Straipsnyje nagrinėjama teritorinių administracinių pokyčių rytinėje Lietuvos dalyje problema 1939–1940 m. Dėmesys koncentruojamas į 1939 m. pabaigoje – 1940 m. Lietuvai grąžinto Vilniaus krašto administracinį suskirstymą, gyventojų požiūrį į teritorinį padalijimą, Lietuvos atstovų pastangas dėl Baltarusijoje likusių lietuviškų vietovių (Švenčionių, Dieveniškių ir Marcinkonių apyl.) susigrąžinimo, tuo klausimu vykusių derybų rezultatų atskleidimą. Archyvinių dokumentų, spaudos ir istoriografijos darbų analizė leidžia teigti, kad Lietuvos Respublikos atstovai diplomatiniu keliu bandė spręsti sovietinei Baltarusijai priskirtų lietuvių gyvenamų teritorijų valstybinės priklausomybės klausimą, atsižvelgė į „anapusinių“ lietuvių prašymus prijungti jų gyvenamas vietoves prie Lietuvos. Tačiau 1939 m. pabaigos – 1940 m. pirmosios pusės pastangos pozityvių rezultatų neatnešė. Po Lietuvos okupacijos 1940 m. birželio 15 d. respublikos partinė administracinė valdžia lietuviškų teritorijų „susigrąžinimo“ iš Baltarusijos akciją pratęsė. Politiniai motyvai lėmė, kad daugiausia lietuvių gyvenamos vietovės (Švenčionių, Šalčininkų ir Druskininkų apylinkėse) buvo prijungtos prie LSSR. Based on historiography and archival material, the article examines the territorial administrative changes in Vilnius region, which remained divided between Lithuania and Belarus at the beginning of the Second World War. The focus of this article is on the late 1939 through to the first half of 1940 administrative division of the Vilnius region which was returned to Lithuania, the attitude of the population towards the territorial division, the efforts of the Lithuanian representatives regarding the recovery of the remaining Lithuanian areas in Belarus (Švenčionys, Dieveniškės and Marcinkonys districts) and the disclosure of the results of the negotiations. There are two stages in the territorial administrative division of Vilnius and its region: first, the end of October 1939 through to mid-June 1940, when Vilnius and part of the Vilnius region became an integral part of the Republic of Lithuania. From the administrative point of view, the transferred territories were divided into Vilnius city and Švenčionėliai, Vilnius and Valkininkai counties. Second, mid-June 1940 through to the first half of 1941, which marked the Soviet occupation of the Republic of Lithuania. During that time, by the decision of Moscow, the most populated areas in the vicinity of Švenčionys, Šalčininkai and Druskininkai were annexed to the LSSR. At that time, over 80,000 people became residents of Lithuania. However, some Lithuanian villages remained part of Belarus. The Lithuanian citizens of those villages tried to raise the issue of incorporation into Lithuania. Unfortunately, the efforts to gain favor in Minsk, Vilnius and Moscow proved to be fruitless.

Prie Šalčininkų–Turgelių kelio įkurto Akmenynės dvaro valdoje kelis šimtmečius stovėjusi bažnyčia iki XX a. neišliko. 1926–1928 m. įsteigta nauja Šv. Kūdikėlio Jėzaus Teresės bažnyčia, kuri, kaip jos pirmtakė, iki šiol nepateko į architektūros tyrėjų akiratį. Šios bažnyčios tyrinėjimus paskatino XVI–XX a. pirmos pusės dvaro dokumentai, kurie saugomi Lietuvos mokslų akademijos Vrublevskių bibliotekoje (toliau – LMAVB) ir Lietuvos valstybės istorijos archyve (toliau – LVIA). Šaltinių ir iki šiol nedaug pažįstamos ikonografinės medžiagos tyrimai padeda atskleisti Šv. Kūdikėlio Jėzaus Teresės bažnyčios architektūros bruožus, įrangą, inventorių. Akmenynė, now a village in the Šalčininkai district, was known at first just as a privately-owned land, and later as an estate called Kamionka, a Polish name deriving from the name of the river Kamena. Based on iconographic materials and other relevant documents kept in the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, the present article aims to discuss the architecture of the wooden church built in 1928–1929 and its interior equipment, as well as a wooden manor that had existed in the 17th century – the early 19th century and a wooden church that had stood on its estate. In the mid-17th century, the Akmenynė estate consisted of a wooden house and farm buildings. In the 18th century, the walls of the main room of the representational house were upholstered with fabric and paper and decorated with paintings. In the second half of the 17th century, there had already been built the wooden church equipped with liturgical vessels and other attributes. It had two paintings depicting the Holy Virgin Mary and St. Bishop Stanislaus, with three more pictures, those of the Virgin Mary, Our Lord Jesus, and St. Antony of Padua. One of the authors (or the only author) of the Project of the present Church of St. Terese of the Holy Infant Jesus could have been the manager and work supervisor of the construction on this church, Anton Filipowicz-Dubowik. Most of its equipment and inventory was made and acquired in the end of the third decade and in the fourth decade of the 20th century. The painting of St. Terese of the Holy Infant Jesus is different in composition from other pictures, which were painted based on the first portrait images of the saint. Such items as the holy water font created by the stonecutter J. Szemetowicz based on a drawing by an unknown artist and the sacristy cabinet acquired by the efforts of the painter Piotr Żyngiel testify to the collaboration between the parish priest of the Akmenynė church and painters who studied at the Faculty of Art of the Vilnius Stephen Batory University. Most of the liturgical vessels were produced by Michael Newiadomski’s Vilnius workshop of liturgical supplies, and one of the reliquaries, by the Charewicz factory of liturgical vessels. It may be assumed that an unknown author who created the linocut The Stations of the Cross, as well as craftsmen of a few Vilnius workshops who produced liturgical vessels and other supplies could have used projects and drawings of Gracian Achrem-Achremowicz. Lietuviškai užrašytus Lietuvos oikonimus tradiciniais laikome tokius, kurie toje vietovėje atsirado pirmiausia, buvo vartojami vietinių gyventojų ir kurių dauguma sudėtinių dalių (šaknis, priesaga, priešdėlis, galūnė) yra lietuviški. Lenkiškai užrašytus etninių lietuvių žemių oikonimus lietuviškos kilmės laikome tuos, kurių bent viena dalis (šaknis, priesaga, priešdėlis ar galūnė) išliko lietuviška. Netradiciniais Lietuvos oikonimais laikome vėliau atsiradusius svetimos kilmės oikonimus. Rytų Lietuvoje ištyrus 3720 oikonimų (7455 formos lietuvių ir lenkų kalbomis) matyti, kad 98 proc. autentiškų lietuviškų oikonimų ir per 60 proc. suslavintų oikonimų išlaikė lietuvių kalbos požymius. Slavų kalbų įtaka oikonimams čia labiau pradėjo reikštis nuo XVI a. Einant nuo Daugpilio pusės link Vilniaus tarp lenkiškai užrašytų oikonimų lietuviškų elementų vis mažėja: Ignalinos rajone jų buvo 79,1, Švenčionių r. – 70,7, Vilniaus r. – 65,5, Vilniaus mieste – 45,5 proc. Už šio miesto į kitas puses lietuviškų oikonimų formų vėl daugėjo – Trakų r. jų buvo 69,3, Šalčininkų r. – 59,6 proc. Kiekviename valsčiuje tarp apslavintų oikonimų dažnai atpažįstamos autentiškos lietuviškos jų formos. Pavyzdžiui, Vilniaus r. Nemenčinės valsčiuje 'Ąžuolinė' oficialiai lenkiškai rašyta 'Użalino', 'Darželiai' – 'Doržele', 'Kiaulamedžiai' – 'Kiewlomiedzie', 'Rudausiai' – 'Rodowsie', 'Santaka' – 'Santoka', 'Skersabaliai' – 'Skiersobole', 'Šeškučiai – Szaszkucie, Vyžukalnis – Wižukalnia. Čia išlaikyti ir lietuviški bendriniai žodžiai, tarmiškos vilniškių formos, sudurtiniai oikonimai Juodė (Joda), Geniai (Gienie), Kvakšiai (Kwaksze), Sala (Soła); Geležiai (Giełaże), Klišabalė (Klisza Błoto), Gudaraistis (Gudorojście) (Maišiagalos vlsč.). Esminiai žodžiai: rytų Lietuva, oikonimai, tradicinės formos, suslavinti oikonimai. Investigation of 3720 oikonyms in Eastern Lithuania (7455 forms in Lithuanian and Polish) shows that 98% of authentic Lithuanian oikonyms and over 60% of Slavified oikonyms have retained the features of the Lithuanian language. The influence of the Slavic languages on oikonyms began to be more pronounced here in the XVIth century, and Vilnius was the centre of slavification. Going from Daugavpils towards Vilnius, the Lithuanian elements of the Polish-written oikonyms were decreasing: in Ignalina district there were 79.1% of them, in Švenčionys district – 70.7%, in Vilnius district – 65.5%, in Vilnius – 45.5%. To the other sides of this city, the forms of Lithuanian oikonyms increased again: in Trakai district there were 69.3% of them and in Šalčininkai district 59.6%. Authentic Lithuanian forms are often recognized among Slavified oikonyms in every district. For example, in Nemenčinė (Vilnius district), 'Ąžuolynė' was officially written in Polish 'Użalino', 'Darželiai' – 'Dorżele', 'Kiaulamedžiai' – 'Kiewlomiedzie', 'Rudausiai' – 'Rodowsie', 'Santaka' – 'Santoka', 'Skersabaliai' – 'Skiersobole', 'Šeškučiai' – 'Szaszkucie', 'Vyžukalnis' – 'Wiżukalnia'. Lithuanian common words, dialectal Vilnius forms, compound oikonyms 'Juodė' ('Joda'), 'Geniai' ('Gienie'), 'Kvakšiai' ('Kwaksze'), 'Sala' ('Soła'); 'Geležiai' ('Giełaże'), 'Klišabalė' ('Klisza Błoto'), 'Gudaraistis' ('Gudorojście') (Maišiagala district) are also preserved here. These deformed traditional forms of oikonyms cannot be called exonyms, i. e. names of geographical objects of foreign countries. The Lithuanian proper names written in Polish letters were of 5 types: 1) fully authentic (cf. 'Ankšta', dialectally 'Unkšta' – 'Unkszta', 'Dumblė', dialectally 'Dumbla' – 'Dumbła', etc.); 2) partially Slavified, changing oikonymic vowels, consonants, endings, suffixes, prefixes, roots (cf. 'Grąžteliai', dialectally 'Grušteliai' – 'Grusztele', 'Gruodžiai' – 'Grodze'; 3) Slavified ('Mekai' – 'Miechowo'); 4) translated ('Naujakiemis' – 'Nowosiołki', 'Paberžė' – 'Podbrzezie'); 5) changed ('Perūnai' – 'Dąbrowo') (all these oikonyms are from Paberžė in Vilnius district). When Slavifying oikonyms, Lithuanian roots, prefixes, suffixes and especially the suffix '-išk-', which is especially characteristic of Eastern Lithuania, were often preserved. In South-Eastern Latvia, the suffix '-išk-' of oikonyms is the most common in the triangle Aknysta–Ciskodas–Sarja (Akniste-Tiskadi-Sarja). The closer the Republic of Lithuania is, the more of such oikonyms are. Now in some places there are about half of them. There are also oikonyms in Daugavpils district, the stem of which is related to the Lithuanian language: 'Kumpiniški' ~ 'Kampiniškės', 'Lintopiški' ~ 'Lentupiškės', 'Paberži' ~ 'Paberžė', 'Papušina' ~ 'Papušinė', 'Šlapaki' ~ 'Šlapakiai'. Straipsnyje, remiantis sociokultūriniais ir socioekonominiais duomenimis, siekiama nustatyti Šalčininkų rajono vietinių bendruomenių narių judumo tendencijas ir jų galimą įtaką vietinėms kalboms. Sociokultūrinių ir socioekonominių duomenų pagrindu GIS įrankiais ir metodais įvertinta gyvenamųjų vietovių infrastruktūra, sudarytas įtaką kalbinei kaitai turinčių traukos objektų karščio žemėlapis, realizuotas „Lietuvių kalbos atlaso“ (LKA) punktų ir infrastruktūros objektų ryšių tinklas, įvertinta sociokultūrinių tinklų struktūra, judumo tendencijų ir demografinių rodiklių galima įtaka vietinėms kalboms. Šalčininkų rajono sociokultūrinių tinklų analizė išryškino tiriamojo arealo kalbinį, socioekonominį ir sociokultūrinį išskirtinumą. Tiriamasis arealas vertintinas kaip gana uždara, daugiau vidinio judumo lygio sritis. Visi Šalčininkų rajono LKA punktai sociokultūriškai yra neizoliuoti, bet kalbiškai – gana izoliuoti. Raktažodžiai: sociokultūriniai tinklai, GIS, Šalčininkų rajonas, kalbinė kaita, geoerdvinė analizė The aim of the study is to use GIS tools and methods to identify the mobility trends of the members of the local communities of Šalčininkai district and surrounding areas and their impact on the local languages on the basis of socio-economic and socio-cultural parameters. The research material consists of: 1) survey data, on the basis of which the coefficients of the influence of attractions on the language were calculated; 2) statistical socio-economic data for 2020-2021; 3) geo-spatial data of Lithuania; 4) linguistic studies of Šalčininkai district. GIS tools and methods were used to assess the infrastructure of residential areas, a heat map of attractions with the greatest impact on linguistic shift was created based on the results of the survey, and a link network of Atlas of Lithuanian Language (ALL) points and infrastructures was implemented through accessibility analysis. Based on social network theory, the structure of socio-cultural networks and their influence on linguistic shift, as well as the influence of additional socio-economic and socio-cultural factors was assessed. The analysis has highlighted the linguistic, socio-economic and sociocultural uniqueness of Šalčininkai district. The study area is a zone with a more internal mobility level: there is less migration between areas where different languages (Slavic and Lithuanian) are spoken, and more migration between different dialects (Eastern Aukštaitians of Vilnius and Southern Aukštaitians). However, due to the disappearance of ALL points in almost half of Šalčininkai district, the well-developed infrastructure in the district centre and the abundance of elderly communities in the district, the intensity of mobility is low. Therefore, all the areas surveyed can be considered socio-culturally non-isolated, but linguistically quite isolated. This ensures the survival and dominance of the Slavic language. The centre of the district – Šalčininkai (ALL 666) - is considered to be the most socio-economically and socio-culturally stable in the study area. However, this town attracts residents from socially unstable areas and residents of different dialects. This creates favourable socio-economic and socio-cultural conditions for the Slavic languages (partly also for Lithuanian dialects) to compete, but remain viable. The other ALL points in Šalčininkai district belong to the open zone, where the processes of shift in the characteristics of Slavic languages and/ or Lithuanian dialects are taking place. Straipsnyje skelbiama informacija apie XIV a. pabaiga – XV a. datuojamame Paūdronių kapinyne, esančiame Šalčininkų rajono Turgelių seniūnijoje, rastą kapą Nr. 27 ir palaidotą asmenį (30–40 metų vyrą) su tam laikotarpiui būdingomis įkapėmis, tarp kurių yra viena visiškai nebūdinga, unikali – stambus vario lydinio žvejybinis kabliukas. Tai šį palaidojimą leidžia interpretuoti kaip viduramžių žvejo kapą. Publikacija siekiama praturtinti šiuo metu Lietuvoje sparčiai plėtojamus viduramžių laikotarpio žmonių kasdienio gyvenimo, buities ir verslų tyrimus unikalia archeologinių tyrimų medžiaga., The article contains information about grave No. 27, which dates back to the second half of the fourteenth – the fifteenth century, located in the ward of Turgeliai of Šalčininkai district, near the state border between Lithuania and Belarus. In this grave, a person (a man aged 30–40) is buried with burial items characteristic of that period and one completely uncharacteristic and unique burial item, a large copper-alloy fishing hook. The burial of the dead in the Paūdronys burial site was carried out according to essentially Christian customs, predominantly with the head of the deceased at the western end of the grave. Unlike in a whole series of contemporaneous Lithuanian burial sites where the old pre-Christian burial customs are even more evident, no weapons, clay pots with food, bird bones, or other burial items characteristic of the period in question were found here. Paūdronys is located close (about 12 km) to the important historic settlement of Medininkai with an important castle, where one of the first parishes in Lithuania was established and a church built as early as 1391. Therefore it is likely that the activities of Catholic priests and the Christianisation processes were quite rapid in these environs in the fourteenth–the early fifteenth century. Grave No. 27 is badly damaged, with only part of the skeleton of the deceased preserved. The deceased was buried lying on his back, with outstretched legs, head to the west at 250 degrees. No traces of the coffin were observed. The person buried in the grave is a man aged 30–40. An iron knife with a tang, its edge pointing toward the feet and the point towards the right shoulder, was found above the left pelvic bone. Two iron buckles were found side by side near the left pelvic bone, at the proximal end of the femur. An iron D-shaped buckle with a tongue was found on the outside of the pelvis. A second iron buckle, with a brass tongue, was found just 0.5 cm away from the first buckle, a little further inside the pelvis. The second buckle is badly corroded and crumbled. An iron rosette-shaped piece of plating was found on the femur within 10 cm of the buckles (and the proximal end of the left femur). The plating was probably attached to a leather purse, but no other traces of it were found. An iron chain link was found on the inner side of the right femur, near the proximal end. A well-preserved brass fishing hook, with a barb and an eye for a line, was found within 5 cm of both buckles towards the outside of the tomb. The hook is massive, for catching predatory fish. Its length is 42 mm. The hook is made of a copper alloy containing 82.1% copper, 14.4% tin, with minor impurities of zinc, iron, lead arsenic, and nickel. The shank and the point have a rectangular cross-section; the eyelet is flattened, with an eye for the line in it. With the exception of the fishing hook, the set of burial items is quite typical of Lithuanian burial sites of the late fourteenth–the fifteenth century. The fishing hook enables interpretations of this burial.

