The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of foam roller (FR), dynamic stretching (DS), and passive recovery (PR) on blood pressure (BP) and heart rate variability (HRV) in hearing-impaired athletes after submaximal exercise. Twelve congenital (sensorineural) hearing impaired (>91dB) basketball players aged between 18-30 participated in the study voluntarily. Participants were randomly divided into 3 groups consisting of 4 subjects, and 3 different recovery methods after submaximal treadmill running exercises were performed in a cross-over design. BP and HRV parameters of the participants were measured at 4 different times, (i) pre-exercise, (ii) post-exercise, (ııı) during recovery, and (iv) after recovery. Data were analyzed with a two-way analysis of variance test for repeated measurements (3 groups x 4 times). There was a significant increase in RMSSD and HF compared to PR after the FR recovery and in 10-minute after recovery (p0.05). The FR recovery method applied after submaximal exercise in hearing-impaired basketball players significantly improved HRV compared to PR. Performing FR recovery exercises in the post-exercise or post-competition period may positively affect HRV. FR exercise can be recommended to coaches and athletes as a method of recovery after post-submaximal exercises.

Yaşam süresi uzadıkça mental hastalıklar daha yaygın sağlık sorunları haline gelerek hastaların ve ailelerinin refahını ve yaşam kalitesini oldukça azaltmaktadır. Bu patolojilerin başlamasını önlemek veya geciktirmek için etkili bir strateji olan düzenli egzersizin beyin-kaynaklı nörotrofik faktör (BDNF) gibi nöroprotektif nitelikli hücresel ve moleküler dolaşım faktörleri yoluyla beyin sağlığı üzerindeki faydaları tetiklediği düşünülmektedir. Bu nedenle, bu sistematik derleme, egzersiz kaynaklı BDNF’ nin mental hastalıklar üzerindeki etkisine ilişkin güncel bilgileri özetlemeyi ve bu hastalıklara optimum fayda sağlayacak egzersiz programları oluşturmak için öneriler sunmayı amaçlamaktadır. Sistematik inceleme stratejisi, elektronik veri tabanı sistematik araştırmalarında bir metodoloji olarak spor bilimine uyarlanan raporlama maddeler bildirisi PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses) yönergelerine uygun şekilde yürütülmüştür. Bu kapsamda oluşturulan dışlama ve dahil edilme kriterleri göz önünde bulundurularak 8 tam metin çalışma değerlendirilmiştir. Bu çalışmadan elde edilen bulgular, en az 4 hafta boyunca ve haftada 150 dakika orta şiddetli aerobik ve direnç egzersizlerinin ya da bu egzersizlerin halihazırda devam eden tedavilerle veya bilişsel egzersizlerle birlikte kullanılmasının mental sağlık üzerindeki olumlu etkilerine BDNF' deki artışların aracılık edebileceğini göstermektedir. Bu durum egzersizin azalmış BDNF üretimi sergileyen mental hastalığı olan bireyleri hedefleyebileceği hipotezlerini desteklemektedir. Sonuç olarak egzersiz kaynaklı BDNF düzeylerinin mental sağlıkla ilişkili standart tedavi müdahalelerinin etkinliğini geliştirebileceği ve klinik iyileşmeyle ilişkili potansiyel bir biyobelirteç olabileceği düşünülmektedir. Buna rağmen özellikle farklı şiddet ve sıklıklarda planlanan egzersiz türlerinin ya da kombinasyonlarının BDNF salınımını farklı şekilde etkiliyor oluşu bu çalışma sonuçlarına dayanarak mental sağlığı BDNF kaynaklı geliştirebilecek standart bir egzersiz programı oluşturmayı oldukça zorlaştırmaktadır.

Long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAIs) increase drug compliance and offer a reliable treatment option with stable pharmacokinetics. The aim of our study is to examine the rate and predictors of LAIs' prescription at discharge in inpatients with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. This retrospective study included 400 inpatients. Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the patients, the treatments applied in the past and prescribed at discharge were obtained from the hospitalization files. We compared these characteristics of those who were given LAI treatment at discharge to the patients who were given oral treatments. Thirty-nine percent of the patients were prescribed a LAI at discharge. Duration of illness was longer, and number of previous hospitalizations was higher in the LAI group. Nonadherence to the antipsychotics before the hospitalization, the previous history of LAI use, lack of insight at the admission and no previous antidepressant use were found as independent contributors to LAI prescription as the treatment of discharge in logistic regression analysis. Our study showed that LAIs are used at a high rate in our clinic; however, they are still initiated at a later stage, mostly in chronic patients with a lack of insight and compliance at admission.

