Precipitation chemistry is influenced by a number of complex processes, which include the temporal and spatial evolution of air masses. Previous wet deposition studies in South Africa could not distinctly relate the influence of air mass history on rain chemistry in order to substantiate the influence of different sources. The Welgegund atmospheric monitoring station in South Africa measures several atmospheric parameters, which include vertical profiling of the atmosphere that could assist in relating rain chemistry to air mass history. Therefore, the aim of this study was to conduct an advanced assessment on factors influencing chemical composition of rain in the South African interior by relating individual rain events at Welgegund to air mass history at cloud base height (CBH) and arrival heights below clouds, as well as supplementary in situ measurements conducted at the site. Hierarchical cluster analysis was performed through two approaches, i.e. clustering based on the chemical composition of rain, as well as grouping based on air masses arriving at CBH and 100 m above ground level (a.g. l.). Although statistical analyses highlighted the complexity associated with correlating rain chemistry to sources of chemical species, it proved useful to determine some correlations between rain chemistry and air mass history. Clustering according to the chemical composition of rain events grouped rain events from high to low volume weighted mean (VWM) concentrations. Correlation of air mass histories to these clusters indicated that higher VWM concentrations were associated with air masses at 100 m a.g.l. passing over anthropogenic source regions. Air mass history clustering grouped air masses passing predominantly over predefined source regions. The rain chemistry of clusters determined for air masses at 100 m a.g.l. arrival heights could be related to the influence of different source regions, with the impact of large point sources, the clean western background region

Atmospheric aerosols have a significant effect on earth's radiative budget, particularly on regional scales. This paper presents a ~6 year, in situ, ground level aerosol scattering and absorption dataset, measured at a background site strategically positioned to enable differentiation of the effect of anthropogenic, population density and open biomass burning activities on a regional scale. Relatively well-defined seasonal and diurnal patterns were observed for all the aerosol optical properties, i.e. scattering coefficient (σSP), absorption coefficient (σAP), single scattering albedo (ω0) and Ångström exponent of scattering (αSP). These patterns were explained by considering southern African specific sources and metrological conditions. Using a receptor modelling method (auto-generated source maps) it was found that air masses that had higher σSP, σAP and ω0, and lower αSP, if compared with the relatively clean background, passed over source regions with significant industrial or other anthropogenic activities, higher population density, re-circulation of polluted air masses and higher open biomass burning frequency. To quantify differences, four source regions were defined, i.e. Karoo, Kalahari, anti-cyclonic recirculation pattern and the industrial hub of South Africa. Air masses that had passed over the Karoo source region represented the cleanest regional background conditions, while air masses that had passed either over the industrial hub and/or the anti-cyclonic recirculation pattern represented the most significant anthropogenically impacted, as indicated by the aerosol optical properties. The ω0 medians of air masses that had passed over the Karoo (0.80–0.86) were 9, 12 and 7% lower than in air masses that had passed over source regions with the highest ω0 median, in the warmest/wettest, coldest, and driest, peak open biomass burning periods, respectively

Open biomass burning is one of the largest sources of aerosols and reactive trace gases into the atmosphere, having a significant effect on earth's radiative budget and air quality. Biomass burning degrades air quality by increasing both particulate matter and ozone levels. Unlike aerosols, ozone is not directly emitted in fires but it is frequently formed in ageing plumes. This is not surprising, as many of the reactive trace gases emitted in biomass burning including nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds, act as precursors for ozone formation. Geographically, Africa is the most significant source region of biomass burning emissions. Here, we report rapid ozone formation in daytime savanna and grassland fire plumes observed in South Africa. We observed higher ozone production in more flaming cases for plumes fresher than 1.5h. However, in plumes aged >1.5h combustion characteristics have no effect, but ozone production is positively correlated with nitrogen oxides. Furthermore, the plumes with highest ozone production also had the strongest secondary aerosol formation during plume ageing. Additionally, we report emission factors of nitric oxide and sulphur dioxide for southern African savanna and grassland fires. SO2 emission factor was on average 1.1 g kg−1, which is two to three times higher than previous observations for savanna and grassland. The main source of soil moisture variability in savanna ecosystems is pulsed rainfall. Rainfall pulsing impacts water‐stress durations, soil moisture switching between wet‐to‐dry and dry‐to‐wet states, and soil moisture spectra as well as derived measures from it such as soil moisture memory. Rainfall pulsing is also responsible for rapid changes in grassland leaf area and concomitant changes in evapotranspirational (ET) losses, which then impact soil moisture variability. With the use of a hierarchy of models and soil moisture measurements, temporal variability in root‐zone soil moisture and water‐stress periods are analysed at four African sites ranging from grass to miombo savannas. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and potential ET (PET)‐adjusted ET model predict memory timescale and dry persistence in agreement with measurements. The model comparisons demonstrate that dry persistence and mean annual dry periods must account for seasonal and interannual changes in maximum ET represented by NDVI and to a lesser extent PET. Interestingly, the precipitation intensity and soil moisture memory were linearly related across three savannas with ET/infiltration ∼ 1.0. This relation and the variability of length and timing of dry periods are also discussed

Sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3) are considered typical inorganic gaseous pollutants in the atmosphere. The aim of this study was to assess long-term seasonal and inter-annual trends of a 21-year SO2, NO2 and O3 passive sampling (monthly means) dataset collected at the Cape Point Global Atmosphere Watch (CPT GAW) station. Comparison of the concentrations of these gaseous species with other IGAC DEBITS Africa measurement sites indicated that levels of these species were generally similar to other African inland ecosystems, but lower compared to an industrial site in southern Africa. The SO2, NO2 and O3 monthly mean concentrations showed seasonal patterns, which can be attributed to various factors influencing levels of these species at CPT GAW. These factors are generally season specific, which include changes in meteorological conditions and source contributions. Higher NO2 concentrations were also attributed to increased microbial activity in the wet season. The O3 seasonal pattern corresponded to the NO2 seasonality, which was attributed to their related chemistry. SO2 and NO2 concentrations displayed inter-annual variability, while O3 did not indicate significant inter-annual fluctuations. The seasonal and inter-annual variability was explored with a multilinear regression model, in which global, regional and local meteorological factors, as well as population growth were included. Modelling results indicated that variances in SO2 concentrations were predominantly influenced by changes in global forcing factors. Global, regional and local factors played a significant role in NO2 trends, which included the influence of population growth and associated increased anthropogenic activities. It was also established that variances in O3 concentrations were predominantly associated with regional and local factors. Statistical relationships between surface ozone (O3) concentration, precursor species and meteorological conditions in continental South Africa were examined from data obtained from measurement stations in north-eastern South Africa. Three multivariate statistical methods were applied in the investigation, i.e. multiple linear regression (MLR), principal component analysis (PCA) and –regression (PCR), and generalised additive model (GAM) analysis. The daily maximum 8-h moving average O3 concentrations were considered in these statistical models (dependent variable). MLR models indicated that meteorology and precursor species concentrations are able to explain ~50% of the variability in daily maximum O3 levels. MLR analysis revealed that atmospheric carbon monoxide (CO), temperature and relative humidity were the strongest factors affecting the daily O3 variability. In summer, daily O3 variances were mostly associated with relative humidity, while winter O3 levels were mostly linked to temperature and CO. PCA indicated that CO, temperature and relative humidity were not strongly collinear. GAM also identified CO, temperature and relative humidity as the strongest factors affecting the daily variation of O3. Partial residual plots found that temperature, radiation and nitrogen oxides most likely have a non-linear relationship with O3,while the relationship with relative humidity and CO is probably linear. An inter-comparison between O3 levels modelled with the three statistical models compared to measured O3 concentrations showed that the GAM model offered a slight improvement over the MLR model. These findings emphasise the critical role of regional-scale O3 precursors coupled with meteorological conditions in daily variances of O3 levels in continental South Africa

Chromite fines (defined as particles smaller than 6 mm) account for a significant fraction of mined South African chromite ore. These fines are pelletized to allow safe furnace smelting conditions. However, pelletization is an energy- and cost-intensive process that requires significant capital investment and has high operational costs as continuous curing temperatures of 1300 – 1500 °C are required. In this study, various cold-bonded pelletization processes were investigated to identify a process to prepare cold-bonded chromite pellets. A feasible process was identified and developed to produce mechanically strong chromite pellets using 3wt% sodium silicate-3 wt% SiO2 as the binder and KOH as an alkaline activator. The binding mechanism is based on the combined effects of sodium silicate and geopolymerization. It was determined that pellets cured at 75 °C had compressive strengths of 2.41 – 3.12 kN. The mechanical strength of these cold-bonded pellets where similar to, or exceed that of pellets currently used in the FeCr industry

This study reports the effect of high-temperature treatment on the electrical properties of charcoal, coal, and coke. The electrical resistivity of industrial charcoal samples used as a reducing agent in electric arc furnaces was investigated as a renewable carbon source. A set-up to measure the electrical resistivity of bulk material at heat treatment temperatures up to 1700 ∘C was developed. Results were also evaluated at room temperature by a four-point probe set-up with adjustable load. It is shown that the electrical resistivity of charcoal decreases with increasing heat treatment temperature and approaches the resistivity of fossil carbon materials at temperatures greater than 1400 ∘C. The heat treatment temperature of carbon material is the main influencing parameter, whereas the measurement temperature and residence time showed only a minor effect on electrical resistivity. Bulk density of the carbon material and load on the burden have a large impact on the electrical resistivity of each material, while the effect of particle size can be neglected at high heat treatment temperature or compacting pressure. The mechanical durability of charcoal slightly increased after heat treatment and decreased for coal and semi-coke samples. The results indicate that charcoal can be used as an efficient carbon source for electric arc furnaces

South Africa is considered an important source region of atmospheric pollutants, which is compounded by high population- and industrial growth. However, this region is understudied, especially with regard to evaluating long-term trends of atmospheric pollutants. The aim of this study was to perform statistical modelling of SO2, NO2 and O3 long-term trends based on 21-, 19- and 16-year passive sampling datasets available for three South African INDAAF (International network to study Atmospheric Chemistry and Deposition in Africa) sites located within proximity of the pollution hotspot in the industrialised north-eastern interior in South Africa. The interdependencies between local, regional and global parameters on variances in SO2, NO2 and O3 levels were investigated in the model. Long-term temporal trends indicated seasonal and inter-annual variability at all three sites, which could be ascribed to changes in meteorological conditions and/or variances in source contribution. Local, regional and global parameters contributed to SO2 variability, with total solar irradiation (TSI) being the most significant factor at the regional background site, Louis Trichardt (LT). Temperature (T) was the most important factor at Skukuza (SK), located in the Kruger National Park, while population growth (P) made the most substantial contribution at the industrially impacted Amersfoort (AF) site. Air masses passing over the source region also contributed to SO2 levels at SK and LT. Local and regional factors made more substantial contributions to modelled NO2 levels, with P being the most significant factor explaining NO2 variability at all three sites, while relative humidity (RH) was the most important local and regional meteorological factor. The important contribution of P on modelled SO2 and NO2 concentrations was indicative of the impact of increased anthropogenic activities and energy demand in the north-eastern interior of South Africa. The role of precipitation (P) variability on evapotranspiration (ET) and its two components transpiration (T) and evaporation (E) rates from savannas continues to draw significant research interest given its relevance to a number of eco-hydrological applications. The work here reports on six years of measured ET and energy flux components, and estimated T from a grazed savanna grassland collected at a research site situated in Welgegund, South Africa. During this period, annual P varied considerably in amount (421 mm to 614 mm), rainy season length and precipitation intensity. T was estimated using annual water use efficiency and gross primary production determined from eddy-covariance measurements of net ecosystem CO2 exchange rates. The computed annual T was highly constrained to 352 ± 8 mm (T/ET = 0.55) for four wet years when rainfall was near or above the long-term mean. This is explained by the near constant annual tree transpiration and moderate water stress of C4 grasses during these years. In a drought year with intermittent rainfall, the annual ecosystem T was reduced due to grass dieback-regrowth that alters the temporal dynamics of bare soil cover and infiltration, and complicates monthly T/ET relation to leaf-area index (LAI). However, annual ET remains approximately equal to annual precipitation (P) even during the drought year due to increased soil evaporation. Indeed, at annual scales, ET ≈ P and annual T is conservative despite variation in amount and timing in rainfall, due to constant water use of mature trees, and the ability of C4 grasses to maintain transpiration at moderate water stress and effectively use pulsed rainfall

