PURPOSE: This study was conducted to evaluate visual function and changes in the central macular thickness of patients with unresponsive neovascular age-related macular degeneration who were switched from ranibizumab (Lucentis®) to aflibercept (Eylea®) treatment at 30 months. METHODS: This retrospective study examined patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration who were switched to aflibercept after ≥6 previous intravitreal ranibizumab injections at 4- to 8-week intervals. All patients were switched to intravitreal aflibercept (2.0 mg) and analyzed after 3 consecutive injections followed by a prore nata dosing regimen and after 30 months of treatment. Best corrected visual acuity, biomicroscopic examination, intraocular pressure, fundus examination, and central macular thickness were recorded at the start of treatment, before the transition to intravitreal aflibercept treatment, and at 6, 12, 18, 24, and 30 months of intravitreal aflibercept treatment. RESULTS: A total of 33 eyes met the inclusion criteria. The median age of the patients was 73.57 ± 7.98 years, and 21 (61.8%) patients were males and 12 (35.3%) were females. Before the transition, the patients received a mean of 16.8 ± 8.8 ranibizumab injections (range 6-38).After the transition to intravitreal aflibercept treatment, the mean number of aflibercept injections was 9.09 ± 3.94. No significant differences were observed in best corrected visual acuity after the aflibercept switch in any of the months. Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy and is one of the leading causes of irreversible vision loss worldwide. There are studies on the role of vascular dysfunction in the pathogenesis of glaucoma. Evaluation of intraocular blood flow will be useful in elucidating the pathogenesis. Various techniques are available for the diagnosis and follow-up of patients with glaucoma. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) has emerged as a new technology to detect the vascular effects of the glaucoma. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a new technology and many publications have been made in the field of glaucoma. In this article, we aimed to review the studies conducted on the role of OCTA technology in glaucoma and to draw attention to how OCTA can be helpful for diagnosis of glaucoma and follow-up of patients with glaucoma. Whole literature through by PubMed for the keywords of optical coherence tomography angiography and glaucoma were scanned. This review included articles up to February 2021. Only English languages articles were included. Optical coherence tomography angiography provides a rapid and noninvasive quantitative assessment of the microcirculation of the retina, optic nerve, and choroid. Optical coherence tomography angiography uses the action of red blood cells as an intrinsic contrast agent. It has high reproducibility. Optical coherence tomography angiography studies have shown that microcirculation in the superficial optic nerve, peripapillary retina and the macula are reduced in glaucoma patients. Optical coherence tomography angiography parameters in the peripapillary region are thought to be better biomarkers in advanced glaucoma than OCT parameters. Recent literature shows that OCTA has the potential to provide useful information in the diagnosis and follow-up of patients with glaucoma

Bu çalışmada Türkiye’deki biyoloji öğretmen adaylarının evrim kabul düzeyleri, evrim öğretimine karşı tutum düzeylerini ve bunlar arasındaki ilişkiyi belirlemek amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmaya 579 biyoloji öğretmen adayı katılmıştır. Veriler Evrim Teorisi Kabul Ölçeği (MATE) ve Evrim Öğretimi Tutum ölçeği kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Bu iki kavram arasındaki ilişki ki-kare bağımsızlık testi ile incelenmiştir. Sonuçlar katılımcıların önemli bir çoğunluğunun evrimi kabul etmediğini (%37,7; 218 kişi) veya kararsız olduğunu (%52,2; 302 kişi) ortaya koymuştur. Öğretmen adaylarının evrimsel mekanizmalar, evrim teorisinin bilimsel geçerliliği ve evrimin bilim toplumundaki konumuna dair kabul düzeylerinin düşük olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Katılımcıların yaklaşık yarısı evrim öğretimine karşı orta düzeyde (%50,6’sı, 276 kişi) tutum sergilemiş olup tutum düzeyi yüksek kişilerin yaklaşık %12’lik (66 kişi) bir oranla azınlığı oluşturduğu bulunmuştur. Katılımcıların evrim kabul düzeyleri ile evrim öğretimi tutumları arasında olumlu ve orta düzeyde bir ilişki olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır.

