macrobius ,late antiquity – middle ages ,edition ,research ,historiography ,problem ,text ,History of education ,LA5-2396 - Abstract
The article examines the principal English-language studies of the last century focused on exploring the personality of Macrobius (5th century) and his works — Saturnalia (Saturnalia [ed. Willis, 1963]), Commentary on the 'Dream of Scipio' (Commentarii in Somnium Scipionis [ed. Willis, 1963]), and On the differences and similarities of Greek and Latin verbs (De verborum graeci et latini differentiis vel societatibus excerpta [ed. De Paolis, 1990]), written for educational purposes and representing a compen-dium of Greek knowledge. Interest in Macrobius's creative legacy notably intensified towards the end of the 19th century, a trend linked to the release of critical editions of Macrobian texts and their subsequent translations into French. In particular, the study analyzes the research of Thomas Whittaker (Macrobius; or philosophy, science and letters in the year 400; published in 1923), William Harris Stahl (Macrobius, Commentary on the ‘Dream of Scipio’, published in 1952), Alan Cameron (The date and identity of Macro-bius [published in 1966] and Macrobius, Avienus, and Avianus [published in 1967]), Herman De Ley (Macrobius and Numenius. A study of Macrobius, ‘In Somn.’ I, c. 12; published in 1972), Stephen Gersh (Middle platonism and neoplatonism, the Latin tradition; published in 1986), Roger A. Pack (A medieval critic of Macrobius’ cosmometrics; published in 1981), Alison Peden (Science and philosophy in Wales at the time of the Norman con-quest: a Macrobius manuscript from Llabadarn; published in 1981), among others. It highlights the primary issues that researchers have focused on when studying Macrobius's literary legacy, identifies the challenges in ana-lyzing his works, and acknowledges the contribution of English-speaking scholars to the global historiography.

Anushirvan Sasani often has a positive image in the stories narrated in Persian poetry and prose texts and is always described as a symbol of justice. However, in one of the Masnavis left over from the last centuries, Anushirvan is not only not just, but also a lustful king who tries to take possession of a chaste married woman by force and coercion. In this work, the pious woman, despite Anushirvan's many insistences, is not willing to go into his solitude. To the extent that out of necessity and in order to get rid of Anushirvan, she plucks out her own eyes and sends them to her, and it is after this incident that Anushirvan takes the path of regret and repentance; To the extent that out of necessity and rejection of Anushirvan, she takes out her eyes and sends them to him, and after that Anushirvan takes the path of repentance. This short poem is the work of an unknown poet named Khalil Shirazi, the oldest manuscript of which dates back to the middle of the 11th century AH and is preserved in the National Library of Iran. Some researchers believe that this Khalil Shirazi is the same Khalil Zargar Rashti, the court poet of Jamshid Khan Ishaqi in the 10th century and the owner of the missing Jamshidname...

9. «بَی رامشهر»، لقبی ساسانی در شاهنامه.

- Abstract
Scholars are slowly trying to re-edit the Shahnama and in this, they sometimes ask for help from pre-Islamic languages and documents. It is natural to find in the Shahnama reflections of the conditions of the Sassanid era and administrative terms common in that period. In this article, an attempt has been made to identify a Sasanian title, which seems not to have been recognized by the editors, by examining some letters from Sasanian kings or addressed to them, recorded in the Shahnama, in which several titles and epithets are repeated in a formulaic form. For this purpose, it has been tried to check the manuscripts of the Shahnama carefully and to show the origin of the title in the Sasanian documents. This title is "Bay rāmšahr", recorded in the best editions of the Shahnama, especially in Khaleghi's edition as "padrām-shahr". At the end of the discussion, an attempt has been made to prove that "mahast", which is repeated in the same letters next to "bay rāmšahr", again in a formulaic form, is nothing but a corruption of the term "mazdēsn". But this corruption is not from Ferdowsi or the scribes of the Shahnama. This happened most probably long before the composition of the Shahnama in the transmission of Sasanian documents to Arabic and Persian script and with the same form found its way to Abu Mansuri's and Ferdowsi's Shahnama. The purpose of the article is to reveal the problem of editions in the history of “The Tale of Ivan the Fool...” text by L.N. Tolstoy (1885–1886). The objective of the research is the reading, differentiation and analyzis of this work’s manuscripts saved in the the Manuscript Department of the Leo Tolstoy State Museum in Moscow and in the University of Chicago Library (USA). The scientific novelty lies in the fact that for the first time an integrated approach has been applied to the study of the history of the creation of the “Tale of Ivan the Fool...”, combining textual and literary (poetics, historical, literary and biographical contexts) areas of research. The author of the article comes to the conclusion that the early manuscripts did not have editions radically different from the main text, as it is considered to be a scientific tradition. The results of the research prove that the plot parts, the figurative system, visual and expressive means for the integral expression of the genre form of the idea — a social utopia in the kind of folk tale were consistently formed in the draft materials. The article emphasizes that folklore details (stories about the three brothers, about the victory of man over evil spirits) were the allegorical basis for the artistic presentation of the main theses of Tolstoy’s religious, philosophical and publicistic writings in the 1880s. These theses include the idea of non-resistance to evil by violence, criticism of the military strategy of states, the tax system of societies, the idea of enslaving the weak by the strong with the sword and money, glorification of agricultural labor, the antithesis of mental activity and physical labor in the history of mankind.

