10. Winter wheat grain yield response to fungicide application at different stages and fusarium head blight is rather influenced by variety and year

Winter wheat is susceptible to several diseases throughout the vegetative season whereas fungicide treatments are protection used to combat fungal pathogens and to improve plant growth thus mitigating grain yield reductions. One of the main diseases is Fusarium head blight (FHB) which can be a huge problem in wheat production. Twelve winter wheat varieties varying in FHB sensitivity were tested for control of FHB using fungicide treatments made in tillering or/and heading stage, with or without inoculation with Fusarium spp. to determine the grain yield response to fungicide application at different growth stages. The grain yield from fungicide treated plots was compared to non-treated plots in two seeding rates and Fusarium inoculated plots in two growing seasons (2019/2020 and 2020/2021). The average area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) for Type I resistance was 109.48 in 2020 and 99.33 in 2021 year in VI treatment where fungicide application in heading and Fusarium inoculation simultaneously were performed. In VII treatment where only Fusarium inoculation was applied, AUDPC for Type I resistance in 2020 was 371.88 in average, while in 2021 that was 199.18 in average. Wheat varieties treated with a fungicide in the heading stage at the first year of investigation (2020) had higher grain yield, compared to non-treated plots or treated in tillering stage. These results indicated that application of fungicides in heading stage when there is sufficient moisture in May and June may increase chances of profitability from fungicide application at that growth stage. Cumulative rainfall from January till May, at year 2021 had a positive effect on the grain yield, when accumulated rainfall in this period increased chances of getting a higher yield response from fungicide application in the tillering stage. Fungicide applications should always be implemented in combination with sound agronomic management and FHB resistant varieties.

11. PHYSIOLOGICAL CHANGES AS EARLY RESPONSE IN INFECTED WINTER WHEAT (TRITICUM AESTIVUM L.) SEEDLINGS WITH LEAF RUST

Leaf rust, also known as brown rust, is caused by the fungus Puccinia triticina Eriks., that can result in a significant threat to the grain yield and quality of wheat. Elevated disease severity, known as increased biotic stress pressure, correlates with increased accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), where plants activate defence mechanisms against oxidative damage to regulate toxic levels of ROS. To improve our understanding of the physiological mechanism of wheat resistance to leaf rust, we set up the experiment with wheat seedlings of six genotypes differing in leaf rust resistance to elucidate interactions of this pathogen with carbohydrate and antioxidant metabolism of wheat genotypes. Obtained results showed that genotype with the highest severity of leaf rust symptoms decreased cytoplasmic invertase (cytInv) very early, 8 hours after inoculation (hai) with leaf rust. The downregulation of cytInv in susceptible plants may facilitate the maintenance of elevated apoplastic sucrose availability serving as nutrients for pathogen growth thus allowing spreading of symptoms more rapidly. The significant role in wheat seedling resistance to leaf rust can be attributed to vacuolar invertase (vacInv) that was supported by the fact that moderately resistant genotypes to leaf rust significantly increased vacInv when symptoms were fully developed. Also, vacInv were previously reported to assist in pathogen defence and scavenging of ROS. Simultaneously, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase (UGPase) in moderately resistant genotypes decreased and further might restrict normal growth and development of pathogen due to reduced sugar content. The main contributors of leaf rust resistance in antioxidative metabolism were ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and catalase (CAT) activity resulting in less oxidative damage in the early stage of leaf rust development and thus maintaining a higher antioxidant capacity resulting in lower oxidative damage. Thereby, carbohydrate and antioxidant mechanisms acted mutually in defence of wheat seedlings during leaf rust stress. In addition to well-known antioxidative defence systems, carbohydrate metabolism can now be recognized as a crucial mechanism in coordinating plant developmental responses under leaf rust occurrence in wheat.

13. Natural early and mid-senescence and agronomical traits in wheat at two locations

Wheat is one of the main cereal crops for ensuring food security for the 21st century. Thus, increase of grain yield is a major target for breeders, where insights into wheat productivity can be achieved by studying the activity of components of the photosynthetic apparatus, such as chlorophyll fluorescence kinetics. The present study was conducted in a set of three winter wheat varieties (Triticum aestivum L.) (Tika Taka, El Nino, and Vulkan) at two experimental sites in the vegetation season 2019/2020. Chlorophyll fluorescence measurements were used to evaluate the onset and rate of the flag leaf and head senescence every few days, beginning at the heading stage (0 day after heading, DAH) until mid-senescence stage (26 DAH) on field-grown varieties with similar grain yield capacity and maturation time. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the agronomical performance of wheat varieties and to test photosynthetic efficiency across different environments. Consequently, this research was focused on how Alternaria and Fusarium infections affected chlorophyll a parameters along with grain yield. The analysis of variance demonstrated significant effects of locations on the grain yield and its components. Tika Taka exhibited the highest yield reduction (27.1%) at Tovarnik, compared to Osijek, followed by El Nino (20.5%) and Vulkan (18.7%). Beside, significant differences for locations, 1000 kernel weight showed significant differences for varieties. Although there were not any significant differences in the grain yield between varieties, higher reductions over locations could be due to earlier senescence and contracted grain fill duration at location Tovarnik due to prolonged wet conditions which provoked natural infection by Fusarium or Alternaria species at the grain filling stage. This is supported by the evidence that at Tovarnik there were increased amounts of tentoxin, deoxynivalenol (DON), don-3-glucoside (D3G), 3-acetyldeoxynivalenol (3-ADON), zearelenone (ZEN), culmorin and 15-hydroxyculmorin and therefore the energy fluxes ratios ABS/RC, TR0/RC, ET0/RC, DI0/RC increased in effect of dual-stress. Opposite to that, at location Osijek, ‘staygreen’ traits positively affected grain size, and thus overall grain yield, through maintenance of grain fill.

