Abstract

Removal of contaminants and top polymer layer from the surface of carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites is critical for high-quality adhesive-joining with direct bonding to the reinforcing fiber constituents. Surface treatment with a laser beam provides selective removal of the polymer matrix without damaging the fibers and increasing the wettability. However, inhomogeneous thermal properties of CFRP make control of laser ablation difficult as the laser energy absorbed by the carbon fibers is converted into heat and transmitted through the fiber structures during the laser operation. In this study, the effect of scanning speed and laser power on nanosecond laser surface treatment was characterized by scanning electron microscope images and wetting angle measurements. Low scanning speeds allowed laser energy to be conducted as thermal energy through the fibers, which resulted in less epoxy matrix removal and substantial thermal damage. Low laser power partially degraded the epoxy the surface while the high power damaged the carbon fibers. For the studied CFRP specimens consisting of unidirectional [45/0/−45/90]2s stacking of carbon/epoxy prepregs (HexPly®-M91), 100 mJ/mm2 generated by 10 m/s scanning speed and 30 W power appeared as optimum processing parameters for the complete removal of epoxy matrix from the top surface with mostly undamaged carbon fibers and super hydrophilic surface condition. Abstract

Günümüz havacılık sektöründe kompozit malzemeler sahip oldukları yüksek özgül modül ve özgül mukavemet özellikleri sayesinde hava araçları yapılarında kullanımı en yüksek orana sahip malzemelerdir. Kompozit malzemelerin sağladıkları avantajları yanında imalat ve montajında da çeşitli dezavantajlara sahiptir. Kompozit malzemelerin montajı mekanik bağlayıcı veya yapıştırma ile gerçekleştirilmektedir. Mekanik bağlayıcıların kullanımında kompozit malzemeye delik açılarak süreksizlik yaratması, bağlayıcıların neden olduğu ek ağırlık gibi dezavantajları, kompozit malzemelerin yapıştırma ile birleştirilmesi üzerine yapılan çalışma sayısının artmasını sağlamıştır. Yapıştırma bağlantılarının mekanik birleştirmeye göre avantajları olmasına rağmen yapışma kalitesini etkileyen birçok parametre olması, birleştirme işlemini mekanik birleştirmeye göre daha karmaşık hale getirmiştir. Bu tez çalışmasında da bu parametrelerin yapışma kalitesine etkisi kapsamlı bir şekilde incelenmiş, tasarımcı ve araştırmacılara rehber olacak nitelikte bir çalışma yapılmıştır. In today's aviation, composite materials are the materials with the highest rate of use in aircraft structures thanks to their high specific modulus and specific strength properties. Besides the advantages of composite materials, they have various disadvantages in manufacturing and assembly. Composite materials are assembled by mechanical fastening or adhesive bonding. In the use of mechanical fasteners, the disadvantages such as creating a discontinuity by punching the composite material, the additional weight caused by the fasteners, increased the number of researches on the bonding of composite materials with adhesives. Although bonding joints have advantages over mechanical fastening, there are many parameters affecting the adhesion quality, making the joining process more complicated than mechanical fastening. In this study, the effects of these parameters on the quality of adhesion were examined extensively and a study was conducted to guide the designers and researchers. 113
