Background: Phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) germline mutations are associated with cancer syndromes (PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome; PHTS) and in pediatric patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and macrocephaly. The exact prevalence of PTEN mutations in patients with ASD and macrocephaly is uncertain; with prevalence rates ranging from 1% to 17%. Most studies are retrospective and contain more adult than pediatric patients, there is a need for more prospective pediatric studies. Methods: We recruited 131 patients (108 males, 23 females) with ASD and macrocephaly between the ages of 3 and 18 from five child and adolescent psychiatry clinics in Turkey from July 2018 to December 2019. We defined macrocephaly as occipito--frontal HC size at or greater than 2 standard deviations (SD) above the mean for age and sex on standard growth charts. PTEN gene sequence analysis was performed using a MiSeq next generation sequencing (NGS) platform, (Illumina). Conclusion: PTEN gene sequence analyses identified three pathogenic/likely pathogenic mutations [NM_000314.6; p.(Pro204Leu), (p.Arg233*) and novel (p.Tyr176Cys*8)] and two variants of uncertain significance (VUS) [NM_000314.6; p.(Ala79Thr) and c.*10del]. We also report that patient with (p.Tyr176Cys*8) mutation has Grade 1 hepatosteatosis, a phenotype not previously described. This is the first PTEN prevalence study of patients with ASD and macrocephaly in Turkey and South Eastern Europe region with a largest homogenous cohort. The prevalence of PTEN mutations was found 3.8% (VUS included) or 2.29% (VUS omitted). We recommend testing for PTEN mutations in all patients with ASD and macrocephaly., PTEN Research [IBU-17-001], PTEN Research, Grant/Award Number: IBU-17-001.

Lactic acid bacteria species naturally present in fish (Streptococcus spp., Lactobacillus brevis, Lactobacillus plantarum, Pediococcus acidilactici and Enterococcus gallinarum) and formic acid were compared for production of fish silage, which are protein hydrolysates with immune stimulating properties. It is the first report for Enterococcus gallinarum to be used for producing fermented products. In this study, chemical and microbiological qualities of fish silage by acid or fermented methods were assessed after ripening of silages. It was observed that ripening was completed in maximum two weeks for all silage groups. Then, acid and fermented fish silage were spray dried and analysed for chemical and nutritional properties. As results of the study, these bacteria can be used as starter cultures in fermented products, especially for fish silage. In respect to essential/nonessential amino acid ratio (E/NE), the best groups among the spray-dried fish silages were prepared with formic acid, Lb. plantarum and Pd. acidilactici, respectively. Total antioxidant activity (TAO) of spray-dried fish silage was compared with ascorbic acid and TAO of spray-dried fish silages was found in range of 1.92 - 2.86 mg AA/g. The highest DPPH (diphenylpicrylhydrazyl) radical-scavenging ability of spray-dried fish silages was detected in AC group produced with Pediococcus acidilactici (20.26%) and GL group produced with Enterococcus gallinarum (16.95%), but there were no significant differences observed in other groups. According to the in-vitro gas production assessment, spray-dried fish silages generally had considerably high rate of digestibility. It was determined that the acid and fermented fish silage powders had high digestibility and valuable feed sources according to the results of the proximate analysis, amino acids compositions, total antioxidants, DPPH inhibition rates and in-vitro digestibility assessments. © Published by Central Fisheries Research Institute (CFRI) Trabzon, Turkey. - Abstract
Functional, physicochemical and nutritional properties of protein from whole Klunzinger's ponyfish (Equulites klunzingeri) extracted by pH shifting methods were evaluated. The alkaline protein isolate (AlPI) had higher protein content (88.69 %) than the acid protein isolate (AcPI, 86.13%). AlPI had generally higher content of essential amino acid than AcPI, except methionine. The ratio of total essential amino acid/total amino acid in AlPI and AcPI of Klunzinger's ponyfish was found to be 47.5 and 44.9%, respectively. According to differential scanning calorimetry analysis, the Tmax values of raw Klunzinger's ponyfish (R), AlPI and AcPI were determined to be 40.4, 71.2 and 70.44C, respectively. The initial thiobarbituric acid reactive substance value was higher in AcPI (1.99) than that in AlPI (1.19). AlPI was also found to be lighter and whiter than AcPI (L*: 66.56, whiteness: 59.50 and L*: 60.76, whiteness: 56.41, respectively). The