Knowledge of the quantity of woody biomass of poplar short-rotation coppice (SRC) on agricultural land is a basic tool for management decisions like rotation length, volume production and the financial balance sheet of economic activities. The expansion of SRC requires a fast, reliable, easily applicable and cheap method for estimating the biomass yield, but existing methods are based on labour-demanding and lengthy measurements of all shoots per tree. The objective of this study was to verify a novel rapid biomass estimation method that uses averaged attributes of only a few largest shoots as a predictor variable for woody biomass in a poplar SRC, hybrid clone J-105 (Populus nigra × P. maximowiczii). Using data from 39 sample stumps with 187 shoots in total, we modelled shoot biomass as a function of an increasing number of shoots in interaction with different shoot parameters at two poplar SRC plantations. Results showed that the DBH of only three of the largest shoots per stump proved to be accurate estimators of the total shoot biomass of the individual stump. Comparison of biomass estimates at the stand level with a real amount of biomass indicated differences between 6-14%, depending on the site.

However, concerns about their safety need to be identified, addressed, and satisfactorily answered. Although gold nanoparticles are considered biocompatible and nontoxic, most of the toxicology evidence originates from in vitro studies, which may not reflect the responses in complex living organisms.Methods: We used an animal model to study the long-term effects of 20 nm spherical AuNPs coated with bovine serum albumin. Mice received a 1 mg/kg single intravenous dose of nanoparticles, and the biodistribution and accumulation, as well as the organ changes caused by the nanoparticles, were characterized in the liver, spleen, and kidneys during 120 days.Results: The amount of nanoparticles in the organs remained high at 120 days compared with day 1, showing a 39% reduction in the liver, a 53% increase in the spleen, and a 150% increase in the kidneys. The biological effects of chronic nanoparticle exposure were associated with early inflammatory and fibrotic responses in the organs and were more pronounced in the kidneys, despite a negligible amount of nanoparticles found in renal tissues.Conclusion: Our data suggest, that although AuNPs belong to the safest nanomaterial platforms nowadays, due to their slow tissue elimination leading to long-term accumulation in the biological systems, they may induce toxic responses in the vital organs, and so understanding of their long-term biological impact is important to consider their potential therapeutic applications. The goal of this study was to design cationic oligoethylene glycol (OEG) compounds varying in hydrophobicity and molecular electrostatic potential as ligand shells of GNRs. Three series of ligands with different length of OEG chain (ethylene glycol units = 3, 4, 5) and variants of quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) as terminal functional group were synthesized and compared to a prototypical quaternary ammonium ligand with alkyl chain – (16-mercaptohexadecyl)trimethylammonium bromide (MTAB).Methods: Step-by-step research approach starting with the preparation of compounds characterized by NMR and HRMS spectra, GNRs ligand exchange evaluation through characterization of cytotoxicity and GNRs cellular uptake was used. A method quantifying the reshaping of GNRs was applied to determine the effect of ligand structure on the heat transport from GNRs under fs-laser irradiation.Results: Fourteen out of 18 synthesized OEG compounds successfully stabilized GNRs in the water. The colloidal stability of prepared GNRs in the cell culture medium decreased with the number of OEG units. In contrast, the cellular uptake of OEG+GNRs by HeLa cells increased with the length of OEG chain while the structure of the QAS group showed a minor role. Compared to MTAB, more hydrophilic OEG compounds exhibited nearly two order of magnitude lower cytotoxicity in free state and provided efficient cellular uptake of GNRs close to the level of MTAB. Regarding photothermal properties, OEG compounds evoked the photothermal reshaping of GNRs at lower peak fluence (14.8 mJ/cm2) of femtosecond laser irradiation than the alkanethiol MTAB.Conclusion: OEG+GNRs appear to be optimal for clinical applications with systemic administration of NPs not-requiring irradiation at high laser intensity such as drug delivery and photothermal therapy inducing apoptosis.Keywords: gold nanorods, quaternary ammonium salts, oligoethylene glycol, cellular uptake, photothermal stability

