A major impact of human development is the transformation of natural habitats into farming lands and the expansion of built-up areas. Also, plastic pollution is affecting wildlife on a global scale. Discarded plastic is ubiquitous and accessible for birds, which can incorporate them into the nest structure. Here, we describe the differences in type, prevalence, and the amount of anthropogenic nest materials between two populations of terrestrial, mainly farmland bird, the white stork Ciconia ciconia, on a broad geographical scale, from two migratory divides—eastern in Poland and western in Spain (in total 303 nests). In the two populations, we detected significant differences in the incorporation of anthropogenic nest material, as measured by the Human Footprint Index (HFI) and the Impervious Surface Areas (ISA). We found that ISA was positively related to anthropogenic nest material incorporation in the Spanish population, and HFI was positively related to anthropogenic nest material, in contrast to the Polish population, in which the relationships were not significant. Moreover, we showed that the prevalence of nests with anthropogenic nest material was two times higher in Spanish than in the Polish white stork population. This study demonstrates that the behavior of incorporation of the anthropogenic nest material differs between two distinct populations of a single bird species.

Long-term bird monitoring brings vital information on the effects of environmental changes on wildlife. However, covering a large area with direct observations in the field is time-consuming and economically costly. New technologies, such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), are effective and often noninvasive tools successfully used in bird monitoring. However, the stability of the method is essential when handling long-term data in the context of population changes. We examined the efficiency and precision of data collected by UAV and human observers within two distinct populations of the white stork Ciconia ciconia, in Poland and Spain, presenting two different nesting patterns, solitary and colonial breeding. In Polish and Spanish populations, the number of fledglings was significantly lower when recorded by human observer than by UAV, i.e. 2.21 vs 2.60, and 1.35 vs 1.55. The mean time needed to record the number of fledglings was significantly longer when using a UAV than by a human observer. The number of detected nests in colonies differed significantly between the human observer and UAV, on average 13.1 vs 7.4, respectively. The difference number of recorded nests was linked with the type of nest substrates, i.e. on trees, the error was higher than in colonies located on human-made structures. The probability of mistake by the observer was significantly lower when recording the number of fledglings in colonial white storks in Spain than in solitary nesting in Poland. Although UAVs are a helpful tool in bird monitoring, in long-term studies, they must be used with caution and awareness that obtained results might differ from those obtained previously in a long-term monitoring framework.

To balance this disproportion, we describe here the differences in type, prevalence and the amount of anthropogenic nest materials between two populations of terrestrial, mainly farmland bird, the white stork Ciconia ciconia on a broad geographical scale, from two migratory divides – eastern in Poland and western in Spain (in total 303 nests). We detected significant differences in anthropogenic nest material incorporation between two populations in regard to human pressure reflected by Human Footprint Index (HFI) and urbanisation level measured by Impervious Surface Areas (ISA). In Spanish population, we found that probability of anthropogenic nest material incorporation was positively related to ISA, and amount of anthropogenic nest material was positively associated to HFI, in contrast to Polish one, where there was no significant relationship. Moreover, we showed that the prevalence of nests with anthropogenic nest material was two times higher in Spanish than in Polish white stork population. This study demonstrates that the vulnerability to solid waste pollution differs on a population scale within one species.

Food wastes are among the factors with the greatest effects on animal populations. The white stork is among bird species that clearly profit from feeding at landfills, at least in Western Europe and North Africa. However, the rate and the consequences of this feeding are still unknown in the Central-Eastern European population, which differs from the western population not only in terms of migration routes but also in the greater availability of suitable natural breeding habitats due to less intensified agriculture. The aim of the study was to describe the use of landfills and its consequences in terms of probability of nest occupation and breeding effects in different regions of Poland. Although the most important factors influencing nest-site selection and breeding effect are still habitat quality and weather conditions, distance to landfills is important in selection of nest sites. White storks use landfills most intensively late in the breeding season, independently of the density of breeding pairs. The results suggest that the use of landfills is not currently essential in the Central-Eastern European population of the white stork, does not affect breeding effect, and may be more frequent in non-breeders. However, this phenomenon is still developing and requires continuous monitoring.

