INTRODUCTION: Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare but aggressive form of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma characterized by excessive expression of cyclin D1. Intracellular signaling enzyme Rho-kinase (ROCK) can contribute to cellular migration, proliferation, and differentiation, as well as tumor development and metastasis. However, ROCK gene and protein expressions or polymorphisms have never been investigated in MCL patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of ROCK gene and protein expressions in MCL patients. We also examined ROCK2 gene polymorphisms in this study. METHODS: A total of 60 patients with MCL and 60 healthy controls were included in this retrospective study. Hematoxylin and eosin-stained lymph node tissue slides in the entire archive were reevaluated and used for immunohistochemistry, gene expression, and polymerase chain reaction studies. RESULTS: In immunohistochemical studies, there were significant increases in ROCK1 (p=0.0009) and ROCK2 (p

Granulocytic sarcomas are rare tumors composed of neoplastic blood cells, typically occurring during the course of acute nonlymphoblastic leukemia or before its onset. We present a case of a 23-year-old young adult man with metachronous granulocytic sarcoma of the testis without hematologic manifestations who was diagnosed with granulocytic sarcoma (GS). The patient was treated with right orchiectomy but relapsed with a left testicular mass 16 months later when a left orchiectomy was performed. The patient has been free of disease for 13 months following the left orchiectomy. This case highlights a rare hematologic cancer that urologists and pathologists should be aware of since it can present as a testicular mass. Only 3 cases of testicular GS without an associated hematologic disorder have been described. To the best of our knowledge, our patient is the first reported case in the English literature of metachronous GS of the testis with no evidence of hematologic disorder.

Medicine - Abstract
Radiotherapy and concomitant/adjuvant therapy with temozolomide are a common treatment regimen for children and adults with high-grade glioma. Although temozolomide is generally safe, it can rarely cause life-threatening complications. Here we report a case of a 31-year-old female patient who underwent surgical resection followed by radiotherapy plus concomitant temozolomide. She developed pancytopenia after adjuvant treatment with temozolomide. A bone marrow aspiration and biopsy showed hypocellularity with very few erythroid and myeloid cells, consistent with aplastic anemia. In the English literature, aplastic anemia due to temozolomide is extremely rare.

- Abstract
Diabetic nephropathy is increasing in frequency and is one of the most important causes of end-stage renal disease. In this study, the effect of Bongardia chrysogonum on kidneys by induced diabetic nephropathy in a diabetic rat model induced by streptozotocin (STZ) was investigated. Forty male Wistar Albino rats were used in the study. Rats; They were divided into 4 groups as the control group (K), the group given B. chrysogonum (B), the group with diabetes (DM) and the group given B. chrysogonum for treatment after diabetes was established (DMB). 45 mg/kg STZ was given intravenously to the DM and DMB groups. One day later, the blood sugar levels of the rats were checked with a glucometer, and values above 300 mg/dl were accepted as diabetes. B. chrysogonum infusion prepared by weighing 3 grams every day for 5 weeks was given to the B and DMB groups by gavage. Their weights and blood sugar levels were measured and recorded every week. At the end of 5 weeks, it was observed that the blood sugar level of the DMB group decreased statistically significantly compared to the DM group. Then, the rats were sacrificed under deep anesthesia and their kidneys were removed. As a result of histopathological examination, glomerular basement membrane thickening and mesangial cell increase were observed in the kidneys of the DM group. Similar histopathological findings were observed in the kidneys of DMB group rats and K group kidneys. These results were supported by Periodic acid Schiff and reticular staining. As a result of this study, it was observed that B. chrysogonum lowered blood sugar level after diabetes and reduced kidney damage. The mechanism by which B. chrysogonum regulates blood sugar in diabetic rats and affects commonly occurring secondary injuries should be investigated in detail.

