At the end of the article, a retrospective analysis of the educational and educational activities of public libraries of Ukraine in the 1990s of the 20th century was carried out against the background of problems and values, development and priorities of the society at that time. Changes in library legislation, types and types of libraries, content and structure of their activities, processes of creation of a number of national libraries, development in the last decade of the 20th century were studied. modern library system of Ukraine, initiation of active formation of electronic libraries and resources. As part of the contemporary reform of the country's socio-political life, the peculiarities of stimulating readers' interest in national culture and socio-political life, the initiation of publication of textbooks and study guides on librarianship, the integration of traditional library technologies with the creation of new information models of social development, the use of Internet technologies in librarianship. An analysis of the main directions of research into the history of librarianship and libraries in the context of the socio-cultural development of Ukraine in the 20th century was carried out, including the study of the history of public libraries of various cultural centers, societies, and educational institutions. Among the forms of organization of educational and educational activities of public libraries at the turn of the 2000y., the following are highlighted: art exhibitions, literary salons, book presentations, readers' conferences. The methods of educational and educational activities of public libraries in the 1990s include: library debates, use of library posters, reading aloud, literary quizzes, role-playing and intellectual games, trials with elements of theatralization of literary works, book discussions, family reading, etc. It is proved that in the development of educational and educational activities of public libraries of Ukraine at the end of the 20th century, the main characteristics were, on the one hand, a fundamental transformational restructuring of library work based on the revival of national ideas of enlightenment and education in independent Ukraine, and, on the other hand, stagnation of library work in this historical a period caused by the economic crisis in the country, rising prices and inflation., У статті здійснено ретроспективний аналіз просвітницької та виховної діяльності публічних бібліотек України в 1990-ті роки ХХ століття на тлі проблем і цінностей, розвитку та пріоритетів тогочасного суспільства. Вивчено зміни у бібліотечному законодавстві, видах і типах бібліотек, у змісті та структурі їхньої діяльності, процеси створення ряду національних бібліотек, розбудови в останнє десятиліття ХХ ст. сучасної бібліотечної системи України, започаткування активного формування електронних бібліотек та ресурсів. В рамках тогочасного реформування суспільно-політичного життя країни розкрито особливості стимулювання інтересу читачів до національної культури та соціально-політичного життя, започаткування видання підручників та навчальних посібників з бібліотечної справи, інтеграції традиційних бібліотечних технологій зі створенням нових інформаційних моделей розвитку суспільства, використання Інтернет-технологій в бібліотечній справі. Здійснено аналіз основних напрямів дослідження історії бібліотечної справи та бібліотек в контексті соціокультурного розвитку України ХХ ст., серед яких відбувалось вивчення історії публічних бібліотек різних культурних осередків, товариств, просвітницьких установ. Серед форм організації просвітницької та виховної діяльності публічних бібліотек на рубежі 2000-х років виділено: артвиставки, літературні вітальні, презентації книг, читацькі конференції. До методів просвітницької та виховної діяльності публічних бібліотек 1990-х років віднесено: бібліотечні диспути, використання бібліотечних плакатів, читання вголос, літературні вікторини, рольові та інтелектуальні ігри, суди з елементами театралізації літературних творів, обговорення книг, сімейне читання та ін. Доведено, що в розвитку просвітницької та виховної діяльності публічних бібліотек України кінця ХХ століття головними характеристиками були, з одного боку, докорінна трансформаційна перебудова бібліотечної справи на засадах відродженням національних ідей просвітництва та виховання в незалежній Україні, а з іншого, стагнація бібліотечної справи в цей історичний період, викликана економічною кризою в країні, зростанням цін та інфляцією.

The article deals with the Hrygoriy Kostiuk’s works as a unique face of the Ukrainian culture of 20-s-80-s of the last century. He was famous as a writer, a literary and memoirs scholar, a historian and a journalist. His merit is in the researches in the field of cultural, theological, historical-publicistic and literature studies. Kostiuk being a literature historian, a literature critic, a person of encyclopedic knowledge became a prominent figure in cultural life of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Diaspora of the XXth century. In the time allotted by his fate he become a world-known personality, a giant of the spirit, University man. Kostiuk’s personality attract with his only human features as follows: tolerance, kindness and steadfast adherence to principle together regarding cultural and social items. Impulsive, prone to controversy, however he has romantic, mild, touching, sensitive, to the point of sentimentality, temper. He profoundly got interested in the history of Ukrainians, their problems, journalistic researches. His historical and literature, critical and historical-publicistic studies are primarily based on the cultural concept implying a free development if the Ukrainian nation. Kostiuk’s style as a publicist is distinguished with logic and synthesis of thought, consistency and simplicity of the facts presentation, brevity of conclusion and generalizations. Kostiuk’s contribution lies in his presenting of objective assessment of the Soviet society and the contemporary Ukrainian science at the same time. All his life Hrygoriy Kostiuk tried to keep to his own credo, working and increasing the national cultural treasury by editions of the forgotten writers and scientists whose works of art were deleted from the Ukrainian literature history. He took care of valuable documents preservation as historical facts regarding them to be a cultural heritage. His researches propel comprehension of his phenomenon for all scholars., У статті йдеться про всесвітньовідому постать Григорія Костюка, видатного вченого-літературознавця, письменника, мемуариста, історика, журналіста, про його дослідницьку діяльність на ниві культурологічних, теологічних, історико-публіцистичних, літературознавчих студій. Як історик літератури, літературний критик, людина енциклопедичних знань, він став визначною постаттю в культурному житті України та української діаспори ХХ сторіччя.

У статті простежено особливості художньої репрезентації на змістовому та образному рівнях повісті В. Шевчука «Сповідь» ідей та мотивів екзистенціалізму. Розкрито зв’язок філософського, міфологічного, християнського й необарокового сюжетно-змістових та ідейно-образних контекстів твору. Проаналізовано образ вовкулаки, який у художній інтерпретації В. Шевчука поєднав демонологічний і філософський зміст і став утіленням загадковості й амбівалентності природи людини, трагізму її буття, пошуків своєї сутності. Екзистенційний контекст повісті увиразнено в аналізі почуттів і станів, які переживають герої, в еволюції їхнього сприйняття самих себе, світу, інших. З’ясовано, що вибір є своєрідною межовою ситуацією, яка актуалізує тему свободи й найповніше виявляє екзистенцію героїв повісті. The paper analyzes V. Shevchuk’s story “Confession”, in particular tracing the peculiarities of literary representation of ideas and motives of existentialism on the substantive and figurative levels. The focus is on the relationship between the philosophical, mythological, Christian, and neo-baroque plot/content and idea/image contexts of the work. The image of a werewolf in the creative interpretation of V. Shevchuk combined demonological and philosophical content, embodied the idea of the mystery and ambivalence of human nature, the tragedy of existence in the world, and also became an original illustration of the path from absurd existence to a true one. The existential context of the story is highlighted by the analysis of the feelings and states experienced by the heroes: despair, longing, metaphysical horror, alienation, etc. The way taken by both heroes runs through suffering, self-discovery, remorse, and redemption. It is their way to themselves and a way out of the one-dimensional plane of absurd existence, a process of creating the meaning of their own existence. An important stage on this path is the choice, which acquires the significance of a special borderline situation, in which the theme of the tragedy of human existence is actualized and the essence of man, the strength and weakness of his spirit, the desire for freedom are being most fully revealed. The original plot, compositional, narrative, and figurative structure of the story contributes to the unfolding of different time layers, furthers in-depth reflection of the inner world of the heroes and their moods, which create the context for the themes of human knowledge of oneself, the others, the world, and the truth. The historical, mythological, and philosophical story “Confession” testifies to V. Shevchuk’s desire not only to know a person and the complex dialectics of a personal inner world but also to affirm the uniqueness and value of human existence; like in his other works, the writer tries to understand and therefore to justify a person.

У пропонованій статті осмислюється шлях українського перекладача до «Тамаріані»: причини вибору творів для перекладу; мотивація; роль українських неокласиків М. Зерова, М. Рильського, М. Бажана і його уроків перекладу «Витязя в тигровій шкурі» Ш. Руставелі; пошуки «творчої домінанти» «Тамаріані» Чахрухадзе та свого шляху в різноманітті стилістичних і композиційних авторських рішень. Опрацьовані матеріали, пов’язані з роботою Бориса Тена над «Тамаріані», дають підстави вперше розглядати виконаний переклад у контексті українсько-грузинських літературних взаємин ХХ ст.; акцентувати на своєрідності індивідуального творчого проєкту, зокрема й концептуально-методологічних принципів українського перекладу з грузинської. Based on the study of the Central State Archive-Museum of Literature and Art of Ukraine materials, the work traces the way of Ukrainian translator Borys Ten (M. Khomychevskyi) to Georgian literature. In particular, the paper focuses on the work of Chakhrukhadze as a forerunner of the great Rustaveli, the poem’s role in the literature of the Georgian Middle Ages, the motives for making translation, and reception of the work in Ukraine. The library of the Archive-Museum of Literature and Art of Ukraine received a thirty-page manuscript written in pencil with no title page and no name. Having read it, I immediately recognized Chakhrukhadze’s voice, which made me return to the anthology with fragments of Chakhrukhadze’s poem translated by Borys Ten. The contemporary circle of translators used to be rather stable, and they usualy knew each other well. However, Borys Ten did not typically work with Georgian literature, and the numerous pseudonyms that M. Khomychevskyi used after his exile were known mainly to specialists. Despite the peculiarity of a ten-syllable verse, close to the folk samples as much as possible, the translation sounded naturally, without the slightest artificiality. The intrigue was growing since most archival materials concerned the translation of ancient literature and the issues of translation theory and practice, in particular the treatment of hexameter. Even if we consider that due to circumstances, the author had to use pseudonyms at specific periods of his literary activity, Georgian works were not noticed in his translation practice. There emerges a question, the answer to which would explain the path of Borys Ten to Chakhrukhadze and certain pages of his creative life. To reveal the way of the Ukrainian translator to “Tamariani” one must consider his reasons for choosing the field of translation for a career; the role of Ukrainian neo-classics M. Zerov and M. Rylskyi, as well as M. Bazhan and lessons of his translation of “The Knight in the Panther’s Skin” by Rustaveli; the search of the translator’s own way amidst a variety of stylistic and compositional solutions; the development of personal approach to the rendering of original work; the ‘creative dominant’ of “Tamariani” by Chakhrukhadze.

The purpose of the research is to characterize the creative and organizational activities of the leading directors of Severodonetsk in the twentieth century. Research methodology. In the research process, the following methods have been used: historical is to comprehend the figures of O. Biryustyuk, O. Shmal, and O. Oleksandrov in the theater art of Severodonetsk; historical and biographical are to analyze the context of the epoch and aesthetic and artistic vectors of time, which influenced the formation of artistic approaches of these artists; comparative-typological is for differentiated comparison of creative work of directors. Scientific novelty . For the first time the creative and organizational activities of O. Biryustyuk, O. Shmaly and O. Oleksandrov have been systematized and analytically analyzed in the context of the evolution of Severodonetsk theater art in the XX century. Conclusions . The Severodonetsk People's Theater under the direction of O. Biryustyuk performed not only socio-cultural but also educational and educational functions for the locals. O. Shmal's creative and organizational activity became a modern implementation of G. Gurdjiev's principle of "objective art", in particular through the introduction of the author's method of working with actors. Director O. Alexandrov enriched the palette of the theatrical life of Severodonetsk with his epithet and avant-gardism. On the whole, the relatively short history of the development of the Severodonetsk theater art shows that the dynamics of this process have been determined by a tendency that is characteristic of national processes of the Ukrainian theatrical life formation: from amateur forms to professional ones. The analysis of the latter testifies to their active development through the use of new directorial approaches that contributed to the growth of the acting skills of the collectives and the enrichment of the repertoire palette for the revival of national cultural traditions. Directed searches and organizational and creative activity of O. Biryustyukova, O. Shmal and O. Oleksandrov made a significant contribution to the theater art development of Severodonetsk in the XX century and it has evolved rapidly and multifaceted from a local amateur theater group of like-minded people to a leading regional professional theater and entertainment institution of culture.

