sensitive for rapid authentication and traceability of N. albiflora in deeply processed surimi products. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Trichodectes pinguis, referred to commonly as the bear-biting louse, has been reported in several bear species. However, graphical (blurred or coarse) and genetic information on the louse is limited. In this study, we identified T. pinguis collected from Japanese black bears in the Aomori Prefecture, Japan. We confirmed 12S rDNA sequences derived from the collected T. pinguis and performed molecular phylogenetic analysis based on 12S rDNA. The analysis revealed the parasitic louse to be T. pinguis. Interestingly, the body size of T. pinguis found in this study was smaller than the previous recorded body size of them in Japan and Turkey. To better understand the biting louse infesting bears, morphometric and genetic information from other bear hosts needs to be accumulated.

Abstract: A genetic analysis of partial sequences of the mitochondrial 16S and 12S rDNA genes of Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato collected in the Southern Cone of South America was carried out. Also, sequences of ticks belonging to this taxon from Europe, Africa and other South American localities were included. TCS networks constructed with 16S rDNA sequences showed two clusters of haplotypes, namely, Southern lineage (ST) and Northern lineage (NT). Haplotypes representing the specimens coming from localities of Argentina, Uruguay and Chile were included in the ST lineage, while haplotypes from Brazil, Paraguay, Colombia, South Africa, Mozambique and from two localities of Northern Argentina were grouped in the NT lineage. The phylogenetic trees obtained with both 16S and 12S sequences showed two distinct clades, one containing R. sanguineus s.l from Argentina, Uruguay, Chile (ST lineage) and Western Europe (Italy and France), and a second clade including R. sanguineus s.l from Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, Colombia (NT lineage), South Africa and Mozambique. The results herein reported revealed that the taxon R. sanguineus s.l is represented by two lineages in the Southern Cone of South America. According with the genetic comparative analysis, NT lineage and the ticks from Mozambique and South Africa represent a species that is not R. sanguineus s.s, while R. sanguineus s.l ticks from Western Europe and Southern South America (ST lineage) probably represent true R. sanguineus, because the type locality of R. sanguineus s.s is located in France. The taxonomic issue described for R. sanguineus s.l in the South America has epidemiological implications. Difference in the vectorial competence for Ehrlichia canis between the two lineages of R. sanguineus s.l was found in previous works. Four species of ophichthid leptocephali were identified using 12S rDNA sequences, and their morphological descriptions were first provided based on six individuals (S1–S3, M1, and E1–E2) collected from the East Sea and the Korea Strait between September 2008 and October 2010. Mitochondrial 12S rDNA 859–861 base pairs of ophichthid leptocephali were compared with those of 16 ophichthids adult and 2 outgroups (Anguilla japonica and Conger myriaster). Leptocephali of S1 and E1 were very closely clustered with adult of Scolecenchelys borealis (D=0.002) and Echelus uropterus (D=0.000), respectively. However, leptocephali of S2–S3 and M1 were slightly far clustered with leptocephalus of S1 (D=0.006) and adult of Muraenichthys gymnopterus (0.034), respectively. We believe that S1 and E1 are S. borealis and E. uropterus, respectively, in which the former is unrecorded species in Korea. However, S2–S3 and M1 may be undescribed species belonging to genus Scolecenchelys and Muraenichthys, respectively, because total numbers of myomeres for S2–S3 (148–158) and M1 (151) were not consistent with total numbers of vertebrae or distribution for any adult of Scolecenchelys spp. and Muraenichthys spp. in the world. Aim Phylogeographical patterns of marine organisms in the north-western Pacific are shaped by the interaction of past sea-level fluctuations during glacial maxima and present-day gene flow. This study examines whether observed population differentiation in the barnacle Chthamalus challengeri, which is endemic to the north-western Pacific, can be explained by the interactions between historical glacial events and patterns of contemporary gene flow. Location Eleven locations in the north-western Pacific. Methods Partial sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I ( COI), 12S, 16S and nuclear internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) were obtained from 312 individuals. Parsimony haplotype networks and analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) were used to determine whether the observed genetic