Human cystic echinococcosis (CE) is the most prevalent disease in Europe, and probably accounts for more than 95% of the estimated 2-3 million global cases. CE is a fatal and serious disease. Turkey is among the countries where this problem still poses a public threat. This study was a pilot study to create the awareness of CE among 10 different districts of Izmir province, Turkey. Awareness raising seminars are essential component of this study for students and schoolteachers. Questionnaire forms were created and applied before and after the presentations. Printed materials, posters and brochures were disseminated and posters put on the walls or boards where students can see continuously. Even 4090 students attended to the trainings, questionnaires were filled by 3793 of the students. Out of 3793 students, 1978 (52.1%) were female and 1815 (47.9%) were male. The majority of students (94.2%) did not know anything about this disease. 93.1% students were stated that there were stray dogs in their environment. More than half of the students were playing with stray dogs. Nearly 90% of the students answered correctly the questions which were asked after presentation. The total number of administrators and teachers who attended to the seminars were 242. This is the first pilot study regarding creating awareness on CE in the Izmir Province, Turkey that covers the big sample-size of children including schoolteachers. This study helped them understand the importance of the problem and how it can be solved by protecting themselves while respecting human and animal rights. It will be used for establishing nationwide control programme., Kistik ekinokokkozis (KE), Avrupa'da çok yaygın bir hastalıktır ve dünyada yaklaşık 2-3 milyon olgunun % 95'inden fazlasını oluşturmaktadır. 3793 öğrencinin 1978'i (% 52.1) kız, 1815'i (% 47.9) erkektir. Öğrencilerin çoğunluğu (% 94,2) bu hastalık hakkında hiçbir şey bilmiyordu. Öğrencilerin % 93,1'i çevrelerinde başıboş köpek olduğunu ve yarısından fazlası da sokak köpekleriyle oynadıklarını bildirmiştir. Sunum sonrasında sorulan soruları öğrencilerin yaklaşık % 90'ı doğru yanıtlamıştır. Seminerlere katılan yönetici ve öğretmenlerin toplam sayısı 242'dir. Bu çalışma, İzmir ilinde okul öğretmenleri de dahil olmak üzere çocukların büyük örneklemini kapsayan KE konusunda farkındalık yaratmaya yönelik ilk pilot çalışmadır. Bu çalışma, sorunun önemini, insan ve hayvan haklarına saygı göstererek kendilerini korumayı nasıl yapabileceklerini anlamalarına yardımcı olmuştur. Ülke çapında uygulanması planlanan kontrol programı oluşturmak için kullanılacaktır.

- Abstract

Generation Y and Z are individuals who are integrated with technology. In addition to benefiting from the product while consuming, they also attach importance to the pleasure of having that product. This pleasure sometimes comes from consumption itself, but at the same time it is important to make the individual a part of a certain group. Some of the personal causes of hedonic consumption are emotions (entertainment, need to get rid of troubles, buying cheap products, etc.). Consumers want to benefit from a product while also enjoying it. In this study, similar studies that have been done before were examined and the concept of generations in the first part and the concept of pleasure and hedonism in the second part and the consumer behaviors related to them are were explained. In the fourth part of the study, brand loyalty and related concepts, brand trust and brand satisfaction were tried to be explained. In the last section the data obtained from the surveys were analyzed using factor analysis and structural equation modeling methods with the help of SPSS and AMOS programs. According to the results of the research it was found that there is a positive correlation between hedonic consumption and brand trust, brand satisfaction and brand loyalty and utilitarian consumption.

