Abstract

Objectives: It was aimed to determine the level of physical activity and related factors in pregnant women.Methods: The study is a mixed methods study. The participants are women applied to the pregnancy outpatient clinic of a hospital. The level of physical activity was assessed with the Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire. Sociodemographic questions and seven questions of the International Physical Activity Environment Module were asked. Besides, in-depth interviews were conducted with 14 women.Results: The study was conducted with 304 women. The median age was 29.0 (18.0–40.0) years. The mean total activity and sedentary activity scores were 195.8 ± 107.9 and 37.22 ± 31.08 MET-hours/week, respectively. Pregnant women were mostly involved in light-intensity and housework/caregiving activities. Most of the participants mentioned that they were less active than pre-pregnancy period. The most common reasons for being less active were weakness, fatigue, lack of time and complaints such as low back pain and nausea.Conclusion: More than half of the pregnant women mentioned that they were less active during pregnancy. Thus, interventions should be planned to increase physical activity level of pregnant women.

2. A spontaneous transomental hernia: A rare cause of bowel obstruction

Abstract

Internal hernias (IH) are rare situations that account for 0.5-3% of all cases of intestinal obstruction. Transomental hernia is a rare subtype, hardly diagnosed, and represents approximately only 2% of internal hernias. In 2018, a 41-year-old female patient presented to Marmara University Hospital emergency service with abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Her medical history included asthma, and she had no abdominal surgery. With the preliminary diagnosis of small bowel obstruction, laparotomy was done and showed a loop of ileum was herniated through into an unusual defect of the omentum. The obstructed loop of the small intestine into the hernia site was reduced. It was seen as viable, so no resection was necessitated. We divided the greater omentum into two parts from the edge of the defect area to prevent recurrences. The patient\"s postoperative period was uneventful, and she was discharged on the second postoperative day. Small bowel strangulation is more seen in transomental hernia than in other internal hernia types. So it is related to high morbidity and mortality. Surgery should not be delayed to reduce complications.

Abstract

Aim This study was conducted to determine the effect of the education program based on the Health Belief Model (HBM) on the physical activity beliefs and behaviors of university students. Subject and methods This quasi-experimental study was carried out with one experiment and one control group where a pre-test and post-test were applied to the participant. The study included 129 participants (experimental group = 61, control group = 68) studying at two universities between March-September 2019. A 4-week HBM-based training program was applied to the students in the experimental group. Data were collected with the \"Personal Information Form,\" \"International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ)\" and \"Exercise Health Belief Model Scale (EHBMS).\" Chi-square test, T-test for dependent and independent groups, Wilcoxon sign test, and Mann-Whitney U tests were used in the evaluation of the data. Result The EHBMS (p = 0.009) and MET (p=0.000) total score averages of the experimental group were found to be statistically significantly higher than the control group in the post-test. Conclusion We determined that the HBM-based education program implemented within the scope of this study positively affects the physical activity beliefs and behaviors of the students. Nurses studying with students can use this program as a guide.

Abstract

Psychological health problems such as depression, anxiety and feelings of distress are often seen in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Religious coping in dealing with psychological health problems is one of the methods commonly used by cardiac patients. This study was conducted to determine the depression levels and religious coping methods of individuals diagnosed with ACS and identify the relationship between their positive or negative religious coping methods and their depression levels. The descriptive and correlational study was conducted with 253 ACS patients. In the study, the depression levels of most patients were low, but 19.8% showed moderate-severe depressive symptoms. It was found that the patients adopted positive religious coping styles on a high level, but there was no significant relationship between positive religious coping and depression levels (p > 0.05). It is recommended that health professionals also closely monitor ACS patients for depressive symptoms after their diagnosis, encouraging patients to use positive religious coping styles to support their well-being and recovery against this life-threatening disease.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the emotional reactions of pregnant women towards the pandemic and to increase awareness of healthcare professionals on this subject. In this descriptive, cross‐sectional, and correlational study, an online questionnaire was applied to 375 pregnant women (n = 375). Data were collected with pregnant information form, Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale and Beck Hopelessness Scale. The mean age of the pregnant women was 29.495 ± 4.301, and the mean gestational week was 27.469 ± 7.971. Pregnant women's levels of perceived stress and intolerance to uncertainty were high. There was a moderate positive correlation between stress and uncertainty levels of the women who stated that they experienced mild hopelessness. It is recommended to identify risky groups and provide the necessary psychological support by health professionals during the pandemic.