structure corresponds to marine provinces (Kuroshio Current and China Sea Coastal Provinces), zoogeographical zones (oriental and Japan warm-temperate zones) and/or potential refugial areas (Sea of Japan and East China Sea) in the north-western Pacific. Neutrality tests, mismatch distribution analysis and Bayesian skyline plots were used to infer the demographic history of C. challengeri. Results In total, 312, 117, 182 and 250 sequences were obtained for COI, 12S, 16S and ITS1, respectively. A panmictic population was revealed, which did not conform to the 'isolation by distance' model. None of the a priori population groupings based on marine provinces, zoogeographical zones or potential refugial areas was associated with observed genetic patterns. Significant negative values from neutrality tests and the unimodal mismatch distribution and expansion patterns in Bayesian skyline plots for the COI and 16S data sets indicate a population expansion in the mid-Pleistocene ( c. 200 ka). Information from the fossil record suggests that there has been a northward range shift of this species from the East China Sea or the Palaeo-Pacific coast of Japan to the Sea of Japan since the mid-Pleistocene. Main conclusions Chthamalus challengeri has experienced a population expansion and range shift since the mid-Pleistocene. The observed lack of population differentiation can be explained by this past population expansion and present-day wide-scale larval dispersal (owing to the long planktonic larval duration) across marine provinces, which have led to the successful establishment of the species in different zoogeographical zones and habitats. Aim of this study is to analyze the genetic structure of long-crowing Denizli chicken, a Turkish local fowl, using nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial DNA 12S and D-loop regions. DNA isolation was carried out using feather samples of cocks of this local breed. D-loop and 12S regions were amplified using polymerase chain reaction technique and ca 1230 bp and 950 pb PCR products were obtained respectively. Native genotype Denizli fowl's D-loop and 12S regions were sequenced and sequencing data were analyzed and compared with the related published data. Nucleotide content of the 12S region showed a 32% A, 19% T, 19% G and 30% C, whilst AT and GC ratios were found as 59.88% and 40.12% respectively for D-loop region. D-loop sequence data analysis clearly identified the Denizli fowl within the clade of long-crowing cocks. Abstract: Earthworms play a key role in soil ecology as they can reach high densities, are well known as soil engineers, and occupy a central position in soil food-webs. The identification of earthworms, however, is notoriously difficult and morphologically only possible for well-preserved adult specimens. Molecular markers could facilitate earthworm identification and would be a huge advantage in studies where it is important to species-specifically identify juveniles or where badly preserved specimens and remains of earthworms need to be identified. The aim of this study was to compare four mitochondrial genes (12S rRNA, 16S rRNA, COI, and COII) with respect to their value for identifying earthworms, calculating earthworm phylogenies, and discovering cryptic species. Our results indicate that all four genes are suitable for species identification. However, the genetic distances were approximately twice as high for the protein coding genes than for RNA coding ones. High genetic distances and deep genetic lineages, e.g. for Octolasion lacteum, Lumbricus rubellus and Aporrectodea rosea, indicate the possible presence of cryptic species and hamper molecular identification. The Bayesian analysis based on concatenated sequence data resulted in a phylogenetic tree with high posterior probabilities. The con-specific relationship of Aporrectodea spp. and Allolobophora spp. was not confirmed, underlining the ongoing discussion about the revision of these two genera. In conclusion, our findings suggest using 12S and 16S rRNA sequences as molecular markers for species identification whereas the COI gene is better suited to address genetic lineages and to explore possible cryptic species. Taxonomy and the identification of species are essential for most ecological studies. This study provides the needed molecular sequence information to develop molecular tools that can overcome many hurdles in studies on earthworms, their relationship and their ecology. The tick Amblyomma parkeri Fonseca and Aragão was described in 1952, based on female and immature ticks collected in the states of São Paulo and Santa Catarina, Brazil. Thereafter, there has been no further report of A. parkeri, and the male has remained unknown. Herein, we examined ticks collected on porcupines from a locality in the state of São Paulo. Some of the ticks were