Necessity of water increases day by day together with increasing population and industrialization as parallel to the global climate change. When it is thought that the important part (%69,5) of freshwater resources which only %25 of existing water on the world is on glaciers, idea that increasing water demand turned into a water in the next 20-25 years becomes common. The main purpose of the management of water sources is sustainability. A system which considers requirements of today and future without creating permanent damage on the sources and changing the functioning of the hydrological system is determined. At the present time irrigation is managed by irrigation association, irrigation cooperatives, municipalities or legal entities of villages in Turkey. Irrigation is managed by irrigation cooperatives in accordance with the cooperatives law 1163. Irrigation cooperatives are nonprofit organizations founded by members of a group farmer who think the interests of all shoreholders. The organisations aim properly carry out irrigation service. The material of this study was abtained from producers are associated to irrigation cooperatives in Tekirdağ. In this context, interviews were had with 70 producers in searching area. For definitive diagnosis of amoebiasis, The Ministry of Health requires the detection of Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica) trophozoites that ingested red blood cells in Trichrome-stained smears or E. histolytica-specific adhesin antigen with ELISA. Stool samples of 51 patients admitted to the Outpatients Clinic of Ege University School of Medicine Department of Parasitology between January 2010 and June 2011 were suspected to have E. histolytica/dispar cysts or trophozoites in wet mount examinations and stained with Trichrome. Examination of these smears revealed that 49 samples were positive for E. histolytica/dispar Thirty-three samples were tested for the positivity of E. histolytica-specific adhesin antigen with a commercial ELISA kit (Entamoeba CELISA-Path; CeLLabs Pty. Ltd., Brookvale, Australia) and 23 were found to be positive. Our results indicated an elevation of figures of amoebiasis cases in recent years. It is concluded that application of different methods for the diagnosis of E. histolytica infections as suggested by The Ministry of Health is essential for correct reports of peripheral laboratories. RecDipol’un spesifik epitoplar içeren gen bölgelerinden oluşmasına rağmen KE hastalarının başlangıç kanlarında KS’na oranla daha fazla negatif sonuçlar elde edilmesi, recDipol’un tanı ve hasta takibindeki performansının sınırlılığı olarak değerlendirilmiştir., Cystic Echinococcosis (CE) is a neglected zoonotic infection caused by the metasestod stage of Echinococcus granulosus. CE is an important public health problem that is affecting people in all age groups and appears to be endemic in many countries including Turkey. Clinical findings and imaging methods are primarily used in the diagnosis, however, synchronous use of imaging methods and serological tests in early diagnosis of the disease, clinical and epidemiological reserach will be a standard approach. Hydatid fluid (HF) is used as the main antigenic resource for serological diagnosis. Standardization of HF antigens is considerably difficult. This causing different sensitivity and specificity results in different laboratories. The recurrence rate of CE is 2-25% after surgical and medical treatment. Besides, long-term persistence of antibodies in circulation against HF is another problem in follow-up. Recently, promising results have been reported about recombinant antigens. According to immunoproteom analysis, immunodominant epitopes change from one cyst stage (according to World Health Organization (WHO) classification) to another and antigens are required that including multiple defined immunodominant epitopes. For this purpose, multiepitope recombinant peptide antigen (recDipol) was obtained by sequential cloning of immunodominant epitopes belong to AgB1, AgB2 and Ag5. Diagnosis performance of recDipol and HF was compared with 149 CE patients who had surgery or Percutaneous- Aspiration- Injection- Respiration (PAIR) procedure, and 70 control groups (49 patients with other parasitic infections and 21 healthy individuals) using the IgG-ELISA method. Besides, 28 patients were followed up with Ultrasonography and serological methods for varying periods (6-36 months). Sera samples of 20 patients with genotype analysis were analyzed in the termf of relationship with genotypic diversity and immune response using IgG-ELISA method. The sensitivity of HF and recDipol were evaluated as 82,55% and 78,52%, while specificity was 91,43% ve 95,71%, respectively. While the sensitivity of HF antigen is higher than recDipol in the active (CE1 and CE2) and transition (CE3A and CE3B) stage, recDipol showed very high seropositivity in the inactive (CE4 and CE5) cysts. The relationship with the sensitivity of recDipol and cyst stage was statistically meaningful (P = 0. 041). Out of 28 follow up patients, 1 (3,5%) with HF and 6 (21,4%) with recDipol were evaluated seronegative during the whole follow-up. In addition, seronegativeization was observed in 5 (17,85%) patients with HF antigen and in 6 (21,42%) patients with recDipol at the end of follow-up. Serological Indeks (SI) value of increased one patient who has the possibility of recurrence at the end of the follow-up period with both antigens. 20 patients with genotype analysis (16 G1, 1 G2, 2 G3 and 1 G1/3) were analyzed using IgG-ELISA. All patients except the G1 genotype were seropositive against both antigens, While 87,5% of patients in the G1 genotype were seropositive with HF and 75% with recDipol. As a result, promising results were obtained with recDipol antigen especially in the diagnosis of inactive (CE4 and CE5) cysts and specificity. Although recDipol consists of gene regions containing specific epitopes, negative results in the initial blood of CE patients were evaluated as the limited performance of recDipol in diagnosis and follow-up patients.