Aerosol particles are essential constituents of the Earth's atmosphere, impacting the earth radiation balance directly by scattering and absorbing solar radiation, and indirectly by acting as cloud condensation nuclei. In contrast to most greenhouse gases, aerosol particles have short atmospheric residence times, resulting in a highly heterogeneous distribution in space and time. There is a clear need to document this variability at regional scale through observations involving, in particular, the in situ near-surface segment of the atmospheric observation system. This paper will provide the widest effort so far to document variability of climate-relevant in situ aerosol properties (namely wavelength dependent particle light scattering and absorption coefficients, particle number concentration and particle number size distribution) from all sites connected to the Global Atmosphere Watch network. High-quality data from almost 90 stations worldwide have been collected and controlled for quality and are reported for a reference year in 2017, providing a very extended and robust view of the variability of these variables worldwide. The range of variability observed worldwide for light scattering and absorption coefficients, single-scattering albedo, and particle number concentration are presented together with preliminary information on their long-term trends and comparison with model simulation for the different stations. The scope of the present paper is also to provide the necessary suite of information, including data provision procedures, quality control and analysis, data policy, and usage of the ground-based aerosol measurement network. It delivers to users of the World Data Centre on Aerosol, the required confidence in data products in the form of a fully characterized value chain, including uncertainty estimation and requirements for contributing to the global climate monitoring system

Particulate matter (PM) can affect climate, air quality, human health, acid deposition and visibility, and contain a significant fraction of organic (OC) and elemental carbon (EC). Southern Africa is an important source region for OC and EC, however, little OC and EC data have been published for this region. This paper presents a multi-year, multi-site (an urban-industrial site in the Vaal Triangle, UI-VT; an industrially influenced site at Amerfoort, iI-AF; and two regional background sites at Skukuza and Louis Trichardt, RR-SK and RR-LT) PM with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5) OC and EC dataset for South Africa. The median OC (9.3) and EC (3.2 μg.m−3) concentrations at UI-VT were 1.3 to 2.5 and 2.7 to 4.4 times higher, if compared to the other sites. OC/EC ratios indicated that sources in close proximity to UI-VT were likely the main contributors, while sources that are more distant contributed fractionally more at the other sites. Household combustion for space heating and regional open biomass burning contributed to elevated levels during the cold and dry months at UI-VT. Regional open biomass burning also lead to higher OC and EC concentrations during the dry season at the industrially influenced site (iI-AF) and one of the regional background sites (RR-SK). From the seasonal concentration patterns, it seemed as if household combustion for space heating also contributed at these two sites during the cold months, but this could not be proven, even if only samples with limited influence of open biomass burning were considered. Such biomass burning influences were semi-quantified by considering MODIS fire pixels occurring within the air mass fetch region for each sample. For the remaining regional background site (RR-LT) the results suggesed that only regional open biomass burning contributed to elevated levels of OC and EC in the dry season and that household combustion for space heating did not contribute significantly

A recent paper reported GCxGC-TOFMS analysis used for the first time in southern Africa to tentatively characterise and semiquantify ~1 000 organic compounds in aerosols at Welgegund – a regional background atmospheric monitoring station (Booyens et al., 2015). This was considered to be the largest number of ambient organic compounds tentatively characterised in atmospheric samples utilising GCxGC-TOFMS. In this new paper, ambient polar organic aerosols characterised are further explored in terms of temporal variations, as well as the influence of meteorology and sources. Although atmospheric organic N compounds are considered to be important, especially in new particle formation and their contribution to brown carbon, these species are not that well understood. This can be partially attributed to their chemical complexity. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the characteristics of organic N compounds utilising comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (GCxGC-TOFMS) in aerosol samples that were collected at a savanna-grassland background region and to determine the possible sources. 135 atmospheric organic N compounds were tentatively characterised and semi-quantified, which included amines, nitriles, amides, urea, pyridine derivatives, amino acids, nitro-and nitroso compounds, imines, cyanates and isocyanates, and azo compounds. Amines contributed to 51% of the semi-quantified concentrations, while nitriles, pyridine derivatives, and amides comprised 20%, 11%, and 8%, respectively, of the semi-quantified concentrations. Amines, nitriles, amides, and pyridine derivatives concentrations were higher during the dry season, which were attributed to meteorology and open biomass burning. Anthropogenic sources impacting air masses measured at Welgegund, as well as regional agricultural activities, were considered as the major sources of amines, while the regional influence of household combustion was most likely the main source of nitriles, amides, and pyridine derivatives. The other organic N species were most likely related to the influence of local and regional agricultural activities

This study aimed to characterise aerosols sampled in the vicinity of a major industrialised area, i.e. the Vaal Triangle. It included the determination of oxidative potential as a predictive indicator of particle toxicity. Aerosol samples were collated through the cascade filtering during an eight-month period (12 h over three days in one week). Three size fractions were analysed for organic carbon (OC), black carbon (BC) and oxidative potential (OP), while ionic content was presented as monthly and seasonal concentrations. The continuous measurement of black carbon by an optical attenuation instrument was collated concurrently with cascade filtering. The carbonaceous content was low compared to the ionic one. Within the carbonaceous concentrations, the organic carbon was higher than concentrations of black carbon in both seasons in the ultra-fine fraction; the opposite was the case for the fine fraction, while the coarse fraction concentrations of organic carbon in the dry season had higher concentrations than black carbon in the wet season and organic carbon in the wet season. The OP tended to increase as the size was decreasing for wet season aerosols, whereas, for the dry season, the highest OP was exerted by the fine fraction. The ultrafine fraction was the one showing the most contrasting OP between the two seasons. Continuous monitoring indicated that the higher BC concentrations were recorded in the dry/winter part of the year, with the daily pattern of concentrations being typically bimodal, having both the morning and evening peaks in both seasons. Within the ionic content, the dominance of sulphate, nitrate and ammonium was evident. Multiple linear correlations were performed between all determined compounds. Strong correlations of carboxylic acids with other organic compounds were revealed. These acids point to emissions of VOC, both anthropogenic and biogenic. Manganese, chromium, and silicon ferroalloys are typical examples of alloys that are produced using carbon materials to remove oxygen from the raw materials. A majority of such alloys are currently produced in electric furnaces. The carbon material is chosen based on cost and properties such as content of trace elements and their physical strength. In addition, properties such as CO2 and SiO reactivity may affect the consumption of carbon and energy. Slag reactivity may also affect the quality of the final product, whereas the electrical resistivity of the carbon materials at high temperature will have an effect on the distribution of the temperature in the furnace and the stability of the operation. Finally, the environmental footprint of the operation will be indirectly affected by the carbon materials through CO2, SO2, and trace element emissions

