Ayrıca başarı/statü, arkadaşlık ve eğlence alt boyutlarında branşlar arasında anlamlı farklılıklar gözlenmiştir., This study aims to find out whether there is a difference, based on gender and the types of sports, between sports participation motivation and the motivation scores of the students attending secondary schools in the central districts of Ankara and playing in school teams. 378 students ( X age 15.83 ± 0.93), consisting of 278 males ( X age 15.85±0.92) and 100 females ( X age 15.77±0.95), from 52 different secondary schools (n9.class: 139, n10.class: 118, n11.class: 90, n12.class: 31) voluntarily participated in the study. The study used The Sports Participation Motivation Questionnaire (1983), which developed by Gill, Gross and Huddleston and adapted to Turkish by Oyar et all (2001). The questionnaire, consisting of 30 items and 8 subscales including the reasons why individuals participate in sports, was used as the data collection tool. t test was used to analyze the gender difference in sports participation motivation and One-Way Variance Analysis (Anova) was used to determine the difference between the types of sports. Consequently, it was found out that among the girls the most important reason for the participation in sports was team spirit and the least important reason was friendship and among the boys the most important reason was skill improvement while the least important reason was friendship. The analysis to test the gender differences in sports participation among secondary school athletes, indicated a significant difference between girls and boys in favour of the former group for the subscale fun. In addition, it was found out there were significant differences between the types of sports in the subscales success/status, friendship and fun

The present study was conducted to determine the slaughter and carcass traits of male lambs of the Akkaraman (A), Morkaraman (M), Awassi (IW), Karayaka (KR), Kıvırcık (KV) and Middle Anatolian Merino (MAM) sheep breeds. Fattening of all lambs started when they were at 90 days at weaning and finished when they reached bodyweight of 40 kg. The cold dressing percentage of lambs of A, M, and IW breeds were significantly lower than those of KV, KR and MAM. Fat depth and muscle area were significantly greater in KV and MAM lambs than those of the other breeds. There were significant differences among breeds in shoulder, leg and lean weights. Weights of back loin in KV and MAM lambs were significantly greater than those of the other breeds. The highest values for carcass fleshiness were obtained in MAM and IW lambs, but they had a significantly lower carcass fatness score. There were significant differences among the breeds in carcass compactness and leg conformation. The results of the present study indicated that A and MAM breeds could be recommended for desirable carcass characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: While surgical treatment is the most accepted treatment method for displaced supracondylar humerus fractures in children, there is little data about immobilization method after surgery. The aim of the study is to determine whether there is any difference inpreventing loss of reduction between long-arm cast and long-arm splint following pediatric supracondylar humerus fracture surgery.Patients and Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of pediatric patients with supracondylar humerus fractures treatedoperatively between 2012 and 2019 at a university hospital. According to Skaggs criteria, early postoperative and 3rd-week follow-upX-rays were evaluated for the loss of reduction (LOR). Postoperative immobilization method; splint or cast was compared in thecontext of LOR.Results: Cast immobilization was found to be superior in preventing LOR in the first three weeks postoperatively (p˂0.05). There wasno significant difference for other factors like fracture configuration, patient age and surgical technique. Conclusion: Cast immobilization is superior to splint immobilization in preventing radiologic LOR after pediatric supracondylarhumerus fracture surgery however, clinical relevance of this conclusion is yet to be proved. Keywords: Supracondylar humerus fracture, Postoperative immobilization, Loss of reduction

Sonuç: Yüke maruz kalan bölgede zarar görmeyen plakların aynı dayanıklılıkta yüke maruz kalmayan bölgede de kullanılıyor olması bu bölgeler için dayanıklılık özelliklerini kaybetmeden daha az metalik içerikli, ince profilli ve daha ucuza mal edilebilir plaklar üretilmesi yönünde çalışmalar yapılabilir Objectives: Dynamic compression plates used in fracture fixation were divided into 2 groups according to the location of use: upper extremity (Group 1) and lower extremity (Group 2). The metallic structure and properties of the plates were evaluated using radiographic, penetrant, and chemical analysis. Methods: There was no statistically significant difference between the 2 groups in terms of patient sex, mean age, side distribution, or removal time (p>0.05). Results: No instance of microfracture was observed in the radiological and penetrant analysis of the plates. There was no metal loss or metal ratio change observed in the chemical analysis. There appears to be no additional benefit of durability based on the metal compound and no damage was observed during an appropriate period of use. Conclusion: The successful use of plates in weight-bearing areas as well as non-weight-bearing areas with no damage may lead to further research and the production of lower cost alternatives that are equally durable.