У статті на прикладі численних алюзій прозаїка до творів світового письменства продемонстровано, що однозначність ідеологічного змісту роману істотно ускладнюється завдяки введенню в текст прямих і прихованих цитат з авторів, що жили вже після Хмельниччини: розповідач цитує як українських (Митрофан Довгалевський, Григорій Сковорода, Тарас Шевченко, Олекса Стороженко, Михайло Коцюбинський, Володимир Сосюра та ін.), так і зарубіжних письменників (Вільям Фолкнер, Анна Ахматова, Борис Пастернак). Анахронічні цитати формують образ гетьмана як утілення всієї української історії та культури у світовому контексті, а прихований інтертекстуальний діалог підважує цілком офіціозні тези, висловлені експліцитно. The paper is the first part of a study on the poetics of intertext in Pavlo Zahrebelnyi’s novel “I, Bohdan”. The work by Zahrebelnyi vividly illustrates the difference between the intention of the author and the intention of the text. The writer’s self-commentaries were inevitably ideologically engaged, while the intention of the text, that is, the textual strategy of the novel, can be reconstructed. Special attention should be paid to the textual points where the senses are generated and tensions or contradictions between diff erent levels of the text emerge — especially those between direct utterance and intertextual subtext. Thus, the definition of the intention of the text is at the same time its deconstruction, in the Derridian sense of the word. The unambiguity of the ideological content of the novel is greatly complicated by the introduction of the direct and hidden quotations and allusions to the writers who lived and worked long aft er Khmelnytskyi’s time. These authors may be Ukrainian (Skovoroda, Shevchenko, Franko, Kotsiubynskyi, Tychyna, Sosiura), Russian (Pushkin, Akhmatova, Pasternak, Bakhtin), European and American (Mickiewicz, Faulkner, Churchill). The narrator of the novel is Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, a monument in the Kyiv square and at the same time a hetman who’s dying in 1657. The hero exists beyond time and at every point in time. Anachronistic quotations contribute to the creation of the image of the hetman as the embodiment of all the Ukrainian history and culture in the world context. The narrator sometimes enters into a dialogue with the authors of the original texts and may argue with them. Numerous (or even all) literary versions of Khmelnytskyi’s image, in the Polish and Ukrainian paradigms, the late populist and the socialist realist ones, are presented as dubious or simply false. The main objects of controversy are Sienkiewicz (as the author of the novel most hostile to the hetman) and Shevchenko (as the author most critical towards Khmelnytskyi in the Ukrainian tradition). Bohdan as the founder of the new Ukrainian nation is equal to Shevchenko as a historical figure and prophet; the narrator of the novel, although he disagrees with Shevchenko’s opinion, still cites it. The reader, in the end, must decide for himself whom he trusts more and for what reason. Since Shevchenko’s ruthless words are quoted in the first chapter of the novel, the rest should be read in this — extremely ambiguous — ideological perspective.

У статті зосереджено увагу на основних вимірах любові, представлених в інтелектуальному романі Є. Плужника «Недуга», окреслено соціокультурне підґрунтя порушеної у творі проблематики та висвітлено взаємозв’язок рефлексій про любов зі спробами осягнути особливості буття людини у сві- ті. Методологічну базу дослідження сформували праці з філософської та літературної антропології, психоаналізу та герменевтики. Незважаючи на ідеологічний контекст епохи, яка ставила під сумнів можливість кохання між представниками ворожих суспільних класів і право «нової» людини на любов, персонажі роману розмежовують любов-пристрасть, любов-дружбу, сімейну любов та справжню любов, готову визнавати Іншого в його інакшості. Вони також прагнуть збагнути науку життя, замислюються над власною ідентичністю та маркерами людської сутності. The primary aim of the paper is to clarify the main approaches to the philosophy of love, represented in the intellectual novel “The Desease” by Yevhen Pluzhnyk, to outline the sociocultural footing of the issues, raised in the work, as well as to bring to light the relationship of reflections on multidimensionality of love and the characters’ attempts to comprehend the peculiarities of human existence in the world. The methodological premises and theoretical frameworks for the research were provided by the studies on psychoanalysis, hermeneutics, philosophical and literary anthropology. While trying to understand the essence of love, the characters of Pluzhnyk’s novel, like the philosophers from different epochs, distinguish among love-passion, love-friendship, family love, which is developed in the matrimony, and ‘true love’ that is close to the divine one. The ‘true love’ is a willingness to sacrifice as well as realizing the uniqueness of other person; it motivates to feel responsibility for Other and to see him/her not from a selfish but from a values-based perspective. However, the relationships between the characters along with their reflections on love in the novel by Pluzhnyk are not an ordinary illustration of the different philosophical concepts. The writer also actualizes the ideological context of the 1920s and encourages his characters to think whether love between the representatives of the hostile social ‘classes’ is possible and whether the ‘new’ human has the right to love at all. Comprehension of the phenomenon of love in the novel “The Desease” is intertwined with the reflections on the identity of the person, on his/her internal crisis, provoked by the rationalistic approach to life, as well as on the peculiarities of the dialogue with the Other. The characters of the novel also seek to understand ‘the science of life’, to solve the problem of separating private and public spaces of existence, to grasp the contradistinction of the value positions ‘to take’, aimed at the self, and ‘to give’, which is laid in the basis of love and appears to be an important feature of the human entity.

Проаналізовано образ Василя Стуса в художньому фільмі Романа Бровка «Заборонений» (2019). З’ясовано, якими засобами режисер утілює психологічну структуру індивідуальності у стрічці для широкої глядацької аудиторії. Психологічний чинник кінематографічного образу ґрунтується на рисах характеру, поведінці, притаманній Стусові-людині: він схильний до експансивної реакції, непристосований до компромісів, самодостатній, сильної волі. Режисер працює як у формальній площині (принцип градації, протиставлення, кінематографічний засіб образу-переживання, загальний план), так і в змістовій (домислені епізоди й персонажі, закадрові читання віршів, сконденсований зміст мотто, уведення авторського тексту в новий контекст тощо). The paper reviews the image of Vasyl Stus in Roman Brovko’s feature film “The Proscribed” (“Zaboronenyi”, 2019). The researcher aims to find out how the director embodies the psychological structure of the writer’s personality in the film for a wide audience. To do this, the author of the paper uses interviews with the director, the leading actor, and contemporaries of Vasyl Stus, analyzing the feature film from the perspective of its form, content, and meaning. The members of the production team emphasized the reactions of the creative person to untruth and injustice; they focused on such traits of Stus’s character as being extremely honest, caring, and emotionally explosive. Stus’s contemporaries, watching the film first, noted the emotional side as successfully embodied on the screen. The psychological component of Vasyl Stus’s cinematographic personality is based on the character traits, reactions, and behavior inherent to real Stus: the protagonist is prone to impetuous reactions, not suited to compromises, self-sufficient, and strong-willed. To create such a psychological structure of Vasyl Stus’s character in “The Proscribed”, the director works both with the form (he uses the principles of gradation and opposition, the means of image-experience, and a wide shot) and content (imaginary episodes, reading poetry behind the scenes, condensed meaning of the epigraph, some fictional characters, the author’s text in a new context, etc.). These efforts give the opportunity to see the movie character of Vasyl Stus with his inherent emotional reactions (impetuous) and feelings (protest, anger, justice), moral and ethical guidelines (to give much, to be humane and do good), and the high level of self-awareness.

Стаття становить другу частину дослідження, у якому недописаний роман Богдана Ігоря Антонича «На другому березі» розглядається із перспективи генетичної критики як приклад авантексту, укладеного на основі чернеток, що фіксують процесуальність письма. На підставі рукопису проаналізовано не відображені у виданнях основні типи текстових змін як свідчення «поетики стану», що виводить письмо за межі дихотомій суб’єкта й об’єкта, Ероса й Танатоса, людського й не-людського — за рамки індивідуалізму і самої мови, у сферу інтерсуб’єктного та інтермедійного. Поступаючись розвитком дії супроти інтенсивності стану, проза Антонича свідчить про формування афективної поетики і нового типу модерної чуттєвості та відповідної практики письма. This is the second paper of the two-part study examining the ‘unwritten novel’ “On the Other Bank” by Bohdan Ihor Antonych, a notable Western Ukrainian writer of the interwar period. Known primarily for his poetry, Antonych did not finish this novel-in-progress, leaving behind only draft notes, that offer a glimpse into the very process of his writing. Analyzed from the perspective of genetic criticism, Antonych’s manuscripts are treated as an avant-text, demonstrating a ‘scenario of writing’ in the transition from the novel of action to the novel of state. In contrast to his image-based poetry Antonych’s prose rests on the technique of description. Depicting nature or the urban environment, the author conveys a certain emotional and psychological condition. Paying special attention to qualitative adjectives, he appeals to the sensory experience of the reader. Despite the fact that the plan of the novel indicates the main events of the plot, the author mainly captures the emotions of the characters. Dialogues also play an unusual role in the text, as their function is expressive rather than a communicative one. Since the dynamics of the text is based on emotional and psychological movement, and not on the sequence of events or judgments, it is considered to be an example of affective poetics in Ukrainian modern literature. Affect appears in Antonych’s text as force and tension. It shapes the human personality and at the same time challenges it. Affect goes beyond discursiveness and captures the body; its intensity is expressed through the voice and speed. Antonych’s characters share a common transpersonal experience in their childhood and a common object of desire aft er becoming adults. Moreover, the transfer of emotions into the sphere of interpersonal relations gives the affect not only a psychological but also an ethical dimension. Analyzing Antonych’s manuscript, the author of the paper focuses on the dynamics of writing, not on the one of the plot, and finds grounds for conclusions about the affective nature of Antonych’s prose. It is evident that in the ‘unwritten novel’ “On the Other Bank” Antonych depicts the modernist type of literary character as homo sentiens, who perceives the world in a subtle way and experiences it deeply.

Пропонована стаття розгортає можливі інтерпретаційні фокуси для вивчення тем «комунікації» та «порозуміння» поміж статями, взаємостосунків чоловіка і жінки у новелі «Грішниця» (1904) Леся Мартовича (1871—1916). Ці явища досліджуються за допомогою наратологічних, психоаналітичних та феміністичних методологічних стратегій, з урахуванням тенденцій текстуальної відкритості та рецептивної парадоксальності. Інтерпретація психологічних портретів персонажів відбувається у векторах поліфонічного текстуального простору реальності, яка, з одного боку, наснажена ідеологією патріархальності, а з іншого, — емансипованості жінки. The scholarly debate over the writer’s outlook and individual literary style of Les Martovych (1871—1916) is still relevant. The ironic mood of his works and its genesis, the psychological and cultural foundation of his writings, the vision of Martovych’s narration in the context of examining his psychological ground – this is what modern researchers, in particular, Roman Pikhmanets, Olena Hnidan, Oleh Ilnytskyi, and Hanna Marchuk, most oft en reflected on. Just as topical is the interpretation of the compositional and semantic level of the writer’s texts along with the study of the peculiarities of using linguistic and stylistic means for the realization of the author’s intention in the translations of his works into foreign languages. This paper focuses on the man-woman relationship in the short story “The Sinner” (1904) in terms of post-structural psychoanalytic, narratological, and feminist perspectives. Obvious is the gap between the notion of a woman as a feminine character and as a sociohistorical subject in a patriarchal world. The interpretation of the psychological portraits of the characters strives for defining the elusive nature of a reality that is driven by the ideology of patriarchy on the one hand, and the emancipation of women on the other. Using the method of ‘suture’, the paper demonstrates the process of creating female and male subjectivity at the level of narrative discourse. The findings may serve those who research the Ukrainian literary trends of the late 19th — early 20th centuries, peculiarities of the development of Ukrainian prose of the mentioned period in relation to the general European context, feminist-psychoanalytic discourse in literature, and the mechanisms of creating female and male images in prose works.

На основі зіставного аналізу тексту твору і джерел, залучених у процесі його написання, доведено, що образ гетьмана в романі спирається на передмодерну й романтичну історіографічні традиції, у яких зникала межа між вимислом і документальністю (що пояснює, зокрема, важливість «Історії Русів» та «Запорізької старовини» Ізмаїла Срезневського в інтертексті роману). Цілі сторінки є переказом-палімпсестом історичних праць, присвячених Хмельницькому, передовсім Миколи Костомарова та Михайла Грушевського. Поетика роману Загребельного поєднує соцреалістичні, модерністські й (прото)постмодерністські елементи, і звернення до первинних і вторинних джерел, використаних у тексті, дає змогу побачити принципову неоднозначність ідеологічного змісту твору. In the novel “I, Bogdan” ‘historical authenticity’ is achieved through intuitive, romantic penetration of the author/narrator into the ‘nation’s spirit’ — and through the citatory narrative on the verge of cento, which the narrator emphasizes time and again. The fictional, subjective image of the hetman is presented as the only true one. The author of the novel follows two historiographical traditions, within which the fiction is not just authentic but real and true — of course, if consistent with existing narratives. These are premodern and romantic traditions. Unsurprisingly, Zahrebelnyi is happy to use the texts created both in the premodern framework (fragments of “Cossack chronicles”) and in the framework of (pre)romanticism (“History of Ruthenians”; “Zaporozhian Antiquities” by Izmail Sreznevskyi). These texts are ‘created’ and not ‘falsified’, because for their authors the reconstruction of the possible was not falsification but only filling gaps. For the author of the novel “I, Bogdan”, as well as for the romantics, the criterion of truth is compliance with the national spirit. Researchers have repeatedly noted that the novel creates the combined voice of the ‘hero-author’: it is the voice of the people themselves, on whose behalf his representative can speak. Zahrebelnyi, when using historical sources, often turns to the palimpsest technique, rewriting or simply quoting without reference studies on Ukrainian history, especially by Mykola Kostomarov and Mykhailo Hrushevskyi, making certain ideological changes, and sometimes radically inverting the meaning of the quoted passages. Hidden intertext, therefore, may deny the explicit ideology of the text. It is obvious that the ‘encyclopedia of the model reader’ of the novel was much larger than the ‘encyclopedia’ of the empirical Soviet reader. So, in fact, the only possible ‘model reader’ was the author himself. This is a very modernist notion, and at the same time, the illusion of complete clarity on a superficial level moves Zahrebelnyi’s book closer to the poetics of postmodernism.

