Abstract

In this paper, we propose an approach for an application of Bayesian optimization using Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) and concepts from the statistical physics of classical systems. Our method leverages the power of modern machine learning libraries such as NumPyro and JAX, allowing us to perform Bayesian optimization on multiple platforms, including CPUs, GPUs, TPUs, and in parallel. Our approach enables a low entry level for exploration of the methods while maintaining high performance. Abstract

A novel method to reconstruct the energy of hadronic showers in the CMS High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) is presented. The HGCAL is a sampling calorimeter with very fine transverse and longitudinal granularity. The active media are silicon sensors and scintillator tiles readout by SiPMs and the absorbers are a combination of lead and Cu/CuW in the electromagnetic section, and steel in the hadronic section. The shower reconstruction method is based on graph neural networks and it makes use of a dynamic reduction network architecture. It is shown that the algorithm is able to capture and mitigate the main effects that normally hinder the reconstruction of hadronic showers using classical reconstruction methods, by compensating for fluctuations in the multiplicity, energy, and spatial distributions of the shower's constituents. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using test beam data collected in 2018 prototype of the CMS HGCAL accompanied by a section of the CALICE AHCAL prototype. Abstract

Clinical trials are pivotal in the drug discovery process to determine the safety and efficacy of a drug candidate. The high failure rates of these trials are attributed to deficiencies in clinical model development and protocol design. Improvements in the clinical drug design process could therefore yield significant benefits for all stakeholders involved. This paper examines the current challenges faced in clinical trial design and optimization, reviews established classical computational approaches, and introduces quantum algorithms aimed at enhancing these processes. Specifically, the focus is on three critical aspects: clinical trial simulations, site selection, and cohort identification. This study aims to provide a comprehensive framework that leverages quantum computing to innovate and refine the efficiency and effectiveness of clinical trials.

Abstract

Quantum machine learning with quantum kernels for classification problems is a growing area of research. Recently, quantum kernel alignment techniques that parameterise the kernel have been developed, allowing the kernel to be trained and therefore aligned with a specific dataset. While quantum kernel alignment is a promising technique, it has been hampered by considerable training costs because the full kernel matrix must be constructed at every training iteration. Addressing this challenge, we introduce a novel method that seeks to balance efficiency and performance. We present a sub-sampling training approach that uses a subset of the kernel matrix at each training step, thereby reducing the overall computational cost of the training. In this work, we apply the sub-sampling method to synthetic datasets and a real-world breast cancer dataset and demonstrate considerable reductions in the number of circuits required to train the quantum kernel while maintaining classification accuracy., Comment: Paper as accepted on Quantum on 2024-09-18. 6. Communication-Efficient Zeroth-Order Distributed Online Optimization: Algorithm, Theory, and Applications

Abstract

This paper focuses on a multi-agent zeroth-order online optimization problem in a federated learning setting for target tracking. The agents only sense their current distances to their targets and aim to maintain a minimum safe distance from each other to prevent collisions. The coordination among the agents and dissemination of collision-prevention information is managed by a central server using the federated learning paradigm. The proposed formulation leads to an instance of distributed online nonconvex optimization problem that is solved via a group of communication-constrained agents. To deal with the communication limitations of the agents, an error feedback-based compression scheme is utilized for agent-to-server communication. The proposed algorithm is analyzed theoretically for the general class of distributed online nonconvex optimization problems. We provide non-asymptotic convergence rates that show the dominant term is independent of the characteristics of the compression scheme. Our theoretical results feature a new approach that employs significantly more relaxed assumptions in comparison to standard literature. Abstract

Security has emerged as one of the critical requirements in future wireless networks. Unlike traditional cryptography-based security, physical layer security (PLS) exploits various features of the random wireless channel to secure not only the information being communicated but the whole communication process from any type of attack. Future wireless networks are envisioned to feature new technologies such as re-configurable intelligent surfaces, massive multiple input multiple output, and sensing, to accommodate the emerging use-cases. Both, the new technologies and the new use-cases have been found to enrich the channel characteristics by unveiling some new channel features which can be readily exploited to facilitate PLS. This article surveys these new channel features to reveal their potential for PLS implementation. In the course of the article, the assessments of important qualities while selecting a certain channel feature for the PLS application are discussed. The importance of the channel control concept and sensing technologies that facilitate the accessibility of certain channel features are highlighted from the PLS perspective. Security attacks aimed at channel characteristics, rather than the communication itself, in order to disrupt PLS implementations are also discussed. 12. Excited muon production at muon colliders via contact interaction

