Marine organisms obtained from Antarctica are prominent sources for many important activities. Algae are known for adapting to various adverse environmental conditions and for producing secondary metabolites with various biological activities. This study examined the enzyme inhibitory properties of six different Antarctic algal extracts.

The Fethiye‐Burdur fault zone is not a single line. Still, it consists of discontinuous northeasterly trending fault segments developed parallel to each other between the Gulf of Fethiye and Burdur Lake. The NE‐trending and leftlateral oblique‐slip Fethiye‐Burdur fault zone bounds the Isparta Angle to the west and is probably a continuation of the Pliny fault zone of the Hellenic arc. Year 1914, 1957, and 1971 earthquakes occurred in the Fethiye‐Burdur fault zone, with magnitudes of 7.1, 7.0, and 6.1, respectively. The epicenter distribution of the earthquakes of the last century indicates the continuation of the Fethiye‐ Burdur fault zone under the Gulf of Fethiye, probably to Rhodos Island. According to GPS measurements, the Fethiye‐Burdur fault zone is the southern limit of the Aegean extensional region. The Aegean region is characterized by coherent motion toward the SW at 30 mm/yr relative to the Eurasian plate. Field observations and fault plane solutions of recent earthquakes in and around the Burdur Lake region reflect normal and left‐lateral oblique faulting considering the NE extension of the fault zone. According to the proposed kinematic model, the different seismotectonic behaviors of the Fethiye‐Burdur fault zone originate in the rigid influence of Yeşilova peridotite massif of the Lycian nappes that occur to the SW of Burdur Lake. The kinematic interactions between the mainly NE‐trending enechelon fault constituents of the Fethiye‐Burdur fault zone result in different seismotectonic characteristics. Consequently, a new kinematic model is obtained for Burdur Lake and its surroundings.

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of L-carnitine and magnesium on the levels of tissue malondialdehyde, 8-hydroxy-2’-deoxyguanosine, and cytokines (tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-6) in streptozotocin-induced experimental diabetes in rats. Eighty male Wistar albino rats (200-250 g) were divided into 8 groups with 10 rats in each group. The groups received the following treatments: Control group; 2 ml distilled water (by gavage); Group 2: 50 mg/kg (b.w.) i.p. streptozotocin; Group 3: 125 mg/kg (b.w.) magnesium; Group 4: 300 mg/kg (b.w.) L-carnitine; Group 5: 125 mg/kg (b.w.) magnesium +300 mg/kg (b.w.) L-carnitine; Group 6: 50 mg/kg (b.w.) streptozotocin +125 mg/kg (b.w.) magnesium; Group 7: 50 mg/kg (b.w.) streptozotocin +300 mg/kg (b.w.) L-carnitine and Group 8: 50 mg/kg (b.w.) streptozotocin +125 mg/ kg (b.w.) magnesium+300 mg/kg (b.w.) L-carnitine administered for 4 weeks. Liver and kidney malondialdehyde, 8-hydroxy-2’-deoxyguanosine, tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin-6 levels did not change in the magnesium, L-carnitine, and magnesium + L-carnitine groups compared to the control. The highest levels of malondialdehyde, 8-hydroxy-2’-deoxyguanosine, tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin-6 were determined only in the group with diabetes (Group 2). Lipid peroxidation, DNA damage, and cytokine levels were significantly reduced in diabetic animals with the administration of magnesium and L-carnitine separately or in combination. Based on the obtained results it can be concluded that magnesium and L-carnitine may have antidiabetic effects, especially in combination.

Antenatal examinations are important in selection for trial of labor, while birth management can be difficult when the patients present at emergency condition. But there is an increased chance of vaginal birth with advanced cervical dilation. This study attempts to evaluate factors associated with success of vaginal birth after cesarean section and to compare the maternal and perinatal outcomes between vaginal birth after cesarean section and intrapartum cesarean section in patients who were admitted to hospital during the active or second stage of labor. A retrospective evaluation was made from the results of 127 patients. Cesarean section was performed in 57 patients; 70 attempted trial of labor. The factors associated with success of vaginal birth after cesarean section were investigated. Maternal and neonatal outcomes were compared between the groups. Vaginal birth after cesarean section was successful in 55% of cases. Advanced cervical opening, effacement, gravidity, parity, and prior vaginal delivery were factors associated with successful vaginal birth. The vaginal birth group had more complications (P0.05). In this study, cervical opening, effacement, gravidity, parity, and prior vaginal delivery were important factors for successful vaginal birth after cesarean section. The patients’ requests influenced outcome. Trial of labor should take into consideration the patient’s preference, together with the proper setting. In this study, it was analyzed if there is a long term relationship among the nominal exchange rate and monetary fundamentals within the periods of 1998:1-2011:2 in Turkey. This relationship has been analysed by using structural VAR (SVAR) model. Besides, Granger causality test and Dolado-Lütkepohl Granger causality test were used to determine if there were a causality relationship among the nominal exchange rate and monetary fundamentals. As a result of the SVAR model, the relationship among the series related to nominal exchange rate and money supply, GDP, interest rate in Turkey in long term were not determined and at the end of causality tests, causality relationship among the nominal exchange rate and monetary fundamentals were not determined.

