Objective:This study aims to assess preoperative anxiety among surgical patients.Method:This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at the Dr. Suat Gunsel University of Kyrenia Hospital and Near East University Hospital from October 2020 toJanuary 2021. A total of 81 patients voluntarily participated in this study. Data were collected by Personal Information Form and Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale. Descriptive statistics, Student’s t-test, Mann–Whitney U Test, Kruskal–Wallis test, and post hoc test were used to compare the data, while Pearson’s correlation was used to evaluate the correlation between the continuous variables.Results:The average Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale anxiety level was found to be 10.6 ± 6.5, the average scores of Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale sub-dimensions were 4.9 ± 2.5 for anesthesia-related anxiety, 5.6 ± 2.4 for anxiety about the surgery, and 6.1 ± 2.4 for the information desire. The result of the study showed that there was a statistically significanct relationship between gender and the patient’s level of preoperative anxiety among preoperative surgical patients.Conclusion:Based on the results of the study, it may be recommended to assess the patient’s anxiety and provide appropriate and necessary information.

Objective:The aim of this study is to determine the pain assessment and management practices of surgical and critical care nurses.Method:This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at Specialist Hospital Sokoto in March 2021. A total of 148 surgical and critical care nurses voluntarily participated in this study. Data were collected using questionnaires. The statistical analysis was performed by Statistical Package for Social Science. Descriptive statistics were used in data analysis.Results:The result of the study showed that nurses had a high level of awareness of all domains of pain assessment and management practices; however, the barriers to practice were too high.Conclusion:Based on the results of the study, development of policies to ensure that pain scores and management are discussed during handling and taking over ward rounds, continuous education, providing any course/training on surgical pain management, and assessment to improve nurses’ knowledge and practices.

Innovation makes contributions to the patient care process, work order, and the speedup of development. Innovative products consist of technological tools for preventing illnesses, reducing the time of hospitalization, increasing patient comfort, and making the care professional. Florence Nightingale emphasized the need for using innovative products saying “We should change life instead of complying with it” and gave place to important transformations in health. While determining the technology they will use in the care of surgical patients, nurses should actualize the care practices paying attention to these practices being applicable, employable, and creditable and their legal and ethical aspects. Innovative technology is used in many areas of surgery, and this fact propounds the importance of innovation in surgical care. Studies in which innovative practices are applied in nursing are insufficient in our country. For this reason, it is thought that innovative practices in nursing need to be developed. In this review, it is aimed to draw attention to the necessity and importance of innovation in nursing.

Objective:Healthcare associated infections are any infections that do not occur during the incubation period and which develop within 48–72 hours after the patient has stayed in the hospital, or within 10 days after discharge from the hospital. In this study, we aimed to determine the level of knowledge of nursing students regarding prevention of healthcare associated infections.Method:The population of the study consisted of 667 student nurses who studied in the nursing department of a university. The data were obtained from 506 students who accepted to participate in the study between May 13 and 17, 2016. In the study, a questionnaire form titled “Determination of Knowledge Levels of Nurses about Prevention of Hospital Infections” developed by the researcher was used.Results:The mean score of knowledge that the nursing students had regarding prevention of healthcare-associated infections was 54.28 ± 11.16, the hand hygiene knowledge score was 16.05 ± 4.48, and the mean score of surgical site infections was 5.53 ± 2.42. As seen in the factors affecting the mean scores for the students’ knowledge on the prevention of nosocomial infections, it was determined that the mean score of the third-grade students (56.29) was higher than the other averages (p < .05).Conclusion:It was determined that the mean knowledge scores of the student nurses about preventing healthcare associated infections were moderate and that their mean knowledge scores on surgical site infections were low.

Objective: To determine the opinions of nursing students on ageism and their thoughts regarding working with elderly individuals after graduation.Methods: This descriptive study was conducted in the academic year 2014–2015 and included 175 student volunteers, of whom 114 were firstgrade students and 61 were fourth-grade students studying in the Nursing Department, School of Health Sciences, Near East University. The Personal Information Form and Ageism Attitude Scale (AAS) were used for collecting data, which were assessed using the SPSS 20.0 statistics package program (Statistical Package of Social Sciences, v. 20.0 Chicago, IL, USA). The chi-square test was used for cross tables, and the t-test was used for comparing two-choice questions of the scale in the independent groups; single direction variance analysis was used for analyzing variables with more than one choice.Results: The attitudes of students in terms of elderly discrimination were positive, and the average AAS score was 79.56±9.39. Plaster casts have been used in the treatment of fractures since 1850, and they play an important role in the healing of extremity injuries and operative repairs. Despite the high incidence of fractures and the widespread use of plaster casts in patients with fractures, the quality of counseling in patients with plaster casts has been neglected. There are few studies on the quality of this patient advisement and the nonmedical experiences of patients with plaster casts. We believe that understanding the feelings, thoughts, and experiences of patients who have had plaster casts will contribute to holistic patient care and will guide the planning of such care. The aim of this study was to describe some of the nonmedical experiences of being in a plaster cast and to illustrate these difficulties through patient quotes. This qualitative research study used a qualitative, descriptive approach guided by phenomenology to explore and describe the subjective experiences of patients with plaster casts. Participants consisted of 10 patients with lower extremity fractures, all of whom had been in a plaster cast for at least 6 weeks. Data were collected through in-depth individual interviews using semistructured questionnaires. The content analysis method was used to analyze the data. COREQ (Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research) was used in structuring and reporting the study. Six themes that described the experiences of patients with a plaster cast were determined in the study. These themes were the basic physiological and functional concern, self-image challenges, social roles, dependence/independence, emotions, and the experience of being in a plaster cast. We determined that many aspects of the lives of patients had been affected by being in a plaster cast and that they had experienced not only physiological issues but also psychological, social, emotional, and aesthetic issues. In addition, all the participants stated that they sought solutions to these issues by requesting support from a person or persons around them. Understanding the experiences of individuals with a plaster cast will contribute to the holistic healthcare of individuals who suffer fractures, allowing it to be more patient-centered.
