Search

Inspired by the French anthropologist Robert Hertz’s contributions to the sociology of death, a multidisciplinary research group, Refiguring Death Rites, at the Radboud University Nijmegen, Netherlands, has constructed a research project about body donation in Netherlands and Sophie Bolt, being a member of this group, has written this book as a basis of her dissertation. Sophie Bolt – a cultural anthropologist - provides significant insights into human behavior by her study on donation, motivation, death and conflict. Five out of six research chapters of the book including two appendices have already been published in precious journals like Annals of Anatomy or Anatomical Sciences International, previously.

We are pleased to announce the official Joint Meeting of Anatomical Societies of six different countries which will take place in 19-22 May, 2011 in Bursa, Turkey. Anatomical Society of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI), Anatomische Gesellschaft (AG), the Italian Society of Anatomy and Histology (SIAI), the Spanish Anatomical Society (SAE), the Swiss Society of Histology, Anatomy and Embryology (SSAHE/ SGAHE) are gathering under the hosting of the Turkish Society of Anatomy and Clinical Anatomy (TSACA).

The role of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the developing neocortex was reexamined by comparing its expression in rats, mice and guinea pigs, following the protocol for acetylcholinesterase histochemistry (described in Sendemir et al., 1996) in order to determine the suitability of the breeding colony at UludaÛ University for use as an animal model. A total of 103 pups as well as two adult animals of each species were used. In the rat pups, acetylcholinesterase-rich patches were distributed in a vibrissa-related array in the somatosensory cortex soon after birth, whereas regions of the cortex lying between individual patches and between rows of patches in the were depleted enzyme. Mice on postnatal day 3 and older mice revealed lightly stained, acetylcholinesterase positive spots in the center of barrel cores, while the barrel walls remained devoid of acetylcholinesterase; septae that divided the individual barrels were densely enzyme positive. The barrels in the guinea pigs formed before birth. Well- formed barrels were observed by postnatal day 0, and acetylcholinesterase activity gradually decreased by postnatal day 10 but did not fade away. The differential enzyme location in different rodents indicates that its role in the development of thalamocortical connectivity is distinctly different in rats as opposed to mice and guinea pigs.

Metric or nonmetric measurements of bony variations reflecting the characteristics of the population's uniqueness are gateways to anthropologic guidance. This led us to search the occurrence of the peroneal tubercle and trochlea on a group of calcanei belonging to the 13th century Byzantines. Among 147 calcanei (65 right and 82 left) a peroneal tubercle was observed on 28.5 % (10 % right, 18.5 % left), and a trochlea was present on 65 % (26 % right, 39 % left) of the calcanei. There was no side predilection. It is clear that variations of the peroneal tubercle may cause clinical symptoms as well as complicating the painful foot syndromes. Search for greater series of peroneal tubercle incidences would help clinicians to decide over “painful foot syndromes”., Osteolojik oluşumların populasyon karakteristiklerini yansıtan metrik ya da nonmetrik çalışmaları, antropolojik değerlendirme ve yaklaşımlar için yol göstericidir. Bu çalışmada, Geç Bizans Dönemi (MS. 13. yy) calcaneus'larında peroneal tuberkül ve trochlea peronealis oluşumları araştırılmıştır. Geç Bizans Dönemi'ne ait 65'i sağ, 82'si sol olmak üzere toplam 147 calcaneus değerlendirilmiş; sağ tarafta %10, sol tarafta %18.5 oranında peroneal tuberkül; sağ tarafta %26, sol tarafta %39 oranında trochlea peronealis bulunmuştur. Her iki oluşumun taraf farklılığı gösterip göstermediğine bakıldığında lateralizasyonun olmadığı görülmüştür. Peroneal tuberkül varyasyonları, ağrılı ayak sendromları şeklinde, komplike de olabilen klinik semptomların nedeni olabilmektedir. Peroneal tuberkül insidanslarının büyük serilerde araştırılması klinisyenlerin ağrılı ayak sendromları tanılarında yardımcı olabilir.

This paper reports an attempt to evaluate the opinions of 279 medical students on their anatomy education, and tries to give some comments on how it should be. Students answered a questionnaire containing 37 questions, where 11 were open-ended. 89.6 % of the students proposed that anatomy was not a waste of time, and 52.3 % thought that the anatomy they learned was not enough for their present and future conditions. Students wanted more association with clinics, 73 % agreed to have a revision teaching of anatomy after preclinical years. 92.2 % reported that there couldn't be an anatomy education without cadaver, and 70.3 % were willing to dissect. And multiple choice + assay type mixed examination was preferred by 47.3 %. This study which contains the thoughts of the students is presented in order to help education., Bu çalışmada 279 tıp öğrencisinin anatomi eğitimi ile ilgili görüşleri değerlendirilmiş ve anatomi eğitiminin nasıl olması gerektiği konusundaki yorumları toplanmaya çalışılmıştır. Öğrenciler, 11 tanesi açık uçlu olmak üzere toplam 37 soru içeren bir ankete yanıt verdiler. Öğrencilerin % 89.6'sının, anatomi eğitimini bir vakit kaybı olarak görmedikleri, buna karşılık % 52.3 oranında öğrencinin, verilen anatomi eğitiminin geleceğe yönelik ihtiyaçlarını karşılamaktan uzak olduğunu ifade ettikleri görülmüştür. % 73 oranında öğrenci, tıp eğitiminin ileri dönemlerinde hatırlatma derslerinin gerekli olduğunu belirtmişlerdir. Öğrencilerin % 92.2'si kadavrasız anatomi eğitimini düşünemediklerini bildirirken, % 70.3 oranında öğrenci kadavra disseksiyonuna fiilen katılmayı istediklerini bildirmiştir. Öğrencilerin seçmeli ve açık uçlu soruların yer aldığı bir anatomi sınavını ise % 47.3 oranında tercih ettikleri görülmüştür. Öğrenci görüşlerini içeren bu çalışma, eğitime yardımcı olabileceği inancıyle sunulmuştur.