identified as Amblyomma longirostre (Koch, 1844), whereas others as A. parkeri, including male specimens, for which we provide the first description. We also provide additional reports of A. parkeri after examining collections of A. longirostre and Amblyomma geayi Neumann, 1899 from different tick collections. Morphological evidence to support the original description of A. parkeri is presented, supported by molecular analyses of portions of the 16S rRNA and 12S rRNA mitochondrial genes. Abstract: In this paper, mtDNA gene cytochrome coxidase subunit I (COI) and small subunit ribosomal RNA (12S rDNA) were used to examine the phylogenetic position of Dirofilaria immitis from dogs and red pandas in the evolutionary tree of filarial. Different approaches, including minimal evolution (ME) and maximum parsimony (MP) from distance matrix and character state, were used to evaluate the evolutional relation between Dirofilaria spp. and other species included in the family Onchocercidae. Abstract: The Anaxyrus boreas species group currently comprises four species in western North America including the broadly distributed A. boreas, and three localized species, Anaxyrus nelsoni, Anaxyrus exsul and Anaxyrus canorus. Phylogenetic analyses of the mtDNA 12S rDNA, cytochrome oxidase I, control region, and restriction sites data, identified three major haplotype clades. The Northwest clade (NW) includes both subspecies of A. boreas and divergent minor clades in the middle Rocky Mountains, coastal, and central regions of the west and Pacific Northwest. The Southwest (SW) clade includes A. exsul, A. nelsoni, and minor clades in southern California. Anaxyrus canorus, previously identified as paraphyletic, has populations in both the NW and SW major clades. The Eastern major clade (E) includes three divergent lineages from southern Utah, the southern Rocky Mountains, and north of the Great Basin at the border of Utah and Nevada. These results identify new genetic variation in the eastern portion of the toad’s range and are consistent with previous regional studies from the west coast. Low levels of control region sequence divergence between major clades (2.2–4.7% uncorrected pair-wise distances) are consistent with Pleistocene divergence and suggest that the phylogeographic history of the group was heavily influenced by dynamic Pleistocene glacial and climatic changes, and especially pluvial changes, in western North America. Abstract: The Ixodes ricinus complex is composed of 14 species distributed worldwide. Some members of this complex are involved in the transmission of a number of diseases to animals and humans, in particular Lyme borreliosis, tick-borne encephalitis, ehrlichiosis and babesiosis. While the phylogenetic relationships between species of the I. ricinus complex have been investigated in the past, still little is known about the genetic structure within the species I. ricinus sensu stricto. We have investigated the intraspecific variability among 26 I. ricinus s.s. ticks collected in various European countries, including Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland by using five mitochondrial gene fragments corresponding to the control region, 12S rDNA, cytb, COI, and COII. The five genes considered here showed a low genetic variability (1.6–5%). Our results based on both statistical parsimony (applied to the COI+COII+cytb+12S+CR data set, for a total of 3423bp) and maximum parsimony (applied to the COI+COII+cytb+12S data set, for a total of 2980bp) did not provide any evidence for a correlation between the identified haplotypes and their geographic origin. Selection pressure by natural enemies on phytophagous insect larvae is intense and has frequently triggered the evolution of chemical defence as an effective counterstrategy. In the chrysomelid subfamily Galerucinae, glandular structures and defensive fluids have been described for the tribe Sermylini Wilcox, 1965. Previous morphological and ultrastructural studies raised doubts that these defensive devices in Sermylini can be traced back to a common origin. The taxonomy of the Galerucinae cannot clear these doubts because the phylogeny of this taxon is a matter of current debate. We therefore investigated the phylogeny of the Galerucinae based on approximately 1740 bp of the mitochondrial 12S and 16S rRNA and the nuclear elongation factor 1 alpha genes. Our data support the hypothesized close relationship between the subfamilies Galerucinae and Alticinae, yet, by contrast to other recent analyses, the two groups are mostly resolved as monophyletic sister groups or, in some analyses, with the Galerucinae nested paraphyletically within the Alticinae. Within the subfamily Galerucinae, only the tribe Galerucini formed a monophyletic taxon, except for one species, Cerochroa brachialis Stal, 1858. In none of our analyses were