This study was conducted between January 2006 and September 2008 to identify Babesia and Theileria species in sheep and goats in Central Anatolia via reverse line blotting (RLB). In total, 421 sheep and 152 goats were randomly selected from herds located in Kayseri, Yozgat, and Sivas provinces (all in central Turkey). The amplified hypervariable V4 region of the 18S rRNA gene of ovine piroplasm species, including Theileria lestoquardi, T. ovis, Babesia ovis, B. motasi, and B. crassa, was hybridized against species-specific probes. Theileria ovis and B. ovis were observed in the study animals. Among the 573 small ruminants included in the study, 182 (43.2%) of 421 sheep and 18 (11.8%) of 152 goats, (in total 200 [34.9%]) were catch-all positive based on RLB. Among the sheep, T. ovis was observed in 170 (40.4%), B. ovis in 5 (1.2%), and B. ovis + T. ovis in 7 (1.7%). Theileria ovis, B. ovis, and B. ovis + T. ovis were observed in 15 (9.9%), in 1 (0.7%), and in 2 (1.3%) of the examined goats, respectively. As a result, the molecular prevalence of B. ovis was as follows: 2.9% in sheep (12/421), 2% in goats (3/152), and 2.6% in the total study population (15/573), versus 42% in sheep (177/421), 11.2% in goats (17/152), and 33.9% in the total population (194/573) for T. ovis. A total of 554 cattle from the Cappadocia region were divided into 5 different groups according to vaccination and were examined for Theileria annulata by microscope and indirect fluorescence antibody test (IFAT). The sampled cattle were checked for tick infestation. The prevalence of T. annulata was 60.5% by microscopic examination and 67.5% by IFAT. According to the microscopic examination, the prevalence of T. annulata was significantly (P < 0.001) higher in the unvaccinated group. The seropositivity according to IFAT was significantly (P < 0.001) lower in the unvaccinated group. The morbidity was significantly (P < 0.001) higher in the unvaccinated, semi-grazed, pure breed, and >2 years age groups. The mortality was significantly higher in the unvaccinated (P < 0.001), semi-grazed (P < 0.05), pure breed (P < 0.05), and female (P < 0.001) groups. A total of 1585 tick specimens belonging to the genera Hyalomma, Rhipicephalus, Dermacentor, Boophilus, and Ornithodorus were detected in 21.48% of examined cattle. The developing forms of T. annulata were determined in the H. anatolicum anatolicum ticks microscopically. Out of 554 cattle, 156 (27.61%) were diagnosed with acute tropical theileriosis. This study was carried out to detect and compare the prevalence of bovine Theileria and Babesia species in the vicinity of Kayseri by microscopic examinations (ME) and reverse line blotting (RLB). A total of 337 cattle usually grazed on pasture in 13 different regions of Kayseri were sampled randomly. Blood samples were collected into tubes containing EDTA from jugular veins. Thin blood smears were prepared from ear capillaries. On microscopic examination of smears, 51 (15.1%) were positive for piroplasms. In the RLB assay, 61 (18.1%) were positive for T. annulata and 3 (0.9%) for T. buffeli/orientalis. Two (0.6%) of the animals were infected with B. bigemina and also had a concurrent infection of T. annulata. No animals were positive for B. bovis or B. divergens. The current knowledge on the louse fauna of birds and mammals in Turkey has not yet been completed. Up to the present, a total of 109 species belonging to 50 genera of lice have been recorded from animals and humans, according to the morphological identification. Among the avian lice, a total of 43 species belonging to 22 genera were identified in Ischnocera (Philopteridae). 35 species belonging to 14 genera in Menoponidae were detected and only 1 species was found in Laemobothriidae in Amblycera. Among the mammalian lice, a total of 20 species belonging to 8 genera were identified in Anoplura. 8 species belonging to 3 genera in Ischnocera were determined and 2 species belonging to 2 genera were detected in Amblycera in the mammalian lice.

Objective: This study was performed on 70 injured wild birds belonging to 7 different species in the Cappadocia region between 2005 and 2009. All birds were inspected for ectoparasites and 29 of 70 (41.4%) birds were found to be infested by at least one chewing louse species., Methods: All lice were cleared in 10% KOH, mounted in Canada balsam on slides and identified under a light microscope., Results: The lice were identified as Laemobothrion maximum, Craspedorrhynchus platystomus, Degeeriella fulva and Colpocephalum nanum from the long-legged buzzards (Buteo rufinus), as C. platystomus, L. maximum, D. fulva and C. nanum from the common buzzards (Buteo buteo), as D. fulva and Colpocephalum sp. from the honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus), as Colpocephalum milvi and L. maximum from the black kites (Milvus migrans), as Strigiphilus barbatus from the long-eared owl (Asio otus), as Comatomenapon elongatum from the great egret (Egretta alba) and as Colpocephalum zebra from the white stork (Ciconia ciconia)., Conclusion: Honey buzzard was found as a new host for Degeeriella fulva and Colpocephalum sp. and these lice were recorded for the first time in this study. Colpocephalum milvi from the black kite and Comatomenapon elongatum from the great egret have been reported for the first time with this study in Turkey.

This study was designed to determine the potential vectors of Dirofilaria immitis by molecular techniques in Felahiye district of Kayseri. Mosquitoes were sampled from 11 points between June-August 2008 and collected live samples were brought to laboratory. In order to allow the larval development, mosquitoes were incubated in in vitro conditions for seven days. After this mosquitoes were killed and species identifications were done. Among the totally collected 301 mosquitoes, 96 (31.9%) were belonging to Aedes vexans and 205 (68.1%) to Culex pipiens. Head-thorax and abdomens of each sample were dissected to determine the infective and infected mosquitoes and totally 54 pools (2-17 sample/pool) were constituted according to species and collected region. Genomic DNA was extracted from pools and analyzed by PCR using species specific primers. Dirofilaria immitis DNA was found in 2/54 of the pools formed with one head-thorax and one abdomen pool of Ae. vexans. The minimum infection rate (MIRs) was calculated as 0.33 % in the study area. MIRs of 20 pools consisted from Ae. vexans was determined as 1.04 %. No filarial DNA was detected in 34 pools consisted from Cx. pipiens. Consequently, Ae. vexans was the active potential vector of D. immitis in the study area.