A questionnaire was prepared by the Anatomy Department of Medical School of the Uludag University and presented to 191 students in the beginning of the fourth semester to evaluate their thoughts about their anatomy education in the first and third semesters. 82.7 % of the students (n=158; 53% female and 47 % male) stated that choosing medicine to study was their own will. 68.6 % of the students (n=131) stated they were regularly attending the theoretical lectures in classrooms; 58% of these students think that these lectures are inadequate, while overall inadequacy is expressed by 52.9 % (n=101) of the students. The elective classes opened by the anatomy department were within the first five subjects to be preferred by 82 students (42.9%). Almost half of the students (49.7%) were in favor of studying by themselves. 67% of the students (n=128) requested that the anatomy lectures were to be fully integrated with the clinics. Cadaver was considered as “a must” in anatomy education by 91.1% of the students, while 176 (92.1%) asked for educational materials together with cadavers. Anatomy education was considered to make 45.5% of the students “feel studying in a medical school totally”, while 47.6% responded that the role of the anatomy education was “partly” the reason of such a feeling., Uludağ Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Anatomi Anabilim Dalı tarafından bir anket oluşturulmuş ve 4. yarıyıl başlangıcındaki toplam 191 öğrenci, 1. ve 3. yarıyıllarda aldıkları anatomi eğitimi hakkındaki düşüncelerinin değerlendirilmesi amacıyla çalışmaya dahil edilmiştir. Tıp fakültesine kendi isteğiyle girdiğini ifade eden 158 öğrencinin (% 82.7), % 53'ünün kız % 47'sinin erkek olduğu görülmüştür. 131 öğrencinin (% 68.6) kuramsal derslere devam ettiği, 101 öğrencinin (% 52.9) dersleri yetersiz bulduğu ortaya çıkmıştır. Derslere devam eden öğrenciler de (n=131) ise bu oran % 58 olarak bulunmuştur. Kişisel çalışmayı 95 (% 49.7) öğrencinin tercih ettiği, 82 öğrencinin (% 42.9) ise seçmeli derslerde Anatomi Anabilim Dalı'nın açtığı seçmeli dersleri ilk beş sırada tercih ettiği gözlenmiştir. Ankete katılan öğrencilerden 128 (% 67) öğrencinin, anatomi ders konularının tümüyle klinik bilgilerle beraber verilmesini istedikleri; 174 öğrencinin (% 91.1) kadavra çalışmalarının anatomi eğitiminde mutlaka yer alması gerektiğini; 176 öğrencinin ise (% 92.1) kadavra dışı yardımcı ders araçlarının da kullanılması gerektiğini ifade ettikleri ortaya çıkmıştır. Ayrıca, 91 öğrenci (% 47.6) verilen anatomi eğitiminin öğrenciyi tıp fakültesinde olduğunu hissettirme rolü için “kısmen” yanıtını verirken 87 öğrenci (% 45.5) “tamamıyla” yanıtını vermiştir.

ÖZET Bu çalışmada glandula suprarenalis'lerin postganglioner kromaffin hücrelerindeki simpatik aktivite ve bezlere gelen pre- ganglioner simpatik sinir Merinin dağılımı araştınldı.Deneylerde 73 dişi sıçan kullanıldı. Medulla spinalis'leri tam veya yarım kesilmiş sıçanlarda tuzlu su, insülin, alfa metil-p-tirozin ve alfa metil- p-tirozin sonrası insülin injeksiyonlan yapılarak glandulae supra- renales'te tirozin hidroksilaz aktivitesi ve katekolamin düzeyleri ölçüldü. Glandulae suprarenales innervasyonunu medulla spinalis tam kesüerinin ortadan kaldırdığı ; ancak tirozin hidroksilaz aktivitesinde sağ ve sol bezler arasında farklılık olduğu gözlendi. Medulla spinalis'e yan keşi uygulandığında ise sağlam tarafla, kontrol değerleriyle uyumlu olduğu ve kesili tarafla arasında açık bir asimetri varlığı saptandı. Bu asimetrinin katekolamin sentezi durdurulmuş sıçanlara insülin verildiğinde daha da belirginleştiği görüldü. Sağlam tarafta ilaç etkisine bağlı katekolamin boşalması gözlenirken, kesili tarafın ilaç etkisine yanıt vermediği saptandı. -2- 35