The increase in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) along with physical exercise is thought to be one of the main reasons of the positive effect on the cognitive characteristics of elderly persons. The aim of this study is to systematically review the effects of physical exercise on BDNF in elderly people. The methodology of the electronic database survey was based on the preferred reporting clauses for systematic reviews. In this review, 21 full-text studies which have been evaluated in terms of the effects of physical exercise on BDNF in elderly people were reviewed. In most of the studies, there is serious evidence that physical exercise regulates BDNF levels in the elderly. Exercise can become a powerful prescription in combating cognitive diseases associated with neuromuscular disorders, and a sedentary lifestyle, if it can lead to the healing and regeneration of neural tissue through its effect on BDNF.

Formal thought disorder (FTD) refers to abnormal speech patterns that can be characterized by deficiencies in thought organization and direction. The present study aimed to assess the factor structure of FTD and to examine its relationship with cognition and clinical features at first admission in patients with first-episode schizophrenia. We also examined the course of FTD during the twelve months after first admission. We assessed FTD using the alogia items of the Scale for the Assessment of Negative Symptoms and FTD items of the Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms in 160 drug-naive patients. A three-factor structure as a disorganization factor, poverty factor, and verbosity factor were found in principal component analysis. The poverty factor was correlated negatively with executive functions, attention, and global cognition. The poverty factor was also correlated with global functioning. Admission FTD factor scores were not related to global functioning and work/study status at one year. The positive-FTD score decreased from admission to the third month, but no change occurred from the third to the twelfth month. The negative-FTD score did not differ throughout the follow-up. Our findings showed that FTD had three factors. Each factor had a different relationship with cognition and functioning.

Background and Study Aim: Talent identification/development programs are utilized by sports federations to select or train elite athletes. In addition to the established tests that assess perceptive and motor skills, it was deemed significant that cognitive skills should be evaluated as well. The present study was undertaken to assess the utility of Instruction-Based Selective Action Pattern (IBSAP), a novel method that we developed, in estimating perceptive, motor as well as cognitive skills of athletes in order for talent identification. We also investigated the relationship between IBSAP and auditory reaction times (ARTs). Material and Methods: Forty-three students (average age: 12.6 years) participated in the study. Random/fixed-interval ARTs were recorded. IBSAP was applied using a table tennis robot that was set up to throw 30 balls in three different colors to different spots on the table with a frequency of 1 ball/s. The subjects were instructed to ignore the white balls, to touch the yellow balls, and to catch the pink balls before the first trial and their scores were calculated in two consecutive trials according to a scoring system. Results: Our results showed that motor learning, adaptation and reinforcement of the participants were significantly greater in second trial compared with the first trial and that IBSAP values were correlated with ARTs. Conclusions: We conclude that the IBSAP method reliably provides quantitative data on perception, motor as well as cognitive skills and it can be considered as a useful tool for talent identification.

Mental rotation (MR) is the ability to rotate three-dimensional objects using the imagination. As the ability to generate, retrieve, maintain, and manipulate visual-spatial information, MR plays a critical role throughout education and sport. In this aspect our objective in this study was to compare MR performances and academic achievement between students of art, foreign languages (FL), computer-instructional technologies (CIT) and physical education (PE). In the computer-based MR test, the image files of the library “Mental Rotation Stimulus Library” were used with the written permission of the author. A total of 144 participants composed of 79 males and 65 females volunteered in the study. Comparing the academic achievements (AA) with the PE group and art, CIT, FL and control groups; it was observed that all the groups are better than PE (p < 0.05). However, no significant difference was found between PE and all groups in MR performances (p > 0.05). In conclusion, PE students performed similarly with other students in terms of MR, although their AA were low. MR ability is clearly related not only to problem solving, acquiring mathematical knowledge and academic thinking but also to motor abilties.