Abstract

In recent years, with the enlightenment of some issues encountered at muon colliders, muon colliders have become more feasible for the high-energy physics community. For this reason, we studied single production of excited muon at muon colliders via contact interaction. Besides, we assumed that the excited muon is produced via contact interactions and decays to the photon and the muon through the gauge interaction. Then, signal and background analyses were performed at the muon anti-muon collider options with 6 TeV, 14 TeV, and 100 TeV center-of-mass energies for the excited muon. Attainable mass and compositeness scale limits were calculated for the excited muon at the muon anti-muon colliders. As a result of the calculations, it was concluded that the muon-antimuon colliders would be a perfect collider option for the excited muon investigations., Comment: 22 pages, 30 figures, 6 tables

Abstract

The MIP Timing Detector will provide additional timing capabilities for detection of minimum ionizing particles (MIPs) at CMS during the High Luminosity LHC era, improving event reconstruction and pileup rejection. The central portion of the detector, the Barrel Timing Layer (BTL), will be instrumented with LYSO:Ce crystals and Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) providing a time resolution of about 30 ps at the beginning of operation, and degrading to 50-60 ps at the end of the detector lifetime as a result of radiation damage. In this work, we present the results obtained using a 120 GeV proton beam at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility to measure the time resolution of unirradiated sensors. A proof-of-concept of the sensor layout proposed for the barrel region of the MTD, consisting of elongated crystal bars with dimensions of about 3 x 3 x 57 mm$^3$ and with double-ended SiPM readout, is demonstrated. This design provides a robust time measurement independent of the impact point of the MIP along the crystal bar. We tested LYSO:Ce bars of different thickness (2, 3, 4 mm) with a geometry close to the reference design and coupled to SiPMs manufactured by Hamamatsu and Fondazione Bruno Kessler. The various aspects influencing the timing performance such as the crystal thickness, properties of the SiPMs (e.g. photon detection efficiency), and impact angle of the MIP are studied. A time resolution of about 28 ps is measured for MIPs crossing a 3 mm thick crystal bar, corresponding to an MPV energy deposition of 2.6 MeV, and of 22 ps for the 4.2 MeV MPV energy deposition expected in the BTL, matching the detector performance target for unirradiated devices.

Abstract

The Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting energy recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High Luminosity--Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron-proton and proton-proton operation. This report represents an update of the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) of the LHeC, published in 2012. It comprises new results on parton structure of the proton and heavier nuclei, QCD dynamics, electroweak and top-quark physics. It is shown how the LHeC will open a new chapter of nuclear particle physics in extending the accessible kinematic range in lepton-nucleus scattering by several orders of magnitude. Due to enhanced luminosity, large energy and the cleanliness of the hadronic final states, the LHeC has a strong Higgs physics programme and its own discovery potential for new physics. Building on the 2012 CDR, the report represents a detailed updated design of the energy recovery electron linac (ERL) including new lattice, magnet, superconducting radio frequency technology and further components. Challenges of energy recovery are described and the lower energy, high current, 3-turn ERL facility, PERLE at Orsay, is presented which uses the LHeC characteristics serving as a development facility for the design and operation of the LHeC. An updated detector design is presented corresponding to the acceptance, resolution and calibration goals which arise from the Higgs and parton density function physics programmes. The paper also presents novel results on the Future Circular Collider in electron-hadron mode, FCC-eh, which utilises the same ERL technology to further extend the reach of DIS to even higher centre-of-mass energies., Comment: 373 pages, many figures, to be published by J. Abstract

