The article analyses the influence of Vladimír Šmilauer on the character of the Journal of Modern Philology (Časopis pro moderní filologii, ČMF). Šmilauer was associated with the Journal for Modern Philology as an author and an editor for Slavic studies (1939–1951). The article describes the main linguistic/philological topics contributed to the magazine by Šmilauer (Slovak studies and the history of the Slovak language, new Czech, e.g. orthography, reports on foreign literature, etc.). The period of Šmilauer’s work at the ČMF falls into a time of socially problematical political systems: the Nazi protectorate after 1939 and the communist terror after 1948. On the example of the case of Šmilauer, we will show how and when political systems were directly reflected in the philological content of the Journal for Modern Philology.

The main focus of this article is to verify experimentally the possibility of using Augmented Reality as a platform for display educational materials in the field of horticulture in the real world for people with intellectual disabilities. Experimental verification was attended by eight people with varying levels of mental disability. The educational material was presented to the research participants in the form of a video, which was accessible via Wikitude platform based on the specific GPS coordinates. To find and display the content, participants used iPad2 and Android tablet devices. Despite the great potential of Augmented Reality technology, on the basis of undertaken studies it is still not possible to recommend this type of education for people with intellectual disabilities.

The presented theses analyse four textbook series of Czech for second grade of the elementary school published up to 1938. The theses the overall structure, layout, parts of the textbooks and describes contents of the curriculum. Didactical analysis of the curriculum follows together with analysis of processes and methods then used. Using the teacher's books the didactical approach, on which the methods were built, is examined. The scope of this work is to find didactical methods, that are not used in contemporary textbooks, and which are worth to be used in present day Czech language teaching. The analysis starts with mutual comparison of the First republic textbooks, that is followed by comparison of those textbooks with contemporary Czech language textbook representing output of present-day publishing houses. The theses sum up, that the approaches used in historical textbooks are much more diverse, compared to present-day textbooks unified conception. Contemporary textbooks are more deliberately treated from visual point of view, there are differences in the scope of grammar tuition. The diploma thesis English Language Textbooks as a Possible Source of Inspiration for Teaching the Czech Language at Secondary Schools deals with the design of lessons for teaching Czech language based on the inspiration of English textbooks. The work is based on theoretical knowledge concerning current trends in Czech language didactics (constructivism and its three-phase PPP model including work with students' preconceptions, development of conscious use of the language system, content reduction and content-focused approach). The fundamental starting point is represented by the communicative goals of language teaching as well as on the integration of the language curriculum and the communicative (and literary) components. The practical part of the thesis comprises suggestions for Czech language lessons based on the inspiration from English textbooks, and its basis is a content analysis of three topics (phrasemes and idioms, grammatical voice of verbs, and means of textual continuity) in Czech and English language textbooks for secondary schools. This diploma thesis deals with the possibilities of use of contemporary workbooks and guides of Czech orthography, their quality and their position amongst other material didactic aids. It briefly introduces the concept of spelling from a linguistic viewpoint, defines the spelling curriculum in a didactic concept, and introduces the basic types of spelling exercises, as well as their advantages and risks. Empirical research was carried out through five selected publications. These were subjected to a detailed examination and the selected passages were subjected to a response from primary school respondents. This thesis analyses specific selected books, but moreover, it also aims to evaluate the possibilities and limits of commercial publications designed for spelling practice. The choice of the type of exercises included, the assignment's clarity, the content attractiveness of included texts, and the book's graphic processing and more are important factors in determining the quality of the given types of books.

The central theme of the diploma thesis is incorporation of media education at the first stage of primary school. The theoretical part of the thesis briefly defines the basic concepts related to media education, offers an insight into historcal background and gradual integration of media education into the Czech educational system and, last but not least, introduces current state of this cross-curricular topic at Czech schools. The practical part is devoted to a research survey aimed at finding out which didactic topics of media education are mostly reflected in educational materials intended for the first stage of primary school and at the same time at ascertaining how the pupils are mostly involved in media education in terms of task assignments contained in teaching materials. The results of the research show that the most frequently reflected topics of media education that appear in educational materials are advertising, its regulation and influence and characteristics and function of traditional media. In case of the method of pupils involvement in media education, the research findings show that pupils are mostly called upon to receptive activities. To obtain the results of the research survey, qualitative content analysis of selected teaching materials was used.