Percutaneous closure of secundum atrial septal defects (ASD) has become an important alternative treatment to surgery. We evaluated our clinical experience with, and short-term results of transcatheter closure of ASDs with the Amplatzer septal occluder in adult patients. The study included 52 patients (36 women, 16 men; mean age 33±14 years; range 14 to 69 years) who underwent transcatheter ASD closure with the Amplatzer occluder device. The mean ASD diameter measured by transesophageal echocardiography was 19.5±5.7 mm and the mean device diameter was 24.5±5.7 mm. All the patients were assessed clinically and echocardiographically one month after the procedure.Transcatheter ASD closure was successfully performed in 48 patients (92.3%) and failed in four patients (7.7%). Echocardiographic controls showed significant decreases in tricuspid regurgitation, right ventricular dilatation, and pulmonary artery pressure (p=0.003, p=0.026, and p=0.0001, respectively). Functional capacity of the patients also showed significant improvements (p=0.0001). After implantation, residual shunts were detected in four patients, all of which disappeared one month after the procedure. Major complications were seen in two patients. One patient developed ventricular fibrillation immediately after the procedure due to device embolization. One patient with left ventricular dysfunction developed device thrombosis due to cessation of dual antiplatelet therapy, which was successfully treated by anticoagulation therapy. Arrhythmia was not observed in any patient.Percutaneous closure of secundum ASDs with the Amplatzer occluder device is a safe and effective procedure with a high success rate.

Abstract The corrosion inhibition behavior of sodium nitrite (NaNO2) towards pure copper (99.95%) in simulated cooling water (SCW) was investigated by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and dynamic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (DEIS). NaNO2 interferes with metal dissolution and reduce the corrosion rate through the formation or maintenance of inhibitive film on the metal surface. Surface morphologies illustrated that the surface homogeneity increased on adding sodium nitrite. Sodium nitrite’s adsorption on copper surface followed the modified form of Langmuir, Freundlich and Frumkin isotherms. Physiosorption mode was involved in the corrosion protection. Electrochemical results revealed an corrosion resistance of copper increases on increasing the inhibitor concentration. The DEIS results indicated that copper corrosion mechanism could be hindered by 50% even after interval of 24 h by optimum concentration of sodium nitrite. The maximum inhibition was achieved with 2000 ppm of NaNO2. With this concentration, inhibition efficiency of up to 61.8% was achievable.

AbstractBackground: The aim of this study was to detect cysteinyl leukotriene (Cys-LT) receptors in aspirin-sensitive nasal polyposis patients, and compare them with nasal polyposis and chronic rhinosinusitis patients without aspirin sensitivity. Methods: The formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue blocks of a total of 52 patients undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery were reviewed by an experienced head and neck pathologist. Of these 52 cases, there were 22 nasal polyposis cases with aspirin sensitivity, 15 nasal polyposis cases without aspirin sensitivity and 15 chronic rhinosinusitis cases without aspirin sensitivity. Immunohistochemical analyses for Cys-LT1 receptors were performed with polyclonal rabbit antibody. Results: Eosinophil receptor intensity levels were 27.68, 21.67, and 14.40, respectively. This was statistically insignificant (p <0.089). Mast cell receptor intensity levels were 8.41, 5.27, and 4.27, respectively. In the aspirin-sensitive group, mast cell receptor intensity was significantly higher when compared to the nasal polyposis and chronic rhinosinusitis group (p < 0.0001 and p < 0.0001, respectively). The difference in Cys-LT1 receptor immunoreactivity in both eosinophils and mast cells among the 3 groups was also found to be statistically significant (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our study revealed that nasal polyps of aspirin-sensitive patients were infiltrated with eosinophils and mast cells, Cys-LT1 receptor proportions in these inflammatory cells were found to be higher and Cys-LT1 receptor immunoreactivity in eosinophils and mast cells was increased.Copyright © 2007 S. Objective: Although numerous studies have shown the protective effects of the well-developed coronary collaterals on left ventricular functions, the relationship between collateral grade and left ventricular end diastolic pressure has not been studied in chronic total occlusion patients. Also, there are conflicting data on the effect of collaterals on NT-proBNP levels. The aim of our study was to evaluate the relationship between coronary collateral circulation and left ventricular end diastolic pressure and NT-proBNP levels in chronic total occlusion patients. Methods: Study group was retrospectively selected from the patients who had undergone coronary angiography at our hospital between June 2011 and March 2013. Clinical, biochemical, angiographic and hemodynamic data of 199 consecutive patients having at least one totally occluded major epicardial coronary artery were evaluated. Coronary collateral circulation was graded according to Rentrop classification. While Rentrop grade 3 was defined as well-developed, all the remaining collateral grades were regarded as poor collaterals. Results: Overall 87 patients were found to have good collaterals and 112 patients had poor collaterals. There was no significant difference between the patients with well- or poorly developed coronary collaterals with regard to left ventricular end diastolic pressure (16.84 ± 5.40 mmHg vs 16.10 ± 6.09, respectively, p = 0,632) and logNT-proBNP (2.46 ± 0.58 vs 2.59 ± 0.76, respectively, p = 0,335). Conclusion: In patients with coronary chronic total occlusion even well-developed coronary collaterals are not capable of protecting the rise of left ventricular end diastolic pressure and NT-proBNP levels which are reliable markers of the left ventricular dysfunction.