During routine dissection of a 60- 65 years old Caucasian, male cadaver, we found that the ulnarartery is coursing superficially on both forearms. These superficial ulnar arteries (SUA) wereoriginating 2 cm above from termination of the brachial arteries and were running superficiallyto the flexor muscles in forearm. The brachial artery was terminated in the cubital fossa anddivided as radial, common interosseal and recurrent radial arteries. Variations of arteries, muscles and nerves of the upper limb are well documented. Variations ofthe radial artery is most frequent arterial anomaly of the forearm (15,6%), whereas theprevalence of the superficial ulnar artery is less frequent and given as the percentage of 0.7-9.4.Furthermore, its bilateral prevalence is very rare (0.01-0.62%). If it is present, the superficialulnar artery is vulnerable to traumas which may be a cause of hemorrhage and it may be riskfor misguided intra-arterial injections that may be a cause of ischemia, even non-reversiblenecrosis and gangrene in the distal portion of the forearm. Additionally, SUA may be valuablefor arterial cannulations and harvesting fasciocutaneous forearm flaps, Eğitim amaçlı olarak yapılan rutin diseksiyon sırasında, beyaz ırka ait, 60-65 yaşlarında, erkekkadavrada, her iki taraf önkolda yüzeyel seyirli arteria ulnaris varlığı görüldü. Yüzeyel seyirliarteria ulnaris, arteria brachialis’in fossa cubiti içerisinde sonlandığı seviyenin yaklaşık 2 cmkadar proksimalinden ayrılarak, önkolun fleksor kaslarının yüzeyelinde seyretmekteydi. Arteriabrachialis ise fossa cubiti sınırları içerisinde, a. radialis, a. interossea communis ve a. radialisrecurrens olarak üç dala ayrılmaktaydı. Literatürde, üst ekstremitenin damar, sinir ve kas varyasyonları kapsamlı olarak ele alınmıştırve hala önemini koruyan bir konu olarak ele alınmaya devam etmektedir. Üst ekstremitede ensık %15,6 ile a. radialis’e ait varyasyonlar gözlemlenirken, yüzeyel seyirli arteria ulnarisvaryasyonunun görülme sıklığı çok daha azdır (%0,9-9,4). Her iki önkolda varyasyonun görülmedurumu ise oldukça enderdir (%0.01-0.62) ve bu durum kadınlarda daha sık olarakgörülmektedir. A. ulnaris’in cilt altında yüzeyel olarak seyrettiği durumlarda, basit travmalarlabirlikte ciddi kanamaların ortaya çıkması, yanlışlıkla arter içi ilaç verilmesi gibi nedenlerleoluşan iskemiye bağlı nekrozların meydana gelmesi gibi komplikasyonlar ortayaçıkabilmektedir. Ayrıca, yüzeyel seyirli arteria ulnaris varlığının bilinmesi ve akılda tutulması,bölgeye yönelik kanülasyonlar, graft operasyonları gibi girişimler açısından da önemtaşımaktadır

A tendinous junction (connexus intertendineus) of the extensor digitorum longus muscle of theright foot of an adult Caucasian male cadaver was found during our routine dissection. In thiscadaver, a tendinous junction was extending diagonally between the first and second tendonsof the extensor digitorum longus muscle on the dorsum of the right foot. To our knowledge, thisanatomical variation has never been reported previously. According to human anatomytextbooks, in contrast to the corresponding tendons in the hand, all the tendons of the extensordigitorum longus muscle are independent and there is no connexus intertendineus between them.Awareness of the existence of this kind of possible variations should be in mind of surgeonsbefore invasive procedures considering the dorsum of the foot, Musculus extensor digitorum longus, tibia’nın ön kenarının dışyan bölümünde yer alan üç kastanbirisidir. Ayak bileğinin dorsalinde retinaculum musculorum extensorum’ların altından geçtiktensonra ortak bir tendon şeklinde başlayıp daha sonra birbirinden bağımsız dört tendona ayrılır.Eğitim amaçlı yapılan rutin diseksiyon sırasında erişkin, erkek beyaz ırka ait bir kadavrada, sağayak dorsalinde m. extensor digitorum longus’un birinci ve ikinci tendonları arasında birtendinöz bağlantı saptandı. Ayrıca kasın üçüncü parmağa giden tendonu birbirine bitişik ilerleyençift tendon şeklindeydi. Elde bulunan m. extensor digitorum tendonları arasındaki connexusintertendineus’lara benzer şekilde bir anatomik yapının ayakta varlığı, klasik anatomikitaplarında ve literatür taramalarında henüz rapor edilmemiştir. Bu kasın tendonları ve anatomikfarklılıkları hakkındaki bilginin detaylı bilinmesi, ayak sırtını ilgilendiren girişimsel işlemlerdecerrahlar için önemlidir