Gaussian filtering is a basic operation commonly used in numerous image and volume processing algorithms. It is, therefore, desirable to perform it as efficiently as possible. Over the last decade CPUs have been successfully extended with several SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) extensions, such as MMX, 3DNow!, and SSE series. In this paper we introduce a new technique for Gaussian filtering of volume data sets-the extended volume-together with its SIMD implementation using the SSE technology. We further introduce a SIMD optimized recursive IIR implementation of the Gaussian filter, and finally, we parallelize the SSE versions with the help of OpenMP (Open Multi-Processing). Experimental evaluation indicates that the SIMD implementation can significantly speed up both versions of the Gaussian filtering and that the non-recursive extended volume version is faster than the recursive IIR one for small widths of the Gaussian filter. An increasing number of people all around the world have become interested in remarkable and magnificent trees in recent years. Accessible databases of champion trees are available. Unfortunately, the Czech Republic does not have a single database of remarkable or champion trees. We have old tradition to find and describe an old and monumental trees in our country. In 1899 the first book was issued about it. Many of the biggest specimens are already registered in the Monumental Trees database, which is run by the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic, registered a total of 25,598 memorable trees in 2017. Not all remarkable or champion trees are designated as memorable. Due too we present the known data on champion trees in an independent checklist. There are shown 116 species of trees with their girth and other information as height, GPS coordinate etc. from various sources. This checklist is a basis for a future one national database. When comparing the champion trees of the Czech Republic with the databases of other European states, particularly that of Monumental Trees, it emerges that we are not far from coming first. The Czech champion tree, Vejda's Lime Tree in Pastviny (Tilia platyphyllos Scop.) measured 1,305 cm at girth in 2015. We would like to prepare one integrated Czech database of remarkable trees and champion trees by help of the Professor August Bayer Foundation as soon as possible.

Background: Dabigatran directly inhibits thrombin and is used in primary and secondary stroke prevention in individuals with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. The prodrug dabigatran etexilate is absorbed by enteral P-glycoprotein (ABCB1) and then activated by hepatic and intestinal carboxylesterases (CES1) to produce active metabolites. Variations in dabigatran metabolism because of genetics may affect concentration levels and clinical outcomes., Study Question: We conducted a study to assess how polymorphisms in the CES1 (rs2244613) and ABCB1 (rs4148738) genes affect the through plasma level (c min ) of dabigatran and its correlation to clinical outcomes., Study Design: Retrospective multicentric study of consecutive patients on dabigatran therapy. Examination of CES1 rs2244613 and ABCB1 rs4148738 polymorphisms, c min 12 hours after administration, clinical follow-up (ischemic stroke, major or clinically relevant hemorrhage, myocardial infarction, other thromboembolism, and death)., Measures and Outcomes: A total of 432 patients received treatment for an average of 19.78 months (SD of 20.165). The sex distribution of the patients was 56.5% male, and the average age was 67.56 years (SD of 14.7). The ABCB1 variant genotype was present in 67.8% of patients, whereas 37.5% carried the CES1 polymorphism., Results: Compared with wild-type