In order to comprehensively study the impact of cold-forming effect on the yield strength and other mechanical properties, existing data of material property tests on steel plate specimens and short column tests on steel tube specimens is collected. The variables covered in the test database include the section form, steel grade, manufacturer, thickness and cold-forming method of steel tubes. A design formula for the yield strength of cold-formed rectangular steel tubes with medium thicknesses is proposed, which takes due consideration of the cold-forming effect and is suitable for the characteristics of steel in China. In order to verify the applicability of the proposed formula, comparisons between the yield strength calculated based on design standards from different countries, the proposed formula and results from stub column tests are carried out. The comparisons indicate that the North America code (AISI S100-2007), the Europe code (EN 1993-1-3:2006) and Canada code (CAN3-S136-M84:1984) overestimate some of the test results for short column specimens. In addition, the yield strengths calculated based on the GB 50018—2002 ‘Technical code of cold-formed thin-walled steel structures’ in China are greater than the test results for some short column specimens with steels manufactured by Bao Steel and a steel grade of Q345. The calculated results of the proposed design formula are smaller than those of the short column test results. Therefore, the proposed formula can be recommended as the design formula for the yield strength of rectangular cold-formed steel tubes with medium-thick wall. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