Epilepsi, genellikle tekrarlayan nöbetlerle tanımlanmaktadır. Epilepside nuclei basale’ye ait yapılarda değişikliklerin olduğu bildirilmiştir. Bu yapıların özellikle nöbetlerin devamlılığı konusunda rol oynadığı ileri sürülmüştür. Gelişmekte olan beyin nöbet oluşumuna oldukça açıktır bu sebeple epilepsi daha sık ortaya çıkmaktadır. Febril konvulsiyon, epilepsi için en bilinen öncüllerden biridir. Karmaşık patolojisi sebebi ile epilepsi etiyolojisinin saptanması ve tanı konulması zordur. Çalışmamızda, Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Radyoloji Anabilim Dalı’ndan 3 Boyutlu Tesla 1 ağırlıklı, 230 kranial manyetik rezonans görüntüsü kullanılmıştır. Epilepsi tanısı konulmuş, basit febril konvulsiyon geçirmiş ve kontrol olacak şekilde 0-5 yaş aralığı için gruplar oluşturulmuştur. Nuclei basale’ye ait nucleus caudatus, putamen, globus pallidus, corpus amygdaloideum, nucleus accumbens ve diencephalon’a ait thalamus’un hacim ölçümleri volBrain, MRICloud ve ImFusion Suite programları ile yapılmıştır. Elde edilen verilerin istatistikler analizleri için SPSS 22.0 programı kullanılmıştır. Genel olarak bulgularımızı değerlendirdiğimizde, epilepsi tanısı konulmuş çocuklarda ekstrapiramidal sistemde rol oynayan nucleus caudatus, globus pallidus ve putamen hacimlerinde kontrol grubuna göre artış, bunun yanında corpus amygdaloideum ve thalamus yapılarında da azalma bulunduğunu belirtebiliriz. Buna ek olarak da corpus amygdaloideum ve thalamus için elde edilen veriler febril konvulsiyon ve kontrol gruplarında; nucleus caudatus, putamen, globus pallidus için elde edilen veriler ise febril konvulsiyon ve epilepsi gruplarında yakın değerler olarak elde edilmiştir. Literatürde, gelişmekte olan beyinde yapılan çalışmalar oldukça azdır, bunun yanında hem çocuklar hem de yetişkinler için nuclei basale’nin hacim bilgisi ile ilgili de fazla veri bulunmamaktadır. Gelişen beyinde epilepsinin başlangıç patolojisine ait elde edilebilecek her veri klinik açıdan önemlidir. Sonuçlarımızın bu patolojiye bir nebze de olsa aydınlatabileceğini düşünüyoruz. Recurrent seizures usually are defined as epilepsy. Studies have reported changes in the structures of nuclei basale in epilepsy. It has been suggested that these structures play a role, especially in the continuity of seizures. The developing brain is quite prone to seizure formation, and the onset of epilepsy occurs more frequently. Febrile convulsion is one of the best-known precursors to epilepsy. Due to its complex pathology, it is difficult to detect and diagnose the etiology of epilepsy. Our study used 230 3D Tesla 1-weighted magnetic resonance images from Bursa Uludağ University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Radiology. Groups were formed for 0-5 years, with a diagnosis of epilepsy, simple febrile convulsion, and control. Volume measurements of nucleus caudatus, putamen, globus pallidus, corpus amygdaloideum, nucleus accumbens, and thalamus of diencephalon of nuclei basale were made with volBrain, MRICloud, and ImFusion Suite programs. SPSS 22.0 program was used for statistical analysis of the obtained data. When we evaluate our findings in general, we can state that there is a volumetric increase in the volumes of the nucleus caudatus, globus pallidus, and putamen, which play a role in the extrapyramidal system in children diagnosed with epilepsy, compared to the children in the control group, as well as a volumetric decrease in the corpus amygdaloideum and thalamus structures. In addition, the data obtained for corpus amygdaloideum, and thalamus were similar in febrile convulsion and control groups; the data obtained for the nucleus caudatus, putamen, and globus pallidus showed similarity in the febrile convulsion and epilepsy groups. Studies in the developing brain are scarce in the literature, and there is not much data on the volume information of nuclei basale for both children and adults. Any data that can be obtained regarding the initial pathology of epilepsy in the developing brain is clinically essential. We think that our results may shed some light on this pathology.

Maxiller foramen incisivum’un 13. yy’a ait geç dönem Bizans ve günümüz kafataslarında morfolojik ve morfometrik özelliklerinin karşılaştırılması konulu tez çalışmamızda, cinsiyeti belirlenemeyen 32 adet 13. yy’a ait geç dönem Bizans ve 24 adet 21. yy’a ait erişkin cranium’u veya maxilla’sı kullanılarak ölçümler yapıldı. Maxiller foramen incisivum’un; çapı, foramen incisivum ile foramen palatinum majus arası mesafe sağ-sol olarak, 3. dens molaris serotinus’un en uzak noktası arası mesafe sağ-sol olarak, spina nasalis posterior arası mesafe, sutura palatina transversa arası mesafe, foramen palatinum majus arası hatta uzaklık, dens incisivus medialis’in en yakın noktası arası mesafe sağ-sol olarak ölçüldü. Elde edilen değerlerin kayıt altına alınan istatistiksel hesaplamaları yapılarak günümüz ile Bizans, sağ taraf ile sol taraf karşılaştırılmaları yapıdı. İstatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark görülmedi. Yapılan literatür taramalarında konu ile ilgili yeterli parametre bulunamadığı için karşılaştırma yapılamadı. Bu tez çalışmasından elde ettiğimiz değerlerin literatüre kazandırılması ile antropoloji ve tıp eğitimine katkı sağlayacağı inancındayız. Özellikle çok az çalışma konusu yapılmış olan foramen incisivum’un konum ölçülerinin bilinmesi açısından faydalı bir çalışma olduğu görüşündeyiz. The comparison of the morphological and morphometric features of the maxillary foramen incisivum were made following measurements on 32 late Byzantine (13th century) and 24 contemporary (21th century) skulls or maxilla. Maxillary foramen incisivum; diameter of foramen incisivum, distance between foramen incisivum and foramen palatinum majus as right-left, distance between the furthermost point of third dens molaris serotinus as right-left, distance between spina nasalis posterior, distance between sutura palatina transversa, the length between foramen palatinum majus, the distance between the closest point of the dens incisivus medialis was measured as right-left. The values obtained, recorded statistical calculations were made and comparisons were made between the present time and the Late Byzantine era skulls, right and left sides. We believe that the values we obtained from this thesis study will contribute to anthropology and medical education by bringing them to the literature. We think that it is a useful study pointing to the position measurements of the maxillary foramen incisivum, which has been the subject of very little study.