Plants are used by many bird species as structural elements and as lining materials for nests. In building their nests, birds not only use plant stems, but also transport seeds attached to them. This may lead to dispersal of seeds from the parental population into heterogenic environments. In this study, we investigate the role of nests of the white stork as potential microsites for the establishment and growth of seeds contained in nest materials. From 27 white stork nests, we collected 313 specimens from 23 plant species. Numbers of individual specimens and values of plant species richness were significantly lower in nests occupied by storks than in unoccupied nests. The abandonment of nests promotes the succession of some plant species from seed banks contained in the nests, involving plant species different from those cultivated from the nest seed bank. It should be noted here that the specific physical environments of nests constitute the main factor in the development of a pool of specialised plant species in the nests, with the prevalence of ruderal species. These plants usually derive from local ruderal vegetation, which is abundant in agricultural landscapes. Our study showed that large birds created a microhabitat in their nests which was favourable to nest-mediated seed dispersal, as was the incidental accumulation of plant species as a seed bank in the nest. We show that seeds contained in the nests of large birds may germinate and grow, and that eventually fully-grown plants can produce seeds, especially barochorous plant species.

Human’s activities dominates many aspects of the Earth’s environment; thus animals are forced to adapt and respond to the resulting changes in habitat structure and functioning due to anthropogenic pressure. Along with the growing human population and the associated amount of waste produced, the amount of different type of physical contamination component in environment is increasing. Incorporation of debris in nests may be a mounting avian response to anthropogenic pollution. In this research, we quantified the constituent pieces and total mass of human-derived materials incorporated in white stork nests. The study was conducted on four locations in central Spain where white storks nest along a urbanization gradient. In total, we examined 49 nests. This study demonstrates that the incorporation of debris by white storks into their nests is related to human activity, measured by the Human Footprint Index (HFI). Moreover, the distance between these nests and landfills predicts the occurrence of debris incorporated into nests. Our study shows that birds nest building behaviour is impacted by human activities and pollution in environment.

Animal and meat inspections in abattoirs are important in the surveillance of zoonotic diseases. Veterinary inspections in abattoirs can provide useful data for the management of health and welfare issues of humans and animals. Using the network analysis and ordination technique, in this study, we analyzed the data from 11 years of veterinary inspections in pig slaughterhouses from 16 regions in Poland. Based on the huge data set of 80,187,639 cases of diseases and welfare issues of pigs, the most frequent livestock diseases were identified to be abscesses, soiling, faecal or other contaminations, and congestions, which together accounted for 77.6% of the total condemnations. Spatial and temporal differences in swine diseases between the Polish regions were recognized using the above-mentioned statistical approaches. Moreover, with the use of a quite novel method, not used yet in preventive veterinary medicine, called a heatmap, the most problematic disease and welfare issues in each region in Poland were identified. The use of statistical approaches such as network analysis and ordination technique allow for identification of the health and welfare issues in slaughterhouses when dealing with long-term inspection data based on a very large number of cases, and then have to be adopted in current veterinary medicine.