Straipsnio tikslas - aptarti internetinio "Lietuvos teritorijos lenkiškų vietovardžių normatyvinio žodyno" prielaidas. Minėtas žodynas yra norminis, jame pateikiami sprendimai dėl lenkiškų atitikmenų dabartinių lietuviškų vietovardžių Lietuvos teritorijoje, jų linksniavimo, darinių, ypač būdvardžių ir gyventojų pavadinimų taisyklingumo. Žodyne yra savivaldybių ir rajonų miestų ir miestelių pavadinimai, taip pat Vilniaus, Šalčininkų, Trakų, Švenčionių ir Širvintų rajonų, t.y. Vilniaus krašto, kuriame tankiausiai gyvena lenkų mažuma Lietuvoje, vietovių, turinčių daugiau negu 20 gyventojų pavadinimai. Taip pat atrinkti vietovardžiai iš kitų Lietuvos vietovių, svarbių istorine, kultūrine ir socialine prasme (pvz., iš Kauno apylinkių). The aim of the article is to elaborate on the principles of the online edition of "The Normative Dictionary of the Polish Place Names from the area of Lithuania". This is a normative dictionary. It contains Polish equivalents of contemporary Lithuanian place names from the area of Lithuania, their declination, adjectives and names of residents. The dictionary contains names of districts, towns and villages, counting over 20 residents from Vilnius, Šalčininkai, Trakai, Švenčionys and Širvintos regions. The dictionary includes names from the Vilnius area inhabited by numerous Polish minority, and selected names from different parts of Lithuania, important in terms of history, culture and society (e.g. from the area of Lauda and the vicinity of Kaunas). The article outlines the structure of the dictionary, looks into difficulties encountered in its development and supplements this study with a brief description of the Dictionary and of the present state of work on it.

Šiame straipsnyje siekiu ištirti, kaip Šalčininkų rajone gyvenantys ir vietiniais save identifikuojantys žmonės suvokia identiteto ribą tarp vietinių ir atvažiavusiųjų. Remiantis biografiniais interviu, surinktais etnografinio tyrimo metu, parodoma, kad istorinės aplinkybės ir dažna valstybinės priklausomybės kaita turėjo įtakos žmonių skirstymuisi į vietinius ir atvažiavusiuosius. Atskleidžiama, kaip skirtingų kartų žmonės, gyvenantys Šalčininkų rajone, supranta šį skirstymą. In this article, I seek to investigate how people living in the Šalčininkai district perceive the cultural boundary between locals and newcomers. Based on biographical interviews collected during the ethnographic field research, I argue that historical circumstances and frequent changes in state affiliation have influenced the drawing of the cultural boundary between locals and newcomers. In the article, I present how this division is understood by people of different generations living in the Šalčininkai district. The cultural boundary between locals and newcomers is very important to the oldest generation (born before World War II). People who grew up during Soviet times understand this boundary and its significance, but pay less attention to it. The youngest generation (people born around 1990) perceive this cultural boundary as a useless remnant of the past and want to distance themselves from it.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjamos šiuolaikinės baltarusių kalbos tarmės, funkcionuojančios pietryčių Lietuvos Šalčininkų rajone. Šios tarmės iki šiol nebuvo kalbininkų kompleksinių tyrimų objektu. Tiriamoji medžiaga – garso įrašai, atlikti autoriaus keleto dialektologijos ekspedicijų metu XXI a. pradžioje, ir kitų tyrėjų įrašai. Pristatoma tarmių struktūra (pagrindinės fonetikos, morfologijos, sintaksės savybės), aprašoma leksika ir iš dalies frazeologija. Svarbus tyrimo aspektas – regiono daugiakalbė sociolingvistinė situacija. Paaiškėjo, kad šio regiono baltarusiškų tarmų struktūra gerai išsilaikiusi. Baltarusijos dialektologai priskiria Vilniaus rajono tarmes pietvakarių tarmių grupei, tačiau čia aptikta fonetikos, morfologijos, sintaksės ypatybių, būdingų pietryčių tarmėms, centrinėms tarmėms, pietvakarių Gardino ir Baranovičių tarmių grupei, taip pat dviejų dialektinių zonų (Vakarų ir Šiaurės vakarų) tarmėms. Šio regiono tarmėms šimtmečius darė įtaką lietuvių ir lenkų kalbos. Reikšminiai žodžiai: dialektologija, baltarusiškos tarmės Lietuvoje, baltų ir slavų kalbų paribys, kalbų kontaktai, skoliniai. The aim of the article is to present contemporary Belarusian dialects in south-eastern Lithuania (in the Šalčininkai region), which have not been the subject of comprehensive linguistic research so far. The basis of the analysis is mainly the author’s own materials and materials taped by other dialectologists. The structure of these Belarusian dialects (selected features in phonetics, morphology, syntax, vocabulary and phraseology) as well as the sociolinguistic aspect of their use in a multilingual environment are demonstrated in the article. The analysis of the collected material shows that the structure of Belarusian dialects in the study area is well-preserved. Belarusian dialectologists regard the Belarusian dialect in the Vilnius Region as a south-western dialect, which should be described in detail. In the statements of interlocutors, one can note the phonetic, morphological and syntactic features typical of: the south-eastern dialect, the Central Belarusian dialect, the Grodno-Baranovichy group of the south-western dialects and the two so-called dialectal zones: western and north-western. On the one hand, it is a territory shaped by two dialectal massifs and one dialect group, on the other hand, it has been influenced by Baltic and Polish for hundreds of years. Particularly noteworthy is the lexis. Decades of coexistence of Belarusians, Lithuanians and Poles on this territory contributed to the fact that in Belarusian dialects there are numerous borrowings from Lithuanian and Polish (and their dialects). Šiame straipsnyje siekiama ištirti būdus, kuriais Šalčininkų rajono gyventojai identifikuojasi su gyvenamąja vieta, darant prielaidą, jog socialinė atmintis, ypač krašto kultūroje gyvuojantys pasakojimai, daro didžiausią įtaką regioninio identiteto formavimuisi ir išlaikymui. Darbe aptariama, kaip vietiniai, šiame rajone gimę ir augę žmonės, brėžia jo kultūrines ribas. Teorinėje dalyje apibūdinamos naratyvų, regioninio identiteto ir socialinės atminties sąvokos siekiant šias sąvokas instrumentalizuoti. Nustatyta, jog tarp krašto žmonių galima išskirti du identifikavimosi su gyvenamuoju rajonu modelius: 1) kraštietiškas identitetas, kuris yra archajiškas ir laikomas neprestižiniu; 2) kraštietiško identiteto derinimas su etniniu identitetu. Raktiniai žodžiai: regioninis identitetas, socialinė atmintis, naratyvas, kraštietiškumas. In this research, the term ‘region’ is understood as an area slightly bigger than the Šalčininkai district. The ‘region’ is an etic term used in literature; however, locals use the emic term kraštas (‘region’ in Lithuanian) to describe the region. The Šalčininkai region crosses the Lithuanian and Belarusian borders, although the Šalčininkai district is an administrative division of Lithuania. The district exists administratively, but it has very little in common with the way locals understand the Šalčininkai region. Administratively, the Šalčininkai district is a smaller and more clearly defined territory; and in practice, it has very little in common with the way local people understand ‘their territory’. The Šalčininkai region, as it is understood and defined by locals, is defined by settlements such as Kalesninkai (Šalčininkai district), Varėna, Vilnius and Vievis (Elektrėnai district) in Lithuania. In Belarus, ‘their region’ is defined by the Lyda, Biniakoniai, Varonovas, Girianioniai, Ivia and Sūbotniki settlements. The Russian, Polish, Belarusian and ‘simple’ (in Polish po prostu) languages are widely used in the region. A lack of knowledge of the Lithuanian language sometimes creates linguistic barriers between older inhabitants of the Šalčininkai region and the society of the rest of Lithuania. The different historical experiences, and the geographical, economic, political, linguistic and cultural circumstances, from the rest of Lithuania and Belarus have resulted in the formation of a regional identity among local inhabitants. According to locals, belonging to Poland during the interwar period, and later becoming part of Lithuania and Belarus, did not allow these people to develop a loyalty to one particular country, and resulted in the cultural distinctiveness of the region. The poor-quality soil, and the weak and underdeveloped rural economy, created economic differences between the Šalčininkai region and the rest of Lithuania. These differences are felt not only by the locals, but also by people from elsewhere in Lithuania when they visit the Šalčininkai district. During the 20th century, military conflicts, discrimination and persecution based on ethnicity took place in the Šalčininkai region. People share narratives about how people were discriminated against, robbed and even murdered because of their ethnicity. Ethnic tensions were particularly high during the Second World War and after the war. Because of this, many people avoided identifying clearly with one particular ethnic group, and chose to call themselves ‘locals’. According to locals, this type of identification was the safest during difficult and dangerous times. Theoretical connections between the social memory, narratives and regional identity are discussed in this article. It is argued that the socio-cultural memory, especially expressed as narratives and shared by local inhabitants, has the biggest impact on constructing the regional identity. So the different ways in which the locals construct cultural boundaries between ‘their region’ and other areas are presented and analysed in this article. The empirical data for this article was gathered during field research conducted between 2015 and 2018 in the Šalčininkai district. Exploratory research was conducted in 2015 by participating in public celebrations in the town of Šalčininkai. In-depth fieldwork was conducted from 2016 to 2018, mostly during the summer months, in June, July and August. During the fieldwork, the author spent from one week to ten days in Šalčininkai, visiting different towns and villages in the region. During the field research, participant observation and life story interviews were conducted in the following areas: Šalčininkai, Eišiškės, Dieveniškės, Kalesninkai, Ureliai, Jašiūnai, Rimašiai, Poškonys, Jančiūnai (Šalčininkai district) Kaniava, Rakai (Varėna district), Šilėnai and Vilnius (Vilnius district). Only local people who were born and grew up in the region were selected for interviews. Topics such as family life, local traditions, the locals’ history, and connections with Poland and Belarus (where a lot of friends and relatives of local people I talked to live) were discussed. The most widespread identification strategies in the Šalčininkai region are identified based on the data gathered. 1. Identifying as ‘local’. This identification is the most common among the older inhabitants, who happen to be the least educated. This type of identity is looked down upon by the younger and more educated people in the region. 2. Identifying as ‘local’ and possessing one clearly defined ethnic identity. This type of identification is most common among the younger generation who grew up and were educated in independent Lithuania. A Polish or Lithuanian identity is the most common and the most prestigious among these people. The size of the country, its economic and political power, and the higher living standards in Poland make Polish identity prestigious. The possibility to belong to the dominant ethnic group in the country, and the dominant position of the Lithuanian language, makes Lithuanian identity prestigious as well. Šiame straipsnyje pristatomas kodų kaitos ir jos funkcijų feisbuke skelbiamuose įrašuose ir komentaruose tyrimas, atsižvelgiant į lyties veiksnį. Tyrėjai René Appelas ir Pieteris Muyskenas išskyrė šešias kodų kaitos funkcijas: referentinę, valdomąją, tapatybinę, metaforinę, metalingvistinę ir poetinę. Tiriant buvo siekiama išsiaiškinti, kurias iš pateiktų funkcijų kodų kaita atlieka iš Šalčininkų rajono kilusių jaunų žmonių feisbuko diskurse, nustatyti vyraujančias funkcijas merginų ir vaikinų paskyrose bei įvertinti visų rastų kodų kaitos funkcijų atvejų dažnumo panašumus lyties požiūriu. Tiriamąją medžiagą sudarė 1048 įrašai ir komentarai iš 30 feisbuko paskyrų, paskelbti 2017–2018 m. Jaunų žmonių amžius – 20–30 m., juos vienija mokyklos (lenkų) kalba. Feisbuko įrašai ir komentarai tiriami taikant kokybinės kalbinės ir kiekybinės analizės metodus. Tyrimo rezultatai rodo, kad funkciniu požiūriu kodų kaita merginų ir vaikinų feisbuko diskurse yra panaši. Abiejų lyčių paskyrose pačių funkcijų skaičius yra vienodas, tačiau skiriasi tų funkcijų dažnumas. Code-switching is an interesting sociolinguistic phenomenon characteristic to bilingual and multilingual communities. It involves the use of different languages within the boundaries of a single sentence or between sentences in one specific domain or discourse. It is an individual language choice determined by such factors as the topic, the situation, the participants of a conversation, their interrelationship, emotions, and demonstration of one or more identities. On this basis, Appel and Muysken (2005) identified six functions of code-switching: referential, directive, expressive (related to identity), phatic (metaphorical), metalinguistic and poetic. This paper sets out to achieve several goals: (a) to find out which of these functions appear in the Facebook discourse of young people originated from Šalčininkai district, (b) to identify the main types of functions in girls’ and boys’ profiles, and (c) to study the frequency of the functions with regard to the variable of gender. The research material consists of 1 048 posts and comments published in 2017–2018 and obtained from 30 Facebook profiles. The dataset represents young people aged between 20 and 30 years, with Polish as their school language. Facebook posts and comments are investigated from a qualitative and quantitative perspective. The research results show that functionally code-switching is similar in both girls’ and boys’ Facebook discourse. On the profiles of both genders, the number of functions is identical, but the frequency of these functions varies. In the datasets of both genders, the most predominant function is directive, which appears when languages change depending on the language chosen by the interlocutor. This research could be informative for sociolinguists who investigate electronic discourse of young people from South East Lithuania and for those who focus on how environment influences the emergence of different linguistic codes on Facebook. The research could also stimulate greater interest of sociolinguists in the conversational features of residents in Šalčininkai district. Straipsnyje pirmą kartą lietuviškoje istoriografijoje pristatoma italų kilmės XIX a. architektūrinės keramikos meistrų brolių Bonafede kūryba ir jų meninis palikimas Lietuvoje, kuris susijęs su Vilniuje, Šv. Jurgio skvere (dab. V. Kudirkos aikštė) 1865 m. iškilusia ir 1919 m. nugriauta Šv. Aleksandro Neviškio koplyčia. Dėl sąsajų su carinės Rusijos valdžios represijomis, statinys nors ir ne kartą minėtas publikacijose, tačiau nebuvo Lietuvos dailės ir architektūros tyrėjų išsamiai analizuotas. Be to, XIX a. U p.-XX a. pr. šaltiniai, kuriuose aprašoma koplyčia, nemini keraminės apdailos autorių pavardės. Atribucija tapo galima tik atradus signuotas keramines plokštes Lietuvos dailės muziejuje bei sužinojus, kad Mikniškių cerkvėje (Šalčininkų r.) saugomos šių meistrų sukurtos ikonos. Be to, svarbiu instrumentu tapo Sankt Peterburgo restauratorių bei dailėtyrininkų publikacijos, kuriose broliai Bonafede pristatomi kaip mozaikos ir meninio stiklo akademinės mokyklos pradininkai XIX a. Rusijoje. Svarbu tai, kad Vilniaus koplyčia šiems meistrams buvo jų technologinių eksperimentų įkūnijimo vieta. Čia jie pirmą kartą išbandė naują techniką, kuri, kaip vėliau paaiškėjo, visiškai pasiteisino. The article, for the first time in Lithuanian historiography, introduces the works and artistic heritage in Lithuania of the brothers of an Italian descent, XIX"' century architectural pottery masters named Bonafede. Their artistic heritage is closely connected to Saint Alexande r Nevsky Chapel, that wa s built in 1865 at a Saint Jurgis Square, Vilnius (now V. Kudirka square) and demolished in 1919. The aforementioned building, despite being numerous times mentioned in variuos publications, wa s never comprehensively analysed by Lithuanian art and architecture researchers, because of its connection with the repressions done by the tsarist Russian authorities. Furthermore, in the sources (XIX"' century second halfXX"' century first half) where the chapel is mentioned, the names of its ceramic decoration authors are never disclosed. The attribution became possible only when the signed ceramic plates were found at Lithuanian Art museum and when it was learned that the icons created by these artists are being kept at Mikniškiai church (Šalčininkai district). Furthermore, a very important aspect became the publications, made by St. Petersburg restorers and art critics in which brothers Bonafede are presented as mosaic and art glass academic school pioneers in XIXth century in Russia. A very important point is that Vilnius Chapel became a technological experimentation place for these artists. Here they for the first time used a new technique, which, as it turned out later, was very successful.