patients, patients with the CES1 variant had significantly lower dabigatran plasma levels (with a mean difference of 16.986; 95% confidence interval, 5.794-28.178 ng/mL, P = 0.003). We also found a significant risk of major bleeding in patients carrying the ABCB1 rs4148738 allele (hazard ratio = 1.99, confidence interval 95% 1.10 to 3.59, P = 0.024)., Conclusions: The CES1 variant genotype rs2244613 is closely linked with reduced c min of dabigatran. Climate change shifts tree growth phenology and dynamics in temperate forests. However, there is still little information on how warming climate changes intra-annual growth patterns and how these changes affect the productivity and carbon uptake of temperate trees. To address this knowledge gap, we used high-precision growth data from automatic dendrometers to quantify the impacts of unusually warm weather in 2022 (hot year) on growth phenology, dynamics and aboveground biomass (AGB) production in eight common temperate species (both conifers and broadleaved) in the Czech Republic. Mixed-effect models were used to investigate inter-annual changes in the start, end, and length of the growing season and intra-annual growth dynamics. We also modelled how changes in growth phenology, growth rates, and tree size affected yearly AGB production of individual trees. In the hot year, the growth started 5 days earlier, peaked 22 days earlier and ended 20 days earlier than in the climatically normal year, resulting in a shorter growing season with fewer growing days. AGB production decreased 36 % in the hot year, mainly due to fewer growing days and lower maximum growth rates, but with significant variation among tested species. The decline in AGB production in the hot year was most significant in the most productive species, which were also the species with the greatest reduction in the number of growing days. Tree size strongly enhanced AGB production, but its effect did not change with climate variation. Our findings suggest that climate change is likely to advance but also shorten the growing season of temperate trees, resulting in lower biomass production and carbon uptake. Background The benefit of intravenous thrombolysis is time dependent. It remains unclear, however, whether dramatic shortening of door-to-needle time (DNT) among different types of hospitals nationwide does not compromise safety and still improves outcome. Methods and Results Multifaceted intervention to shorten DNT was introduced at a national level, and prospectively collected data from a registry between 2004 and 2019 were analyzed. Generalized estimating equation was used to identify the association between DNT and outcomes independently from prespecified baseline variables. The primary outcome was modified Rankin score 0 to 1 at 3 months, and secondary outcomes were parenchymal hemorrhage/intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), any ICH, and death. Of 31 316 patients treated with intravenous thrombolysis alone, 18 861 (60%) had available data: age 70±13 years, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale at baseline (median, 8; interquartile range, 5-14), and 45% men. DNT groups 0 to 20 minutes, 21 to 40 minutes, 41 to 60 minutes, and >60 minutes had 3536 (19%), 5333 (28%), 4856 (26%), and 5136 (27%) patients. National median DNT dropped from 74 minutes in 2004 to 22 minutes in 2019. Shorter DNT had proportional benefit: it increased the odds of achieving modified Rankin score 0 to 1 and decreased the odds of parenchymal hemorrhage/ICH, any ICH, and mortality. Patients with DNT ≤20 minutes, 21 to 40 minutes, and 41 to 60 minutes as compared with DNT >60 minutes had adjusted odds ratios for modified Rankin score 0 to 1 of the following: 1.30 (95% CI, 1.12-1.51), 1.33 (95% CI, 1.15-1.54), and 1.15 (95% CI, 1.02-1.29), and for parenchymal hemorrhage/ICH: 0.57 (95% CI, 0.45-0.71), 0.76 (95% CI, 0.61-0.94), 0.83 (95% CI, 0.70-0.99), respectively. Conclusions Ultrashort initiation of thrombolysis is feasible, improves outcome, and makes treatments safer because of fewer intracerebral hemorrhages. Stroke management should be optimized to initiate thrombolysis as soon as possible optimally within 20 minutes from arrival to a hospital.