У статті подано невідомі сторінки творчої біографії Євгена Івановича Касяненка (1889—1937) — одного з піонерів українського авіабудування, перекладача, активного учасника громадсько-політичного і літературного руху 1910—1930-х років. Основою дослідження є реконструкція літературно-виробничих відносин між Є. Касяненком, Василем Елланом-Блакитним та Валер’яном Поліщуком, висвітлення їхніх поглядів щодо організаційних і концептуальних форм українського письменства. Аналіз ініційованих ними проєктів і полемік актуалізує питання про культурно-історичні витоки «Червоного ренесансу» та специфіку формування української літератури як пролетарської. The paper covers unknown pages of Yevhen Kasianenko’s creative activity. Yevhen Kasianenko (1889—1937) was one of the pioneers of Ukrainian aircraft construction, a translator, and an active participant in the socio-political and literary movement of the 1910s—1930s. The study reconstructs the literary and business relations between Yevhen Kasianenko, Vasyl Ellan-Blakytnyi, and Valerian Polishchuk. The author analyzes their views on organizational and conceptual forms of Ukrainian literature. The analysis of the projects and polemics initiated by the writers tackles the question of the cultural and historical origins of the ‘Red Renaissance’ and the specifical formation of the Ukrainian proletarian literature. This paper explores Yevhen Kasianenko’s involvement in the press of the Ukrainian People’s Republic period, his participation in the emergence of Ukrainian-language Soviet periodicals, the first associations of proletarian writers, and Ukrainian publishing houses, as well as his role in communication between Soviet writers and émigré artists. The study analyzes for the first time the criminal case against Kasianenko and outlines his extensive connections within the Ukrainian literary environment. Kasianenko was one of those whose activity the Russian Communist Party leadership used for Sovietization policies in Ukraine as well as for the Ukrainization of the Bolshevik policy. He contributed to legitimizing the party’s political practices and symbolic images. Kasianenko’s biography shows that in ideological, scholarly, and cultural aspects, the Soviet civilization project was not radically innovative, largely existing in the orbit of the pre-revolutionary socio-cultural movement.

Три поетичні книги початку 1990-х — «Нове літочислення», «Хресна дорога» та «Правда-мста» — включають відновлену ранню лірику й поеми автора-каторжанина. І. Гнатюк увів в українську поезію теми та проблематику, пов’язані з масовими злочинами сталінської тиранії, з націоналістичним рухом опору, із загрозами імперської агресії з Москви в час незалежності. Спираючись на класичну поетику в ліриці та великій епічній формі (сонети, балади, цикли, поеми), мистець створив новий експресивний тип ліричного героя — затятого й безкомпромісного мученика радянської каторги. Тому бездоказові оцінки Гнатюкової творчості як графоманської спростовуються прикладами його унікальної майстерності, вільного володіння словом. The poetry books by I. Hnatiuk, edited in independent Ukraine, are especially valuable due to the first publication of his poems written in prison. He appeared in front of the reader in his true poetic self, without distortion of censorship, only in the 1990s — in a kind of poetical trilogy beginning with the collection “New calculus of time” (Kyiv, 1990). Th ree poetry books from the early 1990s — “New calculus of time”, “Via Dolorosa” and “True Revenge” — contain the restored early lyrics and poems of the author prisoner. I. Hnatiuk introduced into Ukrainian poetry the topics and issues related to the crimes of Stalin’s tyranny, the national resistance movement, and the threats of imperial aggression from Moscow in the time of Ukrainian independence. Hnatiuk never announced any prophecies of the expected ‘happy future’ in the new Ukraine, although the collections had a distinct prophetic orientation. The poems of the 1980s and 1990s were also presented, including the cycles brought to life by the Chornobyl disaster. The poet perceived the man-made environmental catastrophe as the last ‘wrath of God’, ‘the deadly tornado’ of the atomic Apocalypse. The evident journalistic component of the three-volume collection requires deeper reading and study in the context of the post-Soviet literature. Based on the classical poetic means and great verse epic forms, the poet created a new expressive type of the lyrical character — the persistent and uncompromising martyr of the Soviet concentration camp. According to the author of the paper, the unsubstantiated evaluations of Hnatiuk’s works as graphomania can be easily refuted by examples of his unique mastery and free command of the word.

The study of the Ukrainian aspects of the European avant-garde movement of the first third of the twentieth century became possible with a radical reassessment of values in the late twentieth century. During this period, the term "Ukrainian avant-garde" appeared in Western European art history discourse. The emergence of such a term in Ukraine during the Soviet period was impossible, because creativity was viewed through the prism of socialist realism and nothing else. However, art researchers were aware of the national aspects of the avant-garde. In the Ukrainian academic discourse, the problem of the contribution of domestic artists to the development of the avant-garde begins to become relevant with the acquisition of state independence. The state-building process stimulated the revival of cultural processes and the emergence of scientific interest in the avant-garde. Researchers have studied the problem of conventional and authorial, philosophical and aesthetic foundations of the Ukrainian avant-garde, its artistic and stylistic features, creative and theoretical heritage of artists. For a period of time, avant-garde revolutionary art and political revolution in the first quarter of the twentieth century were united in a single burst of influence on the masses. Avant-garde art for some time became part of the revolutionary process. The Ukrainian paradigm is marked by a territorial feature, the affiliation of artists of eidetic creativity of folk self-expression. With the acquisition of independence, the Ukrainian avant-garde emerged from oblivion and organically entered the national artistic space and became part of Ukrainian art., Дослідження українських аспектів європейського авангардного руху першої третини ХХ століття стало можливим із докорінною переоцінкою цінностей наприкінці ХХ століття. У цей період у західноєвропейському мистецтвознавчому дискурсі виникає термін “український авангард”. Виникнення такого терміну в Україні у радянський період було неможливим, адже творчість розглядалася крізь призму соціалістичного реалізму і ніяк інакше. Проте, дослідники мистецтва були усвідомлені про національні аспекти авангарду. В українському академічному дискурсі проблема внеску вітчизняних митців до розвитку авангарду розпочинає бути актуальною з набуттям державної незалежності. Державотворчий процес стимулював відродження культуротворчих процесів та появу наукового інтересу до авангарду. Дослідниками вивчено проблему конвенціонального та авторського, філософсько-естетичні основи українського авангарду, його художньо-стильові особливості, творчий та теоретичних спадок митців. Певний період авангардна революційність в мистецтві та революційність політична першої чверті ХХ століття були поєднані у єдиному пориві впливу на народні маси. Мистецтво авангарду на певний час стало частиною революційного процесу. Українська парадигма авангарду позначена територіальною ознакою, приналежністю митців до ейдетичної творчості народного самовираження. З набуттям незалежності український авангард постав із забуття та органічно увійшов до національного художнього простору і став часткою українського мистецтва.

The 1990s represent one of the historical turning points in the character of Czech political partisanship. It brought an end to the existence of honorary political parties as a loose grouping of a narrow class of elites and triggered the beginning of well-organized communities with a solid, mass membership-based internal structure and expansion of their electoral potential by establishing interest affiliate organizations offering benefits to supporting voters. At the same time, the change in the parties’ character was accompanied by processes of political differentiation in Czech society as an expression of its modernization and desire to complete national emancipation and the creation of its statehood. The result was the creation of several new political parties and, at the same time, the creation of political camps, which became the foundation of the emergence of the Czech society pillar political structure. With a certain time lag, the processes of political differentiation in Czech society in the first decade of the 20th century were completed by efforts to form Czech professional political parties, comprised of the so-called old urban middle classes, i.e. tradesmen, craftsmen, and merchants. In the initial phase, their founders believed that they could promote their economic interests on the political scene through established civic and socialist political parties. However, quite quickly, the elites of small entrepreneurs abandoned this vision and began to seek to establish a professional trader’s political party. In Bohemia, three professional political parties were established in the short period between 1903 and 1909: the Trader’s Progressive and Independent Party in Bohemia, the Trader’s Party in Bohemia in the Czech Kingdom, and the Czechoslavonic Trader’s Party. These were honorary-type organizations or pre-party units that just started searching for their party identity. The failures of the traders’ parties in the elections to the Reich Council and the Landtag revealed a weakness in the cooperation tactics. They contributed to the transformation or the disappearance of said parties. The situation in the trader’s movement in Moravia was different. The Trader’s Party was formed here compared to Bohemia with a slight time lag, but its founders immediately began to form it as a mass political party. The Czechoslavonic Trader’s Party in Moravia, founded in 1908 in Prostějov, even though in the short period before the outbreak of World War I, it went through a building phase, is the first successful attempt to create a standard, classical political party in the Bohemian territory. This study reflects its efforts for internal consolidation and integration into the Bohemian party-political system of pre-war Moravia. &nbsp, Дев’яності роки ХІХ століття в історії чеської системи політичних партій – один з ключових періодів, протягом якого змінювався їх характер. Закінчився період існування партій нотаблів як вільного угрупування вузького класу еліт. Почали виникати добре організовані об’єднання з жорсткою внутрішньою структурою, які спиралися на масову членську базу та розширяли свій виборчий потенціал шляхом створення асоційованих організацій за інтересами, що пропонували вигоди й прихильним виборцям. Цю зміну характеру партій супроводжували процеси політичної диференціації чеського суспільства як вираження його модернізації та прагнення до повної національної емансипації та створення власної державності. В результаті з’явилася низка нових політичних партій і водночас утворилися політичні табори, які стали основою пілларізації чеського суспільства. З певною затримкою процеси політичної диференціації чеського суспільства в першому десятилітті ХХ століття завершилися зусиллями щодо формування станових політичних партій чеських т. зв. старих міських середніх прошарків — дрібних підприємців, ремісників, торговців. Спочатку їх засновники вважали, що свої економічні інтереси на політичній сцені вони просуватимуть через традиційні громадянські та соціалістичні політичні партії. Проте досить швидко еліти дрібних підприємців відмовились від цього бачення та почали докладати зусиль для створення станової політичної партії. За короткий період часу (1903 – 1909 рр.) в Богемії було створено три станові політичні партії: Партія прогресивних і незалежних чеських підприємців, Чеська партія підприємців у Королівстві Богемія та Партія чесько-слов'янських підприємців і торговців. Це були організації елітного типу або протопартійні утвори, які свою партійну ідентичність тільки шукали. Невдачі партій підприємців на виборах до Імперської Ради та земського парламенту виявили слабкість тактики співпраці та сприяли трансформації або припиненню існування згаданих партій. Ситуація в русі підприємців у Моравії була іншою. Станова політична партія підприємців тут сформувалася хоч і з невеликою затримкою порівняно з Богемією, проте засновники відразу ж почали створювати її як масову політичну партію. Політична партія чесько-слов'янських підприємців у Моравії, заснована в 1908 році в Простейові, незважаючи на те, що протягом короткого періоду перед початком світової війни перебувала у фазі будівництва, є першою успішною спробою створення стандартної, класичної політичної партії в чеському просторі. Дослідження відображає її зусилля щодо внутрішньої консолідації та інтеграції до чеської партійно-політичної системи довоєнної Моравії.

