The Lower Yellow River reach from Jiubao to Weitan is a wandering reach with wide and shallow river bed and scattered river flow. There have been many abnormal river regimes occurred in the reach in recent years, which leads to beach land erosion and threatens the village and levee safety. A brief analysis of the wandering characteristics of Jiubao reach and the river regime evolution from 2008 to 2012 was conducted. It indicates that insufficient length of river training works results in poor adaptability to different inflow conditions and outflow delivery capacity. Therefore, it is recommended to extend the Mao’ an and Jiubao projects from the end point of the project and extend Sanguan-miao project from the starting point to enhance both the project adaptability to different inflow conditions and outflow delivery capacity. In addition, the Weitan project is extended from the project starting point so that the river course can be driven back to the northern main channel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
