At present, the problem of coastal erosion is increasingly coming to the fore. Rising sea level and intensification of extreme storms are often cited as the main causes of this disturbance. On the other hand, human activity is increasing in coastal areas through the construction and expansion of ports and the development of recreational infrastructure. The purpose of this article is to determine, on the basis of studies on the coast of the Baltic Sea off Lithuania, the impact on shore dynamics of natural (sea level fluctuations and extreme storms) and anthropogenic (construction of hydro-technical structures) factors. The work used sea level and extreme storm data from the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service. Data on shoreline position and change in sediments volume from 2002 to 2020 were also used based on direct measurements. The 20th century changes in the position of the shoreline were assessed in 1910 and 2005 maps. Analysis of the results of the studies showed that during the 20th century and the 21st century the beginning of the largest shoreline erosion took place not because of sea level rise and not even because of the effects of extreme storms, but because of human activity in the construction and renovation of Klaipėda and Šventoji ports jetties and Palanga pier.

During the reconstruction of 2001–2002, the Klaipėda port jetties were lengthened (the northern jetty by 205 m and the southern by 278 m). These works produced an impact on dynamic coastal processes in the neighbourhood of the port. The evaluation of the impact of jetties reconstruction was based on the data obtained in 1995–2010 during the monitoring of coastal dynamics in the port of Klaipėda. Study area includes 10 km coastal strip of mainland and 12 km coastal strip of Curonian Spit. The analysis of the data concerning the changes in the annual amount of coastal sediment served as a basis to evaluate the impact of Klaipėda port jetties on the trends in coastal dynamics prevailing before the reconstruction and their changes after it. It was found that in the mainland coastal stretch closest to the jetties, where in the last decade before jetties extension the seashore was relatively stable, the coastal erosion trends were dominant. Meanwhile, the closest to the jetties coastal stretch of the Curonion Spit, where erosion processes dominated in the last decade before jetties extension, stabilized right after the reconstruction and with a passage of time sediment accumulation trends have become prevailing. Rekonstruotųjų Klaipėdos uosto molų įtaka gretimų jūros krantų dinamikai Santrauka.2001–2002 m. vykdant Klaipėdos jūrų uosto rekonstrukcijos darbus buvo prailginti molai (šiaurinis 205 m, pietinis – 278 m). Vertinant molų rekonstrukcijos įtaką jūros krantų greta uosto dinamikai remtasi nuo 1995 m. atliekamos jos stebėsenos duomenimis. Tyrimų rajonas apėmė 10 km ilgio žemyno kranto juostą ir 12 km ilgio Kuršių nerijos kranto juostą. Matavimai buvo atliekami 18 profilių žemyno krante ir 12 profilių Kuršių nerijos krante. Analizuojant kasmetinės kranto sąnašų kiekio kaitos duomenis įvertinta Klaipėdos uosto molų įtaka gretimų krantų dinamikos tendencijoms, vyravusioms iki molų rekonstrukcijos, ir jų pokyčiams po molų rekonstrukcijos. Nustatyta, kad žemyne, arčiausiai molų esančioje kranto atkarpoje, kurioje pastarąjį dešimtmetį iki uosto molų prailginimo krantas buvo santykinai stabilus, po rekonstrukcijos įsivyravo kranto ardos tendencijos. Kuršių nerijos krante, kur pastarąjį dešimtmetį iki molų prailginimo arčiausioje nuo molo kranto atkarpoje vyravo intensyviõs ardos procesai, po molų rekonstrukcijos krantas iš pradžių stabilizavosi, o vėliau čia pradėjo vyrauti sąnašų akumuliacijos tendencijos. Sand in the coastal zone is subject to a constant interchange between the nearshore and the coast. This process of sand dislocation involves mechanical sand sorting. The research was conducted in the coastal zone of the Lithuanian part of the Curonian Spit. For analysis, eight lithodynamic research profiles were selected. The profiles covered the coastal area from the top of the dune ridge to a depth of 15 meters in the nearshore isobath. To analyze the change of the granulometric composition of sand, four sand fractions were chosen: 0.1–0.16; 0.16–0.2; 0.2–0.315 and 0.315–0.4 mm. These fractions form the basic part of the granulometric composition in the coastal zone of the Curonian Spit. A thorough analysis of the transportation of different fractions across the coastal zone, has shown that the distribution of sand is quite regular. It matches the balance of the active factors that influence sand sorting and the coastal zone relief. The very finest fraction (0.1–0.16 mm) is carried beyond the limits of the sand ridge and deposited at greater depths (7–15 m). Larger particles accumulate closer to the coast, i. e. the 0.16–0.2 mm fraction clusters in the offshore sand ridge zone, 0.2–0.315 mm concentrates in the inshore sand ridge and in the dune ridge, and 0.315–0.4 mm is most abundant on the beach, in the influence zone of the swash. Remiantis kranto zonos paviršinių smėlių granuliometrinės sudėties duomenimis, buvo atrinkti aštuoni būdingą granuliometrinės sudėties kaitą skersai