2. Microgravimetric and GPR surveys for detection of unconsolidated zones in a levee

Abstract

Selected results of complex geophysical surveys carried out on the Vistula river flood levee in Cracow are herein presented. Two complementary geophysical methods were applied for detection of potential unconsolidated zones in the body of the levee, i.e. microgravimetry and ground-penetrating radar (GPR). The surveys were carried out in 2D mode, along a profile at the crown of the flood levee. Microgravimetric data reveal anomalies showing zones of decreased bulk density. These zones provide information about poor quality of the levee. The main anomaly was interpreted in a quantitative manner using gravity modelling. Non-standard GPR processing and visualization of radargrams were employed to better extract information concerning the distribution of unconsolidated zones. High resolution GPR surveys allow to outline such zones which was the basis for construction of the 2D model used in the gravimetric modelling. Integration of these two geophysical methods provided important information about the spatial variations of mass density in several unconsolidated zones within the body of the flood levee.

Abstract

In the region of Siesławice (near Busko-Zdrój, Poland) there are unique phenomena of gypsum karst. Atmospheric factors caused numerous gypsum outcrops, canals and underground voids. The article presents the possibility of using non-invasive gravimetric surveys supplemented with geodetic measurements to illustrate karst changes occurring around the void. The use of modern geodetic measurement techniques including terrestrial and airborne laser scanning enables to generate a digital terrain model and a three-dimensional model of voids. Gravimetric field studies allowed to map the anomalies of the gravitational field of the near-surface zone. Geodetic measurement results have made it possible to accurately determine the terrain correction that supplemented the gravimetric anomaly information. Geophysical interpretation indicate the presence of weathered rocks in the near surface zone and fractures and loosened zones located surround the karst cave.

Abstract

Archaeological work was undertaken to save the archaeological site. Originally the site was described as settlement from the period of Lusatian Culture. But during the first archaeological excavations, a vast and rich burial ground of Lusatian Culture people was discovered. Burials were located at different depths, often above one another. In order to determine precise location of the archeological objects the geophysical survey was used. Due to the fact of burial cremation, which means treated with fire, as a suitable geophysical method selected for the magnetic method. The size of magnetic anomalies depends on the magnetic susceptibility of the objects. Magnetic field investigation were performed on the area of 50x100 m. in two directions, using vertical gradient method. At the processing stage, the distributions were created for each of the probes and for each direction of the profile. The distributions of the data collected by the lower probe show many separated anomalous zones of limited area. They are associated with the occurrence of regions where magnetized objects are located, such as in the case of the remains of cremation graves. The measurement with two probes allowed for the calculation of the vertical gradient of the magnetic field, while vertical gradient distributions allowed for determination of the likely location of individual graves in the anomalous zones the and for their initial categorization.