The question of whether there is a reason to worry in the case of Lithuania can only be answered by knowing and analysing the relevant premises and prevailing language attitudes. The article presents a detailed documentation of an experimental study on language attitudes conducted in Lithuania between 2014 and 2016. Based on selected results, it provides a description of sociolinguistic profiles of Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šalčininkai and Visaginas.

Straipsnyje aptariama, kaip mokyklų skirtingomis mokomosiomis kalbomis bendruomenių nariai vertina mokyklos mokomosios kalbos, tautinio tapatumo ir lygių galimybių švietime sąveiką. Tekste apibendrinami dviejų skirtingais laikotarpiais etniškai mišriuose Lietuvos regionuose vykusių tyrimų duomenys. Tyrimo metu buvo atlikti interviu su mokyklų lietuvių, rusų ir lenkų kalbomis bendruomenių nariais (administracijos darbuotojais, mokytojais). Duomenys interpretuojami pasitelkiant Rogers Brubaker, Stephen May, Will Kymlicka teorines prieigas apie tautinių mažumų teises, tautinės mažumos ir daugumos sąveikos modelius. Straipsnyje teigiama, jog mokyklose skirtingomis mokomosiomis kalbomis konstruojamos iš dalies skirtingos socialinės įtraukties bei socialinio mobilumo vizijos ir instrumentai., The language, ethnic identity and equal opportunities are important dimensions in discussions on minority rights (May 2003, 2012) and this paper focuses on how these issues are seen by informants at the schools with minority (Polish and Russian) and state (Lithuanian) language of instruction in Lithuania. The schools with Lithuanian, Polish, and Russian language of instruction are funded by state and education in national minority language is guaranteed by the Lithuanian laws. The paper focuses on how informants at the schools with different languages of instruction perceive the interrelation between school teaching language, ethnic identity and graduates’ prospects to get enrolled in the university studies. The paper is based on empirical data collected during two research projects. The first research project took place in April 2013 – June 2014 in the localities of Southeastern Lithuania, i.e. in Šalčininkai, Švenčionys, Pabradė, and Eišiškės. The second project was carried out in July 2016 – May 2018 in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, and Visaginas. The sites where the research was conducted are multi-ethnic and the schools with Lithuanian, Russian, Polish languages of instruction function there. The interviews were conducted with members of administration and teachers at these schools. At the schools with Lithuanian language of instruction the author conducted 17 interviews, with Polish language of instruction – 9, with Russian language of instruction – 17, with Russian-Polish language of instruction 1 and with Russian-Lithuanian language of instruction – 2. The data are interpreted in the framework of the theoretical perspectives offered by Rogers Brubaker (1996, 2011), Stephen May (2003, 2012), and Will Kymlicka (2000) on the state policies and minority rights, minority-majority hierarchies and relations. The findings are contextualized in the framework of other research conducted in Lithuania on multicultural education (Saugėnienė 2003; Reingardė, Vasiliauskaitė, Erentaitė 2010; Tamošiūnas 2000, 2001 and 2003), school choice and social mobility (Leončikas 2007), and language as a key instrument in the construction of social boundaries and hierarchies between minority and majority groups (Beresnevičiūtė 2005). The author argues that informants at the schools with different languages of instruction construct different narratives on the interrelation of school teaching language and equal opportunities, and they emphasize different instruments of social inclusion. The members of schools with Lithuanian language of instruction support the policies of “nationalizing state” (Brubaker 1996, 2011) by perceiving the Lithuanian language as the main tool for inclusion, integration and social 58 KULTŪRA IR VISUOMENĖ. The majority of informants from the schools with the minority language of instruction emphasize the importance of state language for social integration and equal opportunities, but question it as a single tool in these processes. The informants from schools with Polish language of instruction emphasize Polish language as the main marker of ethnic identity and perceive bilingualism (competences of Polish and Lithuanian languages) or multilingualism (Polish, Lithuanian and Russian) as important for integration in different and particularly in multi-ethnic regions of Lithuania and as enabling studies in Lithuania or Poland. The members of schools with Russian language of instruction emphasize Russian language as the main tool to enable social inclusion and education for pupils from Russian-speaking families, as well as a key element of Russian ethnic identity. However, Lithuanian language is perceived as an important instrument of social mobility as well. The author argues that the perception of bilingualism or multilingualism (competencies of a few languages used by local minorities) as a positive and targeted aim should be promoted not only at the schools with minority languages of instruction, but also at the schools with the state language of instruction. This changing narrative would enable to question symbolic hierarchies among linguistic and social groups (cf. Bourdieau 1991 cited in Beresnevičiūtė 2005; Beresnevičiūtė 2005) and at the same time would address the multi-cultural and multi-ethnic composition of school communities.

Straipsnyje tiriami dialektologiniai ir sociolingvistiniai duomenys, surinkti XX a. antrojoje pusėje. Analizuojama paskutiniųjų pietų aukštaičių patarmės atstovų, gyvenusių Šalčininkų rajono apylinkėse, kalba. Pagrindinis šio sinchroninio tyrimo tikslas – atskleisti tiriamojoje teritorijoje, kurioje buvo ir tebėra vartojama ne vien lietuvių kalba, sintaksinių konstrukcijų kaitą: apibūdinti prielinksninių konstrukcijų atsiradimo vietoj linksnio atvejus, nustatyti galimas šio reiškinio plitimo priežastis. Darbe remiamasi Vytauto Ambrazo (2006) šia tema išdėstytais apibendrinimais. XX a. antrojoje pusėje Šalčininkų rajono apylinkių lietuvių šnektos atstovai gyveno aktyvių kontaktų zonoje. Respondentai nuo seno gerai mokėjo ir aktyviai vartojo kelias kalbas: lietuvių šnektą (priklauso pietų aukštaičių patarmei), vietinės baltarusių tarmės variantą, vadinamą poprostu (‘paprastąją kalbą’), vietinį lenkų kalbos variantą ir rusų kalbą. Pokalbių metu visos šios kalbos buvo natūraliai kaitaliojamos tarpusavyje – vyko aktyvi kodų kaita. Dėl ilgalaikių kontaktų su slavų kalbomis Šalčininkų apylinkių lietuvių šnektoje ėmė formuotis ir plisti nauji kalbos reiškiniai. Šiame straipsnyje siekiama išanalizuoti laipsnišką naujų sintaksinių konstrukcijų plitimą. Aiškinamasi, kaip ir kodėl šios konstrukcijos įsitvirtina lietuvių šnektoje. Tyrime konstatuojama, kad tiriamojoje lietuvių šnektoje dažnai vartojami prielinksniai – ant, dėl, į, po – junginyje su linksniu įgauna naujų reikšmių. Daugelis tų reikšmių yra atsiradusios kaimynų slavų kalbų pavyzdžiu, todėl lietuvių kalbai dažnai yra svetimos. Intensyvių kontaktų sąlygomis skatinamąjį vaidmenį čia atliko vietinė baltarusių tarmė. Prielinksninės konstrukcijos dar nėra visiškai išstūmusios tiriamajai lietuvių šnektai būdingų atitinkamų neprielinksninių. Jos čia įsitvirtinę ne vietoj grynųjų linksnių, o greta jų. Tiriamos lietuvių šnektos sintaksės kaitą skatina ir bendrinė lietuvių kalba. The dialectological and sociolinguistic material from the Southern Aukštaitian borderland is under the investigation in this article. The most recent records of the speaker of the Lithuanian Southern Aukštaitian in Šalčininkai district are analyzed in order to study the changes in the syntax. The peripheral area of the Southern Aukštaitian located in Šalčininkai district is surrounded or, speaking more precisely, in contact with languages other than Lithuanian, i. e. Belarusian and Polish, and relatively recently with the Russian language as well. The purpose of this article is to reveal the process of interception and convergence of syntactic compounds in the Lithuanian dialect of Šalčininkai district. The paper is based on ideas by Vytautas Ambrazas (2006) on this topic. Because of continuous language contact a lot of variants in the present Lithuanian dialect of Šalčininkai region have developed. For example, very frequently the prepositions ant ‘on’, dėl ‘for’, į ‘to’, po ‘after’ used in combination with case tend to acquire more specific meanings. A lot of them become analogous to those found in the neighbouring Slavic languages and thus are often alien for Lithuanian. The impact of standard Lithuanian cannot be totally disregarded either. The Lithuanian and Slavic languages are in active contact in these neighbourhoods, that is’ why they tend to develop the same patterns and constructions. In many cases the local Belarusian dialect, known as the poprostu (‘plain language’ – a local variant of the Belarusian northwestern dialect), plays a stimulating role here. Relatively recently all three contact languages, i.e. Lithuanian, Belarusian and Polish, have acquired numerous lexical and grammatical borrowings in the dialects of Šalčininkai neighborhoods. This is one of the conditions for accelerating the incorporation and adoption of alien syntactic patterns in the Lithuanian language. In intense contact, borrowing is not limited to several different patterns because syntactic rules could be adopted as well. Surely, the archaic constructions could acquire entirely new semantic content. The prepositional phrases have been adopted and used not instead of pure cases, but rather alongside with them.

Straipsnyje analizuojama XX a. pabaigoje ir XXI a. pradžioje surinkta dialektologinė ir sociolingvistinė medžiaga iš trijų Šalčininkų rajono punktų. Nagrinėjamos natūralaus bendravimo situacijos vykstant kodų kaitai, kai kalbėtojai gerai moka ir vienu metu vartoja kelias kalbas: vietinę baltarusių tarmę, vadinamą poprostu, lenkų kalbos atmainą, rusų kalbą ir lietuvių kalbą. Pagrindinis šio darbo tikslas: atskleisti dominuojančių vietinių kalbų atmainų – baltarusių, lenkų ir rečiau (arba pasyviai) vartojamos lietuvių – aprašyti pagrindinius fonetinės konvergencijos atvejus, iškelti šių reiš-kinių priežastis.Tyrimas grindžiamas kalbų sąveikos tyrėjo Valerijaus Čekmono teorija: iš vienos kalbos į kitą perei-nama vadovaujantis tam tikromis taisyklėmis, kurias galima aprašyti algoritmais. Taikant šį algoritmų metodą atskleidžiami kai kurie fonetiniai dėsningumai ir parodoma lietuvių kalbos įtaka vietinių slavų kalbų artikuliacijai.Tyrimas parodė, kad Šalčininkų apylinkėse funkcionuojančių kalbų atmainų fonetikos reiškinių su-panašėjimo priežastys daugiausia yra sociolingvistinės.Vietinės lenkų kalbos ir baltarusių tarmės fo-netikos ypatybės yra labai panašios arba sutampa. Lietuvių tarmėje vartojamus minkštuosius priebal-sius informantai taip pat taria ir kalbėdami vietinėmis slavų kalbomis. Užfiksuota baltarusių ir lenkų šnektoms nebūdingų atvejų, kai intensyviai painiojami priebalsiai, tikėtina, kad tai – vienas iš lietuvių substrato požymių. The present article addresses the principal phonetic phenomena of the languages used in borderland areas and their interaction. It analyzes of dialectological and sociolinguistic material col-lected from the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century from three points in the Šalčininkai district. It analyzes the phonetic convergence of the dominating local language varieties — Belarusian, Polish and Lithuanian — and establishes the tendencies of this process. The situations of natural communication in the context of code-switching are analyzed in the study: when the speakers are fluent and use several languages at the same time by actively switching between them in conversations. The research is, based on the theory proposed by Valerijus Čekmonas, the researcher of the interaction of languages and Slavicist: the speaker switches between languages according to certain rules, which can be described by algorithms. Based on this method of algorithms, the study reveals the phonetic tendencies and proves a very important role and influence of the now passively used Lithuanian language on the articulation of contemporary Slavic languages.The research showed that the reasons of convergence of phonetic phenomena of the language varieties functioning in the borderland areas are mainly sociolinguistic. After comparing the phonetic peculiari-ties of local Polish and Belarusian dialects, it turned out that the phonetics of both dialects is essentially the same. The informants pronounce the soft consonants used in the local Lithuanian dialect in the same way as they are pronounced when speaking local Slavic dialects. The cases, which are not typical of Belarusian and Polish dialects, when consonants are intensively confused, were recorded; it is likely a feature of the Lithuanian substratum.

Kaip rodo tyrimo duomenys, 2/3 Vilniaus krašto moksleivių Tėvyne pirmoje vietoje nurodė Lietuvą, o ketvirtadalis – antroje vietoje. 8 proc. apklaustųjų iš viso neįvardino Lietuvos savo Tėvyne. Gana ryškiai skiriasi lietuvių ir lenkų požiūris. Jei 3/4 apklaustųjų lietuvių Tėvynė pirmoje vietoje yra Lietuva ir dar beveik kas penktam – antroje, tai taip nurodžiusių lenkų yra atitinkamai 6 iš 10 ir trečdalis. 7 proc. lietuvių ir 8 proc. lenkų Lietuvos nenurodė Tėvyne nei pirmoje, nei antroje vietoje. Tyrimo rezultatai rodo didesnį Lenkijos negu Lietuvos poveikį Vilniaus krašto moksleivių tapatybės formavimuisi., The article was inspired by the visit of Pope Francis on September 22-25 in 2018 to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. During the visit, the Pope Francis spoke about the idea of preserving national identity: “It is obvious that from the political point of view you are part of the West... but the part of that tragic history came from the West – from Germans, Poles... To have this in mind means to know that the firmness is necessary, the firmness not only to belonging to the West, but also the firmness of having the identity of ourselves" (https://www.lrytas.lt/pasaulis/įvykiai/ 2018/09/26/news/popiezius-pranciskus/). Mentioning the Poles, the Pope apparently had in the mind the occupation of Vilnius. The research of the pupils of South-Eastern Lithuania, conducted in 2016 by the Lithuanian Institute of Culture Policy, which was headed by the author of this article, allows us to look at the current situation. Since this publication is dedicated for the issue of the social integration in Lithuania, the study on influence of the Poland on the identity of Polish pupils may be relevant. The subject of the whole study was broader - the cultural needs of pupils, but the influence of Poland was revealed indirectly: by identifying the difference in participation in excursions of Lithuanians, Poles and Russians to Poland. In April – May 2016, 1141 pupils were questioned in 19 schools in Vilnius, Švenčionys and Šalčininkai districts. 66% of the respondents in Vilnius district in the first place identified Lithuania as their fatherland, 26% identified Lithuania as their fatherland in the second place, while did not identified Lithuania as their fatherland 8% of pupils. The question is: "If the every twelve person who does not indicate Lithuania as their fatherland is big or small number?" In our opinion, it big number, since the same 8 per cent of respondents in the first place as their fatherland named the other country. Most often it was mentioned Poland, sometimes Russia or Belorussia. In addition, almost every third respondent in the second place considers his or her fatherland another (not Lithuania) country. The views of Lithuanians and Poles are rather different. If for 75% of the Lithuanians respondents, Lithuania are in the first place as their fatherland, and for 18% in the second. Meanwhile, 59% of Lithuanian Poles said that their fatherland is Lithuania in the first place, and for 33%, Lithuania as their fatherland is in the second place (in the first place as their fatherland indicated Poland). 7% of Lithuanians and 8% of Poles did not indicate Lithuania as their fatherland either in the first or second place. Poles in the schools with education in Polish language have a much better chances to visit Poland, and the number of visits in Poland is directly correlated with the naming of Poland as their fatherland. Almost 2/3 of the Polish pupils respondents who went on a trip to Poland, indicated another country as their fatherland (an absolute majority indicated Poland). Only one-third Lithuanians who went on a trip to Poland, indicated another country as their fatherland. Of course, an excursions to Poland be considered a decisive factor in such an identification with Poland, but this data quite clearly highlight the differences in the identification of the Lithuanians and the Poles. Thus, a data of representative study of pupils from Southeastern Lithuania (Vilnius, Švenčionys and Šalčininkai districts) raise the question: is the Pole is a Lithuanian Pole (a citizen of Lithuania), or a Pole, who live in Lithuania and identifying with Poland? According to the data of a qualitative survey, the inactivity of Lithuanian state institutions does not encourage the development of the attitude of Lithuanian Pole as a citizen of Lithuania. Attitude to identifying Lithuania as a fatherland is often treated as old approach, does not relevant to the present-day Europe. Often, a pupils living in Vilnius region naming Poland as his fatherland. Poland's support for schools with Polish language education is more effective than the influence of Lithuania itself in Vilnius region. Obviously, there are still dominated two different concepts: Poland is based on the concept of one country – the two Republics, where Lithuania was in the role of a younger brother, and Lithuania is “get stuck” in the memories of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The intensity of these two different concepts can hardly be changed in the nearest future. It is necessary to realize that for the Poles who lives in the Vilnius region their own village or town are primarily considered as their fatherland. This is not only Lithuanian, but also their land. However, they live in Lithuania, therefore, must be formed a perception that their fatherland is not only a native land, but also Lithuania. As the qualitative research shows, unfortunately, this formation is only imitated, as many measures on the development of South-Eastern Lithuania are only adopted, but not implemented in the practice.

