The Hall effect is one of the most fundamental but elusive phenomena in condensed matter physics due to the rich variety of underlying mechanisms. Here we report an exceptionally large Hall effect in a frustrated magnet GdCu$_2$ with high conductivity. The Hall conductivity at the base temperature is as high as 4 x 10$^4$ $\Omega^{-1}$cm$^{-1}$ and shows abrupt sign changes under magnetic fields. Remarkably, the giant Hall effect is rapidly suppressed as the longitudinal conductivity is lowered upon increasing temperature or introducing tiny amount of quenched disorder. Our systematic transport measurements together with neutron scattering measurements and ab initio band calculations indicate that the unusual Hall effect can be understood in terms of spin-splitting induced emergence/disappearance of Fermi pockets as well as skew scattering from spin-chiral cluster fluctuations in a field-polarized state. The present study demonstrates complex interplay among magnetization, spin-dependent electronic structure, and spin fluctuations in producing the giant Hall effect in highly conductive frustrated magnets.

We investigated the magnetic helicity of the triple-$q$ magnetic structure of the triangular skyrmion lattice in the ``A-phase" of EuPtSi for a magnetic field along the [111] axis by resonant x-ray diffraction using a circularly polarized beam. We show that all three Fourier components of the triple-$q$ structure are perpendicular to the respective $q$ vectors and have the same helicity. They are connected by the rotation operations about the [111] axis. The helicity is the same as that of the single-$q$ helimagnetic phase at low fields, suggesting that the antisymmetric exchange interaction inherent in the chiral structure supports the formation of the triangular skyrmion lattice. We also observe that the helical plane in the helimagnetic phase is tilted to the magnetic field to form a conical structure before the first-order transition to the skyrmion lattice phase., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in Phys. The spin-dependent band structure of CoS$_2$ which is a candidate for a half-metallic ferromagnet was investigated by both spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, in order to reappraise the half-metallicity and electronic correlations. We determined the three-dimensional Fermi surface and the spin-dependent band structure. As a result, we found that a part of the minority spin bands is on the occupied side in the vicinity of the Fermi level, providing spectroscopic evidence that CoS$_2$ is not but very close to a half-metal. Band calculations using density functional theory with generalized gradient approximation showed a good agreement with the observed majority spin $e_g$ bands, while it could not explain the observed band width of the minority-spin eg bands. On the other hand, theoretical calculations using dynamical mean field theory could better reproduce the strong mass renormalization in the minority-spin $e_g$ bands. All those results strongly suggest the presence of anomalously enhanced spin-dependent electron correlation effects on the electronic structure in the vicinity of the half-metallic state. We also report the temperature dependence of the electronic structure across the Curie temperature and discuss the mechanism of the thermal demagnetization. Our discovery of the anomalously large spin-dependent electronic correlations not only demonstrates a key factor in understanding the electronic structure of half-metals but also provides a motivation to improve theoretical calculations on spin-polarized strongly correlated systems., Comment: 53 pages, 25 figures, 1 table

A magnetic order in orthorhombic GdCu$_2$ was investigated via a single crystal neutron diffraction with thermal neutron. Magnetic peaks were observed at incommensurate positions described by the ordering vector $q$=(${\delta}$,~1,~0) with ${\delta}$=0.678 at 4.6~K. This ordering vector is close to the commensurate one with $q_{\rm c}$=(2/3,~1,~0) reported earlier, but clearly deviates. The incommensurate nature of the magnetic order in GdCu$_2$ is further corroborated by the peak shift with temperature below $T_{\rm N}$., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Magnetic skyrmions are particle-like spin-swirling objects ubiquitously realized in magnets. They are topologically stable chiral kinks composed of multiple modulation waves of spiral spin structures, where the helicity of each spiral is usually selected by antisymmetric exchange interactions in noncentrosymmetric crystals. We report an experimental observation of a distorted triangular lattice of skyrmions in the polar tetragonal magnet EuNiGe$_3$, reflecting a strong coupling with the lattice. Moreover, through resonant x-ray diffraction, we find that the magnetic helicity of the original spiral at zero field is reversed when the skyrmion lattice is formed in a magnetic field. This means that the