WOS: 000456090800004, The association of the endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) G894T gene polymorphism with the severity of diabetic retinopathy (DRP) and macular edema (DME) was investigated. One hundred-seven patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus were included. Forty-five patients served as a control group. eNOS G894T gene polymorphism was analysed by polymerase chain reaction. The mean age was 55.8 +/- 9.4 years in the study group and 51.8 +/- 9.7 years in the control group. There was no significant difference in the genotypes between the diabetic and the control group, or between the non-DRP group and the DRP group. The frequency of the G allele was higher in the proliferative DRP group than that in the non-proliferative DRP group. The GG genotype of G894T gene polymorphism was associated with macular edema and hyperglycaemia. Evrim kuramı biyolojinin deneysel gerçeklerini, yaşamın bütünlüğü yanında biyolojik çeşitliliğini açıklayan ve biyolojik bilimleri organize eden merkezi bir kuramdır. Evrim kuramı, biyoloji eğitiminde de oldukça önemli bir yere sahiptir. Evrim kuramının açıklanmadığı bir biyoloji eğitiminde öğrenciler, bilimsel düşünme becerisini edinememekte ve hayatı anlamaya dair bir düzen ve tutarlılık sağlayan güçlü bir kavramsal çerçeveden mahrum kalmaktadır. Şüphesiz, etkili bir evrim öğretimi verecek nitelikte öğretmenler önem arz etmektedir. Bu noktadan hareketle bu çalışma Türkiye'deki biyoloji öğretmen adaylarının evrim konusundaki alan bilgilerini, evrim kuramını kabul etme düzeylerini, evrim öğretimine yönelik tutum ve öz yeterlik düzeylerini tespit etmek amacıyla tarama çalışmasıdır. Araştırmanın evrenini Türkiye'deki biyoloji öğretmen adayları oluşturmaktadır. Çalışmaya 2015-2016 öğretim yılında 12 farklı üniversitede öğrenim gören, son sınıf biyoloji öğretmenliği bölümü öğrencileri ile biyoloji bölümünden mezun olup öğretmenlik formasyon eğitimi alan toplam 579 biyoloji öğretmen adayı katılmıştır. Veri toplama aracı olarak dört alt ölçekten oluşan Evrim Teorisi ve Öğretimi anketi kullanılmıştır. Anketteki `Evrim Bilgi Testi` evrim teorisi anlayışlarını, `Evrim Teorisi Kabul Ölçeği` evrim teorisini kabul düzeylerini, `Evrim Teorisi Öğretimine Yönelik Tutum Ölçeği` evrim teorisinin öğretimine yönelik tutum düzeylerini tespit etmek amacıyla kullanılmış olup, `Evrim Öğretimi Öz Yeterlik İnanç Ölçeği` araştırmacı tarafından oluşturulmuştur. Veri analizi olarak; biyoloji öğretmen adaylarının Evrim Teorisi ve Öğretimi anketinin alt boyutlarına verdikleri cevapların betimleyici istatistikleri frekans, ortalama, standart sapma, minimum ve maksimum değerleriyle ifade edilmiştir. İlişkisel tarama modeli için her değişkenin kategorileri arasında bir farklılaşma olup olmadığını tespit etmek için ki-kare bağımsızlık testi, kavramlar arasındaki korelasyonu için Kendall's tau-b ve tau-c korelasyonu kullanılmıştır.Araştırma sonuçları biyoloji öğretmen adaylarının evrim konusundaki bilgi düzeylerinin yetersiz, evrim kuramını kabul düzeylerinin düşük, bu kuramın öğretimine yönelik tutumlarının olumsuz ve öz yeterlik düzeylerinin ise orta düzeyde olduğunu göstermektedir. Etkili evrim öğretimi için belirlenen bu etmenler arasındaki ilişki düzeyi sonuçlarına göre evrimi kabul etme ile öğretimine dair tutum düzeyi arasında orta düzeyde ve olumlu bir ilişki, diğer etmenler arasındaki ilişkinin ise düşük düzeyde olduğu tespit edilmiştir. The theory of of evolution explains the unity of life and the reasons behind biodiversity on earth and accepted as the central organizing theory of biological sciences. It is also important in learning and teaching in biology. Without the framework provided by the theory of evolution in biology education, students fail to understand how life and living things are connected. In this sense, effective education on evolution is a necessity in school science. No doubt that one of the most important elements in teaching the theory of evolution is biology teachers. To this end, this study set off to explore Turkish prospective biology teachers' knowledge about the theory of evolution, acceptance of the theory as a scientific theory, attitudes towards and self efficacy in teaching the theory of evolution. The sample of the study consisted of 579 prospective biology teachers from 12 different universities in Turkey. Data were collected through a questionnaire called the 'Theory of Evolution and its Teaching' which has four scales. The first scale of the questionnaire was the `Scale of Evolution Knowledge Test` which focused on