Abstract

This cross-sectional study examined the biomechanical and viscoelastic properties of the Achilles tendon (AT) and plantar fascia (PF) and analyzed their relationship in pregnant women with pelvic girdle pain (PGP). The study was conducted in a public hospital between January and May 2021. Forty-four pregnant women (PGP+, n: 22; PGP-, n: 22) and 21 non-pregnant women were included. Navicular drop was determined and the tonus, stiffness, and creep of PF and AT were measured by Myometer. Navicular drop was significantly different between the PGP+ and the non-pregnant group in both feet (Right, p = .001; Left, p = .05). A correlation between tissue properties and the presence of PGP was not found. No findings indicated that the biomechanical and viscoelastic properties of the AT and PF were affected by the physiology of pregnancy. Moreover, no relationship was observed between the presence of PGP and the tissue properties of the AT and PF.

Abstract

IntroductionChildhood cancer is a leading cause of death. It is unclear whether the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted childhood cancer mortality. In this study, we aimed to establish all-cause mortality rates for childhood cancers during the COVID-19 pandemic and determine the factors associated with mortality.MethodsProspective cohort study in 109 institutions in 41 countries. Inclusion criteria: children ResultsAll-cause mortality was 3.4% (n=71/2084) at 30-day follow-up, 5.7% (n=113/1969) at 90-day follow-up and 13.0% (n=206/1581) at 12-month follow-up. The median time from diagnosis to multidisciplinary team (MDT) plan was longest in low-income countries (7 days, IQR 3–11). Multivariable analysis revealed several factors associated with 12-month mortality, including low-income (OR 6.99 (95% CI 2.49 to 19.68); pConclusionsChildren with cancer are more likely to die within 30 days if infected with SARS-CoV-2. However, timely treatment reduced odds of death. This report provides crucial information to balance the benefits of providing anticancer therapy against the risks of SARS-CoV-2 infection in children with cancer.

Abstract

Obesogens affect lipid metabolism, and genetic or epigenetic factors may also contribute to the progression of obesity. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are the most striking among obesogens. Bisphenol A (BPA) is an estrogenic EDC used in food containers, adhesives, dye powders, and dental fillers. We aimed to elucidate molecular mechanisms of BPA’s obesogenic effects focusing on obesogenic pathways in the liver including fibroblast growth factor (FGF) and Dnmt3a which is its epigenetic regulator, oxidant-antioxidant status, and inflammatory cytokines. Zebrafish were divided into three groups as control, low-dose BPA (1 μm BPA), and high-dose BPA groups (10 μm BPA). At the end of 30 days, oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed, fasting blood glucose levels were measured, and hepatopancreas tissues were taken. Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and nitric oxide (NO) activities were examined in the hepatopancreas. Inflammatory cytokines, lepa, fgf21, and dnmt3a expressions were determined by RT-PCR. BPA exposure increased the body weights, il1ß, tnfα, il6, lepa, fgf21, and dnmt3a expressions, impaired glucose tolerance, and oxidant–antioxidant status in a dose-dependent manner. Hepatocyte degeneration, lipid vacuolization, and vasocongestion were observed in both BPA-exposed groups. Our study suggests impaired glucose tolerance, oxidant–antioxidant balance, increased inflammatory response, fgf21 expression, and dnmt3a expressions as the possible mechanisms for the BPA-induced obesity model in zebrafish.