- Abstract

The effect of the media on decisions taken in healthcare is very strong. To the best of our knowledge, there has been no previous report in literature of how orthopaedic oncology is reflected in the media. In this context, the aim of this study was to present the representation of orthopaedic oncology in the media according to 2019 data. According to the statements of patients presenting at the orthopaedic oncology polyclinic, key words were defined as, bone cyst, bone cancer, bone metastasis, orthopaedic oncology, soft tissue sarcoma, bone cancer treatment, bone cancer symptoms, benign bone tumour, soft tissue cancer. News items presented in the media according to these key words were reviewed with the optical character recognition (OCR) methodology (Ajans Press Group®, Istanbul, Turkey). Screening was applied to almost 4000 newspapers and journals as printed press and more than 10,000 internet sites as the online environment. From the key words screened in the context of this study, there were seen to be a total of 473 news items in newspapers and journals in Turkey in 2019. The news items covered an area of 56310 column centimetres (colcm), and these news items were determined to have reached 44,377,922 people. The advertising equivalent value of the news items was calculated as 2,606,721 TL. The most frequently seen key words in the news items were bone cancer, soft tissue cancer, bone metastasis. These data are shown in detail in the tables. The results of this study, which examined the representation of orthopaedic oncology in the media over a one-year period, showed that half of the news items were in local press, and national representation was low. The field of orthopaedic oncology is poorly represented in the media, and this must be increased for patients to be able to access correct and reliable information.

Amaç: Tümör tipi endoprotez sonrası derin enfeksiyonların tedavisinde genellikle iki aşamalı revizyon cerrahisi uygulanır. Çalışmamızın amacı enfekte tümör protezi ilk aşaması sonrası oluşan anatomik boşluğun antibiyotikli megaspacer’larla rekonstrüksiyonunun fonksiyonel sonuçlarını incelemektir. Yöntem: 2005-2017 yılları arasında geniş cerrahi rezeksiyon sonrası tümör tipi endoprotez uygulanıp derin enfeksiyon nedeniyle protezi çıkarılan 20 hasta çalışmaya alındı. Ortalama takip süresi 28 ay (5- 96 aralığında) idi. 11 erkek 9 kadından oluşan grubun ortalama yaşı 33.1 yıldı (8-64 aralığında). Hastaların tümüne 2 aşamalı cerrahi uygulandı. 12 hastanın ilk ameliyatında çimentolu, 8 hastada ise çimentosuz endoprotez yapıldı. Çalışmaya yüzeyel enfeksiyon nedeniyle yara debritmanı yapılan hastalar dahil edilmedi. Hastaların onkolojik ve poliklinik takiplerinden biyokimyasal ve mikrobiyolojik kayıtlarına ulaşılarak lökosit, sedimentasyon, CRP, enfeksiyöz ajan türleri değerlendirildi. Hastaların 2 ‘si Ewing sarkomu, 8’i osteosarkom, 6’sı kondrosarkom, 2’si lenfoma, 1’i yüksek dereceli pleomorfik sarkom, 1’i dev hücreli tümör tanılı idi. Electrical thermal injuries usually result from industrial accidents and have a mortality rate of 3-5%. They might cause functional impairment, loss of extremity and even death. Psychologic impacts can be observed also. A 34 year-old male patient admitted to our institute with an amputated upper extremity on one side and a nonfuctional hand on the contralateral side one year after an electrical injury. He had total sensorial loss on his hand. A two staged operation was planned in order to gain grip function. The frst stage was composed of release of contractures of 1st web space and MP joints of 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th fngers and restoration of opposition of thumb with opponensplasty. The second stage was composed of restoration of fexion of fngers with tendon grafts and restoration of pinch with adductorplasty. At the end, the patient had a partially functioning hand; at least he was able to hold a pen between his thumb and index fnger. Restoration of function and especially tendon transfer in a nonsensory extremity has only very limited indications. However psychological conditions sometimes should be taken into consideration and attempt could be made to gain a basic function