У статті розглянуто питання споживчих інтересів радянської людини на прикладі творів О. Ільченка «Збирачі туманів» і С. Батурина «Шизґара». Пояснено художні ідеї розвінчання міфів про добробут громадян СРСР, проаналізовано панораму повсякденного життя в умовах продовольчого дефіциту, простежено суголосність авторських інтерпретацій як достовірність змалювання пережитого. Зазначено, що відтворення сутності уніфікованої моделі «homo sovieticus» виявляє нікчемність і небезпечність тоталітарної системи, нівелює можливість ностальгійних «зітхань» за радянським минулим. Contemporary Ukrainian prose has been actively appealing to the memory of the Soviet past recently. Especially interesting is the literary reconstruction of everyday life that creates a background for demonstrating a specific type of ‘homo sovieticus’. A discussion on this large-scale and promising process has already started within literary studies. The paper deals with O. Ilchenko’s “Fog Pickers” and S. Baturyn’s “Shyzgara”, which represent the everyday life of Kyiv in the Soviet era. The focus is on the literary treatment of consumerism as a feature of a unified model representing the Soviet man. The researcher explains the ideas of debunking the myths about happy life in the USSR, analyzes the ways of creating the panoramic view of everyday life, traces the consistency of the authors’ interpretations that shows how accurately the experiences are depicted. The gastronomic routes of Kyiv residents, the methods of obtaining the foodstuffs, the social relationships established during purchases presented in the literary works are worth special attention. The writers are definitely critical regarding everyday living conditions in the recent past. They put characteristic features of the Soviet everyday life at the center of events, namely the lines in the stores of all kinds and their primitive range of products. Some Soviet euphemisms related to the food theme have been explained in the paper as well. The researcher comes to the conclusion that reconstruction of the everyday life of a Soviet man in the works by O. Ilchenko and S. Baturyn reveals the despicable nature and danger of the totalitarian system, shows the groundlessness of the nostalgic gasps for the Soviet Union. The literary representation of life in the USSR prompts one to reflect on the true values and uphold human dignity in a free state.

На підставі рукопису проаналізовано не відображені у виданнях основні типи текстових змін як свідчення «поетики стану», що виводить письмо за межі дихотомій суб’єкта й об’єкта, Ероса й Танатоса, людського й не-людського — за рамки індивідуалізму і самої мови, у сферу інтерсуб’єктного та інтермедійного. Поступаючись розвитком дії супроти інтенсивності стану, проза Антонича свідчить про формування афективної поетики і нового типу модерної чуттєвості та відповідної практики письма. This is the second paper of the two-part study examining the ‘unwritten novel’ “On the Other Bank” by Bohdan Ihor Antonych, a notable Western Ukrainian writer of the interwar period. Known primarily for his poetry, Antonych did not finish this novel-in-progress, leaving behind only draft notes, that offer a glimpse into the very process of his writing. Analyzed from the perspective of genetic criticism, Antonych’s manuscripts are treated as an avant-text, demonstrating a ‘scenario of writing’ in the transition from the novel of action to the novel of state. In contrast to his image-based poetry Antonych’s prose rests on the technique of description. Depicting nature or the urban environment, the author conveys a certain emotional and psychological condition. Paying special attention to qualitative adjectives, he appeals to the sensory experience of the reader. Despite the fact that the plan of the novel indicates the main events of the plot, the author mainly captures the emotions of the characters. Dialogues also play an unusual role in the text, as their function is expressive rather than a communicative one. Since the dynamics of the text is based on emotional and psychological movement, and not on the sequence of events or judgments, it is considered to be an example of affective poetics in Ukrainian modern literature. Affect appears in Antonych’s text as force and tension. It shapes the human personality and at the same time challenges it. Affect goes beyond discursiveness and captures the body; its intensity is expressed through the voice and speed. Antonych’s characters share a common transpersonal experience in their childhood and a common object of desire aft er becoming adults. Moreover, the transfer of emotions into the sphere of interpersonal relations gives the affect not only a psychological but also an ethical dimension. Analyzing Antonych’s manuscript, the author of the paper focuses on the dynamics of writing, not on the one of the plot, and finds grounds for conclusions about the affective nature of Antonych’s prose. It is evident that in the ‘unwritten novel’ “On the Other Bank” Antonych depicts the modernist type of literary character as homo sentiens, who perceives the world in a subtle way and experiences it deeply.

У статті в компаративному аспекті проаналізовано модифікацію молитви прослави «Радуйся, Маріє!» у поезії В. Вовк і П. Тичини. З’ясовано, що у Віри Вовк ця молитва має джерела в акафісті до Богородиці та модифікує його, зберігаючи ознаки акафісту (вірш «Радуйся!») або ж надаючи йому ознак куплетної форми («Небесна Синиця»). У П. Тичини звертання «Ой радуйся, Маріє» з вірша «Скорбна мати» відсилає до сцени Благовіщення і молитви «Ave, Maria» («Радуйся, Маріє, благодаті повна»), що є частиною молитви на розарію. Попри звертання «Радуйся», твір П. Тичини перейнятий скорботою. Тоді як у вірші В. Вовк «Успеніє», що розвиває тему вірша П. Тичини, домінує мотив радості. The paper comparatively analyzes the modification of the laudatory prayer “Rejoice, Mary!” in the poems by V. Vovk and P. Tychyna, The comparison helps to reveal the peculiarities of the authors’ styles in the modifications of the prayer and makes it possible to see the deep unity of emigrational and continental literature, The prayer of Vira Vovk has its sources in the akathist to the Mother of God. In the poem “Rejoice!”, the poetess retains the general structure of the akathist, modifying some details: she uses twelve lines instead of thirteen and keeps the address “Rejoice!” not in every line but only in odd numbers. In the poem “Celestial Tit”, the akathist acquires the features of a verse form, and the address “Rejoice” is present only in the first and ninth lines. However, the second strophes of the poems “Rejoice!” and “Heavenly Tit” give grounds to consider these texts as variants of the same work, The works by Vira Vovk show a combination of images being characteristic of the church akathist to the Mother of God (lilies, roses, universe of joy, virgin and mother) with individual authorial ones (heavenly forget-menot, four-leaf clover, sparkling star, chorale of winged, celestial tit). the address “Oh, rejoice, Mary!” from the poem “the Dolorous Mother” by P. Tychyna refers to the scene of the Annunciation and the prayer “Ave, Maria” (“Rejoice Mary, full of grace”), which is part of the rosary prayer. Despite the address “Rejoice”, P. Tychyna’s poem is imbued with sorrow, The events of the poem take place aft er the Crucifixion, before the Resurrection, The address “Oh, rejoice” is contrasted with the drama of a mother looking for a crucified son and also with Ukrainian history and the landscape. In V. Vovk’s piece “Dormition”, the events take place after the Resurrection, and therefore the Mother of God is not sad but smiling, full of joy; she merges with the landscape and not contrasts with it.

У спадщині Григора Тютюнника та персонажах його творів авторка с постерігає ознаки (окремі та у своєрідному поєднанні) іронічності в широкій градації — від легкого поблажливого насміху до сарказму, трагічної іронії, подекуди й трагіфарсу. Ідеться про оповідання «Комета», «Гвинт», «Поминали Маркіяна», «Грамотний», «Сміхо- та», «Нюра», «Чудасія», «Син приїхав», «Медаль», про повісті «День мій суботній», «Житіє Артема Безвіконного». One of the most dramatic writers of the 2nd half of the 20th century Hryhir Tiutiunnyk was remembered by all his contemporaries who worked in the cultural sphere as a person endowed with a keen sense of humor, rare wit, and unique artistry (in various genres, both dramatic and comedic). Th is paper is a reflection on how in the works by Hryhir Tiutiunnyk, killed by the totalitarian system in 1980, the well-known dominants of “love and pain” are deepened by irony, in all the immensity of its shades and meanings. The writer did not use any words from the political lexicon but instead unmasked the totalitarian system by depicting (mostly through apt expressions and details) the behavior and destinies of people oppressed or destroyed by it. His irony is mild, lenient, or even somewhat sympathetic. In the stories reviewed in the paper, namely “Screw”, “Niura”, “The Feast in Memory of Markiian”, “The Son Has Arrived”, the mentioned nuances of the means of irony are used in rather complex, sometimes weird combinations (“The Literate”, “Laughter”), revealing the ardent indifference of the author who tried (sometimes successfully) to pretend to be an outsider — an unworried or even superior narrator. In such works as “The Feast in Memory of Markiian” and “Medal”, the death itself or its obvious approach causes the appearance of tragicomic elements. However, in the latter, the tragic irony is not related to the character, but to the props of the stage action, in which the people resembling mannequins represent the village and district authorities and pretend to award a starving man as “the best animal breeder”. Some of Hryhir Tiutiunnyk’s characters, as in the short story “Oddity” and the story “My Saturday”, rise to a sarcastic mockery of oppressors: the specificity of the Soviet-communist officials lies in the fact that they don’t even realize the absurdity of their activities, which lack any humanistic principles. The literary world of the writer, despite its seeming simplicity, is extremely complex in terms of inner subtleties of thoughts, emotions, and conflicts.

Простежено особливості засвоєння жанру, виформування його в доробку авторки «Берестечка» — поетки особливого музичного чуття й ідіостильового заглиблення у сферу музики. Установлено, що баркарола стала однією з форм модернізації художнього мислення Ліни Костенко. У «Берестечку» поетка витворює особливу голо- сову поліфонію, в якій кожна зі змістоформ-конструктів модерного цілого (романний ліро-епос і баркарола) звучить і виокремлено, і взаємодоповнюючись, а партія героя-протагоніста зливається з «я» суб’єкта мовлення. The paper deals with a historical novel in verse by the celebrated modern Ukrainian writer Lina Kostenko, for the first time analyzing it totally in a synesthetic way — through the component of musicality (namely barcarole principle of poetic creativity). The folklore origins of barcarole in the world culture have been traced, as well as the peculiarities of the absorption of the genre by professional music and literature, especially Ukrainian. Formation of the genre in the creative work of the author of “Berestechko”, who is the poet of a special musical feeling, deserves special attention. Barcarole is one of the forms of modernity in the creative thinking of Lina Kostenko; it is a natural writer’s way of perceiving reality and transforming it into an aesthetic system of artistic work (both in poems and the novel in verse). Being inclined to poetically adopt chamber and solo musical genres, the poetess creates a special voice polyphony in “Berestechko”, where each sense construct of a modern unity, i. e. novel lyric epos and barcarole, sounds both separately and complementarily, and the part of a protagonist merges into ‘I’ of a speaker. The compositional function of barcarole in “Berestechko” is the modeling of a central character of the text. It is hetman Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, spiritually undermined by the recent defeat. The barcarole elements are used for constructing the author’s version of this failure and its consequences, which spread around Ukraine as circles on water; absorbing a soothing rhythm of a song, which can cure the soul with love; shaping the architectonics of the text in the form of ‘splashes’-’circles’ with polyfunctional titles and subtexts. In the genre structure of the novel, barcarole is essential both in the development of the theme and its stylistic implementation. In the unity of the work, one may notice ‘prelude’, the main part, and ‘postlude’, each part with its artistic sense. The images typical for a barcarole — water, boat, song, woman, love, etc. — are designed in accordance with the agrarian microcosm of the main character and its symbolic senses. Time flow, self-immersion, and love do not only spiritually heal hetman Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, but give his life a direction and endow his figure with grandeur. The neoromantic potential of barcarole and the novel in verse correspond well and join in the final coda about the unshakable courage and heroism of the Ukrainian warriors.

У статті досліджуються особливості текстуалізації в драмах Лесі Українки кодів культурно-історичних епох античності й середньовіччя, а також художнє втілення в античних та середньовічних образах і мотивах світоглядних рис європейського й українського модернізму. Розглядається специфіка переломлення характеристик українського буття межі XIX—XX ст. через призму названих епох у творах «Іфігенія в Тавріді», «Кассандра», «Оргія», «Руфін і Прісцілла» та «Камінний господар». Based on Lesia Ukrainka’s dramas “Iphigenia in Tavrida”, “Cassandra”, “The Orgy”, “Ruphin and Priscilla”, and “The Stone Master”, the paper highlights peculiarities of cultural and historical codes of the Antiquity and the Middle Ages in the writer’s works as well as literary manifestation of the world-view features of European and Ukrainian Modernism in the antique and medieval images and motifs. Lesia Ukrainka reconsidered the heritage of archaic and late Antiquity, Hellenistic period, Galilee at the time of Jesus, Early Christianity, and Medieval Spain. Each of these epochs has its own dichotomy of social and biological phenomena, parameters of the world model, and dominant fundamental points. Lesia Ukrainka’s dramas transform the material of various cultural epochs, providing polysemantic images that transfer the cosmos of a certain period into the neo-romantic and neo-classical system of images and symbols. In the dramas, the writer raised the issues recurrent in her works, such as love and sacrifice; beauty and ugliness; prophet, artist and ‘revolt of the masses’; reality and dream; good and evil; truth and benefit; nostalgia for chivalry; nostalgia for the Absolute; psychological and moral freedom and violence; spirit, soul, and body; spiritual nobility and the rule of brutes; nature and culture, etc. Numerous issues and characters, multifunctional ontological, cultural, and historical phenomena, cultural codes, symbols, and mythologems acquire an existential meaning in the author’s dramas fitting not only into various cultural contexts but also into the modern reconsideration of mythopoetics.