Remiantis valstybinės statistikos, archyvų bei gyventojų apklausos duomenimis, straipsnyje aiškinamasi, kaip nuo XX a. vidurio iki mūsų dienų mokyklų su tam tikra dėstomąja kalba tinklą ir apskritai švietimo padėtį Pietryčių Lietuvos rajonuose lėmė ne tik ten nuolat kitusi gyventojų tautinė sudėtis, bet ir vykdyta sovietinės valdžios bei vykdoma dabartinė Lietuvos Respublikos politika. Aiškinamasi, kaip kito skirtingų tautybių gyventojų etnokultūrinės orientacijos. Konstatuojama, kad gyventojų imigracija iš Baltarusijos ir kitų sovietinių respublikų į Pietryčių Lietuvos regionus buvo bene svarbiausias regiono slavėjimo veiksnys sovietinės okupacijos laikotarpiu. Nemenką vaidmenį vaidino ir kryptinga sovietinės valdžios vykdyta regiono rusinimo politika. Atkūrus nepriklausomą Lietuvos valstybę, visų tautybių gyventojų etninės saviraiškos ir kultūrinių poreikių užtikrinimas regione pamažu keičiasi pozityvia kryptimi. Vis dėlto lietuvių tautybės gyventojai Šalčininkų ir Vilniaus rajonuose lieka mažuma ir dabar, ne tik demografine, bet ir žmogaus teisių užtikrinimo prasme. Straipsnio tikslas : siekiama parodyti, kaip teritorijos priklausomybė keitė mokyklų tinklą, o šio kaita darė įtaką ir krašto gyventojų sudėčiai po Antrojo pasaulinio karo. Kartu glaustai bandoma apžvelgti ir kitus tuo metu krašto etnodemografinę struktūrą lėmusius veiksnius. The ethno-demographic structure of the people in Southeastern Lithuania, the changes in this field and the factors that have caused them, attracted not only the attention of the researchers: this is a topic that the politicians and publicists still continue to discuss; certain nongovernmental organizations and various interest groups are constantly concerned with it. The elite and activists of individual ethnic communities still do not lose sight of this topic. Depending on the accumulated knowledge, the sources used and the outlook, the different evaluators do not agree on the factors and reasons for the ethno-demographic structure of Southeastern Lithuania. Usually, as the most important and sometimes even the only factor, the different evaluators see one of the historical or political phenomena: a biased educational system, the purposeful activities of several centuries of the Catholic Church clergy, the migration of the population or forced assimilation. However, with a closer look at the historical development of the region and the situation there, it can be said that all the factors listed here were quite significant and also the natural ethnic assimilation played and is now playing a certain role. All the factors mentioned here are reflected in the studies of linguists, historians, ethnologists and sociologists, and much attention is devoted to the development of the school network. However, from a scientific point of view, there were analyzed most of the problems faced by schools in Southeastern Lithuania before the Second World War, i.e. during the period when Vilnius region for nineteen years was under occupation by Poland.

Lietuvos mokslų akademijos Vrublevskių bibliotekoje saugomi kunigo Pranciškaus Tičkovskio rankraščiai, knygos, grafikos kūriniai ir ekslibrisai, senienos ir dantiraščiai, taip pat laiškai ir atvirukai, kurie XX a. ketvirtajame dešimtmetyje buvo atiduoti Vrublevskių bibliotekai. Devintajame dešimtmetyje iš nemažos kolekcijos ir asmeninio archyvo dalies, išsaugotos Bibliotekos Rankraščių skyriuje, buvo suformuotas Pranciškaus Tičkovskio fondas (F147). Tačiau kita kolekcijos dalis, apie kurią žinoma iš pavienių spaudinių ir grafikos kūrinių, dar nėra mums pažįstama. Straipsnio tikslas yra aptarti P. Tičkovskio kolekciją, surinktą skirtingais gyvenimo laikotarpiais, atskleisti šios kolekcijos ir archyvo ryšį. The Rare Book Department in the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences is home to the collection of Father Franciszek Tyczkowski (1891–1982), which features manuscripts, books, graphic art prints, bookplates, a collection of antiquities and a set of unique cuneiform tablets. Father Tyczkowski donated this collection and his personal archive to the Wroblewski Library, which had been founded in the early 20th century and opened to public in 1935. At that point there was not enough time to establish a proper Tyczkowski collection, and the latter was formed only in the eighties based on manuscripts and other documents which had fallen into the holdings of the Manuscript Department. The rest of the collection, whose existense may be deduced from individual publications and art prints, was split among different other collections and so is not always easily recognizable by researchers. Based on archival evidence, the article aims to characterize the Tyczkowski collection amassed and handed over to the library in the period from the second to the fourth decade of the 20th century, according special attention to chronological issues. The article also addresses the relation of this diverse collection to the Tyczkowski archive. Tyczkowski started collecting at a young age. Research shows a particular importance of his archive’s different sub-collections. They are likely tied to different periods in the collector’s life: to his studies at the University of Warsaw, and then, in the third decade, at the Pontifical Biblical Institute; to the St Archangel Michael Church at the Vilnius Bernardine Monastery, where he was rector until the mid-thirties; to the Akmenynė estate (the present Šalčininkai district) owned by the Reniger family and the construction of St. Therese of the Child Jesus Church in the late twenties. Acquired by Tyczkowski over the thirties, his bookplates make a separate sub-collection. Both the latter and a majority of letters addressed to Tyczkowski are a testimony to an active exchange of bookplates he maintained with collectors from Vilnius and Kaunas, from Warsaw and other Polish cities; as well as from Italy, Latvia, Portugal and other countries.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjamas lokalinis tradicinių dainų repertuaras statistikos požiūriu (bendrieji repertuaro funkcionavimo dėsningumai). Pavyzdžiu pasirinktas Šalčininkų rajono Mištūnų kaimo dainų repertuaras; tirti trys jo parametrai – žanras, geografinis paplitimas ir pateikėjas. Pasiūlyti kiekybinio apibendrinimo rodikliai – vidutinis variantų skaičius, individualūs viso ir bendro lokalinio repertuaro reprezentavimo rodikliai, individualaus repertuaro savitumo rodiklis ir kt. Žanrų skirstinys labai netolygus. Pavyzdžiui, vestuvinių dainų gerokai daugiau negu kitų žanrų, bet darbo dainų užrašyta vidutiniškai daugiau variantų. Daugiausia užrašytų poetinio teksto tipų randami didelėje Lietuvos dalyje, mažiau Dzūkijoje, dar mažiau sietini su lokalesne geografija. Pateikėjų repertuarus sąlygiškai galima suskirstyti į keturias persiklojančias grupes: „išsamus“ (platus repertuaras, dideli reprezentavimo ir savitumo rodikliai), „populiarus“ (vidutinio dydžio repertuaras, vidutinis reprezentavimo, vidutinis ar mažas savitumo rodikliai), „uždaras“ (negausus repertuaras, mažas reprezentavimo, bet gana didelis savitumo rodikliai), „atsitiktinis“ (labai menkas repertuaras; statistika nenagrinėtina dėl didelių paklaidų). Repertuarų grupių požymiai aiškinami repertuarų funkcionavimo, komunikavimo reiškiniais, dainininkų asmenybių tipais. The paper considers a local song repertoire from the statistical viewpoint, i.e. the general features of local repertoire. The repertoire of Mištūnai, Šalčininkai Dst., is chosen as an example. Three parameters of the repertoire are examined: genre, geographical distribution, and informant. A set of quantitative indexes is proposed: averaged number of variants, individual indexes of representation of the whole and common local repertoires, individual index of repertoire originality, and so on. Genre distribution is very uneven. For example, wedding songs apparently prevail, yet work songs are bigger in number of variants. The local repertoire is mostly spread all over Lithuania, to a lesser degree, in Dzūkija, and even less number of the songs can be attributed to more localized geography. Distribution of the repertoire in respect of the informants can be considered as roughly clustering in four groups: "comprehensive" (large repertoire, big values of representation and originality indexes), "popular" (moderate size of repertoire, moderate values of representation and originality indexes), "secluded" (spare repertoire, small value of representation index, yet quite big value of originality index), "accident" (very little repertoire; reliable statistics is hardly possible). The features of repertoire groups are commented based on the phenomena of repertoire functioning, communication, and on the performer personality types.

Lietuvių žiniasklaidoje kartkartėmis gvildenami Lietuvos lenkų lojalumo valstybei (Lietuvai) klausimai. Išsiskiria Lenko kortos tema, kuri neretai pasitelkiama kaip priemonė kalbėti apie menamą Lietuvos lenkų prisirišimą prie Lenkijos, arba dar daugiau – kalbama apie Lietuvos lenkų lojalumą Rusijai. Tuo tarpu apie Punske gyvenančių Lenkijos lietuvių savęs tapatinimąsi kalbama labiau idealizuotai, romantizuojant ir idealizuojant pastarųjų santykį su Lietuva. Esminis pilietinės visuomenės elementas yra lojalumas savai valstybei. Etnine prasme nevienalytėse paribio zonose išlieka aktuali įtampos pasireiškimo galimybė. Šiame straipsnyje, remiantis lauko tyrimo medžiaga, bus bandoma panagrinėti, kaip Lietuvos lenkai ir Lenkijos lietuviai, gyvenantys Šalčininkuose ir Punske, reflektuoja savo patirtis konstruodami santykius su kilmės valstybe/ėmis ir gyvenamąja valstybe, atskleidžiant ir kitus tapatumo aspektus – kalbą, kultūrą, praktikas ir pan. The article analyses the peculiarities of the construction of ethnic and national identity of two ethnic communities, and discusses their relationship with the countries of origin. The article is based on the theoretical anthropological concept of margin, which makes it possible to see the distinction of these groups in comparison with other ethnic communities. One of the cornerstones defining the identity of the two groups in question is their origin. Cultural elements such as the language are more emphasized by the Polish Lithuanians (the Lithuanian language and customs are seen as inseparable attributes of Lithuanianness), while the Lithuanian Poles tend not to emphasize the Polish language as an important element of their identity (even more, some of the informants said that they do not even speak Polish – they speak either Russian or Lithuanian). There is a difference between the two groups as concerns the relationship with neighbouring countries (Poland and Lithuania). The Lithuanian Poles are more accustomed to the Lithuanian citizenship when defining their identity, and Poland is perceived as a foreign state. Meanwhile, the Polish Lithuanians tend to see the Polish citizenship as a paper, with a stronger emphasis on the ethnic identity, but they also highlight the respect for the country of residence. Significant and active is the involvement of the latter with Lithuania (dual citizenship, studying in Lithuania, working activity is oriented to Lithuania).

Due to the ethnic composition of the population, one-party rule by the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania (further – LLRA) and a tense relationship with the central government, the Southeastern borderland of Lithuania is often referred to as the “Fortress” of Lithuanian Poles. However, a deeper look into the context reveals that the problem is far more complicated than the matter of ethnicity. Rather, it raises questions about people’s loyalty to the state and their identification with it. On that account, the aim of this study is to find out what actors are engaged in the struggles over power on the Southeastern borderland of Lithuania and what mechanisms are being used to hinder the state from spreading a uniform national identity on its border regions. In order to answer these questions, a field study in Salcininkai has been conducted. The analysis is based on the State-in-Society theory, presented by J. S. Migdal. The first part of the analysis is focused on the presence of other (non)political actors in the region. The conclusion made is that the political entrenchment by one party has resulted not only from the measures used by the ruling party, but was also caused by the lack of consistency and continuity in the policies towards the region by other major political players in Lithuania. Furthermore, the majority of the organisations operating in the area (state agencies, business, non-governmental organisations) are subjugated to the control of the ruling party and should not be considered as independent actors. In the second part of the analysis, the measures used by LLRA are divided into two categories: (1) administrative-material capacities; (2) symbolic resources. The first category covers such measures as threats to take away jobs, pensions, allowances as well as information control. By exploiting the frustration of the people and the exclusion of the region from the rest of the country as well as the feelings of nationality and soviet nostalgia, the party has become able to construct the narrative of “one‘s people” that allows it to take the place of the state in the minds of the people. As a result, Lithuania has become smaller than its territory. The results suggest that the State-in-Society theory, based on the practices found in the Third world countries, allows to explain processes happening on the Southeastern borderland of Lithuania and reveals a more complex picture of the situation than it is assumed nationally. An application of this theory to a case study in a country with a completely different political and historical context not only allows to look at the problems it faces in a new light, but also extends the geographical scope of the theory and allows to see new aspects of it.

Straipsnyje aptariama sociolingvistinė Lietuvos situacija remiantis 2011 m. atlikto išsamaus tyrimo „Sociolingvistinis Lietuvos ţemėlapis: miestai ir miesteliai“ rezultatais, susijusiais su Dzūkijos etnografinio regiono gyventojų nuostatomis dėl kalbų ir tarmių vartojimo kir vertybine orientacija. Šis regionas dabartiniais laikais nėra vienalytis, todėl tarmių ir kalbų vartojimo atţvilgiu dalintinas į tris dalis: 1) pietinę dzūkišką su Alytaus, Varėnos, Druskininkų ir Lazdijų miestais; 2) vidurio daugiakalbę su Lentvario, Trakų, Vievio, Nemenčinės, Pabradės, Šalčininkų, Grigiškių, Elektrėnų ir Eišiškių miestais ir 3) šiaurinę aukštaitišką su Ignalinos, Švenčionių ir Švenčionėlių miestais. Kai kurie tyrimo rezultatai šiose regiono dalyse skyrėsi. Pagrindiniai duomenų rinkimo metodai buvo du: anketavimas (64 klausimai, 4697 respondentai) ir giluminis interviu (apie 300 interviu). Iš respondentų atsakymų aiškėja, kad tarmės akivaizdţiai traukiasi tiek iš viešojo, tiek iš privataus gyvenimo visoje Lietuvoje, o Dzūkijoje – ypač: tik nedaugelis apklaustųjų pasisakė bendraujantys su savo tėvais dzūkiškai. Gerokai smukęs yra ir tarmės prestiţas. Paaiškėjo, kurias tarmes Dzūkijos etnografinio regiono gyventojai laiko įprastomis, kasdienėmis, o kurias – sunkiai suprantamomis. Tyrimo metu išsiaiškintas regiono gyventojų poţiūris į tarmės vartojimo perspektyvą – tai atskleidţia jų nuomonė dėl reikalingumo skatinti jaunimą kalbėti tarmiškai.

W artykule omówiono liczebność i rozmieszczenie skupisk mniejszości polskiej w Republice Litewskiej ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem Polaków w Solecznikach, w świetle wyników spisu powszechnego z 2011 roku. W opracowaniu ukazano również działalność głównych organizacji politycznych i społecznych oraz szkół mniejszości polskiej w rejonie solecznickim. W badaniach wykorzystano socjologiczną metodę wywiadów pogłębionych z liderami organizacji polskich. Poles are the largest national minority in Lithuania. In contemporary Šalčininkai municipality Polish national minority has a very strong position. According to 2011 data census, more than 77% of population inhabited Šalčininkai municipality that are Poles. The main aim of the paper is to show how national minority can affect on the situation in the municipality. Poles, who are very active in this region, have got many Polish organizations which support development of Polish culture and traditions. Moreover, in 2013 in the district worked 19 schools organizing education for children and youth who belong to the Polish national minority. Also Polish political party – Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania (AWPL) is very active in Šalčininkai municipality. The party permanently governs in the municipality since many years. It is worth mentioning that Poles are the most conflicted national minority in Lithuania. Many problems of Polish minority in Lithuania are exaggerated by the media or Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania and used for political propaganda, but some problems exist objectively. All generals problems affect on the situation of Poles in Šalčininkai municipality.

Straipsnyje siekiama palyginti lenkų mokyklų Ukrainoje (Horodoke, Mosciskoje) ir Lietuvoje (Šalčininkuose) mokinių kalbines nuostatas ir savimonę remiantis sociolingvistinėmis anketomis, surinktomis 2015 metais. Ištirta po keturiasdešimt 7 ir 8 klasių (14–16 metų) mokinių, besimokančių vidurinėse mokyklose lenkų kalba Šalčininkuose ir Horodoke, bei šešiasdešimt du 9–11 klasių (15–17 metų) mokinių, besimokančių Mosciskoje. Moksleiviams buvo pateiktas tas pats sociolingvistinis klausimynas lenkų kalba. Tyrime iškelta hipotezė, kad daugiakalbių bendruomenių nariai skirtingose valstybėse panašiai vertina savo lenkiškąją tapatybę ir patiria panašią rytų kalbų įtaką. Moksleiviai atsakė į klausimus apie tapatybę, šeimos tautybę, gimtąją kalbą, kalbų mokėjimą, vartojimą ir prestižą. The aim of the article is to analyze the sociolinguistic situation of pupils attending Polish schools in Mostyska, Horodok (Ukraine) and Šalčininkai (Lithuania). The comparison of sociolinguistic data of youth receiving education in the Polish language in Lithuania and Ukraine was based on questionnaire material collected by authors in May 2015. 40 questionnaires have been filled out by pupils of the 7th and 8th grades (14–15 years old) in each town, Šalčininkai and Horodok; in Mostyska, 62 pupils of the 9th–11th grades (15–17 years old) have filled out the questionnaires. The research hypothesis is the following: The sociolinguistic situation of youth attending Polish schools in different countries and participating in various language contacts is similar. The analysis includes declarations of nationality and descent, mother tongue, prestige language and situational usage as well as the knowledge of particular languages.