Objectives: We evaluated the mid-term follow-up results of patients who were treated by minimal epicondylectomy and decompression for cubital tunnel syndrome. Methods: The study included 17 elbows of 15 patients (9 females, 6 males; mean age 45 years; range 35 to 63 years) who underwent minimal medial epicondylectomy and in situ decompression for cubital tunnel syndrome, which was diagnosed through history, physical examination, and electrodiagnostic tests. Before surgery, all the patients received various conservative treatments for at least six months, with no beneficial effect. Thirteen patients had unilateral, two patients had bilateral involvement, with 11 elbows on the dominant side. The mean duration of symptoms was 14 months (range 8 to 36 months). Preoperative grading of nerve compression according to the McGowan system was as follows: three patients (20%) grade I, 11 patients (73.3%) grade II, and one patient (6.7%) grade III. The results of surgical treatment was evaluated according to the Wilson-Krout criteria. The mean follow-up was 32 months (range 25 to 64 months). Results: Symptomatic improvement was achieved in all the patients. The results were excellent in 11 elbows (64.7%), good in five elbows (29.4%), and fair in one elbow (5.9%). None of the patients developed ulnar nerve palsy or subluxation, medial elbow instability, or weakness of the flexor-pronator origin. Pain and tenderness detected at the osteotomy site in four elbows disappeared after a mean of three months. Conclusion: Minimal medial epicondylectomy and decompression was found to be a safe and effective method with a low complication rate in the treatment of cubital tunnel syndrome. - Abstract
The present study was conducted on specific skeletal muscles of six weaned male kids from each of the Angora, Hair, Honamlı, and Kilis goat breeds. The relationships between the expression of myogenic factor 5 (Myf5) and myogenic factor 6 (Myf6) genes and muscle fibre characteristics were analysed. Muscle samples from the longissimus dorsi (LD) and semitendinosus (ST) were collected from six 90-day-old weaned male kids of each breed. Muscle fiber characteristics were assessed through histochemical staining, while expression levels of Myf5 and Myf6 genes were quantified using real-time PCR. Total RNA content in the LD and ST muscles was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in Honamlı kids compared to those of the other breeds. Similarly, the expression of Myf5 gene in Honamlı kids was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that observed in kids from the other breeds in LD muscle. Conversely, in the ST muscle, Hair kids exhibited a significantly lower expression of Myf5 (p < 0.05) when compared to both Honamlı and Kilis kids Additionally, Kilis kids demonstrated a significant reduced expression of Myf6 gene (p < 0.05) relative to the other breeds. The highest expression levels of the Myf6 gene (p < 0.05) were detected in the ST muscle of Honamlı and Angora kids, significantly surpassing those observed in Hair and Kilis kids. Moreover, significant correlations (p < 0.05) were observed among Myf5 and Myf6 gene expression levels and various muscle fiber characteristics differing across breeds. The results of this study underscore the pivotal role of these myogenic regulatory factors in muscle development, offering insights into the molecular mechanism driving breed-specific muscle growth. This association between gene expression and muscle phenotype could have profound implications for targeted breeding programs aimed at optimizing muscle traits in livestock species., Competing Interests: Declarations. - Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between the MRF gene family members and slaughter characteristics in Saanen kids with varying slaughter weights. Twenty male kids of the Turkish Saanen breed were individually fattened for 60 days after weaning under an intensive management system. The kids were divided into two groups: low slaughter weight (L; n = 11; ≤29 kg) and high slaughter weight (H; n = 13; >29) at the end of the fattening. After slaughter, muscle samples from Longissimus-dorsi (LD) and Semitendinosus (ST) muscles were obtained. Carcass characteristics were higher in H than in L kids ( p < 0.05). Myogenic Factor 5 gene expression level in the LD muscle of H kids was higher ( p < 0.05) than that of L kids. A similar trend was observed regarding Myogenic Factor 6 and Myoblast Determination Factor gene expression levels in the LD muscle ( p < 0.05). Also, the Myogenin gene expression level of H kids was higher than that of L kids in both muscles ( p < 0.05). There were positive correlations among the slaughter weight, carcass characteristics, and some MRF gene expression levels in both muscles ( p < 0.05) that the higher gene expression increases the weight and affects the carcass characteristics. The study results suggest that the difference in slaughter weight at the end of fattening in Saanen kids may be due to the expression level of myogenic regulatory factor (MRF) genes. Fattening performance and MRF genes may have a positive correlation.

- Abstract
In this study tissue equivalency of the polymeric materials was investigated by comparing with ICRP 110 Male Adult Computational Phantom tissues. For this purpose, radiological properties of polyamide (PA), high density polyethylene (HDPE), ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyoxymethylene (POM) and polyurethane foam (PU FOAM) were evaluated in the diagnostic energy range (15-150 keV). The radiological properties of the materials and ICRP 110 Male and Female Adult Computational Phantom tissues were calculated with Phy-X/PSD software. No major differences were seen except for sex-specific organs, and comparisons were made using an adult male phantom. To confirm the results experimentally, a chest phantom was designed with the polymeric materials. The phantom was scanned by Siemens SOMATOM Edge CT device with tube voltage of 120 kVp and Hounsfield Unit (HU) values were measured. In addition, HU values were calculated using theoretical relationships and significant agreement was obtained between measured and calculated HUs. It was determined that PA, PP, UHMWPE and HDPE were equivalent to muscle and adipose tissue, PVC and PTFE were equivalent to mineral bone, PET and POM were equivalent to spongiosa bone and PU FOAM was equivalent to lung tissue., (© 2024 IOP Publishing Ltd.)