the Sermylini recovered as a monophyletic tribe. However, our data support monophyly of each of the three groups within the Sermylini that have morphologically distinguishable larval defensive openings. We conclude that the defensive structures in larvae of Sermylini have no common origin, but evolved independently. Abstract: Genus Merluccius is considered one of the most important groups within the Teleostei, and comprises 12 extant species distributed along the coasts of America, Europe and Africa, being its fisheries very important in these continents. Despite their noticeable economical importance for humans, to date the phylogeny of hakes has not been clearly established. In this study we used mitochondrial sequences (the ribosomal genes 12S rDNA and 16S rDNA, the coding gene cytochrome b and the control region) and the nuclear 5S rDNA conserved region in order to determine the phylogenetic and biogeographical relationships within the genus Merluccius. This is the first time that all the species of this genus recognized by the FAO are included in a phylogeny. Maximum Parsimony, Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian analyses of the mitochondrial sequences suggest that the geographical origin of the genus was the North Atlantic Ocean, and indicate that two main clades, early separated in the evolution, exist within the genus: one American (7 species) and one Euro-African (5 species). Among the American species, M. bilinearis seems to be the most ancient one, and the rise of the Panama Isthmus could act as a physical barrier leading to further processes of speciation. Within the Euro-African clade, successive events of geographical differentiation could explain the observed pattern of species distribution. Abstract: Partial sequences of three mitochondrial DNA genes, 12S rDNA, 16S rDNA and cytochrome b, and one nuclear gene, c-mos, were used to assess the phylogenetic relationships of species belonging to the genus Afroablepharus from the volcanic islands of the Gulf of Guinea (West Africa) and neighboring continental Africa. Additionally, partial sequences of cytochrome b were used to compare levels of sequence divergence within populations. The three forms from São Tomé, Príncipe and Annobon (one per island) are genetically distinct, with high levels of divergence, supporting the recognition of a distinct species in each island. Populations within each island contain very low levels of genetic diversity. These three forms form a monophyletic group suggesting a single initial colonization followed by radiation to the other islands, possibly from São Tomé to Príncipe and Annobon. This is contrary to what was found in other reptiles from these islands such as Mabuya (sensu lato) and Hemidactylus, which colonized the islands multiple times. Assuming a molecular clock for cytochrome b of about 2% divergence per million years (usually applied to Sauria), the lineage on Annobon island exceeds the age of the island, thus casting further doubt on this widely used divergence estimate. Partial sequences of c-mos showed no variation within islands. Based on their ecology, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus ticks from eastern and southern Africa have been divided into three groups. We investigated how two geographic genetically differentiated stocks of R. appendiculatus from the southern and the eastern provinces of Zambia, representing two ecological groups, i.e., southern African and transition groups, respectively, genetically compare to stocks from east Africa (Rwanda) and southern Africa (Zimbabwe and South Africa). The ITS2 and two mitochondrial genes segments, 12s rDNA and COI, were used in the investigations. The ITS2 tree did not show support for differentiation into any groups, while the two mitochondrial genes trees (12s rDNA and COI) showed two genetically differentiated groups: an east African genetic group which included specimens from Rwanda and the plateau area of the eastern province of Zambia, and a southern African genetic group represented by specimens from South Africa, Zimbabwe and specimens collected on the fringes of the eastern province plateau in the Nyimba district of Zambia. This suggests that the two geographically differentiated stocks of the southern and eastern provinces of Zambia might be part of two wider geographic genetically differentiated R. appendiculatus groups that extend beyond Zambia. Stocks of "transition" ecology (eastern province) belong to the east African genetic group and the differences in ecology within this genetic grouping may be due to genetic polymorphism, phenotypic plasticity, and other local factors. Abstract: The traditional phylogeny of the coral-inhabiting barnacles, the Pyrgomatidae, is based on morphological characteristics, mainly of the hard parts. It has been difficult to establish the