energy gain provided by the skyrmion lattice formation is larger than the antisymmetric exchange interaction. The magnetic helicities of the cycloidal ordering in EuIrGe$_3$, with a noncentrosymmetric tetragonal structure, have been studied by circularly polarized resonant X-ray diffraction. It is shown that the helicity of each cycloidal domain is uniquely determined and satisfies the symmetry relations of the $C_{4v}$ point group of the crystal structure. The result shows that the cycloidal helicity is determined by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya type antisymmetric exchange interaction. The domain selection and the phase transition by the external magnetic field along [100] and [110] have also been studied. Magnetic materials with highly anisotropic chemical bonding can be exfoliated to realize ultrathin sheets or interfaces with highly controllable optical or spintronics responses, while also promising novel cross-correlation phenomena between electric polarization and the magnetic texture. The vast majority of these van-der-Waals magnets are collinear ferro-, ferri-, or antiferromagnets, with a particular scarcity of lattice-incommensurate helimagnets of defined left- or right-handed rotation sense, or helicity. Here we use polarized neutron scattering to reveal cycloidal, or conical, magnetic structures in DyTe$_3$, with coupled commensurate and incommensurate order parameters, where covalently bonded double-slabs of dysprosium square nets are separated by highly metallic tellurium layers. Based on this ground state and its evolution in a magnetic field as probed by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), we establish a one-dimensional spin model with off-diagonal on-site terms, spatially modulated by the unconventional charge order in DyTe$_3$. The CDW-driven term couples to antiferromagnetism, or to the net magnetization in applied magnetic field, and creates a complex magnetic phase diagram indicative of competing interactions in an easily cleavable helimagnet. The centrosymmetric tetragonal itinerant magnet EuAl$_{4}$ exhibits an intricate magnetic phase diagram including rhombic and square skyrmion-lattice (SkL) phases in the external magnetic field. Here, we report a multi-axis dilatometric investigation of EuAl$_{4}$ by means of a newly designed fiber-Bragg-grating technique complemented by a resonant x-ray scattering experiment, revealing anisotropic magnetostriction and magnetovolume effect associated with successive phase transitions. The rhombic and square SkL phases are found to possess $\sim$0.10% and $\sim$0.03% orthorhombic structural distortion within the $ab$ plane, respectively. We propose that the coupling between the spin system and the lattice deformation should be essential for the structural instability in EuAl$_{4}$, yielding a rich variety of topological spin textures with spontaneous rotational-symmetry breaking as well as a potential controllability of the SkL phases by uniaxial stress or pressure., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, SM: 4 pages, 3 figures. Successive magnetic phase transitions at $T_{\text{N}}$=12.2 K, $T_{\text{N}}^{\;\prime}$=7.0 K, and $T_{\text{N}}^{\;*}$=5.0 K in EuIrGe$_3$, an intermetallic compound with a body centered tetragonal lattice belonging to a polar space group $I4mm$, has been investigated by neutron diffraction and resonant X-ray diffraction. It is shown that EuIrGe$_3$ exhibits an incommensurate longitudinal sinusoidal order with $q\sim (0, 0, 0.792)$ and $m_{q} \parallel c\text{-axis}$ in the high temperature phase ($T_{\text{N}}^{\;\prime}< T < T_{\text{N}}$), which changes to a cycloidal order with $q=(\delta', 0, 0.8)$ ($\delta'\sim 0.017$) and $m_{q} \parallel ac\text{-plane}$ in the intermediate phase ($T_{\text{N}}^{\;*} < T < T_{\text{N}}^{\;\prime}$). In the low temperature phase ($T < T_{\text{N}}^{\;*}$), the cycloidal plane rotates by $45^{\circ}$ to have $q=(\delta, \delta, 0.8)$ ($\delta\sim 0.012$). Multiple transition phenomena in divalent Eu compound EuAl$_4$ with the tetragonal structure were investigated via the single-crystal time-of-flight neutron Laue technique. At 30.0 K below a charge-density-wave (CDW) transition temperature of $T_{\rm CDW}$ = 140 K, superlattice peaks emerge near nuclear Bragg peaks described by an ordering vector $q_{\rm CDW}$=(0 0 ${\delta}_c$) with ${\delta}_c{\sim}$0.19. In contrast, magnetic peaks appear at $q_2 = ({\delta}_2 {\delta}_2 0)$ with ${\delta}_2$ = 0.085 in a magnetic-ordered phase at 13.5 K below $T_{\rm N1}$ = 15.4 K. By further cooling to below $T_{\rm N3}$ = 12.2 K, the magnetic ordering vector changes into $q_1 = ({\delta}_1 0 0)$ with ${\delta}_1$ = 0.17 at 11.5 K and slightly shifts to ${\delta}_1$ = 0.194 at 4.3 K. No distinct change in the magnetic Bragg peak was detected at $T_{\rm N2}$=13.2 K and $T_{\rm N4}$=10.0 K. The structural modulation below $T_{\rm CDW}$ with $q_{\rm CDW}$ is characterized