Background and Purpose: Recent studies suggested an increased incidence of cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We evaluated the volume of CVT hospitalization and in-hospital mortality during the 1st year of the COVID-19 pandemic compared to the preceding year., Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional retrospective study of 171 stroke centers from 49 countries. We recorded COVID-19 admission volumes, CVT hospitalization, and CVT in-hospital mortality from January 1, 2019, to May 31, 2021. CVT diagnoses were identified by International Classification of Disease-10 (ICD-10) codes or stroke databases. We additionally sought to compare the same metrics in the first 5 months of 2021 compared to the corresponding months in 2019 and 2020 (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT04934020)., Results: There were 2,313 CVT admissions across the 1-year pre-pandemic (2019) and pandemic year (2020); no differences in CVT volume or CVT mortality were observed. During the first 5 months of 2021, there was an increase in CVT volumes compared to 2019 (27.5%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 24.2 to 32.0; P<0.0001) and 2020 (41.4%; 95% CI, 37.0 to 46.0; P<0.0001). A COVID-19 diagnosis was present in 7.6% (132/1,738) of CVT hospitalizations. CVT was present in 0.04% (103/292,080) of COVID-19 hospitalizations. During the first pandemic year, CVT mortality was higher in patients who were COVID positive compared to COVID negative patients (8/53 [15.0%] vs. 41/910 [4.5%], P=0.004). There was an increase in CVT mortality during the first 5 months of pandemic years 2020 and 2021 compared to the first 5 months of the pre-pandemic year 2019 (2019 vs. 2020: 2.26% vs. 4.74%, P=0.05; 2019 vs. 2021: 2.26% vs. 4.99%, P=0.03). In the first 5 months of 2021, there were 26 cases of vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT), resulting in six deaths., Conclusions: During the 1st year of the COVID-19 pandemic, CVT hospitalization volume and CVT in-hospital mortality did not change compared to the prior year. COVID-19 diagnosis was associated with higher CVT in-hospital mortality. During the first 5 months of 2021, there was an increase in CVT hospitalization volume and increase in CVT-related mortality, partially attributable to VITT.

The transcription factor c-Myb is an oncoprotein promoting cell proliferation and survival when aberrantly activated/expressed, thus contributing to malignant transformation. Overexpression of c-Myb has been found in leukemias, breast, colon and adenoid cystic carcinoma. Recent studies revealed its expression also in osteosarcoma cell lines and suggested its functional importance during bone development. However, the relevance of c-Myb in control of osteosarcoma progression remains unknown. A retrospective clinical study was carried out to assess a relationship between c-Myb expression in archival osteosarcoma tissues and prognosis in a cohort of high-grade osteosarcoma patients. In addition, MYB was depleted in metastatic osteosarcoma cell lines SAOS-2 LM5 and 143B and their growth, chemosensitivity, migration and metastatic activity were determined. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that high c-Myb expression was significantly associated with poor overall survival in the cohort and metastatic progression in young patients. Increased level of c-Myb was detected in metastatic osteosarcoma cell lines and its depletion suppressed their growth, colony-forming capacity, migration and chemoresistance in vitro in a cell line-dependent manner. MYB knock-out resulted in reduced metastatic activity of both SAOS-2 LM5 and 143B cell lines in immunodeficient mice. Transcriptomic analysis revealed the c-Myb-driven functional programs enriched for genes involved in the regulation of cell growth, stress response, cell adhesion and cell differentiation/morphogenesis. Wnt signaling pathway was identified as c-Myb target in osteosarcoma cells. Taken together, we identified c-Myb as a negative prognostic factor in osteosarcoma and showed its involvement in the regulation of osteosarcoma cell growth, chemosensitivity, migration and metastatic activity., (© 2022. Background and Purpose: Rigorous and regular evaluation of defined quality indicators is crucial for further improvement of