results of "emulsion capacity," "water- and oil-holding capacity" and "foam capacity and stability" of AlPI and AcPI indicated that satisfactory functional properties are needed in food processing. Practical Applications: Klunzinger's ponyfish is a discard fish that exists in large amount in Mediterranean Sea. Even if it has a potential as high quality protein source, it is not being used for human food products as functional ingredients. This study investigates the functional, physicochemical and nutritional properties of protein from whole Klunzinger's ponyfish extracted by pH shifting methods. According to the obtained data in this study, the nutritional, functional and physicochemical properties of protein isolates of Klunzinger's ponyfish were suitable for supplementing as an ingredient for human consumption. Protein as an ingredient developed from an inexpensive source is important to the industry. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

- Abstract
The effects of rosemary extract (2, 2.5 and 3%) on oxidative stability of fried sea bream (Sparus aurata) during chill storage (4±1C) were investigated. The results of this study showed that the highest free fatty acid (FFA), peroxide value (PV) and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) values were obtained from the control group (4.0% oleic acid, 23.7meq/kg and 2.59mg of malonaldehyde [MA]/kg, respectively) at the end of the storage period. In contrast to the control group, rosemary-treated samples showed lower FFA (3.0, 2.3 and 2.4% oleic acid, respectively), PV (10.1, 8.9 and 8.9meq/kg, respectively) and TBA (2.08, 1.57 and 1.16mg MA/kg, respectively) formation. Similarly, it was observed that the addition of rosemary extract has positive effect on the sensory quality of fried sea bream fillets. According to sensory assessment, the lowest overall sensory acceptability (5.08) was obtained in the control group, although the treated groups were still acceptable (6.33, 6.67 and 7.58, respectively) after 5 days of chill storage. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Alpha (?)-, beta (ß)-, gamma (?)- and delta (?)-tocopherol in commonly consumed fish species and also the effects of microwave cooking on tocopherol content of fish were investigated. ?-Tocopherol was found to be the major form of vitamin E in fish muscle. Golband goatfish (47.81mg/kg), anchovy (40.84mg/kg), striped sea bream (34.31mg/kg) and bogue (33.86mg/kg) had the highest tocopherol content among the samples, whereas the lowest tocopherol levels were observed for silver fish (16.06mg/kg) and gurnard (18.01mg/kg). The total tocopherol contents of the cooked fish ranged from 67.78 to 72.875mg/kg due to the loss of water content in fish muscle. The result of this study showed that fish species had good tocopherol levels for raw and cooked samples. Stability of tocopherol content to microwave cooking in fish muscle was observed. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The effect of different types of oil (sunflower, soybean, corn and canola oil) on the volatile formation of fried goatfish (Upeneus pori) during refrigerated (2°C) storage period were assessed in this study. When using the SPME technique, forty-three compounds were detected. Among the detected compounds twelve aldehydes, nine alcohols, nine acids, three ketones, four amines and seven other compounds were found in raw and fried goatfish during refrigerated storage periods. Frying with different types of oil had significant influence on the volatile compounds of goatfish. However, considerable differences observed in the formation of some volatile compounds depending on type of frying oil. It was also concluded that, changes in volatile compounds during cold storage periods were not good spoilages markers for fried goatfish. © 2011 The Authors. The total lipids and seasonal variations in the fatty acids of the mantle of cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) captured in the north eastern Mediterranean were investigated and the mantle was found to be a good source of polyunsaturated fatty acids (?3 PUFAs, in particular). In all seasons, the major fatty acids in the cuttlefish mantle were observed to be palmitic acid (16:0), stearic acid (18:0), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5?3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6?3). A comparison of the saturated fatty acid (29.5-36.8%), monounsaturated fatty acids (7.81-9.84%) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (43.7-49.6%) of the cuttlefish mantle revealed that polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) constituted the highest proportion. The levels of DHA in the cuttlefish mantle in autumn, winter, spring and summer were 27.6%, 28.5%, 29.5% and 23.9%, while those of EPA were 16.8%, 15.4%, 14.7% and 13.9%, respectively. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. European eel ,Freshness indicators ,Fish quality - Abstract
