This paper aims to study the characteristics of traditional residential buildings in Gaoyi Village— a kind of atypical village that flourished due to immigration—and to provide guidance for local building protection and repair. The general knowledge, construction practices, and building procedures of the traditional residential houses in Gaoyi Village are summarized based on field surveys and interviews with the carpenters. The regional technique of wearing buckets is a perfect combination of the timber structure technology of the southwest dry bar building and Han architecture. This paper is an important case study of the bucket frame, and may help promote comprehensive explorations of the development of the southern timber frame. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