The aim of the presented research was to examine the reaction times of 13-14-years old racket athletes (RAs) (badminton, table tennis, court tennis) and video game players (VGPs). A total of 96 subjects (68 male, 28 female) participated voluntarily in the research. The mean age of the participants was 13.38± 0.74 years, body weight was 50.60 ±1.5 kilograms (kg), stature was 157.42 ± 13.12 centimeters (cm). The individuals who met the criterion of spending at least 10 hours a week by training / playing video games for at least 5 years were called as RAs / VGPs. RT against auditory and visual stimuli were recorded by using a MP36 device (Biopac System, USA). Shapiro-Wilk test was used to evaluate whether continuous variables were normally distributed. Mann-Whitney U-test and Independent Samples “t” test were used for the comparisons of continuous variables between the groups. Pearson and Spearman rank correlation coefficients were used to evaluate the correlations between the continuous variables. Statistical significance level was accepted as p 0.05). In conclusion, it was determined that the audio-visual hand RT values were similar for the VGPs and RAs.

Objective: Table tennis athletes have short reaction times and specialized skills. Computer games may also decrease reaction times. However the actions of the computer game players are limited to mouse/keyboard/joystick use. The objective of the study is to compare the reaction times and the achievement levels on selective action array of athletes and players. Material and Methods: 10 medical school students that played computer games 10 hours a week for at least 5 years, and 9 table tennis athletes that were trained 10 hours a week for at least 5 years were included in the study. Right/left-hand/foot reaction times against auditory and visual stimuli were recorded for each subject. Selective action array was implemented utilizing a table tennis robot. The robot was set up to send 120 balls in different colors, to different points on the table, in random colors and 90 balls per minute at the same speed. The subjects were asked to ignore the white balls, to touch the yellow balls and to hold the pink balls. The actions that the subjects took, or did not take against each ball were transformed into points. Results: It was found that the mean reaction time for athletes was 196.8ms and 196.0ms for the players. The selective action array total points were similar in athletes and players. While the athletes scored better with yellow and pink balls, players scored better with the white balls. Conclusion: The similar scores and reaction times by players and athletes could be interpreted that it could be beneficial to prioritize visual perception, attention and focusing in selecting athletes and in designing training programs.

ÖZET Parkinson hastalığı nörodejeneratif bir hastalık olup görülme sıklığı yaş ile artmaktadır. Derin beyin stimulasyonu, medikal tedaviye dirençli parkinson hastalarının semptomlarını azaltır ve yaşam kalitesini artırır. Bu çalışmada, derin beyin stimulasyonlu bir olguda koroner arter bypass cerrahi sırasındaki anestezi deneyimimizi sunduk.

ÖZET Amaç: Endoskopik safen ven grefti hazırlanması (EVH) son yıllarda, bazı kli niklerde rutin olarak kullanılmakta olan ve postoperatif dönemde morbidi teyi azaltıp hasta memnuniyetini arttıran bir cerrahi tekniktir. Hastalar ve Yöntemler: Acıbadem Maslak ve Acıbadem Kadıköy Hastaneleri’nde Ekim 2012 ile Mart 2013 tarihleri arasında safen ven greftleri (SVG); kapalı, karbondioksit insuflasyonu kullanılarak endosko pik yöntem ile (The VasoViewTM System, Maquet) hazırlanan 55 vaka ince lendi. Hastaların endoskopik teknikle hazırlanan SVG’lerinin uzunlukları, toplam SVG hazırlanma süresi, postoperatif ağrı skorları, hematom-yara yeri enfeksiyonu gibi lokal bulguları ve gelişen diğer komplikasyonlar kaydedildi. Bulgular: Tüm hastalarda SVG, EVH yöntemi ile hazırlandı, açık tekniğe geçiş olmadı. 2 hastada hazırlanan SVG’lerde gözlenen lokal disseksiyon alanları nedeni ile kısmi olarak kullanılamayan segmentler saptandı. Sonuç: Özellikle EVH tekniğini öğrenme sürecinin tamamlanmasının ardın dan EVHnin hem hastanın kozmetik memnuniyeti açısından hem de posto peratif morbiditeyi azaltması açısından başarılı olacağını düşünmekteyiz.