Статтю присвячено, можливо, ключовим подіям приватного життя Лариси Косач та Ольги Кобилянської. Ідеться про їхні взаємини із чоловіками, зокрема стосунки (знайомство, дружба й любов) із Сергієм Мержинським та Осипом Маковеєм. Досвід поведінки, емоційних та чуттєвих переживань українських жінок модерного часу розкрито в зіставних ракурсах. Такий підхід зумовлено як особливим духовносестринським зв’язком Лариси та Ольги, так і схожими до певного часу етапами переживання любовного почуття. Акцент зроблено на «історії» Л. Косач, яку «підсвічує», тобто пояснює і навіть дублює, «історія» її подруги. The paper highlights the key events of the private life of Larysa Kosach and Olha Kobylianska. It focuses on their communication and relations with men (acquaintance, friendship, and love), in particular Serhii Merzhynskyi and Osyp Makovei. The practice of behavior, the emotional and sensual experience of the Ukrainian women from the modern era have been revealed in a comparative aspect. Th is approach is determined by the special spiritual and sisterly connection between Larysa and Olha, as well as similar stages of experiencing the love feeling. The emphasis is made on the ‘history’ of L. Kosach, which is explained and even duplicated in the ‘history’ of Olha Kobylyanska. A general shaping of the writers’ personalities has been also considered comparatively. The cultural, psychological, and gender aspects in Ukraine of the late 19th and early 20th centuries had to be taken into account. The typology of both personalities has been traced from the time of their adolescence till their adulthood. The author of the paper pays special attention to the social norms as the oldest way to keep a woman within her nature as it was imagined. The traumatic experience of such social representation and the ways of addressing the issue within literary and autobiographical works are highlighted as well. The problem of expressing oneself is an important psychobiographical factor here. All private and public profiles related to human individuality, female nature, and creative consciousness are worth taking a deeper look at. The break up with the authorities, being a dominant feature for these women, is important for each of the mentioned manifestations of personalities and their integrity. The researcher concludes that biographical material, when properly structured, opens up new perspectives for those focused on the life and creative paths of the famous Ukrainian female writers.

Стаття присвячена феномену божевілля в українській літературі першої половини ХХ ст. Аналізуються ідейно-естетичні тенденції, пов’язані з осмисленням феномену божевілля, з’ясовуються його функціональні особливості, художньо-символічне й ідейно-політичне значення, наголошується на типологічних збігах у потрактуванні божевілля як теми і сюжету, проводяться паралелі між психологічною атмосферою тоталітарного світу і художніми інтерпретаціями божевілля. До аналізу залучені різні за жанром, стилем і хронологією твори, у яких тема божевілля набуває ідеологічно забарвленого й символічно значущого змісту. The paper focuses on the madness as a theme and plot in Ukrainian literature of the 1st half of the 20th century. The researcher analyzes ideological and aesthetic tendencies associated with the understanding of the madness phenomenon, clarifies its functional features, symbolic and ideological significance, and emphasizes the connection between the psychological atmosphere of the totalitarian reality and literary interpretations of madness. The analysis involves works of different genres, styles, and dates of writing in which the theme of madness acquires ideologically engaged and symbolically significant content. In “Sanatorium Zone” by M. Khvylovyi the madness phenomenon is associated with the problems of split personality and suicide. It may be explained in a modernist context, as a reflection of the internally conflicting nature of a man, incapable of changing the existing world or getting adjusted to it. In the tragicomedy “People’s Malakhiy”, M. Kulish introduced the idea of madness into the complex sociopolitical context of the soviet reality which he revealed in various forms (from mythological to social-political) using satirical and grotesque images, philosophical generalization, etc. An episode of madness in the novel “The Garden of Gethsemane” by I. Bahrianyi emphasizes the anomality of the soviet world which is symbolized by the punishment cell and characterized as a “conveyor belt for dismantling human souls”. The story of the romantic poet Hölderlin in the novel by V. Domontovych is socially and politically conditioned. It reveals the state of a man and the world in a difficult transitional era. In “The Enameled Bowl”, Domontovych elaborates the theme of illness through the idea of the lack of consistency between the internal and external and understands it as an artistic convention that marks the absurdity of the world. T. Osmachka in his prose was especially focused on the theme of madness. He was interested in mental disorders both as a form of the character’s self-awareness and as a clinical story. The mythological and ideological image of a mentally ill man, reflecting a creative person subjected to repression and persecution, is a symbol of his own biography. In general, the changes in the interpretation of mental disorders are associated with the renewal of the modernist poetics and caused by the writers’ attempts to clarify the connection between the external and internal.

Три поетичні книги початку 1990-х — «Нове літочислення», «Хресна дорога» та «Правда-мста» — включають відновлену ранню лірику й поеми автора-каторжанина. І. Гнатюк увів в українську поезію теми та проблематику, пов’язані з масовими злочинами сталінської тиранії, з націоналістичним рухом опору, із загрозами імперської агресії з Москви в час незалежності. Спираючись на класичну поетику в ліриці та великій епічній формі (сонети, балади, цикли, поеми), мистець створив новий експресивний тип ліричного героя — затятого й безкомпромісного мученика радянської каторги. Тому бездоказові оцінки Гнатюкової творчості як графоманської спростовуються прикладами його унікальної майстерності, вільного володіння словом. The poetry books by I. Hnatiuk, edited in independent Ukraine, are especially valuable due to the first publication of his poems written in prison. He appeared in front of the reader in his true poetic self, without distortion of censorship, only in the 1990s — in a kind of poetical trilogy beginning with the collection “New calculus of time” (Kyiv, 1990). Three poetry books from the early 1990s — “New calculus of time”, “Via Dolorosa” and “True Revenge” — contain the restored early lyrics and poems of the author prisoner. I. Hnatiuk introduced into Ukrainian poetry the topics and issues related to the crimes of Stalin’s tyranny, the national resistance movement, and the threats of imperial aggression from Moscow in the time of Ukrainian independence. Hnatiuk never announced any prophecies of the expected ‘happy future’ in the new Ukraine, although the collections had a distinct prophetic orientation. The poems of the 1980s and 1990s were also presented, including the cycles brought to life by the Chornobyl disaster. The poet perceived the man-made environmental catastrophe as the last ‘wrath of God’, ‘the deadly tornado’ of the atomic Apocalypse. The evident journalistic component of the three-volume collection requires deeper reading and study in the context of the post-Soviet literature. Based on the classical poetic means and great verse epic forms, the poet created a new expressive type of the lyrical character — the persistent and uncompromising martyr of the Soviet concentration camp. According to the author of the paper, the unsubstantiated evaluations of Hnatiuk’s works as graphomania can be easily refuted by examples of his unique mastery and free command of the word.

У статті здійснено спробу комплексного аналізу біблійної основи роману Л. Мосендза «Останній пророк». Її інтерпретацію розглянуто на трьох рівнях: сюжетному, образному і стилістичному. Висвітлено сюжетний паралелізм роману і біблійного тексту. Визначено особливості авторської рецепції першоджерела: психологізацію, каузальну мотивацію фактів, заповнення «змістових лакун» оніричними візіями та історичними екскурсами. Охарактеризовано образи голов них героїв (Елісеби, Єгоханана) та наведено їхні старо- й новозавітні прообрази. Окреслено стилістичну специфіку твору: використання художніх засобів Святого Письма, цитат, алюзій, сакральної лексики, антропонімів, топонімів, афоризмів. The paper deals with the biblical prototext in L. Mosendz’s novel “The Last Prophet”. Th is work focuses on the figure of John the Baptist making the most full coverage of the prophet’s personality in Ukrainian literature. Besides the historical sources, the novel is based on the ideological and aesthetic pattern of the Holy Scripture. However, the canonical text has been significantly rethought. The specifics of interpreting the biblical prototext in L. Mosendz’s novel have not yet been the subject of special research, although many scholars paid attention to the biblical basis of the work. Therefore, the purpose of the present paper is to highlight the peculiarities of the biblical prototext embodied in the novel “The Last Prophet”. The analysis of the plot, figurative and stylistic levels was necessary for achieving this goal. At the plot level, the common and distinctive features of the biblical and fictional stories of the John the Baptist’s life have been indicated. The distinctive features appeared to be more numerous as the text of the novel complements rather than repeats the prototext (the Gospel of Luke). Psychologization, the scholarly motivation of events, the manner of filling “semantic gaps” with both oneiric visions and historical narrations are the specific features in reproducing the biblical story. The main characters of the work Jehohanan and Elizabeth, unlike original biblical characters, are endowed with portrait characteristics and shown in the dynamics of age and spiritual growth. Creating them, the author combines the Old and New Testament prototypes: Eliseba — Sarah, the Mother of God; Jehohanan — David, Elijah, Isaiah, Moses, and Messiah. In this context, the figure of Elizabeth appears as a generalized image of the Mother, and the figure of Jehohanan — as a common image of the Prophet. The sacred vocabulary, biblical anthroponyms, toponyms, aphorisms, stylistic figures of inversion, amplification, gradation, etc. form the stylistic level of implementing the aesthetic means of the Holy Scripture. Some biblical quotations are given as poetically modified and emotionally characterized by the writer. The biblical prototext secures ideological and aesthetic integrity for the novel but doesn’t give the plot a strict direction. Although deeply rooted in the Holy Scripture, the novel by Mosendz is a completely independent work on the search for values of a man, people, and humanity.

The purpose of the article. The article analyses the artistic features of the ceramic designs of the individual parts of the entrance of the groups of the multi-stories buildings, in the experimental buildings of the left bank of Kyiv in 1970-1975. For example, the street A. Solovyanenko (former str. О. Boychenko), 4, 6, 16 on the Pіvnіchno-Brovarsky area. Methodology. The complex approach of the researchers on the theme provided a combination of the following scientific methods: analytical – for studying of a condition of research; system – for the study of selected monuments, archival and literary sources; comparative-typological – to describe ceramoplastics and divide it into groups; comparative analysis – to attribute these works and find analogies, determine authorship and dating; art analysis – to highlight the artistic and stylistic features and outline certain stylistic features of the works. Scientific novelty. The author for the first time introduced into scientific circulation a small group of works of exterior architectural ceramics of the Kyiv Experimental Workshop, headed by Nina Fedorova. Conclusions. The decors of the three houses differ in techniques and colors: polychrome painting and monochrome bas-relief. The artistic, stylistic and comparative typological analysis of the ceramic tiles, the archival and literary sources allowed to determine the authorship of artistic works N. Fedorova and A. Sharay. The polychrome paints ceramoplastics used in the decoration of the first two houses are innovative combinations of glazes and prefabricated enamel of N. Fedorova, while the rejection of polyphony color and graphic decorativeness underlined the details. The phyto and ornithomorphic motifs in the compositions were sometimes combined with abstract forms, in particular dots, circles, curves, spirals, etc. Small and large figure compositions were a kind of stylization of Ukrainian Folk Arts, the revival of the traditions of which were the creative credos of the workshops. In addition, the influence of iconography and stylistics of medieval Iranian arts were revealed in some images. The variant monochrome bas-relief ceramoplastics used in the decorations of the third house has not a contoured chiaroscuro modeling of A. Sharay. A modular grid was used in the construction of the ornamental compositions of the groups’ inputs. Curvilinear spiral motifs find analogies in works of art of the Bronze Ages and Sarmatian times, from archaeological excavations in Ukraine; floral ornament – has some borrowings from medieval stone carvings in the architecture of Georgia., Мета дослідження. У статті проаналізовано художні особливості керамічного оформлення окремих частин вхідних груп багатоповерхових будинків в експериментальній забудові Лівого берега Києва 1970-1975-го рр. на прикладі вул. А. Солов’яненка (колишня О. Бойченка), 4, 6, 16 на Північно-Броварському масиві. Методологія дослідження. Комплексний підхід дослідження теми передбачив поєднання наступних наукових методів: аналітичного – для вивчення стану дослідження; системного – для опрацювання обраних пам’яток, архівних та літературних джерел; порівняльно-типологічного – для опису керамопластики та поділу її на групи; порівняльного аналізу – для атрибуції цих творів та віднайдення аналогій, визначення авторства та датування; мистецтвознавчого аналізу – для висвітлення художньо-стильових прикмет та окреслення певних стилістичних особливостей творів. Наукова новизна. Автором вперше введено до наукового обігу невелику групу творів екстер’єрної архітектурної кераміки київської Експериментальної майстерні, на чолі якої стояла Ніна Федорова. Висновки. Декор трьох будинків різниться за технікою і колоритом: поліхромний розпис і монохромний барельєф. Художньо-стилістичний та порівняльно-типологічний аналіз керамічних плиток, архівні та літературні джерела дозволили визначити авторство художників Н. Федорової та Г. Шарай. Поліхромна розписна керамопластика в оздобленні двох перших будинків (Н. Федорова) – це новаторське поєднання полив та збірчастих емалей, відмова від колористичної поліфонії та графічно-декоративна прокресленність деталей. Фіто- та орнітоморфні мотиви у композиціях подекуди поєднано з абстрактними формами, зокрема крапками, колами, кривульками, спіралями тощо. Дрібно і крупнофігурні композиції – це своєрідна стилізація під українське народне мистецтво, відродження традицій якого було творчим кредо майстерні. Окрім того, в окремих образах виявлено вплив іконографії та стилістики середньовічного мистецтва Ірану. Варіантна монохромна барельєфна керамопластика, що використана в декорі третього будинку (Г. Шарай), має контурне світлотіньове моделювання. У побудові орнаментальних композицій вхідних груп використано модульну сітку. Криволінійні спіралеподібні мотиви знаходять аналогії у творах мистецтва доби бронзи та сарматського часу, з археологічних розкопок на теренах України; квітковий орнамент має окремі запозичення з середньовічного різьблення по каменю в архітектурі Грузії.