Freshness assessment of European eel (Anguilla anguilla) stored in ice and in boxes without ice at 3 ± 1°C was assessed by sensory, chemical (total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), thiobarbituric values (TBA), peroxide value (PV), free fatty acid (FFA), and pH) and microbiological (total viable counts, TVC) methods. The limit for sensory acceptability of eel stored in ice was ~12-14 days, and ~5-7 days at 3 ± 1°C. TVB-N level of about ?10 mg TVB-N 100 g-1 flesh could be regarded as the limit of acceptability. PV values and the release of FFA increased during storage in ice and at 3 ± 1°C but the increases were greater at 3 ± 1°C. Values of pH showed no statistically significant (P > 0.05) changes for eel stored in ice and at 3 ± 1°C. Water losses of fillets stored at at 3 ± 1°C were higher (P < 0.05) than those stored in ice. TBA values were found to fluctuate under both storage conditions. This study shows that sensory analysis of eel correlated well with microbiological analysis. The acceptability of eel decreased as TVB-N, FFA, PV and TVC values increased. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In April 2020, the European Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (ESCAP) Research Academy and the ESCAP Board launched the first of three scheduled surveys to evaluate the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP) services in Europe and to assess the abilities of CAP centers to meet the new challenges brought on by the crisis. The survey was a self-report questionnaire, using a multistage process, which was sent to 168 heads of academic CAP services in 24 European countries. Eighty-two responses (56 complete) from 20 countries, representing the subjective judgement of heads of CAP centers, were received between mid-April and mid-May 2020. Most respondents judged the impact of the crisis on the mental health of their patients as medium (52%) or strong (33%). A large majority of CAP services reported no COVID-19 positive cases among their inpatients and most respondents declared no or limited sick leaves in their team due to COVID-19. Outpatient, daycare, and inpatient units experienced closures or reductions in the number of treated patients throughout Europe. In addition, a lower referral rate was observed in most countries. Respondents considered that they were well equipped to handle COVID-19 patients despite a lack of protective equipment. Telemedicine was adopted by almost every team despite its sparse use prior to the crisis. Overall, these first results were surprisingly homogeneous, showing a substantially reduced patient load and a moderate effect of the COVID-19 crisis on psychopathology. The effect on the organization of CAP services appears profound. COVID-19 crisis has accelerated the adoption of new technologies, including telepsychiatry. - Abstract
It was aimed to evaluate the relationships between neuropsychological functions, self-reported metacognitive abilities, and resilience levels among children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and those with Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome (CDS) compared to healthy controls. This cross-sectional, case-control study was consisted of 36 children with CDS only, 36 with ADHD only, 33 with CDS and ADHD and 39 control children were enrolled for a total sample of 144 children. The intellectual and neuropsychological functioning of the participating children was evaluated using the WISC-IV. Metacognitive Awareness Inventory for Children(MAI-C), Emotional Resilience Scale(ERS), and Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale(RCADS) were used. In both Processing Speed Index (PSI) and Perceptual Reasoning Index (PRI), children with CDS had significantly lower scores compared to those with ADHD, while those with ADHD and ADHD + CDS were similar to each other and controls. Children with CDS had greater metacognitive awareness than those with ADHD only and those with ADHD + CDS, whereas controls had the greatest level of metacognitive awareness. The emotional sensitivity of children with CDS was similar to that of children with ADHD + CDS and significantly greater than that of children with ADHD and controls, while control children had the lowest levels. The results of this study suggest that metacognitive abilities and emotional resilience may be targeted in rehabilitation/therapy of children with CDS ± ADHD and that interventions targeting processing speed and perceptual reasoning in younger children with CDS symptoms may be beneficial.

