Resistance strain measurement technique is a strain measurement technique of single point. When it is used for stress state measurement of complex structures with larger stress gradient, we need to locate the position of point in advance, and attach a strain rosette on it, which makes the measurement rather complicated. Three-dimensional digital image correlation ( 3D-DIC ) can obtain the full-field deformation field of structure surface to be detected and reveal intuitively the position of the point to be detected and its corresponding strain state. Based on a tensile test of an eccentric specimen, the strain state results were compared between 3D-DIC and strain gauge and finite element analysis. Experimental results indicate that the measurement accuracy of 3D-DIC is not as good as that of strain gauge, and that 3D-DIC can still provide rather accurate results. 3D-DIC has unique advantage over strain gauge and therefore is very appropriate for strain state measurement of complex structure with larger stress gradient.