Electricity consumption is the largest cost contributing factor in the production of ferrochrome. Currently the pelletized chromite pre-reduction process (solid-state reduction of chromite) is the process option with the lowest specific electricity consumption (MWh/ton). In this process, pelletized chromite is fed into a rotary kiln at 1573 K (1300 °C), where partial pre-reduction takes place. Damring formation (material build-up) in the rotary kiln causes routine shutdowns, resulting in loss of revenue. The damring formation is possibly caused by melting of the ash of the pulverized coal used to fire the kiln and/or the partial melting of the chromite pellets. Ash fusion temperatures of twenty different samples were evaluated to assess the temperature at which the pulverized coal ash will start to contribute to damring formation. Sessile drop tests were used to assess the softening behavior of different ore types (e.g., UG2, MG, and LG metgrade), as well as softening of composite chromite pellets made from these ores. Actual damrings were also analyzed using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Results indicate that it is mainly the pulverized coal ash that will contribute to damring formation, and not ore or pellet softening. Multiple-linear regression was used to derive equations to predict the ash fusion temperatures of the pulverized coal ash, which can be used by ferrochrome producers to optimize pulverized coal selection

The specific energy consumption (SEC) of the pelletized chromite prereduction process is the lowest of all FeCr production processes commercially applied. This process also eliminates the use of chromite ore fines that could result in furnace blow-outs or so-called bed turnovers, yields a high chromium (Cr) recovery, and can produce a low-sulphur (S) and -silicon (Si) FeCr. However, this process requires extensive operational control due to the variation in pre-reduction levels and carbon contents of the pre-reduced, pelletized furnace feed material. The wet chemical analytical method currently applied for the determination of chromite prereduction is time-consuming. In this paper, the development of an alternative method consisting of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrograph image processing is presented. A strong linear correlation (R2 = 0.919) between chromite pre-reduction (%), as determined by wet chemical analysis, and the new method was obtained. Further development could result in the industrial application of the method, which could contribute significantly to the metallurgical stability and enhanced process control of the pelletized chromite pre-reduction process

Ferrochrome (FeCr) is vital for the production of stainless and high-alloy ferritic steels, since it is the only source of new Cr units. FeCr production is an energy-intensive process. The pelletized chromite prereduction process is most likely the FeCr production process with the lowest specific electricity consumption (SEC), i.e. MWh/t, currently in operation. However, due to increases in costs, efficiency, and environmental pressures, FeCr producers are attempting to lower their overall energy consumption even further. Recently, it was proven that pre-oxidation of chromite ore prior to pelletization and prereduction significantly decreases both the SEC and lumpy carbonaceous reductants required for smelting. This paper presents the first attempt at conceptualizing the technoeconomic feasibility of integrating chromite pre-oxidation into the prereduction process. Financial modelling yielded a net present value (NPV) at a 10% discount rate of approximately R900 million and an internal rate of return (IRR) of approximatelyy 30.5% after tax, suggesting that the implementation of pre-oxidation prior to pellet prereduction may be financially viable. Sensitivity analysis indicated that the parameter with the greatest influence on project NPV and IRR is the level of prereduction. This indicates that the relationship between maintaining the optimum pre-oxidation temperature and the degree of prereduction is critical for maximium process efficiency

During stainless steel production, new chromium units are obtained from ferrochrome, a relatively crude alloy produced from chromite ore. Large chromite reserves have recently been discovered in the so-called Ring of Fire, Canada. Due to the strategic importance of uninterrupted stainless steel production in North America, it is highly likely that these reserves will be exploited in the foreseeable future. However, the Ring of Fire is located in an area that forms part of the largest peatland in the world, as well as the traditional territories of several First Nations (indigenous American communities), which highlights the environmental and social sensitive nature of the intended developments. In this review, relevant mining and/or smelting processes were considered within the context of possible prevention and mitigation of hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), formation, and the treatment of possible Cr(VI) containing waste materials. Cr(VI) is classified as a carcinogen and it has several negative environmental impacts. Prior to commencing chromite mining in the Ring of Fire, baseline studies should be undertaken to determine the possible natural occurrence of Cr(VI) in soils, untreated chromite ore and surface/groundwater, as well as sources thereof. During mining and ore processing, dry milling was identified as the only process step with the potential to generate Cr(VI); therefore, it should be avoided. Instead, wet milling should be used. Assessments of all process steps associated with conventional ferrochrome production indicated that smelting will lead to the formation of unintended small amounts of Cr(VI) (mg.kg−1 concentration range), irrespective of the technology applied. However, this review proved that it will be possible to produce ferrochrome without causing occupational/community health issues related to Cr(VI), as well as environmental pollution, if appropriate preventative and mitigation measures are applied. The production of ferrochrome (FeCr) is a reducing process. However, it is impossible to completely exclude oxygen from all of the high-temperature production process steps, which may lead to unintentional formation of small amounts of Cr(VI). The majority of Cr(VI) is associated with particles found in the off-gas of the high-temperature processes, which are cleaned by means of venturi scrubbers or bag filter dust (BFD) systems. BFD contains the highest concentration of Cr(VI) of all FeCr wastes. In this study, the solubility of Cr(VI) present in BFD was determined by evaluating four different BFD samples. The results indicate that the currently applied Cr(VI) treatment strategies of the FeCr producer (with process water pH ≤ 9) only effectively extract and treat the water-soluble Cr(VI) compounds, which merely represented approximately 31% of the total Cr(VI) present in the BFD samples evaluated. Extended extraction time, within the afore-mentioned pH range, proved futile in extracting sparingly-soluble and water-insoluble Cr(VI) species, which represented approximately 34% and 35% of the total Cr(VI), respectively. Due to the deficiencies of the current treatment strategies, it is highly likely that sparingly water-soluble Cr(VI) compounds will leach from waste storage facilities (e.g. slimes dams) over time. Therefore, it is critical that improved Cr(VI) treatment strategies be formulated, which should be an important future perspective for FeCr producers and researchers alike