both technical and clinical results after mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Following the recent international multi-society consensus quality indicators, we aimed to assess trend in these indicators on national level., Material and Methods: The prospective multicenter study (METRICS) was conducted in Czech Republic (CR) in year 2019. All participating centers collected technical and clinical data including defined quality indicators and results were subsequently compared with those from year 2016., Results: In the 2019, 1375 MT were performed in the CR and 1178 (86%) patients (50.3% males, mean age 70.5 ± 13.0 years) were analyzed. Recanalization (TICI 2b-3) was achieved in 83.7% of patients and 46.2% of patients had good 3-month clinical outcome. Following time intervals were shortened in comparison to 2016: "hospital arrival - GP" (77 vs. 53 min; p<0.0001), "hospital arrival - maximal achieved recanalization" (122 vs. 93 min; p<0.0001), and "stroke onset - maximal achieved recanalization" (240 vs. 229 min; p p<0.0001). More patients with tandem occlusion were treated in 2019 (7.8 vs. 16.5%; p<0.0001) and more secondary transports were in 2019 (31.3 vs. 37.8%; p=0.002). No difference was found in 3-month clinical outcome and in the rate of periprocedural complications. Objectives: This paper sought to evaluate the occurrence of decompression sickness (DCS) after the application of a patent foramen ovale (PFO) screening and risk stratification strategy., Background: PFO is associated with an increased risk of DCS. Recently, transcatheter closure was reported to reduce DCS occurrence in divers with a high-grade shunt. However, to date, there are no data regarding the effectiveness of any PFO screening and risk stratification strategy for divers., Methods: A total of 829 consecutive divers (age 35.4 ± 10.0 years, 81.5% men) were screened for PFO by means of transcranial color-coded sonography in the DIVE-PFO (Decompression Illness Prevention in Divers with a Patent Foramen Ovale) registry. Divers with a high-grade PFO were offered either catheter-based PFO closure (the closure group) or advised conservative diving (high grades). Divers with a low-grade shunt were advised conservative diving (low grades), whereas those with no PFO continued unrestricted diving (controls). A telephone follow-up was performed. To study the effect of the screening and risk stratification strategy, DCS occurrence before enrollment and during the follow-up was compared., Results: Follow-up was available for 748 (90%) divers. Seven hundred and 2 divers continued diving and were included in the analysis (mean follow-up 6.5 ± 3.5 years). The DCS incidence decreased significantly in all groups, except the controls. During follow-up, there were no DCS events in the closure group; DCS incidence was similar to the controls in the low-grade group (HR: 3.965; 95% CI: 0.558-28.18; P = 0.169) but remained higher in the high-grade group (HR: 26.170; 95% CI: 5.797-118.160; P < 0.0001)., Conclusions: The screening and risk stratification strategy using transcranial color-coded sonography was associated with a decrease in DCS occurrence in divers with PFO. Alterations in lipid metabolism mediated by oxidative stress play a key role in the process of atherosclerosis and superimposed thrombosis; these can lead to acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Multiple studies have shown that the formation of atheromatous lesions is initiated by oxidation of low-density lipoproteins incorporated into the intima of the vessel wall. Here, we studied lipids in plasma samples from three cohorts: 61 patients with ACS (group A), 49 patients with AIS (group D), and 82 controls (group K). Untargeted lipidomics based on high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS) was employed to obtain comprehensive information on whether relationships exist between these patient categories based on lipid patterns. In addition, malondialdehyde (MDA) as a standard marker of oxidative stress was monitored. The most characteristic lipids in group K were fatty acyls of hydroxyfatty acids (FAHFAs). As expected, MDA concentrations were the lowest in group K. Our findings can better explain ongoing pathologies, both acute and chronic, with the potential for future diagnosis and treatment.

