Abstract

Methane(CH4) and nitrous oxide(N2O) are two important trace gases,which are considered to have 15—30 and 150—200 times more radioactively active than CO2,respectively.It is well known that agricultural soils are the major sources of atmospheric CH4 and N2O.IPCC(2007) revealed that global warming potentials(GWPs) of CH4 and N2O are different.Previous researches have investigated some factors that affect the rates of CH4 and N2O emission fluxes,such as soil properties,climate,water regime,organic matter incorporation and plant physiology.However,the effects of different winter covering crops cultivation on CH4 and N2O emission fluxes from double-cropping paddy fields is unclear.So the quantitative and possible mechanisms dependence of CH4 and N2O emission fluxes from double-cropping paddy fields on different winter covering crops cultivation is still far from being understood.Hence,the static chamber-gas chromatography(GC) technique with manual method was chosen to identify the effects of different winter covering crops cultivation(including no-tillage ryegrass and double rice cropping(T1),no-tillage Chinese milk vetch and double rice cropping(T2),tillage rape and double rice cropping(T3),no-tillage rape and double rice cropping(T4) and fallow and double rice cropping(CK)) on CH4 and N2O emission fluxes from double-cropping paddy fields in subtropical regions of China(28°08′18″ N,113°12′0″ E).The results showed that the fluxes and emission of CH4 and N2O was varied with different winter covering crops cultivation patterns,and generally followed the series T3T1T4T2CK,and ANOVA revealed that the emission fluxes of CH4 and N2O were significantly(P0.01) more from the four treatments during the whole growth stage than that of fallow and double rice cropping(CK).In addition,2.284,1.073,2.989,1.731 and 0.668 g/m2 CH4 emission fluxes were observed from the treatment of T1,T2,T3,T4 and CK during the whole growth stage of winter covering crops,respectively.CH4 emissions during the whole growth stage under T1,T2,T3 and T4 treatments were increased by 241.92%,60.63%,347.46% and 159.13%,respectively.Similarly,the treatments of T1,T2,T3,T4 and CK had also the N2O emission during the winter covering crops whole growth stage with 0.588,0.479,0.719,0.544 and 0.342 g/m2,respectively.N2O emissions during the whole growth stage under T1,T2,T3 and T4 treatments were increased by 71.93%,40.06%,110.23% and 59.06%,respectively.The treatments of T3,T1 had not only the largest CH4 emissions during the winter covering crops whole growth stage with 2.989 and 2.284 g/m2,but also the largest N2O emissions with 0.719 and 0.588 g/m2 from double-cropping paddy fields,respectively.Our study also indicated that GWPs of CH4 and N2O from double-cropping paddy fields was varied with different winter covering crops and followed the general series T3T1T4T2CK.The treatment of T3 also had the largest GWPs of CH4 and N2O from double-cropping paddy fields with 2893.92 kg CO2/hm2,while T1 and T4 had the secondly GWPs of CH4 and N2O from double-cropping paddy fields with 2326.49 and 2056.75 kg CO2/hm2,and the T2 had the lowest GWPs of CH4 and N2O from double-cropping paddy fields with 1698.05 kg CO2 /hm2,respectively.Our results clearly demonstrate that CH4 and N2O emission from double-cropping paddy fields were significantly promoted by planting different winter covering crops in double paddy field ecosystem.Further studies investigating the regulated factors of CH4 and N2O emissions from double-cropping paddy fields is therefore warranted.