Global warming reduces surface water and dries out soils thus affecting wheat production by decreasing its grain yield and quality. Therefore, for ensuring global food security it is important to enhance drought tolerance in wheat. In this context, the alleviating effects of Silicon (Si) on drought stress has been observed in wheat. It has been reported that Si is also involved in physiological functions of wheat where it may improve antioxidant defense. Accordingly, Si fertilization could provide a relatively cheap method of improving wheat drought tolerance although Si is the second most abundant element, it is not readily available for uptake by plants. This study provides an overview of the currently available information on Si-mediated defense responses under drought stress., Globalno zatopljenje smanjuje površinsku vodu i isušuje tlo što utječe na proizvodnju pšenice smanjujući urod i kvalitetu zrna. Stoga je za osiguranje svjetske proizvodnje hrane važno povećati otpornost pšenice na sušu. U tom kontekstu, ublažavajući učinci silicija (Si) na sušni stres zabilježeni su u pšenici. Zabilježeno je da je Si također uključen u fiziološke procese u pšenici gdje može poboljšati antioksidacijsku obranu. U skladu s tim, gnojidba silicijem mogla bi pružiti relativno jeftinu metodu poboljšanja tolerancije pšenice na sušu, iako je silicij drugi najzastupljeniji element, nije lako dostupan za unos u biljke. Ovaj pregledni rad daje uvid u trenutno dostupne informacije o Si-posredovanim obrambenim odgovorima na sušni stres.

15. Uloga askorbat-glutationskog ciklusa u tolerantnosti klijanaca ozime pšenice na osmotski stres

Nedostatak vode tijekom sjetve ozime pšenice znatno utječe na klijanje sjemena, te tijekom rasta klijanaca uzrokuje promjene u fiziološkim i biokemijskim procesima rezultirajući smanjenim rastom i razvojem klijanacate u konačnici nižim prinosom zrna. Cilj je ovog istraživanja bio odrediti fiziološki i biokemijski odgovor različitih genotipova ozime pšenice na dvije razine osmotskog stresa u fazi klijanja i nicanja. Odgovor klijanaca pšenice na osmotski stres ovisio je o genotipu i jakosti osmotskog stresa, te je bio izraženiji pri jačem osmotskom stresu. Lipidna peroksidacija inducirana je u klijanaca većine genotipova ovisno o jačini osmotskog stresa, dok je antioksidacijski odgovor ovisio o genotipu. Antioksidacijski je odgovor određen mjerenjem količine glutationa, te aktivnosti antioksidacijskih enzima kao i enzima askorbat- glutationskog (AsA-GSH) ciklusa. Najznačajniju ulogu u antioksidacijskom odgovoru klijanaca pšenice na osmotski stres imao je AsA-GSH ciklus. Klijanci svih genotipova su imali značajno povećanu količinu GSH kao i povećanu aktivnost glutation-reduktaze pri jačem osmotskom stresu. Uz druge mehanizme tolerantnosti na sušu, pojačana aktivnost AsA-GSH ciklusa doprinosi većoj tolerantnosti genotipova otpornih na sušu. Dobiveni rezultati doprinijet će selekciji genotipova otpornih na sušu u ranoj fazi rasta, kao i razumijevanju kompleksnih mehanizama koji doprinose njihovoj tolerantnosti.

16. Kvaliteta, opća otpornost i povezanost s polarnim metabolitima u zrnu ozime pšenice zaražene Fusariumom

Fuzarijska palež klasa (FPK) pšenice problem je za globalnu sigurnost hrane, a razumijevanje mehanizama otpornosti važno je za njenu regulaciju. Cilj istraživanja bio je ispitati reološka svojstva, opću otpornost na FPK te povezanost s polarnim metabolitima u kontrolnim i biljkama umjetno zaraženim Fusariumom. Poljski pokus je bio postavljen na dvije lokacije (Osijek i Tovarnik) gdje su umjetno zaražene biljke inokulirane u fazi cvatnje. Uzorci zrna iz oba tretmana analizirani su pomoću GC-MS-a, a očekuju se dobiti razlike u polarnim metabolitima između osjetljivih i otpornih sorti na FPK. Vrijednosti područja unutar krivulje zaraze (AUDPC) varirale su od 1, 3 (Galloper) do >100 (El Nino i Golubica) u Osijeku te od 17, 5 (Galloper) do >90 (El Nino i Golubica) u Tovarniku. Reološka svojstva pokazala su da kod osjetljivih sorti na FPK dolazi do većeg pogoršanja kvalitete u odnosu na otporne sorte. Osjetljiva sorta na FPK, El Nino, pripala je kvalitetnoj grupi B1 u prirodnoj infekciji (bez upotrebe fungicida), kod umjetnih zaraza pogoršala se na B2 u Osijeku te C1 u Tovarniku. Povećane količine oborina i optimalne temperature u Tovarniku izazvale su jače epidemične uvjete na što ukazuju povišene AUDPC vrijednosti i jače narušavanje kvalitete. Kombinacija ovih rezultata s koncentracijama polarnih metabolita pružit će nam informaciju o učinku FPK na metabolizam zrna pšenice.

17. Redoks status ozime pšenice izložene suši početkom stadija vlatanja

U uvjetima nedostatka vode dolazi do nakupljanja reaktivnih kisikovih tvari koje narušavaju staničnu redoks homeostazu te uzrokuju oksidacijsko oštećenje biomolekula. U održavanju stanične redoks homeostaze značajnu ulogu imaju metaboliti kao što su neenzimski antioksidansi, askorbat (AsA) i glutation (GSH), koji direktno ili indirektno kao kosupstrati antioksidacijskih enzima, neutraliziraju slobodne radikale. Cilj je ovog istraživanja odrediti utjecaj srednjeg i visokog intenziteta suše na redoks status različitih genotipova ozime pšenice početkom stadija vlatanja, kada biljka ima veću potrebu za hranjivima i vodom čiji nedostatak može znatno utjecati na formiranje klasnog vretena i broj klasića, a time i na prinos zrna. Uz pokazatelje oksidacijskog statusa, vodikov peroksid (H2O2) i malondialdehid, kao biomarkeri redoks statusa stanice određivani su i AsA i GSH, te njihovi oksidirani oblici (DHA i GSSG). Šest genotipova koji se međusobno razlikuju u tolerantnosti na sušu pokazali su različiti redoks status. Količine malondialdehida i H2O2 povećane su u svih genotipova uslijed visokog intenziteta suše, a u osjetljivim genotipovima i uslijed srednjeg intenziteta suše. Sadržaj metabolita AsA, GSH, GSSG i DHA ovisio je o genotipu i intenzitetu suše. Viši omjeri GSH/GSSG i AsA/DHA pridonijeli su otpornosti tolerantnijih genotipova pšenice na sušu početkom stadija vlatanja.