- Abstract
The objectives, subjects, and graduate profiles of postgraduate publishing programmes in the Ibero-American region are examined. The study analysed 16 postgraduate programmes at university institutions in Spain and Ibero-America and interviewed 109 people, including programme coordinators, graduates, and editorial directors. In terms of objectives, the results show that institutions prioritise improving the skills of professionals in the productive and commercial sectors. Publishing houses also offer training programmes to qualify and update the profile of publishers and standardise the publishing processes throughout the value chain. In terms of subjects, there is evidence of a preference for editorial processes through the use of ICT, which to some extent affects their professional performance. The graduate profile emphasises editors who are skilled in editorial processes, followed by administrative editors with ICT skills, entrepreneurs, and experts in editorial design. These findings confirm some of the assumptions of the project. Specifically, the training of editors is mainly focused on the creation of digital products. In addition, master's level training programmes at prioritise commercial needs, and technical training is prevalent in Ibero-America. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PIANO trios ,STRING quartets ,MODERN society ,TRIOS ,SONATA ,QUARTETS - Abstract
Leoš Janáček did not return to composing a string quartet until 1923, almost 45 years after his student composition for this instrumentation. The earlier Piano trio premiered in 1908 has direct relation with Quartet after Tolstoy's "Kreutzer sonata", but Janáček was not convinced of the Trio quality and destroyed it in 1923. However, some moments from the Trio could form the basis of the future quartet. Janáček composed the piece at the initiative of České kvarteto between October and November 1923 and then sent the score to the ensemble. Nonetheless, the first performance was not scheduled until 17 October 1924, when České kvarteto performed the piece at the Mozarteum in Prague. Subsequently, the score and parts were printed in Hudební matice of Umělecká beseda. Josef Suk, the second violinist of České kvarteto, made a significant contribution to the printed form of the composition. The material was published in 1925 and the first foreign performance -- critically acclaimed -- took place the same year at the festival of International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) in Venice. This study deals with the complicated genesis of the composition, Suk's changes and the principles of the forthcoming edition. Furthermore, it publishes a complete inventory of sources for the first time and describes them in detailed manner. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HOMELESSNESS , *EDITING , *PRECARITY , *CATHOLICS - Abstract
This article argues that the editorial history of Elizabeth Cary's letters has powerfully influenced how the letters are read and understood today. In particular, it suggests that an editorial organisation that cleaves to Cary's conversion has had a narrowing effect, straightjacketing the letters as "conversion writing" and underplaying the significances of texts actually enmeshed in a more expansive range of epistolary activity. The article forwards an alternative editorial strategy – a site-based method which allows for the consideration of Cary not only as a Catholic convert (an exceptional figure) but also as an early modern woman with companionate connections to other early modern writers deploying the epistolary form to address quotidian matters such as penury, precarity, homelessness and family breakdown. Dealing with the neglected issue of "extant-ness" throughout, the article argues that editors of early modern women's letters can be more explicit about the ways in which chance, contingency and curation influence that which survives. It makes a case for embracing "extant-ness" as a concept which might usefully undergird all epistolary enquiry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

19. 'God send vs þe dew of heuene' in Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Digby 172: A new edition of a Middle English-Latin lyric, with commentary.

