Very recently, the first geometric-arithmetic index $GA$ and arithmetic-geometric index $AG$ were introduced in mathematical chemistry. In the present paper, we first obtain some lower and upper bounds on $AG$ and characterize the extremal graphs. We also establish various relations between $AG$ and other topological indices, such as the first geometric-arithmetic index $GA$, atom-bond-connectivity index $ABC$, symmetric division deg index $SDD$, chromatic number $\chi$ and so on. Finally, we present some sufficient conditions of $GA(G)>GA(G-e)$ or $AG(G)>AG(G-e)$ for an edge $e$ of a graph $G$. The aim of this paper is to obtain new sharp inequalities for a large family of topological indices, including the first variable Zagreb index $M_1^\alpha$, and to characterize the set of extremal graphs with respect to them. Our main results provide lower bounds on this family of topological indices involving just the minimum and the maximum degree of the graph. Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple connected graph and $d_i$ be the degree of its $i$th vertex. In a recent paper [J. Math. Chem. 46 (2009) 1369-1376] the first geometric-arithmetic index of a graph $G$ was defined as $$GA_1=\sum_{ij\in E}\frac{2 \sqrt{d_i d_j}}{d_i + d_j}.$$ This graph invariant is useful for chemical proposes. The main use of $GA_1$ is for designing so-called quantitative structure-activity relations and quantitative structure-property relations. In this paper we obtain new inequalities involving the geometric-arithmetic index $GA_1$ and characterize the graphs which make the inequalities tight. In particular, we improve some known results, generalize other, and we relate $GA_1$ to other well-known topological indices.
