Özellikle de RUY100, RUY200 ve RUY400 gruplarında abdominal yağ, karaciğer, bursa fabricius ve total ince bağırsak ağırlıkları önemli derecede artmıştır (P, The aim of this study is to reveal the effect of the addition of the capsulated fennel seed (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) essential oil (RUY) into the mixed feeds on the growth performance of broilers, small intestine microflora and morphology, and to examine the genetic and molecular mechanisms in these biological processes over small intestine transcriptomic profiling by using nutrigenomic technologies. In the study, a total of 400 1-day-old male chicks of the Ross-308 genotype were randomly distributed into 5 groups, with 16 replications in each group. The experiment included a control group fed with standard feed containing no feed additives and broiler groups fed with the addition of 50 mg (RUY50), 100 mg (RUY100), 200 mg (RUY200) or 400 mg (RUY400) capsulated RUY per 1 kg standard feed. The research continued for 6 weeks according to the randomized plot trial design. When the obtained performance parameters were evaluated, it was determined that the body weights (BW) and European production efficiency factor (EPEF) values tended to increase in the RUY50 group, while the RUY100, RUY200 and RUY400 groups were similar and significantly increased compared to the control group (P0.05), and that feed conversion rates (FCR) improved at all RUY levels (P0.05). RUY was observed to decrease the mortality rate numerically. It was found that hot carcass yield and breast muscle weights increased parallel to the increase in RUY levels. Particularly abdominal fat, liver, bursa of fabricius and total small intestine weights increased significantly in the RUY100, RUY200 and RUY400 groups (P

The plant cell wall consists of a complicated lignocellulosic complex comprising cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. Polysaccharide components in lignocellulases constitute intensively packed microfibers in lignin layers. Lignin as far protects these components against hydrolytic enzymes and other external factors. However, lignin must be removed from lignocellulosic biomass in order to use these polysaccharide fibers as energy sources. Indeed some edible fungi species are known among the most effecient lignin degraders. In this study, it was aimed to determine that the Lcc1 mRNA expression levels and laccase enzyme activities of some edible fungi such as Trametes versicolor (turkey tail), Pleurotus ostreatus (oyster mushroom), Morchella esculenta (morel), Ganoderma lucidum (reishi) and Lentinula edodes (shiitake). The mRNA expression of the Lcc1 genes was determined by Real Time-PCR in the gill, cap, stem and all tissues of fungi. According to the results, the expression of Lcc1 gene in all fungal tissues was 8.63 in T. versicolor, 7.03 in P. ostreatus, 2.31 in M. esculenta, 8.79 in G. lucidum and 9.31 in L. edodes. Mycotoxins are small and quite stable molecules which are extremely difficult to remove or eradicate, and which areconsidered to be a great threat both for human and animal health in global terms. Especially in farm animals, mycotoxins can cause decreased performance, reducing in feed consumption, weakening of immunity system, reproductive disorders, diminished body weight gain and residues on food products of animal origin. The mycotoxinsof major concern as feed contaminants that are potentially removable from feed are mainly aflatoxins, ochratoxin A,zearalenone, deoxynivalenol, T-2 and fumonisins. One of the methods for reducing the exposure to mycotoxins is toreduce their absorption and bioavailability by using various mycotoxin binders. The most widely known of these arealuminosilicates like clay, bentonite, montmorillonite, zeolite, aqueus sodium calcium aluminosilicate (HSCAS) andactive carbons. Another method is the degradation of mycotoxins into non-toxic metabolites by using indigestablecomplex carbonhydrates (bacterium and yeast cell walls), enzyme, vitamin, amino-acid and synthetic polymers likecholestralamine, polivinil-polipirrolidon polymers (PVPP). The purpose of this review is to identify the benefits andrisky aspects of using toxin binders in animal nutrition and to give some idea about the future of this practice.