Objectives: Warfarin use is limited by a low therapeutic index and significant interindividual variability of the daily dose. The most important factor predicting daily warfarin dose is individual genotype, polymorphisms of genes CYP2C9 (warfarin metabolism) and VKORC1 (sensitivity for warfarin). Algorithms using clinical and genetic variables could predict the daily dose before the initiation of therapy. The aim of this study was to develop and validate an algorithm for the prediction of warfarin daily dose in Czech patients., Methods: Detailed clinical data of patients with known and stable warfarin daily dose were collected. All patients were genotyped for polymorphisms in genes CYP2C9 and VKORC1 ., Results: Included patients were divided into derivation (n=175) and validation (n=223) cohorts. The final algorithm includes the following variables: Age, height, weight, treatment with amiodarone and presence of variant alleles of genes CYP2C9 and VKORC1 . The adjusted coefficient of determination is 72.4% in the derivation and 62.3% in the validation cohort (p<0.001)., Conclusions: Our validated algorithm for warfarin daily dose prediction in our Czech cohort had higher precision than other currently published algorithms. Removal of canopy trees by logging causes shifts in herbaceous diversity and increases invasibility of the forest understory. However, disturbed (cut) trees of many species do not die but resprout from remaining parts. Because sprouts develop vigorously immediately after disturbances, we hypothesized that sprouts of logged trees offset the changes in species richness and invasibility of the herbaceous layer by eliminating the rise in the resource availability during the time before regeneration from seeds develops. To test this, we analyzed data on herbaceous vegetation and sprout biomass collected in a broadleaved temperate forest in the Czech Republic before and for 6 years after logging. Sprouts that were produced by most of the stumps of logged trees offset large rises in species richness and cover of herbaceous plants and the resource availability that followed logging, but they affected the alien plants more significantly than the native plants. The sprouting canopy effectually eliminated most of the alien species that colonized the forest following a logging event. These findings indicate that in forests dominated by tree species with resprouting ability, sprouts drive the early post-disturbance dynamics of the herbaceous layer. By offsetting the post-disturbance vegetation shifts, resprouting supports forest resilience.

Background: Patent foramen ovale (PFO), male sex, age, and body mass index (BMI) were all identified as potential risk factors of decompression sickness (DCS). It has been debated whether PFO might cause unprovoked DCS (i.e. without violation of decompression procedure) due to paradoxical embolization of venous gas emboli. To date, there are no data on the incidence or risk factors of unprovoked DCS. This study sought to evaluate the risk factors of unprovoked DCS in recreational divers., Methods: A total of 489 consecutive divers were screened for PFO between January 2006 and January 2014 by means of transcranial Doppler. All patients were prospectively included in the study registry. Survival analysis techniques were used to assess for risk factors for unprovoked DCS. Age, sex, BMI, PFO presence, and grade were analyzed. The total sum of dives was used as a measure of time., Results: The group performed a total of 169,411 dives (mean 346±636). Thirty-six (7%) of the divers suffered from an unprovoked DCS. The frequency of PFO was 97.2% in divers with a history of unprovoked DCS and 35.5% in controls (p<0.001). There was no difference in sex, age, BMI, or total number of dives between the respective groups. In the adjusted Cox proportional hazards model, PFO grade 3 was a major risk factor for unprovoked DCS; there was a slight protective effect of increasing age., Conclusions: We demonstrated that a high-grade PFO was a major risk factor for unprovoked DCS in recreational scuba divers., (Copyright © 2019 Japanese College of Cardiology. Background and Purpose: Experienced multidisciplinary stroke team and well-organized hospital management are considered necessary to achieve good results after mechanical thrombectomy (MT) in acute ischemic stroke patients. We analyzed the technical results of MT performed in the Czech Republic in the year 2016 to provide relevant data for further quality improvement., Material and Methods: All centers performing MT in the CR were called for detailed technical and clinical data from year 2016, which were anonymously analyzed and relevant technical key time intervals were compared. Clinical outcomes were assessed according to the HERMES meta-analysis., Results: In the 2016, 1053 MTs were performed in the CR. Of 15 dedicated centers, the data from 12 centers and from 886 (84%) patients (49.2% males, mean age 69.8 ± 12.3 years) were analyzed. The overall median of time from hospital arrival to groin puncture (GP) was 77 min with a range from 40 to 109 min among individual hospitals, from GP to first passage of stent retriever 20 (15-40) min and from GP to maximal reached recanalization 42 (33-80) min. The median of recanalization time was 240 (219-320) min. The recanalization (TICI 2b-3) was achieved in 81.7% of patients, 44.1% of patients had a good 3-month clinical outcome and 6.3% suffered from symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage. Peri-procedural complications were recorded in 89 (10%) patients., Conclusion: Despite achieved good overall results, a great variability in some of the analyzed key time intervals among individual centers performing MT warrants further quality improvement.