Mylohyoid bridging on the mandible is a hyperostotic variation considered as one of the cranial non-metric characteristics. Most researchers have indicated that such non-quantitative traits can be used for the investigation of population history and these traits show differences according to societies. In the present study, we investigated the incidence of mylohyoid groove bridging on 89 half-mandibles (48 right sides, 41 left sides; 39 complete mandibles, nine right and two left half-mandibles) from the Byzantine period,, dated approximately eight centuries back. We observed that the incidence of mylohyoid bridging was 8.9% for the Byzantine mandibles with no side predilection. The incidence of bridging observed in the present sample was compared with those of earlier studies. Mylohyoid bridging may be useful as a non-metric feature in population studies when used in combination with other characteristics.

Objective: Aim of this study is to investigate possible anatomical variations as well as cartilage thickness and surface area that can affect the utility of the tragal cartilage and perichondrium. Background: Cartilage and perichondrial grafts are frequently used in tympanoplasties and middle ear reconstructions. One of the most frequently used cartilage for this purpose is the tragus. Surgeons may face different anatomical characteristics of this cartilage. Literature search has not yet revealed any study that has been performed to define morphological characteristics of the tragal cartilage. Material: A total of twenty tragi of ten adult cadavers were dissected for area and thickness measurements of cartilages. Results: Our study showed that the cartilage tissue between borders of tragus and cartilaginis meatus acustici externi is composed of two separate plates; one superolateral part which we named "surgical tragus" and a inferomedial part that we called "tragal spare cartilage", with the dividing line being incisura cartilaginis meatus acustici. However, we have observed that this "incisura" was missing on two cartilages out of twenty. The greatest thickness was 2.20 mm on the inferior part of the tragus. The thinnest part was the superior medial part of the tragus and was measured 0.7 mm. Our results have also indicated that on average at most 2.19 +/- 0.53 cm(2) of cartilage can be used as tragal reconstruction material. In cases where cartilage harvested from tragus is insufficient, 1.36 +/- 0.67 cm(2) of cartilage on the root of the external meatus is ready to be utilized as reserve material. Conclusion: Findings from the cadaveric tragus specimen show that there are no major pathological changes or conditions on dissected cartilages. The cartilage tissue between borders of tragus and cartilaginis meatus acustici externi is composed of two separate plates; one lateral part which we named "surgical tragus", and a medial part that we called "tragal spare cartilage", ready to be utilized when the surgical tragus is not enough to serve the purpose.

Background. Interaction of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and oxytocin (OT) is among the factors that control smooth muscle proliferation and tumor growth through the oxytocin receptor (OTR). Also, a close functional interaction of OTR and caveolin-1 has been shown to modulate cell growth and proliferation. Methods. We studied surgical samples from 23 leiomyoma patients (aged 33-66 years) with immunocytochemistry. Specimens from five patients (34-76 years), who had hysterectomy for other reasons, served as controls. Tissue samples were cut into serial 1-mu m thick sections for co-localization of SHBG, OTR, proliferation marker p21 and caveolin-1. Results. SHBG was found in smooth muscle cells in all samples. OTR staining occurred in most of these cells in myomas, while controls contained only scattered cells positive for OTR. There were no apparent differences in immunostaining for p21, while immunoreactivity for caveolin-1 was observed in most cells in myomas and in only few cells in controls. Caveolin-1 was mostly co-localized with SHBG and OTR in myoma samples whereas controls showed this co-localization only occasionally. Conclusions. Our observations indicate an interaction of SHBG and OTR, associated with caveolin-1, which may account in part for known non-genomic actions of ovarian steroids. Growth of leiomyomas may be linked to these mechanisms.

Several observations suggest that caveolin-1 has an important role in control of cell proliferation and cancerogenesis. For instance, oxytocin provokes a proliferative response in the prostate tissue when the oxytocin receptor is localized mainly in caveolin-1-enriched domains and an anti-proliferative effect when the same receptor is not localized in caveolae. Moreover, oxytocin concentrations are elevated in prostate tissue of patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). In this study the expression pattern of the molecules caveolin-1, oxytocin receptor, androgen receptor and p21 (cell cycle arrest indicator) was investigated in the prostate tissue of BPH patients and of young controls. We found that both caveolin-1 and oxytocin receptor expression is drastically increased with age in both smooth muscle and epithelium of the prostate. We also found a significantly increased co-localization of the oxytocin receptor with caveolin-1 in both the muscle and the epithelium, especially in BPH patients. Androgen receptor and p21 staining was found throughout the prostate but did not change significantly with age or in BPH patients. We conclude that oxytocin may have a proliferative effect on the prostate tissue through the caveolae-associated receptors and thus contribute to BPH. This process seems to be androgen receptor independent.