- Abstract
Global antimicrobial resistance has led to a ban on the use of antibiotics as growth promoters (AGPs) in poultry farming, encouraging the use of natural phytogenic feed additives that provide similar effects to AGPs without causing resistance. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of the addition of encapsulated fennel seed (Foeniculum vulgareMill.) essential oil (FEO) into the diets on the performance, intestinal microflora, morphology, and transcriptomic profiling of broiler chickens. In the study, 400 one-d-old male chicks of the Ross-308 genotype were randomly distributed into five groups, each with 16 replicates of five birds. The experiment included a control group fed on basal diets without the addition of FEO and treatment groups supplemented with 50 (FEO50), 100 (FEO100), 200 (FEO200), or 400 (FEO400) mg of encapsulated FEO/kg. Body weight and the European Production Efficiency Factor values were higher in the FEO100, FEO200, and FEO400 groups (P< 0.05). The feed conversion ratio significantly improved at all FEO levels (P< 0.05). FEO supplementation improved duodenum, jejunum, and ileum morphologies. It enhanced mucosal layer thickness in the duodenum and jejunum, and muscular layer thickness in the jejunum and ileum (P< 0.05). It also increased the number of Lactobacillusspp. in the jejunum and ileum (P< 0.05). According to the transcriptome profile obtained from the microarray analysis of samples taken from small intestine tissues, the mRNA expression levels of 261 genes in the FEO50 group (206 upregulated and 55 downregulated), 302 genes in the FEO100 group (218 upregulated and 84 downregulated), 292 genes in the FEO200 group (231 upregulated and 61 downregulated), and 348 genes in the FEO400 group (268 upregulated and 80 downregulated) changed compared to the control group. Most upregulated genes were associated with catalytic activity, binding, transcription regulators and transcription factors, anatomical structure and cellular development, and protein binding activity modulators. The downregulated genes mostly belonged to the transporter, carrier, and protein-modifying enzyme classes. Besides, the anti-inflammatory IL-10 gene (4.41-fold) increased significantly in the FEO100 group compared to the control group (P< 0.05). In conclusion, FEO improved the performance of broiler chickens by regulating biological processes such as performance and intestinal health, with the 100 mg FEO/kg supplementation being the most prominent. The optimal level of 100 mg encapsulated fennel seed essential oil per kilogram of diet significantly boosted growth, gut health, and transcriptomic responses in broiler chickens. The long-term use of low-level antibiotics in the poultry industry to promote growth, rather than for treatment, has led to the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a significant risk to human and animal health. This concern has led to a ban on antibiotics as growth promoters (AGPs) in broiler diets, resulting in an increase in metabolic diseases in broiler chickens. Phytogenic feed additives have been tested as alternatives to compensate for the loss of AGPs. One such additive, fennel seed essential oil (FEO), known for its strong antimicrobial properties, was examined in this study for its impact on broiler growth performance and the underlying genetic and molecular mechanisms. The results showed that FEO enhanced feed conversion efficiency, thereby improving broiler performance. It positively affected the intestinal wall structure and function and helped establish a balanced microbiota by suppressing harmful and supporting beneficial microorganisms. Transcriptome datasets revealed that FEO modulated gene expression related to economically important traits such as performance and intestinal health. In conclusion, considering the urgent need for antibiotic-free production systems owing to escalating AMR and the growing interest in genotype-specific feeding in the postgenomic era, FEO may be a promising, natural, safe, and effective alternative to AGPs.

The aim of this study was to reveal the effect of whey powder (WP) supplementation on chemical composition, silage fermentation, in vivo digestibility and net energy lactation (NEL) value of high dry matter (DM) alfalfa silage (Haylage). Alfalfa treated with different doses WP (0, 2, and 4%) were ensiled in plastic cans for 60 days. Nine Kıvırcık rams were used to estimated digestibilities of haylages in 3x3 Latin Square design with fifteen days experimental period. According to the results, the addition of WP significantly increased the DM of alfalfa haylage compared to the control whereas decreased ether extract, crude protein and crude ash. But, cell wall fraction rates of all groups were similar. Relative feed value and physical characteristics other than color improved in WP supplemented groups, and lactic acid rates increased in these groups. In terms of silo acids, the best values were found in the group with 4% WP. On the other hand, the addition of WP increased the organic matter digestibility of haylages, however the effect on other in vivo digestibility of crude protein, crude fiber, nitrogen free extract and neutral detergent fiber was insignificant. Moreover, total digestible nutrients (TDN) and NEL values of haylages were found to be improved with the addition of WP. As a result, it was concluded that in order to obtain quality haylage in the ensiling of high DM and long chopped alfalfa, WP generally can be used as an alternative source of carbohydrates and a 4% whey powder dose can be recommended in the production of haylage especially in the sense of improving silage fermentation.