18. BEĆARUŠA ; sorta ozime pšenice priznata u Republici Hrvatskoj

Ministarstvo poljoprivrede Republike Hrvatske izdalo je Rješenje (Klasa: UP/I-320-20/22-05/107 ; Urbroj: 525-06/244-22-2 ; Zagreb 07. listopada 2022. godine) o priznavanju sorte ozime pšenice pod imenom BEĆARUŠA i o njezinom upisu u Sortnu listu Republike Hrvatske. Uvidom u dokumentaciju utvrđeno je da je sorta ozime pšenice BEĆARUŠA bila uključene u ispitivanje u polju u proizvodnim pokusima pod oplemenjivačkom oznakom Osk.111/19, koje je obavljeno tijekom 2021.-2022. godine na lokacijama Tovarnik, Osijek, Kutjevo i Zagreb. Ispitivanje navedene sorte obavljeno je usporedbom sa standardnim sortama Kraljica, Srpanjka i Viktorija. DUS ispitivanje provedeno je u Hrvatskoj i rezultati potvrđuju da je sorta različita, ujednačena i postojana. VCU ispitivanjima utvrđeno je da sorta ima traženu gospodarsku vrijednost. U postupku je utvrđeno da je Hrvatska agencija za poljoprivredu i hranu - Centar za sjemenarstvo i rasadničarstvo sukladno članku 58. stavak 1. Zakona o sjemenu, sadnom materijalu i priznavanju sorti poljoprivrednog bilja obradio godišnje i konačne podatke iz pokusnog polja i laboratorija i dostavio ih ovom Ministarstvu. Povjerenstvo za priznavanje sorti krmnog bilja, žitarica, repa, povrća, krumpira, uljarica i predivog bilja je na sjednici održanoj 15. rujna 2022. godine, sukladno članku 59. stavku 1. i stavku 2. Zakona o sjemenu, sadnom materijalu i priznavanju sorti poljoprivrednog bilja, predložilo da se prizna sorta ozime pšenice pod imenom BEĆARUŠA. Na temelju iznesenog i na prijedlog Povjerenstva za priznavanje sorti krmnog bilja, žitarica, repa, povrća, krumpira, uljarica i predivog bilja, a u skladu s odredbama članka 61. stavka 1. Zakona o sjemenu, sadnom materijalu i priznavanju sorti poljoprivrednog bilja riješeno je kao u izreci ovog rješenja.

19. Fusarium Fungi and Their Metabolites in Winter Wheat Grains

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is one of the major cereal crops and constitutes a major part of the daily human and animal diet. One of the most important risks associated with wheat consumption are mycotoxins, mainly produced by Fusarium species. The most important mycotoxins in wheat are mainly Fusarium toxins, such as deoxynivalenol (DON), zearalenone (ZEN), nivalenol (NIV), fumonisins (FUM), T‐2, and HT‐ 2 toxins. Co‐ contaminated samples might exert adverse health effects due to additive/synergistic interactions of the mycotoxins. According to the data quantified by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) in the current research, all metabolites had lower concentrations in both naturally-infected and Fusarium inoculated samples of more resistant wheat variety Galloper at two examined locations (Osijek and Tovarnik). At natural infection at Osijek, there were no investigated metabolites detected, while favourable weather conditions at Tovarnik enhanced fungal growth and mycotoxin production of DON, culmorin and 15-hydroxyculmorin, even at natural infection in both susceptible and more resistant varieties. DON-3-glucoside (D3G) and NIV were detectable in samples produced in natural infection without usage of fungicide protection only in susceptible variety Golubica. The highest concentration of DON (22800 and 25400 µg kg-1) was recorded in inoculated samples of Golubica at locations Osijek and Tovarnik that 18 and 20 fold exceeded the permitted limit level. Although concentrations of masked or modified mycotoxin, D3G were lower than the concentrations of DON. However, D3G should be taken as dangerous mycotoxin as it can be hydrolysed in the digestive tract of mammals. The so‐called emerging mycotoxin, culmorin, that suppresses DON detoxification and can increase toxicity of DON, was elevated in all inoculated samples, especially in the inoculated sample of Golubica at Osijek (29100 µg kg-1). Both culmorin and 15- hydroxyculmorin were in higher concentrations in inoculated samples thus showing their possible role in Fusarium virulence. Other secondary metabolites such as butenolid, or pigments as aurofusarin, that potentially can have negative effect on human or animal health, were also elevated in inoculated samples. All detected concentrations of ZEN were below legal limits set in EU. Modified and emerging mycotoxins or other Fusarium metabolites are still not regulated by EU legislative where their toxicity should be taken in concern in the future, considering findings that epidemic Fusarium conditions can provoke their production in high concentrations. In conclusion, the most efficient management strategy to mitigate the mycotoxin challenge in wheat is the use of genetic wheat varieties more resistant to Fusarium species. 20. Učinak osmotskog stresa na rast biljaka i hormone u klijancima ozime pšenice