- Abstract
Background: Vascularized fibula grafts (VFGs) have become one of the most preferred grafts for the reconstruction of bone defects. However, despite the many advantages over other graft options, recipient and donor site morbidities are also common. Donor site morbidity has been reported at rates ranging from 5% to 67%. The aim of this study was to present a single-center series examining the clinical, functional, and radiologic aspects of donor site morbidity following VFG harvesting., Methods: The study included 69 patients who underwent biological reconstruction with VFG for bone tumors, avascular necrosis of the femoral head, or bone defects after trauma. Patients were evaluated functionally, clinically, and radiologically for donor site morbidity., Results: Donor site morbidity was observed in 33 of 69 patients (48%). The most complications were sensation deficits around the feet and ankles (20 of 69; 29%). Knee laxity was more common in patients who underwent osteoarticular fibular resection ( P = .006)., Conclusion: We found VFG to be an effective method for the reconstruction of large bone defects, but associated with a relatively high rate of complications. Complications requiring surgical intervention were rare and the majority of patients did not have long-term functional limitations., Level of Evidence: Level IV, retrospective case series., Competing Interests: Declaration of Conflicting InterestsThe author(s) declared no potential conflicts of interest with respect to the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article. - Abstract
This investigation aimed to assess the influence of birth weight on post-weaning fattening performance, meat quality, muscle fibre characteristics, and carcass traits in Karayaka lambs. The study categorized the lambs into three distinct groups based on birth weight: low birth weight (LBW), medium birth weight (MBW), and high birth weight (HBW). Throughout the fattening phase, the lambs were given ad libitum access to food and water, culminating in the slaughter at the end of the study. Following slaughter, warm and cold carcasses were weighted, and specific muscles (longissimus thoracis et lumborum [LTL], semitendinosus [ST], and semimembranosus [SM]) were isolated for the evaluation of muscle weights, muscle fibre types (Type I, Type IIA, and Type IIB), and muscle fibre numbers. Carcass characteristics were also determined, including eye muscle (LTL) fat, loin thickness, and meat quality characteristics, such as pH, colour, texture, cooking loss, and water-holding capacity. The statistical analysis revealed highly significant differences among the experimental groups concerning muscle weights and warm and cold carcass weights ( p < 0.01), with the lambs in the HBW group exhibiting a notably higher carcass yield (in females: 45.65 ± 1.34% and in males: 46.18 ± 0.77%) and LTL, ST, and SM (except for female lambs) muscle weights than the lambs in LBW group ( p < 0.01). However, apart from the texture of LTL and ST muscles, no significant differences in meat quality parameters were observed among the treatment groups ( p > 0.05). Notably, the birth weight of lambs did not impart a discernible effect on the total number and metabolic activity of muscle fibres in LTL, ST, and SM muscles. Nonetheless, a noteworthy distinction in the fibre area of Type I fibres in the LTL muscle of male lambs (LBW: 30.4 ± 8.9, MBW: 29.1 ± 7.3 and HBW; 77.3 ± 15.4) and in the ST muscle of female lambs (LBW: 44.1 ± 8.1, MBW: 38.8 ± 7.7 and HBW: 36.9 ± 7.1) were evident among the birth weight groups ( p < 0.05). The study also found that the mean fat thickness values of eye muscles in Karayaka lambs, as obtained by ultrasonic tests, were below the typical range for sheep. In synthesis, the outcomes of this study underscore the considerable impact of birth weight on slaughtered and carcass weights, emphasizing the positive association between higher birth weights and enhanced carcass yield. Remarkably, despite these pronounced effects on carcass traits, the birth weight did not demonstrate a statistically significant influence on meat quality or overall muscle fibre characteristics, except for the area of Type I fibres in the LTL muscle. This nuanced understanding contributes valuable insights into the intricate relationship between birth weight and various physiological and carcass parameters in Karayaka lambs undergoing post-weaning fattening.

- Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the pre-mating weight and placental characteristics on birth weight. Data were collected from 62 Karayaka ewes and 70 Karayaka lambs. The placental characteristics considered were placental weight, placental area and the number of cotyledons. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used for statistical comparison and the determination of relationships between variables. In addition, correlation coefficients between live weights and placental characteristics were determined. The average birth weight (BW), pre-mating weight (PMW), placental weight (PW), placental area (PA) and cotyledon number (CN) values were 4.37 ± 0.70 kg, 50.22 ± 5.63 kg, 362.51 ± 118.42 g, 994.18 ± 312.76 cm 2 and 56.93 ± 8.06, respectively. BW had positive correlations with PMW (0.147), birth type (BT) (0.643), PW (0.604), PA (0.323) and CN (0.161) ( P < 0.05). BW had negative correlations with maternal age (MA) ( - 0.119 ) ( P < 0.05). PMW had positive correlations with maternal age (MA) (0.237) ( P < 0.05). - Abstract
Background: While periprosthetic joint infection has always been a significant concern for orthopaedic surgeons, the rate of infection is five to ten times higher after tumor prosthesis implantation. With the growing use of mega-implants, the number of these infections has also increased. We aimed to investigate the results of our patients with a primary malignant musculoskeletal tumor, who underwent two-stage revision surgery for an infected mega-prosthesis. We also presented the emerging complicatons and required soft tissue reconstruction procedures., Methods: The study included 32 primary bone and soft tissue sarcoma patients who underwent a two-stage revision procedure for infection. After a rigorous bone and soft tissue debridement procedure at the first stage, antibiotic-loaded bone cement was wrapped around a cloverleaf type intramedullary nail and inserted into the forming gap. After a minimum of 6 weeks of antibiotic therapy, depending on patients' clinical signs and serum infection markers, the reimplantation stage was undertaken., Results: The mean oncologic follow-up period was 28 months (range 5-96 months). During this period, 11 patients died because of non-infection related causes, 12 patients were alive with their disease, whereas 9 patients were totally free of their oncologic condition. The infection was eradicated in all survivors except one patient, where a high-level transfemoral amputation became necessary., Conclusion: Periprosthetic infection after tumor proshesis implantation in cancer patients can be managed with same principles as conventional arthroplaty procedures, taking care that they are immunocompromised and vulnerable patients and their bone stock loss is significant which makes surgical options more challenging., Competing Interests: Conflict of interestThe authors declare no conflicts of interest with respect to the authorship and/or publication of this article. - Abstract
In vitro maturation (IVM) of mammalian oocytes, which influences subsequent in vitro development of embryos, is affected by the macromolecule content in culture media for the success of oocyte maturation competence, in which the cytoplasmic and nuclear reprogramming events occur. The insulin-like growth factor family (IGFs) promotes the maturation of bovine oocytes and the expansion of cumulus cells and also inhibits apoptosis. This study was, therefore, designed to examine the effects of macromolecules (bovine serum albumin, BSA; fetal calf serum, FCS; and polyvinyl alcohol, PVA) on in vitro nuclear maturation, total cellular protein, glutathione peroxidase (GPx) enzyme activity, and the gene expression level of IGF1, IGF2, and their receptor in bovine oocytes. Oocytes obtained from bovine ovaries were cultured in bicarbonate-buffered medium 199 supplemented with 4 mg/mL BSA, 10% FCS, 1 mg/mL PVA, and without macromolecule supplement (control) during 22 h in the air with a humidified atmosphere and 5% CO2 at 38.5 °C temperature. Supplementation of BSA and FCS increased (χ2 = 9.84; p < 0.05) the percentages of oocytes that reached metaphase II compared to the control and PVA. The amount of protein per ml of cell extracts of oocytes matured in FCS supplemented culture media was higher (p < 0.05) than the oocytes in the PVA and control. The levels of GPx enzyme activity in cell extracts isolated from oocytes in each experimental group did not change over time, but the GPx enzyme activity in oocytes matured in PVA-supplemented culture media was lower (p < 0.05) than in oocytes in the other experimental groups. Transcript for the IGF1 gene was not detected in all experimental groups, but the supplementation of BSA and FCS significantly elevated the transcript level of the IGF2 gene. In addition, the maturation of oocytes with BSA-supplemented media increased the transcript level of the IGF1R gene, whereas the transcript level of the IGF2R gene was similar among macromolecule supplementation groups. The current study concluded that BSA and FCS could improve in vitro bovine oocyte development due to supporting nuclear maturation and increasing the total cellular protein content, GPx enzyme, and transcript activity.