Using lake‐sediment cores to document past seismicity requires a comprehensive understanding of possible lateral variations in depositional processes. This study aims to reveal the lateral variations in earthquake‐induced event deposits throughout Lake Iznik, a large lake located on the middle strand of the North Anatolian Fault. Based on stratigraphic, sedimentological and geochemical analyses of 14 sediment cores from two subbasins across the lake, five different types of event deposits (T1–T5) were identified and characterised. One event deposit type (T5) is restricted to a delta mouth, characterised by the occurrence of authigenic Fe‐Mn carbonates and interpreted to result from flood events. The four other types of event deposits are characterised by their synchronicity between cores and their age consistency with historical earthquakes and are interpreted to be likely generated by earthquakes. The locally prominent 1065 CE historical earthquake that ruptured the sub‐lacustrine Iznik Fault produced at least three different types of event deposits. One deposit type (T2) is only observed for this very local earthquake, implying that the type of event deposit might also depend on ground‐motion parameters. At the lake scale, the occurrence of various event deposits depends on the flow distance from the source of sediment destabilisations to the coring site. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Research on the safety of staple agricultural food products has always been one of humanity's priorities and provides input for dose assessment models. Within this important priority, activity concentrations, transfer factors, and radiological effects of 238U, 232Th, 210Pb, and 40K were studied for selected crops in a village close to the NORM area, located in Central Anatolia region of Turkey. The RESRAD-onsite code has been used to assess the total dose rate. The simulation of the risk analysis covered 80 years. The maximum total dose of 0.5 mSv y−1 was obtained at t = 30 years. Abstract

The article presents results of using remote sensing images and machine learning to map and assess land potential based on time-series of potential Fraction of Absorbed Photosynthetically Active Radiation (FAPAR) composites. Land potential here refers to the potential vegetation productivity in the hypothetical absence of short–term anthropogenic influence, such as intensive agriculture and urbanization. Knowledge on this ecological land potential could support the assessment of levels of land degradation as well as restoration potentials. Monthly aggregated FAPAR time-series of three percentiles (0.05, 0.50 and 0.95 probability) at 250 m spatial resolution were derived from the 8-day GLASS FAPAR V6 product for 2000–2021 and used to determine long-term trends in FAPAR, as well as to model potential FAPAR in the absence of human pressure. CCa 3 million training points sampled from 12,500 locations across the globe were overlaid with 68 bio-physical variables representing climate, terrain, landform, and vegetation cover, as well as several variables representing human pressure including: population count, cropland intensity, nightlights and a human footprint index. The training points were used in an ensemble machine learning model that stacks three base learners (extremely randomized trees, gradient descended trees and artificial neural network) using a linear regressor as meta-learner. The potential FAPAR was then projected by removing the impact of urbanization and intensive agriculture in the covariate layers. The results of strict cross-validation show that the global distribution of FAPAR can be explained with an R2 of 0.89, with the most important covariates being growing season length, forest cover indicator and annual precipitation. From this model, a global map of potential monthly FAPAR for the recent year (2021) was produced, and used to predict gaps in actual vs. potential FAPAR. Abstract

Production of heavy Majorana neutrino $N_{e}$ predicted by left-right symmetric extension of the Standard Model at future {\normalsize TeV} scale $ep$ colliders have been considered. In order to estimate potential of $ep$ colliders for $N_{e}$ search we consider back-groundless process $e^{-}p\rightarrow e^{+}X$ which is consequence of Majorana nature of $N_{e}$. It is shown that {\normalsize linac-LHC} and {\normalsize linac-FCC} based $ep$ colliders will cover much wider regions of $N_{e}$ and $W_{R}$ masses than corresponding linear electron-positron colliders., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

A joint measurement is presented of the branching fractions $B^0_s\to\mu^+\mu^-$ and $B^0\to\mu^+\mu^-$ in proton-proton collisions at the LHC by the CMS and LHCb experiments. The data samples were collected in 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and in 2012 at 8 TeV. The combined analysis produces the first observation of the $B^0_s\to\mu^+\mu^-$ decay, with a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations, and the best measurement of its branching fraction so far. Furthermore, evidence for the $B^0\to\mu^+\mu^-$ decay is obtained with a statistical significance of three standard deviations. The branching fraction measurements are statistically compatible with SM predictions and impose stringent constraints on several theories beyond the SM., Comment: Correspondence should be addressed to cms-and-lhcb-publication-committees@cern.ch