the participants' knowledge and conceptions about the theory of evolution, the second was the `Acceptance Scale of Theory of Evolution` which assessed the participants' acceptance levels of the theory of evolution, the third was the `Scale of Attitude concerning Teaching Theory of Evolution` which assessed the participants' attitudes towards teaching the theory of evolution, and the forth scale was the `Scale of Teaching Evolution Self-Efficacy Belief` which was created by the researcher and assessed the participants' self efficacy beliefs in teaching evotlution. In analysis, firstly, participants' responses to the questionnaire items were analyzed using descriptive statistics using frequency, average and standard deviation. In order to identify if there is a differentiation between the categories of each variables in the relational polling model, chi-square substantive test, for the correlational analysis, Kendall's tau-b or tau-c correlation was used. The results of the study indicated that the knowledge level of the prospective biology teachers regarding the theory of evolution was insufficient, their acceptance level of the theory of evolution was low, their attitudes towards teaching the theory is negative, and their self-efficacy levels were average. Correlational analysis revealed that there was an average and positive relation between accepting the theory of evolution and the level of attitudes towards its teaching while the relation between the other factors were low. 297

Thepurpose of this study is to develop a valid and reliable instrument formeasuring prospective biology teachers' self-efficacy beliefs about teachingevolution. The research was conducted on a study group consisted of 212prospective biology teachers. Content validity was established through reviewof related literature and expert opinions. Exploratory Factor Analysis andConfirmatory Factor Analysis are performed in order to establish the scale'sconstruct validity. The scale's reliability coefficient and item-totalcorrelations are calculated. Cronbach alpha coefficient of the scale is 0,87.Internal consistency coefficients for the sub-scales varied between 0,81 and0,83 and found to be within admissible limits. In light of these results, itcould be argued that the scale is reliable and valid instrument and can be usedin identifiying prospective biology teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs aboutteaching evolution.&nbsp

Ligneous conjunctivitis is one of the very rarelyseen conjunctivitis and a clinical picture that isdifficult to manage for both patient and physician. Ligneous conjunctivitis, often bilateral, ischaracterized by pseudomembran formationwith ligneous-like appearance. It is seen as fibrin-rich and firm material covering the all areaof the palpebral conjunctiva with overlying yellow mucoid discharge when lids are inverted.Lesions have a tendency of recurrence even iftreated suitably. Association of ligneous conjunctivitis with systemic plasminogen deficiency has been shown. Lesions may also developin the other mucosal structures of the body.Concurrent or accompanied systemic pathologies together with its presentation have beenreported. New treatment modalities have beentried to apply for management of ligneous conjunctivitis in individual case reports in recentyears. It is important to early and correct diagnosis of this type of conjunctivitis as well as suitable management. Update information aboutpresentation, history, etiopatogenesis and management of ligneous conjunctivitis has beengiven in this review article, Lignöz konjonktivit oldukça nadir görülen konjonktivitlerden olup hem hasta hem de hekim için üstesinden gelmesi zorluk oluşturan bir tablodur. Sıklıkla iki gözü de tutan lignöz konkonktivit odunumsu görünümümde yalancı membran oluşumu ile karakterizedir. Göz kapakları ters çevrildiğinde tüm konjonktivayı kaplamış olarak görülen lezyon, fibrinden zengin olup sarımsı mukoid bir akıntı ile örtülmüş olabilir. Lezyon tedavi edilse bile tekrarlama eğilimindedir. Lignöz konjonktivitin plazminojen defekti ile ilişkili olduğu gösterilmiştir. Lezyonlar konjonktiva dışında vücuttaki diğer mukozalarda da ortaya çıkabilir. Lignöz konjonktivite eşlik eden diğer sistemik patolojiler de bildirilmiştir. Son yıllarda tedavisinde yeni yöntemler uygulanmaya çalışılmaktadır. Az rastlanan bu konjonktivit türünün zamanında ve doğru teşhis edilip tedavisinin doğru yönetilmesi önem arz etmektedir. Makalede lignöz konjonktivitin klinik, tarihçe, patogenez ve güncel tedavileri ile ilgili bilgiler verilmiştir.