Choosing an appropriate nest site is essential for successful breeding. Changes in land use cause populations of many species to decline although some species adapt to anthropogenic changes. The white stork Ciconia ciconia commonly uses artificial nest sites. Recently, white storks from Western Europe have been using landfills as feeding sites; the beginnings of this process are being observed in Central-Eastern Europe. The study aimed to determine factors influencing the probability of nest occupation and breeding effect in a Central-Eastern European population of white storks. We used long-term data from Western Poland on breeding effect, nest occupation, the structure supporting the nest, the proximity of the nearest landfills, landfill area, and land cover. The probability of nest occupation was significantly dependent on habitat quality (based on the share of the preferred type of land cover), the structure supporting the nest, and landfill proximity within a specific year. The breeding effect was influenced by habitat quality and nesting structure. We demonstrate that the type of nesting structure is an important factor influencing both the probability of nest reoccupation and breeding effect. However, the significance of landfills appears to be growing, and in recent years, storks prefer occupying nests closer to landfills, which may have significant consequences for the population of the white stork. In 2016, we studied the occurrence of amphibians in 231 selected ponds in the city of Wrocław (Lower Silesia, Poland) and confirmed the occurrence of 10 species: Bombina bombina, Bufo bufo, Bufotes viridis, Hyla arborea, Pelobates fuscus, Pelophylax esculentus complex, Rana arvalis, Rana temporaria, Lissotriton vulgaris and Triturus cristatus. Among all studied sites, the most common were P. esculentus complex (146 occupied sites, 63.2%) and B. bufo (119, 51.5%), while the rarest was P. fuscus (8, 3.5%). The number of species at a single site varied from 0 (28 sites, 12.1%) to 9 (1 site, 0.4%). Frequency and mean amphibian species richness reached 87.9% and 2.7 ± 1.9, respectively. The composition of amphibian species did not change in comparison to previous studies conducted in the years 1997–2009, but declining trends in five species (B. bombina, B. viridis, H. arborea, P. esculentus complex, P. fuscus) were observed (28 compared sites). The results revealed that the permanency of ponds, their occurrence in the vicinity of river valleys, and a high ratio of watercourse length and green area around ponds are positively correlated and have a significant influence on amphibian species richness within the city. Thus, these identified factors should be considered in the course of sustainable urban planning in order to avoid potential conflicts between nature conservation and urban development.

Human pressure exerts a significant influence on animals and the environment. One of its consequences, plastic pollution is considered one of the major threats to fauna as well as a significant conservation issue. In this research, we examined the global pattern of one example of avian behavior in response to pollution-namely, the incorporation of anthropogenic materials into nests-as well as the existing knowledge on this subject. Based on 25 articles, we studied 51 populations, involving 24 bird species, and checked 10,790 nests; as a result, we found that incorporation of debris is correlated with increasing human influence on the environment, measured as the Human Footprint Index. Moreover, the probability of debris incorporation is higher in terrestrial than in marine species. We also identified knowledge bias in favor of marine as opposed to terrestrial species: namely, marine species attract more scientific attention than terrestrial. Furthermore, research approaches to these two ecosystems differ. Undeniably, the factors which influence debris incorporation by birds, the scale of this behavior, and particular forms of use of debris in bird nests are aspects which require long-term standardized research. This is the first global review paper on debris incorporation by birds to demonstrate a close link to human pressure as a driver.

1. Urban ecosystems create suitable habitats for many plant and animal species, including pollinators. However, heterogenic habitats in city centres and suburban areas have various effects on pollinators due to variations in the composition of vegetation and in landscape management by humans. 2. This study compared the abundance and species richness of three main groups of pollinators – wild bees, butterflies, and hoverflies – in Poznan, western Poland, and in three different types of urban green areas – urban grasslands, urban parks, and green infrastructure in housing estates. 3. The total abundance of pollinators was higher in urban grasslands than in housing estates and urban parks. Species composition of pollinator communities differed between the three habitat types. 4. The study results showed that species richness and abundance of butterflies varied between habitat types, whereas no such differences were found in the case of wild bees and hoverflies. Cover of green area, vegetation structure, and plant height were important for the pollinator community; however, these variables had different effects depending on habitat type. 5. These findings revealed that not all urban green areas are equally valuable in terms of local biodiversity. High‐quality urban habitats such as urban grasslands are capable of supporting rich and abundant populations of pollinators. Therefore, it is important to protect high‐value urban green areas and simultaneously strive to improve intensively managed urban habitats through effective planning and new management practices.

Citizen science has emerged as an important tool in biology, ecology, and conservation studies. In this paper, we examined YouTube (YT) videos featuring the behaviour of red (Sciurus vulgaris) and grey (Sciurus carolinensis) squirrels in Europe, in both urban and forest habitats. Our study shows that specific behaviours of these squirrels, such as aggression, grooming and calling, have frequently been recorded on YT videos. The present paper uses this open data for the first time to compare differences between the frequency of some types of behaviour in two habitats. Based on detrended correspondence analysis, we show a significant difference in sets of behaviours between two squirrel species. Our investigation show that YT can be a source for monitoring the behaviour of wild species, especially in urban habitats, thus affording insights into the species plasticity of urban individuals. YT, as part of citizen science, is a potential source of information in behavioural ecology.