The article provides an analysis of the accentuation of disyllabic nouns in the Southern Aukštaitian (SAuk) dialect spoken in Southern Lithuania (Alytus, Lazdijai, Varėna, Šalčininkai, Druskininkai and Trakai districts). The term "pietų aukštaičiai" (southern Aukštaitians) was coined by scholars; because of certain phonetic peculiarities of the dialect, the inhabitants of southern Lithuania consider themselves to be dzūkai (Dzūkians). The SAuk has been of special interest to both dialectologists and Baltic language specialists for a long time. The archaic grammatical forms, syntactic constructions, phonetic, accentual and lexical peculiarities that are features of these dialects are intertwined with new phenomena and thus reveal many stages of the development of the dialect of the Southern Aukštaitians, which in turn can be of help in finding answers to some unanswered questions about the development and usage of language. For this reason more attention and research has been devoted to the SAuk dialect and its broader connections with language as a whole. The article analyses the tendencies of the accentuation parallels of disyllabic nouns with ā, ē, a and [...] stems in the SAuk dialect. Drawing on audio and written sources dating from 1952–2015, the spread of the accentuation variants of the words and their forms in the same subdialect, separate subdialects and/or their groups are discussed; the accentuation patterns of disyllabic nouns with the productive ā, ē, a and [...] stems that are stressed in various ways are described, and the nature of their prevalence in the area of the dialect is established. The study uses quantitative, geolinguistic and comparative methods. Upon completion of the research three important things were established. Firstly, the area with the largest number of variously stressed ā, ē, a and [...] disyllabic words and their forms in the same subdialect is the same, which is a comparatively small part of the southwestern area of the SAuk subdialects. Secondly, when it comes to the different frequency and intensity of the usage of the variants that are characteristic of the declension of feminine and masculine gender word stems in the same subdialect in the entire area of the SAuk dialect, parallel forms of ā and ē stem words have been observed considerably less frequently than the a and [...] stem variants. Thirdly, the number of parallel forms of the accentuation of noun stems in the same subdialect and in the speech of the informant decreases unevenly as one moves from the southwest of the country towards the north. Furthermore, the accentuation variants of feminine nouns are used in a smaller area than those of masculine nouns.

Konstantinas Kazimieras Bžostovskis, the bishop of Vilnius, funded the Trinitarians’ Church of the Holy Trinity and the Lord’s Transfiguration in Trinapolis, Vilnius, and consecrated it in 1722. Its altars and the pulpit had been erected until then. However, the consistent data on the decorations and items in the church are available only from the early 19th century. In 1832, the Church of Trinapolis was closed and its inventory was distributed until 1837. The further move of all inventory items is not known. It was established that liturgical vessels, clothes and accessories were given to the priests, who went to work in the far regions of Russia. The library went to the Trinitarian’s Monastery in Antakalnis, Vilnius. The church equipment, including furniture, sculptures, most paintings and a part of other items, was distributed to the churches of Vilnius diocese: Pabaiskas, Turgeliai, Vilnius Calvary, Karkažiškiai, Šalčininkai, Sudervė, Čiudeniškiai and Geranainys. The organs, benches and other property of the Trinitarians were lost during the fires in the Churches in Karkažiškiai and Šalčininkai. Since 1914, a bell of the same origin is no longer available in the Church in Geranainys. At the end of the 19th century, the history of the sculpture of St. John of Nepomuk and painting of St. Mary of Barūnai, which were transferred to the Church of Calvary, discontinues too. In the fourth quarter of the 19th – early 20th century, when the altars were erected in the Church in Pabaiskas and the Church in Turgeliai was reconstructed, altars and majority of paintings from the Trinitarians did not survive. However, the picture of the Holy Trinity is still in the Church in Pabaiskas, which is supposedly painted after 1812 by an unknown student of Pranciškus Smuglevičius. Four sculptures in the high altar of the Church in Turgeliai as well as two sculptures transferred to the Church Heritage Museum in Vilnius are the remains of the decorations of the old high altar of the Church of Trinapolis. The wooden baroque sculptures carved until 1720 were preliminary attributed to Friedrich Kwieczor, a craftsman in Vilnius. A pulpit of the Church of Trinapolis, made by F. Kwieczor, is preserved in the Church in Turgeliai. It is considered that the sculptures of the high altar of the parish Church of Naujieji Trakai should be assigned to him (his workshop).

Straipsnyje, taikant sociologinę kokybinių tyrimų metodologiją, analizuojama Šalčininkų ir Švenčionių rajonuose veikiančių baltarusių, lenkų ir rusų savanoriškų organizacijų veikla mobilizuojant etnines grupes, kadangi šios organizacijos pripažįstamos kaip etninių grupių šiuose rajonuose pilietinės ir politinės mobilizacijos įrankis, kanalas. Organizacijų lyderiai suvokiami kaip individualūs etninės tapatybės veikėjai, darantys įtaką etninės grupės mobilizacijai, savanoriškų organizacijų veiklai ir iš dalies etninių grupių kolektyvinio etninio ir pilietinio identiteto turiniui, santykiui su valstybe, kurioje gyvena, ir ryšiams su kilmės valstybe. Miestai, kuriuose vyko tyrimas, driekiasi Lietuvos-Baltarusijos pasienyje, tad taip pat žvelgiama, kokį poveikį siena turi etninių grupių identiteto formavimuisi ir transformacijoms., The article analyzes Byelorussian, Polish and Russian voluntary organizations in Šalčininkai and Švenčionys districts and the mobilization of ethnic groups, since these organizations are perceived as a toll or channel of civil and political mobilization of these ethnic groups. The leaders of such organizations are perceived as actors of individual ethnic identity who partly influence the mobilization of ethnic groups, the activities voluntary organizations and content of ethnic collective and civic identities and the relationship with the country of residence and with the country of origin. The cities where the research was performed is near the Lithuanian-Belarusian border. Therefore, the impact of the border on ethnic identity formation and transformation is also examined.

On the basis of the archival and historiographical materials the article concerned is looking into the agricultural reform pursued by the Soviet authorities in the 1960s-70s when individual farms and small villages were being eliminated, and the life style maintained for years was changing radically. The changes involved a dramatic migration of people from villages to new places of residence. The author of the article attempted to answer several key questions: 1) how the destruction of the system of individual farms carried out in Eastern and South-eastern Lithuania affected the demographic situation; 2) the major targets of migration from villages: more populated surrounding locations or big towns; 3) the consequences of the migration in Eastern and South-eastern Lithuania. The article is summed up with the following conclusions: The demographic situation in Eastern and South-eastern Lithuania in the period concerned remained fairly stable. Such demographic stability of the region was determined by a quite high natural population growth which compensated for migration loss. Another source supplementing the population was migration from other republics of the Soviet Union, especially from Belarus. Residents of this neighbouring republic were attracted to Eastern and South-eastern Lithuania by a better economic, social status, greater personal freedom (leaving Belarus guaranteed them a Soviet passport, which ensured better opportunities for mobility). The new arrivals would most often choose larger settlements. One could meet Russians, Byelorussians, Ukrainians, Polish and new arrivals of other nationalities in small towns and cities of Vilnius or Šalčininkai districts which were not so far from Belarus. They worked at state institutions of agricultural, industrial, educational and other areas. [...]

This paper is based on a series of qualitative (semi-structured) interviews conducted by the author with representatives of Polish civic organisations in southeastern Lithuania (the towns of Eišiškės, Jašiūnai, Pabradė, Šalčininkai, Švenčionys, Švenčionėliai, and Turgeliai). Data was collected from January 2013 to June 2014 as part of a research project to investigate ethnic, civic, regional, and local identities of ethnic minorities in southeastern Lithuania. The project was carried out by the Institute for Ethnic Studies at the Lithuanian Social Research Centre and was funded by the Research Council of Lithuania. The paper discusses the role of voluntary organisations operating in Southeastern Lithuania in mobilising the Polish community. The author investigates the activity of Polish organisations as they maintain and construct the identity (ethnic, civic, local and regional) of local community. Part of the research strategy is to recognise the content and means by which these organisations appeal to collective memory to create and affirm Polish identity. An analysis of interview data shows that the activities of organisations predominantly target the Polish community and their aims are to promote and foster Polish culture, language, and history. The Polish civic and political organisations and their leaders play active roles in identity building and mobilising the Polish Community in southeastern Lithuania. Referencing and recalling collective memories of the Polish ethnic group is an important tool for building a collective identity that lack local and regional dimensions.

Remiantis kokybinio tyrimo interviu (N = 30) bei kiekybinio tyrimo apklausų (N = 411), atliktų 2012–2014 m. Vilniaus mieste bei Vilniaus ir Šalčininkų rajonuose, duomenimis straipsnyje1 analizuojamas lenkų tautinės mažumos, gyvenančios Lietuvoje, politinis dalyvavimas šiais aspektais: domėjimasis politika; rinkimų, vykstančių Lietuvoje, preferencija pagal svarbumą; Lietuvos lenkų rinkimų akcijos atstovavimo lenkų tautinės mažumos interesams vertinimas; motyvai, skatinantys Lietuvos lenkus palaikyti ir rinkti Lietuvos lenkų rinkimų akciją; Lietuvos lenkų rinkimų akcijos ir Rusų aljanso koalicijos vertinimas; kitos „lenkiškos“ partijos poreikis. Tyrimų rezultatai rodo, kad lenkų tautinė mažuma labiausiai domisi Lietuvos valstybės politika, susijusia su jai aktualiais klausimais: seka ir vertina Lietuvos lenkų rinkimų akcijos ir Rusų aljanso koalicijos veiklą ir tai, kaip ši koalicija atstovauja Lietuvos tautinių mažumų interesams. Ji aiškiai motyvuoja ir konkrečiai paaiškina savo pasirinkimą, balsuojant už Lietuvos lenkų rinkimų akcijos ir Rusų aljanso koaliciją, turi aiškią vyraujančią nuomonę dėl to, kad kita „lenkiška“ partija nereikalinga. Remiantis šio tyrimo rezultatais galima teigti, kad Lietuvoje gyvenančių lenkų tautinė mažuma politinį dalyvavimą supranta siaurąja prasme, t. y. tik kaip domėjimąsi politika ir dalyvavimą rinkimuose. This article presents a small part of the data of the “Research of the Identity of the Polish minority in Lithuania” funded by the Lithuanian Science Council. Based on the data gathered from the qualitative research interviews (N = 30) and the quantitative research surveys (N = 411), both conducted during 2012–2013 in Vilnius, the districts of Vilnius and Šalčininkai, the article analyses the political participation and involvement into politics of the Polish minority in Lithuania. It examines these criteria: their interest in political activities and politics in general; their preferences of political elections in Lithuania rated by their importance; their evaluation of the representation of the Polish minority’s interests by the political party “Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania”; motives which promote members of the Polish minority to support and vote for the political party “Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania”; the assessment of the coalition of the political party “Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania” and the political party “Russian Alliance”; the necessity of having another “Polish” political party. The study shows that members of the Polish minority are greatly interested in politics of Lithuania when the political issues are closely related to the Polish minority: Poles tend to particularly follow the activities of the coalition of the political parties “The Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania” and “Russian Alliance” and the ways in which this coalition represents the interest of ethnic minorities in Lithuania. The respondents clearly motivate and thoroughly explain their preferences in voting for the coalition. The data also proves the predominance of an opinion that another “Polish” political party is not necessary. It may be assumed that members of the Polish minority understand political participation in a narrow sense, i. e. as being only interested in politics and participation in the elections.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjamos aktualios politinės antropologijos srities temos apie valstybės teritorialumo kitimo ir dominuojančių nacijų bei mažumų santykį. Valstybės teritorialumo kismas nuo nekvestionuojamo „galios rezervuaro“ apibrėžtoje teritorijoje iki teritorija neapibrėžiamų gimininių valstybių (angl. kin-state) atsiradimo šiuolaikiniame pasaulyje kelia klausimus, ar apie tautines mažumas iki šiol galime mąstyti tik vienos nacionalinės valstybės kontekste, ypač jeigu kalbame apie Rytų ir Vidurio Europą. Po sovietinio bloko subyrėjimo XX a. paskutiniajame dešimtmetyje Rytų ir Vidurio Europoje matome nemažai atvejų, kada valstybės apibrėžia „savo“ tautą nesivadovaudamos teritoriniu kriterijumi, t. y. valstybiniu lygmeniu palaikomi santykiai su „įsivaizduojamomis bendruomenėmis“, gyvenančiomis kaimyninėse ir kitose valstybėse. The article investigates two scenarios of nation and state territoriality. In the first case state territoriality is unquestionable and is seen as a necessary condition in defining the presence of a nation in a state. In the second case, state territoriality, or more accurately, state "delocation" corresponds better with the realities of the current world. The effects of globalization processes are felt not only in economic, cultural and other spheres, it is also reflected in different treatments of nation and state territoriality. The example of the Polish card well illustrates the relationship between a de-territorialized nation and a state. The Polish card is not a single case that shows the deterritorialization of a nation and a state. The growing number of dual citizenship cases combined with increasingly stronger political ties between related states in Eastern and Central Europe only confirms that the state and national deterritorialization is becoming more apparent. The article analyzes data collected between 2009–2013 during field research in Šalčininkai. The aims of the research were intended to reveal the characteristics of the identity construction of Poles in Lithuania. The given results show that origin plays the most important role in the construction of the Lithuanian Polish identity; people perceive ethic identity as being passed from generation to generation. Next to origin, local identity is also considered to be important. Language is not assigned a big significance. Frequently informants stressed that they more frequently spoke Russian rather than Polish – some of them did not even know Polish. Lithuanian Poles clearly separate their ethnic and national identity by saying that first they are Lithuanian citizens and ethnic identity is perceived as an intimate private space. It was observed during the field research that an important role in the construction of the Lithuanian Polish identity is played by institutionalized for It was observed during the field research that an important role in the construction of the Lithuanian Polish identity is played by institutionalized forms of nationality and ethnicity. It means that various "bjective" inscriptions about person’s nationality in his official documents (for example, inscription about nationality in soviet passports (it was used in Lithuanian passports until 2003) become an important criteria in defining ethnicity. The Polish card can be partially seen as having adopted the function of the "objective" indicator of nationality from a passport. Lithuanian Poles often understand the Polish card as proof that a person is Polish. Some people interpret the card as a substitute for a passport or an identity card in which nationality is not recorded any more. Lithuanian Poles’ interpretation of the Polish card is partially different from the official law concerning the Polish card which in one way or another ties Poles living abroad with the state of Poland. Lithuanian Poles are unwilling to see the Polish card as a bond with the state of Poland. They are equally unwilling to take advantage of pragmatic discounts and rights in Poland which are guaranteed by the possession of the Polish card. Lithuanian Poles see the Polish card as a document that strengthens their Polish identity, which shows their names and surnames in Polish characters (currently it is not allowed to write names in non-Lithuanian characters in the passports of the Lithuanian Republic), and, as it was mentioned before, it is a document that "objectively" proves their Polish origin to those who doubt it.

The article presents the names bestowed on Polish children in Lithuania after 1990, a topic which merited little scholarly attention to date. First, by way of introduction, the specific Lithuanised written forms of these names are described and compared with their standard Polish and Lithuanian equivalents. The naming trends are then analysed on the basis of three sets of data: the top ten male and female names among Lithuanian Poles (as compared with those in Lithuania and in Poland) in the years 1991, 2000, 2010 and 2013; the names of 1284 students, all born after 1990, from fifteen Polish-language schools in Lithuania; finally, the names given in the years 1991–2011 to children in the municipality of Salcininkai (Soleczniki), where the percentage of Poles is the highest in Lithuania. Interviews with members of the Polish minority in Lithuania, focusing on naming issues, have also been used for fact-finding. The research shows that the name choices of Poles in Lithuania are becoming increasingly different from those in Poland, yet not exactly convergent with Lithuanian trends. Poles almost never use names of Lithuanian origin and prefer instead simple names, not necessarily of Polish origin, that look in writing almost the same in Polish and in Lithuanian. Especially striking among these are Germanic names, such as Edward, Ernest, Eryka, Greta, never particularly popular in Poland.

