Abstract

Mountainous rural areas are vulnerable to inappropriate land management, which is particularly visible in the Polish Carpathians. This paper attempts to diagnose the causes and effects of spatial chaos in this area, using the DPSIR method. The Three Questions method was used to assist in analysing the effects of disorder in the context of violating sustainable development. The analysis demonstrated that the causes of spatial disorder were mainly of legal and historical origins, with the most visible effects of this chaos being those related to the dispersion of buildings. Minimising spatial chaos requires extensive education, as well as amending legislation to limit the scope of decisions on development conditions. A national financial mechanism supporting the development of the Carpathians would also seem to be a desirable improvement.

Abstract

The paper presents an analysis of selected environment elements, which were subjected to anthropopressure in the Lisia Góra forest nature reserve, located within the city of Rzeszów (SE Poland). The main aim of the study was to indicate the intensity and forms of anthropopressure within the relief, soil and vascular flora. Changes in the relief were shown for the period 2010−2019 using the analysis of geomorphological processes and the mapping of anthropogenic terrain forms. Additionally, the litter in the reserve was examined. Soil studies were performed with standard methods in 2016, and the degree of anthropopressure was shown particularly through the parameters of soil compaction and acidification. Changes occurring within the vascular flora were determined by means of anthropogenic indicators of flora changes in the time horizons 2002 and 2016. 10. A QUARRY - A WOUND IN THE LANDSCAPE OR ENRICHMENT OF ITS STRUCTURE?

Abstract

The article presents the importance of abandoned quarries for the mosaic landscape structure. Five objects and their surroundings in a 100-m zone located in the Polish Western Carpathians were analysed in terms of plant communities, flora, physical and chemical parameters of soils, and diversity of relief. The objects, which were originally used for excavation of marls, were characterised by the largest differences in soil parameters between the quarry and the surroundings. Xerothermic vegetation was noted to have developed in this area. Objects established on sandstones were characterised by the highest contrast between plant species overgrowing the quarries and the surroundings. The geomorphological, soil, and vegetation contrasts between the quarries and their buffer zone make them distinctive patches within the landscape matrix. After several dozen years of succession processes, they harmonised visually with the surrounding landscape. Since they are colonised by valuable communities and species, these areas should be regarded as valuable enrichment of the landscape structure, which may be reflected in their geotouristic potential.