Background: Variable response after clopidogrel is well documented and may affect major adverse clinical events after stroke. Impact of CYP2C19 genetic polymorphisms is an established marker linked to variable response after clopidogrel. However, the association of certain genetic polymorphisms with prediction of major adverse clinical events following stroke still remains controversial, especially in Caucasians., Study Question: The primary aim was to evaluate the impact of CYP2C19 allele *2 in heterozygote form on major adverse clinical events in Caucasian poststroke survivors treated with clopidogrel. The secondary aim was to analyze the potential link between CYP2C19 genetic polymorphism and variable response after clopidogrel., Study Design: One hundred thirty patients of Caucasian origin following documented ischemic stroke were included. Platelet reactivity was assessed by light transmittance aggregometry (LTA) and matched with various CYP2C19 loss-of-function genetic polymorphisms and major adverse clinical events (composite of vascular deaths, stroke/transient ischemic attack, and myocardial infarction)., Results: Over the mean follow-up of 14.9 months, 19 patients experienced major adverse clinical events. The risk of major adverse clinical events was nearly 3-fold in loss-of-function allele carriers (hazard ratio = 2.904; 95% confidence interval, 1.083-7.786; P = 0.013), whereas the risk of ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack alone was also higher (hazard ratio = 3.170; 95% confidence interval, 1.281-7.849; P = 0.034). Platelet activity was strongly associated with allele *2 status (rs = 0.21, P = 0.016) but not with other genetic polymorphisms. Carriers of allele*2 exhibited lower platelet response to adenosine diphosphate-mean LTA (30.1% vs. 42.0%; P = 0.017). There were no significant differences in LTA results with other agonists. Strong association of increase in adenosine diphosphate-induced aggregation with diabetes mellitus (rs = 0.20, P = 0.023), increasing age (rs = 0.23, P = 0.008), and conversely diminishing over increased weight (rs = 0.23, P = 0.009) was also detected. The carriers of other gene allele variants lack uniformed impact on variable response after clopidogrel., Conclusions: Even heterozygous CYP2C19*2 allele carriers among Caucasian patients after ischemic stroke had a higher risk of major adverse clinical events. The LTA, however, did not predict major adverse clinical events. The exact clinical utility of these findings is still uncertain and requires large outcome-driven randomized trial in Caucasians for proof of concept.

Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is associated with an increased risk of decompression sickness (DCS) in divers that results from a paradoxical embolization of nitrogen bubbles. The number of scuba divers worldwide is estimated in the millions, and the prevalence of PFO is 25%-30% in adults. It is interesting that despite these numbers, many important issues regarding optimal screening, risk stratification, and management strategy still remain to be resolved. Recently published data suggest the possible effectiveness of both PFO closure and conservative diving measures in preventing arterial gas embolization. This review aims to introduce the basic principles of physiology and the pathophysiology of bubble formation and DCS, summarize the current literature on PFO and diving, and review the possibilities of diagnostic workup and management., (Copyright © 2015 Canadian Cardiovascular Society. Resprouting multi-stemmed woody plants form an important component of the woody vegetation in many ecosystems, but a clear methodology for reliable measurement of their size and quick, non-destructive estimation of their woody biomass and carbon stock is lacking. Our goal was to find a minimum number of sprouts, i.e., the most easily obtainable, and sprout parameters that should be measured for accurate sprout biomass and carbon stock estimates. Using data for 5 common temperate woody species, we modelled carbon stock and sprout biomass as a function of an increasing number of sprouts in an interaction with different sprout parameters. The mean basal diameter of only two to five of the thickest sprouts and the basal diameter and DBH of the thickest sprouts per stump proved to be accurate estimators for the total sprout biomass of the individual resprouters and the populations of resprouters, respectively. Carbon stock estimates were strongly correlated with biomass estimates, but relative carbon content varied among species. Our study demonstrated that the size of the resprouters can be easily measured, and their biomass and carbon stock estimated; therefore, resprouters can be simply incorporated into studies of woody vegetation.