- Abstract
Purpose: To investigate the changes in ocular optical coherence tomography (OCT) findings in the comorbidity of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and specific learning disorder (SLD)., Methods: This study included 40 individuals diagnosed as having ADHD along with comorbid SLD, 40 individuals diagnosed as having only ADHD, and 40 individuals with no psychiatric disorders. OCT assessments were performed on eyes of the participants to obtain retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, ganglion cell complex (GCC) thickness, and macular thickness measurements., Results: In total, 240 eyes were evaluated. The right and left eyes were not significantly different in terms of RNFL, GCL, and macular thickness within groups ( P > .05). RNFL thickness was measured and compared across four quadrants (superior, inferior, temporal, and nasal). Although these values were not significantly different between the groups ( P > .05), RNFL was observed to be thinner in children with comorbid ADHD and SLD in all quadrants. Similarly, GCL and macular thickness measurements were also not different between the groups ( P > .05)., Conclusions: Considering that retinal nerve fibers can be seen as an extension of the brain in the embryologic context, the results showed that OCT findings alone are not sufficient to detect the changes in ADHD and SLD comorbidity. The authors suggest that OCT is more useful in the etiology and follow-up of neurodegenerative diseases rather than neurodevelopmental disorders. - Abstract
The bioactive properties of the combination of microencapsulated cell-free supernatant (CFS) from Streptococcus thermophilus and thyme extract on food-related bacteria ( Photobacterium damselae, Proteus mirabilis , Vibrio vulnificus, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC29213, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC29212, and Salmonella Paratyphi A NCTC13) were investigated. The microencapsulated CFS of S. thermophilus, in combination with ethanolic thyme extract, had a particle size in the range of 1.11 to 11.39 µm. The microencapsulated CFS of S. thermophilus had a wrinkled, spherical form. In the supernatant, especially at 2% ( v/w ), the thyme extract additive caused a decrease in the wrinkled form and a completely spherical structure. A total of 11 compounds were determined in the cell-free supernatant of S. thermophilus , and acetic acid (39.64%) and methyl-d3 1-dideuterio-2-propenyl ether (10.87%) were the main components. Thyme extract contained seven components, the main component being carvacrol at 67.96% and 1,2,3-propanetriol at 25.77%. Significant differences ( p < 0.05) were observed in the inhibition zones of the extracts on bacteria. The inhibitory effect of thyme extract on bacteria varied between 25.00 ( P. damselae ) and 41.67 mm ( V. vulnificus ). Less antibacterial activity was shown by the microencapsulated CFS from S. thermophilus compared to their pure form. ( p < 0.05). As a result, it was found that microencapsulated forms of CFS from S. thermophilus, especially those prepared in combination with 2% ( v / w ) thyme extract, generally showed higher bioactive effects on bacteria.

Objective: Studies have shown that theory of mind, emotion regulation and pragmatic abilities are negatively affected in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder ( OCD). We aimed to investigate theory of mind (ToM) abilities, social responsiveness, pragmatic language, and emotion regulation skills in children with OCD and to compare them to healthy controls., Methods: This study was designed as a single-center, cross-sectional, case-control study. ToM abilities were evaluated via "Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test" (RMET), "Faces Test", "Faux-Pas Test", "Comprehension Test" and "Unexpected Outcomes Test". Social responsiveness, pragmatic language and emotion regulation were evaluated by Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS), Children's Communication Checklist- Second Edition (CCC-2), Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) and Children's Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (CY-BOCS). Within the study period, we enrolled 85 adolescents (42 with OCD and 43 controls)., Results: The OCD group performed significantly lower than healthy controls in the Faux Pass and Comprehension tests ( p = 0.003 for both). We found a statistically significant difference between groups in terms of the goal, strategy, non-acceptance subscales of the DERS ( p < 0.001, p = 0.006, p = 0.008, respectively) as well as the total DERS score ( p < 0.001). CY-BOCS total scores correlated significantly and negatively with Comprehension, Faux Pas and Unexpected Outcomes tests, and positively with CCC total, SRS total and DERS total scores. In regression analysis the DERS, SRS and CCC tests emerged as significant predictors of CY-BOCS total score., Conclusion: Addressing ToM, pragmatic, and ER difficulties when planning the treatment of young people with OCD may contribute to positive outcomes.