- Abstract
There is little knowledge about the carcass potential of Turkish native goat breeds raised under different rearing conditions. It is necessary to compare the carcass characteristics of these breeds to minimize the effect of the rearing conditions. Therefore, this study aims to compare the growth, slaughter, and carcass characteristics of male kids at weaning age to eliminate the impact of rearing conditions. Kids born to Angora ( n = 6), Hair ( n = 6), Honamlı ( n = 6), and Kilis ( n = 6) Turkish native goat breeds, ranging in age from 2-3 years, were slaughtered at 90 days of weaning age and carcass characteristics were determined immediately. There were differences ( p < 0.05) among breeds in terms of birth weight (BW) and daily weight gain (DWG) from birth to weaning age. Honamlı kids had higher BW and DWG than those of other breeds ( p < 0.05). Similarly, carcass weights (hot-cold) and yields (hot-cold) of Honamlı kids were higher compared to kids born to other breeds ( p < 0.05). Additionally, Honamlı and Hair kids had higher longissimus-dorsi (LD), and semitendinosus (ST) muscle weights compared to Kilis and Angora kids. Interestingly, Kilis kids had lower BW and DWG than those of other breeds ( p < 0.05). There were significant differences ( p < 0.05) among breeds in terms of non-carcass parts and organ weights. Positive correlations were calculated between cross-sectional area and weight (r = 0.793; p < 0.01), length and weight (r = 0.723; p < 0.01), and depth and weight (r = 0.698; p < 0.01) in LD muscle of all kids. A similar correlation trend was calculated for the ST muscle (cross-sectional area and weight; r = 0.699; p < 0.01, length and weight; r = 0.751; p < 0.01, and depth and weight; r = 0.528; p < 0.05) in all kids. In conclusion, the present study results showed that Honamlı kids could be used for fattening material due to their good carcass quality compared to other native breeds.

- Abstract
The aim of this study was to classify placental characteristics of Akkaraman, Morkaraman, Karayaka, Awassi, Malya, and Bafra sheep breeds using the hierarchical clustering method. In total, 240 individual data records were used as experimental material. Placental characteristics such as total cotyledon surface area, small and large cotyledon length, small cotyledon depth, etc. were used as explanatory variables to classify the breeds' characteristics. Hierarchical clustering was used with the nearest neighbour method with Euclidean distance in order to classify the sheep breeds' variations. As a result, six breeds were separated into three clusters: the first cluster consisted of Bafra, Karayaka, and Awassi breeds; the second consisted of Akkaraman and Malya breeds; and the third cluster included only the Morkaraman breed. Bafra and Karayaka were pointed as the nearest breeds, with a similarity of 98.7% in terms of placental characteristics. The similarity rate of the Akkaraman and Malya breeds was at a level of 97.5%, whereas it was 96.8% for Bafra, Karayaka, and Awassi breeds. The similarity of Akkaraman, Karayaka, Awassi, Malya, and Bafra sheep breeds was estimated as 95.7%. The overall similarity was found to be at a level of 93.2% among sheep breeds. The outcomes of the study might be useful as a selection tool for reproductivity and can be used to select the breed to be reared.

- Abstract
Background: Intramedullary nailing is the most preferred fixation method for diaphyseal radius and ulna fractures in the young age group. The aim of this study was to compare the dorsal and lateral entry points in the context of entry site-related complications, fracture union and functional results., Methods: This retrospective comparative study included pediatric patients who underwent surgery for isolated diaphyseal radius or both bone forearm fractures with intramedullary nailing using Kirschner wire between January 2013 and January 2019. K-wire was introduced from the distal radius through dorsal entry ( Group A) in 19 patients and lateral entry (Group B) in 18 patients. The mean follow-up was 37 months. Complications were noted and functional outcomes were evaluated according to the CHOP criteria., Results: All fractures were healed. The functional results were determined to be excellent for 30, fair for 4, and poor for 3 patients. The overall complication rate was 18.9%, including distal radius fracture, mild pain in the wrist, and minor loss in ROM. No statistically significant differences were determined between the groups in respect of functional results and complication rates., Conclusion: Good functional results and similar complication rates can be obtained with both dorsal and lateral entry approaches. Stainless steel K-wire is an inexpensive intramedullary fixation implant option, which provides strong stabilization. Distal radius fracture is a newly reported complication for forearm intramedullary nailing. Leaving the implant out of the skin seems safe with the benefit of avoiding a further surgical intervention to extract the implant., Competing Interests: Conflict of interestOn behalf of all authors, the corresponding author states that there is no conflict of interest., (© Indian Orthopaedics Association 2021.)

- Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to investigate amputation-related factors after limb-salvage surgery (LSS) in patients with extremity-located bone and soft-tissue sarcomas and determine the relationship between these factors and patient survival., Methods: In this retrospective study at our institution, patients in whom LSS was first performed because of an extremity-located musculoskeletal sarcoma, and subsequently amputation was carried out for various indications were included. Patient and tumor characteristics, details of surgical procedures, indications of amputation, number of operations, presence of metastasis before amputation, and post-amputation patient survival rates were analyzed., Results: A total of 25 patients (10 men, 15 women; mean age=41.96±21.88 years), in whom amputation was performed after LSS as initial resection of an extremity sarcoma or re-resection(s) of a local recurrence, were included in the study. The leading oncological indication for amputation was local recurrence that occurred in 18 (72%) patients. Non-oncological indications included prosthetic infection in 5 (20%), mechanical failure in 1 (4%), and skin necrosis in 1 (4%) patient. The patients underwent a median of 2 (range, 1-4) limb-salvage procedures before amputation. Distant organ metastasis was detected in 22 (88%) patients during follow-up; in 13 (52%) of these patients, metastasis was present before amputation. A total of 11 (44%) patients were alive at the time of study with no evidence of the disease (n=3) or with disease (n=8), and 14 (56%) patients died of disease. The mean overall and post-amputation survival were 47±20.519 (range, 11-204) months and 22±4.303 (range, 2-78) months, respectively. The median follow-up was 27 (range, 6-125) months., Conclusion: The most common causes of amputation after LSS were local recurrence and prosthetic infection. Patients who underwent amputation after LSS developed a high rate of distant organ metastasis during follow-up and had reduced survival., Level of Evidence: Level IV, Therapeutic Study.

