Objective To assess the current status of potentially preventable hospitalizations due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Chishui city, identify influencing factors, and provide insights for developing interventions to reduce such hospitalizations. Methods Using the urban and rural residents’ basic medical insurance database from 2020 to 2022 in Chishui city, avoidable hospital admission indicators based on the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) criteria were applied to identify COPD-related avoidable hospitalizations. Logistic regression analysis was performed using R Studio software. Results Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that older age (OR=1.027, P<0.001), being insured as people needing help (OR=1.875, P<0.001) or special care (OR=1.667, P<0.001) categories, seeking care at private medical institutions (OR=7.532, P<0.001), and receiving treatment at unclassified (OR=1.863, P<0.001) or secondary (OR=4.571, P<0.001) healthcare facilities were risk factors for preventable hospitalizations. Conversely, being male (OR=0.880, P<0.001) and insured as retired employees (OR=0.456, P<0.001) were protective factors. Conclusion The incidence of potentially preventable hospitalizations for COPD in Chishui city is notably high. Targeted interventions should focus on elderly, female, and economically disadvantaged patients, enhance COPD diagnosis and treatment capabilities at primary healthcare centers, and implement effective disease management strategies.