by the absence of the superlattice peak in the (0 0 $l$) axis. As a similar CDW transition was observed in SrAl$_4$, the structural modulation with $q_{\rm CDW}$ could be mainly ascribed to the displacement of Al ions within the tetragonal $ab$-plane. Complex magnetic transitions are in stark contrast to a simple collinear magnetic structure in isovalent EuGa$_4$. The effect of pressure on the unique electronic state of the antiferromagnetic (AF) compound EuCu2Ge2 has been measured in a wide temperature range from 10 mK to 300 K by electrical resistivity measurements up to 10 GPa. The Neel temperature of TN = 15 K at ambient pressure increases monotonically with increasing pressure and becomes a maximum of TN = 27 K at 6.2 GPa but suddenly drops to zero at Pc = 6.5 GPa, suggesting the quantum critical point (QCP) of the valence transition of Eu from a nearly divalent state to that with trivalent weight. The rhomag0 and A values obtained from the low-temperature electrical resistivity based on the Fermi liquid relation of rhomag = rhomag0 + AT^2 exhibit huge and sharp peaks around Pc. The exponent n obtained from the power law dependence rhomag = rhomag0 + BT^n is clearly less than 1.5 at P = Pc = 6. 5 GPa, which is expected at the AF-QCP. These results indicate that Pc coincides with Pv, corresponding to the quantum criticality of the valence transition pressure Pv. The electronic specific heat coefficient, estimated from the generalized Kadowaki-Woods relation, is about 510 mJ/mol K^2 around Pc, suggesting the formation of a heavy-fermion state., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

We have elucidated the nature of the electron correlation effect in uranium compounds by imaging the partial $\mathrm{U}~5f$ density of states (pDOS) of typical itinerant, localized, and heavy fermion uranium compounds by using the $\mathrm{U}~4d-5f$ resonant photoemission spectroscopy. Obtained $\mathrm{U}~5f$ pDOS exhibit a systematic trend depending on the physical properties of compounds. The coherent peak at the Fermi level can be described by the band-structure calculation, but an incoherent peak emerges on the higher binding energy side ($\lesssim 1~\mathrm{eV}$) in the \Uf pDOS of localized and heavy fermion compounds. As the $\mathrm{U}~5f$ state is more localized, the intensity of the incoherent peak is enhanced and its energy position is shifted to higher binding energy. These behaviors are consistent with the prediction of the Mott metal-insulator transition, suggesting that the Hubbard-$U$ type mechanism takes an essential role in the $5f$ electronic structure of actinide materials., Comment: Accepted to PRB Dec. 22, 2018

Magnetic transition phenomena in cubic chiral antiferromagnet EuPtSi with $T_{\rm N}$=4.0~K were investigated by means of single crystal neutron diffraction. At 0.3~K in the ground state, magnetic peaks emerge at positions represented by an ordering vector ${q}_{1}$=$(0.2, 0.3, 0)$ and its cyclic permutation. Upon heating, an additional magnetic peak splitting with hysteresis was uncovered at around $T^*_{\rm N}{\sim}$2.5~K, indicating the presence of a first-order commensurate-incommensurate transition with ${q}^*_{1}$=$(0.2, 0.3, {\delta})$ (${\delta}_{\rm max}{\simeq}$0.04) at $T^*_{\rm N}$. A half-polarized neutron scattering experiment for polarization parallel to the scattering vector revealed that polarization antiparallel to the scattering vector has stronger intensity in both magnetic phases. This feature clarifies the single chiral character of the helical structure with moments lying perpendicular to the ordering vector in both ordered states. Under a vertical magnetic field of 1.2~T for ${B}{\parallel}$[1,1,1] at 1.9~K entering into the so-called $A$ phase, magnetic peaks form characteristic hexagonal patterns in the equatorial scattering plane around nuclear peaks. An ordering vector ${q}_{A}{\simeq}({\pm}0.09, {\pm}0.20, {\mp}0.28)$ of the $A$-phase has similar periodic length as $q_{1}$, and could be the hallmark of a formation of skyrmion lattice in EuPtSi., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in J. The magnetoresistance (MR) of a material is typically insensitive to reversing the applied field direction and varies quadratically with magnetic field in the low-field limit. Quantum effects [1], unusual topological band structures [2], and inhomogeneities that lead to wandering current paths [3, 4] can induce a crossover from quadratic to linear magnetoresistance with increasing magnetic field. Here we explore a series of metallic charge- and spin-density-wave systems that exhibit extremely large positive linear magnetoresistance. By contrast to other linear MR mechanisms, this effect remains robust down to miniscule magnetic fields of tens of Oersted at low temperature. We frame an explanation of this phenomenon in a semi-classical narrative for a broad category of materials with partially-gapped Fermi surfaces due to density waves.