This thesis examines changes and evolvement in conceptual notions of nationalism and national identity from the beginning of the 19th century until present. The thesis is composed of two parts, theoretical and practical. The theoretical part delineates the concepts of nation, national identity and attempts to characterize Czech national identity. Further, it explores the notion in the context of socio-political transformations in our motherland. Moreover, this section looks at notions of education and patriotic education and the way such education was exercised in schools in particular historical periods. The study also concentrates on the concept of mother tongue and its role in building Czech national identity. Comparison of various ways the relationship towards mother tongue in various types of primary schools in this and last century is likewise offered. Folk songs are a traditional expression of feelings aesthetics of people in a specific country and they are a peculiar proof of the nation itself, but primarily are regarded with musical or historical perspective.The vision of the task is an aspiration to preview of folk songs and their lyrics from a linguistic standpoint of view and to try to create a general characteristics. The content of the theoretical part deals with folk art style and its specific sources,song folklore with its basic elements, the structure of the textual song construction.The theoretical part contains further insight the view into certain thematic areas of linguistic disciplines. Reading comprehension as a prerequisite for successful strategy of word problems solving in mathematics DISSERTATION Mgr. Alena Sigmundová ABSTRACT The dissertation describes the results of an interdisciplinary research study examining the linguistic aspects of word problems in mathematics and the connection between comprehension of the text of word problems and the success of their solution. In the introduction the research is set into the framework of theoretical bases: the term word problem in mathematics and the concept of reading comprehension, including factors influencing the understanding of the text are characterized and the results of previous research studies are described. Subsequently the work presents a methodology, course and results of testing of pupils in three pilot studies and in the main survey and the conclusions from the semi-structured interviews. The research is based on the linguistic analysis of 18 word problems with low solution success, taken from international research surveys PISA 2012 and TIMSS 2007, as well as on the level of comprehension of the text of these tasks in the 8th and 9th grade primary schools, modifying selected language phenomena and detecting the effect of these reformulations. 773 pupils from 13 elementary schools participated in the research. This dissertation thesis focuses on the topic of the development of syntax of written Czech at the pupils of lower secondary education on the material of written compositions of story-telling. The thesis characterises the form of current syntax of written Czech and its development depending on the age of pupils. The analysis is bases on two collections of texts - the texts in the first collection were produced by 6th to 9th primary school grade pupils based in a town near Prague, the second collection was produced by 6th to 9th primary school grade pupils in Prague. These data were then supplemented with corpus material. In total, there were 302 compositions analysed. Moreover, to depict the reality in its complexity, also curricular and educational materials were being analysed as well as lesson observations and structured interviews conducted with teachers. The comparison between the particular constituents of written syntax enables the conclusions to be drawn being based on the analysed material giving evidence on the current state and development of written syntax with pupils of 6th to 9th grade of primary school, as well as possible disparities of development of particular syntax constituents to be identified and some recommendations for teaching methodology to be conveyed.

This thesis describe distribution of conjunction in the first seven books "Diary of a Wimpy kid". It compare and analyse those conjunctions with its usage in school lessons (through one part of a Czech national corpus - SCHOLA2010) and with text from students (through a corpus SKRIPT2012). I compare also the situation with conjunctions distribution in the textbook for 5th grade students named More vlast je v Evropě. It also research how and which one of multiword conjunction are in these texts used. It also shows, which conjunctions are used like a first member of the sentence. This thesis may analyse, which conjunctions hears, reads and uses a fictitious 5th grade student. It should be connected with a school. This thesis ignore a language situation in the family and medial communication. Analysed books may enrich students vocabulary, because it contents huge number of multiword conjunction. The most used conjunctions in books and students text are "a", "že" and "ale". The textbook contains huge number of "a" and "i".

