Increasing filler content in paper products and saving fiber resources are the permanent goals in paper industry. In this work, precipitated calcium carbonate and cellulosic fiber were refined in PFI mill so as to improve the paper strength and optical properties. Results showed that co-refining method deliver nine percent higher in filler content than regular filling method when the paper tensile index was similar ( 26 ~ 28 N • m/ g) . In addition, light scattering coefficient was also enhanced by co-refining. The images obtained by scanning electron microscopy implied that particle breakage and formation of filler-fiber composite during co-refining help to improve paper strength and optical properties.