We report $^{31}$P NMR measurements under various magnetic fields up to 7 T for the intermediate valence compound EuNi$_2$P$_2$, which shows heavy electronic states at low temperatures. In the high-temperature region above 40 K, the Knight shift followed the Curie--Weiss law reflecting localized $4f$ states. In addition, the behavior corresponding to the temperature variation of the average valence of Eu was observed in the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$. With the occurrence of the Kondo effect, $1/T_1$ was clearly reduced below 40 K, and the Knight shift becomes almost constant at low temperatures. From these results, the formation of heavy quasiparticles by the hybridization of Eu $4f$ electrons and conduction electrons was clarified from microscopic viewpoints. Furthermore, a characteristic spin fluctuation was observed at low temperatures, which would be associated with valence fluctuations caused by the intermediate valence state of EuNi$_2$P$_2$., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The electronic structures of UX$_3$ (X=Al, Ga, and In) were studied by photoelectron spectroscopy to understand the relationship between their electronic structures and magnetic properties. The band structures and Fermi surfaces of UAl$_3$ and UGa$_3$ were revealed experimentally by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), and they were compared with the result of band-structure calculations. The topologies of the Fermi surfaces and the band structures of UAl$_3$ and UGa$_3$ were explained reasonably well by the calculation, although bands near the Fermi level ($E_\mathrm{F}$) were renormalized owing to the finite electron correlation effect. The topologies of the Fermi surfaces of UAl$_3$ and UGa$_3$ are very similar to each other, except for some minor differences. Such minor differences in their Fermi surface or electron correlation effect might take an essential role in their different magnetic properties. No significant changes were observed between the ARPES spectra of UGa$_3$ in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases, suggesting that UGa$_3$ is an itinerant weak antiferromagnet. The effect of chemical pressure on the electronic structures of UX$_3$ compounds was also studied by utilizing the smaller lattice constants of UAl$_3$ and UGa$_3$ than that of UIn$_3$. The valence band spectrum of UIn$_3$ is accompanied by a satellite-like structure on the high-binding-energy side. The core-level spectrum of UIn$_3$ is also qualitatively different from those of UAl$_3$ and UGa$_3$. These findings suggest that the U~$5f$ states in UIn$_3$ are more localized than those in UAl$_3$ and UGa$_3$., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

Recently Ding et al. [Phys. Rev. B 95, 184404 (2017)] reported that their nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study on EuCo$_2$As$_2$ successfully characterized the antiferromagnetic (AFM) propagation vector of the incommensurate helix AFM state, showing that NMR is a unique tool for determination of the spin structures in incommensurate helical AFMs. Motivated by this work, we have carried out $^{153}$Eu, $^{31}$P and $^{59}$Co NMR measurements on the helical antiferromagnet EuCo$_2$P$_2$ with an AFM ordering temperature $T_{\rm N}$ = 66.5 K. An incommensurate helical AFM structure was clearly confirmed by $^{153}$Eu and $^{31}$P NMR spectra on single crystalline EuCo$_2$P$_2$ in zero magnetic field at 1.6 K and its external magnetic field dependence. Furthermore, based on $^{59}$Co NMR data in both the paramagnetic and the incommensurate AFM states, we have determined the model-independent value of the AFM propagation vector k = (0, 0, 0.73 $\pm$ 0.09)2$\pi$/$c$ where $c$ is the $c$-axis lattice parameter. The magnetic structure of the intermetallic compound EuGa$_4$ was investigated using single-crystal neutron diffraction with the time-of-flight (TOF) Laue technique on the new diffractometer SENJU at MLF of J-PARC. In spite of high neutron absorption of Eu, a vast number of diffraction spots were observed without isotope enrichment. The magnetic reflections were appeared at the positions with the diffraction indices of $h+k+l{\neq}2n$ below 16 K, indicating that the ordering vector is ${\bf q}=(0~0~0)$. Continuous evolution of magnetic reflection intensity below $T_{\rm N}$ follows a squared Brillouin function for $S$=7/2. By adopting a wavelength-dependent absorption collection, the magnetic structure of EuGa$_4$ was revealed that a nearly full magnetic moment of 6.4$~{\mu}_{\rm B}$ of