Rapidly increasing resources of citizen science databases (CS) collecting information on species occurrence are increasingly useful as a data source for global biodiversity research. The photos attached to records allow to verify the species identification and identify its phenological phase. We assessed CS data's usefulness in large-scale phenological research on temperate forest understory species, using a common and widely distributed in Europe: Anemone nemorosa. We analyzed 9804 photos from CS databases. We found 177 15’ grid cells with ≥10 observations of flowering plants for bootstrap estimation of flowering onset and offset. We predicted flowering dates for the present and future climate according to Shared Socioeconomic Pathways averaged over four global circulation models for 2040–60 and 2060–80 across A. nemorosa natural range. The estimated magnitude of change in the flowering phenology for both future periods is comparable. The estimated flowering onset median was 24–41 days earlier while flowering offset median was 19–34 days earlier than predicted for the current climate. We estimated a flowering length median of up to 7 days longer than for current climatic conditions. The predicted changes in the phenology of flowering will not significantly change the duration of flowering but will accelerate onset of this phenophase by about one month. Our study showed that CS might provide a valuable dataset that allows for developing reliable models of plant phenology. It was possible due to a large sample size, resulting from species characteristics: flowering when wider audience is interested in searching spring indicators, easy identification and abundant occurrence. We demonstrated that using dataset of such spatiotemporal extent can cautiously be used for development of future predictions. Such approach allows for evaluating flowering phenology in the understory and to improve understanding the consequences of climate change for biodiversity and functioning of temperate ecosystems.

Solid waste pollution (garbage discarded by humans, such as plastic, metal, paper) has received increased attention given its importance as a global threat to biodiversity. Recent studies highlight how animals incorporate anthropogenic materials into their life-cycle, for example in avian nest construction. While increasingly monitored in natural areas, the influence of solid waste pollution on wildlife has been seldomexplored in the urban habitat. There is limited data on the relationship between anthropogenic solid waste pollution, nest design, and reproductive success in an urban context.We address this knowledge gap (i) by investigating the presence of environmental solid waste pollution in the breeding habitats of great tits Parus major and blue tits Cyanistes caeruleus reproducing in a gradient of urbanisation, and (ii) by quantifying (ii) the contribution of different anthropogenic materials in their nests. We further examine potential drivers of solid waste pollution by inferring three distinct properties of the urban space: environmental solid waste pollution on the ground, human presence, and the intensity of urbanisation (e.g impervious surfaces) in nestbox vicinity. Finally, (iii) we explore the relationship between anthropogenic nest materials and reproductive success. We found that environmental solid waste pollution was positively associated with human presence and urbanisation intensity. There was also a positive relationship between increased human presence and the amount of anthropogenicmaterials in great tit nests. Interestingly, in both species, anthropogenic nest materials covaried negatively with nest materials of animal origin (fur and feathers).We suggest that fur and feathers – key insulating materials in nest design – may be scarcer in areas with high levels of human presence, and are consequently replaced with anthropogenic nest materials. Pollinating insects are under high human pressure due to agricultural intensification and urbanization. Although many research and conservation projects have been applied worldwide, there is still a need for a comprehensive approach that meets local conditioning and capabilities. This paper investigated the composition, abundance, richness, alpha, beta, and gamma-diversity of pollinators between unused railway embankments and semi-natural grasslands. On 50 study sites (25 sites in unused railways and 25 their reference on grasslands), we collected data on the abundance, species richness and species diversity of bees, butterflies, and hoverflies. We conducted five samplings yearly (April–September) for two years, 2017–2018. To assess differences in abundance, species richness, alpha and beta diversity of pollinators between unused railways and controls, we used generalized linear mixed models (GLMM). To compare the composition of pollinator species, we applied non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS). Abundance, species richness, and Shannon-Wiener diversity index of all three groups of pollinators were significantly higher in unused railway lines than in control grasslands. Pollinator communities were more constant in unused railway lines than in grasslands. The NMDS analysis highlighted the importance of these structures for bee, butterfly and hoverfly communities, which were a subset of grassland species, but were more abundant. We indicated the highest total taxonomic beta-diversity for bees, butterflies, and hoverflies and species turnover for bees and butterflies in control grassland compared with unused railway lines. The taxonomical nestedness was significantly higher in unused railways lines for bees and butterflies than in control grasslands. In the case of hoverflies, we did not found any significant differences in species turnover and nestedness. Unused railway lines may act as a conservation tool for pollinator communities in intensively managed farmland and complement the declining semi-natural habitats.