Uslijed klimatskih promjena, suše su sve češće u svijetu kao rezultat jačeg isušivanja tla što dovodi do osmotskog stresa koji ograničava produktivnost pšenice. Stoga je važno stvoriti sorte pšenice otporne na sušu s poboljšanom sposobnošću da izdrže dugotrajni nedostatak vode. Kako bi se ispitao učinak osmotskog stresa, pokus je postavljen u klima komori sa šest sorti ozime pšenice u fazi klijanaca u pet replikacija. Za simulaciju suše u dva tretmana korišten je polietilen glikol (PEG 6000) u koncentraciji od 10 i 20 % tijekom sedam dana. Izmjereni su morfološki parametri (duljina izdanka i korijena, energija klijanja i relativni sadržaj vode). Nakon ekstrakcija, analize apscizinske (ABA) i salicilne (SA) kiseline provedene su tekućinskom kromatografi jom uz masenu spektrometriju (LC- MS/MS). Rezultati su pokazali da je kod svih šest sorti došlo do blagog smanjenja energije klijanja u tretmanu s 10 % PEG-a i izraženijeg smanjenja u tretmanu s 20 % PEG-a u odnosu na kontrolni tretman. U kontrolnim biljkama najveću duljinu izdanka imala je sorta Bubnjar (109, 60 mm) koji je u tretmanima s 10 i 20 % PEG-a smanjen na 82, 20 mm odnosno 49, 20 mm. Promjene u razini hormona stresa ABA i SA u klijancima pšenice uslijed osmotskog stresa diskutirane su u skladu s fiziološkim parametrima.

Suša utječe na klijanje sjemena i formiranje klijanaca, što rezultira smanjenim rastom, razvojem i prinosom zrna pšenice. Zbog klimatskih promjena sve su češće godine s duljim razdobljima nedostatka vode, što ugrožava proizvodnju pšenice na svjetskoj razini. Kao odgovor na osmotski stres, biljke su razvile različite mehanizme tolerantnosti na sušu, uključujući i ekspresiju različitih gena osjetljivih na stres. Cilj ovog istraživanja bio je odrediti utjecaj osmotskog stresa na ekspresiju gena osjetljivih na sušu u šest hrvatskih genotipova ozime pšenice u fazi klijanaca. Analizirana je ekspresija gena koji kodira pirolin-5-karboksilat sintazu (P5CS), ključnog enzima u biosintezi prolina, te gena koji kodiraju dehidrine (DHN5 i WZY2). Uslijed osmotskog stresa klijanci pšenice akumulirali su prolin, koji je bio u korelaciji s ekspresijom gena P5CS. Ekspresija gena P5CS i WZY2, te posebno DHN5 bila je vrlo visoka i značajno povećana u svih genotipova uslijed većeg osmotskog stresa, dok je u kontrolnim uvjetima bila izrazito niska. Ekspresija gena osjetljivih na sušu doprinijela je tolerantnosti pšenice na sušu, pri čemu je veća ekspresija gena bila prisutna u tolerantnih genotipova. Analiza ekspresije navedenih gena važna je za razumijevanje molekularnih mehanizama tolerantnosti pšenice na osmotski stres, te može doprinijeti selekciji genotipova korisnih za razvoj novih sorti otpornih na sušu. 22. Metabolic profiling of the Fusarium Treated and Naturally Infected Winter Wheat Seed

Wheat is one of the cereals with the highest global output. Nonetheless, agricultural losses resulting from fungal infection constitute a serious global concern and one of the most concerning plant pathogens are Fusarium spp. Mechanisms involved in resistance to infection are very complex since the processes linked to it might vary depending on the host plant. In addition, the end-use quality and technological properties of wheat flour are strongly dependent on carbohydrates, lipid and protein composition, all of which can be significantly altered by the infection. The aim of this study was to analyse the response to Fusarium infection at the metabolome level of 25 winter wheat varieties. The entire field experiment was conducted in the vegetative season 2019/2020 at location Osijek and Tovarnik, Croatia. One treatment was grown according to standard agronomical practice with no usage of fungicide, while another treatment was subjected to two inoculation events. In July of 2020, experimental plots were harvested and metabolic profiles of wheat grains were recorded using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Results showed that certain amino acids varied between treatments as well as between locations. Concentrations of branched chain amino acids like valine, leucine, and isoleucine were significantly different between Osijek and Tovarnik. Two amino acids which are known to accumulate under various stresses in plants, alanine and proline, were also changed. The concentration of alanine was significantly changed between treatments, while the concentration of proline significantly differed between locations. Except for the above mentioned amino acids, the content of serine was also changed, implicating changes in energy metabolism and photorespiration following Fusarium treatment. In addition, the content of the 2-ethylhexanoic acid differed between the treatments, showing that the content of the fatty acids which play a role in plant defense and stress response was also changed. Since this research revealed more than 200 polar metabolites in control winter wheat grains and grains inoculated with Fusarium, these results provide information on how Fusarium influences those components in wheat grain. 23. BEKRIJA nova sorta ozime pšenice priznata u Republici Hrvatskoj

Ministarstvo poljoprivrede Republike Hrvatske izdalo je Rješenje (Klasa: UP/I-320-20/22-05/106 ; Urbroj: 525-06/244-22-2 ; Zagreb 07. listopada 2022. godine) o priznavanju sorte ozime pšenice pod imenom BEKRIJA i o njezinom upisu u Sortnu listu Republike Hrvatske. Uvidom u dokumentaciju utvrđeno je da je sorta ozime pšenice BEKRIJA bila uključene u ispitivanje u polju u proizvodnim pokusima pod oplemenjivačkom oznakom Osk.144/20, koje je obavljeno tijekom 2021.-2022. godine na lokacijama Tovarnik, Osijek, Kutjevo i Zagreb. Ispitivanje navedene sorte obavljeno je usporedbom sa standardnim sortama Kraljica, Srpanjka i Viktorija. DUS ispitivanje provedeno je u Hrvatskoj i rezultati potvrđuju da je sorta različita, ujednačena i postojana. VCU ispitivanjima utvrđeno je da sorta ima traženu gospodarsku vrijednost. U postupku je utvrđeno da je Hrvatska agencija za poljoprivredu i hranu - Centar za sjemenarstvo i rasadničarstvo sukladno članku 58. stavak 1. Zakona o sjemenu, sadnom materijalu i priznavanju sorti poljoprivrednog bilja obradio godišnje i konačne podatke iz pokusnog polja i laboratorija i dostavio ih ovom Ministarstvu. Povjerenstvo za priznavanje sorti krmnog bilja, žitarica, repa, povrća, krumpira, uljarica i predivog bilja je na sjednici održanoj 15. rujna 2022. godine, sukladno članku 59. stavku 1. i stavku 2. Zakona o sjemenu, sadnom materijalu i priznavanju sorti poljoprivrednog bilja, predložilo da se prizna sorta ozime pšenice pod imenom BEKRIJA. Na temelju iznesenog i na prijedlog Povjerenstva za priznavanje sorti krmnog bilja, žitarica, repa, povrća, krumpira, uljarica i predivog bilja, a u skladu s odredbama članka 61. stavka 1. Zakona o sjemenu, sadnom materijalu i priznavanju sorti poljoprivrednog bilja riješeno je kao u izreci ovog rješenja.