- Abstract
Objective: The follow-up of patients with cystic echinococcosis (CE) offers the opportunity of evaluating the prognosis of the infection as well as detecting relapse. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the new multiepitope recombinant peptide (recDipol) antigen in the follow-up of CE patients treated by surgery or percutaneous aspiration injection respiration., Methods: A total of 137 blood samples from 28 patients were evaluated by IgG-ELISA method using recDipol and hydatid fluid (HF) antigens. The patients were simultaneously checked for recurrence by ultrasonography., Results: The seropositivity rate of the 28 patients varied considerably during the follow-up. When the first blood of the patients was evaluated, 4 (14.28%) were seronegative by HF-ELISA and 9 (32.14%) were recDipol-ELISA. During the entire follow-up, only 1 (3.5%) and 6 (21.4%) patients were seronegative by HF-ELISA and recDipol ELISA, respectively., Conclusion: We found that recDipol did not perform as expected in the follow-up due to the higher number of seronegative patients compared to HF-ELISA in the first blood and during the entire follow-up. Our results suggest that imaging methods are gold standards in the diagnosis and that, in parallel, longer-term patient follow-up is required with recombinant antigens that have an improved diagnostic performance.

- Abstract
Objective: Scabies is diagnosed based on the presence of burrows on the skin, Sarcoptes scabiei adult, egg, or scybala in skin scrapings. The laboratory diagnosis of scabies poses various challenges. We aimed to compare the analytical performance of skin scraping and standard superficial skin biopsy (SSSB) and to investigate the correlation with false negative results in the laboratory diagnosis of scabies., Methods: Skin scraping and SSSB were applied from July 1 to December 31, 2018 on 42 patients whose burrows were marked using dermatoscopy, as obtained from the laboratory information system., Results: The number of patients who tested positive for scabies with skin scraping was 18 (42.9%) and 24 (57.1%) with SSSB, and the difference was significant (p=0.003). Sensitivity was 42.9% for skin scraping and 57.1% for SSSB. The number of positive cases with both techniques was 15 (35.7%). The number of patients positive with only skin scraping was 3 (7.1%) and only SSSB was 9 (21.4%)., Conclusion: To date, it has seemed impossible to diagnose scabies using a single clinical or laboratory test. According to our results, SSSB is an inexpensive and easy-to-apply method with high sensitivity for obtaining skin samples for scabies laboratory diagnosis.

- Abstract
Objective: Blastocystosis has been linked with non-specific symptoms, such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and distention. In this study, we evaluated the relationship between Blastocystis spp. with urticaria and intestinal symptoms., Methods: The results of the stool examinations of the patients who were referred to Ege University Medical Faculty Hospital's Medical Parasitology Department Direct Diagnosis Laboratory with gastrointestinal (GIS) and/or dermatologic symptoms between January 2011 and July 2016 were retrospectively scanned., Results: Of the evaluated 37108 stool samples, 2573 (6.93 %) were identified to be positive for Blastocystis spp. The patients with gastrointestinal complaints comprised 68.4% of Blastocystis spp. positive samples (1.761 samples) while 30.1% of patients had dermatologic symptoms (urticaria) (776 samples). Blastocystis spp. density in the non-amplified (without using any stool concentration technique) stool samples of the patients with GIS and dermatological symptoms was as follows: 2.47%, 1.35% rare, 21.73%, 22.17% few, 49.65%, 54.29% medium, 26.27%, and 22.17% dense, respectively., Conclusion: 75.92% and 76.46% of the patients with GIS and dermatological complaints had medium to dense parasite densities in their stool samples respectively. This suggests a positive correlation between parasite density and GIS and dermatologic symptomatology.

