Objective: To explore the effect of strengths-based cognitive behavioral therapy (SBCBT) model on hope in adolescents with depression. Methods: Totally 89 adolescents with depression meeting the diagnostic criteria for mild and moderate depressive episodes of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) were randomly divided into the combined treatment group (n=44) and the sertraline group (n=45). The combined treatment group received 8 times of SBCBT intervention on the basis of the sertraline group. The Adult Dispositional Hope Scale (ADHS), Hamilton Depression Scale-17 (HAMD-17) and Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) were measured at base-line and 6 weeks after intervention. Results: After 6-week intervention, the ADHS total scores in both groups were higher than the baseline (P <0.001), and the total scores of HAM D-17 and HAMA in both groups were lower than the baseline (P <0.001). The ADHS total scores were higher and the total scores of HAMD-17 and HAMA were lower in the combined treatment group than in the sertraline group (P<0.001). Correlation analysis showed that the total score difference of ADHS was positively correlated with the total score difference of HAMD-17 (r=0. 46, P <0.001) and the total score difference of HAMA (r = 0.29, P <0.01). Conclusion: It suggests that SBCBT is beneficial to improve depression, and enhance the hope of adolescent patients with depression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