phylogenetic relationships among Pyrgomatidae because of the apparent convergence of morphological characteristics, and due to the use of non-cladistic systematics, which emphasize ancestor-descendant relationships rather than sister-clade relationships. We used partial sequences of two mithochondrial genes, 12S rDNA and 16S rDNA, and a nuclear gene, 18S rDNA, to infer the molecular phylogeny of the pyrgomatids. Our phylogenetic results allowed us to reject previous classifications of Pyrgomatidae based on morphological characteristics. Our results also suggested the possibility of paraphyly of the Pyrgomatidae. The hydrocoral barnacle Wanella is not found on the same clade as the other pyrgomatids, but rather, with the free-living balanids. The basal position of Megatrema and Ceratoconcha is supported. The archeaobalanid Armatobalanus is grouped with Cantellius at the base of the Indo-Pacific pyrgomatines. Fusion of the shell plate and modification of the opercular valves are homoplasious features that occurred more than three times on different clades. The monophyly of the ”Savignium” group, comprising four nominal genera, is also not supported, and the different taxa are placed on different clades. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The aim of the present research is to determine the phylogenetic position of Setaria digitata of Sri Lanka in the evolutionary tree of filarial worms. DNA sequences of portions of the mitochondrial genes cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) and small subunit ribosomal RNA (12S rDNA) were analysed. Intra-specific variation was observed in CO1 but not in 12S rDNA. Phylogenetic trees inferred from these two genes resembled one another in recognizing monophyly of Setaria. The closely related species Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and R. zambeziensis co-occur in a wide area in Zambia. In this area, specimens of both species have been collected on the same individual host at the same time. In addition, specimens that are morphologically intermediate between R. appendiculatus and R. zambeziensis have been found in this area. These observations cast some doubt on the species status of R. appendiculatus and R. zambeziensis. Because the two taxa have varied influences on the epidemiology of East Coast fever (ECF), a cattle disease for which they act as vectors, it is essential that their taxonomic status is clarified and their identification is accurate. Therefore a phylogenetic analysis of nucleotide sequences of the ITS2 and a fragment of the mitochondrial 12S rDNA was performed to reassess the specific status of both taxa. This revealed two well supported clades coinciding with R. appendiculatus and R. zambeziensis as two separate species. In order to facilitate species identification a PCR-RFLP diagnostic assay was developed based on BauI digestion of the ITS2 gene. Abstract: Naidinae (former Naididae) is a group of small aquatic clitellate annelids, common worldwide. In this study, we evaluated the phylogenetic status of Naidinae, and examined the phylogenetic relationships within the group. Sequence data from two mitochondrial genes (12S rDNA and 16S rDNA), and one nuclear gene (18S rDNA), were used. Sequences were obtained from 27 naidine species, 24 species from the other tubificid subfamilies, and five outgroup taxa. New sequences (in all 108) as well as GenBank data were used. The data were analysed by parsimony and Bayesian inference. The tree topologies emanating from the different analyses are congruent to a great extent. Naidinae is not found to be monophyletic. The naidine genus Pristina appears to be a derived group within a clade consisting of several genera (Ainudrilus, Epirodrilus, Monopylephorus, and Rhyacodrilus) from another tubificid subfamily, Rhyacodrilinae. These results demonstrate the need for a taxonomic revision: either Ainudrilus, Epirodrilus, Monopylephorus, and Rhyacodrilus should be included within Naidinae, or Pristina should be excluded from this subfamily. The phylogenetic relationships of 27 north-eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean blennioids are analysed based on a total of 1001 bp from a combined fragment of the 12S and 16S mitochondrial rDNA. The most relevant results with implications in current blenniid taxonomy are: (1) Lipophrys pholis and Lipophrys (= Paralipophrys) trigloides are included in a well-supported clade that by the rule of precedence must be named Lipophrys; (2) the sister species of this clade are not the remaining species of the genus Lipophrys but instead a monotypic genus comprising Coryphoblennius galerita; (3) the smaller species of Lipophrys were recovered in another well-supported and independent clade, which we propose to be recognized as Microlipophrys; (4) although some authors included the genera Salaria and