Amaç: Çalışmamızda 23 gauge transkonjonktival pars plana vitrektomi tekniği ile vitreoretinal cerrahi uygulanan hastaların, xenon ışık kaynağı kullanılarak yapılan ameliyatlarının geriye dönük olarak incelenerek ameliyat süresi, anatomik başarı ve komplikasyonların incelenmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Gereç yöntem: Afyon Kocatepe Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları Anabilim Dalında Ocak 2010 ile Aralık 2010 tarihleri arasında, Xenon ışık kaynağı kullanılarak gerçekleştirilen 23 gauge pars plana vitrektomi ameliyatı yapılan 135 hastanın 135 gözü çalışmaya dahil edildi. Yirmi üç gauge pars plana vitrektomi tekniği ile vitreoretinal cerrahi uygulanan hastaların kayıtları geriye dönük olarak incelenerek hastaların yaş, cinsiyet, ameliyat endikasyonları, anestezi şekli, anatomik başarı, cerrahinin süresi, gelişen komplikasyonlar, kullanılan göz içi tamponat türü araştırıldı. Bulgular: Hastaların 62’si (% 45.9) erkek, 73’ü (% 54.1) kadındı. Yaş ortalaması 52.4±12.23 yıl idi. Xenon ışık kaynağı kullanılarak gerçekleştirilen 23 gauge pars plana vitrektomi ameliyatı yapılan hastalarda anatomik başarı oranı yüksek olup 134 hastada anatomik başarı elde edilmiş, yalnızca 1 gözde anatomik başarı sağlanamadı. Ortalama ameliyat süresi 65.56±25.78 dakika idi. Gerçekleştirilen pars plana vitrektomi ameliyatlarının 58’inde (% 43) herhangi bir retinal tamponat kullanılmayıp, geri kalan ameliyatlarda kullanılan göz içi tamponatlar ise; 46 (% 34) hastada silikon, 11 (% 8.1) hastada hava, 10 (% 7.4) hastada C3F8 gazı ve 10 (% 7.4) hastada SF6 gazıydı. Xenon ışık kaynağı kullanılarak gerçekleştirilen 23 gauge pars plana vitrektomi ameliyatı yapılan hastalarda ameliyat esnasında gelişen komplikasyonlar 10 (% 7.4) hastada iatrojenik retinal yırtık, 1 (% 0.7) hastada koroid dekolmanı ve 1 (% 0.7) hastada suprakoroidal hemoraji idi. Geriye kalan 123 (% 91) hastanın ameliyatı esnasındaysa herhangi bir komplikasyon gelişmedi. Hiçbir hastada anesteziye bağlı bir komplikasyona rastlanmadı. Sonuç: Xenon ışık kaynağı, ciddi intraoperatif komplikasyonlar gelişmeksizin daha kısa süreler içinde 23 gauge transkonjonktival pars plana vitrektominin yapılabilmesi için yeterli aydınlanma ile yüksek görüntü kalitesi sağlayabilir.

Retina is the neuronal layer in which images of the objects focus on and reach the visual center of the brain, occipital cortex, via neurons emanating from photoreceptor layer of retina. Retina is consisting of neurosensory retina and retina pigment epithelium(RPE). Having most important duties for the retina functions, RPE is settle on Bruch membran that lye above the choriocapillaris and has weak regenerative capability. Each retinal layer may present a different importance for the pathological situations like glaucoma and retinal diseases or electrophysiological tests. Important retinal anatomic structures have been aimed to be given briefly in this review article, Retina objelerin görüntülerinin odaklandığı sinir tabakası olup buradan kalkan nöronlar beynin görme tabakası olan oksipital kortekse kadar giderler. Retina nörosensöriyel tabaka ve retina pigment epitelinden oluşur. Retina pigment epiteli koryokapillaris tabakasının üstünde bulunan Bruch membranı üzerinde yerleşik olup, rejenere olma kapasitesi zayıftır ve retinanın fonksiyonel işleyişi için çok önemli görevleri vardır. Glokom, retinal hastalıklar ve elektrofizyolojik testler açısından her tabakanın önemi bulunmaktadır. Makalede retinanın önemli anatomik yapıları ile ilgili bilgilerin öz olarak verilmesi amaçlanmıştır

Amaç: Santral kornea kalınlığının(SKK) ölçümünde ultrasonik pakimetri(UP), Scheimpflug fotograflama(SF) ve optik kohorens tomografi(OKT) yöntemleri ile elde edilen değerlerin karşılaştırılması. Gereç ve Yöntem: 43 sağlıklı genç erişkinin sağ ve sol göz (toplam 86 göz) santral korneal kalınlığı UP, SF ve OKT yöntemleri ile ölçüldü. Santral kornea kalınlığı, yaş, cinsiyet, göz içi basıncı ve otorefraktokeratometre değerleri kaydedildi. Elde edilen değerler karşılaştırıldı. Bulgular: Ortalama yaş 21,35 ± 0,75 (20-24) idi. UP ile öl çülen ortalama SKK sağ göz için 558,42 ± 38,87 (477-620) mikron, sol göz için 556,84 ± 39,83 (477-641) mikron idi. SF ile ölçülen ortalama SKK sağ göz için 555,02 ± 37,90 (486-631) mikron, sol göz için 550,44 ± 42,30 (453-630) mikron idi.OKT ile ölçülen ortalama SKK sağ göz için 563, 52 ± 38,52 (492-644) mikron, sol göz için 563,72 ± 39,84(482-644) mikron idi.Her üç yöntem ile ölçülen de ğerler karşılatırıldığında UP ve SF ile elde edilen değerler arasında istatistiki olarak anlamlı fark saptanmaz iken OKT ile elde edilen değerler ile arasında UP(P