Abstract

Root is the principal plant organ for nutrient and water uptake,and the place for transformation,synthesis,and assimilation of plant materials.Enzyme activity and morphological characteristics of root are closely related to crop yield and quality.Previous researches have investigated management practices,such as variety,tillage,fertilization,and irrigation,which affect enzyme activity and morphological characteristics of rice root.Planting winter crop is a common practice in double-cropping paddy fields in southern China.Several cereals,grasses,and legumes have been used as winter crops to improve physical,chemical,and biological properties of paddy soil.Winter crops are also beneficial for soil erosion control and environmental amelioration.Nevertheless,the effects of planting winter crops on soil enzyme activity and morphological characteristics of rice root in double-cropping paddy fields are unclear.The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of winter crops,including potato(Solanum tuberosum L.),Chinese milk vetch(Astragalus sinicus L.),and rape seed(Brassica napus L.),on yields and enzyme activity and morphological traits of root in subsequent rice crops using a 7-year experiment located in Changsha city,Hunan province.Chinese milk vetch was seeded directly at the end of September(approximately 20d before the harvest of late rice),and harvested in the middle of April.Rape seed and potato were transplanted at the end of October and harvested at the end of April.At the harvest of Chinese milk vetch,rape seed,and potato,about 22500 kg/hm2,7500 kg/hm2,and 22500 kg/hm2 straw was returned to the field respectively.Crop yields of early and late rice were estimated at harvesting time from 2005 to 2011.Rice roots were sampled to estimate enzyme activity and morphological characteristics at typical growth stages of early and late rice crops in 2011.In comparison with the control(winter fallow),inclusion of winter crops increased root malondialdehyde(MDA) content in early growth stages for both early and late rice crops.No significant difference was found between all the treatments in late growth stages for both early and late rice crops.Winter crops also improved the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD),catalase(CAT),and peroxidase(POD) in the roots of subsequent rice crops,which were helpful for remitting cell membrane peroxidation.Root morphology traits of the succeeding rice crops varied with preceding winter crops.Planting potato and Chinese milk vetch promoted root growth of early and late rice crops,thus increased rice yield by 6.29% and 7.76% in 2011,respectively.On the other hand,planting rape seed inhibited root growth of late rice and decreased late rice yield by 6.31%,and double rice yield by 1.96%.Correlation analysis indicated that under potato and Chinese milk vetch treatments,the greater length,number,volume,and surface area of rice roots at grain filling stage were major factors contributed to the improved double rice yields.No significant correlations were observed between yield and enzyme activities(MDA,SOD,POD and CAT) of rice.We concluded that potato and Chinese milk vetch were beneficial winter crops for improving root growth and yield of double rice,while rape seed was not recommended as a suitable winter crop in double cropping rice production.In addition,environmental and economic effects should be considered when selecting winter crops.

Abstract

[Objectives] The paper aims to clarify the dry matter accumulation and translocation of nutrient of rice plant under different soil tillage systems in a Chinese milk vetch(Astragalus sinicus L.) and double-cropping rice system. [Methods] The effects of different soil tillage systems on the dry matter accumulation and translocation of nitrogen(N), phosphorous(P) and potassium(K) of early and late rice plants by small area plot experimental method in double-cropping rice paddy field were analyzed in the present paper. The experiments were including four different soil tillage treatments:conventional tillage with residue incorporation(CT), rotary tillage with residue incorporation(RT), no tillage with residue retention(NT), rotary tillage with residue removed as a control(RTO). [Results] The results showed that the total dry matter accumulation of aboveground in different parts of rice plant and the amount of translocation of stem and leaves with RT and CT treatments were higher than those of the other treatments at mature stage of early rice and late rice. And the material translocation rate and material contribution rate of stem and leaves with CT, RT and NT treatments were higher than those of the RTO treatment at mature stage of early rice and late rice. Meanwhile, the contribution rate of material assimilation after heading stage with NT treatment was higher than that of the other treatments of early rice and late rice. The N accumulation amount in stem of rice plant with RT treatment was higher than those of the CT, NT and RTO treatments, and the N accumulation amount in panicle and aboveground of rice plant with CT, RT and NT treatments was higher than those of the RTO treatment at mature stage of early rice and late rice, respectively. And the P accumulation amount in stem and leaves of rice plant with CT and RT treatments was higher than those of the NT and RTO treatments, and the P accumulation amount in panicle and aboveground of rice plant with CT, RT and NT treatments was higher than those of the RTO treatment at mature stage of early rice and late rice, respectively. Meanwhile, the K accumulation amount in stem and aboveground of rice plant with CT and RT treatments was higher than that of the RTO treatment, and the K accumulation amount in leaves and panicle of rice plant with CT treatments was higher than that of the RTO treatment, respectively. [Conclusions] As a result, the total dry matter accumulation of aboveground in different parts of rice plant and the amount of translocation of stem and leaves were higher under application of residue incorporation, it is benefitial to the nutrients accumulation and translocation of rice plants by combined application of crop residues with soil conventional tillage, rotary tillage practices under double-cropping rice system in Southern China paddy field. We collected a large amount of water, soil corrosion test data in recent decades of construction projects and scientific research achievements in Tianjin Binhai New Area, including 188 groups of phreatic water data, 30 groups of confined water test data, and 107 groups of soil soluble salt test data. Based on the stratigraphic situation of the Tianjin Binhai New Area, we analyzed and compared the corrosion behavior of underground phreatic water, the first and second underground diving confined water, and foundation soil (buried depth more than 30 m) in Binhai New Area, preliminarily summarized the basic laws of corrosion, which has a certain guiding significance for corrosion of groundwater and soil engineering of Tianjin Binhai New Area in the future construction of building materials.