The authors carried out a historiographical review of the development of legal education of officers in higher military education institutions of Ukraine in the twentieth century in terms of modern historical and pedagogical science.The article clarifies the concepts related to the organization of legal education of officers in higher military educationalinstitutions of the USSR and independent Ukraine. It was found that in the period under study laid the foundation for further development of the modern system of domestic military education.The authors analyzed a set of studies on the legal education of officers, the degree of scientific development of the problem of legal education in higher military school in Ukraine and identified areas for its study. The authors found that representatives of various fields of scientific knowledge (history, philosophy, law and pedagogy) studied certain aspects related to the legal education of officers in higher military educational institutions. Such as the systematization of the experience of officer training; pedagogy and psychology of higher military school; problems of development of the modern system of military education in Ukraine, humanitarianization and technological aspects of personalityoriented training of military specialists with higher education; content and structure of the process of legal training of the contingent in military educational institutions; legal regulation of the military education system.The article offers a classification of scientific works related to this issue according to: the moment of their creation (modern works and published in the period under study); origin (Soviet scientific works and published in independent Ukraine and the countries of the former USSR); purpose (those that reveal the peculiarities of maintaining general discipline in the army and are devoted to issues of team training); subject (legal education of officers as an element of professional training and in the context of rulemaking of public authorities and military administration.).It was found that despite the appeal of some scholars to certain aspects of the formation of legal education of military officers in Ukraine, this problem has not been the subject of a separate scientific study.&nbsp, Авторами здійснено історіографічний огляд розвитку правової освіти офіцерів у закладах вищої військової освіти України в ХХ столітті з погляду сучасної історикопедагогічної науки. У статті уточнено поняття, пов’язані з організацією правової освіти офіцерів у вищих військових навчальних закладах СРСР та незалежної України. Зокрема, з’ясовано, що саме в досліджуваний період закладалося підґрунтя для подальшої розбудови сучасної системи вітчизняної військової освіти.Проаналізовано сукупність досліджень, присвячених правовій освіті офіцерських кадрів, ступінь наукової розробленості проблеми правової освіти у вищій військовій школі України, визначено напрями її вивчення. Встановлено, що представниками різних галузей наукового знання (історії, філософії, права та педагогіки) досліджувалися окремі аспекти, пов’язані із правовою освітою офіцерів у вищих військових навчальних закладах (систематизація досвіду підготовки офіцерських кадрів; педагогіка і психологія вищої військової школи; проблеми розвитку сучасної системи військової освіти в Україні, зокрема її гуманітаризація й технологічні аспекти особистісно орієнтованої підготовки військових фахівців з вищою освітою; зміст та структура процесу правової підготовки контингенту у військовонавчальних закладах; нормативноправове регулювання діяльності системи військової освіти).Запропоновано класифікацію наукових праць, що стосуються цієї проблематики відповідно до: моменту їх створення (сучасні праці та видані у досліджуваний період); походження (радянські наукові праці та видані в незалежній Україні й країнах колишнього СРСР); цільового призначення (такі, що розкривають особливості підтримання загальної дисципліни у військах та присвячені питанням підготовки командних кадрів); предмета (правова освіта офіцерів як елемент професійної підготовки та в контексті нормотворчості органів державної влади та військового управління.).З’ясовано, що попри звернення окремих учених до тих чи інших аспектів становлення правової освіти військовослужбовців в Україні, ця проблема не була предметом окремого наукового дослідження.

Мета дослідження – схарактеризувати творчо-організаційну діяльність провідних режисерів Сєвєродонецька у ХХ ст. Методологія дослідження. У процесі дослідження використано такі методи: історичний – для осмислення постатей О. Бірюстюкова, О. Шмаля та О. Олександрова в театральному мистецтві Сєвєродонецька; історико-біографічний – для аналізу контексту епохи та естетико-художніх векторів часу, що впливали на формування художніх підходів означених митців; компаративно-типологічний – для диференційованого порівняння творчого доробку режисерів. Наукова новизна. Уперше систематизовано та аналітично осмислено творчо-організаційну діяльність О. Бірюстюкова, О. Шмаля та О. Олександрова в контексті еволюції театрального мистецтва Сєвєродонецька у ХХ ст. Висновки. Сєвєродонецький народний театр під орудою О. Бірюстюкова виконував не тільки соціокультурні, але й освітньо-виховні функції для містян. Творчо-організаційна діяльність О. Шмаля стала сучасною імплементацією принципу «об’єктивного мистецтва» Г. Гурджиєва, зокрема через упровадження авторської методики роботи з акторами. Режисура О. Олександрова збагатила палітру театрального життя Сєвєродонецька своєю епатажністю та авангардизмом. Загалом відносно коротка історія розвитку театрального мистецтва Сєвєродонецька свідчить про те, що динаміку цього процесу визначила тенденція, яка характерна і для загальнонаціональних процесів становлення українського театрального життя: від самодіяльних його форм до професійних. Аналіз останніх свідчить про їхній активний розвиток завдяки використанню нових режисерських підходів, що сприяли зростанню акторської майстерності колективів і збагаченню репертуарної палітри щодо відродження національних культурних традицій. Режисерські пошуки та організаційно-творча діяльність О. Бірюстюкова, О. Шмаля та О. Олександрова стали вагомим внеском у розвиток театрального мистецтва Сєвєродонецька у ХХ ст. – воно стрімко та різновекторно розвивалося від локального аматорського театрального колективу однодумців до провідного регіонального професійного театрально-видовищного закладу культури., Цель исследования – охарактеризовать творческо-организационную деятельность ведущих режиссеров Северодонецка в ХХ в. Методология исследования. В процессе исследования использованы следующие методы: исторический – для осмысления фигур А. Бирюстюкова, А. Шмаля и О. Александрова в театральном искусстве Северодонецка; историко-биографический – для анализа контекста эпохи и эстетико-художественных векторов времени, влияющих на формирование художественных подходов указанных художников; компаративно-типологический – для дифференцированного сравнения творчества режиссеров. Научная новизна. Впервые систематизирована и аналитически осмыслена творческо-организационная деятельность А. Бирюстюкова, А. Шмаля и О. Александрова в контексте эволюции театрального искусства Северодонецка в ХХ в. Выводы. Северодонецкий народный театр под руководством А. Бирюстюкова выполнял не только социокультурные, но и образовательно-воспитательные функции. Творческо- организационная деятельность А. Шмаля стала современной имплементацией принципа «объективного искусства» Г. Гурджиева, в частности с помощью внедрения авторской методики работы с актерами. Режиссура О. Александрова обогатила палитру театральной жизни Северодонецка своей эпатажностью и авангардизмом. В общем относительно короткая история развития театрального искусства Северодонецка свидетельствует о том, что динамику данного процесса определила тенденция, присущая и общенациональным процессам становления украинской театральной жизни: от самодеятельных его форм до профессиональных. Анализ последних свидетельствует об их активном развитии благодаря использованию новых режиссерских подходов, способствующих росту актерского мастерства коллективов и обогащению репертуарной палитры в направлении возрождения национальных культурных традиций. Режиссерские поиски и организационно- творческая деятельность А. Бирюстюкова, А. Шмаля и О. Александрова стали весомым вкладом в развитие театрального искусства Северодонецка в ХХ в. – оно стремительно и разновекторно развивалось от локального любительского театрального коллектива единомышленников к ведущему региональному профессиональному театрально-зрелищному учреждению культуры., The purpose of the research is to characterize the creative and organizational activities of the leading directors of Severodonetsk in the twentieth century. Oleksandrov in the theater art of Severodonetsk; historical and biographical are to analyze the context of the epoch and aesthetic and artistic vectors of time, which influenced the formation of artistic approaches of these artists; comparative-typological is for differentiated comparison of creative work of directors. Scientific novelty. For the first time the creative and organizational activities of O. Biryustyuk, O. Shmaly and O. Oleksandrov have been systematized and analytically analyzed in the context of the evolution of Severodonetsk theater art in the XX century. Conclusions. The Severodonetsk People's Theater under the direction of O. Biryustyuk performed not only socio-cultural but also educational and educational functions for the locals. O. Shmal's creative and organizational activity became a modern implementation of G. Gurdjiev's principle of "objective art", in particular through the introduction of the author's method of working with actors. Director O. Alexandrov enriched the palette of the theatrical life of Severodonetsk with his epithet and avant-gardism. On the whole, the relatively short history of the development of the Severodonetsk theater art shows that the dynamics of this process have been determined by a tendency that is characteristic of national processes of the Ukrainian theatrical life formation: from amateur forms to professional ones. The analysis of the latter testifies to their active development through the use of new directorial approaches that contributed to the growth of the acting skills of the collectives and the enrichment of the repertoire palette for the revival of national cultural traditions. Directed searches and organizational and creative activity of O. Biryustyukova, O. Shmal and O. Oleksandrov made a significant contribution to the theater art development of Severodonetsk in the XX century and it has evolved rapidly and multifaceted from a local amateur theater group of like-minded people to a leading regional professional theater and entertainment institution of culture.

У статті досліджено довголітню непросту історію стосунків українського літературознавця, критика, журналіста, письменника Михайла Рудницького з Науковим товариством ім. Шевченка у Львові, зокрема, з окремими членами Філологічної секції Товариства. Ці стосунки переросли у тривале полемічне протистояння, зумовлене різним розумінням завдань гуманітаристики. Ідеться про дебати в Галичині навколо т. зв. скрипниківського правопису, про історію створення Української загальної енциклопедії. Уперше публікуються два листи М. Рудницького до тогочасного заступника голови НТШ В. Левицького. The paper highlights the relationship between the Ukrainian literary critic, journalist, and writer Mykhailo Rudnytskyi and the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Lviv, namely the members of its Philological department. The continuous opposition in these relations was rooted in a different understanding of tasks that might be considered as proper for humanities. In particular, the paper analyses the reasons that prompted М. Rudnytskyi to negatively assess К. Studynskyi’s activity in language and orthographic issues. Rudnytskyi considered the language politics of К. Studynskyi to be amateurish, out-of-date, and incongruous with the contemporary academic requirements and public level of Society. The paper also deals with a theme of debates in Halychyna around Skrypnyk’s orthography of 1929 and the active voice of Mykhailo Rudnytskyi on this issue. Another subject of the paper is the history of the Ukrainian General Encyclopaedia (1930—1933). Th e scholar contributed to this project as one of the editors. Here the paper focuses on Mykhailo Rudnytskyi’s views concerning the Encyclopedic area in particular and the state of Ukrainian academic studies on the whole, as well as the prospects of their development. Th e paper’s author aims to clarify the position of the scholar regarding the classic ‘canon’ of literature and methodology of criticism and evaluation. Despite different opinions and confrontation, in 1935 M. Rudnytskyj became a member of the Philological Section of the Shevchenko Scientific Society. Two letters of Mykhailo Rudnytskyi to the vice-chairman of Shevchenko Scientific Society Volodymyr Levytskyi are published for the first time.