Due to their falling cost, unmanned aerial vehicles, often called drones, are increasingly used as a tool in bird research and conservation. However, behavioural responses of birds to flying drones are still not well understood, for example do birds recognize drones as predators, as benign, or as neutral elements? How do they react to drones? We answered these questions and described the behaviour of birds toward drones during a study with White Stork Ciconia ciconia in north-eastern Poland. We used a small quadrocopter and noted flight initiation distances (FID) of adult storks on nests and behavioural reactions of their young towards drones. During nest inspections by drone, adult White Storks showed FIDs of between 1 and 20 metres, but occasionally did not even flush during drone approaches. FID was mainly affected by breeding stage, but some storks even ignored the working drones close to the nest (14%). Birds that escaped from the nest at the egg stage, returned to it on average within 23 seconds. The most common reactions of young White Storks to the drone were scaring (42%) and akinesis (34%). The rapid return of adult storks to the nest, even when scared away, shows that drones are not an highly invasive tool for examining their breeding outputs, even during the most sensitive period, i.e. egg stage. We believe that drones will soon become an important and common tool in research of the White Stork for determining breeding success and examining nests for hazards, e.g. waste, strings or electrocution risk. Our research can be a useful guide to researchers for predicting stork behaviour during inspection of their nests in the near future.

We previously demonstrated that small mammals impact plant recruitment globally via size-dependent seed predation, generating a unimodal pattern across ecosystems. Chen et al. (2021) critiqued our seed removal analysis, advocating corrections for exposure time. We show such manipulations are unwarranted and argue for increased emphasis on plant recruitment metrics.

Invasive alien plant species in a new location usually lose their native enemies, but new interactions with local herbivores can also significantly influence their population dynamics. Seed predators have a strong effect on the seed banks, seedling recruitment, and establishment of a plant population. A given plant’s effective defence of its seeds from seed predators ensures its survival. Here, we describe a new kind of physical protection in the wild cucumber (Echinocystis lobata) in its invasive range: the production, in the central part of the fruit’s fibre frame, of 1 or 2 additional seeds which cannot be released. Research was conducted in riparian habitats in the central part of Poland. After performing three different studies to examine this phenomenon, we found that, on average, 34% of individual wild cucumber fruits contained additional trapped seeds which could not be released. Our results showed that trapped seeds have the same ability to germinate as normally released seeds, but that they differ from normal seeds in weight and shape. The frequency of removal of trapped seeds by rodents was significantly lower than that of normally released seeds. This mechanism is likely to change seed distribution in the wild cucumber’s environment.