Ferrochrome (FeCr) production is an energy-intensive process. Currently, the pelletized chromite pre-reduction process, also referred to as solid-state reduction of chromite, is most likely the FeCr production process with the lowest specific electricity consumption, i.e., MWh/t FeCr produced. In this study, the effects of carbonaceous reductant selection on chromite pre-reduction and cured pellet strength were investigated. Multiple linear regression analysis was employed to evaluate the effect of reductant characteristics on the aforementioned two parameters. This yielded mathematical solutions that can be used by FeCr producers to select reductants more optimally in future. Additionally, the results indicated that hydrogen (H)- (24 pct) and volatile content (45.8 pct) were the most significant contributors for predicting variance in pre-reduction and compressive strength, respectively. The role of H within this context is postulated to be linked to the ability of a reductant to release H that can induce reduction. Therefore, contrary to the current operational selection criteria, the authors believe that thermally untreated reductants (e.g., anthracite, as opposed to coke or char), with volatile contents close to the currently applied specification (to ensure pellet strength), would be optimal, since it would maximize H content that would enhance pre-reduction

According to the latest assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate (IPCC), aerosol black carbon (BC) is considered the second most important contributor to global warming after carbon dioxide (CO2). Since BC is part of the atmospheric particulate fraction that have a relatively short atmospheric lifetime, the climatic influence of BC is particularly relevant on a regional scale. This paper presents equivalent black carbon (eBC) (derived from an optical absorption method) data collected from three sites in the interior of South Africa, where continuous measurements were conducted, i.e. Elandsfontein, Welgegund and Marikana, as well elemental carbon (EC) (determined by evolved carbon method) at five sites where samples were collected once a month on a filter and analysed off-line, i.e. Louis Trichardt, Skukuza, Vaal Triangle, Amersfoort and Botsalano

Hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), is a proven human carcinogen. Of interest in this paper was the regional atmospheric pollution of Cr(VI) from the ferrochromium and related industries located in the western Bushveld Complex (wBC) of South Africa. A significant fraction of the world's ferrochromium and platinum group metals is produced in this region. Particulate matter (PM), in two size fractions, i.e. PM2.5 (≤2.5 μm) and PM2.5−10 (2.5–10 μm), was sampled for a full calendar year at a regional background site, which is situated downwind of the wBC on the dominant anti-cyclonic recirculation route of air mass over the South African interior. Results indicated that Cr(VI) concentrations in air masses that had passed over the regional background were below the detection limit of the analytical technique applied, but that Cr(VI) in air masses that had passed over the wBC were elevated and had a median concentration of 4.6 ng/m3. The majority of Cr(VI) was found to be in the finer size fraction (PM2.5), which could be explained by the nature of Cr(VI)-containing PM being emitted by the sources in the wBC and the atmospheric lifetimes of different PM size fractions. The results further indicated that it is possible that not only pyrometallurgical sources in the wBC, but also other combustion sources outside the wBC contributed to the observed atmospheric Cr(VI) concentrations

Raman lidar data of one year was been analyzed to obtain information relating aerosol layers in the free troposphere over South Africa, Elandsfontein. In total, 375 layers were observed above the boundary layer during the period 30th January 2010 – 31st January 2011. The seasonal behavior of aerosol layer geometrical characteristics as well as intensive and extensive optical properties were studied. In general, layers were observed at higher altitudes during spring (2520 ± 970 m) while the geometrical layer depth did not show any significant seasonal dependence. The variations of most of the intensive and extensive optical properties analyzed were high during all seasons. Layers were observed at mean altitude of 2100 m ± 1000 m with lidar ratio at 355 nm of 67 ± 25 and extinction-related Ångström exponent between 355 and 532 nm of 1.9 ± 0.8

South Africa is the economic hub of southern Africa and is regarded as an important source region of atmospheric pollutants. A nitrogen dioxide (NO2) hotspot is clearly visible from space over the South African Mpumalanga Highveld, while South Africa is also regarded as the 9th largest anthropogenic sulphur (S) emitting country. Notwithstanding the importance of South Africa with regard to nitrogen (N) and S emissions, very limited data has been published on the chemical composition of wet deposition for this region. This paper presents the concentrations of sodium (Na+), ammonium (NH4+), potassium (K+), calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), nitrate (NO3−), chloride (Cl−), sulphate (SO42−) and water-soluble organic acids (OA) in the wet deposition samples collected between 2009 and 2014 at four South African IDAF (IGAC DEBITS Africa) sites, which are regarded as regional representatives of the north-eastern interior. Also, wet deposition fluxes of the ten ions are calculated and presented in this paper. The results show that the total ionic concentrations and fluxes of wet deposition were much higher at the two sites closer to anthropogenic emissions, while the pH of wet deposition at these two sites were lower compared to that of the two sites that were less impacted by anthropogenic emissions. . The major sources of the ten ions included marine, terrigenous (crust), fossil fuel combustion, agriculture and biomass burning. Significant contributions from fossil fuel combustion were determined for the two sites in close proximity to anthropogenic source regions. The results of back trajectory analysis, however, did indicate that the two remote sites are also affected by air masses passing over the source region through anti-cyclonic recirculation. The largest contributions at the two sites distant from the anthropogenic source regions were marine sources, while the impact of biomass burning was also more significant at the remote sites. A global vertically resolved aerosol data set covering more than 10 years of observations at more than 20 measurement sites distributed from 63 N to 52 S and 72 W to 124 E has been achieved within the Raman and polarization lidar network PollyNET. This network consists of portable, remote-controlled multiwavelength-polarization-Raman lidars (Polly) for automated and continuous 24/7 observations of clouds and aerosols. PollyNET is an independent, voluntary, and scientific network. All Polly lidars feature a standardized instrument design with different capabilities ranging from single wavelength to multiwavelength systems, and now apply unified calibration, quality control, and data analysis. The observations are processed in near-real time without manual intervention, and are presented online at polly.tropos.de. The paper gives an overview of the observations on four continents and two research vessels obtained with eight Polly systems. The specific aerosol types at these locations (mineral dust, smoke, dust-smoke and other dusty mixtures, urban haze, and volcanic ash) are identified by their Ångström exponent, lidar ratio, and depolarization ratio. The vertical aerosol distribution at the PollyNET locations is discussed on the basis of more than 55 000 automatically retrieved 30 min particle backscatter coefficient profiles at 532 nm as this operating wavelength is available for all Polly lidar systems. A seasonal analysis of measurements at selected sites revealed typical and extraordinary aerosol conditions as well as seasonal differences. These studies show the potential of PollyNET to support the establishment of a global aerosol climatology that covers the entire troposphere.