Straipsnyje apžvelgiama Lietuvos lenkų autonomijos problema 1990 m. rudenį – 1991 m. vasarą. Suvažiavimo Eišiškėse metu dauguma pasisakė už "teritorinio vieneto" Lietuvos sudėtyje įkūrimą. Deklaracija skelbė "Lenkų nacionalinio teritorinio krašto su savo statusu Lietuvos sudėtyje įkūrimą". 1990 m. rudenį Vilniuje didėjo konfrontacija tarp radikalesnių AT deputatų ir Vyriausybės. Lapkričio 24 d. sušauktame suvažiavime piktintasi Eišiškių nutarimais. Priekaištavo, kad Vyriausybė suteikė per daug įgaliojimų ir laisvių savivaldai ir kad nuolaidžiauja autonomistams. Lapkričio 29 d. priimtas sprendimas dėl lietuvių kalbos vartojimo raštvedyboje, lenkai apkaltino Lietuvą antilenkiškumu. "Administracinių teritorinių vienetų tiesioginio valdymo" įstatymas priimtas gruodžio 27 d.. Po 1991 m. sausio 13-osios LKP/SSKP populiarumas tarp lenkų ėmė mažėti. Lenkų politikai padarė ne vieną pareiškimą, palaikantį Lietuvos valstybingumą. Sausio 29 d. priimtas įstatymas "Dėl LR tautinių mažumų įstatymo pakeitimo" ir nutarimas "Dėl Valstybinės komisijos Rytų Lietuvos problemoms išnagrinėti išvadų". Iki gegužės 31 d. turėjo būti parengtas Lietuvos administracinio suskirstymo projektas. Valstybinė Rytų Lietuvos komisija įpareigota parengti "Vilniaus apskrities statuso projektą". Sausio 31 d. priimtas nutarimas "Dėl vardų ir pavardžių rašymo LR pase". 1991 m. pirmoje pusėje Lenkijos diplomatams prioritetinė buvo Vokietijos kryptis, o santykiai su Lietuva išliko "neoficialūs ir nepastovūs". Jie komplikavosi, kai 1991 m. rugsėjo 4 d. Lietuvos Respublikos AT nusprendė paleisti Vilniaus ir Šalčininkų rajonų tarybas, o netrukus 6 mėnesiams buvo įvestas tiesioginis valdymas.

Nagrinėjamu laikotarpiu vykdytos administracinės teritorinės reformos Vilniaus krašto etninei padėčiai buvo palankios. Sujungiant rajonus arba keičiant kai kurių vietovių administracinį pavaldumą kiekybiškai gausiausia gyventojų grupė (lenkai) toliau koncentravosi viename teritoriniame vienete. Todėl lenkų skaičius, išskyrus Švenčionių rajoną, padidėjo. Rytų ir Pietryčių Lietuva, ypač respublikos sostinė ir didžiausias miestas Vilnius, buvo žmonių traukos centras. Vilniuje noriai kūrėsi kitų Lietuvos rajonų ir kitų sovietinių respublikų gyventojai. Tarp atvykėlių iš kitų LSSR vietų vyravo Vilniui artimų rajonų (Vilniaus, Trakų, Eišiškių (Šalčininkų) ir kt.) gyventojai, o iš kitų sovietinių respublikų išsiskyrė ir pirmavo Rusija ir Baltarusija. Tačiau, kitaip negu lietuviškų rajonų gyventojams, atvykėliams iš kitų respublikų Rytų ir Pietryčių Lietuva buvo gana patraukli. Jie stengėsi įsikurti regiono miestuose ir miesto tipo gyvenvietėse. Šiems asmenims lengviau prisitaikyti padėjo jiems etniškai ir kultūriškai artima aplinka, nes didelę regiono gyventojų dalį sudarė slavų kilmės asmenys. Intensyvi pramonės, prekybos, mokslo, kultūros ir kt. institucijų plėtra tiesiogiai veikė demografinius ir etninius Vilniaus pokyčius. 1960–1980 m. mieste padvigubėjo gyventojų (nuo apie 240 tūkst. 1960 m. iki maždaug 480 tūkst. 1979 m.). Pagrindinė to priežastis – mechaninis gyventojų prieaugis (migracija) – jis vilniečių skaičių padidino dviem trečdaliais, t. y. apie 140 tūkst. asmenų. Dėl to mieste sparčiai didėjo įvairių etninių grupių atstovų skaičius. Nagrinėjamo laikotarpio pradžioje lietuvių Vilniuje buvo apie 80 tūkst., rusų – apie 70 tūkst., lenkų – per 47 tūkst., baltarusių – apie 15 tūkst., o XX a. aštuntojo dešimtmečio pabaigoje pirmųjų buvo 225 tūkst., antrųjų – apie 106 tūkst., trečiųjų – apie 86 tūkst., ketvirtųjų – apie 31 tūkst. Migracija taip pat keitė Rytų ir Pietryčių Lietuvos etninę ir demografinę struktūrą. Dėl intensyvios regiono gyventojų migracijos į Vilnių žmonių regione mažėjo, bet šį nuostolį kompensavo gyventojai, atsikeliantys iš arti esančių lietuviškų vietovių (pvz., Širvintų rajono) ir iš kitų sovietinių respublikų, pirmiausia Baltarusijos. Dėl to regionas darėsi etniškai vis margesnis, jame ypač daugėjo baltarusių, ukrainiečių ir rusų. XX a. septintojo dešimtmečio viduryje pradėtas įgyvendinti tolygios LSSR miestų plėtros planas padėjo subalansuoti migracijos srautus respublikoje, pristabdė demografinę Vilniaus plėtrą, o kitus Rytų ir Pietryčių Lietuvos miestus (Šalčininkus, Nemenčinę, Trakus ir kt.) paskatino sparčiau augti. Based on archival and historiographical material, the author of the article examines the problem of migration in 1960–1980 in east and southeast Lithuania with the aim of answering the following questions: whether the east and southeast of the Republic of Lithuania was an attractive area for the residents of other districts of Lithuania and other Soviet republics to settle down in; what factors, causes and circumstances attracted them to the region; how migration processes affected the ethnic and demographic situation in the region; and whether the then administrative territorial reforms were favourable to the residents of this region. The following conclusions are formulated at the end of the article: 1. Administrative-territorial reforms carried out during the period in question were favourable to the ethnic situation of Vilnius region. [...] 2. East and southeast Lithuania, particularly Vilnius, the capital and the largest city of Lithuania, was the centre of attraction for people. [...] 3. Intensive development of industry, trade, science, culture, etc. directly affected the demographic and ethnic changes in Vilnius. [...] 4. Migration also changed the ethnic and demographic structure in east and southeast Lithuania. [...] 5. In the mid-1960s, implementation of the sustainable urban development plan in the Lithuanian SSR started. It helped balance migration flows in the republic, slowed demographic expansion of Vilnius, and promoted faster growth of other east and southeast cities in Lithuania.

On the Polish national and territorial autonomy in Lithuania (the Spring–Summer of 1991) Abstract A new system of Polish-Lithuanian relations was shaped manly by the passivity of Poles inhabiting the eastern Lithuania in the plebiscite organised by the Lithuanian government on 9 February 1991, and a decision of the authorities of Vilnius and Salcininkai (Polish: Soleczniki) regions to hold a referendum, initiated by Mikhail Gorbachev, on the future of the Soviet Union to turn it into a new, loose confederation of states, which was not recognized by the Lithuanian authorities. Such an attitude of Lithuanian Poles was determined by several factors. Firstly, the Soviet social and economic structure; secondly, for a large part of people the old governments of the Vilnius and Salcininkai districts and the memory of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic guaranteed stability and predictability. The soviet structures were more trusted than a newly introduced, not strong yet Lithuanian social and political order. The sense of threat was intensified by an unquestionable domination of Lithuanians on all levels of the new hierarchy. Social and political reforms were perceived by the Polish minority in Lithuania through the prism of a rule of the majority. For the rest of the Lithuanian society (except of the Russian minority) such an attitude was completely incomprehensible. In such complex geopolitical circumstances Poles from the regions of Vilnius and Salcininkai decided to convene a congress of deputies of the Vilnius and Salcininkai regions to Mostiskės. According to a project adopted at the Congress, the Vilnius district was to become „an autonomous administrative-territorial unit within the Lithuanian Republic”, with a broad political autonomy. In the opinion of Lithuanians, however, the region of Vilnius should not be “an autonomous administrative-territorial unit of the Lithuanian State”, but form a part of Lithuanian federation. This meant that the Poles wanted to enlarge the status of the Vilnius region and to strengthen its autonomy within Lithuania. The implementation of such a project would mean a decentralisation of the state. In a complex geopolitical situation of that time all attempts at the decentralisation of the country was regarded by the Lithuanian political elite as the threat of the security of the young Lithuanian state, its sovereignty and territorial integrity. О польской национально-территориальной автономии в Литве (весна-лето 1991 г.) Пассивность поляков, живших в Восточной Литве, в плебисците, организованном литовскими властями 9 февраля 1991 и решение властей Виленского и Солечницкого районов организовать референдум о преобразовании Советского Союза в новую, более свободную конфедерацию, объявленный Горбачевым и признанный литовскими властями нелегальным, формировали новую систему польско-литовских отношений. Причины такой позиции литовских поляков были предопределены несколькими обстоятельствами. Во-первых, старой, советской общественно-экономической структурой. Во-вторых, прежними властями Виленского и Солечницкого районов, а также памятью o Литовской ССР, которые для значительной части жителей гарантировали стабильность и предсказуемость. Советские структуры вызывали больше доверия, чем новый, еще не укрепленный, литовский общественный и политический строй. Дополнительно, чувство опасности среди жителей усиливалось из-за подавляющего преобладания литовцев на всех уровнях новой власти. Общественно-политические реформы оценивались представителями польского меньшинства сквозь призму господства большинства. Для остальной части литовского общества (за исключением русского меньшинства) такой подход был совсем непонятен. В настолько сложном геополитическом положении поляки из Виленского и Солечницкого районов решились на созыв съезда депутатов в Мостишках. Согласно, принятому на съезде проекту статус Виленского края был определен как „автономная административно-территориальная единица в составе Литовской Республики ”. Для нее предусматривалась широкая политическая автономия. В свою очередь, согласно литовцам, Виленский край не должен быть автономной административно-территориальной единицей литовского государства, а „государственной единицей” соединенной федеративными узами с Литвой. Это означает, что целью поляков являлось расширение статуса Виленского края и укрепление его автономии по отношению к центральным властям. Осуществление такого проекта означало децентрализацию Литвы. В сложных геополитических условиях этого периода литовские политические элиты истолковывали попытки децентрализации страны как угрозу безопасности молодого литовского государства, его суверенитета и территориальной целостности.

Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania in elections in Lithuania. How Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania managed to surpass the 5 percent electoral treshold? Political activity of Poles in Lithuania started around the same time as Lithuanian. The Union of Poles in Lithuania was established at the congress on 15‑16 April, 1989, which transformed the Socio‑Cultural Association of Poles in Lithuania, founded a year earlier – in 1988. In the first parliamentary elections in independent Lithuania, Polish minority was not very active. Looking at the public space, the internal situation in the political elite of the Polish minority in Lithuania and the development of Polish‑Lithuanian relationship as well as election results of AWPL in Lithuania have a noticeable direct relationship. The development of Polish‑Lithuanian relations after the collapse of the Soviet Union can be divided into three stages: 1st from 1990 to 1994, 2nd from 1995 to 2005 period, 3rd from about 2007 to the present time. AWPL is a regional party and its political influence is limited over the whole country. Meanwhile, the party has regionally dominant positions in two municipalities (the Vilnius region and Šalčininkai), and even in the two municipalities (Vilnius city, Trakai) is a influential party. Cooperation of AWPL with Russian parties in Lithuania started already during 1995 elections. Without support of Russian voters and other marginal parties, AWPL would probably not have been able to overcome 5 percent barier for parties in proportional system.

Projekto vykdytojų sprendimas apklausos duomenis susieti su etnografiniais regionais labai pasiteisino Žemaitijos atveju, o štai dėl Dzūkijos radosi keblumų. Atsakymai į svarbiausią klausimą – ar esama dabartinius gyventojus siejančių socialinių ryšių plačiai išsidriekusiame Dzūkijos etnografiniame regione – parodė, kad šiandien šio regiono gyventojai nėra susaistyti bendrų socialinių tinklų. Etnografiniai požymiai yra išsirutulioję ne tuo pačiu laikotarpiu kaip lingvistiniai, nulėmę tarmių pasiskirstymą ir vartojimą šiame regione, todėl šiandien Dzūkijos regionas suskyla mažiausiai į tris dalis (prie panašių išvadų prieina ir kiti tyrėjai, plg. Ragauskaitė, Daugirdas 2011). Socialinių tinklų teorijos taikymas sociolingvistikoje duoda gražių vaisių, todėl ir šiame tyrime pasitvirtino prielaida, kad jei žmonių nesieja socialiniai ryšiai, tai ir jų kalba neturi bendro pagrindo: nesant glaudaus bendravimo, nelieka priežasčių vartoti tokią pačią kalbos atmainą (Labov 2001; Trudgill 1986: 8–9), o tada prarandamas ir tos pačios etninės savimonės pamatas (Labrie 1988; Giddens 2000: 10), tuomet kalba / tarmė tiesiog negali būti panaši, mažai skirtis (Auer 2005; Milroy 1980: 35–36). Būtų sunku patikėti, kad šiandien, tarkim, Varėną su Ignalina sieja glaudūs tarpusavio ryšiai arba kad Dzūkijos centras yra Vilniuje, todėl į klausimą apie Dzūkijos etnografinio regiono gyventojų tapatinimąsi su dzūkais ir jų tarme vienareikšmiško atsakymo negauta. Dzūkijos etnografinis regionas tarmių vartojimo požiūriu šiandien susideda iš trijų dalių: 1) dzūkiškos su Alytaus, Varėnos, Druskininkų ir Lazdijų miestais; 2) daugiakalbės su Lentvario, Trakų, Vievio, Nemenčinės, Pabradės, Šalčininkų, Grigiškių, Elektrėnų ir Eišiškių miestais ir 3) aukštaitiškos su Ignalinos, Švenčionių ir Švenčionėlių miestais. Tokios išvados prieita gavus atsakymus į projekte keltus klausimus, ką Dzūkijos miestų ir miestelių (ne kaimo) gyventojai mano apie savo pačių kalbą. Stengiantis nustatyti, kurią iš tarmių apklausiamieji laiko gražiausia, įprasčiausia, prestižiškiausia, Dzūkijos regione gauta itin skirtingų atsakymų, nes vieniems viena tarmė buvo įprastesnė, kitiems – kita. Sugrupavus atsakymus susidarė trys klasteriai – dzūkiškas, daugiakalbis ir aukštaitiškas. Analysis of survey data on the use of dialects has shown that in this respect three significantly different parts can be distinguished in Dzūkija: 1) the Dzūkian area including the towns of Alytus, Varėna, Druskininkai, and Lazdijai; 2) a multilingual area including Lentvaris, Trakai, Vievis, Nemenčinė, Pabradė, Šalčininkai, Grigiškės, Elektrėnai and Eišiškės; and 3) the Aukštaitian area including Ignalina, Švenčionys, and Švenčionėliai. In the region of Dzūkija as a whole, dialects are little-used when communicating with parents (cf. 8% in Dzūkija with the country average of 20.78%). However, the Dzūkian area, with its 19.43% of respondents who admit using dialects, is very similar to the national average. Residents in the multilingual area of the region use dialects very rarely: only 4.27% speak their native dialect when communicating with parents. Unexpectedly, in terms of dialect use this part of Dzūkija appears to be similar to the Aukštaitian area rather than to the Dzūkian. Such tendency could possibly be accounted for by the fact that the majority of surveyed respondents have parents who lived in the soviet times when the use of dialects was discouraged and more prominence was given to the standard language which was generally associated with higher education. The data on the choice of the most common dialect is particularly informative as it indicates which dialect is commonly used in the area, even if the respondents themselves do not use it. Respondents from the Dzūkian area mostly choose Dzūkian as the most common dialect (75.49%); in the Aukštaitian area, the Aukštaitian dialect is considered to be most common (81.94%); finally, in the multilingual area, one fourth of the respondents (24.59%) did not know which dialect to indicate as most probably none of them is commonly used. The significant difference between the large number of respondents who could single out a common dialect and those few who admitted that they used their dialect with parents can be explained in the following manner: as a common dialect, the respondents usually indicated the dialect that they hear around them, irrespectively of the fact how frequently or rarely it may happen, so this question merely provides qualitative data. In contrast, the question about communication with parents provides quantitative results because all answers pertain to individual respondents. Over a half of respondents (61.02%) consider Dzūkian, their local dialect, to be most beautiful, and the same can be said about the Aukštaitian area where 61.72% of the respondents rated Aukštaitian highest. One fourth (25.4%) of the respondents have no opinion as to the most beautiful dialect. As regards language prestige, in the Dzūkian area the local dialect is regarded as most prestigious by 38.89% of the respondents. Aukštaitian as the most prestigious variety was indicated by 59.07% of respondents in the Aukštaitian area. Thus, Aukštaitian is rated higher in its area than Dzūkian. The fact that nearly half of respondents (52.90%) in the multilingual area do not distinguish one prestige-laden dialect could be explained by the infrequent use of dialects in this area. Moreover, some of respondents could have misunderstood the meaning of the word ‘prestigious’. To the majority of residents in Dzūkija, the least comprehensible dialect is Žemaitian: it was indicated by 87.93% of respondents in the Dzūkian area, 79.26% in the Aukštaitian area, and 60.12% in the multilingual one. Obviously, Žemaitian is not only most difficult to understand, but also it is seldom heard in this part of Lithuania. The future of dialects in this region does not look very optimistic because the respondents do not think it is necessary to encourage young people to use dialects. It was only in the Dzūkian area that three respondents out of five (61.2%) agreed that young people should be encouraged to use their native dialect. To compare, in the Aukštaitian and multilingual areas only one third of respondents share the same opinion (respectively 38.95% and 33.33%).