- Abstract
Water kefir is widely consumed all over the world due to its potential health benefits. The aim of this current study was to compare non-fermented juice and fermented beverage of water kefir produced from Aronia melanocarpa juice and pomace in terms of chemical, physical and sensory quality as well as valorisation of pomace in the production of water kefir. When compared to water kefir made with aronia juice, less reduction in total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and total anthocyanin content (TAC) was observed in samples made with aronia pomace during the fermentation process. Similarly, greater antioxidant activity was demonstrated in water kefir made with aronia pomace than juice. Based on sensory evaluation, no difference was found in overall acceptability, taste, aroma/odor, and turbidity of water kefir made with aronia pomace before and after fermentation. Results indicated that aronia pomace has potential in water kefir production., Competing Interests: The authors declare the following financial interests/personal relationships which may be considered as potential competing interests: Fatih OZOGUL reports was provided by Leibniz University Hannover., (© 2023 The Author(s).)

- Abstract
Introduction: Enuresis is a common childhood disorder associated with the lack of bladder control that would be expected based on the child's age or developmental stage. Enuresis affects the lives of both children and their parents due to the burden it entails in daily life., Objective: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the dimensions of attachment between children with enuresis and their mothers, as well as the relationship with parental attitudes., Methods: This study included 70 children were diagnosed with primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (PMNE) based on the guidelines of the International Children's Continence Society (ICCS) along with 70 children with not enuresis and any psychiatric disorders. We asked the mothers of all participants to complete the Parental Attitude Research Instrument, and the children to complete The Experiences in Close Relationships Scale Revised - Middle Childhood., Results: Both groups in our study were well balanced in terms of gender, age, and sociodemographic data. Children with enuresis were found to score higher on the anxiety and avoidance dimensions of the attachment scale with statistical significance (p < 0.01). Also, on the scale completed by the mothers of children with enuresis, the subtests indicating overprotective parenting and strict discipline presented significant differences (p < 0.01)., Discussion: Data obtained in our study demonstrate that enuresis can have a negative effect on the mother-child attachment and parental attitudes. The use of harsh language or punishment by the mother in response to the failure of the child to achieve nocturnal dryness may affect the attachment between the mother and the child, and cause the child to experience negative emotions such as shame, anxiety, embarrassment, frustration, and loneliness., Conclusion: We think that it would be useful to evaluate the mother-child attachment and the crisis experienced by the family after each wetting incidence in combination with parental attitudes and behaviors in the treatment of enuresis cases., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest No conflict of interest was declared by the authors., (Copyright © 2022 Journal of Pediatric Urology Company. - Abstract
Background and Aims: While health workers were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic on an individual and professional basis, their families and especially their children were directly or indirectly exposed to similar factors. This study aims to compare the emotion regulation competencies of school-age children of healthcare workers in Turkey, before and during the COVID-19 pandemic and to investigate their emotion regulation competencies during the pandemic in terms of care conditions, daily life activities and overall health., Methods: This study used the purposeful sampling technique and was designed as a cross-sectional and relational survey study. To conduct this study, permission was received from the Ministry of Health Directorate-General for Health Services, COVID-19 Research Evaluation Commission, and İzmir Kâtip Çelebi University Non-Interventional Clinical Research Ethics Committee (Date/Decision no: 04.03.2021/0090). The data-collection process was carried out online between March and July, 2021. A total of 106 healthcare workers who serve in pandemic clinics or fields participated in this study. In addition to the information forms prepared by the researchers of this study, the Emotion Regulation Scale (ERS), which was adapted into Turkish, was used. One-way analysis of variance for independent samples was used for the analysis of variables, and paired samples t-test was used to compare emotion regulation competencies before and during the pandemic., Results: The children's total ERS scores increased during the pandemic (47.70 ± 8.35) when compared with their pre-pandemic scores (44.86 ± 9.25), and furthermore this difference was found to be statistically significant ( p = 0.000). The total mean ERS score of children with a healthcare worker parent increased significantly during the pandemic compared with the scores before the pandemic, which revealed that emotion regulation occurred at a lower level for these children., Conclusion: The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the emotion regulation competencies of children whose parents are healthcare workers is evident., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (© 2022 The Authors. Objective: The