The experimental results show that the definite separation of both modes appeared in wedge-shaped region downstream of the point source in accordance with the dispersion relation. It is also shown that the characteristic features of growing disturbances are in good agreement with the linear stability theory making use of the method of complex characteristics. A principal attention is paid to the streamline-curvature instability which derives from the curvature of the external streamlines, which is predicted by the linear stability theory. It is shown that although the streamline-curvature instability dominated the flow field, a structure deriving from cross-flow instability coexists in the region near the leading-edge. The following design concepts for reducing supersonic drag were incorporated: arrow planform, warp, area-ruled body and Natural Laminar Flow (NLF) wing. For the NLF wing design, an optimum design pressure distribution was investigated using SALLY code and a new inverse design method with CFD was originally developed. Unsteady disturbances with definite frequencies instead of stationary vortices, which have long been considered as generic disturbances, are observed in hot-wire surveys of the unstable flow field. Sweep angle and attack angle are varied in order to see the dependence on the turbulent transition feature. Crossflow vortices (primary instability) and inflexional secondary instability are visualized by two different techniques and hot wire measurement. In this flow field, there are a couple of important things which are not very clear. Present investigation is focused on making these things clear through experiment. Those nonparallel terms which contribute mainly to the streamline-curvature effect are retained in this formulation and approximated by their local finite-difference values. Detailed velocity field measurement were performed using rotatable hot wire system. It was found out that high frequency (f(sub 2)) disturbance seems to be streamwise inflectional instability appeared locally over each top of crossflow vortices, and drive the flow field directly to full turbulent state.