Revolutionary events of 1988-1991 in Soviet Union affeted the life of Vilnius region: they demonstrated national differences, mentalities, national problems that were silenced before. But even a quarter of century passsed many of these problems are still around. We still hear angry voices claiming that Lithuania neglects education of minorities, though it provides more financial alocations to it than any other state in the world. These myths are still widespread in In Vilnius and Šalčininkai regions providing fuel to misunderstanding between Lithuania and its neighbors.

Lenkų dominuojamuose Vilniaus ir Šalčininkų rajonuose rinkimus į Lietuvos Aukščiausiąją Tarybą (AT) 1990 m. laimėjo Lietuvos lenkų sąjungos (LLS) kandidatai ir vadinamieji Lietuvos komunistų partijos/ Sovietų Sąjungos komunistų partijos (LKP/ SSKP) platformininkai arba jiems prijaučiantys. Atrodo, Sąjūdis iš anksto buvo susitaikęs su tokiais rezultatais. Sunku pasakyti, ar toks sprendimas buvo bendresnės Sąjūdžio strategijos Rytų Lietuvos atžvilgiu dalis, bet svarbu tai, kad atsisakyta idėjos tartis su LLS, palaikyti nuosaikesnius lenkų kandidatus, didinant jų galimybes nurungti LKP veikėjus. LLS irgi neieškojo nei glaudesnių ryšių, nei bendradarbiavimo su Sąjūdžiu. Nors amžininkų prisiminimai rodo, kad tam tikrų kontaktų vis dėlto būta, deja, jie liko epizodiški ir ne itin nusisekę. Po rinkimų į AT atsirado dvi lenkų deputatų grupės: viena palaikė Lietuvos valstybės atkūrimo idėją, kita jai nepritarė. Tačiau AT deputatai sąjūdininkai, atrodo, nelabai jaudinosi, kokia bus lenkų laikysena valstybės atkūrimo atžvilgiu. Šiame straipsnyje istoriko žvilgsniu detaliai rekonstruojami į 1990 m. kovo 11 d. Lietuvos apsisprendimą dėl valstybingumo atkūrimo atvedę įvykiai, dėmesį sutelkiant į Lietuvos lenkų tautinės mažumos veiksnį šiame kelyje, lenkų atstovų vaidmenį tuometinėje politikos arenoje, jų santykį ir sąveiką su Sąjūdžio jėgomis, ryšius su Varšuva ir Maskva, Lenkijos reakciją į Lietuvos politinį žingsnį, taip pat aptariant tuo metu šalyje pavojingai išaugusią įtampą, kuri galėjo privesti prie LKP/ SSKP platformininkams naudingo tarpetninio konflikto. In 1990 election to the Supreme Council of Lithuania (SC) held in Vilnius and Šalčininkai regions dominated by Polish people was won by the candidates of Association of Poles in Lithuania (APL) and the so-called platformers of the Lithuanian Communist Party / Communist Party of the Soviet Union (LCP / CPSU) and those sympathetic to them. It seems that Sąjūdis (eng. Movement) had resigned to such results. It is hard to say whether such decision was part of a more general strategy of the Sąjūdis in the Eastern Lithuania point of view, but the important fact is that the they had refused the idea to negotiate with the APL and to support more moderate Polish candidates increasing their ability to defeat LCP figures. The APL also did not seek for closer ties or cooperation with the Sąjūdis. Although memories of contemporaries indicate that some contacts were occurring, unfortunately, they had remained episodic and not very successful. After the election, there were two groups of Polish deputies in the SC: one was supporting the idea of restoration of Lithuanian country, the other was not supporting it. However, it seems that deputies and members of Sąjūdis in SC was not worrying about the attitude of the Poles towards the restoration of the country. This article minutely reconstructs events, which on the 11th of March, 1990, had led to the Lithuanian decision to restore Lithuanian statehood, focusing on the factor of the Polish national minority living in Lithuania, the role of the Polish representatives in the contemporary political arena, their relationship and interaction with the forces of Sąjūdis, relations with Warsaw and Moscow, and the reaction of Poland to the political step of Lithuania, also discussing a dangerously increasing contemporary tension that could have led to the inter-ethnic conflict useful to the LCP / CPSU platformers.

Lietuvoje formuojant valstybinių parkų tinklą buvo numatytas ir specializuotu saugomų teritorijų, steigiamų istoriniu pagrindu, tinklo sukūrimas, tačiau šis tikslas iš esmės nebuvo pasiektas. Kadangi Lietuvos teritorijoje yra galimybių formuoti istorinių regioninių parkų tinklą, būtina tai konkrečiau išnagrinėti ir apibendrinti. Straipsnyje analizuojama istorinių saugomų teritorijų steigimo ir valdymo patirtis labiausiai šiuo požiūriu pažengusiose JAV bei Kanadoje, pristatoma tokių teritorijų sklaida pasaulyje. Taip pat pateikiama istorinio regioninio parko sampratos koncepcija, aptariamos galimybės steigti istorinius regioninius parkus Lietuvoje. Numatant galimų steigti istorinių regioninių parkų tinklą, nustatoma tinkamiausia erdvinė struktūra atsižvelgiant į nekilnojamojo kultūros paveldo objektų ir kompleksų sklaidos tendencijas, esamą rekreacinį ir turistinį potencialą, susisiekimo infrastruktūrą. Atsižvelgiant į Lietuvos kultūrinio istorinio karkaso ypatumus rekomenduojami nauji istoriniai regioniniai parkai šešiose perspektyviose teritorijose Radviliškio (Daugyvenės IRP), Skuodo (Apuolės IRP), Kretingos (Impilties IRP), Klaipėdos-Šilutės (Švėkšnos- Veiviržėnų IRP), Pakruojo (Linkuvos-Žeimelio IRP) bei Vilniaus-Šalčininkų (Medininkų IRP) rajonų savivaldybėse. Taip pat aptariamos pagrindinės organizacinės problemos, kurios šiuo metu iškyla Lietuvoje norint steigti naują saugomą teritoriją. Together with forming network of national and regional parks creation protected areas based on historical basis was provided. However this aim hasn't been reached. In principal Lithuania has great potential for historic regional parks development, so it is necessary to explore the options in this planning area. Historic protected areas establishment and management experience in mostly advanced on this field USA and Canada was specially analyzed and dispersion of mentioned areas in the world was also examined. Equally the conception of historic regional parks with models of their possible fashion on space structure is presented and options for establishment of some new historic regional parks are discussed. An appropriate territorial structure is determined taking into account the cultural heritage and the spread tendencies of these complexes, existing recreational and tourism potential, transport infrastructure before possible historic regional parks network was presented. The possible areas are suggested in choosing six perspective territories in Radviliškis (Daugyvenė HRP), Skuodas (Apuolė HRP), Kretinga (Impiltis HRP), Klaipėda-Silutė (Švėkšna-Veiviržėnai HRP), Pakruojis (Linkuva-Žeimelis HRP) bei Vilnius-Šalčininkai (Medininkai HRP) municipalities in accordance with values features of Lithuanian cultural historic framework. Finally the main problems are discussed, encountered in order to establish a new protected area in Lithuania.

Rytų Lietuvos regionas dėl savo problemiškumo susilaukia vis daugiau tyrėjų dėmesio. Vilniaus miestas su aplinkiniu regionu istoriškai susietas stipriais ekonominiais, socialiniais ir kultūriniais ryšiais, bet Vilniaus įtakos regionui samprata ir ribos nėra aiškios. Dar sunkiau nustatyti, kokiu atstumu Vilniaus miestas turi įtakos žemėnaudos ypatumams. Straipsnyje pateikti tyrimo, kurio tikslas – išsiaiškinti, kiek ir kaip Vilnius veikia Rytų Lietuvos žemės naudojimą, duomenys. Analizuota Rytų Lietuvos žemės ūkio naudmenų struktūra ir jos kaita, nagrinėta apleistų žemės ūkio naudmenų problema, atkreipiant dėmes ir į žemės reformos bei žemės grąžinimo savininkams klausimams. Eastern region of Lithuania is one of the most problematic ones in the country. This region has specific demographic situation, with almost all the territory being sparsely populated. The region is one of the territories that are less favourable for agricultural activities. Moreover the situation regarding ethnic minorities in this region is more complicated than elsewhere in Lithuania. An important factor is that Eastern Lithuania is on the edge of the EU, which complicates the development of this region even more. The said factors result in distinctive land use characterised by small plots of land, which are generally non-marketable. The region has lots of abandoned agricultural land. Moreover, much of the land is cultivated only to receive the EU assistance. This region is under the influence of Vilnius city region, which is the biggest and most significant in Lithuania. Being a state capital and a large economic centre Vilnius city influences the entire country, but the influence is most felt in Eastern Lithuania comprising Vilnius, Utena and Alytus counties. Logically, land use in areas closer to cities should be more intensive than in the peripheral ones. A similar effect was observed in the past, but after the restoration of independence in 1990 the situation has changed and the intensity of use of land closer to Vilnius became lower than in remote agrarian territories. The territories of analyzed counties do not differ by agricultural land structure and the influence of Vilnius city is felt only in the closest surroundings of the city. The land use structure and its dynamics depend on natural and economic conditions that influence land suitability for agricultural activity. The regions that provide better conditions for developing agriculture have more agricultural land. In farms operating in Vilnius district agricultural land comprises 85%. In territories less favourable for agricultural activity the agricultural land area is even smaller, for example in Varėna district such land constitutes only 64%, in Zarasai district – 75%. Meanwhile in Ukmerg district, where land is better, the percentage of agricultural land is even 91%. The analysis of changes in agricultural land in 2003 and 2010 shows that intensity of land cultivation increased. Areas of arable land enlarged the most. However, rather big regional differences can be seen. In Vilnius district arable land decreased by more than 2 thousand ha. This could be explained by the fact that Vilnius district has more registered farm holders who do not intend to engage in agricultural activity and by buying land only expect to easier get permits for construction or other activities unrelated to agriculture than other districts have. Influence of Vilnius city is felt only in a small area around the city and is concentrated in the Vilnius district. In other districts the areas of arable land significantly increased: by 11 thousand ha in Šalčininkai district, by 20 thousand ha in Ukmerg district, and by 19 thousand ha in Anykščiai district. Sudėtyje yra trys auksinės 1587 m. monetos iš Olandijos ir 1596 bei 1597 m. dukatai iš Utrechto, taip pat Lietuvos teritorijoje rečiau aptinkami 1582 m. Ernesto iš Mansfeldo (1567–1578/1609) ir Ferdinando iš Elzaso (1564–1595) (be pažymėtos datos) taleriai bei Rudolfo II iš Kampeno (1576–1612) (be pažymėtos datos) pusės talerio bei mažesnių nominalų monetos – 3 kreiceriai, viena dvidešimt ketvirtoji talerio ir 2 pfenigai. Lobis buvo rastas 1977 m., numizmatiniu požiūriu yra vertingas. Dalis jo – 46 monetos – 1980 m. pateko į Lietuvos nacionalinį muziejų, kur lobis ir buvo įvardytas kaip Okolicos lobis. Publikacija siekiama pateikti Lietuvos banko Pinigų muziejuje saugomo lobio monetų iliustracijas ir duomenis apie jas bei patikslinti lobio pavadinimą ir sudėties autentiškumą. Pirmą kartą Okolicos lobį iš Akmenynės apylinkės Šalčininkų rajone paskelbė Eugenijus Ivanauskas. Okolicos kaimas buvo Šalčininkų rajone, Akmenynės apylinkėje, tačiau naujuose žemėlapiuose ir vietovardžių žodynuose šio vietovardžio jau nebėra. Naujas jo pavadinimas siejamas su Sangėliškių kaimu, esančiu prie buvusios Okolicos, Akmenynės apylinkėje, Šalčininkų rajone. Į Pinigų muziejų patekusios ir Lietuvos nacionaliniame muziejuje saugomos lobio dalies sudėtis labai skiriasi. Pinigų muziejų patekusiame komplekse visos monetos yra Vakarų Europos, tuo tarpu Lietuvos nacionaliniame muziejuje saugomos LDK, Lenkijos ir tik kelios Vakarų Europos monetos. The Sangėliškės (Okolica) coin hoard is presented in this publication. The hoard consists of 48 coins of various Western European cities from the second half of the XVI century to 1615. It consists of 3 gold 1587 coins from Holland, 1596 and 1597 ducats from Utrecht, also in Lithuanian territory rarely found 1582 thaler of Ernst of Mansfeld (1567-1578/1609) and a thaler (not dated) of Ferdinand of Alsace (1564-1595), half thaler (not dated) of Rudolf II of Kampen (1576-1612) as well as smaller denomination coins - 3 kreutzers, 1/24 thaler and 2 pfennigs. The hoard was discovered in 1977 and has a numismatic value. A part of it - 46 coins - entered the National museum of Lithuania in 1980, where the hoard was referred to as the Okolica hoard. This publication aims to present the illustrations and data of the coin hoard kept at the Money museum of the Bank of Lithuania, to clarify the hoard title and the authenticity of its contents. The Okolica hoard was published for the first time in the district of Akmenynė, in Šalčininkai county by Eugenijus Ivanauskas. The Okolica village was situated in the county of Šalčininkai, Akmenynė district, however, new maps and place-name dictionaries do not contain this name any more. Its new name is related with the Sangėliškės village, situated near the former Okolica, Akmenynė district, Šalčininkai county. The parts of the hoard at the Money museum and the National museum of Lithuania are very different. All coins from the complex at the Money museum are from western Europe, whereas the National museum of Lithuania keeps the coins from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Poland and only a few western European coins.

Straipsnyje siekiama aptarti XX a. Lietuvos kaimo pokyčius, žvelgiant įjuos etnografiniu, arba socialiniu ir kultūriniu, požiūriu ir bandant apčiuopti esminius jų momentus. Tai retrospektyvinis ir istoriografinis darbas, pagrįstas Lietuvos etnografų ir etnologų tyrimais, 1991-2009 m. autorės lauko tyrimų patirtimi ir antropologinėmis teorinėmis prieigomis. Straipsnyje teigiama, kad posovietiniai pokyčiai Lietuvos kaime atskleidžia gerokai sudėtingesnius nei dekolektyvizacija ar nuosavybės santykių atkūrimas, įvairiasluoksnius XX a. valstiečio ūkio transformacijų klodus. [...] Aim of this study is to discuss ethnographically the changes of Lithuanian village over the 20th century, and to elucidate the main moments that are significant in social and cultural sense. This is a retrospective and a historiographic view, which is based on Lithuanian ethnologists' and ethnographers' studies, and on the author's field experience in rural areas of Lithuania throughout the period of 1991-2009. The study emphasizes that the post-soviet transformations of Lithuanian village show the processes, which are much more complex than the reestablishment of property rights, and de-collectivization. Instead it suggests emphasizing a multifaceted view, and paying attention to the controversies of cultural and social alterations that a village and a household in Lithuania experienced over the whole period ofthe 20th century. The pretext for this discussion is a story of a farmer Henrik from a village in Šalčininkai district. His story tells us about the ways of how people in Lithuania experienced post-soviet transformations, and what things appeared to be significant for them. Henrik, whom the author of the study met during field research in 1998, was living in the farmstead where he was born. Before World War II, his grandfather had 50 ha of land, and shared it among his three sons and a daughter equally 'that no harm would come'. Henrik's father was killed during World War II in Russia; nobody knows his grave. After World War II one of Henrik's uncles who lived nearby left for Poland. Henrik has two brothers and a sister. When they were small children grandparents helped their family a lot. Now his brothers and sisters live in the villages not far from him. They married earlier, and left the farmstead. Henrik, who is the youngest brother, stayed, and inherited the house, and actually the farm. He told that 'when such times came' their family decided to take the land back. He arranged all the documents needed for reestablishment of property rights, and is going to apply. However, he is already working on his own land. According to him, it is much better than to work at the kolhoz where he was an agricultural equipment operator for thirty five years. He told 'when those changes happened it was strange that you do not need to go to job. It is difficult to break a habit. You get up early in the morning, and you do not need to go anywhere. You are just on your own.' Those were the words that he used to characterize the challenge of being on his own. If to look more detailed it becomes evident that it is not the changing ofdaily routine or habits that he intended to emphasize, but the changes of agrarian order, and oftotality ofsocial worlds. Traditional Lithuanian peasant household at the beginning of the 20th century was a social unit where agricultural production was based on family with its social solidarity of living together, and working the land together, sharing the social spaces, labour, and responsibilities. It was a self-sufficient household living on its own. The land there was an axis of life that centres the worldview, rituals and worships, cultural lifestyles, and symbolic representations, routine ofdaily life and celebrities, and connects the tradition of ancestors and of living people into one unbreakable chain (Baudouin de Courtenay-Ehrenkreutzowa 1930/1998). After the reconstruction of statehood of Lithuania in 1918, and during the Interwar period of 1920's-1930's the individual strategies of households started to change actively under the land reform of 1922, and new agricultural politics established on the national level. Straipsnyje, taikant antropologinę tyrimo metodologiją, gvildenamos Lietuvos lenkų, gyvenančių Šalčininkuose, identiteto konstravimo problemos. Šiame krašte gyvenančių Lietuvos lenkų identiteto konstravimas yra aktualizuojamas per etninio ir nacionalinio identiteto priešpriešinimą, pasitelkiant ribinių zonų (paribio) teorinę perspektyvą. Pagal šią teorinę perspektyvą etninis ir pilietinis identitetai yra matomi kaip istoriškai paveikti priklausymo kelioms valstybėms. Lietuvos lenkų apibūdinamas santykis su Lietuvos valstybe tiesiogiai priklauso nuo informantų amžiaus. Vyresniosios kartos atstovai kvestionuoja priklausymą Lietuvos valstybei ir priklausymą lenkų nacijai grindžia savo gyvenimu ribinėse zonose. Jaunesniosios kartos atstovai savo santykį su Lietuva aptaria remdamasi pilietybės kriterijumi. Tačiau ne mažiau svarbus yra etniškai apibrėžiamas priklausymas lenkų nacijai, kuris nekonfliktiškai priešinamas buvimui Lietuvos piliečiais. Viena vertus, Lietuvos lenkai linkę save identifikuoti su gyvenamąja valstybe, t. y. Lietuva, pilietybės pagrindu, tačiau istorinė tėvynė - Lenkija išlieka svarbiu identiteto veiksniu. Kalba nėra laikoma esminiu Lietuvos lenkų identiteto elementu. Lietuvos lenkų identitetą per įrašo pase įvaizdį veikia ankstesnių valstybių (Sovietų Sąjungos) institucionalizuota nacijos samprata, taip pat ir pastarųjų laikų transnacionalinės valstybių strategijos (pvz., straipsnyje pateiktas Lenko kortos pavyzdys) Using the anthropological research methods, the article analyses the problems of identity construction of Lithuanian Poles living in Šalčininkai. The identity construction of Lithuanian Poles living in this region is actualized by opposition of ethnic and national identity, using the theoretical perspective of marginal (boundary) zones. According to this theoretical perspective, ethnic and civil identities are seen as historically affected by belonging to several states. The described relation of Lithuanian Poles with the state of Lithuania is directly dependent on the age of informants. The representatives of the elder generation question the belonging to the state of Lithuania and substantiate their belonging to the Polish nation by their residence in marginal zones. The representatives of the younger generation discuss their relation with the state of Lithuania based on the criterion of citizenship. However, ethnically defined belonging to the Polish nation is not less important and is in non-conflict opposition with being the citizens of Lithuania. On one hand, Lithuanian Poles tend to identify themselves with their state of residence, i.e., Lithuania, based on citizenship; on the other hand, the historical motherland – Poland – remains an important factor of identity. The language is not considered to be an essential element of the identity of Lithuanian Poles. By the passport entry the identity of Lithuanian Poles is affected by the institutionalized conception of a nation of former states (Soviet Union) as well as the recent transnational strategies (e.g., the example of the Polish Card presented in the article).