У статті проаналізовано структуру літературознавчого мислення знакового українського критика доби раннього модернізму Миколи Євшана. Дослідник ураховує еволюційність світогляду М. Євшана та відштовхується від специфіки ідеології (як суспільного світогляду), аксіології та філософсько-естетичних домінант, котрі безпосередньо зумовили методологічну свідомість літератора. Так постає доволі цілісна, хоча й не до кінця розбудована структура, утворена шістьма основними інтерпретаційними ідеями: естетизмом, індивідуалізмом, соціологізмом, психологізмом, віталізмом та націєцентризмом. Mykola Yevshan was a celebrated Ukrainian critic of the early modernism era. The paper aims to outline the structure of his critical thinking, taking into account the evolution of the author’s worldview. The study is based on the specifics of ideology (as social worldview), axiology, philosophical and aesthetic dominants, which directly caused the methodological consciousness of the author. Thus, one may observe that M. Yevshan’s interpretive consciousness was rather integral but at the same time evolutionary, not fully constructed (considering the premature death), and not free of some inconsistencies. It is formed by six basic elements (and many secondary, auxiliary ones): aestheticism, individualism, sociologism, psychologism, vitalism, natiocentrism. The first (pre-war) period is marked with the dominance of the ‘esto-psychological’ type of interpretation (concentrated around the concept of aestheticism as a methodological key), while in the second (military and revolutionary) period the national philosophical interpretation, structured by the national imperative and intensified by the methodological principles of the national idealism, voluntarism, historicism (historiosophy), axiology, ideologism, psychologism, ethics, etc., prevails. The researcher doesn’t present his reflections as final and exhaustive, hoping, however, that they make two things obvious. Firstly, there is a need for more thorough and large-scale studies of Mykola Yevshan’s interpretive consciousness and thinking. Secondly, M. Yevshan should be properly presented in the history of the Ukrainian hermeneutical tradition; his aesthetic and national philosophical ideas need adequate verification and actualization in modern humanities, especially in literary studies.

Вивчення мистецької спадщини і творчого повсякдення 1918 року суттєво доповнює біографії низки українських письменників і коригує уявлення про вітчизняний літературний процес загалом. Велика кількість ідей, тем, творчих пошуків цього часу стали прологом до культурного діалогу наступних років, будучи водночас закоріненими в дореволюційний мистецький розвиток. Попри складну політичну ситуацію, 1918 рік позначений не лише активною творчою діяльністю, а й повсякчасними спробами унормувати триб мистецького життя відповідно до правових законів і комерційної логіки. Як приклад, авторка статті реконструює деякі аспекти театрального й літературного життя 1918 року, що висвітлювалися на сторінках київської щоденної газети «Відродження» й у таких періодичних виданнях, як «Робітнича газета», «Нова рада», «Народна воля» та ін. Головну увагу приділено публікаціям Якова Савченка, Леся Курбаса, Михайля Семенка, а також полеміці між представниками Молодого театру, Театральної ради, військового товариства «Батьківщина». Studying the artistic heritage and creative life in 1917—1919 significantly complements the biographies of many Ukrainian writers and influences the usual perceptions of the Ukrainian literary process overall. Against the backdrop of this period, the proletarian cultural conception no longer seems to be all-inclusive. After all, a great number of ideas, themes, and creative pursuits of 1917—1919 became a prologue to the cultural dialogue of the following years, being at the same time rooted in pre-revolutionary artistic development. For the Soviet political and cultural memory the establishment of Ukrainian statehood in 1917—1919 becomes a traumatic memory for a long time. As the present paper shows, the process over the Union of Liberation of Ukraine (SVU) in 1929—1930 was a perversion of the solemn action in honor of the short-lived triumph of the Directory of the Ukrainian People’s Republic in 1918, and in general became the quintessence of the political and symbolic delegitimization of the ‘Petliurian’ and ‘Hetmanian’ history. Despite the difficult political situation, 1918 was marked not only by vibrant creative life, but also by the daily attempts to normalize the course of artistic activity in accordance with legal laws and commercial logic. As an example, the author of the paper reconstructs some aspects of the theatrical and literary life of 1918, which were covered on the pages of the Kyiv daily newspaper “Vidrodzhennia” and also such periodicals as “Robitnycha Hazeta”, “Nova Rada”, “Narodna Volia”, etc. The paper focuses on the publications by Yakiv Savchenko, Les Kurbas, Mykhail Semenko and public polemics between representatives of “Molodyi Teatr”, “Teatralna Rada”, and the Military Society “Batkivshchyna”.

Стаття присвячена поезії Тодося Осьмачки, увага сфокусована на мотиві самотності у віршах зі збірки «Китиці часу». Дослідниця аналізує художній текст та інтерпретує його екзистенціальні смисли. Самотність людини в поезії Т. Осьмачки викликана історичними подіями, еміграцією, відсутністю друга й коханої. Філософські висловлювання поета окреслюють сутність самотності людини в її унікальному індивідуальному існуванні. Наведено положення із праць філософів М. Гайдеґґера, Х. Ортеги-і-Гассета, Г. Марселя, які допомагають витлумачити художній текст Т. Осьмачки. Діалог між поезією й екзистенціальною філософією розкриває значення художніх образів і виявляє специфіку мистецтва. Визначено риси індивідуального стилю Т. Осьмачки як автора філософської лірики. The paper deals with the works by the Ukrainian poet Todos Osmachka (1895—1962). Attention is focused on the motive of loneliness in the poems from the collection “The Tassels of Time” (1953). Taking into account the memories of the poet’s contemporaries, the researcher analyzes the texts and interprets their existential meanings. The poems contain both individual facts of human life and philosophical generalizations. The loneliness of T. Osmachka’s lyrical character is caused by historical events, emigration, the absence of friends and his beloved one. The hero is an artist, so he needs a reader who can understand and feel his work. The poet expresses feelings of an emigrant writer who left his unhappy occupied country. The poems depict the author’s life among people who are strangers for him in terms of spirit. The poet needs loneliness for his creative work, and it is high loneliness of spirit. Osmachka’s philosophical statements make sense of the human solitude as a feature of unique individual existence. The researcher cites the works of philosophers M. Heidegger, J. Ortega y Gasset, G. Marcel, which help to interpret T. Osmachka’s texts. M. Heidegger’s ideas of being-toward-death, Dasein, human self, essential loneliness, and others were used as parallels to the poetic texts. The researcher refers to the theses of Ortega y Gasset’s philosophy concerning loneliness as the initial state of a man and attempts to find the Other, friendship, and love. The article also uses the theory by Marcel on the phenomenology and metaphysics of hope. The dialogue between poetry and existential philosophy reveals the meanings of poetic images and specifics of creative work. The analysis allowed the researcher to define some distinctive style features of T. Osmachka’s philosophical poems and indicate some samples of expressionistic and surrealistic poetics in his works.

Федоріва «Отчий світильник», зокрема на оригінальній авторській інтерпретації символу, поширеного не лише в українській, а й у світовій культурі. Сонце в романі асоціюється з потугою природи, внутрішньою силою та чистотою людини. Вогонь є джерелом світла й тепла, володіє силою очищення, тому часто сприймається як оберіг дому і символ любові. Амбівалентність вогню (вогонь життя і вогонь смерті) репрезентує протилежні первні світобудови та людської природи. Свіча символізує прозріння людини, виявляється віщим знаком чи провідником до потойбічного світу. Роль «світильника», що є джерелом духовного просвітлення, у романі виконують рідна земля, праведна людина, тексти культури, митці та вчителі, які допомагають шукати істину та передавати її наступним поколінням. The paper deals with the novel “Paternal Lantern” by Roman Fedoriv, namely with the symbolic meanings the light acquires according to its material representation in the work. The writer interprets this symbol, common for the cultures of the whole world, in a rather original way. In the novel, the sunlight is associated with the human internal strength and power of nature; it is a precondition for life as well as evidence of righteous existence on earth. The sunset symbolizes approaching death and thereby manifests the man’s need to rethink his way of life. The fire is a source of light and heat, and even, in accordance with ancestral beliefs, an abode of the deity; therefore it is frequently treated as a guarantee of family’s happiness and longevity, as a patron of the house. The fire has the power to clear evil and passions out; however, it also symbolizes love, which needs care not less than a bonfire. The ambivalence of the fire, namely the fire of life and the one of death, caused by its origin and destination, represents opposite principles of the universe. The ‘free’ fire, lit in the open air due to the community’s will, resembles the lantern of Halychyna land for the novel’s characters. Hidden in the depths of human being, the outbursts of anger, the experience of happiness and joy, and still untapped potential, which makes a person capable of making great things, are also associated with fire. The candle symbolizing “light that enlightens everyone” accompanies characters’ good thoughts and actions, it can be a prophetic sign or guide to the aft erlife. The function of ‘lantern’ in the novel is also performed by the things related not to the physical light but the shine of life, insight, and true understanding. These are home (native land), a righteous person, art and texts, minstrels, scholars and teachers that bring enlightenment to the people, help them search for truth and pass it on to the next generations leaving the trace of light in their descendants’ memory.

У статті досліджується повернення імені Богдана Ігоря Антонича в літературу після кількох десятиліть замовчування й заборони в Україні тоталітарним режимом, інтерпретація творчості поета в українському та зарубіжному літературознавстві. Зосереджено увагу на таких аспектах: висока оцінка творчості Антонича провідними поетами й літературними критиками в Україні та в діаспорі, переклади творів іноземними мовами, вплив творчості поета на покоління 1960—1980-х років. Наголошується на спорідненості поезії Б. І. Антонича з творчістю західноєвропейських поетів-модерністів: Р. М. Рільке, Т. С. Еліота, Г. Лорки, Ч. Мілоша, акцентовано на елементах різних стильових течій — футуризму, імажинізму, сюрреалізму, на міфотворчому характері поезії Антонича. The paper analyzes the return of Bohdan Ihor Antonych’s name to the literature after several decades of suppression and prohibition by the Soviet totalitarian regime. The author also focuses on the interpretation of the poet’s work in Ukrainian and foreign literary studies. The researcher points out the following historical and cultural factors: partial liberalization of the communist regime in the Soviet Union; high appreciation of Antonych’s work by leading poets and literary critics in Ukraine and the Ukrainian diaspora; translations of works into foreign languages, in particular, Slavic ones; the influence of the poet’s work on the generations of the 1960s—1980s. Special attention is paid to the cooperation of American scholars and translators Watson Kirkconnell and Constantine H. Andrysyshen in translating the Ukrainian poet’s texts into English. The researcher traces the changes in views on Antonych’s poetry: the claims that he was a talented poet who did not have time to fully realize his talent due to his early death were eventually substituted by recognition of his poetry’s kinship with the works of Western European modernist poets such as R. M. Rilke, T. S. Eliot, F. G. Lorca, Cz. Miłosz. The paper also highlights the discussion on the stylistic dominant of Antonych’s poetry and focuses on the elements of different literary movements, namely futurism, imagism, and surrealism. It is emphasized that the poet was not only interested in the issues of style but also shaped the different styles of the time with his special features. He characterized impressionism as the relation of color to light, pointed out the idea of movement in futurism, focused on the geometric outlines of real objects in cubism, appreciated pure harmony of geometric patterns in suprematism. Moreover, Antonych’s poetry was related to creating myths, based on the tradition of the national folklore worldview.