Burns, Rachel A.
- Abstract
This article presents a new and extended edition of 'God send vs þe dew of heuene', with a full translation and commentary. This Middle English-Latin bilingual lyric of the fourteenth century is written haphazardly in the upper margin of Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Digby 172, fol. 55 r, and is annotated with alterations and variants indicative of compositional and perhaps compilational activity. Through literary analysis of the lyric's prosodic form and homiletic context, and through a careful assessment of its mise-en-page and palaeographic features, this article produces a dynamic edition which preserves the layers of accretion and revision present in the manuscript text. - Abstract
The editorial adventure of "Écrits Inédits" ("Unpublished Writings") ended with the publication, in Bulgaria, by Potaynitche editions, of a last essay on poetry, върху поезията, by Lubomir Guentchev. Ten titles had been published previously, in France, by Rafael de Surtis editions, between 2003 and 2020, in the collection of "Écrits Inédits" ("Unpublished Writings") by this Bulgarian poet condemned to silence and oblivion during the time of totalitarianism in Bulgaria. This author was however a very active translator, from Bulgarian into French and from French, as well as from German, into Bulgarian. He was also a great poet, in Bulgarian and in French, in the secret of his revolt. He left several lyrical dramas and essays on theater and poetry. Poetic creation was his profound vocation. The adventure of publishing his "Écrits Inédits" is a tribute to his creative sensibility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

When Poland regained independence in 1918, the different legal systems of the various partitioning states all remained in force on its territory. Drafts of uniform laws were to be drawn up by the Codification Commission established in 1919. One of its tasks was the preparation of a draft of the family and guardianship law. The sub-commission addressing this division of civil law worked until the outbreak of World War Two. The minutes of its sittings disappeared in September 1939 along with the total output of the Codification Commission. However, copies of minutes of the sittings of the subcommission held in 1939 were found in Kazimierz Przybyłowski's collection of books donated to the Faculty of Law and Administration of University of Silesia in Katowice. These minutes shed new light on the final phase of the codification works. Publication of these documents will enable further detailed research on the history of family law in interwar Poland. The fourth part of the publication consists of minutes nos. 197--201, and includes the reconstruction of articles 1--16, 40--58, and the draft of articles 59--78a as well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Samuel Butler ,Edition ,British Empire ,Sociology of texts ,New Zealand - Abstract
This thesis comprises a scholarly edition of Samuel Butler's satirical novel 'Erewhon; or, Over the Range' (1872). All prior editions and reprints of 'Erewhon' have positioned it squarely within the traditions of Menippean satire and British intellectual culture; this edition situates 'Erewhon' in its colonial context for the first time, stressing its debt to Butler's movement between the centre and margin of Britain's expanding empire. The General Introduction argues that Erewhon is a product of two experiences of Butler's early life: his education at Cambridge University from 1854-1858 and his sojourn in the Canterbury colony in New Zealand, as a pastoralist, from 1859-1864. Taking Butler's mistrust of logical reasoning as the central example, I examine how the conditions of colonial life provided a dynamic challenge to the intellectual framework of Butler's elite, localised liberal education. The Editorial Introduction carries an ancillary argument in favour of the first edition as copy-text. No previous edition of Erewhon has reproduced this text. Tracing the novel's complex compositional and publication history in relation to D. F. McKenzie's sociology of texts, I argue that the first edition is moulded by Butler's experiences at the imperial centre and periphery of empire, while subsequent editions are shaped by his later theories of art and evolution forged in England and Italy. My privileging of the first edition, and the manuscript from which it was forged, is reflected in the content and organisation of the scholarly apparatus, as explained in the Editorial Methods section. The apparatus includes a collation of variants between Butler's manuscript and the first edition; notes about the manuscript; collated variants from all print editions; and a comprehensive critical commentary designed to support a variety of scholarly interests, but also grounding the novel in the reciprocal flow of ideas between Cambridge and Canterbury in the mid-nineteenth century.

This research aim to describe a textological study of the issue of how the Hikayat Si Miskin manuscript text from the Harvad University - Houghton Library/ ms_Indo_18-METS collection was translated into handwritten Arabic-Malay script, the appearance of which is much different from the standard form of the letters of this script. This is the most important part in the textological study of the subfield of philology before the editing of texts from the old Malay Arabic-Malay script into Latin script is presented. His identity as the author is not included at the front of his work, but at the end of the manuscript called the colophon. The presentation of a text that has been cleaned of all writing errors paves the way for further study of the content of the text from various aspects related to the existence of the form and content of the text being studied, such as a study of the structural content of the text, a study of linguistic aspects, a study of social values. and culture, it is even possible to examine historical elements, because manuscripts are historical documents that describe the life systems and patterns of old society. The method used to discuss text issues and content that can be studied in various related scientific disciplines is the standard text criticism method, namely a philological method that attempts to re-present classical texts by criticizing and correcting corrupt texts. In accordance with the focus of the discussion which focuses on writing and visual text writing, the research results found writing irregularities and errors in writing lacunae, substitutions, additions, transpositions, dittography, and haplography. The most common writing errors are substitution errors.