- Abstract
Objective: The study was aimed to determine the survivorship and functional outcomes of modular endoprosthetic reconstruction in the management of primary and metastatic bone tumors of the lower limbs and to investigate the rate and causes of implant failure., Methods: A total of 84 limbs of 82 patients (49 male, 33 female; mean age=48 years, age range=13-78 years) with a minimum follow-up of 12 months in whom resection and modular endoprosthetic reconstructions were performed for primary or metastatic bone tumors of the lower extremity were retrospectively reviewed and included in the study. The mean follow-up was 43 (range=13-119) months. Functional status was assessed using the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) scoring system at the final follow-up. Implant survival was defined as the time from implantation until partial or complete exchange of the prosthesis secondary to mechanical or nonmechanical causes or amputation. The effects of the anatomical site on functional scores and implant survival were statistically analyzed. Additionally, the effects of diagnosis and adjuvant treatments on functional scores, implant survival, and failure rates were investigated., Results: At the time of the study, 55 patients were still alive with a mean follow-up of 48 (range=15-119) months. The mean MSTS scores resulting from the final follow-up of all patients and of those surviving were 87.9% (range=16%-100%) and 86.8% (range=16%-100%), respectively. Overall implant survival was 95.2%, 89.2%, 87%, and 87% at 1, 2, 3, and 4 years, respectively. Statistically, both functional scores and implant survival analysis in different anatomical sites were found similar. In 15 of the patients (17.8%), endoprosthetic reconstructions had failed. The causes of failure were soft tissue failure (dislocation) in 5 patients, infection in 5, structural/mechanical failure in 2, local recurrence in two, and aseptic loosening in one. The diagnosis and receiving preoperative and/or postoperative adjuvant treatment did not affect functional scores, implant survival or failure rates., Conclusion: The results of this study have shown that modular endoprosthetic replacement can provide satisfactory functional results and a durable mid-term limb salvage option in the management of patients with primary and metastatic bone tumors of the lower limbs., Level of Evidence: Level IV, Therapeutic Study.

- Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to present the mid-term functional outcomes and recurrence rate in patients with giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) treated by intralesional extended curettage, electrocauterization, and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) cementation., Methods: In this retrospective observational study, 79 consecutive patients (41 females, 38 males; mean age=39 years; age range=19-62 years) who were diagnosed and treated for GCTB between 2005 and 2017 were identified from hospital medical records. All patients were treated by intralesional extended curettage using high-speed burr, electrocauterization of the cavity, and filling the defect with PMMA. No additional local adjuvants were used. The mean follow-up period was 47 months (range=24-96). The tumors were graded according to the radiological classification system described by Campanacci. Functional outcomes were evaluated using the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society Score (MSTS) preoperatively, one year postoperatively, and at the final follow-up. Postoperative complications and recurrence rates were recorded., Results: Twenty-nine tumors were located in the distal femur, 23 in the proximal tibia, nine in the distal radius, five in the proximal humerus, five in the pelvis, three in the proximal fibula, two in the distal ulna, two in the distal tibia, and one in the second metatarsal. According to Campanacci classification, 37 tumors were grade III, 32 grade II, and 10 grade I. The mean MSTS score was 46.1% (range 40.2 to 71.4%) preoperatively, 91.7% (range 73.3% to 100%) one year postoperatively, and 86.3 % (range 66.2% to 96,1%) at the final follow-up. The overall complication rate was 7.6%; which included local tumor recurrence in four patients, superficial wound infection in one, and deep wound infection in another. The recurrence rate was 5.1% (4 patients). Recurrent tumors were located at the distal femur in three patients and proximal tibia in one., Conclusion: With satisfactory functional results and low recurrence rates at the mid-term follow-up, GCTB can be treated effectively with intralesional extended curettage, electrocauterization, and PMMA cementation., Level of Evidence: Level IV, Therapeutic study.