Birds have been using anthropogenic materials for nest construction for the past few decades. However, there is a trade-off between the use of new nesting material, which is often linked to greater breeding success, and the higher risk of nestling mortality due to entanglement or ingestion of debris. Here, we investigate the incorporation of anthropogenic materials into nests of the white stork Ciconia ciconia, based on a long-term study of a population in Western Poland. We recorded at least one item of debris in 50 and 42% of nests at the egg and nestling stages, respectively. More debris was found in nests located in territories with higher number of anthropogenic material in the surrounding environment. We found a relationship between the age of females, the number of debris in the area surrounding a nest, and the number of debris in the nest. We found no significant effect of the total number of debris in nests on clutch size, number of fledglings, or breeding success. Studies on the influence of the age and sex of individuals in understanding this behaviour and its drivers in bird populations should be continued. Prostitution is an exchange of sexual services for economic profit which predominantly reflects men’s desire for sexually attractive women. These preferences could be shaped by sexual selection, as a woman’s sexual attractiveness is believed to be a cue of fertility. Using data from Polish prostitutes, we investigated whether cues of fertility are associated with the price for sex. In line with evolutionary predictions, prostitute’s age and body mass index (BMI) were negatively correlated with the price for sex, while breast size (except for very large breasts) and number of sexual offerings were positively associated with the price for sex. This suggests that young, slim prostitutes with moderate breasts are more expensive than older, stockier, and those with very large breasts. We suggest that commercial sex exploits men’s evolved preferences for sexually attractive women who have high reproductive potential.

Food resources are one of the important components of high quality habitat. One way to better understand the behavioral decisions made by animals to select foraging patches is focusing on the important forest stand structure characteristics. In this study we investigate the relationship between red squirrel habitat preferences, forest characteristics, i.e. distance to forest edge, canopy closure, cover of understory and undergrowth, and estimated cone biomass. We explore for the first time a methodology to predict cone biomass based on allometric equations and the extent to which this parameter affects habitat choice by red squirrels. Using tree measurements to predicted cone biomass at the plot level which is located in a given stand provides a usefulness proxy of food resources and it is not time-consuming compare with the traditional annual cone count. We selected sixty 30-by-30 m plots in mature Norway spruce forest stands where we measured percentage understory cover, percentage undergrowth cover, distance to forest edge, number of Norway spruce trees, diameter at breast height and height of each Norway spruce tree, number of other tree species and percentage of canopy closure. Within each plot, we counted all Norway spruce cones stripped by red squirrels. Results showed that both forest characteristics (i.e. distance to forest edge and canopy closure) and estimated cone biomass were significant predictors of red squirrel feeding signs on Norway spruce. Our study revealed the potential usefulness of cone biomass as a parameter to determine cone productivity of Norway spruce stands. The effects of food abundance and forest stand structure characteristics are crucial for habitat selection by red squirrels. Estimation of cone biomass based on the tree measurement can be useful for predicting potential foraging habitats for red squirrels regardless of the seed year and can be simple to use for conservation practice in order to locate potential sites for protection of this species.

Electricity pylons and power lines in an agricultural environment serve as artificial perching sites for many birds. For this reason, seeds of fleshy-fruited plant species are predominantly deposited in these places. In the present study we show that electricity pylons may play an important role in the succession of fleshy-fruited shrubs and trees in intensive farmland. The aim of the study was to evaluate the importance of electricity pylons as artificial perching sites and thus as important locations enabling earlier succession and colonisation by fleshy-fruited plant species. The study was conducted during June and July 2013 in the Wielkopolska province of western Poland in intensive farmland with numerous small isolated forest patches. In total, we found 22 fleshy-fruited and 10 dry-fruited tree and shrub species under electricity pylons, of which 30% were alien species. The density of fleshy-fruited species under pylons was significantly higher in comparison with control plots, in which 85% of tree and shrub species were alien species. Padus serotina and Sambucus nigra were the species most frequently found under pylons. Plants of non-endozoochorous origin (i.e. anemochorous Pinus sylvestris, Betula pendula) were fewer in number. As a result, the share of fleshy-fruited species was much greater than those of wind-dispersed pioneer species. This is because fleshy-fruited species are able, thanks to artificial perching sites, to appear earlier than they would under natural conditions, in which these species follow the expansion and development of pioneer anemochorous species acting as natural perching sites. The presence of the electricity pylons compensates for a lack of natural perching sites in a homogenous landscape under intensive agriculture.