This diploma thesis deals with intellectually talented individuals and from the narrower point of view, gifted pupils in the subject of Czech language at the second level of elementary school. In the theoretical part, the author deals with the talents, definitions and concepts of this issue, existing models from various authors, characteristics of gifted children, approaches of Czech schools to the education of these children and extra-curricular possibilities for the development of their talent. This thesis also deals with linguistic intelligence and personality of the teacher. The main objective is to give a realistic picture of how teachers of the Czech language view gifted pupils and what differences they find between gifted individuals and ordinary students. Furthermore, the author of the thesis searches for the differences between the capabilities of pupils gifted at the Czech language and other pupils in fulfilling the assigned tasks. The aim of the thesis Innovative Approaches to Czech Language Curriculum at Lower Secondary School was to discover whether any innovative approaches to subject Czech language at lower secondary schools were included in their school education programme, if the answer was positive, the aim was to define which innovative approaches exactly they were. The thesis is divided into a theoretical part and a practical part. The theoretical part analyzes the general approach to curriculum and also the specific approach towards the Czech language. The thesis includes a brief history of the curricular reform, which was implemented in January 2005, and the opinions of the experts on the reform. The practical part contains the analysis of the innovative approaches towards the curriculum of the Czech language at the chosen thirteen lower secondary schools in the Czech Republic. A specific interest was given to innovative approaches towards the Czech language which were in agreement with the curricular reform and with the innovative didactic approaches in general. The thesis Experience in teaching Czech language at lower-secondary school is focused on the implementation of experiential learning into the Czech language teaching. The thesis consists of two parts. The theoretical part describes the main principles and methods of experiential learning and their use in the context of the Czech language teaching. The practical part presents actual lesson plans, in which principles and methods are used. The lesson plans are focused on teaching communication and acquiring active knowledge of Czech syntax, lexicology and semantics. Based on the experience of implementing of activities in teaching Czech language at the 6th grade of lower-secondary school, the author of the thesis explains importance of the experience in Czech language teaching. The results show the experience could be used effectively in the Czech teaching methodology.

RESUMÉ V ANGLICKÉM JAZYCE The diploma thesis is focused on parts of speech in the Czech language in the lower primary school. Its aim is to chart it on the general level, to introduce their definition, their historical background and the selection into the word-classes. The theoretical section introduces the parts of speech as the common part of the language. It describes them on basis of the syntactic, semantic and morphological division. That is needed for concrete introduction and realisation of the individual parts of speech. For each word class there is also briefly showed how they are presented in contemporary Czech language textbooks for the lower primary school. The practical part focuses on introduction of new methods of teaching parts of speech mainly through games and unconventional tools. The games contain rules, time management, tools and number of pupils involved. Furthermore., there are the interviews with the teachers of the concrete lower primary school who had got to test the games and tools and summarizes their opinions. The thesis deals with the critical points of teaching Czech language at the elementary school. The aim of the work was to identify the citical points of teaching Czech language to the sixth grade of the elementary level. The identification of the critical points was done through a qualitative analysis of the discussions lead with teachers of Czech language. The theoretical part of the work characterizes the Czech language curriculum in the sixth grade and its didactic apporoach in commonly used textbooks. Conceptions, such as the cricital point and the mistake are defined. The practical part of the work contains the analysis and the interpretation of the discussions carried out with the teachers. The program Altas.ti was used for the evaluation of the obtained data. The critical points of Czech language in the sixth grade of the elementary school were found to be the phenomena in the realm of syntax, morphology, and spelling. PhDr. Martina Šmejkalová, Ph.D. ABSTRACT The research project deals with children's nicknames from the linguistic and linguodidactic point of view. Nicknames are verbal means of realization of the communication act of addressing and a manifestation of a specific communicative strategies in the classroom. A research of such kind has not yet been carried out in the Czech Republic. We used a questionnaire as a research method. The main research was carried out in two phases and its main purpose was 1.) description and characteristics of 562 nicknames of 8th grade primary school pupils and of the same age group pupils attending "gymnaziums" (eight-year grammar schools) focusing on the motivation of the origin of the nicknames; and 2.) detailed characteristics of 45 selected nicknames focusing on the functioning (perception and experience) in school language communication, from the perspective of the productor (a group where the nickname originated and where it is used), the recipient (a bearer of the nickname) and independent evaluators. The dissertation explores the opportunities and limits of implementing constructivist elements into Czech language education. While in didactics of mathematics and sciences the perspective of constructivism has been dynamically developing, in language didactics it is an area which has not been satisfactorily dealt with. The effectiveness of a designed constructivist teaching strategy in contrast with a traditional one has been tested on a selected part of content matter of Czech syntax (relations in compound sentences) in the terrain of two classes of higher-secondary school. Constructivist teaching utilizes students' conceptions; therefore before the experiment itself, students' conceptions of the content matter were researched on one selected subject. The outcomes were then taken into account when creating the experimental strategy. It is necessary for teaching Czech that it makes use of the students' preconceptions and their natural language competence, and that teaching has a semantic- functional, or communication approach to the language phenomena taught. The results of the research suggest that it is possible to implement constructivist features into Czech language teaching successfully, and that their effectiveness in certain aspects might be higher than it is with traditional strategies.