Eu lies within the basal plane of the lattice. The present study reveals a well-localized divalent Eu magnetism in EuGa$_4$ and demonstrates a high ability of SENJU to investigate materials with high neutron absorption., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, 2 Tables. submitted to J. Low-energy quasiparticle (QP) excitations in the heavy-fermion superconductor URu$_2$Si$_2$ were investigated by specific-heat $C(T, H, \phi, \theta)$ measurements of a high-quality single crystal. The occurrence of QP excitations due to the Doppler-shift effect was detected regardless of the field direction in $C(H)$ of the present clean sample, which is in sharp contrast to a previous report. Furthermore, the polar-angle-dependent $C(\theta)$ measured under a rotating magnetic field within the ac plane exhibits a shoulder-like anomaly at $\theta \sim 45$ deg and a sharp dip at $\theta = 90$ deg ($H \parallel a$) in the moderate-field region. These features are supported by theoretical analyses based on microscopic calculations assuming the gap symmetry of $k_z(k_x+ik_y)$, whose gap structure is characterized by a combination of a horizontal line node at the equator and point nodes at the poles. The present results have settled the previous controversy over the gap structure of URu$_2$Si$_2$ and have authenticated its chiral $d$-wave superconductivity., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, published in J. We performed 101Ru nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on the s-wave superconductor CeRu2 and found oscillatory behavior in the spin-echo amplitude at the +-1/2 <-> +-3/2 transitions but not at the +-3/2 <-> +-5/2 transitions. The modulation disappears in the superconducting state or in a magnetic shield, which implies a geomagnetic field effect. Our results indicate that the NQR spin-echo decay curve at the +-1/2 <-> +-3/2 transitions is sensitive to a weak magnetic field., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures

The electronic structures of the ferromagnetic superconductors $\mathrm{UGe}_2$ and $\mathrm{UCoGe}$ in the paramagnetic phase were studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy using soft X-rays ($h\nu =400-500$). The quasi-particle bands with large contributions from $\mathrm{U}~5f$ states were observed in the vicinity of $E_\mathrm{F}$, suggesting that the $\mathrm{U}~5f$ electrons of these compounds have an itinerant character. Their overall band structures were explained by the band-structure calculations treating all the $\mathrm{U}~5f$ electrons as being itinerant. Meanwhile, the states in the vicinity of $E_\mathrm{F}$ show considerable deviations from the results of band-structure calculations, suggesting that the shapes of Fermi surface of these compounds are qualitatively different from the calculations, possibly caused by electron correlation effect in the complicated band structures of the low-symmetry crystals. Strong hybridization between $\mathrm{U}~5f$ and $\mathrm{Co}~3d$ states in $\mathrm{UCoGe}$ were found by the $\mathrm{Co}~2p-3d$ resonant photoemission experiment, suggesting that $\mathrm{Co}~3d$ states have finite contributions to the magnetic, transport, and superconducting properties., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We report 73Ge-NMR and NQR results for ferromagnetic (FM) superconductor URhGe. The magnitude and direction of the internal field, H_int, and parameters of the electric field gradient at the Ge site were determined experimentally. Using powdered polycrystalline samples oriented by different methods, the field dependences of NMR shift and nuclear spin relaxation rates for H_0 // c (easy axis) and H_0 // b were obtained. From the NMR shifts for H_0 // b, we confirmed a gradual suppression of the Curie temperature and observed a phase separation near the spin reorientation. The observation of the phase separation gives microscopic evidence that the spin reorientation under H_0 // b is of first order at low temperatures. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 indicates that the magnetic fluctuations are suppressed for H_0 // c, whereas the fluctuations remain strongly for H_0 // b. The enhancements of both 1/T_1T and the nuclear spin-spin relaxation rate 1/T_2 for H_0 // b toward the spin reorientation field suggest that the field-induced superconductivity in URhGe emerges under the magnetic fluctuations along the b axis and the c axis., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures, to be published in J. We show that the strongly correlated 4f-orbital symmetry of the ground state is revealed by linear dichroism in core-level photoemission spectra as we have discovered for YbRh2Si2 and YbCu2Si2. Theoretical analysis tells us that the linear dichroism reflects the anisotropic charge distributions resulting from crystalline electric field. We have successfully determined the ground-state 4f symmetry for both compounds from the polarization-dependent angle-resolved core-level spectra at a low temperature well below the first excitation energy. We report field and temperature dependent measurements of the thermoelectric power (TEP) across the pseudo-metamagnetic transition (MMT) in CeRu$_2$Si$_2$. We applied the thermoelectric gradient parallel and perpendicular to the field along the c axis of the tetragonal crystal which is the easy magnetization axis. At the MMT at H$_m$=7.8 T, a strong anomaly in the TEP is observed for both configurations with opposite signs. The anomaly at Hm becomes a cascade of anomalies at very low temperature which seems to be a generic feature of the TEP at a change in the topology of the Fermi surface (FS) in heavy Fermion multiband systems. Simultaneously, quantum oscillations in the magnetic field dependence of the TEP are observed for both configurations below and above the MMT., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The electronic structure of the ferromagnetic superconductor URhGe in the paramagnetic phase has been studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy using soft x rays (hn=595-700 eV). Dispersive bands with large contributions from U 5f states were observed in the ARPES spectra, and form Fermi surfaces. The band structure in the paramagnetic phase is partly explained by the band-structure calculation treating all U 5f electrons as being itinerant, suggesting that an itinerant description of U 5f states is a good starting point for this compound. On the other hand, there are qualitative disagreements especially in the band structure near the Fermi level (E_B < 0.5 eV). The experimentally observed bands are less dispersive than the calculation, and the shape of the Fermi surface is different from the calculation. The changes in spectral functions due to the ferromagnetic transition were observed in bands near the Fermi level, suggesting that the ferromagnetism in this compound has an itinerant origin., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

The field-angle-resolved specific heat C(T,H,phi) of the f-electron superconductor CeRu2 (Tc=6.3 K) has been measured at low temperatures down to 90 mK on two single crystals of slightly different qualities. We reveal that the C(phi) oscillation in a rotating magnetic field, originating from the gap anisotropy, diminishes at low temperatures below the characteristic field H*, as expected for an anisotropic gap without nodes. We also observe the suppression of H* by decreasing the gap anisotropy ratio $\Delta_{\rm min}/\Delta_{\rm max}$, a behavior that has been predicted from a microscopic theory for anisotropic s-wave superconductors. We report $^{153}$Eu and $^{69,71}$Ga NMR under a zero magnetic field on the antiferromagnetic state of EuGa$_{4}$ with $T_{\rm{N}}\approx 16$ K. We have successfully observed a $^{153}$Eu zero-field NMR signal with well-resolved nuclear quadrupole splitting in the antiferromagnetic state of EuGa$_{4}$. $^{69,71}$Ga zero-field NMR spectra were also observed below $T_{\rm{N}}$. The internal field and nuclear quadrupole frequency are estimated from a simulation of the spectra by the exact diagonalization of the nuclear spin Hamiltonian matrix. The asymmetrically split zero-field NMR spectra were explained by considering a configuration of the magnetic moments of Eu$^{2+}$ lying in the basal $ab$-plane. The temperature dependence of the internal field, which is proportional to the sublattice magnetization, can be explained by the Brillouin function with $J=S=7/2$, Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, 2 tabeles