24. Fotosinteza i urod zrna ozme pšenice u poljskim uvjetima

Vjeruje se da list zastavičar i klas pšenice igraju glavnu ulogu u osiguravanju asimilata kod punjenja zrna. Stoga bi prolongirana senescenca s poboljšanim kapacitetom nakon klasanja i svojstvom 'stay-green' mogla imati važnu ulogu u povećanju produktivnosti pšenice. U ovom istraživanju, fotosintetska učinkovitost, urod zrna i druga povezana svojstva u ozimoj pšenici ispitana su u odnosu na prirodne uvjete suše. Tri linije pšenice razlikovale su se u datumu klasanja, pri čemu je linija Osk.4.354/12-18 bila najranija s najvećom hektolitarskom masom. Analiza svojstava fluorescencije klorofila a (ChlF) i nekoliko parametara JIP-testa pokazala je da su sve tri linije imale općenito sličan tijek promjena u fotosintetskim svojstvima listova zastavičara tijekom senescence. No, evidentno je da je linija Osk.4.354/12-18 imala dulje očuvanje funkcionalnosti i povezanosti PSII jedinica od druge dvije linije, što je doprinijelo većem urodu zrna. Dobiveni rezultati su pokazali da su dulje održavanje optimalne fotosintetske učinkovitosti u stresnim uvjetima kao rezultat karakteristika specifičnih za genotip, raniji datum klasanja i bolja sposobnost suočavanja s nepovoljnim uvjetima važne karakteristike koje biljka treba posjedovati, a oplemenjivačima može pomoći u odabiru budućih genotipova ozime pšenice s poboljšanim urodom zrna.

Wheat is one of the most common and important cereals in Croatia. Therefore, high selection pressure at wheat breeding program is continually placed on disease, drought and lodging resistance, heading date and end-use quality. The usage of genetically resistant wheat lines to abiotic and abiotic stresses can be useful in controlling of wheat diseases and food contamination. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the wheat grain productivity and quality, as well as response of wheat seedlings to drought. In the current study, five lines of winter wheat with referent variety were used for evaluation of desired traits. In general, investigated wheat lines had such good characters as early maturity, high yield, but they were smaller in test weight and protein content, but with higher sedimentation value, dough energy and extensibility, compared to referent variety Kraljica. Overall, lines Osk.4.330/6-18, Osk.3.530/59-18, Osk.4.354/12-18 out yielded the referent check with regard to the grain yield. According to the results collected in this research, wheat lines differences in germination energy, and seedling growth affected by drought were obtained. As planting conditions are not always ideal, all lines could offer farmers tolerance to mild drought during sowing, and will achieve high yields. Nevertheless, stability and drought tolerance of investigated winter wheat lines at different environments needs to be checked at multi- location trials.

34. Fotosinteza pšenice zaražene fuzarijskom paleži klasa

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a serious disease of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) which can reduce yield and quality of the grain. In order to investigate effect of FHB on photosynthesis of winter wheat varieties with different susceptibility, artificial inoculation with Fusarium graminearum and F. culmorum (1:1) was performed in the field at the Agricultural Institute Osijek in 2019/2020. Analysis of fast chlorophyll a fluorescence transients of flag leaf and ear revealed that more significant changes in photosynthetic efficiency due to FHB occurred in ears, in comparison to leaves. Decrease of performance index (PIABS) and maximum quantum yield of PS II (TR0/ABS) in the inoculated ears, in comparison to control (natural infection) of variety Golubica was detected three days post inoculation, indicating that changes in photosynthetic apparatus of this susceptible variety occurred before visual symptoms of the infection. Upon symptom development, inoculated ears of Golubica showed increase of PIABS and TR0/ABS, while progression of the disease resulted in reduced photosynthetic performance, in comparison to control. Impact of FHB on ear photosynthetic efficiency of resistant variety (Galloper) was also evident, especially in the later stages of the infection, but it was less severe than for variety Golubica. Overall, this study indicated that Fusarium sp. infection may induce changes in photosynthetic performance and functioning of PSII in ears of wheat.

Newly developed winter wheat lines at Agricultural Institute Osijek are high yielding with good quality. We can combine high yield potential and good yield under drought successfully by doing drought stress testing at different stages of wheat growth. All lines have good genetic potential and showed good photosynthesis activity till 22 days after flowering when senescence started to occurr.

36. Važnost sorti otpornih na fusarium uzimajući u obzir prisutnost fungalnih metabolita

Fuzarijska palež klasa jedna je od najopasnijih bolesti pšenice koja smanjuje prinos i kvalitetu, a povezana je i s nakupljanjem mikotoksina koji narušavaju ljudsko i životinjsko zdravlje. Cilj istraživanja bio je ispitati prisutnost Fusarium metabolita u sortama ozime pšenice. Eksperiment je bio postavljen u dva tretmana (umjetno i prirodno zaražene biljke) na dvije različite lokacije (Osijek i Tovarnik) u vegetacijskoj sezoni 2019./2020. Prema podacima dobivenim pomoću LC- MS/MS-a, deoksinivalenol, deoksinivalenol-3- glukozid, nivalenol i zearalenon, kao i popratni metaboliti (kulmorin i 15- hidroksikulmorin) bili su prisutni u nižim koncentracijama u otpornijoj sorti (Galloper) u oba tretmana na obje lokacije. Najveća zabilježena prisutnost Fusarium metabolita očekivano je zabilježena u osjetljivoj sorti (Golubica) u tretmanu s umjetnim inokulacijama. U tretmanu s prirodnim infekcijama u Osijeku istraživani metaboliti nisu zabilježeni, dok su pogodni vremenski uvjeti u Tovarniku potaknuli fungalni rast i produkciju mikotoksina čak i u tretmanu s prirodnim infekcijama. Unatoč tome, sorta otpornija na fuzarijsku palež klasa pokazala je manju akumulaciju metabolita na obje lokacije što ide u prilog činjenici da program oplemenjivanja pšenice treba biti usmjeren na stvaranje sorti otpornijih na fuzarijsku palež klasa. 39. New winter wheat varieties during different climate challenges