Pastaruoju metu didėjant aplinkos taršai, visame pasaulyje labai domimasi ekologine žemdirbyste ir išaugintais ekologiškais maisto produktais, kurie yra natūralūs ir sveikesni, nei įprastiniu būdu užauginti, nekenkia aplinkai. Ekologinis žemės ūkis tiek ES tiek ir Lietuvoje užima ypatingą vietą, kuris pagrįstas moderniomis aplinkai palankiomis technologijomis, siekiant žmones aprūpinti saugiais ir aukštos kokybės maisto produktais. Ekologiškų produktų gamyba Lietuvoje pradėta 1993 m. kai buvo sertifikuoti devyni ūkiai, kuriems buvo suteiktas pereinamojo laikotarpio į ekologinį ūkį statusas. Lietuvai įstojus į Europos Sąjungą bei gerokai padidėjus mokamoms kompensacinėms išmokoms paspartėjo ir ekologinio ūkininkavimo plėtra. Ekologinės gamybos ūkių skaičius Lietuvoje didėjo iki 2007 m. kaip buvo sertifikuoti 2855 ekologinės gamybos ūkiai. Po to pastebima ekologinės gamybos ūkių skaičiaus mažėjimo tendencija. 2010 m. sertifikuota 2668 ūkis, palyginti su 2007 m. ūkių skaičius sumažėjo 187 vnt. arba 7,01 proc. Visai kitos tendencijos vyko vertinant sertifikuoto ploto pokyčius. 2004 m. palyginti su 2003 m. plotas padidėjo 19666 ha arba 84,4 proc. Ekologinės gamybos ūkių plotas, skirtingai nuo ūkių skaičiaus ir toliau didėjo. 2010 m. iš viso buvo sertifikuota 149096 ha arba 21734 ha daugiau nei 2008 m. bei 14141 ha daugiau nei 2009 m. Tam įtakos turėjo pasikeitusi kompensacinių išmokų už ekologinį ūkininkavimą mokėjimo tvarka ir išmokų dydžio sumažėjimas. Ekologinių ūkių pasiskirstymas pagal jų dydį ir naudojamos žemės plotą rajonuose yra skirtingas. 2010 m. didžiausias ūkių skaičius kaip ir 2007 m. buvo Biržų, Raseinių bei Šalčininkų rajonuose.Vienuose Lietuvos rajonuose ekologinės gamybos ūkių mažėjo, kituose didėjo. Ekologinė gamyba Lietuvoje turi dideles perspektyvas. Mokamos kompensacinės išmokos, jų dydis ir mokėjimo tvarka turėjo ir turi esminės įtakos ekologinės gamybos plėtrai Lietuvoje. Pasikeitus kompensacinių išmokų mokėjimo tvarkai 2007-2013 m. laikotarpiu iš ekologinės gamybos pradėjo trauktis smulkūs ekologinės gamybos ūkiai, o į iš intensyvios į ekologinę gamybą pradėjo pereiti stambūs chemizuoti ūkiai. Keičiant kompensacinių išmokų dydį bei mokėjimo tvarką galima įtakoti ekologinio ūkininkavimo plėtrą Lietuvoje. Lietuvos ekologinės gamybos ūkių pasėlių struktūroje 2005-2010 m. esminių pokyčių neįvyko. 2010 m. kaip ir 2005 m. daugiausiai auginami varpiniai javai (45,2 ir 45,72 proc.), daugiametės žolės (26,9 ir 20,98 proc.), ankštiniai javai (7,6 ir 12,64 proc.) bei ankštinių ir varpinių javų mišiniai (7,7 ir 6,19 proc.). Lietuvos ekologinės gamybos ūkiuose esama pasėlių struktūrą nevišiškai atitinka ekologinio ūkininkavimo principus, nes pasėlių struktūroje dominuojant varpiniams javams bus sunku išsaugoti ir palaikyti dirvožemio derlingumą, o tai yra vienas iš pagrindinių reikalavimų, keliamų ekologiniam ūkininkavimui. Lietuvos ekologinės gamybos sistemoje vyrauja augalininkystės kryptis, daugiausiai auginama varpinių javų, o ekologinė gyvulininkystė išvystyta silpnai. Norint Lietuvoje skatinti ekologinės gyvulininkystės plėtrą būtina peržiūrėti kompensacinių išmokų mokėjimo tvarką, skiriant didesnį dėmesį ekologinės gyvulininkystės vystymui, o tai ženkliai paspartintų ekologinės gyvulininkystės plėtrą Lietuvoje, ypatingai mažiau palankiose ūkininkauti vietovėse, kur šiuo metu nemažai ūkininkų užsiima ekologiniu ūkininkavimu. Ši Lietuvos teritorija labai palanki ekologinės gyvulininkystės vystymui. Lietuvoje ekologinės bitininkystės ūkių 2005-2010 m. sumažėjo nuo 49 iki 26 vnt., o sertifikuotų bičių šeimų nuo 1597 iki 910 vnt. [...] There is a worldwide growing interest in organic farming and organic food produced products. They are natural and healthier than those grown in intensive production farms, applying synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Organic farming in the EU and Lithuania has a special place, which is based on modern environment friendly technologies in order to provide people with safe and high quality food products. Organic production in Lithuania started in 1993 when it was certified nine farms that have been granted a conversional period to organic farming status. The article presents the summarized data on organic farms number, land area, average farm size, summarizes the data of organic farms distribution in different regions of Lithuania, analysis of compensatory payments for organic production and to discuss arrangements for payment of compensatory payments, changes in crop structure analysis of organic livestock, beekeeping and fishery development in Lithuania as well as future prospects. After Lithuania's accession to the European Union and significantly increasing compensation payments accelerated development of organic farming. Number of organic farms increased in Lithuania until 2007, then 2855 organic farms has been certified. Then noticed a downward trend in the organic farms number. This was influenced by the change in compensation payments for organic farming, the payment order and the payments decrease. Area of organic land has continued to increase, unlike the number of farms. Organic farming in Lithuania looks very promising. Compensatory payments and their size had a significant impact on organic farming development in Lithuania. The mostly grown crops were cereals and legumes for grain, as well as legumes and cereal mixtures; perennial grasses. This shows that Lithuania's organic farm is not developing organic livestock farming, practiced mostly in organic cereals production. [...]

1796 m. pabaigoje po imperatorės Jekaterinos II mirties ėmė sparčiai keistis Rusijos imperijos vidaus politika. Į sostą įžengęs Pavlas I neseniai prisijungtų buvusios Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės žemių atžvilgiu buvo palankesnis ir suteikė kraštui daugiau savarankiškumo, paleido daugumą įkalintų sukilėlių. Jis pakvietė Gardine namų arešte kalintą, sosto atsisakiusį paskutinį Abiejų Tautų karalių Stanislovą Augustą Poniatovskį atvykti į Sankt Peterburgą. Valdovas sutiko. Stanislovas Augustas Poniatovskis keliavo per Lydą, Šalčininkus, Vilnių, Žiežmarius, Kauną, Šiaulius, Mintaują (dabar Jelgavą), Narvą. Vilniuje jis buvo sutiktas iškilmingai, jį sveikino vietinė administracija, akademinė bendruomenė, dvasininkija, miestiečiai. Šio vizito metu atsiskleidė Rusijos imperijos administracijos ir vietinių gyventojų santykių problematika. The last king of the Republic of two nations, Stanislaw August Poniatowski, having given up the throne, was kept as an honorary prisoner in Grodno, in the palace of Governor-general Nikolaj Repnin. The monarch could entertain guests, travel freely in the surrounding territories; however, he was under surveillance; his own and his courtiers’ correspondence was checked. Catherine II, Russian Empress, promised to grant him permission to go abroad, but this issue was postponed. Only after the Empress’ death Pavel I, who ascended the Russian throne in 1796, changed the state’s policy towards the occupied territories of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and invited Stanislaw Augustus to St. Petersburg. The king accepted this invitation, and the journey from Grodno to the capital of the Russian Empire was organized by the officials of the Russian administration. Travel expenses were mainly covered by the Russian Treasury, but the King had the right to choose travel route and schedule. The king and his escort traveled through Lyda, Šalčininkai, Vilnius, Žiežmariai, Kaunas, Šiauliai, Mintauja (now Jelgava), Narva. The most important stop took place in Vilnius, where the ruler was met enthusiastically and solemnly. There he spent six days: February 19–24, 1797. He was greeted by the representatives of the administration of the Russian Empire, members of Vilnius academic community, clergy, and ordinary citizens. Stanislaw August got acquainted with Vilnius and its surroundings, went to Verkiai and was impressed by what he saw. This trip also revealed some characteristic features of the policy of Pavlas I towards the occupied territories of both countries. Though the authorities of the Russian Empire were ready to make some concession to the local community on some minor and touchy issues, the main question, i. e. restoration of the country’s independence, was not raised. Thus it becomes evident that the authorities did not fully trust the king and had fears about possible patriotic actions during the monarch’s visit

Remiantis archyvine medžiaga, statistikos leidiniais ir istoriografija straipsnyje analizuojama pirmojo sovietmečio Lietuvos gyventojų surašymo organizavimas (1959 m.), jo įgyvendinimo aplinkybės ir rezultatai Rytų bei Pietryčių Lietuvoje. Pasirengimas gyventojų surašymui pradėtas dar 1957 m., kai buvo priimti tam tikri nutarimai aukščiausioje SSRS vadovybėje. Pasirengimą surašymui, kurį koordinavo Centrinė statistikos valdyba Maskvoje, galima suskirstyti į etapus: organizacinių struktūrų kūrimas; būtinos dokumentacijos parengimas; kadrų vietose paieška ir jų apmokymas. Dėl Rytų bei Pietryčių Lietuvos geografinių savitumų gyventojų tautinė sudėtis ir jų surašymas pasižymėjo tam tikrais ypatumais. Tačiau gyventojų surašymo organizavimas turėjo vykti sklandžiai. Gauta informacija atskleidė, kad Rytų ir Pietryčių Lietuva skyrėsi nuo kitų šalies regionų etniniais ir socialiniais aspektais. Straipsnio pabaigoje pateikiamos kelios išvados. 1959 m. gyventojų surašymas buvo pirmasis sovietinis surašymas Lietuvoje. Jis vyko politinės liberalizacijos metais, kuri turėjo neabejotinos reikšmės rezultatams. SSSR vadovybė buvo suinteresuota objektyvia demografine statistika. Surašymo metu gyventojai patys teikė informaciją apie save, iš jų nebuvo reikalaujama raštiškų įrodymų (dokumentų). Todėl jie galėjo laisvai nurodyti teisingus duomenis, kuriuos galbūt iki tol dėl įvairių priežasčių turėjo slėpti. Palyginus oficialiai paskelbtus duomenis su pirmine surašymo medžiaga, pastebėtini nedideli neatitikimai, tačiau jie galutiniams rezultatams esminės įtakos neturėjo. Gyventojų surašymo rezultatai vertintini kaip objektyvūs. Surašymo rezultatai patvirtino Rytų ir Pietryčių Lietuvos etninį, socialinį, kultūrinį išskirtinumą, kurį nulėmė istorinės ir politinės priežastys. Regionas buvo daugiatautis, jame ženklų gyventojų skaičių sudarė lenkai. Kai kuriuose rajonuose (pvz., Naujosios Vilnios ar Šalčininkų) jie sudarė absoliučią rajono gyventojų daugumą. Galima teigti, kad kai kurie rodikliai (pvz., išsilavinimo lygis) Rytų ir Pietryčių Lietuvoje buvo prastesni, negu rodė gyventojų surašymas, nes apibendrintuose jo rezultatuose nebuvo fiksuojamas vyresnių nei 50 m. amžiaus žmonių išsilavinimo lygis. Būtent tarp jų buvo nemažai beraščių ir mažaraščių. Surašymas parodė, kad lenkų išsilavinimo lygis buvo žemesnis negu kitų etninių grupių. Tarp jaunų lenkų pasitaikė beraščių asmenų, ko tarp kitų etninių grupių praktiškai nebuvo. Tokia padėtis daugiausia susidarė dėl pokario migracinių procesų ir ekonominių socialinių veiksnių. Surašymo medžiaga patvirtino, kad Rytų ir Pietryčių Lietuvoje rusifikacijos procesas buvo labiau pažengęs didesniuose miesteliuose ir miestuose, kuriuose telkėsi dauguma valstybinių įstaigų. Kaip rusifikaciją stiprinusį veiksnį galima išskirti mišrių šeimų gausą regione. The article, which is based on the materials from Lithuanian archives, statistical publications and historiographical studies, analyses the organization of the first Soviet population census in Lithuania (1959), the circumstances of its realisation and its outcome in East and Southeast Lithuania. Preparation for the census started in 1957 following the adoption of a corresponding decision by the highest authorities of the USSR. Arrangements for the population census, which were coordinated by the Central Bureau of Statistics in Moscow, can be divided into the following stages: development of organizational structures; preparation of necessary documentation; recruitment and training of local staff. Due to the geographic peculiarities of East and Southeast Lithuania ethnic composition of the region, etc. population census in the area manifested specific features. Still they did not impede with the smooth organization of the census. The collected information revealed that East and Southeast Lithuania was different from other regions of the country in ethnic and social respects. The following conclusions are presented at the end of the article: The population census of 1959 was the first Soviet census in Lithuania. It was organized in the period of political liberalization which reflected on the results. The authorities of the USSR were interested in impartial demographic statistics. In the course of the population census people would present requested information themselves and were not asked for written evidence (documents). Thus they had the opportunity to provide correct data which they might have had reasons to conceal before. Comparison of official data with the primary material of the census revealed minor discrepancies; however, they had little impact of the final results. The information received in the course of the census was considered objective. The results of the census confirmed ethnic and socio-cultural peculiarity of East and Southeast Lithuania which was predetermined by historic-political reasons. Multinationalism was characteristic of the region as the majority of its population was of Polish descent. In certain districts (e.g. Naujoji Vilnia or Šalčininkai) the Poles constituted the overall majority of the population. It can be stated that certain indicators in East and Southeast Lithuania in fact were inferior to those suggested by the census as its broad-brush results did not reflect the standard of education of people aged 50 and above. There were quite a few illiterate and uneducated people among them. The census revealed that the standard of education of the Poles was lower compared to other ethnic minorities. There were cases of illiteracy among young people of Polish descent which was unrepresentative of other ethnic groups. This situation was predetermined by post-war migratory processes and economic-social factors. The census revealed that the process of russification in East and Southeast Lithuania was more advanced in urban areas as the majority of state institutions were in operation there. The abundance of mixed families in the region can be considered a factor that intensified the process of russification.