This chapter gives an overview of sampling ambient air using passive (also termed diffusive) samplers. The use of this type of sampler in ambient air monitoring has become very popular due to the simplicity and convenience in terms of its deployment. Although the use of these samplers requires the back up of a good analytical laboratory for preparation and analysis, the site operational requirements are very basic. The popularity of passive sampling is strongly linked to the fact that it can be easily deployed at remote and/or high risk environments and is less susceptible to damage or theft. These samplers have added advantages in that they are small in size, light in weight, silent in operation, cost effective and do not require any electricity or field calibration. They can also easily be deployed by non-specialists which make the spatial and temporal collection of data over long time periods possible. The basic principles, sampler network design, methodology, quality assurance and a few case studies are discussed

The physical properties of oxidative sintered pellets produced from typical South African UG2 ore are compared with the physical properties of pellets produced with conventional South African metallurgical-grade chromite ore (from the Lower Group 6 or the Middle Group 1 and 2 seams). A statistical evaluation of the cured (sintered) compressive strengths proved that pellets prepared from UG2 ore are likely to have the same, or better, compressive strength than pellets prepared from metallurgical-grade chromite ore. The cured abrasion strength of the UG2 pellets was also superior to that of the metallurgical-grade pellets. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) backscatter, secondary electron, and elemental X-ray mapping were used to determine the reasons for the general superior strength of the UG2 pellets. The case study UG2 ore also required 13 kWh/t less energy for milling to attain the required particle size distribution prior to pelletization, which can lead to substantial cost savings. Results presented in this paper can be utilized by ferrochromium (FeCr) producers to better quantify the advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of UG2 ore for FeCr production

Anthropogenic and anthropogenically induced emissions (such as emissions due to land use change) of various gaseous and particulate atmospheric species have substantially increased since the onset of the industrial revolution. This can be illustrated by considering the atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs), e.g. methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2). The global average concentration of CH4 has increased by a factor of 2.5 from approximately 722 ppb in 1750 to 1803 ppb in 2011

In this paper the importance of a Systems Engineering (SE) approach is reiterated for developing and managing an atmospheric monitoring station. A newly established comprehensive atmospheric monitoring station, the Welgegund Atmospheric Monitoring Station (WAMS), was used as a case study - system of interest (SOI). In agreement with commercial projects, the Customer Need has shown that the SOI life-cycle may be time intensive with significant financial impacts. The Operational Concept was visualised in terms of physical requirements, operational methodology and final deliverables. Functional Analysis emphasised the design importance of the measurement station for continuous operation and to remain relevant throughout the system life-cycle. Physical architectures and interfaces were scrutinised to maximise the efficiency of the SOI. Testing was vital and remains a continuous process. By continuing to implement the SE approach, the WAMS will satisfy the changing and unique stakeholder requirements throughout the system life-cycle. The paper concludes that the SE framework provided made a positive contribution since the initial design and has adequately identified all the requirements in order for WAMS to be implemented on time, within budget and to the level of performance required.

The Multi-Angle Absorption Photometer (MAAP) is a widely-used instrument for aerosol black carbon (BC) measurements. In this paper, we show correction methods for an artifact found to affect the instrument accuracy in environments characterized by high black carbon concentrations. The artifact occurs after a filter spot change – as BC mass is accumulated on a fresh filter spot, the attenuation of the light (raw signal) is weaker than anticipated. This causes a sudden decrease, followed by a gradual increase in measured BC concentration. The artifact is present in the data when the BC concentration exceeds ~3 μg m−3 at the typical MAAP flow rate of 16.7 L min−1 or 1 m3 h−1. The artifact is caused by erroneous dark counts in the photodetector measuring the transmitted light, in combination with an instrument internal averaging procedure of the photodetector raw signals. It was found that, in addition to the erroneous temporal response of the data, concentrations higher than 9 μg m−3 (at the flow rate of 16.7 L min−1) are underestimated by the MAAP. The underestimation increases with increasing BC accumulation rate. At a flow rate of 16.7 L min−1 and concentration of about 24 μg m−3 (BC accumulation rate ~0.4 μg min−1), the underestimation is about 30%. There are two ways of overcoming the MAAP artifact. One method is by logging the raw signal of the 165° photomultiplier measuring the reflected light from the filter spot. As this signal is not affected by the artifact, it can be converted to approximately correct absorption and BC values. However, as the typical print formats of the MAAP do not give the reflected signal as an output, a semi-empirical correction method was developed based on laboratory experiments to correct for the results in the post-processing phase. The correction function was applied to three MAAP datasets from Gual Pahari (India), Beijing (China), and Welgegund (South Africa). In this work satellite based observations were used to estimate the concentration of nucleation mode aerosols over South Africa. The nucleation mode aerosols can not be detected directly with satellite instruments since they are much smaller than the optically active aerosols, hence the concentrations were estimated using proxies introduced by Kulmala et al. (2011). Results showed enhanced values of both primary and regional scale nucleation proxies over the Mpumalanga Highveld industrial area, whereas over the Johannesburg-Pretoria megacity only the primary nucleation proxy showed elevated values. To estimate how well satellite based proxies work, the relation between satellite and in situ based quantities was studied in more detail. The correlation between aerosol optical depth (AOD) and condensation sink (CS) was 0.2-0.3 depending on the location. Boundary layer height affected the correlation somewhat, but there are other factors, such as the effect of dust on AOD, that are more likely to have a stronger impact

