In wellness and spa treatment various forms of exercises are applied, including exercises improving the general condition of the patient. The choice of training depends on the patient's functional condition and the aim to achieve. Therefore, some definite parameters are taken into account, such as muscle strength, neuromuscular coordination, range of movement, effort tolerance. The intensity of dynamic effort can be measured by the performed work, energy expenditure or maximal oxygen consumption during the exercise. Cardio training is a specific physical effort of particular intensity. It is assumed that it includes all types of aerobic exercises during which the pulse rate increases to 60-70% of the maximum heart rate (Zone 2). Background. Bronchial asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition of the airways with periods of shortness of breath, coughing and chest tightness. An infection in pulmonary tracts, caused by athopy and allergic reaction to pollen allergens, leads to bronchial spasm and bronchial mucosa swelling, excessive secretion, and remodelling of bronchial wall. The topic of this research is the influence of Kinesio Taping application on particular lung volume and dynamic capacity parameters, as well as quality of life of patients with acute stage of asthma. Material and methods. 10 patients (6 women, 4 men) with acute stages of asthma were tested during research carried out in Public Hospital in Kup. The average age of patients researched was 56.5 years. Apart from pharmacological treatment in Pulmonology Department of the hospital, the patients were also subjected to standard pulmonary physiotherapy, which included: breathing exercises, chest percussion and efficient coughing training. Additionally, Kinesio Tex tape was used for all patients to increase efficiency, normalize additional breathing muscles' tone, and correct inspiratory chest positioning. Applications were preceded by spirography carried out with the use of Lungtest 1000 apparatus, produced by MES, which meets programming requirements set at European Respiratory Society (ERS) Conference in Copenhagen in 2005. FVC, FEV1, MEF25, MEF50, MEF75 and PEF parameters were used to assess lung activity. Tests were carried out 1 hour after Kinesio Taping application, 24 hours after, and on the day following the application. Modified Borg scale was used to assess dyspnea. Patients' ability to climb levels of staircase was used to assess functional efficiency. Results. Cough reflex and secretion increased 1 hour of Kinesio Tex application, which caused difficulty in carrying out spirography. 24 hours after applications, an improvement in patients' condition was observed. All spirometric parameters improved in relation to initial values. The ability to cover even surface distance increased, and 3 out of 10 patients were able to climb one level of staircase. The value of the parameters slightly decreased the following day, and the MEF25 parameter fell to the initial value. Patients' feeling of dyspnea decreased, on average, from 9 to 5.5 on modified Borg scale 24 hours after Kinesio Tex application and on the following day. Conclusions. The results, therefore, suggest the usefulness of Kinesio Taping in physiotherapy for patients with acute stages of Asthma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background. Coordination abilities make it possible to perform accurate and precise movements in changing outside conditions. The aim of the research was to evaluate the postures of girls and boys aged 14 to 16 examined with Moiré's photogrammetric method, estimate the time of a simple reaction and show a connection between the time of a simple reaction on the visual stimulus and the body posture. Material and methods. 292 people took part in the research, including 153 (52%) girls and 139 (48%) boys from the Grammar School number 3 in Starachowice. The research was done in April and May 2004. Results. In the examined group there were the most cases of lateral curvatures of the spine- 177 (61%) and 132 cases (45%) of posture asymmetries. Among faulty postures in the sagittal plane concave backs dominated -- 74 (25%). There were 3 cases (1%) of rounded backs and 38 cases (13%) of flat backs. Among girls the best time of a simple reaction was obtained by 15-years old (0,28 s), and then there were 16-years old (0,29 s) and 14-years old (0,31 s). Among boys the best time of a simple reaction was obtained by 16-years old (0,27 s), and then there were 15-years old and 14-years old (0,28 s). Conclusions. The analysis of correlation coefficients does not make it possible to state clearly that there is an essential dependence between some posture characteristics and the time of a simple reaction. Obtained results are probably an effect of small-numbered examined groups and not essential statistical correlation. Background. The aim of the research was to assess the influence of complex respiration physiotherapy on pulmonary ventilation activity and physical efficiency in patients during an acute stage of COPD. Material and methods. The research material included 50 patients divided into two groups: group I -- test group -- included patients during the acute stage of COPD; group II -- control group -- consisted of patients during the stable stage of COPD. A selection of pulmonary ventilation activity indexes such as FVC, FEV1, PEF, energy expenditure, measured in MET, based on the 6-minute walk test, subjective perception of dyspnea measured on Borg scale both before and after complex physiotherapy were analysed in the course of research. Results. The FVC and PEF indexes analysis within group I pointed out statistically significant improvement (p<0.05). The increase in FEV1 was not of statistic significance. Within group II statistically significant improvement in all parameters was observed (p<0.05). The analysis of 6-minute-walk test showed a bigger increase in the distance covered by patients with acute stages of COPD. A statistically significant decrease in both static and effort dyspnea (p<0.05) was observed in both groups. Conclusions. A significant discrepancy in the physiotherapy results was observed between group I and group II. The acute stage of COPD hinders the possibility of achieving the improvement in tested indexes, possible in the group of patients during a stable stage of COPD. Background. The aim of the research was to use BODE index to qualify patients with COPD for exercise. Material and methods. Prognostic BODE index was suggested to be used for assessment of effort capacity in patients with CPOD. It takes into account: body weight (BMI), obturation level (O) and dyspnea (D) as well as physical effort capacity. Before rehabilitation, all patients were given a cycle ergometer efficiency test and a full spirographic test with the use of Jaeger's Master-Lab Transfer machine. The body mass index (BMI) was established by dividing body mass by square value of height measured in metres. Obturation was described by the value of FEV1 index in percentage of the due value. A modified MMRC scale was used to assess dyspnoea. Effort was defined by the distance covered during a six-minute walk. Every variable of BODE index was given between 0-3 pts, except BMI which was given between 0-1 pts. BODE index value was 0-10 pts. Results. To assess the correlation between the indexes describing workload during an efficiency test, measured in Watts, and the BODE index the Pearson correlation index was calculated. The result analysis showed a high correlation between workload measured in Watts and the results on BODE scale in both groups. Conclusions. The high level of correlation between average value of indexes assessing effort tolerance in cycle ergometer test and BODE index proves BODE index useful for qualifying patients with COPD for exercise.