Lipophrys in a single group we have never recovered such a relationship. Instead, Salaria is more closely related to the genera Scartella and Parablennius; (5) the genus Parablennius, which was never recovered as a monophyletic clade, is very diverse and may include several distinct lineages; (6) the relative position of Aidablennius sphynx casts some doubts on the currently recognized relationships between the different blenniid tribes. Meristic, morphological, behavioural and ecological characters support our results and are also discussed. Abstract: The cophyline microhylid frogs of Madagascar show a wide range of habitat specialization, ranging from terrestrial/burrowing and semi-arboreal to entirely arboreal species. The classification of these frogs is thus far mainly based upon morphological, largely osteological, characters that might be homoplastic. Using 1173bp of DNA sequences from the mitochondrial 12S and 16S rRNA genes, we here present a molecular phylogeny for 28 species of all known genera, except for the genus Madecassophryne. The resulting maximum likelihood tree contained four major clades: one represented by the genus Anodonthyla, the second by Cophyla and Platypelis, the third by several terrestrial and semi-arboreal species of the genus Plethodontohyla, and the fourth by species of the genera Stumpffia, Plethodontohyla, and Rhombophryne. The results confirm that several cophyline lineages adapted independently to similar habitats, with multiple shifts among terrestriality and arboreality. The direction of these shifts cannot be ascertained due to unclarified relationships among the most basal lineages, but for one terrestrial species (Anodonthyla montana), it is most parsimonious to assume that it evolved from arboreal ancestors. Our results suggest that the genus Plethodontohyla is probably paraphyletic, and that the classification of this and of the genus Rhombophryne needs to be re-assessed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We sequenced mitochondrial (cytochrome b, 12S rRNA) and nuclear (IRBP, RAG1) genes for 17 species of the Old World murine genus Mus, drawn primarily from the Eurasian subgenus Mus. Phylogenetic analysis of the newly and previously available sequences support recognition of four subgenera within Mus (Mus, Coelomys, Nannomys, and Pyromys), with an unresolved basal polytomy. Our data further indicate that the subgenus Mus contains three distinct ‘species groups’: (1) a Mus booduga Species Group, also including Mus terricolor and Mus fragilicauda (probably also Mus famulus); (2) a Mus cervicolor Species Group, also including Mus caroli and Mus cookii; and (3) a Mus musculus Species Group, also including Mus macedonicus, Mus spicilegus, and Mus spretus. Species diversity in Eurasian Mus is probably explicable in terms of several phases of range expansion and vicariance, and by a propensity within the group to undergo biotope transitions. IRBP and RAG1 molecular clocks for Mus date the origin of subgenera to around 5–6 mya and the origin of Species Groups within subgenus Mus to around 2–3 mya. The temporal pattern of evolution among Eurasian Mus is more complex than that within the Eurasian temperate genus Apodemus. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This study presents a first circumpolar screening of the taxonomic and genetic diversity of the crustacean Lepidurus arcticus, belonging to the `living fossil' order Notostraca. Sequencing of a 484 bp segment of the mitochondrial 12S rDNA from 48 populations revealed two distinct haplogroups, each consisting of separate haplotypes. Alignment with published sequences of other species of Lepidurus clearly revealed that all of the studied populations were distinctly different from other species. Some major geographical patterns for distribution of haplogroups and haplotypes were identified, perhaps the most remarkable being the difference in distribution of haplogroups between the neighbouring Svalbard and Bear Island where a larger number of populations were studied. On the Norwegian mainland both haplogroups co-occurred in the same areas, however, and strong conclusions of the distributional pattern are yet premature. The distribution of similar haplotypes over wide geographical ranges suggests high dispersal abilities by Lepidurus. Morphological taxonomic criteria assign all surveyed populations to L. arcticus in spite of a pronounced morphological plasticity. Analysis of major morphological features such as length:width ratio of cephalothorax, the cephalothorax:abdominal length ratio, size of supra-anal plate and eye morphology revealed some distinctive population specific properties. The two major haplogroups differed significantly with regard to the relative size of the supra-anal plate, which also is a standard taxonomic criterion. This first genetic