kranto zoną turintys, taip pat gretimus kranto zonos ruožus gerai reprezentuojantys litodinaminių tyrimų profilių duomenys. Granuliometrinės sudėties kaitos kranto zonoje analizei buvo pasirinktos keturios smėlio frakcijos: 0,1–0,16; 0,16–0,2; 0,2–0,315 ir 0,315–0,4 mm, kurios sudaro pagrindinę smėlio granuliometrinės sudėties dalį Kuršių nerijos kranto zonoje. Smėlio diferenciacijai kranto zonoje turi įtakos hidrometeorologinių sąlygų kaita, kranto zonos reljefo ypatumai bei smėlio granuliometrinė sudėtis. Mechaninės diferenciacijos kranto zonoje metu skirtingų dydžių smėlio dalelės juda pusiausvyros tarp jų dydžio ir aplinkos poveikio intensyvumo kryptimi, todėl, išneštos iš savo įprastos lokalizacijos vietos, jos linkusios vėl grįžti atgal. Už sėklių zonos išneštos pačios smulkiausios, lengviausiai pernešamos smėlio dalelės (0,1–0,16 mm) nusėda didesniuose gyliuose (7–15 m). Stambesnės koncentruojasi arčiau kranto: 0,16–0,2 mm dydžio smėlio dalelės kaupiasi įjūriausio sėkliaus zonoje, 0,2–0,315 mm – priekrantiniame sėkliuje bei kopagūbryje, 0,315–0,4 mm – paplūdimyje, plūsmo srauto poveikio zonoje. [toliau žr. visą tekstą] Обобщены и проанализированы данные исследований гранулометрического состава песчаных наносов в береговой зоне литовской части Куршской косы. На основе многолетних исследований (с 1993 г.) отобраны 8 профилей, которые представляют различные участки береговой зоны вдоль Куршской косы. Анализировалось процентное содержание в поверхностных пробах 4 фракций песка (0,1–0,16; 0,16–0,2; 0,2–0,315 и 0,315–0,4 мм), которые составляли основную часть гранулометрического состава песка береговой зоны Куршской косы. Выделены и проанализированы особенности распределения процентного содержания этих фр��кций вдоль избранных 8 профилей. На дифференциацию песка на отдельных участках береговой зоны влияют местные гидрометеорологические условия, особенности рельефа и гранулометрический состав песка. Во время механической дифференциации в береговой зоне частицы песка разной крупности движутся в направлении зон, где достигается равновесие между всеми воздействующими факторами, причем каждой крупности соответствует свое местоположение зоны равновесия. Вынесенные из этой зоны частицы песка стремятся опять туда вернуться. Самые мелкие и легче всего переносимые частицы песка крупностью 0,1–0,16 мм выносятся за пределы зоны подводных валов и оседают на глубине 7–15 м. Более крупные концентрируются ближе к берегу: частицы крупностью 0,16–0,2 мм накапливаются в зоне мористого подводного вала, частицы крупностью 0,2–0,315 мм – на прибрежном подводном вале, а частицы крупностью 0,315– 0,4 мм – на пляже, в... Mokslinių darbų, teoriškai ar praktiškai akcentuojančių periferingumo tematiką išties yra nemažai, tačiau iki šiol nėra aiškiai ir galutinai apibrėžta periferinio regiono samprata, be to, retai kalbama apie periferizacijos procesą ar nustatomas regionų periferingumo laipsnis. Periferijos tyrimuose jaučiamas geografinio-kompleksinio požiūrio į periferiją trūkumas. Mokslų integracija analizuojant pasirinktą problemą yra viena pagrindinių rekomendacijų, kadangi siauras požiūris į periferiją nebeatitinka šių dienų aktualijų, nes stabdo ne tik objekto sampratos vystymąsi, bet ir apriboja pačios periferijos kaip teritorinio reiškinio pažinimo galimybes. Šiuo moksliniu darbu siekiama užpildyti trūkstamą periferingumo tyrimų nišą ir prisidėti prie periferijos kompleksinės geografinės sampratos vystymo. Disertacijoje periferijos kompleksinis vertinimas atliekamas remiantis septyniais vertinimo aspektais: pasiekiamumo, demografiniu, socialiniu, ekonominiu, kultūriniu, politiniu bei gamtiniu. Šis disertacinis darbas – tai bandymas, apjungiant įvairių sričių rodiklius, pateikti kompleksinį požiūrį į periferiją, remiantis statistikos rodiklių reikšmėmis išskirti skirtingo periferingumo laipsnio periferinius regionus Lietuvos teritorijoje. There are a lot of scientific papers, which theoretically or practically accentuate the topic of peripherality, however, the conception of peripheral region is not still clearly and finally defined, moreover, it is rarely talked about the process of peripheralisation or the level of peripherality of region is determined. It is felt the lack of the geographic-complex view to the periphery. While analyzing the selected problem the integration of sciences is one of the main recommendations as the narrow attitude to the periphery does not conform to the topicalities of these days because it stops not only the development of conception of object but also limits the cognitive possibilities of periphery itself as the territorial phenomenon. By this scientific paper it is tried to fill the deficient part of researches on peripherality and add to the development of complex geographical conception of periphery. In the dissertation thesis the complex evaluation is performed taking into account seven aspects: dislocation, demographic, social, economic, cultural, political and natural. This dissertation paper is an attempt to present the complex attitude to the periphery while including the indicators of various fields, with reference to the values of statistical indicators to distinguish the peripheral regions of different level peripherality in the territory of Lithuania.