- Abstract
Travel is important in the spread of diseases, and the number of travelers is increasing daily. Therefore, the importance of the diseases that occur during or after travel is increasing. In underdeveloped countries in particular, parasitic diseases are epidemic or endemic, and these diseases lead to high numbers of deaths. People traveling from developed to underdeveloped countries have a higher risk of transmission of parasitic diseases during travel. Fifteen percent of the world's population lives in Africa. In terms of geography, economics, and development, the continent is divided into four regions: East Africa, South Africa, North Africa, and West Africa. In recent years, international travels to Africa have been increasing. During these travels, there is a risk of contracting parasitic diseases, such as malaria, schistosomiasis, trypanosomiasis (African sleeping disease), onchocerciasis, lymphatic filariasis, and leishmaniasis. Before traveling to Africa, it is vital to take measures against diseases in the region.

- Abstract
Over the past decade, the number of international travels has increased. Hence, the risk of transmission of parasitic diseases has also increased. One of the risk infections is malaria; Plasmodium vivax and P. falciparum species can be transmitted. The distribution of leishmaniasis cases has been reported from the south of USA to the north of Argentina. Approximately 57,000 cases of cutaneous and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis occur annually, and approximately 4000 visceral leishmaniasis cases are observed. It is reported that Chagas disease is endemic in 21 countries, and approximately 6 million people are affected every year. In this continent, 25 million people are at a risk of schistosomiasis, and most (90%) are living in Brazil. According to the World Health Organization, individuals travelling to Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Guatemala, Mexico, and Venezuela are at a risk of onchocerciasis as well as infecting approximately 12.6 million individuals with lymphatic filariasis (80% in Haiti). Significant mortality and morbidity can be observed in cases where necessary precautions are not taken in individuals travelling to these regions and where appropriate prophylactic drugs are not administered.

- Abstract
Travel-related health problems have been reported in 22-64% of travelers to developing countries. Approximately 8% of these patients are moderately ill and are referred to health facilities. Post-travel infections are usually symptomatic in the early stages, but they may last for up to months or even years, depending on the incubation period. It has been reported that it is not necessary to have extensive knowledge on tropical diseases to be able to make a clinical evaluation after the trip. All post-travel consultations should be performed by physicians and should include travel-related illness identification, timely medical intervention, and, if necessary, referral to a senior hospital. Situations that should be taken into consideration by physicians when evaluating a possible patient with travel-related health problems are as follows: the severity of illness, the route travelled, the time between illness and travel, the underlying disease, vaccine and prophylaxis history, and exposure history. The most common clinical syndromes after travel to developing countries are systemic febrile illness, acute diarrhea, dermatological disorders, respiratory disorders, and eosinophilia. This review summarizes the approach to possible clinical situations among returned travelers.

- Abstract
In the last decades, there has been a significant increase in international human mobility with increase in the prosperity, travel possibilities, and number of refugees. In the first half of 2016, the Asian continent showed the fastest growth in the number of tourists. Such increase is seen due to the interest in Asian history, culture, and cuisine. In the globalizing world, human mobility causes changes in the epidemiology of diseases and the spread of various infections across continents. Parasitic infections that may pose a risk for travellers to the Asia-Pacific are malaria, leishmaniasis, filariasis, foodborne trematode infections, schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted infections, and tourist diarrhea. Consulting a travel medical expert and using health services such as pre-travel vaccination and chemoprophylaxis will reduce the risk of infectious diseases among travelers.