restrictions imposed by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic have caused significant changes in people's lives. This study aimed to investigate anxiety levels and changes in health and hygiene behaviors in mothers of children with asthma in early COVID-19 lockdown in Turkey. Materials and Methods: This study was a cross-sectional survey conducted on children with asthma, 6 to 11 years of age, between June 1 and 30, 2020, in Turkey. A sociodemographic data form, health and hygiene behavior form, childhood asthma control test, and state-trait anxiety inventory were administered to the mothers of the children. Results: The asthma group included 123 children (Female: 39.0%) and median age, interquartile range (IQR) [minimum-maximum]: 8.0 (6) [6-12] years; the control group included 88 children (Female: 47.7%) median age, IQR [minimum-maximum]: 8.0 (7) [5-12] years. Increased hygiene behaviors and high compliance with social isolation measures were recorded in the early lockdown, with no difference between the groups. Before the pandemic, the most frequently used cleaning products were general-purpose cleaners. During the early lockdown, however, the most frequently used product was disinfectants and was similar in both groups. In both groups, the rate of using nutritional supplements increased during the pandemic period, but the rate was higher in children with asthma both before and during the early lockdown ( P < 0.001). The anxiety levels of the mothers in asthma and control groups were similar. Conclusion: This study is the first in Turkey demonstrating that, in mothers of children with asthma, lifestyle changes related to health and hygiene and anxiety levels are similar to those of other children and their mothers during the early lockdown period of COVID-19 pandemic.

- Abstract
Objective: Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is associated with significant pragmatic language impairment and theory of mind deficits, but there are only a handful of studies have investigated the relationship between them in these conditions. This study aimed that investigate two different aspects of Theory of Mind (ToM) (ToM decoding and reasoning), pragmatic language impairment, and emotion regulation in patients with ADHD., Method: Seventy adolescents with ADHD were compared to matched 64 healthy controls. We administered Social Responsiveness Scale-2 (SRS-2), Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), Kiddie-SADS, Conners Parent Rating Scale, Children's Communication Checklist-2 (CCC-2), Faux Pas, Comprehension Test, and Reading Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET) to all study participants., Results: The CCC-2 scores were found to be statistically significantly higher in the ADHD group than in healthy controls. ADHD group had lower performance in the Faces Test and RMET compared to healthy controls, which did not survive from false discovery rate correction. We also found that CCC-2 performance and Conners scores were significant predictors of social responsiveness., Conclusion: Our results point to widespread impairment in pragmatic language use and communication from many perspectives. These results might be important to understand the difficulties in social functioning and interpersonal relationship in adolescents with ADHD.Key pointsADHD is associated with significant impairment in pragmatic language use and social cognitive functions.ToM-Decoding (RMET) is impaired much more than ToM-Reasoning (Faux Pas) in ADHD.Pragmatic language skills and severity of ADHD may be significant predictors of social responsiveness.Emotion regulation problems may affect communication and pragmatic language use.

Background: Since the emergence and worldwide spread of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, it has caused people to experience adverse psychological effects. This study aimed to assess anxiety levels during COVID-19 in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD), including nephrotic syndrome (NS) and kidney transplantation (Tx)., Methods: A case-controlled, cross-sectional study was conducted with children aged 10-18 years, who had a diagnosis of CKD or NS, or Tx, and followed in our center between April and July 2020. A healthy control group was recruited with age- and gender-matched children. A questionnaire with printed and online versions was designed in three parts: the first addressed demographic characteristics, the second addressed opinions about the pandemic, and the third was the Turkish version of the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale - Child Version., Results: A total of 88 children completed the questionnaire. The patient and control groups were similar in terms of gender, age, household members and history of psychiatric treatment. Both groups stated that coronavirus is a risky disease for children (63.6%), and that they were afraid of contagion (69.3%). Only half of them were receiving realistic and informative answers from family members. In the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale - Child Version, 66% of them received a high score on at least one subscale. The social phobia scores of the control group were higher than those of the patient group, although the proportion of high scores was similar in both groups. The ratio of high-scored participants was higher in CKD patients for panic disorder, and was lower in the immunosuppressive agent group for social phobia., Conclusion: The current COVID-19 pandemic is a disaster that children encounter for the first time in their lives. It does not exclusively cause anxiety among children with chronic kidney diseases but also affects healthy children., (© 2021 Japan Pediatric Society.)

