Objective To systematically evaluate the prevalence of sarcopenic obesity among the elderly in China. Methods A comprehensive search was conducted in databases including CNKI, VIP, WanFang Data, CBM, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL, covering the period from the establishment of the database to April 2024. Two researchers independently screened the literature, extracted data, and assessed quality, followed by a meta-analysis using Stata 14.0 software. Results A total of 16 cross-sectional studies were included, with an overall sample size of 18 725 participants. The total prevalence of sarcopenic obesity among the elderly in China was found to be 7.4% (95%CI: 5.2%-9.9%). Subgroup analysis revealed a higher prevalence in hospital populations and in studies published after 2020. Studies that assessed muscle quality, strength, and function for diagnosing sarcopenia, as well as those using body fat percentage and body mass index for diagnosing obesity, reported higher prevalence rates. Conclusion The prevalence of sarcopenic obesity among the elderly in China is on the rise. It is recommended to actively promote health education targeted at the elderly population and to implement early screening measures to alleviate the disease burden. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