- Abstract
Uyghurs who migrated to Ganzhou and Turfan regions after 840 established two new khaganates. In this region, in which religious and ethnic diversity is dominant, the Uyghurs have given importance to commercial activities. Thus, they have adopted a settled lifestyle. Linguistic data about the life of the Uyghurs can be found especially in nonreligious Old Uyghur texts, which contain an extensive vocabulary on architectural structures, interior and exterior structural elements, building materials, carrier systems, public spaces, agricultural areas, and irrigation structures. These texts point toward the settled lifestyle of the Uyghurs. In addition, Buddhist pilgrimage centers, important cities, religious buildings, and mystically divine palaces are occasionally mentioned in the Old Uyghur religious texts on Buddhist themes. This article focuses on the edition of seven Old Uyghur fragments related to Buddhism, which have not been previously published. The fragments primarily address topics such as the city, palace, and army. The Berlin Turfan Collection houses the fragments included in this work, which are identified through archival numbers U 2077 (o. F.), U 2301 (T I D), U 2316 (T I D 505; T I D), U 5465 (T I D 622), U 2418 (T II 530), U 2332 (T I D 526; T I D), and U 4868 (T I D 643; T I D). MEDIEVAL manuscripts , *DEVIL , *ROMAN law , *LATIN literature , *HUMAN beings , *COPYING - Abstract
The study presents an editio princeps of a Medieval Latin dialogue between Christ and the Devil over the salvation of humankind. The text is entitled Argumenta, que fecit diabolus Christo pendenti in cruce ad probandum, quod non debebat redimere genus humanum [The reasons the Devil offered Christ, while he was on the cross, to prove that he should not redeem humankind], and has so far only been known in a single manuscript (Vatican City, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Vat. Lat. 10499, fol. 37r–39r). This edition includes two newly discovered manuscript witnesses: ms. Olomouc, Vědecká knihovna, M I 358, formerly owned by the Carthusains in Olomouc, and ms. Praha, Národní knihovna, I E 37, fol. 13r–14r, copied by an active scribe and collector Crux of Telč (1434–1504), probably in the late 1460s while he was a preacher in Plzeň (Pilsen). The latter manuscript provides a note to preachers – an important proof of the use of the text in sermons, which is further confirmed by yet another version preserved in ms. Firenze, Biblioteca Riccardiana, Ricc. 308, fol. 33r–33v, which also includes a version of the text among sermons. It is closer to the Prague manuscript, but orders and phrases some of the arguments rather differently and had already been made available through a published transcription, so it is not included in the present edition. This study was conducted with the aim of determining the diagnostic validity of the fifth edition of Wechsler's intelligence scales for children in the neuropsychological characteristics of students with learning disabilities in Tehran. The present study was subset of methodological studies. The number of 400 people with learning disabilities who were selected using a targeted and available sampling method and 400 normal people who were randomly selected from among all male and female students between the ages of 7 and 11 in Tehran in the academic year of 2018-2019. In line with the purpose of the research, the fifth edition of the Wechsler Children's Intelligence Scales (2014) was used. The collected data were analyzed using logistic regression analysis and SPSS software (Version 23). The study finally revealed that vocabulary and information tests (from verbal comprehension index), Block design with time point (from Visualspatial index),arithmetic (from fluid reasoning scale), number span (direct), number span (reverse), picture span, letter-digit sequencing and letter-number sequencing (from working memory scale),and coding, cancellation (random), cancellation (structural), (from Processing speed index), had diagnostic validity. The fifth version of the Wechsler IQ Scales for children has diagnostic validity in the neuropsychological characteristics of students with learning disabilities and can distinguish students with learning disabilities from normal students. AbstractOne of the most important components in editing ancient texts is paying attention to the different forms and readings of words and phrases and studying the semantics of each of these possible forms. In the meanwhile, recognizing the correct recording of Arabic words entered in Persian language requires more care and investigation because these words often get more distorted due to the strangeness of their uses. In addition, some of these words have two or more different meanings in the original language and have this feature in the second language as well. However, the editor's neglect of these multiple meanings and readings can impair the recording and description of words and phrases. The less commonly used word "Ofāt/Afãt" is an example of the same words used in a verse of Sanā’ie's Hadiqat al-Haqiqa, but it has been incorrectly recorded in all contemporary scientific and critical editions. In this research, first, besides criticizing the corrections and explanations of Hadiqat al-Haqiqa, the correct recording of the word and verse was examined and then, a semantic analysis of it was presented by considering the double readings of the word and how it was used in other texts. IntroductionThe first and most basic step in editing ancient Persian texts is to scrutinize the different forms and readings of words and expressions used in the texts. This review requires a detailed semantic knowledge of the lexical system of language. In the meanwhile, recognizing the correct recording of words entered from Arabic language requires more precision and research. Some of these words have different readings in the original language and have consequently found various semantic uses in Persian language. Undoubtedly, the editors’ and researchers’ ignorance of these multiple readings and meanings cause problems in the recording and description of the words and even verses or phrases related to them. In this article, the correct reading and recording of one of these words (Ofāt/Afãt) in a verse of Sanã'ie Ghaznavi's Hadiqat al-Haqiqa was investigated. Materials & MethodsIn this research, by using library sources and taking advantage of intratextual and intertextual evidence and reasons, a verse and a word (Ofāt/Afãt) from Hadiqah al-Haqiqa were corrected and a comprehensive semantic analysis waas presented for them. Also, while examining the use of this word in other texts, such as Mas’ud-e Sa’d's Divãn, the inconsistency of the selected semantic aspects of the authors’ dictionaries and commentators of the text with the way the word was used in the text was criticized. Discussion of Results & ConclusionsIn this research, based on the recording of some authentic and old manuscripts and using textual reasons and evidence, as well as lexical research, we showed that the rarely used word of "Ofāt/Afãt" was used in a verse of Hadiqat al-Haqiqa. However, in Modarres Razavi's edition, the correct form of the word was marginalized and in Yāhaghi and Zarqāni’s editions, the correct recording of old manuscripts was misread and distorted. Most of the commentators of Hadiqa had also chosen and explained the wrong form following the recording of Modarres Razavi and none of them had understood its correct form and various readings and consequently the exact meaning of the verse. Despite keeping the correct form of the word, Abdul Latif Abbãsi had presented a wrong and disproportionate meaning of it. In addition to the above points, another use of this word with a different meaning was mentioned in Mas’ud-e Sa’d's Divãn in this research. In the latter case, the interpreters of the text and the authors of the dictionaries had a wrong understanding of the meaning of the mentioned word. The results of this research once again revealed the scientific fact that neglecting the multiple readings and meanings of words can cause errors by editors and commentators, while providing the correct recording and detailed semantic analysis of one of the entered words.

