Abstract

When someone violates a social norm, others may think that some sanction would be appropriate. We examine how the experience of emotions like anger and disgust relate to the judged appropriateness of sanctions, in a pre-registered analysis of data from a large-scale study in 56 societies. Across the world, we find that individuals who experience anger and disgust over a norm violation are more likely to endorse confrontation, ostracism and, to a smaller extent, gossip. Moreover, we find that the experience of anger is consistently the strongest predictor of judgments of confrontation, compared to other emotions. Although the link between state-based emotions and judgments may seem universal, its strength varies across countries. Aligned with theoretical predictions, this link is stronger in societies, and among individuals, that place higher value on individual autonomy. Thus, autonomy values may increase the role that emotions play in guiding judgments of social sanctions.

Abstract

The study presented in this paper aims to examine the frequency of psychosomatic symptoms in students and their interaction with learning strategies and techniques. In addition, it aims to examine anxiety as a personality trait and its mediation effect between learning strategies and psychosomatic symptoms, with self-regulated learning linking cognitive, motivational, and emotional aspects of learning, serving as a theoretical framework. The sample comprises 420 students, aged 13.7 years on average, with a balanced percentage regarding gender. Through a descriptive analysis, it has been established that the commonest psychosomatic symptoms are gastrointestinal, pseudo-neurological, and symptoms of pain/feeling of weakness. 13. Beyond humor styles: the nature of humor types and differences in basic personality traits from Zuckerman's Alternative Five-Factor Model.

Abstract

BACKGROUND Findings show that the complex nature of humor and its personality basis can be more comprehensively understood if humor styles are analyzed simultaneously within humor types, rather than separately. PARTICIPANTS AND PROCEDURE Utilizing two independent samples (N1 = 253, N2 = 353) of self-report responses to the Humor Styles Questionnaire (HSQ) and the Zuckerman-Kuhlman-Aluja Personality Questionnaire-Short Form, this paper outlines how the HSQ responses result in three humor use types following cluster analysis. Cluster differences in humor styles and personality traits were analyzed using ANOVA. RESULTS In both samples, a humor type characteristic of individuals who scored lower in the positive and higher in the negative humor styles was revealed. People within this humor type also scored significantly higher in the personality measures of neuroticism and aggressiveness. A second humor type replicated in the two studies described individuals scoring higher for each of the four humor styles. People within this type also scored significantly higher on extraversion and sensation seeking, suggesting a need for cortical arousal. The third humor type members scored lower in each of the humor styles (apart from the affiliative humor style scores for one of the samples). This humor type requires further investigation. Abstract

This paper investigates how horizontal and vertical individualism and collectivism predict self-report loneliness in addition to the variance accounted for by age and sex in 28 countries (N = 8,345). Horizontal and vertical aspects of individualism and collectivism had small but significant contributions to predicting loneliness. Horizontal-collectivism (for 19 country samples) and, to a lesser extent, horizontal-individualism (for seven country samples), significantly predicted lower loneliness scores. Vertical-individualism (for 16 country samples), and to a lesser extent, vertical-collectivism (for six country samples), predicted feeling more loneliness among our participants. Adjusted R2 values suggested that between 0.6% and 27.7% of self-report loneliness was predicted. These results suggest that those who value egalitarian social relations also tend to report being less lonely whereas those who value individuality and competitiveness endorse the loneliness items more. These results are of importance to those investigating and helping lonely individuals by appreciating the influence of perceived culture. © 2023 The Authors

Horizontal and vertical aspects of individualism and collectivism had small but significant contributions to predicting loneliness. Horizontal-collectivism (for 19 country samples) and, to a lesser extent, horizontal-individualism (for seven country samples), significantly predicted lower loneliness scores. Vertical-individualism (for 16 country samples), and to a lesser extent, vertical-collectivism (for six country samples), predicted feeling more loneliness among our participants. Adjusted R2 values suggested that between 0.6% and 27.7% of self-report loneliness was predicted. These results suggest that those who value egalitarian social relations also tend to report being less lonely whereas those who value individuality and competitiveness endorse the loneliness items more. Abstract

Objectives: The present paper tests the cross‐national stability of the HEXACO‐60 structure across 18 countries from four continents. Gender and age differences across countries will be examined. Finally, this is the first study to explicitly analyze the relationships between the HEXACO and social position. Method: Ten thousand two hundred and ninety eight subjects (5,410 women and 4,888 men) from 18 countries and 13 languages were analyzed. Confirmatory factor analysis techniques were used to test configural, metric and scalar invariance models. Congruence coefficients with the original structure of the HEXACO‐60 were computed for every culture. Effect sizes of gender, age, and social position factors across countries were also computed. Results: HEXACO‐60 demonstrates configural and metric invariance, but not scalar invariance. Congruence coefficients show a great equivalence in almost all countries and factors. Only Emotionality presents a large gender difference across countries. No relevant effect of age is observed. A profile of high scores on Honesty‐Humility, Extraversion, Conscientiousness, and Openness to Experience, and low scores on Emotionality increases the likelihood of achieving a higher social position, although the effect sizes are small. Conclusions: HEXACO‐60 is a useful instrument to conduct personality trait research and practice around the world. Implications of gender, social position, and country differences are discussed. Abstract