Background: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the serum neurotensin (NT) levels and their relationships with self-reported anxiety, emotion regulation skills and impulsivity in healthy and obese adolescents., Methods: Adolescents who gained weight between 12- 17 years of age and who were above the 95th percentile (p) for body mass index (BMI) > 95p were compared with age- and gender-matched healthy adolescents with a BMI of 3-85 p. Anthropometric measurements were performed, and serum NT levels were analyzed with ELISA method in all participants. Barrat Impulsivity Scale-11 (BIS-11), Screen for Child Anxiety Related Disorders (SCARED) and Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) were used for evaluating self-reported impulsivity, anxiety and emotion regulation. MANOVA with follow-up univariate ANOVAs (Bonferroni corrected) were used for group comparisons. P was set at 0.05 (two-tailed)., Results: Sixty-five obese and 65 healthy adolescents were included in the study. In the obese group, NT levels were significantly elevated compared to the control group. Self-reported emotion-regulation difficulties, anxiety and impulsivity were significantly elevated among obese adolescents. Serum NT levels among the obese group were positively correlated with emotion dysregulation and impulsivity scores., Conclusions: In this study, we found emotional dysregulation, anxiety, impulsivity, and serum NT levels were significantly elevated among obese adolescents compared to controls. NT levels in the obese group correlated with impulsivity and emotion dysregulation. Further studies should evaluate the potential role of NT in the etiology of psychopathology among adolescents who are obese.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the peer victimization and anger expression in adolescents with asthma. The relationship between asthma control and psychological features was also examined., Methods: The study was a cross-sectional study with a healthy control group. The sample of the study was composed of 61 adolescents who were previously diagnosed by a physician with asthma of various intensities. Sixty adolescents with no chronic disorders were enrolled as the control group. Peer victimization was examined using the Multidimensional Peer Victimization Scale (MPVS). The State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI) was used to assess anger expression styles. Emotional and behavioral symptoms of the adolescents were measured using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ)., Results: Adolescents with asthma reported more peer victimization in the subscales of physical, social, verbal, attacks on property, and frightening in the MPVS; and having more problems in emotional, social, and peer relations areas in the SDQ ( p < .001 for all subscales) compared to the control group. The results were similar between the groups regarding the conduct problems and hyperactive behaviors. The adolescents with asthma reported more anger repression and less anger expression than the control group ( p < .001 for both subscales)., Conclusions: The results indicated that the adolescents with asthma were subjected to more peer victimization and experienced more difficulties in anger expression than the controls. Based on the findings of this study, we suggest that these psychological factors should be kept in mind during the management of asthma in adolescents.

- Abstract
Background: Phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) germline mutations are associated with cancer syndromes (PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome; PHTS) and in pediatric patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and macrocephaly. The exact prevalence of PTEN mutations in patients with ASD and macrocephaly is uncertain; with prevalence rates ranging from 1% to 17%. Most studies are retrospective and contain more adult than pediatric patients, there is a need for more prospective pediatric studies., Methods: We recruited 131 patients (108 males, 23 females) with ASD and macrocephaly between the ages of 3 and 18 from five child and adolescent psychiatry clinics in Turkey from July 2018 to December 2019. We defined macrocephaly as occipito-frontal HC size at or greater than 2 standard deviations (SD) above the mean for age and sex on standard growth charts. PTEN gene sequence analysis was performed using a MiSeq next generation sequencing (NGS) platform, (Illumina)., Conclusion: PTEN gene sequence analyses identified three pathogenic/likely pathogenic mutations [NM_000314.6; p.(Pro204Leu), (p.Arg233*) and novel (p.Tyr176Cys*8)] and two variants of uncertain significance (VUS) [NM_000314.6; p.(Ala79Thr) and c.