Having long cultivated the image of a ‘provincial gongorist’, Robert Jammes nevertheless chose to publish the last and definitive edition of Góngora’s Solitudes, in 2017, with Éditions Rue d’Ulm, at the École Normale Supérieure, the institution he had joined in 1947. Our contribution provides some elements for reading this gesture in the light of the tensions with the Parisian university that marked Robert Jammes throughout his life.

This thesis provides a critical edition of the longest extant version of the medieval Irish text Tochmarc Ferbe ('The Wooing of Ferb'), accompanied by translation, textual notes and literary commentary. Tochmarc Ferbe is found in two manuscripts, the Book of Leinster (LL) and Egerton 1782. This comprises three versions of the text: a short prose account in Egerton 1782, and a long prosimetric account in LL, followed in the same manuscript by a poetic account. After a preliminary analysis of the relationship between these three versions, the edited text of the long prosimetric version (LL-prose) is presented, alongside a facing-page translation. Issues arising from the text, in terms of interpretational difficulties, literary features and metrical analysis of the poems, are discussed in the form of textual notes. A particular focus is the prevalence of textual correspondences between Tochmarc Ferbe and other medieval Irish tales, many of which are identified as direct textual borrowings by the author of this text. The thesis concludes with a literary commentary focusing on the role of women in the LL-prose version. It is argued that its depictions of a wide range of female characters challenge traditional assumptions about medieval Irish attitudes towards women, which tend to focus on their supposed passivity and negativity. The portrayals of two female characters are singled out as especially noteworthy. Queen Medb, frequently viewed as the archetypal expression of negative attitudes towards power-wielding women in medieval Irish literature, is shown to receive a positive depiction in this text. Meanwhile, the main female protagonist Ferb is characterised by her use of speech, which dominates the text in a manner almost unparalleled in medieval Irish literature. It is argued that she subverts the usually passive role of lamenter by channelling her grief into an active force, offering an alternative model of positive female action.

