With the deepening of the research on soil‐structure interaction（SSI）and structure‐soil‐structure interaction（ SSSI），the interaction effect between densely distributed buildings in cities and their interaction with complex site environment has also attracted widespread attention. There are some limitations in ignoring urban buildings in seismic response analysis. This paper first describes the origin and basis of the site‐city effect，and then summarizes the research status and progress of the site‐city effect according to the analysis model，research methods， evaluation methods and indicators，and influencing factors. Existing studies have shown that site‐city effect can significantly change the ground motion characteristics of site soil，thus further affecting the seismic response of urban dense structures，and its influence can not be ignored. The site‐city effect is mainly affected by urban density， structural dynamic characteristics and distribution form，and soil‐structure stiffness ratio. However，there are relatively few studies on material nonlinearity，seismic spatial effect and site‐city effect considering underground structures.