We have investigated the field-angle variation of the specific heat C(H, phi, theta) of the heavy-fermion superconductor UPt3 at low temperatures T down to 50 mK, where phi and theta denote the azimuthal and polar angles of the magnetic field H, respectively. For T = 88 mK, C(H, theta=90) increases proportionally to H^{1/2} up to nearly the upper critical field Hc2, indicating the presence of line nodes. By contrast, C(H, theta=0) deviates upward from the H^{1/2} dependence for (H/Hc2)^{1/2} > 0.5. This behavior can be related to the suppression of Hc2 along the c direction, whose origin has not been resolved yet. Our data show that the unusual Hc2 limit becomes marked only when theta is smaller than 30. In order to explore the possible vertical line nodes in the gap structure, we measured the phi dependence of C in wide T and H ranges. However, we did not observe any in-plane angular oscillation of C within the accuracy of dC/C~0.5%. This result implies that field-induced excitations of the heavy quasiparticles occur isotropically with respect to phi, which is apparently contrary to the recent finding of a twofold thermal-conductivity oscillation., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, Selected for an Editors' Choice

The pressure dependent electrical resistivity of URu$_2$Si$_2$ has been studied at high pressure across the first order phase boundary of $P_x$ where the ground state switches under pressure from "hidden order" (HO) to large moment antiferromagnetic (LAFM) states. The electrical transport in URu$_2$Si$_2$ at low temperatures shows a strong sample dependence. We have measured an ultra-clean single crystal whose quality is the highest among those used in previous studies. The generalized power law ${\rho}{\,}={\,}{\rho_0}+{\,}{A_n}T{^n}$ analysis finds that the electric transport property deviates from Fermi liquid theory in the HO phase but obeys the theory well above $P_x$. The analysis using the polynomial in $T$ expression ${\rho}{\,}={\,}{\rho_0}+{\,}{{\alpha}_1}T+{\,}{{\alpha}_2}T{^2}$ reveals the relation ${{\alpha}_1}/{{\alpha}_2}$ $\propto$ $T_{sc}$ in the HO phase. While the pressure dependence of ${{\alpha}_2}$ is very weak, ${{\alpha}_1}$ is roughly proportional to $T_{sc}$. This suggests a strong correlation between the anomalous quasiparticle scattering and the superconductivity and that both have a common origin. The present study clarifies a universality of the HO phase inherent in strongly correlated electron superconductors near quantum criticality.

High-energy-resolution core-level and valence-band photoelectron spectroscopic studies were performed for the heavy Fermion uranium compounds UGe2, UCoGe, URhGe, URu2Si2, UNi2Al3, UPd2Al3, and UPt3 as well as typical localized and itinerant uranium compounds to understand the relationship between the uranium valence state and their core-level spectral line shapes. In addition to the main line and high-binding energy satellite structure recognized in the core-level spectra of uranium compounds, a shoulder structure on the lower binding energy side of the main lines of localized and nearly localized uranium compounds was also found. The spectral line shapes show a systematic variation depending on the U 5f electronic structure. The core-level spectra of UGe2, UCoGe, URhGe, URu2Si2, and UNi2Al3 are rather similar to those of itinerant compounds, suggesting that U 5f electrons in these compounds are well hybridized with ligand states. On the other hand, the core-level spectra of UPd2Al3 and UPt3 show considerably different spectral line shapes from those of the itinerant compounds, suggesting that U 5f electrons in UPd2Al3 and UPt3 are less hybridized with ligand states, leading to the correlated nature of U 5f electrons in these compounds. The dominant final state characters in their core-level spectra suggest that the numbers of 5f electrons in UGe2, UCoGe, URhGe, URu2Si2, UNi2Al3, and UPd2Al3 are close to but less than three, while that of UPt3 is close to two rather than to three., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, J. Resistivity and specific heat measurements were performed in the low carrier unconventional superconductor URu2Si2 on various samples with very different qualities. The superconducting transition temperature (TSC) and the hidden order transition temperature (THO) of these crystals were evaluated as a function of the residual resistivity ratio (RRR). In high quality single crystals the resistivity does not seem to follow a T2 dependence above TSC, indicating that the Fermi liquid regime is restricted to low temperatures. However, an analysis of the isothermal longitudinal magnetoresistivity points out that the T2 dependence may be "spoiled" by residual inhomogeneous superconducting contribution. We discuss a possible scenario concerning the distribution of TSC related with the fact that the hidden order phase is very sensitive to the pressure inhomogeneity., Comment: 10 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in J. We report ^59Co-NMR measurements in UCoAl where a metamagnetism occurs due to enhancement of ferromagnetism by magnetic field. The