The purpose of the article is to consider the legislative support for adult education in Ukraine and the United Kingdom in the twentieth century.The article uses the following research methods such as: theoretical (analysis of philosophical, pedagogical, psychological literature); interpretive-analytical method; method of comparative-historical analysis.In order to identify similar and distinctive features in the adult education system, its legislative support of Ukraine in the UK made a comparative analysis of regulatory documents on the problem of the formation and development of adult education.Adult education in the twentieth century is developing significantly in the UK. A number of laws contributed to changing the structure of adult education management, the correlation between centralization and decentralization of adult education management.In this period, the UK provides the introduction of: mentoring – the introduction of a mentor-teacher position in schools for 2–3 years; Individual Professional Development Plan for Beginner Teacher training of mentor and teacher-beginner. We consider the educational support program for a teacher-beginner (entering into a profession) as an intermediate stage between teacher training and professional development programs in the workplace as a productive idea that will facilitate the modernization of teacher training that needs to be implemented in Ukraine – whether to introduce mentoring or educational internship institution that will allow to form their own professional style in the pedagogical team by integrating into professional activities.It is considered how the development of adult education in Ukraine in the twentieth century took place comparing to that in Great Britain. It is concluded that the development of adult education took place at the state level in the twentieth century in Ukraine, as well as in the UK.Strengthening the development of adult education in the twentieth century in the UK, is due to improved production, due to an increase in the level of the scientific-technological progress in enterprises. Legislation and regulations were adopted, which contributed to the improvement of the adult education management structure. It is worthwhile that in this period of time in the UK, implementation is envisaged: mentoring; Individual Professional Development, Plan for Beginner Teacher, mentor and teacher-beginner training. We consider the program of support for a beginner teacher (entry into a profession) that promotes the modernization of teacher training as a productive idea that needs to be implemented in Ukraine. It may be a positive introduction of the Institute of mentoring or pedagogical internship, which will allow the teacher to form his own professional style in the pedagogical team through integration into professional activities., Метою статті є розгляд законодавчого забезпечення освіти дорослих в Україні та Великій Британії у ХХ ст.У статті використано методи дослідження: теоретичні (аналіз філософської, педагогічної, психологічної літератури); інтерпретаційно-аналітичний метод; метод порівняльно-історичного аналізу.З метою виявлення подібних і відмінних ознак в системі освіти дорослих, її законодавчого забезпечення у Великій Британії України зроблено порівняльний аналіз нормативно-правових документів з проблеми становлення і розвитку освіти дорослих.Розглянуто, як відбувався розвиток освіти дорослих в Україні в ХХ ст. порівняно з Великою Британією.

Стаття – спроба прочитати творчість М. Бажана крізь призму еволюції мотиву надії. Стверджується, що цей мотив має в поета культурно-історичний масштаб і практично-діяльнісний зміст. Переживання надії стає енергією прогресу й творення культури. Надія живиться активною діяльністю й сама живить труд, мистецтво, науку, творчість. Способи долання безнадії в поезії М. Бажана оновлювалися впродовж десятиліть у зв'язку зі зміною уявлень про суспільну роль поезії. Якщо спочатку осягнення цілісності бачиться в річищі класової боротьби, то пізніше поет схиляється до культуротворення. Філософічність автора “Гофманової ночі” не мала споглядального характеру, була перейнята екзистенційними й соціальними проблемами, спрямовувалась гуманістичними цінностями. The paper off ers an attempt to read the works of M. Bazhan focusing on the evolving motive of hope. It is stated that this motive has its cultural and historical scope and practical content. Presently the experience of hope becomes energy of progress and cultural creation. Hope is energized by active work and nourishes work, art, science, creativity. The methods of overcoming despair in Bazhan’s poetry have been updated over the course of decades in connection with the changes in perception of the social role of poetry. Although initially the comprehension of integrity was seen in the stream of the class struggle, later the poet preferred healing the soul with art. The philosophy of the author of the “Hoff man’s Night” was not contemplative; it was focused on existential and social problems and directed by humanistic values. It is no coincidence that the poet chose the least irrational of the three main Christian virtues, the most earthly and human one – the hope. Instead, most poets at all times cultivated predominantly faith and love. This fact might explain why Bazhan’s poetry never gained vast popularity but constantly attracted attention of critics and scholars. The author’s path from despair and fear to hope is the path from the local, psychological, individual to the universal, social, and philosophical. The continual motive of hope gives some unexpected coloring to a seemingly trivial Enlightenment-like picture of the future. The concepts of progress are being filled with drama and dynamics. Existential problems proved to be much more important than the ideal future projects. The sources and plan of the progress are contained not in the objective laws of the history, but exclusively in a human being, permanently fighting in the darkness and chaos. From this point of view, Bazhan is not a representative of the Soviet-style Marxism. In fact, his worldview is rather in tune with E. Bloch’s neo-Marxism or J.-P. Sartre’s existentialism.

У статті розглядається взаємодія літератури з дійсністю в різних контекстах. Термін “знедійснення дійсності” був запропонований В. Петровим (В. Домонтовичем) наприкінці 1940-х років. Перші рефлексії над цим явищем належать М. Євшану стосовно творчості Лесі Українки (1913). Тогочасне українське життя не надавалося поетесі для пошуку ґрунту модерного естетичного розвитку. Подібне можна спостерегти й у творчості М. Гоголя. В. Петров у концепціях “знедійснення дійсності” і “безґрунтовності” наближався до екзистенціальних ідей Л. Шестова (“Апофеоз безґрунтовності”, 1905). Багатозначність терміну “безґрунтовність” дозволяє використовувати його в різних контекстах – від філософськи значущого (як у Г. Сковороди, Е. Сведенборга, Л. Шестова), містичного, як у випадку з М. Гоголем, О. де Бальзаком, до прогностично аналітичного (В. Домонтович) і навіть побутово-вульгарного (соцреалізм). Literature can interact with reality in many possible ways, and one of them is ‘derealization of reality’. The term was introduced by Viktor Petrov (V. Domontovych) at the end of the 1940s; yet the first reflections on this phenomenon in the discourse of the Ukrainian literature appeared in 1913 within Mykola Yevshan’s articles on the specificity of Lesia Ukrainka’s creative work. Real Ukrainian life of that time did not provide a proper material for the philosophical perspectives of her poetry; it didn’t allow implementing the modernist aesthetics which were gradually developing in Europe and timidly penetrating into Ukrainian culture. To a certain extent Lesia Ukrainka’s situation may be compared to indispensability of the choice facing Gogol, who was compelled to write in Russian. This was, first of all, the consequence of the low status of the Ukrainian language in Russian Empire. In the study “Apotheosis of Groundlessness” (1905) Lev Shestov announced a new phase of philosophical understanding of reality. He related a process of cognition with a subject of cognition, i. e. with entire destiny of a human being. In his concepts of ‘derealization of reality’ and ‘groundlessness’ Viktor Petrov came close to Shestov’s existentialist ideas applied to the negativity and skepticism as the life strategies. Petrov, in a similar way to that of Hryhorii Skovoroda, insisted on the absolute autonomy of a person; he asserted one’s right to the critical perception of the world and even skeptical attitude towards it. The polysemy of the term ‘groundlessness’ allows using it in diverse contexts: from philosophical (Skovoroda, Swedenborg, Shestov) and mystical (Gogol, Balzac) to analytical and prognostic (V. Domontovych’s novel “Without Ground”), let alone the primitive meaning this term acquired in the literature of socialist realism.

Творчість Федора Потушняка формувалася під впливом сучасних йому культурно-історичних реалій, європейської філософії. Розуміння прихованого, таємничого пронизує не лише лірику, а й прозу письменника. У статті досліджено мотив пошуку крізь призму метафізичного в новелах Ф. Потушняка – віднайдення персонажами втраченого зв'язку зі своїми духовними праосновами, сенсу життя, творчості. Також розглянуто образи-символи, зміну часу і простору, інші художні деталі. Fedir Potushniak’s works were closely connected to historical and cultural tendencies of literary process of the late 19th – early 20th centuries and therefore refl ected Modernism in its European and particular Ukrainian patterns, especially in its transcendental aspect concerning the metaphysical nature of human being. Thus the literary works by Fedir Potushniak require a study that takes into account philosophical ideas of his epoch. Fedir Potushniak created his own philosophical conception considering human existence in connection with its spiritual aspect. The writer’s attempt of uncovering the transcendental sense of things is a peculiar feature of both his lyrics and prose. The paper interprets Potushniak’s short stories in the light of his philosophical understanding of metaphysics. Philosophical and aesthetic approach to the analysis of text involves using hermeneutical and aesthetic research methods. Images, symbols, time and space variations and other literary details in the works by Fedir Potushniak have been examined with regard to the metaphysical nature of human being and the motif of search refl ecting the way of the characters to perceiving their own life and art. A special accent has been made on the issue of human being in the writer’s short stories. The aim of search for magic things such as buried treasure, fire, stone, flower, leads the characters to happiness, prompting them to realize their own spiritual roots beyond time and space. Looking for their dream the characters of Potushniak’s stories pass the inner way of spiritual formation. Interpretation of short stories by Fedir Potushniak with regard to their philosophical background contributes to better understanding of the writer’s creative phenomenon. The paper aims to reveal new meanings in Potushniak’s fiction and outlines the aspects of interpreting it within interdisciplinary research.

Кошелівця, підкріплюючи спостереження міркуваннями відомих літературознавців щодо специфіки інтерпретації тексту. Сповідуючи презумпцію факту та художньо-естетичні критерії поцінування художнього тексту, критик із Заходу висновував свої сентенції на історичному тлі та в широкому європейському літературному контексті. Обстоюючи свою антикультівську позицію щодо О. Гончара, він оцінював твори класика української радянської літератури виключно з позиції художньої правди. Ця контроверсійна тема в опозиційному літературно-критичному дискурсі І. Кошелівця тривалий час сприймалася своєрідним викликом, підривом “основ” національної культури, однак без її детального розгляду історія української літератури буде неповною. The paper traces the reception of O. Honchar’s personality and works in publications of the journal “Suchasnist” in 1960s–1990s. The author of the paper bases her research on the multi-genre publications by I. Koshelivets, which had utterly polemical tone, and reinforces her observations with the other scholars’ ideas regarding the specifics of interpreting the text. Adhering to the presumption of fact and the aesthetic criteria for assessing the work of literature, a Western critic put his maxims against a historical background and in a broad European literary context. Defending his anti-cult position in regard to the writer’s personality of O. Honchar, I. Koshelivets evaluated the works of the Ukrainian Soviet literature classic based on the ground of artistic truth exclusively. Despite the fact that O. Honchar mastered the language skillfully and had an indisputable gift of a writer, he always adhered to the ‘boundaries of the permitted’, which made him to limit the scope of themes and adhere to the artificial style with its varnished reality and false poetic flavor. Paying tribute to the fact that O. Honchar supported the Ukrainian sixtiers and always had a pro-Ukrainian position, I. Koshelivets still kept his principled position for decades. The critic considered the literary work of O. Honchar as a sample of socialist realism with its indisputable taboos. In particular, he analyzed in detail the most known Honchar’s novel “Cathedral”. According to I. Koshelivets, it got its fame mostly due to the party functionaries that made a relatively weak piece of literature a political event and gave it some extra-literary value, so that the issues of style and literary features became secondary. The author of the paper states that in the conditions of a totalitarian society and ideologically controlled literary process, the talent of O. Honchar couldn’t be realized properly, anyway. This controversial topic of I. Koshelivets’s interpretation of the works by Ukrainian Soviet literature classic has been perceived within the oppositional literary-critical discourse as a kind of challenge undermining the ‘foundations’ of the national culture. Although without its detailed consideration the history of Ukrainian literature will be incomplete.

У статті йдеться про залучення в 1920 – 1930-ті роки українських авторів мандрівних нарисів про закордонне буття до розвідницько-шпигунської діяльності в різних формах. Це було виконання побіжних завдань поруч із відтворенням побаченого, на що вказують різноманітні “сліди” в нарисових текстах книжок С. Голованівського, О. Досвітнього, К. Котка, Л. Недолі, В. Поліщука та ін. У цьому переконують численні обмовки, недомовки, повідомлення про дивні маршрути мандрів, неодноразові зустрічі з радянськими консульськими й посольськими працівниками, політичними емігрантами й нелегалами, митцями лівого спрямування. The article deals with the engagement of the Ukrainian authors of travel essays about foreign life to the intelligence and spy activities in diff erent forms, usually for performing the special tasks alongside with observation and making literary notes. Various textual ‘footprints’ in their travel writings prove this fact. In two interwar decades Ukrainian travel writings had a period of rise and rapid development; they were generously financed by publishing houses, editorial boards of the magazines, different state institutions and labor unions. Numerous books by amateur and experienced professional writers, predominantly about their trips around Ukrainian and other Soviet lands, were published in large numbers. Very often the travelers were professional military men, secret agents or followed out the instructions of the special service, openly recognizing it in their books. Not so many, but still a lot of travel writings described what had been seen, heard and read abroad. Crossing the border of the USSR required essential expenses in foreign currency and special permissions; therefore only selected representatives of literature could visit European and Asian countries. This fact makes one suspect them of cooperation with diff erent intelligence institutions. The textual analysis of the books written by S. Holovanivskyi, O. Dosvitnii, K. Kotko, L. Nedolia, V. Polishchuk and others proves that these suspicions are well-grounded. It is evidenced by numerous slips, omissions, reports on rather strange travel routes, repeated meetings abroad with Soviet consular and embassy employees, political emigrants, illegal immigrants and left-wing artists. It is obvious that the essayists were the transmitters of secret information in oral form addressed both abroad and backwards, so that it could not be found by any customs officers or counterintelligence agents. It seems that such a secret mission influenced the texts of travel writings, intensifying their anti-Western, ‘anti-capitalist’ orientation and class bias.