- Abstract
The aim of the study is to investigate the risk factors identified in literature that have been associated with prolonged Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT). Our study included patients who developed local wound problems after bone or soft tissue sarcoma surgery with negative margin at our clinic between 2012 and 2018 and treated with NPWT. All patients were followed up of at least 6 months. Sex, albumin level, skin infiltration, type of wound problem, postoperative intensive care unit (ICU) requirement, and intraoperative blood loss were found to be influential factors on NPWT > 10 sessions. We conclude that treatment may be prolonged and the necessary precautions need to be taken in patients with an impaired preoperative nutritional condition, with intraoperative high amount of blood loss, and with long postoperative stays in the ICU as well as if the underlying cause for wound problem is an infection., (© 2020 Medicalhelplines.com Inc and John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

- Abstract
To date, we could find no study concerning the relationship between mechanoreceptors in the joint capsule of the first metatarsophalangeal joint and hallux valgus deformity. We aimed to investigate the presence of mechanoreceptors in samples obtained from the first metatarsophalangeal joint capsules of patients with hallux valgus deformity to improve our understanding of the clinical and histopathological features of the disease. Samples were taken from the first metatarsophalangeal joint capsules of 13 fresh-frozen cadavers with normal anatomy (controls) and 29 patients undergoing surgery for hallux valgus (cases). For light microscopy, excised specimens were fixed in 10% formaldehyde and processed for routine histopathological investigation. All samples were dehydrated in a series of ethanol, cleared in xylene, and embedded in paraffin. Orientation of collagen fibers was determined on Masson's trichrome-stained sections, and mechanoreceptors were evaluated on S-100-immunostained sections. In the sections stained with Masson's trichrome, the orientation of collagen fibers was regular in the control group. However, coarse and disoriented collagen bundles were observed in the hallux valgus cases (P ≤ .05). S-100 immunostaining was positive in the sections of both the cases and controls. Finally, free nerve endings were more abundant in the samples obtained from the capsules of hallux valgus cases than from the control group (P ≤ .05). An increase in the number of free nerve endings within the capsules of the first metatarsophalangeal joints in feet with hallux valgus deformity might have a role in the development of clinically relevant joint pain and instability., (Copyright © 2020 the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. - Abstract
The study conducted a comparison of meat quality, fatty acid profile, and cholesterol amounts of longissimus dorsi (LD) and semitendinosus (ST) muscles of male lambs born to Turkish indigenous sheep breeds raised under intensive conditions. A total of 36 singleton male lambs were used as experimental animals of the Akkaraman (A), Morkaraman (M), Awassi (IW), Karayaka (KR), Kıvırcık (KV), and Middle Anatolian Merino (MAM) pure breeds. All lambs were fed the same diet until they reached a target weight of 40 kg weight. After the feeding period, all lambs were slaughtered and LD and ST muscle samples were collected to determine meat quality traits, fatty acid profile, and cholesterol amounts. Although there were no significant differences between lambs in terms of the fatty acid profile of LD and ST muscles, KR lambs had a higher cholesterol content in both muscles in comparison with the lambs born to other breeds ( p < 0.05 ). While water-holding capacity, dripping loss, pH, color, dry matter, ash, and intramuscular fat values of ST muscles showed differences among breeds ( p < 0.05 ), dripping loss, pH, cooking loss, color, dry matter, ash, protein, and intramuscular fat values of LD muscles differed between breeds ( p < 0.05 ). The data of the current study indicated that meat quality characteristics and cholesterol contents of Turkish indigenous breeds showed differences, and these differences may be used for alternative lamb meat production for the consumer., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no conflict of interest., (Copyright: © 2019 Yüksel Aksoy et al.)

This study compared 20 children hospitalised with acute patellofemoral dislocation with an age-matched healthy control group with no history of knee problems or patellar dislocation. The following morphological parameters were significantly different between the groups: the mean patellar width and length, mean sulcus depth, mean patellar tendon width and total patellar volume. The magnetic resonance imaging findings of this study suggested that structurally smaller than normal patella and patellar tendon volumes are predisposing factors for acute patellofemoral dislocation., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc. - Abstract
A 59-year-old male patient was operated arthroscopically due to a rotator cuff tear. An early postoperative Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection was treated with early arthroscopic debridement and antibiotic therapy. The patient was lost to follow-up and presented to our clinic with Pseudomonas aeruginosa osteomyelitis after two years. Debridement was again performed and antibiotic-impregnated cement beads were filled into the cavity and taken out 6 weeks postoperatively. No findings of infection were observed at the patient's 2nd year follow-up. To our knowledge, this is the first case of Pseudomonas aeruginosa osteomyelitis of the shoulder after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair.