The agriculture is economically very significant for Croatia, so this sector should be more productive and sustainable. However, crop production is relatively low in Croatia and the yields of basic crops are below European levels. One of the key problems is climate change, which results in significant damage to crop production, and can reduce crop yields up to 20-70%, depending on intensity and duration of unfavourable conditions. Consequently, farmers have reduced their agricultural activity or even abandoned it due to higher production costs and lower yields. Along with investigation of wheat response to drought, we will investigate the resistance of wheat to the most dangerous diseases, such as rusts and Fusarium Head Blight (FHB).Those diseases can spread and cause disease epidemics which can result in reduced yield and quality of the wheat. Through the project, the effect of abiotic (drought) and biotic (FHB and rusts) stresses on wheat are investigated by different assessments in the field, accompanied by laboratory analysis including expression of the genes and proteins and analysis of physiological status of the plants. Thus, dehydrins (DHNs) will be investigated which are believed to play an important protective role in plant cell during dehydration. In addition, abscisic acid (ABA) will be determined because expression of many DHNs increases by this phytohormone. Furthermore, different pathogen resistance (PR) genes could be induced or suppressed independently in response to diseases which will be determined in the post inoculation time. Overall, this study may help to develop precise phenotyping tools to identify physiological traits such as ear and leaf photosynthesis that could contribute towards increasing grain yield. The ear photosynthesis is thought to play an important role in terms of the source of photo- assimilates during grain filling, not only under different stresses, but also under optimal agronomical conditions. The social benefit of the project will be manifested in the creation of healthier wheat varieties with more resistance to Fusarium spp. and therefore with decreased concentration of mycotoxins, in order increase food safety and protect the human health. In addition to health risks, mycotoxins have a detrimental effect on the quality and the processing performance of wheat. Furthermore, multi‐mycotoxin contamination from FHB is of great concern and it will be investigated, as co‐ contaminated samples might exert adverse health effects due to synergistic effect during co- occurrence of several mycotoxins.

In the current research, we used chlorophyll fluorescence measurements and photosynthetic pigment content to evaluate onset and rate of the flag leaf senescence every 7 d beginning at the flowering stage (0 d after flowering, DAF) until late senescence stage (35 DAF) on three winter wheat field-grown varieties (Alka, Žitarka, and Olimpija) with the similar maturation time. OJIP curves implied that flag leaves of variety Alka detained the longest photosynthetic efficiency, while the earliest symptoms of senescence onset were indicated by positive L-band at 7 DAF and K-band at 14 DAF in variety Olimpija. A shift in I–P phase in the wheat flag leaves suggested the reduction of first acceptors in PSI, implying degradation of photosynthetic apparatus. Performance index (PItotal)proved to be the sensitive indicator of senescence ; it decreased very early at 7 DAF in the flag leaves of variety Olimpija compared to Alka and Žitarka. Principal component analysis elucidated quantum yield of energy dissipation and dissipated energy flux per reaction centre as the earliest indicators of senescence in wheat flag leaves and thus showed that multivariate approach may be useful in detection of senescence onset. Sustainability indexes (SIs) corroborated the statistical significance results of evaluated parameters implying that SIs can be used as user friendly data analysis for screening purposes. Selection for functional stay-green trait could contribute to increasing crop yields.

Ministarstvo poljoprivrede Republike Hrvatske izdalo je Rješenje (Klasa: UP/I-320-20/20-05/168 ; Urbroj: 525-07/0214-20-2 ; Zagreb 01. prosinca 2020. godine) o priznavanju sorte ozime pšenice pod imenom BRKO i o njezinom upisu u Sortnu listu Republike Hrvatske. Uvidom u dokumentaciju utvrđeno je da je sorta ozime pšenice BRKO bila uključene u ispitivanje u polju u proizvodnim pokusima pod oplemenjivačkom oznakom Osk. 86/18, koje je obavljeno tijekom 2019.-2020. godine na lokacijama Tovarnik, Osijek, Kutjevo i Zagreb. Ispitivanje navedene sorte obavljeno je usporedbom sa standardnim sortama Kraljica, Srpanjka i Viktorija. DUS ispitivanje provedeno je u Hrvatskoj i rezultati potvrđuju da je sorta različita, ujednačena i postojana. VCU ispitivanjima utvrđeno je da sorta ima traženu gospodarsku vrijednost. U postupku je utvrđeno da je Hrvatska agencija za poljoprivredu i hranu - Centar za sjemenarstvo i rasadničarstvo sukladno članku 58. stavak 1. Zakona o sjemenu, sadnom materijalu i priznavanju sorti poljoprivrednog bilja obradio godišnje i konačne podatke iz pokusnog polja i laboratorija i dostavio ih ovom Ministarstvu.Povjerenstvo za priznavanje sorti krmnog bilja, žitarica, repa, povrća, krumpira, uljarica i predivog bilja je na sjednici održanoj 14. listopada 2020. godine, sukladno članku 59. stavak 1. i stavak 2. Zakona o sjemenu, sadnom materijalu i priznavanju sorti poljoprivrednog bilja, predložilo da se prizna sorta ozime pšenice pod imenom BRKO. Na temelju iznesenog i na prijedlog Povjerenstva za priznavanje sorti krmnog bilja, žitarica, repa, povrća, krumpira, uljarica i predivog bilja, a u skladu s odredbama članka 61. stavka 1. Zakona o sjemenu, sadnom materijalu i priznavanju sorti poljoprivrednog bilja riješeno je kao u izreci ovog rješenja.