Production of ferrochrome is an energy intensive process. Pelletised chromite pre-reduction is most likely the ferrochrome production process with the lowest specific electricity consumption, i.e. MWh/t ferrochrome produced. Higher chromite pre-reduction levels correspond to lower specific electricity corzsumptions. In this paper the effect of CaC03 addition and clay binder selection on pelletised chromite pre-reduction is presented. Results indicated that CaC03 addition significantly enhances the level of chromite pre-reduction achieved within a given time and temperature horizon. Hovvever, CaC03 addition caused severe decreases in both compressive and abrasion strengths of pre-reduced pellets, which is unlikely to be negated by mitigation measures. The addition of CaC03 in the pelletised chromite pre-reduction process will therefore most probably result in the formation of excessively fine feed materials. In practise, this reduces the usefulness of this technique for submerged arc furnace f errochrome production significantly, since excessive fines in the feed material are likely to result in increased operational instabilities, equipment damage and safety risks. TGA and thermochemical calculations also indicated that C02 released from the CaC03 will result in additional carbon consumption, which is an additional negative associated with its use as an additive during pre-reduction of composite chromite pellets. Although the research work covered in this paper was not specifically aimed at obtaining mechanistic information, thermo-mechanical analysis indicated that especially iron pre-reduction rates were enhanced by CaC03 addition. It was also proved that clay binder selection not only ilifluence the physical strength of the pre-reduced pellets, but also the level of achievable pre-reduction. Additionally, increased addition of clay binder to the composite pellet was found to result in progressive decline in the degree of chromite pre-reduction achieved within a s

The tropospheric ozone concentrations over southern Africa are relatively high due to large precursor emissions from biomass burning, vegetation and anthropogenic sources and the intensity of solar radiation. In this study, we summarize ozone concentration data from both literature and new measurements. Further, we present data on the accumulated vegetation exposure to ozone in terms of the AOT40 index, which is calculated for the sites with hourly ozone and radiation data, with an aim to assess the potential for adverse effects on vegetation. As the seasonal variation of ozone concentrations is large, we discuss the effect of growing season onset on the stomatal gas exchange and the related potential for vegetation impacts. Finally, future research needs are discussed

This study presents a total of four years of sub-micron aerosol particle size distribution measurements in the southern African savannah, an environment with few previous observations covering a full seasonal cycle and the size range below 100 nm. During the first 19 months, July 2006–January 2008, the measurements were carried out at Botsalano, a semi-clean location, whereas during the latter part, February 2008–May 2010, the measurements were carried out at Marikana (approximately 150 km east of Botsalano), which is a more polluted location with both pyrometallurgical industries and informal settlements nearby. The median total concentration of aerosol particles was more than four times as high at Marikana than at Botsalano. In the size ranges of 12–840 nm, 50–840 nm and 100–840 nm the median concentrations were 1856, 1278 and 698 particles cm−3 at Botsalano and 7805, 3843 and 1634 particles cm−3 at Marikana, respectively. The diurnal variation of the size distribution for Botsalano arose as a result of frequent regional new particle formation. However, for Marikana the diurnal variation was dominated by the morning and evening household burning in the informal settlements, although regional new particle formation was even more frequent than at Botsalano. The effect of the industrial emissions was not discernible in the size distribution at Marikana although it was clear in the sulphur dioxide diurnal pattern, indicating the emissions to be mostly gaseous. Seasonal variation was strongest in the concentration of particles larger than 100 nm, which was clearly elevated at both locations during the dry season from May to September. In the absence of wet removal during the dry season, the concentration of particles larger than 100 nm had a correlation above 0.7 with CO for both locations, which implies incomplete burning to be an important source of aerosol particles during the dry season. One of the most commonly employed electrode systems in industrial metal smelting applications is continuous self-baking electrodes, i.e. the Söderberg electrode system. In this system, the temperature at which transition from a liquid/soft paste to a solid carbonaceous electrode takes place is termed the baking isotherm temperature. This temperature is extremely important within the context of electrode management. In this paper, thermo mechanical analysis (TMA) was used to measure the dimensional changes that take place in coal tar pitch in the temperature range relevant to the determination of the baking isotherm temperature. It was found that the baking isotherm temperature of coal tar pitches was between 450 and 475 °C, irrespective of the initial chemical composition and physical characteristics of the coal tar pitch. Subsequent Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) analyses indicated that all coal tar pitches underwent similar compositional changes during the transition from a molten/liquid coal tar pitch to a solid carbonaceous material.

Recent studies have shown very high frequencies of atmospheric new particle formation in different environments in South Africa. Our aim here was to investigate the causes for two or three consecutive daytime nucleation events, followed by subsequent particle growth during the same day. We analysed 108 and 31 such days observed in a polluted industrial and moderately polluted rural environments, respectively, in South Africa. The analysis was based on two years of measurements at each site. After rejecting the days having notable changes in the air mass origin or local wind direction, i.e. two major reasons for observed multiple nucleation events, we were able to investigate other factors causing this phenomenon. Clouds were present during, or in between most of the analysed multiple particle formation events. Therefore, some of these events may have been single events, interrupted somehow by the presence of clouds. From further analysis, we propose that the first nucleation and growth event of the day was often associated with the mixing of a residual air layer rich in SO2 (oxidized to sulphuric acid) into the shallow surface-coupled layer. The second nucleation and growth event of the day usually started before midday and was sometimes associated with renewed SO2 emissions from industrial origin. However, it was also evident that vapours other than sulphuric acid were required for the particle growth during both events. This was especially the case when two simultaneously growing particle modes were observed. Based on our analysis, we conclude that the relative contributions of estimated H2SO4 and other vapours on the first and second nucleation and growth events of the day varied from day to day, depending on anthropogenic and natural emissions, as well as atmospheric conditions.