In this study, countries were analyzed between 1990 and 2011 in order to determine whether a causal relationship exists among current account deficit, GDP, foreign direct investment, and total credits of G7. Analysis took into account the cross-sectional dependence and was applied to test the causality among the variables form the panel. Firstly, panel unit root tests were used for determining stationary of variables. As a result of the panel unit root tests, it was found that GDP and foreign direct investment have a stationary structure and that total credits and current account deficit contain unit root. In order to see whether there is a long-term relationship among the variables or not, the panel co-integration test was used. As a result of the test, it was concluded that there is a co-integration relationship among the series. The possibility of a causal relationship was analyzed among the variables using the causality test developed by Elena Ivona Dumitrescu and Christophe Hurlin (2012). Results of the analysis showed a unidirectional causal relationship from current account deficit and foreign direct investment to GDP. Bidirectional causality was found between current account deficit and total credits. Finally, a unidirectional relationship was found from foreign direct investment to current account deficit and total credits.

Crude oil price is a critical cost factor for manufacturing industries that are of vital importance for economic growth. This study examines the relationship between crude oil prices and the indices of seven Turkish manufacturing sub-sectors over the period 1997:01-2009:12. The error correction model results reveal the long term causality from crude oil prices to chemical petroleum-plastic and basic metal sub-sectors indicating that these sub-sectors are highly sensitive to crude oil prices. We find no causal relationship for other sector indices for short or long time periods.

Bee venom (BV) is a versatile product with extensive applications, boasting antibacterial and anticancer properties. Within this study, we focused on isolating melittin (Mel) from Apis mellifera L. venom and exploring the influence of both BV and Mel on specific enzymes, namely carbonic anhydrase (CA) I, CA II, CA IX, glutathione reductase (GR), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), and neuraminidase (NA). The rationale for selecting these enzymes is that their inhibitors have a particular interest in medicinal chemistry in the treatment of several diseases. BV was obtained using a poison collection apparatus, and Mel was isolated by means of High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). All enzymes, except for CA I and CA II, were commercially sourced and of high purity, and the enzyme assays were carried out spectrophotometrically. Our findings showed that BV inhibited the enzymes with IC 50 values of 0.583-3.32 ng/mL, and Mel showed an inhibition range of 0.528-3.2 ng/mL. In this study, some new hydrazone derivatives (2a-g) was designed, synthesized for first time, and evaluated as multitarget inhibitors of AChE, BChE, hCA I and hCA II. The chemical structures of new hybrids were confirmed by elemental analysis and some spectroscopic techniques. All tested compounds showed low nanomolar inhibition with IC 50 values of in the range of 30.4-264.0 nM against hCA I, 23.2-251.6 nM against hCA II, 12.1-114.3 nM against AChE, and 76.4-134.0 nM against BChE. These compounds inhibited hCA I and AChE more than acetazolamide (AZA) and neostigmine. Among them, compounds 2c and 2e, which have a linear structure, were determined to be the most active inhibitor candidates against these selected enzymes. Molecular docking studies were carried out on the compounds (2a--g), revealing their binding interactions with the active site of AChE, BChE, hCA I and hCA II thus supporting the experimental findings. Additionally, in silico absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) prediction studies of the obtained compounds (2a--g) with in silico approaches were carried out to determine their solubility, whether they have the potential to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB), values such as GI absorption and drug likeness principles., (© 2024 The Author(s). Purpose of Review: Although there are a lot of studies examining the effects of different blocks for postoperative analgesia after video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS), the results are controversial., Recent Findings: Paravertebral block, serratus anterior plane block and erector spinae plane block appear to be effective and beneficial for post-VATS analgesia, but probably in different manners., Summary: All three blocks can be suggested for daily practice, the choice should be based on personal experience and preference of the anesthetist. Oxaliplatin-induced immune thrombocytopenia is a rare but potentially serious complication of chemotherapy. We present the case of a 55-year-old man with stage 4 pancreatic carcinoma who developed immune thrombocytopenia during the 18 th cycle of folinic acid, fluorouracil, irinotecan, and oxaliplatin (FOLFIRINOX) chemotherapy, immediately after oxaliplatin infusion. Despite treatment with methylprednisolone and platelet infusion, the patient's platelet count remained low. Subsequent plasmapheresis and continued steroid therapy resulted in a gradual improvement in platelet count and resolution of symptoms. This case highlights the importance of considering immune thrombocytopenia in patients receiving oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy, and the potential role of plasmapheresis in refractory cases. This study reports a rapid and efficient synthesis of four novel aryl Schiff base derivatives. Biological activity and molecular modeling studies were conducted to evaluate the inhibitory effects of these compounds on human carbonic anhydrases (hCA) and cholinesterases. The results indicate that the triazole-ring-containing compounds have strong inhibitory effects on hCA I, hCA II, acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) targets. Besides comparing the Schiff bases synthesized in our study to reference molecules, we conducted in silico investigations to examine how these compounds interact with their targets. Our studies revealed that these compounds can occupy binding sites and establish interactions with crucial residues, thus inhibiting the functions of the targets. These findings have significant implications as they can be utilized to develop more potent compounds for treating the diseases that these target proteins play crucial roles in or to obtain drug precursors with enhanced efficacy., (© 2024 The Authors. A versatile family of quaternary propargylamines was synthesized employing the KA 2 multicomponent reaction, through the single-step coupling of a number of amines, ketones, and terminal alkynes. Sustainable synthetic procedures using transition metal catalysts were employed in all cases. The inhibitory activity of these molecules was evaluated against human monoaminoxidase (hMAO)-A and hMAO-B enzymes and was found to be significant. The IC 50 values for hMAO-B range from 152.1 to 164.7 nM while the IC 50 values for hMAO-A range from 765.6 to 861.6 nM. Furthermore, these compounds comply with Lipinski's rule of five and exhibit no predicted toxicity. To understand their binding properties with the two target enzymes, key interactions were studied using molecular docking, all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and MM/GBSA binding free energy calculations. Overall, herein, the reported family of propargylamines exhibits promise as potential treatments for neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson's disease. Interestingly, this is the first time a propargylamine scaffold bearing an internal alkyne has been reported to show activity against monoaminoxidases.