In previous studies we have observed the expression of androgen binding protein (ABP) in the rat hypothalamo-neurohypophysial system. With immunocytochemical double staining we found partial co-localization with oxytocin. In the present study we used antibodies to the anti-diuretic hormone arginine vasopressin (AVP) for co-localization with ABP in the rat hypothalamus. Both antigens were seen in the magnocellular paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei. Dense fiber networks with varicosities containing both AVP and ABP immunoreactivity were visible throughout the hypothalamus, the median eminence and in the posterior pituitary lobe. Double immunostaining revealed also co-existence in the parvocellular portion of the paraventricular nucleus and in the suprachiasmatic nucleus. ABP immunoreactive neurons in the preoptic region were devoid of AVP staining, AVP neurons in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis stained only occasionally for ABP. We conclude that both the magnocellular and the parvocellular hypothalamic vasopressin systems are capable of expressing the steroid binding globulin, which is probably subject to axonal transport, along with the peptide hormone. Intrahypothalamic expression of ABP may be among the mechanisms necessary for rapid actions of steroids on hypothalamic neuroendocrine systems.

The presence of a bony bridge in the (bridging trait) hypoglossal canal, with five different modes, was investigated in 25 adult male Byzantine (13th century) skulls. First, we re-evaluated the viability of proposed classification schemes, then for the first time, provided information on the structural features of this part of the occipital bone in a population of Asia Minor. Analysis of the data revealed minor differences in the Byzantine population compared to those previously investigated. Diverse geographical sources may be beneficial in understanding the role of developmental and genetic factors in bridging trait. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Uludağ Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Anatomi Anabilim Dalı tarafından bir anket oluşturulmuş ve 4. yarıyıl başlangıcındaki toplam 191 öğrenci, 1. ve 3. yarıyıllarda aldıkları anatomi eğitimi hakkındaki düşüncelerinin değerlendirilmesi amacıyla çalışmaya dahil edilmiştir. Tıp fakültesine kendi isteğiyle girdiğini ifade eden 158 öğrencinin (% 82.7), % 53’ünün kız % 47’sinin erkek olduğu görülmüştür. 131 öğrencinin (% 68.6) kuramsal derslere devam ettiği, 101 öğrencinin (% 52.9) dersleri yetersiz bulduğu ortaya çıkmıştır. Derslere devam eden öğrenciler de (n=131) ise bu oran % 58 olarak bulunmuştur. Kişisel çalışmayı 95 (% 49.7) öğrencinin tercih ettiği, 82 öğrencinin (% 42.9) ise seçmeli derslerde Anatomi Anabilim Dalı’nın açtığı seçmeli dersleri ilk beş sırada tercih ettiği gözlenmiştir. Ankete katılan öğrencilerden 128 (% 67) öğrencinin, anatomi ders konularının tümüyle klinik bilgilerle beraber verilmesini istedikleri; 174 öğrencinin (% 91.1) kadavra çalışmalarının anatomi eğitiminde mutlaka yer alması gerektiğini; 176 öğrencinin ise (% 92.1) kadavra dışı yardımcı ders araçlarının da kullanılması gerektiğini ifade ettikleri ortaya çıkmıştır. Ayrıca, 91 öğrenci (% 47.6) verilen anatomi eğitiminin öğrenciyi tıp fakültesinde olduğunu hissettirme rolü için “kısmen” yanıtını verirken 87 öğrenci (% 45.5) “tamamıyla” yanıtını vermiştir. A questionnaire was prepared by the Anatomy Department of Medical School of the Uludag University and presented to 191 students in the beginning of the fourth semester to evaluate their thoughts about their anatomy education in the first and third semesters. 82.7 % of the students (n=158; 53% female and 47 % male) stated that choosing medicine to study was their own will. 68.6 % of the students (n=131) stated they were regularly attending the theoretical lectures in classrooms; 58% of these students think that these lectures are inadequate, while overall inadequacy is expressed by 52.9 % (n=101) of the students. The elective classes opened by the anatomy department were within the first five subjects to be preferred by 82 students (42.9%). Almost half of the students (49.7%) were in favor of studying by themselves. 67% of the students (n=128) requested that the anatomy lectures were to be fully integrated with the clinics. Cadaver was considered as “a must” in anatomy education by 91.1% of the students, while 176 (92.1%) asked for educational materials together with cadavers. Anatomy education was considered to make 45.5% of the students “feel studying in a medical school totally”, while 47.6% responded that the role of the anatomy education was “partly” the reason of such a feeling.

