Abstract

We investigate the response of a Ramsey-type experiment on an additional oscillating magnetic field. This superimposed field is oriented in the same direction as the static main magnetic field and causes a modulation of the original Larmor spin precession frequency. The observable magnitude of this modulation reduces at higher frequencies of the oscillating field. It disappears completely if the interaction time of the particles matches the oscillation period, which we call resonant cancellation. We present an analytical approach that describes the effect and compare it to a measurement using a monochromatic cold neutron beam.

Abstract

In order to meet current and future efforts to reduce fuel consumption and gas emissions, an increasing number of ships are being retrofitted with one of the wind-assisted propulsion solutions. Abstract

This paper examines the cues that typically differentiate phishing emails from genuine emails. The research is conducted in two stages. In the first stage, we identify the cues that actually differentiate between phishing and genuine emails. These are the consistency and personalisation of the message, the perceived legitimacy of links and sender, and the presence of spelling or grammatical irregularities. In the second stage, we identify the cues that participants use to differentiate between phishing and genuine emails. This revealed that participants often use cues that are not good indicators of whether an email is phishing or genuine. This includes the presence of legal disclaimers, the quality of visual presentation, and the positive consequences emphasised in the email. Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine whether the use of the electromagnetic field (EMF) of 50 Hz frequency and magnetic induction of 0.25 T could make for successful inactivation of a phytoplankton species, namely, marine microalgae Tetraselmis suecica and two bacteria strains; Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis. A number of laboratory electromagnetic field tolerance experiments with the selected organisms was performed; each microorganism was treated for various lengths of time; 1, 5 and 10 minutes, and in three various media with special regards to the conductivity. Bacteria were exposed to high, moderate and extremely low conductivity media, and the microalgae to high, low and extremely low conductivity media. The microbial viability was checked by counting the bacterial colony forming units, as well as alive and dead stained microalgae cells. It was found that the time of exposure to the EMF had a profound effect on the viability of T. suecica only in the extremely low conductivity media, and that it did not affect the viability of E. coli or E. faecalis at all.

Abstract

Unusual occurrence of planktonic diatom species, Chaetoceros bacteriastroides and Chaetoceros pseudosymmetricus, was noticed in three different marine ecosystems of Adriatic Sea: the Krka Estuary and Telaščica Bay in the Central Adriatic, and in southern Adriatic offshore. From 2010 to 2015, these two Chaetoceros species were recorded in heterogeneous environmental conditions and in a very low abundances. Both species are regarded as very rare in world oceans, and consequently knowledge of their distribution and ecology is rather poor. Primarily described from tropical waters and showing Indo-Pacific distribution, C. bacteriastroides and C. pseudosymmetricus findings in Adriatic represent the northernmost records in world's oceans and seas. For C. pseudosymmetricus this is also the first occurrence in European seas. Areal expansion and introduction of new phytoplankton species in the Adriatic Sea might be related to different circulation regimes in the Ionian Sea and the concurrent rise in sea temperature in the Mediterranean in the last decade. Recent investigations have shown that entering currents, of either Atlantic/Western Mediterranean or Eastern Mediterranean origin, modify the composition of the plankton community in the Adriatic by bringing different newcomers.

Abstract

Chemistry can influence dose rates by two aspects: chemistry conditions applied in the primary circuit and removal of (in)soluble particles. Since the primary coolant activity can have a significant impact on area dose rates and personnel doses, the main objective of purifying the primary coolant is to act on the radioactive source and keep it as low as reasonably achievable. Reduction of occupational exposure maintains confidence among workers and the public. Other factors, such as fuel duty, cycle operation, length and history, materials, steam generator (SG) surface area and particulate redeposition, also have significant contribution to the doses. Ion exchange (IEX) is one of the most common and effective liquid effluents treatment methods in nuclear fuel cycle operations. IEX technology encompasses the sciences of thermodynamics, kinetics, ion chemistry, fluid mechanics, and economics. In the industrial water treatment, cation exchangers are used in combination with downstream anion exchangers or as a mixed bed demineralizer (combination of both cation and anion) for full demineralization. IEX is also an effective treatment method for liquid radioactive waste. In spite of its advanced stage of development, various aspects of ion exchange technology are being studied to improve its efficiency and economy in its application to radioactive waste management and coolant cleaning processes. Over the years desire to improve the efficiency of fine colloidal particles removal and corrosion particulate removal in the primary systems has increased. There is a need for more and more efficient purification in order to decrease worker’s dose during maintenance but also to decrease volumes of radioactive resin waste. Homogenization of products and usage on primary coolant treatment take into account the compromise between source term reductions, liquid and solid waste, and buying and disposal cost. As the disposal costs are much greater than the buying costs, optimization of the lifetime of the purification media, along with an increasing efficiency of pollutant removal is a major goal. One of the effective purification methods for particulate removal is layering of macroporous (MP) resin in clean-up beds, spent fuel pit (SFP) and radwaste beds. Lately, MP resins were also implemented in the primary circuit demineralizers of NPP Krško. The paper evaluates resin purification efficiency of different primary media, and assesses performance of gel and macroporous resin types.