Abstract

IceCube collaboration has published two papers on ultrahigh energy neutrinos observation, recently. They have used the data collected in two years in their first publication, which reveals observation of two PeV energy neutrino events. The second publication of the collaboration including more data has also confirmed main features of the former paper. In literature, various interpretations of the IceCube data have been proposed. In this study, it is shown that PeV energy neutrino events observed by the IceCube collaboration can be interpreted as resonance production of color octet neutrinos with masses in $500-800$ GeV range., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The present note relies on the recently published conceptual design report of the LHeC and extends the first contribution to the European strategy debate in emphasising the role of the LHeC to complement and complete the high luminosity LHC programme. The brief discussion therefore focuses on the importance of high precision PDF and $\alpha_s$ determinations for the physics beyond the Standard Model (GUTs, SUSY, Higgs). Emphasis is also given to the importance of high parton density phenomena in nuclei and their relevance to the heavy ion physics programme at the LHC.

Abstract

This document provides a brief overview of the recently published report on the design of the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), which comprises its physics programme, accelerator physics, technology and main detector concepts. The LHeC exploits and develops challenging, though principally existing, accelerator and detector technologies. This summary is complemented by brief illustrations of some of the highlights of the physics programme, which relies on a vastly extended kinematic range, luminosity and unprecedented precision in deep inelastic scattering. Illustrations are provided regarding high precision QCD, new physics (Higgs, SUSY) and electron-ion physics. The LHeC is designed to run synchronously with the LHC in the twenties and to achieve an integrated luminosity of O(100) fb$^{-1}$. It will become the cleanest high resolution microscope of mankind and will substantially extend as well as complement the investigation of the physics of the TeV energy scale, which has been enabled by the LHC.

In this work we consider pair production of LSP tau-sneutrinos at the Compact Lineer Collider. We assume that tau-sneutrinos decays in to e\textmu pair via RPV interactions. Backgroundless subprocess $e{}^{-}e^{+}\rightarrow\tilde{\nu}\bar{\tilde{\nu}}\rightarrow\mu^{+}\mu^{+}e^{-}e^{-}(\mu^{-}\mu^{-}e^{+}e^{+})$ is analyzed in details. Abstract

The physics programme and the design are described of a new collider for particle and nuclear physics, the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), in which a newly built electron beam of 60 GeV, up to possibly 140 GeV, energy collides with the intense hadron beams of the LHC. Compared to HERA, the kinematic range covered is extended by a factor of twenty in the negative four-momentum squared, $Q^2$, and in the inverse Bjorken $x$, while with the design luminosity of $10^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ the LHeC is projected to exceed the integrated HERA luminosity by two orders of magnitude. The physics programme is devoted to an exploration of the energy frontier, complementing the LHC and its discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model with high precision deep inelastic scattering measurements. These are designed to investigate a variety of fundamental questions in strong and electroweak interactions. The physics programme also includes electron-deuteron and electron-ion scattering in a $(Q^2, 1/x)$ range extended by four orders of magnitude as compared to previous lepton-nucleus DIS experiments for novel investigations of neutron's and nuclear structure, the initial conditions of Quark-Gluon Plasma formation and further quantum chromodynamic phenomena. The LHeC may be realised either as a ring-ring or as a linac-ring collider. Optics and beam dynamics studies are presented for both versions, along with technical design considerations on the interaction region, magnets and further components, together with a design study for a high acceptance detector. Civil engineering and installation studies are presented for the accelerator and the detector. The LHeC can be built within a decade and thus be operated while the LHC runs in its high-luminosity phase. It thus represents a major opportunity for progress in particle physics exploiting the investment made in the LHC.

Abstract

In this study we investigated indirect manifestations of color octet electron at the next generation linear colliders: International Linear Collider (ILC) and Compact Linear Collider (CLIC). Namely, production of two gluons via color octet electron exchange is considered. Signal and background analysis have been performed taking into account initial state radiation and beamstrahlung. We show that color octet electron (e_(8)) manifestation will be seen upto M(e_(8))=1.75 TeV and 1.70 TeV at ILC and CLIC with sqrt(s)=0.5 TeV, respectively. CLIC with sqrt(s)=3 TeV will be sensitive upto M(e_(8))=6.88 TeV., Comment: 7 pages, 11 figures and 4 tables