Osteolojik oluşumların populasyon karakteristiklerini yansıtan metrik ya da nonmetrik çalışmaları, antropolojik değerlendirme ve yaklaşımlar için yol göstericidir. Bu çalışmada, Geç Bizans Dönemi (MS. 13. yy) calcaneus’larında peroneal tuberkül ve trochlea peronealis oluşumları araştırılmıştır. Geç Bizans Dönemi’ne ait 65’i sağ, 82’si sol olmak üzere toplam 147 calcaneus değerlendirilmiş; sağ tarafta %10, sol tarafta %18.5 oranında peroneal tuberkül; sağ tarafta %26, sol tarafta %39 oranında trochlea peronealis bulunmuştur. Her iki oluşumun taraf farklılığı gösterip göstermediğine bakıldığında lateralizasyonun olmadığı görülmüştür. Peroneal tuberkül varyasyonları, ağrılı ayak sendromları şeklinde, komplike de olabilen klinik semptomların nedeni olabilmektedir. Peroneal tuberkül insidanslarının büyük serilerde araştırılması klinisyenlerin ağrılı ayak sendromları tanılarında yardımcı olabilir. Metric or nonmetric measurements of bony variations reflecting the characteristics of the population’s uniqueness are gateways to anthropologic guidance. This led us to search the occurrence of the peroneal tubercle and trochlea on a group of calcanei belonging to the 13th century Byzantines. Among 147 calcanei (65 right and 82 left) a peroneal tubercle was observed on 28.5 % (10 % right, 18.5 % left), and a trochlea was present on 65 % (26 % right, 39 % left) of the calcanei. There was no side predilection. It is clear that variations of the peroneal tubercle may cause clinical symptoms as well as complicating the painful foot syndromes. Search for greater series of peroneal tubercle incidences would help clinicians to decide over “painful foot syndromes”.

Bu çalışmada 279 tıp öğrencisinin anatomi eğitimi ile ilgili görüşleri değerlendirilmiş ve anatomi eğitiminin nasıl olması gerektiği konusundaki yorumları toplanmaya çalışılmıştır. Öğrenciler, 11 tanesi açık uçlu olmak üzere toplam 37 soru içeren bir ankete yanıt verdiler. Öğrencilerin % 89.6’sının, anatomi eğitimini bir vakit kaybı olarak görmedikleri, buna karşılık % 52.3 oranında öğrencinin, verilen anatomi eğitiminin geleceğe yönelik ihtiyaçlarını karşılamaktan uzak olduğunu ifade ettikleri görülmüştür. % 73 oranında öğrenci, tıp eğitiminin ileri dönemlerinde hatırlatma derslerinin gerekli olduğunu belirtmişlerdir. Öğrencilerin % 92.2’si kadavrasız anatomi eğitimini düşünemediklerini bildirirken, % 70.3 oranında öğrenci kadavra disseksiyonuna fiilen katılmayı istediklerini bildirmiştir. Öğrencilerin seçmeli ve açık uçlu soruların yer aldığı bir anatomi sınavını ise % 47.3 oranında tercih ettikleri görülmüştür. Öğrenci görüşlerini içeren bu çalışma, eğitime yardımcı olabileceği inancıyla sunulmuştur This paper reports an attempt to evaluate the opinions of 279 medical students on their anatomy education, and tries to give some comments on how it should be. Students answered a questionnaire containing 37 questions, where 11 were open-ended. 89.6 % of the students proposed that anatomy was not a waste of time, and 52.3 % thought that the anatomy they learned was not enough for their present and future conditions. Students wanted more association with clinics, 73 % agreed to have a revision teaching of anatomy after preclinical years. 92.2 % reported that there couldn’t be an anatomy education without cadaver, and 70.3 % were willing to dissect. And multiple choice + assay type mixed examination was preferred by 47.3 %. This study which contains the thoughts of the students is presented in order to help education

Kadavra eğitimini tamamlamış öğrenciler üzerinde disseksiyon sırasında veya sonrasında formaldehitin solunum yoluyla alınmasına bağlı olarak ortaya çıkan sorunları araştırmak ve bir sonuca varmak amaçlandı. Formaldehit tıpta dezenfeksiyonda, doku ve organ tesbitinde kullanılan bir maddedir. İnsanlar üzerindeki akut ve kronik zararlı etkileri nedeniyle formaldehitin atmosfer yoğunluğu üzerine kesin sınırlamalar getirilmiştir. Laboratuvarlarda dokuların % 4 'lük formaldehit ile tesbiti atmosferik yoğunluğu 5-7 ppm 'e çıkarmaktadır ve bu miktarlarda üst sınır içinde değerlendirilmektedir. Çalışmamızda 18-33 yaşları arasında 458 öğren ye içinde çoktan seçmeli soruların bulunduğu bir anket formu dağıtılarak, karşılaştıkları sorunları derecelendirerek işaretlemeleri istendi. Öğrencilerimizde formaldehitin, solunum yolu ile alınmasına bağlı olarak bu sisteme ait etkilerinin yüksek oranlarda olduğu gözlendi. Bu oranlar ortam atmosferindeki formol buharının yüksek olduğunu düşündürmektedir. Sonuç olarak ortamın iyi havalandırılması, formol yerine başka maddelerin kullanılması ve öğrencilerin formolün zararları konusunda eğitilmeleri gerektiğine inanılmaktadır. Problems arising from the inhalation of formaldehyde during dissections were investigated on the students who had previously completed their cadaver practicals. Formaldehyde is used in medicine as a desinfeciant and as a tissue and organ fixative. Because of its acute and chronic harmful effects, atmospheric levels of formaldehyde are strictly limited within certain densities. Fixation of tissues by 4 % formaldehyde is enough to make the atmospheric levels reach to 5-7 ppm density, which could be considered as the maximum level. An inquiry form including multiple choice and open-ended questions were given to 458 students between 18-33 years old, and they were asked to assign the problems they faced. The results showed that they had many of problems arising from formaldehyde inhalation. This suggested the high atmospheric level of formaldehyde vapour in our Iab. Better conditioning of the air inside, using less toxic solubles than formaldehyde and informing students on hazards of formaldehyde inhalation seems to be the best result derived from the situation.