Background. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate adult-child caregiver burden in heart failure (HF) patients. Secondary purpose of the study was to identify the possible influencing factors for caregiver burden and depressive symptoms in a young adult-child caregiver group. Methods. A total of 138 adult-child caregivers and 138 patients with HF participated in this study. Caregivers’ burden, depressive symptoms, and anxiety levels were assessed by using Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale (ZCBS), Beck Depression Inventory, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, respectively. Results. The mean ZCBS scores of the female caregivers were significantly higher than male caregivers. Approximately one-third of the adult-child caregivers had at least mild depressive symptoms. Caregivers with higher depressive symptoms had higher levels of caregiver burden. There were positive correlations between caregiving time, severity of depressive symptoms, and perceived caregiver burden. There was a negative correlation between education level of caregivers and perceived caregiver burden. Age, socioeconomic level, and marital status of patients were affecting factors for depressive symptoms in caregivers. Among caregiver characteristics, gender, marital status, and ZCBS scores seem to influence the depression in caregivers. Conclusions. The study findings suggest significant levels of burden and depressive symptoms even in adult-child caregivers of HF patients.

The global health crisis, COVID-19, swiftly enveloped people all around the world. Upon the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 as a pandemic, numerous countries have determined their own road maps. The main purpose of this study was to understand the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the life balance of parents with children aged 0-6 years in Türkiye. This study was a cross-sectional design. The data was collected from 514 parents who have at least one child at the age of 6 or less. Results showed that there were several direct and indirect relationships between demographic measures (gender, age, educational status, number of children in home and employment status of parents), mediating variables (self-rated measures such as support from distance learning, support from others), and endogenous variables (life balance variables). The findings of the study showed that “new normal” has entailed potential job losses for some individuals and changed perspectives and delivery methods of education. The findings also highlighted the importance of parents’ engagement into education for understanding and helping children’s development.

AbstractBackground:Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are inflammatory markers used as prognostic factors in various diseases. The aims of this study were to compare the PLR and the NLR of heart failure (HF) patients with those of age-sex matched controls, to evaluate the predictive value of those markers in detecting HF, and to demonstrate the effect of NLR and PLR on mortality in HF patients during follow-up.Methods:This study included 56 HF patients and 40 controls without HF. All subjects underwent transthoracic echocardiography to evaluate cardiac functions. The NLR and the PLR were calculated as the ratio of neutrophil count to lymphocyte count and as the ratio of platelet count to lymphocyte count, respectively. All HF patients were followed after their discharge from the hospital to evaluate mortality, cerebrovascular events, and re-hospitalization.Results:The NLR and the PLR of HF patients were significantly higher compared to those of the controls (p < 0.01). There was an inverse correlation between the NLR and the left ventricular ejection fraction of the study population (r: -0.409, p < 0.001). The best cut-off value of NLR to predict HF was 3.0, with 86.3% sensitivity and 77.5% specificity, and the best cut-off value of PLR to predict HF was 137.3, with 70% sensitivity and 60% specificity. Only NLR was an independent predictor of mortality in HF patients. A cut-off value of 5.1 for NLR can predict death in HF patients with 75% sensitivity and 62% specificity during a 12.8-month follow-up period on average. Conclusion:NLR and PLR were higher in HF patients than in age-sex matched controls. However, NLR and PLR were not sufficient to establish a diagnosis of HF. NLR can be used to predict mortality during the follow-up of HF patients.

The current study shows applications of both classical test theory (CTT) and item response theory (IRT) to psychology data. The study discusses item level analyses of General Mattering Scale produced by two theories as well as strengths and weaknesses of both measurement approaches. The survey consisted of a total of five Likert-type items. Each student chose the best answers from the given categories (e.g., not at all, a little, somewhat, very much). We specifically run generalized partial credit IRT model. Overall, we discussed that while CTT provides comparatively superficial information but, IRT allows gaining deeper insight into the test items and response categories. We concluded that the meaning of item properties differ in CTT and IRT, and this difference may lead to different interpretations. We aimed to encourage psychologists and counsellors to give more consideration to the IRT applications when assessing the psychometric features of the items.