The chemical interactions responsible for sintering in a coal mineral mixture were investigated in air and in N2. A mineral mixture was made up by mixing kaolin, pyrite, quartz, calcite, hydromagnesite, FeCO3 and anatase in a fixed ratio. The mineral mixture was pelletized and heat-treated up to 1100 °C in order to evaluate sintering by recording the compressive strength values and visual assessment with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Chemical interactions responsible for the trends in the compressive strength results were investigated with simultaneous thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA), as well as X-ray diffraction. The results indicated that the formation of anhydrite (CaSO4) was responsible for increased mechanical strength in the mineral mixture pellets heated in air at temperatures higher that 400 °C. CaSO4 formed from the reaction of the decomposition products of pyrite and calcite (SOx and CaO). The TG/DTA results also indicated that the reaction with pyrite in air caused the decomposition of calcite in the mixture at a lower temperature than was observed for calcite only. The pellets heated in N2 did not increase in mechanical strength during heat-treatment due to the lack of CaSO4 formation in the inert atmosphere. However, SEM analysis indicated that sintering did occur at the higher temperatures in N2. A decrease was observed in the compressive strength values obtained in air at temperatures from 900 °C to 1100 °C. Reasons for the decreased compressive strengths may include increased porosity, decomposition of CaSO4, and changes in the characteristics of the aluminosilicate phases.

In this paper we describe and summarize the main achievements of the European Aerosol Cloud Climate and Air Quality Interactions project (EUCAARI). EUCAARI started on 1 January 2007 and ended on 31 December 2010 leaving a rich legacy including: (a) a comprehensive database with a year of observations of the physical, chemical and optical properties of aerosol particles over Europe, (b) comprehensive aerosol measurements in four developing countries, (c) a database of airborne measurements of aerosols and clouds over Europe during May 2008, (d) comprehensive modeling tools to study aerosol processes fron nano to global scale and their effects on climate and air quality. In addition a new Pan-European aerosol emissions inventory was developed and evaluated, a new cluster spectrometer was built and tested in the field and several new aerosol parameterizations and computations modules for chemical transport and global climate models were developed and evaluated. These achievements and related studies have substantially improved our understanding and reduced the uncertainties of aerosol radiative forcing and air quality-climate interactions. The EUCAARI results can be utilized in European and global environmental policy to assess the aerosol impacts and the corresponding abatement strategies.

Diverse natural and anthropogenic activities in the Highveld of South Africa contribute to elevated levels of inorganic and organic gaseous pollutant species. The primary aims of this investigation were to determine spatial and temporal distributions of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and ozone (O3), as well as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) in this area. Sampling was conducted on a monthly basis for a year at eight strategically selected sites. The highest NO2, SO2 and BTEX concentrations were measured at sites with significant local sources and/or sites impacted by more remote sources, as indicated by overlay back trajectories. O3 concentrations were found to be lower at sites with high levels of NO2, SO2 and BTEX. NO2 and SO2 peaked during winter, while O3 peaked in spring. NO2 and SO2 temporal concentration variations were ascribed to differences in seasonal meteorological conditions, as well as additional sources in winter. The O3 peak coincided with a seasonal CO peak, which was identified as an important precursor for O3 formation. No distinct seasonal trend was observed for BTEX. The annual average concentrations for SO2, NO2, O3 and benzene were below the South African annual standards at all sites.

The production of ferrochrome alloy from chromium bearing chromite ores is conducted at high temperature under highly reducing conditions. However, albeit completely unintended, it is impossible to completely exclude oxygen from all high temperature process steps, with the corresponding possibility arising for the generation of small amounts of Cr(VI) species. Certain Cr(VI) species are regarded as a carcinogenic, with specifically airborne exposure to these Cr(VI) species being associated with cancer of the respiratory system. With approximately three-quarters of the world’s viable chromite ore reserves located in South Africa, and annual ferrochrome production approaching almost half of total annual global output, aspects of Cr(VI) generation and control are of particular relevance and importance to the local industry, and naturally to the global industry at large. This paper seeks to examine theoretical and practical aspects associated with Cr(VI) generation (based largely on experience within the local South African industry, but considered to be generally encountered in the broader global industry context), together with mitigating measures that can be applied within the context of the production processes. From the discussions it is clear that significant improvements in various Cr(VI)-related aspects have been made by the South African ferrochrome industry. However, it is also evident that several areas of uncertainty still exist, which require further research in order to better quantify risks and enhance the efficacy of mitigating steps

South Africa holds more than 70% of the world's viable chromite ore reserves and produces ~46.2% of the world's high carbon ferrochrome. It was recently reported that beneficiated South African chromite ores contained significant amounts of Cr(VI). If this is true, it could have serious consequences for South African chromite mines and the local environment. Currently none of these mines make any provision for Cr(VI) leaching from their mined ores. The data obtained in this study proved that the Cr(VI) content of chromite samples is influenced by the sample preparation technique employed prior to chemical analysis, more specifically, that pulverising of chromite samples in a normal atmospheric environment resulted in Cr(VI) formation. No Cr(VI) was liberated when pulverising was conducted in an inert atmosphere. The presence of Cr(VI) in South African chromite ores therefore seems unlikely. The results also suggest that the perceived threat of Cr(VI) contamination of groundwater and surface water, originating from chromite ore stockpiles, is improbable

An important step in urban purification of drinking water is disinfection by e.g. chlorination where potential pathogenic micro-organisms in the water supply are killed. The presence of organic material in natural water leads to the formation of organic byproducts during disinfection. Over 500 of these disinfection by-products (DBPs) have been identified and many more are estimated to form during the disinfection step. Several DBPs such as trihalomethanes (THMs), which is carcinogenic, poses serious health risks to the community. There is very few quantitative data available which realizes the actual levels of these compounds present in drinking water. The levels of four THMs present in drinking water were measured. It included chloroform, bromodichloromethane, chlorodibromomethane and bromoform. Although microbiological parameters are considered to get more attention than disinfection by-products, the measurement of the levels of these compounds in South-African drinking water is essential together with establishing minimum acceptable concentration levels. The target range for total trihalomethanes (TTHMs) established by the US EPA at the end of 2003 is 0-0.08ug/mL. The aim of this paper is to create an awareness of the problem as well as presenting preliminary results obtained with the method of analysis. Preliminary results indicate that urgent attention must be given to the regulation and monitoring of DBPs in South African drinking water.