As a psychologist, Philip Zimbardo became worldwide known for his 1971 Stanford prison experiment. Despite numerous controversies and convictions, as well as ethical doubts, Zimbardo's experiment is one of the most known and also one of the most influence experiment in the field of social psychology. The aim of study was to investigate how readily people would conform to the roles of guard and prisoner in a role-playing exercise that simulated prison life. It showed that prisoners and guards had rapidly adapted to their roles, stepping beyond the boundaries of what had been predicted and leading to dangerous and psychologically damaging situations. Today, Zimbardo tries to find out the reasons of evil and Lucifer's effect among people. He founded the Heroic Imagination Project which has a goal to prevent evil by researching and talking about daily heroism of the average people. Abstract

Several personality models are known for being replicable across cultures, such as the five-factor model (FFM) or Eysenck’s psychoticism-extraversion-neuroticism (PEN) model, and are for this reason considered universal. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the cross-cultural replicability of the recently revised Alternative Five-Factor Model (AFFM). 15,048 participants from 23 cultures completed the Zuckerman-Kuhlman-Aluja Personality Questionnaire (ZKA-PQ) aimed at assessing personality according to this revised AFFM. Internal consistencies, gender differences and correlations with age were similar across cultures for all five factors and facet-scales. The AFFM structure was very similar across samples and can be considered as highly replicable with total congruence coefficients ranging from .94 to .99. Measurement invariance across cultures was assessed using multi-group confirmatory factor analyses and each higher-order personality factor did reach configural and metric invariance. Scalar invariance was never reached, which implies that culture-specific norms should be considered. The underlying structure of the ZKA-PQ replicates well across cultures, suggesting that this questionnaire can be used in a large diversity of cultures and that the AFFM might be universal as the FFM or the PEN model. This suggests that more research is needed to identify and define an integrative framework underlying these personality models.

Abstract

Short scales from the domain the personality psychology like 10-items operationalization of Big Five model (BFI-10) or Single-Item-Self-Esteem-Scale (SISES) as Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale equivalent, could be valueable step forward in personality assesment. Weather short scales assessments are in accordance with tendencies from long questionnaires then it could be very practical and valuable psychological tool. The purpose of this study is to validate 6-items self-satisfaction scale (as one of self-concept aspect). Scale is operationalization of multidimensional hierarchical model of self-concept. The specificity of the scale is that every primary domain (competence, family, social, physical, emotional and academic) measure is based on only one item, while general dimension can be estimated as scale Burt or Hotelling component. Items are answered on 5-point scale. Scale SC-6 is validated through two studies. First was conducted on sample of 141 student (31% male and 61% female), age between 18 and 38 years (M=20.43; SD=4.07). Second study included 261 (42% male and 58% female) students with same range of age (M=21.09; SD=5.08). SC-6 scale shows satisfactory reliability in both studies. Convergent validity is examined over SC-6 correlations with Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) and Schwarzer-Jerusalem General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES). All corrected item-total correlations indicate satisfactory values (>.30) while items intercorrelations are completely in accordance with previous studies. Exploratory and Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed hypothesis on single latenet variable that match to general self-satisfaction. First principal component explain 45% of variance. Hotelling and Burt components correlation coefficient (r=.94) suggests that both of them can be used as adequate SC-6 measure. Correlation between general SC-6 score and Rosenberg self-esteem score (r=.26) and Schwarzer-Jerusalem general self-efficacy measure (r=.57) are both significant (p<.01). According to preliminary findings, SC-6 scale can be used in assessments of self-satisfaction as self-concept aspect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) resulted in adequate fit indices for the five factors based on the comparative fit index (CFI), Tucker–Lewis index (TLI; >.90), and RMSEA (.031-.081). A series of CFA to assess measurement invariance across cultures resulted in adequate CFIs and TLIs for configural and metric invariance. However, factors did not show scalar invariance. Alpha internal consistencies of five factors ranged between .77 (Sensation Seeking) and .86 (Neuroticism). The average alpha of the 20 facets was .64 with a range from .43 (SS4) to .75 (AG1). Nevertheless, alpha reliabilities were lower in some facets and cultures, especially for Senegal and Togo. The average percentage of the variance explained based on the adjusted R2 was 2.9%, 1.7%, and 5.1% for age, sex, and, cultures, respectively. Finally, multidimensional scaling suggested that geographically or culturally close cultures share mean profile similarities.