screening of a limited number of populations suggests that a subtler genetic diversity will be revealed when including more populations over a larger geographic area as well as a finer geographical resolution. Pectinidae is a large bivalve family characterised by almost circular, flat shells. Species are distributed worldwide and fall into three life-styles: swimming, byssally attached to hard substrates, and cemented to rocks with one valve. Despite these very different life strategies, pectinid shells are highly conservative in shape and offer few clues for the unravelling of phylogenetic issues. Consequently, phylogenetic studies based on morphological features have not yielded conclusive results. We thus set out to analyse partial sequences of mitochondrial 12S and 16S rRNA genes from 23 species of 16 genera with molecular techniques. The results are largely in contrast, both at the genus and the subfamily level, with the systematic classifications based on adult morphological characters, whereas they agree with the morphological classifications based on the more conserved non-adaptive features. Ticks of the Rhipicephalus sanguineus species complex may be vector of various pathogens including Rickettsia conorii (the etiological agent of the Mediterranean spotted fever) and Coxiella burnetii (cause of the Query (Q) fever). R. sanguineus ticks have been imported in several parts of central and northern Europe, especially in environments such as kennels and houses providing the appropriate microclimatic conditions and the blood source necessary for their survival. Since 1940 these ticks have occasionally been recorded in Switzerland. In Ticino (the southern part of Switzerland), they have been reported since 1980 and their probable establishment in this area has been suggested in the 90s. By means of PCR and direct sequencing, we tested the identity of these ticks (using 12S rDNA gene) and the occurrence of Rickettsia spp. (using 16S rDNA, gltA and OmpA genes) as well as Coxiella sp. (using 16S rDNA). The results indicated that in Ticino, two different tick species coexist, i.e. R. sanguineus sensu stricto and Rhipicephalus turanicus. A few individuals of R. sanguineus sensu stricto are infected with Rickettsia massiliae/Bar29, which are strains of unknown pathogenicity. Coxiella sp., an endosymbiont of Rhipicephalus ticks, has also been identified in both tick species. Due to climatic changes towards global warming, imported tick species may therefore adapt to new area and might be considered as epidemiological markers for a number of infectious agents transmitted by them. For several decades the relationships within the Branchiopoda (Anostraca + Phyllopoda) have been a matter of controversy. Interpretations of plesiomorphic or apomorphic character states are a difficult venture, in particular in the Phyllopoda. We explore the relationships within the Phyllopoda at the level of nucleotid comparisons of the two genes 12S rDNA (mitochondrial) and EF1α (nuclear), and at a higher molecular level based on introns found in the gene EF1α. Within the Phyllopoda our explorations show further evidence for a non-monophyletic Conchostraca (Spinicaudata + Cyclestherida + Laevicaudata). The monotypic Cyclestherida is more closely related to the Cladocera, both together forming the Cladoceromorpha. The Spinicaudata (Leptestheriidae, Limnadiidae, and Cyzicidae) is well supported. Spinicaudata and Cladoceromorpha form a monophylum. The position of the Laevicaudata remains unclear but we find neither support for a sister group relationship to the Spinicaudata nor for a close relationship of Laevicaudata and Cladocera. Within the Cladocera, we favour the Gymnomera concept with the monotypic Haplopoda being the sister group to the monophyletic Onychopoda. The Ctenopoda seems to be the sister group to the Gymnomera, which contradicts the common view of a more basal position of the Ctenopoda. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A karyological study and the analysis of two mitochondrial genes were conducted in several species of cordyliformes from Madagascar. Both studies confirmed the monophyly of cordyliformes. The karyological conservatism and small genetic distance among mitochondrial genes observed in these species are in line with the hypothesis that all cordyliformes should be included in a single family. The two studies yielded contrasting results with regard to the relationships between the Malagasy species and the Cordylidae and Gerrhosauridae. Nonetheless, the consistency between the data from mitochondrial gene analysis and those of taxonomic studies based on morphological characters is more in favor of an affinity between Malagasy Zonosaurinae and Gerrhosauridae and suggests that the karyological similarities between the former and the Cordylidae may be due to plesiomorphy.
