Abstract

EUSO (Extreme Universe Space Observatory) is a scientific mission to investigate Extreme Energy Cosmic Rays and the High Energy Cosmic Neutrinos. It looks down the dark side of the Earth from the orbit to look for the streak of UV-light produced by an EECR interacting with the Earth's atmosphere. EUSO will observe the fluorescence signal induced in air by the Extensive Air Showers and the Cerenkov light diffused when the shower front impinges on a cloud top or on ground. EUSO is a super-wide field camera with a diameter of 2.5 meters. The UV-light is imaged by a Fresnel lens optics into a finely segmented focal surface detector. The subsequent Phase-A study is undergoing with a goal for flight in 2010. EUSO is a collaborative effort of 27 research groups from Europe, Japan and U.S.A. and has been designed to operate for more than 3 years mission lifetime., 資料番号: AA0046917100

Abstract

Chemical reactions within impact-induced vapor clouds may have played an important role in both the evolution of atmosphere of the Earth and the origin of life. However, chemical reaction process within impact vapor clouds is not understood well yet. In particular, chemical interaction between silicates and carbon compounds has not been studied extensively. The thermal decomposition of silicates within impact vapor clouds may affect the carbon chemistry within impact vapor clouds. Laser irradiation experiments using terrestrial rocks and chondrites by Mukhin et al. (1989) show that the carbon-bearing gas produced in the laser heating experiments were composed mainly of the oxidized species, such as CO and CO2, with only small amounts of reduced species such as hydrocarbon, HCN, and CH3CHO. Mukhin et al. (1989) propose that oxygen derived from thermal decomposition of silicates may oxidize carbon. However, such an oxidation process has not been investigated in detail. Most theoretical studies on chemical reaction in impact vapor clouds neglected such an effect of oxygen released from silicates. Abstract

Spectroscopic observations were carried out at Mauna Kea, Hawaii and Nobeyama Radio Observatory, Japan, during the strong activity of the Leonid meteor shower in 2001. By using intensified HDTV camera equipped with a reflective grating and UV lens covering 300 to 850 nm wavelength range, the first detection of spectra under 350 nm was succeeded on the ground-based observation. 13. Peak estimate of the 2001 Leonids in HRO in comparison with FRO

Abstract

In Japan, there are mainly two methods of Radio Meteor Observation, FM-band and Ham-band Radio Observation (FRO and HRO). In 2001, so many Leonid meteor echoes appeared with both methods that it became impossible for one echo to be separated from the others in HRO method because of saturation effects, though these echoes in FRO could be separated. The lower frequency of the HRO radio waves caused this saturation. This research is to estimate the number of HRO echoes during the saturation period around the Leonid peak by comparing HRO with FRO. In this paper, to estimate the number of the echoes at the peak time, a useful new index named FRO/HRO ratio is defined, which shows the ratio of the echo numbers in FRO to HRO. As the result, the number of HRO echoes at the Leonids' peak time in 2001 was successfully estimated, and its profile during saturation in HRO became clear. Additional analysis for the 2001 Geminids in the same way, and its comparison with that of Leonids, make it possible to find some relative characteristics of these meteor showers such as the geocentric velocity, the beginning and end heights of the meteors, and so on. Consequently, the FRO/HRO ratio can make the saturated data usable and also reveal some other aspects of meteor showers.

Abstract

In 2001, Leonids meteor shower was expected the impressive appearance would be seen. It was very important to monitor and catch the Leonids meteor activity at all times. Radio Meteor Observation is one of the best method for monitoring meteor activity. Because it is possible to observe at all times even if in bad weather and at twilight time. In addition, by unifying worldwide data, the radiant elevation problem can be solved. In this research, the Leonids active structure and characters are made clear by using worldwide data. These data were provided by the global project of Radio Meteor Observation. This project participants were 91 observing sites in 15 countries. As a result, the high activity kept for 17 hours since 6:00 UT 18th. The half width time of the first peak (America) was three hours and the main peak (Asia and Australia) was 10 hours. In addition, from Japanese data, the complicated peak structure was found. The Asian peak was made up of three types. They were main peak around 18:30 UT, sub peak around 21:30 UT and bright meteors component.

Abstract

The detailed observations that occurred during the recent Leonid showers/storm have provided a wealth of data on fast meteors, with an entry velocity of 72 km/s and wide range of meteor sizes. Despite many attempts, the details of the interaction between the entering particles and the atmosphere are still poorly understood. A physical model of high-velocity, high-altitude meteors taking into account their ablation and radiation is proposed. A new approach is used to calculate this model that includes both gasdynamical and statistical simulations. This combined description allows to take into account all features of the considered process-meteoroid motion in rarefied flow at high altitudes and formation of a vapor cloud around the body, to consider nonelastic processes in particle collisions and to determine the resultant luminous area.

We reexamined scenarios of atmosphere formation and the chemical composition of the terrestrial atmosphere during the several hundred million years after its formation. Analysis of chemical equilibrium showed that there are two possible types of atmospheres: (1) H2-CH4-rich atmosphere, (2) CO2-H2O atmosphere equilibrated with graphite.