Zagreb 13. studenoga 2019. godine) o priznavanju sorte ozime pšenice pod imenom GROFICA i o njezinom upisu u Sortnu listu Republike Hrvatske. Uvidom u dokumentaciju utvrđeno je da je sorta GROFICA bila uključene u ispitivanje u polju u proizvodnim pokusima pod oplemenjivačkom oznakom Osk. 110/17, koje je obavljeno tijekom 2018.-2019. godine na lokacijama Tovarnik, Osijek, Kutjevo i Zagreb. Ispitivanje navedene sorte obavljeno je usporedbom sa standardnim sortama Kraljica, Srpanjka i Viktorija. DUS ispitivanje provedeno je u Hrvatskoj i rezultati potvrđuju da je sorta različita, ujednačena i postojana. VCU ispitivanjima utvrđeno je da sorta ima traženu gospodarsku vrijednost. U postupku je utvrđeno da je Hrvatski centar za poljoprivredu, hranu i selo - Zavod za sjemenarstvo i rasadničarstvo sukladno članku 58. stavak 1. Zakona o sjemenu, sadnom materijalu i priznavanju sorti poljoprivrednog bilja obradio godišnje i konačne podatke iz pokusnog polja i laboratorija i dostavio ih ovom Ministarstvu.Povjerenstvo za priznavanje sorti krmnog bilja, žitarica, repa, povrća, krumpira, uljarica i predivog bilja je na sjednici održanoj 27. rujna 2019. godine, sukladno članku 59. stavak 1. i stavak 2. Zakona o sjemenu, sadnom materijalu i priznavanju sorti poljoprivrednog bilja, predložilo da se prizna sorta ozime pšenice pod imenom GROFICA. Na temelju iznesenog i na prijedlog Povjerenstva za priznavanje sorti krmnog bilja, žitarica, repa, povrća, krumpira, uljarica i predivog bilja, a u skladu s odredbama članka 61. stavka 1. Zakona o sjemenu, sadnom materijalu i priznavanju sorti poljoprivrednog bilja riješeno je kao u izreci ovog rješenja.

45. Urod i kakvoća pšenice ovisno o sjetvenoj normi I fungicidnom tretmanu

SAŽETAK U 2018/2019. godini na Poljoprivrednom institutu Osijek postavljen je pokus sa osam sorti pšenice (Srpanjka, Renata, Katarina, Vulkan, Silvija, Kraljica, Tata Mata i Garavuša) sa pet tretmana (1. sjetva sa 600 zrna/m2, bez zaštite od bolesti, 2.-5. sjetva sa 300 zrna/m2, 2. kontrola, bez zaštite od bolesti, 3. fungicidni tretman u fazi vlatanja, 4. fungicidni tretman u fazi vlatanja i u fazi klasanja, 5. fungicidni tretman samo u fazi klasanja) u dvije repeticije. Analizirani su urod zrna, hektolitarska masa, masa 1000 zrna, sadržaj bjelančevina i količina bjelančevina/ha. U prosjeku najmanji urod zrna (7324 kg/ha), najmanja hektolitarska masa (76, 9 kg/hl), sadržaj (12, 7%) i količina bjelančevina (1003 kg/ha) dobiveni su u kontrolnoj varijanti. U varijanti sa 600 zrna/m2 u odnosu na kontrolnu varijantu sa 300 zrna/m2 dobiven je veći urod zrna (+572 kg/ha), veća hektolitarska masa (+1, 6 kg/hl) i masa 1000 zrna (+2, 9 g). Najveći urod zrna (10150 kg/ha i 9996 kg/ha), hektolitarska masa (79, 9 kg/hl), masa 1000 zrna (34, 2 g i 37, 4 g), sadržaj (13, 4 % i 13, 6%) i količina bjelančevina/ha (1357 kg i 1356 kg) ostvareni su uz dva fungicidna tretmana ili samo jedan u fazi klasanja. Fungicidnim tretmanom samo u fazi vlatanja u odnosu na kontrolnu varijantu ostvaren je veći urod zrna, veća hektolitarska masa, sadržaj i količina bjelančevina/ha. U prosjeku, najveće urode zrna ostvarile su sorte Garavuša (10062 kg/ha), Kraljica (9285 kg/ha), Katarina (9208 kg/ha) i Tata Mata (9136 kg/ha). Najveću hektolitarsku masu (82, 3 kg/hl i 80, 4 kg/hl) ostvarile su sorte Tata Mata i Garavuša, masu 1000 zrna sorte Renata, Garavuša i Tata Mata, a najveći sadržaj (14, 0% i 13, 8%) i količinu bjelančevina/ha (1365 kg i 1440 kg) sorte Kraljica i Garavuša. SUMMARY In 2018/2019 at the Agricultural Institute Osijek was set up trial with eight varieties of wheat (Srpanjka, Renata, Katarina, Vulkan, Silvija, Kraljica, Tata Mata and Garavuša) and five treatments (1st – sowing with 600 seeds/m2 without protection from diseases, 2nd-5th – 300 seeds/m2, 2nd - control, without protection from diseases, 3rd – fungicide treatment in the phase of jointing, 4th - fungicide treatment in the phase of jointing and in the phase of heading, 5th fungicide treatment only in the phase of heading) in two replications. Grain yield, hectolitre weight, 1000 grain weight, protein content and protein amount per hectare were analysed. In average, the lowest grain yield (7324 kg/ha), hectolitre weight (76, 9 kg/hl), protein content (12, 7 %) and protein amount/ha (1003 kg/ha) was found in control variant. In the variant with 600 seeds/m2 in relation to control variant with 300 seeds/m2 were achieved higher grain yield (+572 kg/ha), higher hectolitre weight (+1, 6 kg/hl) and 1000 grain weight (+2, 9 g). The highest grain yield (10150 kg/ha and 9996 kg/ha), hectolitre weight (79, 9 kg/hl), 1000 grain weight (34, 2 g and 37, 4 g), content (13, 4 % and 13, 6 %) and amount of proteins per hectare (1357 kg and 1356 kg) were achieved with two fungicide treatments or only one in the phase of heading. Fungicide treatment only in the phase of jointing in relation to control variant realized higher grain yield, higher hectolitre weight and content and amount of proteins per hectare. In the average, the highest grain yields were achieved varieties Garavuša (10062 kg/ha), Kraljica (9285 kg/ha), Katarina (9208 kg/ha) and Tata Mata (9136 kg/ha). The highest hectolitre weight (82, 3 kg/hl and 80, 4 kg/hl) were realized varieties Tata Mata and Garavuša, 1000 grain weight varieties Garavuša and Tata Mata, while the highest content (14, 0 % and 13, 8 %) and amount of proteins per hectare (1365 kg and 1440 kg) were achieved varieties Kraljica and Garavuša.