Büyüme ve gelişmenin değerle dirilmesi amacıyla Gemlik bölgesi ilkokul öğrencilerinde antropometrik yöntemlerle uyluk ve bacak uzunlukları incelendi. 1207 çocukta sosyo-ekonomik yapı ve kırsal-kentsel kesim farklılıkların, boyun, cinsiyetin ve yaşın bu uzunluklarla ilişkileri araştırıldı. Sosyo-ekonomik durumun alt ekstremite gelişimine belirgin bir etkisi olmadığı saptandı. Upper and lower leg lengths of the primary school children in Gemlik Area were examined by using anthropometric measuring techniques in order to determine the physical growth. The relationship of the differences of socio-economic status and urban and rural sites, height , sex and age with lengths were studied in 1207 childen. As a result, it was determined that the socio-econonıic status has not a detectable effeel on leg growth.

Gemlik bölgesindeki 1207 ilkokul öğrencisinde büyüme ve gelişmenin değerlendirilmesi amacıyla toraks uzunluğu, toraks genişliği ve abdomen uzunluğu ölçüldü. Bulgularımız yaşa, cinse, boy ve ağırlığa göre değerlendirildi. Diğer araştırma sonuçlarıyla karşılaştırılarak ölçümlere etkili olan etmenler tartışıldı . In order to assess the growth and development of 1207 primary school children the thoracic length, chest circumference and abdominal length were measured in Gemlik area. Our findings were evaluated according to the age, sex height and weight of the children and compared with the findings of other researchers. The factors affected to anthropometric measurements were discussed.

Gemlik bölgesinde 1207 ilkokul öğrencisinde antropometrik yöntemlerle pelvis ölçümleri yapılmış, crista'lar, spinalar ve trochanter'ler arası uzunluklar belirlenmiştir. Sonuçlar cinsiyete ve farklı sosyo-ekonomik özellikteki okullara göre değerlendirilmiştir. Bulgularımız araştırmaya konu olan okullar arasında antropometrik ölçümlere yansıtabilecek ölçüde belirgin bir sosyo-ekonomik farkın olmadığını göstermektedir. Elde edilen sonuçlar önceki çalışmalarla karşılaştırılmış ve diğer ülkelerdeki sonuçlardan anlamlı olarak düşük bulunmuştur. The study included 1207 primary school children in Gemlik Area and the biliac, interspinal and intertrochanteric lengths were measured. The results were evaluated according to sex and different socio-economic status. It was concluded from the results that there is no difference in the socio-economic status to be detected by anthropometric methods. The results obtained were compared with the former studies and found significantly tower than the results of the foreign countries.

Bu çalışma, 27-30 Haziran 1991 tarihlerinde Bursa[Türkiye]'da düzenlenen Anatomi Kongresinde bildiri olarak sunulmuştur. Serbest damarlı kemik greftleri bir süredir uzun kemiklerde travma, tümör rezeksiyonu, kaynamama gibi durumlarda defektlerin onanması için kullanılmaktadır. Uzun kemiklerde bu greftin canlılığını koruması, kemiği besleyen a. nutricia nın devamı ile mümkündür. Bu arterlerin kemiğe giriş yerlerini ve sayıları belirlemek amacıyla 29 humenus'ta ölçüm ve analizler yapıldı. Delikler kemiklerin % 36.7'si ile % 6l.0'i arasında dağılmışlardı; ortalama yerleşim yerleri ise kemik uzunluğunun % 54 6'sı idi. Free vascularized bone grafts are used to repair defects of long bones by trauma, tumour resection or non-union. The viability of such a graft can only be maintained by the continuity of the nutrient artery which supplies the bone. Analysis and measurements were made to predict the situation and number of these nutrients foramina on 29 humeri. Foramina were ranged between 36.7-61.0 % of the shaft, and their average situating position was 54.6 % of the bone shaft.

Gemlik bölgesi ilkokul çocuklarında büyüme ve gelişmenin değerlendirilmesi amacıyla oturma yüksekliği ölçüldü. Boy uzunluğu ile ilişkisi yaşa, cinse ve ekonomik düzeylere göre incelendi. Yaşa bağlı olarak boy arttıkça oturma yüksekliğinin arttığı saptandı. Ortalama değerler benzer araştırma sonuçlarıyla karşılaştırıldı. Sonuçlarımız ülkemizde yapılan araştırmalarla benzerlik gösterirken Amerika'da yapılan araştırmaya göre daha düşük olduğu tespit edildi. Ölçümler sırasında sakatlık durumu araştırıldı. Yöremizde fiziksel sakatlığın sorun olmadığı görüldü. The sitting heights of primary school children in Gemlik area were measured in order to determine the physical development. The relationship between eight and silting height were investigated according to age, sex and different socio-economical classes. It was found a positive relationship between sitting height and height by the age. Our findings were compared with the similar studies. As a result, there were not differences between our findings and the findings of other studies made in Turkey. There was difference between the findings of USA. and our study. The findings of USA. were higher than our study. During our study, the disability condition was investigated. It was found that physical disabilities were not important health problem in our region.