The study aimed to evaluate the potential use of dried or ensiled paulownia (Paulownia spp.) leaves as roughage source for ruminants. Paulownia tree leaves were collected from one-year-old hybrid (C-125, CAR, and TF-33 clones) trees. Dried paulownia leaves of the clones were different in dry matter (DM), crude ash (CA), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), crude fiber (CF), and nitrogen-free extract (NfE) and similar in neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), and acid detergent lignin (ADL); however, these values (except EE and ADL) of ensiled leaves were significantly different among the clones. Mean CP, CA, and condensed tannin contents in dried leaves were 15.36, 9.21, and 1.75%, respectively; NDF, ADF, and ADL contents were 38.35, 35.49, and 12.08%, respectively. Mean total volatile fatty acids, in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD), and metabolizable energy (ME) value in dried leaves were 95.26 mmol/L, 76.34%, and 10.77 MJ/kg, respectively, whereas, CO2 and CH4 production were 54.66 and 29.78 mmol/L, respectively. Buffering capacity and water-soluble carbohydrates varied among the pre-ensiled paulownia leaves, although their means were 395.66 mEq/kg DM and 86.63 g/kg DM, respectively. In ensiled leaves, the pH, lactic acid ratio, and acetic acid ratio were 4.98, 11.23, and 2.56%, respectively, and butyric acid was not detected in any of the silages. Mean values of IVOMD and ME in ensiled leaves were 72.30% and 9.93 MJ/kg, respectively. Dried paulownia leaves are a high-quality alternative forage and the ensiled form is of medium quality. Therefore, paulownia leaves could be used as an alternative roughage source for ruminants., TUBITAK-1002 Short Term R&D Funding Program [118O461], This study was supported by the TUBITAK-1002 Short Term R&D Funding Program (project number 118O461). This study investigated dietary supplementation of weaned lambs with Origanum vulgare essential oil and Capsicum oleoresin (chilli pepper) extract. Thirty-six eight-week-old male and female Menemen lambs were used in this study. Three dietary treatment groups consisted of T1, an unsupplemented control group; T2, a group supplemented with 300 mg/kg oregano essential oil, and T3, a group supplemented with 300 mg/kg Capsicum oleoresin. Feed and fresh water were available to the lambs ad libitum during the 56-day experiment. No significant effects of treatment were detected on growth rate, feed intake and feed conversion. In addition, serum urea, creatine, total protein, albumin, amylase, aspartate amino transferase (AST), alanine amino transferase (ALT), and gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) levels did not differ among treatments on day 56 of the study. When oregano oil and capsicum extract were added to the feed, total volatile fatty acids (TVFA), acetate (AA), propionate (PA), butyrate (BA), isobutyrate (IBA), valerate (VA), and AA to PA ratio in the rumen were decreased significantly in comparison with the control group at two hours after feeding, with the effect of T2 being greater than that of T3. Female lambs had lower levels of TVFA than male lambs. Thus, although neither additive affected fattening performance and serum constituents of the lambs, both altered the rumen fatty acid profile., Ege University Scientific Research Projects Directorate [2016-ZRF-070], This study was supported by Ege University Scientific Research Projects Directorate under Grant 2016-ZRF-070.

- Abstract
Fennel seed (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) essential oil (FEO), which is rich in the phytoestrogenic compound trans-anethole, interacts with oestrogen receptors and influences molecular targets within cells and hormonal responses. This study examined the effect of dietary encapsulated FEO inclusion levels on performance, reproductive hormone profiles, and gene expression in laying hens during the early and late phases. The study was conducted in two independent trials, each involving 210 Atak-S laying hens that were randomly distributed into 3 experimental groups, each having 10 replicates with 7 hens. The dietary treatments included a basal diet without FEO (Control) and a basal diet supplemented with 175 (FEO175) or 350 mg (FEO350) of encapsulated FEO/kg for 12 weeks. The results showed that FEO350 treatment improved egg production, egg mass, and feed conversion ratio during both early and late phases (p < 0.05). Moreover, increasing FEO inclusion levels enhanced oestradiol, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone and progesterone concentrations in both early and late laying hens, reaching peak levels at FEO350 (p < 0.05). FEO supplementation upregulated the expression of oestrogen receptor 2 (ESR2) and follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR) (p < 0.05). Furthermore, FEO350 increased prolactin receptor (PRLR) expression during the early phase but decreased it during the late laying phase (p < 0.05). Positive correlations were observed between egg production and FSHR, ESR2 and steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (STAR) expression, with a negative correlation for PRLR (p < 0.05). In conclusion, 350 mg FEO/kg was found to be the most effective level for enhancing layer performance., (© 2024 The Author(s). Veterinary Medicine and Science published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)