46. Procjena parametara pecivne kakvoće pšenice tijekom 2015. i 2016. godine

U radu je analizirano šest kultivara pšenice uzgojenih na POljoprivrednom institutu Osijek tijekom 2 vegetacijske sezone 2014./2015. i 2015./2016. Udio proteina u obje se godine nije značajno razlikovao (13, 4 i 13, 3%). U 2015. zabilježena je veća moć upijanja vode (58, 0%) u odnosu na 2016. (56, 02%) te su se kultivari u obje godine u prosjeku svrstali u A2 grupu kvalitete. Općenito, prema reološkim pokazateljima, u 2015. zabilježena je bolja pecivna kakvoća. Što se tiče analiziranih proteinskih frakcija RP-HPLC metodom, kultivari su u prosjeku 2015. ostvarili veći udio AG, ukupnih GLU, te HMW i LMW gluteninskih podjedinica, odnosno manji udio GLI što je značajno pozitivno utjecalo na smanjenje GLI/GLU omjera. U prosjeku su kultivari Kraljica (14, 2%) i Olimpija (15, 0%) ostvarile najveći udio ukupnih proteina vrlo dobre kakvoće obzirom na postignuta reološka svojstva tijesta i udio vrlo važnih polimernih GLU (34, 0% i 35, 0%) i HMW podjedinica (10, 2% i 10, 0%). Ovaj rad je djelomično financiran od strane Hrvatske Zaklade za Znanost.

Pšenica (Triticum aestivum L.), uz ječam, je uobičajena kultura koja se koristi u industriji pivarstva. Mnogi ljudi vole pšenično pivo zbog posebnog okusa koji nema jak intezitet kao u ječma. Međutim, mikotoksini u sladu pšenice nisu dobro istraženi. Problem je porast koncentracije ili transformacije tijekom postupka proizvodnje piva, a onečišćenje može smanjiti kvalitetu slada. Općenito, jedno od glavnih pitanja sigurnosti hrane za usjeve je onečišćenje mikotoksinima Fusarium vrstama. Mikotoksini mogu dovesti do različitih zdravstvenih problema, a jedno od glavnih ograničenja u procjeni rizika je nedostatak razumijevanja razvoja mikotoksina i transformacije tijekom procesa slađenja. U prethodnim istraživanjima dokazano je da su Fusarium toksini prešli u pivo, ako su prethodno bili prisutni u ječmu koji se koristio za proizvodnju ili ako je došlo do pojave Fusarium vrsta tijekom slađenja. U našem istraživanju istraženi su učinci Fusarium vrsta na proizvodnju različitih mikotoksina u zrnu i slada nakon Fusarium inokulacije. Analiza mikotoksina uzoraka pšenice pomoću LC-MS/MS pokazala je da su dominantni mikotoksini deoksinivalenol (DON), 3-acetil deoksinivalenol (3-ADON) i nivalenol (NIV). DON je smanjen tijekom procesa slađenja, dok je 3-ADON povećan u sladu u odnosu na zrno. T-2 i HT-2 toksini pojavili su se zajedno i pronađeni su u malom broju samo u prirodno zaraženim uzorcima. Zearelenon (ZEN) je mikotoksin koji se pojavio samo u pšeničnom sladu kao posljedica onečišćenja slada. Ovi podaci upućuju na to da Fusarium vrste koje zagađuju materijal zrna mogu imati ogroman utjecaj na mikotoksine u sladu. Također njihova koncentracija može rasti tijekom slađenja, iako je to teško predvidjeti i bit će istraživano i nadalje.

Continuous work on barley breeding program in the Republic of Croatia has started in the beginning of the 20th century and has tradition that lasts till now. Working on malting barley research has become more intensive after industrial facility for brewing malt production has been established during seventies of the last century in Nova Gradiška. Target production and breeding of barley for malting and brewing industry is demanding regarding selection of high yield and quality varieties that will meet the needs of farmers and malt producers for raw material. Malting barley quality is specified by grain quality parameters, which are applied when purchasing barley, maltsters and malt quality parameters defined by brewers. Field production of quality malting barley is influenced by environmental conditions and genotype. Genotype provides potential and good agricultural practice and climatic conditions ensure its realisation. Regarding production of malting barley in Croatia, there is a goal to supply malting plant needs with domestic barley and provide processing capacity of the factory, which is about 60000 t of malt production on yearly base. Field supervision by experts with appropriate selection of production areas, the preceding crop, soil management, methods and sowing date along with plant protection and management of pests and weeds can considerably affect the production of brewing barley in order to achieve the quality.

Uvidom u dokumentaciju utvrđeno je da je sorta LJUPKA bila uključene u ispitivanje u polju u proizvodnim pokusima pod oplemenjivačkom oznakom Osk. 84/16, koje je obavljeno tijekom 2017.-2018. godine na lokacijama Tovarnik, Osijek, Kutjevo i Zagreb. Ispitivanje navedene sorte obavljeno je usporedbom sa standardnim sortama Kraljica, Srpanjka i Viktoria. DUS ispitivanje provedeno je u Hrvatskoj i rezultati potvrđuju da je sorta različita, ujednačena i postojana. VCU ispitivanjima utvrđeno je da sorta ima traženu gospodarsku vrijednost.