In their first phase of expanding into new areas, invasive plants often take advantage of the inability of existing herbivores and pathogenic species to exploit them. However, in the longer term local enemies may adapt to using these invasive species as a food source. This study assesses the use of mature acorns of two oak species in Europe (the native Pedunculate Oak Quercus robur and the invasive Northern Red Oak Quercus rubra) by moths Cydia fagiglandana and Cydia splendana and beetles Curculio spp. We show that acorns of invasive oak species can be equally attractive to C. splendana but only partially so to C. fagiglandana where infestation rates where significantly lower (approximately half) compared to the native oak. The infestation by Curculio beetles of Northern Red Oak was marginal, less than 1% of the rate in the native oak species. The larval final weights did not differ significantly between host species, but emergence of C. splendana and Curculio spp. took significantly longer in acorns of Northern Red Oak. It is likely that C. fagiglandana and C. splendana have increased their niche breadths by exploiting invasive oak species and avoiding competition with the Curculio weevils. Furthermore, the occurrence of Northern Red Oak could stabilize food resources during years when native oak species have poor acorn crops.

Recent studies demonstrate that by focusing on traits linked to fundamental plant life-history trade-offs, ecologists can begin to predict plant community structure at global scales. Yet, consumers can strongly affect plant communities, and means for linking consumer effects to key plant traits and community assembly processes are lacking. We conducted a global literature review and meta-analysis to evaluate whether seed size, a trait representing fundamental life-history trade-offs in plant offspring investment, could predict post-dispersal seed predator effects on seed removal and plant recruitment. Seed size predicted small mammal seed removal rates and their impacts on plant recruitment consistent with optimal foraging theory, with intermediate seed sizes most strongly impacted globally - for both native and exotic plants. However, differences in seed size distributions among ecosystems conditioned seed predation patterns, with relatively large-seeded species most strongly affected in grasslands (smallest seeds), and relatively small-seeded species most strongly affected in tropical forests (largest seeds). Such size-dependent seed predation has profound implications for coexistence among plants because it may enhance or weaken opposing life-history trade-offs in an ecosystem-specific manner. Our results suggest that seed size may serve as a key life-history trait that can integrate consumer effects to improve understandings of plant coexistence.

Ecologists and wildlife managers require useful tools to reduce the human-wildlife conflict. So far, little attention has been paid to the damage caused by avian nesting on man-made structures. We weighed 145 occupied nests of the white stork (Ciconia ciconia) in eastern Poland and applied general linear models (multiple regressions) to predict a nest’s mass from its measurements. Nests measured showed large variation in size (mean ± SD = 140.9 ± 23.7 cm, range: 80–230 cm in diameter; 59.7 ± 27.8 cm, range: 10–140 cm in height) and weighted 70–1348 kg (mean ± SD: 378 ± 251 kg). We set up a free online calculator which uses model equations to estimate nest masses given nest dimensions. Apart from the management application, it can be used in ecological research, e.g. nests tracked over subsequent seasons, and even into account weather data to assess the effect of climate change.

Cities are habitats created almost exclusively for a single species, Homo sapiens. However, the mosaic-like character of urban environments may create favourable living conditions for various populations of bees. Due to the negative impact of intensified agriculture and landscape fragmentation on pollinator insects, interest in urban areas as refuges for local bee fauna is growing. The author’s three-year research has shown that the distance of a bee community from a large green space with direct connection to suburban areas is the decisive factor for bee species richness in a city. The proximity of such green space areas facilities penetration of species into cities. As for the density of bees in the urban environment, it was largely determined by host plant cover. These data are of practical importance, as they may be used in future urban green space planning.

The red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is an arboreal species, relatively common in mixed, deciduous and coniferous forests and in urban parks. From autumn to early spring the main diet of red squirrels is seeds in closed conifer cones. In this study, we investigated characteristics of a habitat in western Poland where red squirrels were feeding on Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). Understory cover, number of tree species, distance to an open area, distance to the nearest great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) anvil, and size of ten randomly selected Scots pine trees were measured on 70 transects. We used binary logistic regression to test which forest habitat parameters affected the presence of feeding signs of red squirrels. Feeding signs of red squirrels were found from sites close to forest edges with less understory cover, higher tree-species richness and larger size of trees.
