Abstract

Quantitative analysis of Nd, U, or Pd in 3 mol dm[−3] (M) HNO3 was performed by reflection absorption spectrophotometry at ultraviolet–visible–near-infrared (UV/Vis/NIR) region. A sample chamber with optics for reflection measurement was designed and attached to a UV/Vis/NIR spectrophotometer by optical fibers. The reflection absorbance showed linear relations with concentrations of Nd, U, and Pd at the absorbance region less than 0.1. The quantitative analysis was found to be possible for 3 M HNO3 solutions containing [Nd] ~0.2 M, [U] ~0.04 M, or [Pd] ~0.01 M.

2. Ab initio calculation of the zn isotope effect in phosphates, citrates, and malates and applications to plants and soil.

Abstract

Stable Zn isotopes are fractionated in roots and leaves of plants. Analyses demonstrate that the heavy Zn isotopes are enriched in the root system of plants with respect to shoots and leaves as well as the host soil, but the fractionation mechanisms remain unclear. Here we show that the origin of this isotope fractionation is due to a chemical isotope effect upon complexation by Zn malates and citrates in the aerial parts and by phosphates in the roots. We calculated the Zn isotope effect in aqueous citrates, malates, and phosphates by ab initio methods. For pH<5, the Zn isotopic compositions of the various parts of the plants are expected to be similar to those of groundwater. In the neutral to alkaline region, the calculations correctly predict that (66)Zn is enriched over (64)Zn in roots, which concentrate phosphates, with respect to leaves, which concentrate malates and citrates, by about one permil. It is proposed that Zn isotope fractionation represents a useful tracer of Zn availability and mobility in soils.

Abstract

Distribution behavior of Ce(III), Am(III), and Cm(III) between tri-n-butyl phosphate solution and molten calcium nitrate hydrate Ca(NO3)2·RH2O or molten calcium chloride hydrate CaCl2·RH2O was studied radiochemically. In Ca(NO3)2·RH2O systems, maximum separation factors of Ce and Cm to Am were observed to be 12 (Ce/Am) and 1.7 (Cm/Am). The distribution ratios of these elements increased with the decrease of water activity in the hydrates, and the extractabilities at the water deficient region was less sensitive compared to those at the water abundant region. This trend was similar to the coordination circumstance change observed in electronic absorption spectra of Nd(III) in the hydrates.

6. Nuclear field shift effect in the isotope exchange reaction of cadmium using a crown ether

Abstract

Cadmium isotopes were fractionated by the liquid–liquid extraction technique with a crown ether, dicyclohexano-18-crown-6. The isotopic ratios of mCd/111Cd (m: 110, 112, 113, 114, and 116) were measured precisely by the multi-collector inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). When the isotope enrichment factors were calculated, the odd atomic mass isotopes (111Cd and 113Cd) showed excesses of enrichment comparing to the even atomic mass isotopes (110Cd, 112Cd, 114Cd and 116Cd). This odd–even staggering property originates from the nuclear field shift effect. The contribution of the nuclear field shift effect to the observed isotope enrichment factor was estimated to be 5 to 30%.

Abstract

We measured the environmental radioactivity and isotope ratio, (87)Sr/(86)Sr ratio, (234)U/(238)U, delta(13)C, and (228)Ra/(226)Ra activity ratio, of adhesion that adhered to a wooden tubing vessel obtained from the Matsusaki site, one of the salt-production sites where Moshio is manufactured, in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The environmental radioactivity and isotope ratio verified that the adhesion originated from the seaweed and/or sea grass.