Erişkin körlüğünün en önemli nedenlerinden birisi patogenezi tam olarak açıklanamamış diyabetik retinopatidir. Diyabetik retinopati patogenezinin anlaşılması daha iyi tedavisine ön ayak olabilir. Diyabetik retinopatide vasküler hasar ön plandadır. Endotelin vasküler tonus ve yapının korunmasında önemli rolü olduğuna ilişkin kanıtlar vardır. Endotel türevi vazoaktif mediatörlerden en önemlilerinden biri nitrik oksittir. Nitrik oksit vasküler düz kas hücrelerinin antiproliferatif düzenlenmesinde anahtar role sahip çok fonksiyonlu bir moleküldür. Diabetik retinopati patogenezinde nitrik oksitin de rolü olabileceği savunulmaktadır. Nitrik oksit sentezi yapan üç tür NOS izoenzimi vardır. Bunların içinden temel olarak vasküler endotelde bulunmakta olan izoenzim, endotelial-NOS (eNOS) olarak adlandırılır. eNOS endotel fonksiyonunun korunmasında gereklidir . Retinanın proliferatif hastalıklarında nitrik oksidin rolü olabileceği, nitrik oksidin hücre büyümesini kontrol edebileceği bildirilmiştir. Bu açıdan diyabetin mikrovasküler komplikasyonlarının belirlenmesinde eNOS ilgi çekici görünmektedir. eNOS geninde çeşitli polimorfizmler tanımlanmıştır. Özellikle promotor bölgesindeki T-786C, 4. intron bölgesinde 27-bp tekrarı ve 7. eksondaki Glu298Asp dikkat çekmiştir. Endoteliyal NOS gen polimorfizm ile ilgili olarak retinadaki defektif eNOS ekspresyonu özellikle diabetik makula ödemi gelişimine katkıda bulunabilmektedir. Çalışmalardaki farklılıklar diyabetik retinopati ile eNOS gen polimorfizmi arasındaki ilişkinin coğrafik ve etnik farklılıklara göre değişebildiğini göstermektedir. Bu makalede NO ve ilgili gen polimorfizmlerinin diabetik retinopati patogenezindeki önemi gözden geçirilmeye çalışılmıştır. One of the most important cause of blindness in developed or developing countries is diabetic retinopathy, of which pathogenesis has not been yet clarified exactly. Understanding of pathogenesis of DRP can cause better management of this disease. Vascular damage is leading pathology in diabetic retinopathy. There is some proof that endothelin has important role in maintenance of vascular tonus and structure. Nitric oxide (NO) is one of the most important vasoactive mediators derived from endothelium. Nitric oxide is multifunctional molecule having key role on the anti-proliferative regulation of vascular smooth muscle cells. It has also been suggested that nitric oxide can play a role in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy. There are three nitric oxide synthase (NOS) isoenzymes producing NO. Out of them, the isoenzyme present essentially in vascular endothelium is called as endothelial- NOS (eNOS) and needed to protect endothelial functions. It has been reported that NO can control cellular growth and play role in the retinal pathologies due to proliferative retinal diseases. From this respect, eNOS appears to be an interesting molecule in the identification of microvascular complications of diabetes. Various polymorphisms have also been identified in the eNOS gene. The T-786C polymorphism located in promoter region of eNOS gene, 27-bp duplication in intron 4 region and Glu298Asp in exon 7 have been attracting attention. Defective retinal eNOS expression related to its polymorphisms may contribute to the development of macular edema. Differences among the studies may demonstrate that a relationship between diabetic retinopathy and eNOS gene polymorphism can vary due to geographic and ethnic differences. Importance of NO and relevant gene polymorphisms in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy has been reviewed in this article.