In this brief interview, the French historian Roger Chartier (Lyon, 1945) covers a series of concepts related to three of the major areas to which he has devoted most of his academic work over the last four decades. The first deals with the figure of the author and in it a conceptual arc is authenticated that goes from new technologies applied to literary production and changes in authorial models to a return to the classics. The second axis focuses on the book as a support for texts and is an attempt to cover the different materialities of said object (physical, electronic or audiobook books). The third axis, in this case a single broad question, reflects the relationships between the historiographical and literary sciences, how they intersect, and ways to approach the historicity of texts. The Pandects, an anthology of passages from the Holy Scripture and the writings of the Church Fathers, was compiled in Medieval Greek in around 620 by Antiochus, a monk of the Laura of Mar Saba, at the request of hegumen Eustachius of the Monastery of Atalina. In the 10th century, this collection was translated into the Church Slavonic language in Bulgaria and soon became known in Kyivan Rus’. No later than in the 1160s, fragments of the Pandects were included in the Synaxarion or the Prologue, a calendar collection of the lives of saints and sermons. The didactic part of the Expanded edition of the Prologue was supplemented for the first half of the year with 21 carefully edited passages from the Pandects. During the 14th‒17th centuries, scribes revised the translation of the Pandects again. The subject of this study is the new versions of the Pandects of Antiochus in comparison with the traditional synaxarian sermons from this source. When examining about 100 copies of the Prologue from the autumn-winter half of the church year, dating back to the 14th‒17th centuries, 6 such articles were found. In the Moscow and Kirill-Belozersky editions of the Prologue, which belong to the Moscow literary tradition, I found two new versions (A Sermon on Fasting and on Prayer, A Sermon on if one Loves the World). The fragments of the Pandects were copied from the source in their entirety, without introducing significant changes. In the manuscript tradition of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL), and later also of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (PLC), more new variants of the sermons appeared. In the Navahrudak edition, in the two varieties of the Expanded edition and in the Museum edition, four traditional Prologue articles were edited (A Sermon on Eloquence, A Sermon on Dreams, A Sermon on Fasting and on Prayer, A Sermon on if one Loves the World). The writers used a special technique of segmenting the sermons and amending their style. It is possible to conclude that the 10th century translation of the work of monk Antiochus underwent a greater transformation in the literary tradition of the GDL than in the Grand Duchy of Moscow. Ukrainian scribes played a special role in the reception of the Pandects of Antiochus in the lands of the GDL and later in the PLC.

45. The issue of the genre of Kolyma stories by Varlam Shalamov and its editions in Polish

The article discusses the translations and the history of publishing of Kolyma stories in Poland, from the first underground booklets released in the 1980s’, which contained merely a dozen or so stories selected from the famous London publication, Колымские рассказы [Kolyma stories], published by Mikhail Geller in 1978. They were the first presentations of the work. Thus, for translators, it was essential that such important pieces reached Polish readers as quickly as possible, at least in excerpts. One of the translators, Stefan Wodnik (born Adam Bal), took on the task of rendering a significantly larger selection of the stories accessible, but it was still not the entirety. In the introduction, he offered an interpretation of Shalamov’s work, combined with a justification of his translational choices, including the necessity to change the order of many of the stories in relation to their London original. It was only the next translator, engineer Juliusz Baczyński, who had not up until then been professionally involved in translation, who rendered the entire London volume. In Poland, it is still considered the full translation of Kolyma stories by Varlam Shalamov, although, as we know today, it diverges significantly from the author’s version in terms of the selection and organisation of individual stories. His translation was very highly regarded by, among others, Gustaw Herling-Grudziński, a distinguished writer and prominent expert in Gulag literature and the works of Shalamov.

This aim of this issue is to reflect on the multiple ways in which a so-called “literary” text can circulate among its various audiences over time. Building on a broad definition of the notion of “publication”, the issue pays attention to the “life of the works”—whose identity is often intermedial or plurimedial. By combining poetic, aesthetic and sociological approaches, it intends to work towards the sharing of tools useful for the study of “literary” activities and works, in all their diversity, bring together disciplines and traditions interested in these activities and works.

Editing the correspondence between George Seferis and Ioanna Seferiadi (1919-1924), published in 2021, gave rise to some considerations about the editing process for this type of personal documents in particular. With the aim of providing a real picture of the reality of the manuscript, in these pages we will explain the options proposed, why in the end orthographic update was chosen, to what extent this has been applied and finally which elements have been altered, which remain unaltered, and why. In addition, we try to justify our decisions based on the different positions and arguments used by experts on this subject. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