The abnormal levels of the human carbonic anhydrase isoenzymes I and II (hCA I and II) and cholinesterase enzymes, namely, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), are linked with various disorders including Alzheimer's disease. In this study, six new nicotinic hydrazide derivatives ( 7 - 12 ) were designed and synthesized for the first time, and their inhibitory profiles against hCA I, hCA II, AChE, and BChE were investigated by in vitro assays and in silico studies. The structures of novel molecules were elucidated by using spectroscopic techniques and elemental analysis. These molecules showed inhibitory activities against hCA I and II with IC 50 values ranging from 7.12 to 45.12 nM. Compared to reference drug acetazolamide (AZA), compound 8 was the most active inhibitor against hCA I and II. On the other hand, it was determined that IC 50 values of the tested molecules ranged between 21.45 and 61.37 nM for AChE and between 18.42 and 54.74 nM for BChE. Among them, compound 12 was the most potent inhibitor of AChE and BChE, with IC 50 values of 21.45 and 18.42 nM, respectively. Introduction: The aim of this study is to examine the effects of Ramadan fasting on melatonin, cortisol, and serotonin levels., Methods: In this study, the blood of 19 healthy male individuals between the ages of 26 and 51, registered in Agri (Turkey) Family Health Center and fasting during Ramadan, was studied. The study was carried out in 2021-2022. The SPSS-22 package program was used in the analysis of the data. Wilcoxon analysis was used in the study., Results: It was determined that the pre-test-post-test melatonin and cortisol levels of the individuals were not statistically significant (p>0.05). It was determined that the pre-test-post-test serotonin difference of the individuals was statistically significant (p<0.05)., Conclusion: It has been determined that Ramadan fasting increases the serotonin level of individuals but does not change the levels of melatonin and cortisol. It was determined that the level of happiness of individuals increased after Ramadan fasting. Longitudinal studies on the effects of Ramadan fasting are recommended., (© 2023. A series of sulfenimide derivatives (1a-i) were investigated as inhibitors of human (hCA-I, hCA-II) and bovine (bCA) carbonic anhydrase enzymes. The compounds were synthesised by the reaction of substituted thiophenols with phthalimide by means of an effective, simple and eco-friendly method and the structures were confirmed by IR, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, MS and elemental analysis. All derivatives except for the methyl derivative ( 1b ) exhibited effective inhibitory action at low micromolar concentrations on human isoforms, but only four derivatives ( 1e , 1f , 1h , 1i ) inhibited the bovine enzyme. The bromo derivative ( 1f) was found to be strongest inhibitor of all three enzymes with KI values of 0.023, 0.044 and 20.57 µM for hCA-I, hCA-II and bCA, respectively. Results of our study will make valuable contributions to carbonic anhydrase inhibition studies for further investigations since inhibitors of this enzyme are important molecules for medicinal chemistry.