*10del]. We recommend testing for PTEN mutations in all patients with ASD and macrocephaly., (© 2021 The Authors. - Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of drug holidays during summer vacations among children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who were treated with methylphenidate in terms of ADHD symptoms and executive functions., Methods: The study was a prospective cohort study that includes pre-treatment, post-treatment and post-drug holiday evaluations. ADHD symptom severity was evaluated with the Clinical Global Impression Scale (CGI), the Conners' Parental Rating Scale-Short Form (CPRS) and the Conners' Teacher Rating Scale- Short Form (CTRS). The Stroop Color Word Test- TBAG Form (SCWT) was used to evaluate executive functions. Fifty-one patients participated in the study according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Methylphenidate (MPH) was started at 0.5 mg/kg/day and titrated weekly to a maximum of 1.2 mg/kg/day. During the follow-up period, 22 (43.0%) of the patients stopped treatment., Results: Completion times for all SCWT subtests were significantly reduced after treatment ( p < 0.001, p = 0.002, p < 0.001, p = 0.002, p < 0.001; respectively). Mean number of corrections in SCWT-3 and mean number of errors as well as corrections in SCWT-5 significantly reduced after treatment ( p = 0.047, p = 0.005, p = 0.007; respectively). Mean number of corrections in SCWT-3 and mean number of errors in SCWT-5 increased significantly after drug holiday compared to post-treatment ( p = 0.032 and p = 0.037; respectively)., Conclusion: Our results suggest that psychomotor speed and resistance to interference improved in children with ADHD receiving methylphenidate treatment. Drug holidays did not affect psychomotor speed while beneficial effects on resistance to interference were reduced with drug holidays.

- Abstract
Heavy metals are continuously released into the oceans from both natural and anthropogenic sources. They are serious threats to both ecosystem and human health because of their toxicity, persistence, bioaccumulation, and biomagnification. We present metal concentrations in the economically important bluefish from Iskenderun Bay, providing valuable information on Northeastern Mediterranean aquatic ecosystem health, as well as the human health risk. The concentrations of manganese, iron, copper, zinc, selenium, cadmium, lead, and mercury were determined in the gill, liver, and muscle tissues of bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix) caught in Iskenderun Bay (Turkey) during four seasons. Samples were analysed via inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. Fe and Zn were detected in the highest concentrations during all four seasons. The ranges of Fe concentrations were 61.15-108.76, 229.78-377.02, and 6.35-8.63 and those of Zn were 25.21-44.25, 42.25-76.08, and 6.27-13.59 in the gills, livers, and muscles, respectively. In contrast, Hg and Cd were not found in the bluefish tissues in any season with the exception of Cd in the gills during the spring (0.757 mg/kg, above the legal limit of 0.5 mg/kg). On a seasonal basis, no meaningful accumulation trend was observed for the muscles or gills, while the highest concentrations of Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, and Se in the liver were found in the spring. Liver tissues possessed higher metal concentrations than gill and muscle tissues. Estimated daily and weekly intakes of the metals due to human consumption of the bluefish were considerably lower than the provisional tolerable intake. In this study, there was an inflow of metals into Iskenderun Bay; however, no significant metal accumulation was found in bluefish tissues at a rate that would harm human health.

- Abstract
Objectives: Obesity is often the result of a high-calorie and unbalanced diet for a long time and can sometimes be associated with hyperphagia and eating disorders. Neurotensin (NT) is an anorexigenic peptide, which is secreted from the central nervous system and intestines, and increases intestinal fat absorption. In the literature, conflicting results regarding serum NT level in obesity and the relation of NT with metabolic parameters were reported. Besides, there is no data regarding the relation of NT with eating disorders or food preference in obese individuals. We aimed to evaluate the relation of serum NT level with metabolic parameters, hyperphagia, binge eating disorder (BED) and food preference in obese adolescents., Methods: The study included 65 obese adolescents and 65 healthy controls. Anthropometric measurements, biochemical analyzes and body fat analyzes were performed in all cases. Hyperphagia score, presence of BED and three-day food intake records were also evaluated., Results: NT level was significantly higher in obese adolescents than in controls and it was not associated with metabolic parameters, hyperphagia or food preference. In the obese group, NT level was not significantly different according to the presence of BED., Conclusions: Serum NT level is high in obese adolescents; however, it is not associated with metabolic parameters, hyperphagia, BED or food preference., (© 2021 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.)