metamagnetic transition from a paramagnetic (PM) state to a ferromagnetic state is a first order transition at low temperatures, but it changes to a crossover at high temperatures on crossing the critical end pint (CEP) at T_CEP ~ 12 K. The contrasting behavior between the relaxation rates 1/T_1 and 1/T_2 suggests that the longitudinal magnetic fluctuation of U moment is strongly enhanced especially near the CEP. A miniature opposed-anvil high-pressure cell has been developed for magnetic measurement in a commercial superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer. Non-magnetic anvils made of composite ceramic material were used to generate high-pressure with a Cu-Be gasket. We have examined anvils with different culet sizes (1.8, 1.6, 1.4, 1.2, 1.0, 0.8 and 0.6 mm). The pressure generated at low temperature was determined by the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition of lead (Pb). The maximum pressure $P_{max}$ depends on the culet size of the anvil: the values of $P_{max}$ are 2.4 and 7.6 GPa for 1.8 and 0.6 mm culet anvils, respectively. We revealed that the composite ceramic anvil has potential to generate high pressure above 5 GPa. The background magnetization of the Cu-Be gasket is generally two orders of magnitude smaller than the Ni-Cr-Al gasket for the indenter cell. The present cell can be used not only with ferromagnetic and superconducting materials with large magnetization but also with antiferromagnetic compounds with smaller magnetization. The production cost of the present pressure cell is about one tenth of that of a diamond anvil cell. The anvil alignment mechanism is not necessary in the present pressure cell because of the strong fracture toughness (6.5 MPa${\cdot}$m$^{1/2}$) of the composite ceramic anvil. The simplified pressure cell is easy-to-use for researchers who are not familiar with high pressure technology. We report on de Haas-van Alphen effect measurements in the non-centrosymmetric systems CeCoGe3 and LaCoGe3 in magnetic field up to 28 Tesla. In both compounds, two new high frequencies were observed in high fields. The frequencies were not detected in previous lower field measurements. The frequencies do not originate from magnetic breakdown, and, therefore, are likely to be intrinsic features of the compounds. Resistivity measurements performed under pressure in the paramagnetic ground state of CeRu2Si2 are reported. They demonstrate that the relative change of effective mass through the pseudo metamagnetic transition is invariant under pressure. The results are compared with the first order metamagnetic transition due to the antiferromagnetism of Ce0.9La0.1Ru2Si2 which corresponds to the "negative" pressure of CeRu2Si2 by volume expansion. Finally, we describe the link between the spin-depairing of quasiparticles on CeRu2Si2 and that of Cooper pairs on the unconventional heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in J. We have performed magnetization measurements at high magnetic fields of up to 53 T on single crystals of a uranium heavy-fermion compound U$_2$Zn$_{17}$ grown by the Bridgman method. In the antiferromagnetic state below the N\'{e}el temperature $T_{\rm N}$ = 9.7 K, a metamagnetic transition is found at $H_c$ $\simeq$ 32 T for the field along the [11$\bar{2}$0] direction ($a$-axis). The magnetic phase diagram for the field along the [11$\bar{2}$0] direction is given. The magnetization curve shows a nonlinear increase at $H_m$ $\simeq$ 35 T in the paramagnetic state above $T_{\rm N}$ up to a characteristic temperature $T_{{\chi}{\rm max}}$ where the magnetic susceptibility or electrical resistivity shows a maximum value. This metamagnetic behavior of the magnetization at $H_m$ is discussed in comparison with the metamagnetic magnetism of the heavy-fermion superconductors UPt$_3$, URu$_2$Si$_2$, and UPd$_2$Al$_3$. We have also carried out high-pressure resistivity measurement on U$_2$Zn$_{17}$ using a diamond anvil cell up to 8.7 GPa. Noble gas argon was used as a pressure-transmitting medium to ensure a good hydrostatic environment. The N\'{e}el temperature $T_{\rm N}$ is almost pressure-independent up to 4.7 GPa and starts to increase in the higher-pressure region. The pressure dependences of the coefficient of the $T^2$ term in the electrical resistivity $A$, the antiferromagnetic gap $\Delta$, and the characteristic temperature $T_{{\rho}{\rm max}}$ are discussed. It is found that the effect of pressure on the electronic states in U$_2$Zn$_{17}$ is weak compared with those in the other heavy fermion compounds.
